The invasion of Llyn Coron in North Wales by the American immigrant Dugesia tigrina resulted in the almost entire displacement of the native Polycelis tenuis and P. nigra populations. Because competition for food is the most important factor controlling and regulating populations of British lake-dwelling triclads, the diets of the invasive and native triclads in the lake were examined in an attempt to explain the successful invasion.A serological technique, the precipitin test, identified the gut contents of field-collected triclads. Niche breadth, electivity and niche overlap indices were used in analysis of the data. A broad food niche was recorded for all the triclad species. Oligochaetes predominated in the diet of D. tigrina followed by Asellus and chironomids, in almost equal proportions, snails and caddisflies, with mayflies scarcely eaten. Both Polycelis species fed heavily on oligochaetes followed by Asellus. P. tenuis ate slightly higher proportions of chironomids and caddisflies than snails and mayflies, whilst P. nigra consumed similar proportions of these four prey taxa. Gammarus, scarce in Llyn Coron, and cladocerans were not eaten by the Polycelis species and by only a few D. tigrina.To-date there has been no apparent shift in the diet of the Polycelis species as a consequence of the invasion by D. tigrina. In the absence of any evidence for the partitioning of food on the basis of prey size or condition, the considerable overlap in the diets of D. tigrina and the Polycelis species suggests the potential for severe inter-specific competition for food. The superior exploitation by D. tigrina of the available food resource requires explanation.  相似文献

Synopsis Diet and annual production of two cyprinid fishes in the Piscataquis River, Maine, were investigated before and after extensive deforestation of the surrounding watershed. Observed patterns were evaluated relative to post-logging changes in the benthic macroinvertebrate community, and to differences in ecomorphology between the two fishes. Prey selection was generally density-dependent for both predator species throughout the study, but significant exceptions to density-dependence were observed for several aquatic insect lifemode groups (e.g., swimmers, climbers, burrowers). This apparent preference/avoidance for certain prey taxa by fish predators could be adequately explained by differential availability (vulnerability) among prey taxa. Compared to the year before logging, significant post-logging changes in diet composition and gut fullness were observed for both blacknose dace,Rhinichthys atratulus, and creek chub,Semotilus atromaculatus, concomitant with post-logging changes in the availability of benthic prey. Annual production of blacknose dace was significantly lower (52.7 vs. 37.7 kg ha–1 y–1) in the year following logging. In contrast, annual production of creek chub increased significantly after logging, from 8.6 to 17.4 kg ha–1 y–1. Because post-logging changes in the physical environment were probably not sufficient to directly affect fish populations, we hypothesize that blacknose dace were morphologically constrained to feed on a declining aquatic prey resource, with a resultant decline in production. In contrast, the generalist creek chub switched to a non-aquatic prey resource (terrestrial arthropods) and no decline in production was observed for that species.  相似文献

Predator diet is known to influence antipredator behaviour in prey. Yet, it is not clear how antipredator behaviour is affected by diet changes of the predator. We studied the effect of previous and present diet of a predatory mite Typhlodromips swirskii on the antipredator response of its prey, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. An earlier study showed that adult female whiteflies that had experienced predators, had learned to avoid ovipositing on plants with predators whose previous and present diet consisted of whitefly eggs and immatures. Here, we investigate whether adult whiteflies also avoid plants with predators whose present and/or previous diet consisted of a non-whitefly food source. Adult whiteflies were found not to avoid plants with predators whose present diet consisted of pollen and whose previous diet had consisted of either pollen or whitefly eggs and larvae. They did avoid plants with predators whose present diet consisted of whiteflies and whose previous diet had consisted of pollen, but to a lesser extent than when previous and present diet consisted of whiteflies. In a choice experiment, whiteflies discriminated between plants with predators whose present diet consisted of whiteflies, but that differed in previous diet. Our results show that both previous and present diets of predators are important in eliciting antipredator behaviour.  相似文献

The effect of a predator on the abundance of a prey species depends upon the predators abundance and its ability to capture that prey. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the community structure of predators of green treefrog (Hyla cinerea) tadpoles across habitat types and evaluate the effectiveness of individual predators on H. cinerea tadpoles. Correspondence and cluster analyses of predator frequencies across 23 aquatic habitats indicated that the majority of variance in predator communities was due to a division between permanent and temporary habitats. Experimental work demonstrated that survival of the smallest H. cinerea tadpoles was significantly lower than survival of medium and large tadpoles with the most effective predators, indicating that H. cinerea tadpoles attain a refuge from predation at larger body sizes. We combined the effectiveness of predators in experiments with the abundance of each predator species from the predator community survey to demonstrate that predation pressure on H. cinerea tadpoles is higher in temporary ponds. This pattern may explain in part why this species generally breeds successfully only in permanent habitats. It also confirms that discussions about an increasing gradient of predation pressure from temporary to permanent aquatic habitats should be restricted to individual prey species for which such a gradient has been demonstrated.  相似文献

A central issue in predator–prey interactions is how predator associated chemical cues affect the behaviour and life history of prey. In this study, we investigated how growth and behaviour during ontogeny of a damselfly larva (Coenagrion hastulatum) in high and low food environments was affected by the diet of a predator (Aeshna juncea). We reared larvae in three different predator treatments; no predator, predator feeding on conspecifics and predator feeding on heterospecifics. We found that, independent of food availability, larvae displayed the strongest anti-predator behaviours where predators consumed prey conspecifics. Interestingly, the effect of predator diet on prey activity was only present early in ontogeny, whereas late in ontogeny no difference in prey activity between treatments could be found. In contrast, the significant effect of predator diet on prey spatial distribution was unaffected by time. Larval size was affected by both food availability and predator diet. Larvae reared in the high food treatment grew larger than larvae in the low food treatment. Mean larval size was smallest in the treatment where predators consumed prey conspecifics, intermediate where predators consumed heterospecifics and largest in the treatment without predators. The difference in mean larval size between treatments is probably an effect of reduced larval feeding, due to behavioural responses to chemical cues associated with predator diet. Our study suggests that anti-predator responses can be specific for certain stages in ontogeny. This finding shows the importance of considering where in its ontogeny a study organism is before results are interpreted and generalisations are made. Furthermore, this finding accentuates the importance of long-term studies and may have implications for how results generated by short-term studies can be used.  相似文献

