Seasonal variation in marine phytoplankton and ice algae at a shallow antarctic coastal site 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:3
The phytoplankton population near Davis, Vestfold Hills, Antarctica was monitored throughout 1982. Chlorophyll-a determinations
and counts of living cells in both the water column and sea ice demonstrated a marked seasonality in phytoplankton abundane
and species composition. From April to October nanoplanktonic organisms contributed most of the chlorophyll-a in both the
sea ice and water column. Blooms of diatoms occurred in May, November and December in the bottom of the sea-ice and in January
and February in the water column. Phaeocystis pouchetii was dominant during December in the water column. Large numbers of dead diatoms were found in winter. The concentrations
of nitrate, dissolved inorganic phosphate and dissolved silicate increased throughout the year until December, when the concentrations
of nitrate and silicate fell sharply, followed a month later by a reduction in phosphate concentration. The diversity of phytoplankton

The algal assemblages of a small limestone stream were studied for a year at monthly intervals. Algal standing crop was permanently high (mean concentration of 158 mg Chl-a · m–2), but it reached the maximum values in spring and summer. Diatoms were dominant in the algal assemblages throughout this time, and more than one hundred species were recorded during the survey. Most of them are characteristic of hard waters, but others, mainly occurring in summer, have been observed elsewhere in moderately halophile waters.A striking succession was observed in the diatom assemblage in the stream in each season. This succession, with a maximum in summer, was mainly related with the lessening in flow and the increase in water mineralization. Moreover, the diversity of the samples increased sharply from April 1982 to July 1983. In fact, a progressive increase in salinity tolerant species could be observed from winter and spring to summer. Nitzschia sociabilis, Navicula gregaria, Navicula lanceolata and Gomphonema olivaceum were the most abundant species in winter, whereas Achnanthes minutissima reached its maximum in spring and Navicula schroeterii, Nitzschia thermaloides and Cyclotella meneghiniana were some of the most abundant in summer. 相似文献

1. Epilithic algae grown on elevated or non-elevated ceramic tiles were exposed (to produce assemblages with different grazing histories) in a heavily grazed, montane stream in New Mexico, U.S.A. to Ameletus nymphs (Ephemeroptera) and Ecclisomyia larvae (Trichoptera) and the algal composition in insect faeces was compared to that on the tiles. Differences in grazing and digestion efficiency between grazers were then assessed and also differences in susceptibility to ingestion and digestibility among common algae. 2. Ordination of tile and faecal samples, using the relative abundance of common algae, revealed that: (i) algal assemblages on elevated vs. non-elevated tiles differed only slightly; (ii) the taxonomic composition of algae in faeces of both caddis and mayflies differed substantially from that on the tiles, indicating low grazing efficiency for some algal taxa; and (iii) the algal composition of faeces produced by caddis larvae and mayflies was similar, indicating little difference in grazing efficiency between them. However, some algal taxa were more susceptible to ingestion by caddisfly larvae when occurring on elevated tiles than on non-elevated tiles, suggesting that previous exposure to caddis grazing influenced assemblage attributes. 3. Although Ameletus and Ecclisomyia differed little in grazing efficiency, the percentage of diatoms that were dead after passage through the gut was greatest in the mayfly treatment, suggesting that mayflies digested diatoms more efficiently than the caddis. Analyses of differences in the condition of chloroplasts within diatoms in tile and faecal samples showed that losses of ’live‘ diatom cells (i.e. those containing full chloroplasts) during gut passage through mayflies equalled the increase, in faeces, of ’dead‘ (empty frustules) cells of all common diatoms. In contrast, some diatoms were digested inefficiently by caddis larvae. 4. Algae on elevated tiles contained a higher proportion of dead diatoms than those on non-elevated tiles, possibly because mayflies visited raised tiles more often and, consequently, ingested and defaecated cells at a higher rate in the absence of caddis larvae. Moreover, diatom taxa differed in the percentage of cells that were dead within tile assemblages, with populations of typically grazer-resistant taxa (e.g. Achnanthidium minutissimum, Planothidium lanceolatum and Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta) containing significantly more dead cells than grazer-susceptible taxa [e.g. small, chain-forming Fragilaria (= Staurosirella)]. This result suggests that a trade-off exists between ingestion vs. digestion resistance of microalgae. Both the ingestion and digestion efficiency of algivorous macroinvertebrates could influence the structure and function of algal assemblages. In heavily grazed systems, where algal cells are probably processed through grazer guts repeatedly, differential resistance to digestion among algae may be particularly important. 相似文献

Microscopic epilithic algae in the River Itchen at Otterbourne near Southampton and in the Ober Water in the New Forest were studied during 1984 and 1985. The River Itchen rises from chalk springs and has a steady pH near 8.2 and a mean alkalinity of 236 mg HCO3 1–1; at the study site the river is about 16 m wide and 20 cm deep, with a mean flow rate of 0.33 m s–1 and a discharge ranging through the year between 0.34 and 2.46 m3 s–1. The Ober Water, which drains sands and gravels, has a pH between 6.9 and 7.2 and a mean alkalinity of about 50 mg HCO3 1–1; at the study site it is about 6 m wide, with a mean flow rate of 0.27 m s–1 and a discharge ranging through the year between 0.08 and 1.0 m3 s–1.Epilithic algae removed from the pebbles that form the major part of the beds of both streams show seasonal changes in abundance and composition. Diatoms peaked in April/May and dominate the epilithic flora in both streams, comprising 70–95% of all algal cells; highest numbers of chlorophytes occurred in summer and cyanophytes increased in autumn. The species composition of the epilithic flora in the two streams was different, as was the population density; algal cell numbers ranged between 500 and 7000 cells mm–2 of stream floor in the River Itchen and between 8 and 320 cells mm–2 of stream floor in the Ober Water. The chlorophyll a content of epilithic algae in the River Itchen ranged between 115 and 415 mg m–2 of stream floor, representing an annual mean biomass of about 8 g m–2, whereas in the Ober Water a chlorophyll a content of 2.2 to 44 mg m–2 of stream floor was found, representing an annual mean biomass of about 1 g m–2. Cautious estimates of the annual production of epilithic algae in these streams suggest a value of about 600 g organic dry weight m–2 in the River Itchen and about 75 g m–2 in the Ober Water. 相似文献

Changes in epilithic algal communities colonizing introduced substrata were determined in a stream polluted with oil refinery
effluent at Digboi (Assam, India). The number of algal taxa was reduced but the growth of blue-green algae, particularly two
species ofOscillatoria, was encouraged. Epilithic biomass (as chlorophylla) also declined at polluted stations. The algal community of the upstream station was markedly different from the community
occurring just after the confluence of effluent; however, the differences were gradually reduced downstream, indicating improvement
in water quality. Of the various criteria tested for possible relationships with the level of pollutants, species richness,
Shannon diversity and biomass showed significant relationships. The study demonstrates the usefulness of algal criteria for

The responses of epilithic bacterial and algal communities to sewage-treatment-works (STW) effluent were studied in three
streams in North Yorkshire, England, using both conventional microbiological techniques and the techniques of molecular genomics.
Cod Beck, Thornton Beck and the River Wiske, were visited in May–June 2000 and January 2001 and the epilithic communities
on submerged stones were sampled to determine chlorophyll-a, leucine assimilation, bacterial abundance, identity and abundance of microalgae, and epilithon dry and organic weights.
Additionally, DNA from the epilithon of stones, collected in March–April and November 2000, was extracted, and samples were
amplified using universal primers appropriate, respectively, for bacteria [Muyzer et al., 1993. Applied and Environmental
Microbiology 59: 695–700] and microscopic phototrophs [Nübel et al., 1997. Applied and Environmental Microbiology 63: 3327–3332]
followed by DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis). Differences in algal community composition and abundance were
greater between streams than between sites upstream and downstream of the STW outfalls. DGGE banding profiles of bacterial
communities revealed grouping according to stream, and not the formation of communities characteristic of downstream sites;
seasonal variation was also evident. Thus the discharge of STW effluent to the streams did not bring about the development
of communities that are characteristically associated with organic pollution. Changes in composition and structure of bacterial
and micro-algal epilithic communities were detected, but the relatively high quality effluents had only mild effects, not
altering the environments sufficiently to override the natural differences between the three streams. 相似文献

The distribution and abundance of benthic algae and macroinvertebrates were examined along a natural thermal gradient formed by hot springs in Little Geysers Creek, Sonoma Co., California, USA. Maximum water temperatures ranged from 52 °C at the uppermost station to 23 °C at a station 400 m downstream. Benthic chlorophyll a decreased exponentially from 2.5 g m–2 at 52 °C to less than 0.1 g m–2 at 23 °C, a pattern of decline also exhibited by algal phaeophytin. Blue-green algae dominated at higher temperatures but were replaced by filamentous green algae and diatoms at lower temperatures.Macroinvertebrates were absent at temperatures 45 °C; the highest density (> 150 000 m–2, mainly Chironomidae) occurred at 34 °C, whereas biomass was highest (4.6 g m–2, as dry weight) at 23 °C and species richness (15 species) was highest at 27 °C. The two predominant macroinvertebrate populations (the midge Tanytarsus sp. and the caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis) occurred at sites that were several degrees below their lethal thermal threshold, suggesting that a temperature buffer is maintained. 相似文献

Epilithic bacterial and algal biomass were compared among a run, riffle, and pool along an open-canopy section of a third-order, temperate stream. Epilithic biofilms were sampled after 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days colonization on unglazed ceramic tiles that were attached to plastic trays (n = 3) placed across each of the three habitats (i.e., run, riffle, pool). The diverse habitats and sampling regime were selected to provide a range in algal biomass so that potential covariation between epilithic bacterial and algal biomass could be assessed. There were significant differences among habitats and among trays within each habitat for both chlorophyll a and AFDM. Chlorophyll a and AFDM increased in the run and pool throughout the colonization period. In the riffle, chlorophyll a and AFDM increased rapidly early in colonization, then decreased. Epilithic bacterial biomass increased rapidly with no significant differences among the three habitats throughout colonization. Further, bacterial biomass did not correlate with either chlorophyll a or AFDM in any of the three habitats or on any of the sampling days. These results suggest that epilithic algal and bacterial biomass may be regulated by independent controls in some stream environments. 相似文献

高寒森林溪流不仅是区域河流的源头,而且是联系陆地与水域的生态纽带。微生物活动可能成为控制溪流生态系统过程的关键因子,但其结构与动态过程缺乏必要关注。因此,结合同步温度动态监测,采用实时荧光定量PCR和DGGE技术,在2014年到2015年冻融季节和生长季节关键时期对比研究了川西高寒森林溪流和森林林下土壤中微生物群落的动态特征。研究结果发现,高寒森林溪流具有较低的真菌和细菌群落丰度;与森林土壤相同,溪流在冻融季节表现出相对生长季节更高的真菌/细菌比,而且从冻融季节到生长季节,溪流微生物丰度动态也表现出明显的季节性变化特征。与森林土壤不同的是,溪流中细菌和真菌的丰度及其Shannon-Wiener多样性指数的最高值均出现在生长季节而不是冬季冻融季节,并且溪流中细菌丰度在季节性变化的不同时期具有显著差异(P0.05)。此外,森林土壤细菌类群以芽孢杆菌属(Bacillus sp.)比例相对较高,真菌类群则以格孢菌属(Pleosporales sp.)、曲霉属(Aspergillus sp.)和其他一些子囊菌门(Ascomycota)的类群为优势;而溪流细菌类群以红球菌属(Rhodococcus sp.)为主,真菌类群则以曲霉属和空团菌属(Cenococcum sp.)为主。同时,季节性变化中温度、p H、水溶性有机碳和溶解氧等环境因子可显著影响溪流微生物群落结构及其组成,这些环境因子在高寒森林溪流微生物群落的季节性变化过程中具有重要的作用。 相似文献

Salt pollution in a Japanese stream and its effects on water chemistry and epilithic algal chlorophyll-a 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Concentrations of major ions, total phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, biological oxygen demand and chlorophyll-a of epilithic algae were determined weekly at nine sites in a Japanese stream receiving effluent from a groundwater treatment plant. The concentrations of four major cations (Na, K, Ca and Mg) and chloride ion increased significantly immediately at downstream sites of the effluent outfall. The ionic concentrations decreased with increasing dilution from merging tributaries but never reached the original concentrations and relative composition of stream water within a 10.7 km stream distance from the outfall. The changes in total ionic concentration and relative ionic proportion also changed the chlorophyll-a content of epilithic algae. The results also showed significantly higher chlorophyll-a content in epilithic algae under moderate salinity. 相似文献

The influence of highway construction on the macroinvertebrates and epilithic algae of a high mountain stream 总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1
The response of a high elevation Rocky Mountain stream to highway construction activities was investigated over a three-year period during the ice-free season. Suspended solids and the proportion of fine sediment in the substrate increased at impacted sites, but rapidly returned to levels similar to reference sites following cessation of construction activities. During snowmelt runoff when suspended solids levels increased, there was little or no sedimentation of fine particles, even in depositional areas. At impacted sites algal species diversity and the organic content of the epilithon were reduced, and the detrital component was increased. The epilithon recovered less rapidly than suspended solids or substrate. The macroinvertebrate community was altered by construction activities at some locations but not others, and was generally less severely affected than anticipated. However, where an alteration occurred, reduction in density, abundance, and diversity were apparent, and the taxonomic composition was modified. The severity of the response was a function of the flow regime and the timing and duration of the impact at a given site. The hydrologic regime and high gradient of the study stream appeared to ameliorate to some extent the potentially adverse effects of short-term perturbations engendered by highway construction activities. 相似文献

Three treatments of zinc (0.05, 0.5, 1.0 mg Zn l−1) and a control could be identified by different algal communities in outdoor, flow-through, stream mesocosms. Established
communities were continuously exposed to Zn, and samples were collected on days 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 after treatment began.
Experiments were conducted in spring, summer, and fall 1984. Control stream mesocosms could be identified by diatoms in all
seasons. The 0.05 mg Zn l−1 treatment could be identified by certain diatom taxa being more abundant than in the control in all seasons and by a filamentous
green alga in summer and fall. The 0.5 mg Zn l−1 treatment could be identified by a filamentous green alga in fall. The 1.0 mg Zn l−1 treatment was dominated by unicellular green algae in all seasons and by a filamentous blue-green alga in summer. A similarity
index (SIMI) indicated that Zn-stressed samples generally became less similar to control samples as Zn concentration increased
from 0.05 to 1.0 mg Zn l−1. Total biovolume-density of all taxa responded slower than individual taxa in spring and failed to distinguish between Zn
treatments in summer and fall. Zinc bound to periphyton was much better than total Zn in water for identifying Zn treatments.
Zinc treatments as low as 0.05 mg Zn l−1 changed algal species composition despite 0.047 mg Zn l−1 being the Criterion of the US Environmental Protection Agency for the 24-h average of total recoverable Zn. 相似文献

Macroinverbrates associated with three species of aquatic plants and those on rock surfaces in a stream were collected every two weeks from late May to late November. Some animals appeared to use all plants opportunistically as substrates from which food sources could be better exploited throughout the season. Others, usually of minor numerical importance, strongly differentiated between plant species and appeared to find the resources that they may require on only one plant and only at specific times of the year.
Myriophyllum alterniflorum supported the highest density of invertebrates but numbers per unit surface area fluctuated widely throughout the season. Numbers of individuals on exposed rocks were remarkably constant and animals that dominated there were usually different from those on plants. Patterns in both total individuals and numbers of individuals within different taxa indicate that seasonal variation in phytomacrofauna in streams is significant and should be considered in the design of future studies. 相似文献

The Forsmark Biotest Basin is a shallow coastal ecosystem that receives brackish cooling-water discharge from a nuclear power
plant. The effects of the discharge on epilithic algal communities were investigated by analysing samples taken every third
week throughout one year at 11 sites differentially affected by temperature and/or flow rate enhancement. Community variation
was summarized in a canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of species abundances as a function of site and date. The temperature
increase favoured blue-green algae at the expense of red and brown algae. Blue-green algae were however abundant in summer
in stagnant water, whether heated or not, and some red and brown algae became abundant in winter in heated sites with flowing
water. Green algae and diatoms increased in biomass in the heated sites, but not in relative cover-abundance. The absence
of ice and snow cover at sites with heated and/or flowing water caused autumn species to persist into winter, because of the
higher light intensity (compared with natural conditions) and the absence of the mechanical abrasion by ice. The thermal discharge
lowered species diversity (Shannon-Weaver index) both in summer and winter at sites with flowing water, but not at sites with
quiescent or stagnant water. CCA showed alternate periods of stability and rapid change within the seasonal cycle. Individual
species were placed according to their optimum; red and brown algae in winter/spring, green algae in spring/summer, blue-green
algae in summer, and diatoms at various times. Exceptions to this pattern were species endo- or epiphytic on species of a
different group. Analysis of the effects of temperature, flow rate and ice cover on the seasonal pattern of particular species
showed that different species respond in individualistic ways to different combinations of these environmental variables. 相似文献

1. The aim of this study was to estimate patchiness in biomass and in the internal nutrient status of benthic algae on hard substrata (epilithon) in Lake Erken, Sweden, over different levels of distance, depth and time. Knowledge of the sources and scale of patchiness should enable more precise estimation of epilithic biomass and nutrient status for the entire lake. We focused on the horizontal scale, about which little is known. 2. We sampled epilithon by SCUBA diving and used a hierarchical sampling design with different horizontal scales (cm, dm, 10 m, km) which were nested in two temporal scales (within and between seasons). We also compared two successive years and three sampling depths (0, 1 and 4 m). Biomass was measured as particulate carbon and chlorophyll a (Chl a) and internal nutrient status as carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus (C : N : P) ratios and as specific alkaline phosphatase activity (APA). 3. Horizontal variation accounted for 60–80 and 7–70% of the total variation in biomass and in nutrient status, respectively, at all depths and during both years. Both small and large scales accounted for significant variation. We also found variation with time and depth. Biomass increased in autumn after a summer minimum, and the within‐season variation was very high. The lowest biomass was found at 0 m depth. Both N and P limitation occurred, being higher in 1996 than in 1997 and decreased with depth. 4. As a consequence, any sampling design must address variation with distance, depth and time when estimating biomass or nutrient limitation of benthic algae for an entire lake. Based on this analysis, we calculated an optimal sampling design for detecting change in the epilithic biomass of Lake Erken between different sampling days. It is important to repeat the sampling as often as possible, but also the large scales (10 m and km) and the dm scale should be replicated. Using our calculations as an example, and after a pilot study, an optimal sampling design can be computed for various objectives and for any lake. 5. Short‐term impact of the wind, light and nutrient limitation, and grazing, might be important in regulating the biomass and nutrient status of epilithic algae in Lake Erken. Patchiness in the nutrient status of algae was not coupled to the patchiness of biomass, indicating that internal nutrients and biomass were regulated by different factors. 相似文献

The production and chlorophyll concentration of epipelic and epilithic algae was measured during four years (1972–1975) in two shallow, Swedish subarctic lakes. One lake (Lake Hymenjaure) was fertilized with phosphorus or a combination of phosphorus and nitrogen while the other (Lake Stugsjön) served as a reference. The benthic algae in both lakes were dominated by Cyanophyceae of the same species during the whole investigation. The chlorophyll concentration of epipelic and epilithic algae was 100 and 20 mg·m–2 respectively and fairly constant during the season. In 1974–1975 there was a significant increase in chlorophyll concentration of the benthic algae in Lake Hymenjaure, probably as a response to the poorer light climate in the lake due to a large phytoplankton development. The annual benthic production was 3.4–7.2 gC·m–2 and it was not enhanced by the fertilization. Compared to the other primary producers (phytoplankton and macrophytes) the benthic algae constituted 70–83% of the total production in Lake Stugsjön. In Lake Hymenjaure, however, the importance of the benthic algae decreased from 50 to 22% of the total due to the great increase in phytoplankton production induced by the lake fertilization. 相似文献

The species composition and seasonal dynamics of water mites were studied in a small softwater stream in southern Germany from October 1986 to November 1988. On average water mites contributed 5.5% by abundance and 1.8% by biomass to the total invertebrate community. Annual densities and biomasses averaged 623–1057 (mean 905) individuals M–2 and 45.9–75.6 mg (mean 64.0) dry mass m–2, respectively. 41 species were identified, Torrenticola elliptica (Torrenticolidae) being the most abundant. Nearly every taxon showed a distinct and consistent seasonality, with maximum abundance and biomass in summer and minimum values in winter. An investigation of the prosobranch snail Brotia hainanensis (Brot, 1872) (Gastropoda: Thiaridae) in Tai Po Kau Forest Stream, New Territories, Hong Kong, has been undertaken with population samples collected at approximately 14-day intervals between August, 1977 and March, 1979. This species shows two peaks of recruitment per annum, one in spring and a second in the latter part of summer. Growth to sexual maturity is rapid, taking approximately 8.5 months, and in this respect, as well as its dual peak of recruitment, B. hainanensis displayed some variation from the iteroparous pattern of life cycles considered to be characteristic of freshwater prosobranch snails. Mortality after the young snails reach maturity is high due to severe seasonal spates in the stream and it is suggested that the modification of the life cycle of B. hainanensis from the type more usually encountered in freshwater prosobranchs reflects that this is an r-selected species adapted to a habitat where high density-independent mortality occurs. 相似文献