Summary In a series of laboratory experiments we examined the hypothesis that larvae of stream mayflies would respond to the presence of two different types of predators in such a way as to minimize their risk of being consumed by each. Positioning of larvae (whether they frequent the top, sides, or bottom of stones) of Baetis tricaudatus and Ephemerella subvaria was altered by the presence of predaceous stoneflies (Agnetina capitata) with a larger proportion of the population occurring on the upper surfaces, where the probability of encountering the predator was lowest. The presence of a benthivorous fish (Cottus bairdi) had no significant effects on positioning of the mayfly larvae. Lack of fish effects may reflect an inability of the mayflies to detect or respond to sculpins, or alternately may indicate that sculpins do not normally present a important predation risk for these mayflies. Failure of mayfly prey to account for fish predators when responding to the presence of stoneflies appcars to explain facilitation previously observed between stoneflies and sculpins.  相似文献

Synopsis There was partial spatial and complete temporal overlap of spawning by Etheostoma flabellare and E. nigrum in Marsh Creek, Wisconsin. E. flabellare tended to spawn at shallower depths than E. nigrum. Both species spawned over a greater range of depths in an area with few spawning sites (cavities under rocks or logs) than in an area where spawning sites were abundant. In the laboratory E. flabellare were able to prevent E. nigrum from occupying cavities they would have otherwise occupied. E. nigrum appear to be competitively inferior to E. flabellare in terms of spawning-site acquisition and retention, but possess several attributes that may allow them to persist in the presence of the latter.  相似文献

The most abundant predators of the pine engraver, Ips pini (Say), include Platysoma cylindrica (Paykull) and Medetera bistriata Parent. We amended bark sandwiches with pine engravers and adult P. cylindrica and larval M. bistriata, and report observations on these endophytic predators. Adult P. cylindrica preferred adult prey, and appeared to be facultative egg predators, which contrasts with other Histeridae. The larvae of P. cylindrica fed on pine engraver larvae. Protection from predators is generally assumed to be an advantage of an endophytic life history, but we found that this predator exploited the herbivore's gallery architecture to facilitate prey capture. Larval M. bistriata also fed on pine engraver larvae. Immediate paralysis or death of the prey followed a strike with their tentorial rods. Such rapid immobilization, in conjuction with the glandular histology of Medetera spp., suggests that they use a toxin to arrest prey.  相似文献

If generalist insect predators are a selective force contributing to patterns of feeding specialization by insect herbivores, then predators should be deterred from eating allelochemical-fed prey. The attack and feeding behaviors of naive predators (Podisus maculiventris stinkbugs) reared on control caterpillars (Manduca sexta) fed plain diet were compared to experienced predators reared on caterpillars fed tomato allelochemicals. Tomatine-fed prey were found more quickly by both naive and tomatine-experienced predators, and chlorogenic acid-experienced predators were more stimulated to begin searching for prey. However, experienced predators were less likely to attack both chlorogenic acidfed and tomatine-fed caterpillars than were naive predators. These results indicate that allelochemical-fed prey were easier for predators to locate, but allelochemical-containing prey often deterred predation by experienced predtors.  相似文献

Freshwater species of the genus Euplotes (Protozoa, Ciliophora) change their morphology in the presence of some of their predators. The ciliates develop extended lateral wings as well as dorsal and ventral projections which make engulfment by predators more difficult. In a series of laboratory experiments ingestion rates of four protozoan predators, the ciliates Lembadion bullinum, Dileptus anser, Stylonychia mytilus and Urostyla grandis, and one metazoan predator, the turbellarian Stenostomum sphagnetorum, on three species of Euplotes (E. octocarinatus, E. patella and E. aediculatus) were determined. It was calculated that the probability of rejection by a predator changed from 1:1 for ovoid morphs of Euplotes to about 2:1–20:1 for winged morphs of Euplotes, dependent on the prey and predator species that were combined. The nutritional condition of the prey also had some influence. In mixed-species cultures of prey and predators, transformed cells of E. octocarinatus survived for several months.  相似文献

Synopsis Feeding habits of juvenile alewife, A. pseudoharengus, blueback herring, A. aestivalis, and American shad, Alosa sapidissima, were examined over a 24 h period at an inshore location on the lower Hudson River. Feeding periodicity differed by species: alewives showed no diel differences, whereas shad fed least intensively near dawn and herring least intensively at night. Alewives fed primarily on chironomids and the amphipod Corophium lacustre, shad on Formicidae and larval chironomids, and herring on chironomids and copepods. Diel variation in prey selection was evident. Dietary overlap was generally greatest between alewife and herring and least between shad and herring.  相似文献

Larvivorous fishes fail to control mosquitoes in experimental rice plots   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Leon Blaustein 《Hydrobiologia》1992,232(3):219-232
The individual and interactive effects of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis Baird and Girard) and green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus Rafinesque) populations on densities of mosquito immatures and other aquatic fauna were assessed in experimental rice plots over a 12 week period. Mosquitofish, stocked at a much higher rate (2318 per ha) than is usually used in commercial rice fields, increased 88-fold in numbers per minnow trap over a ten week period. Adult green sunfish (7–10 cm TL), stocked at the same rate as mosquitofish, reproduced in the rice plots, but reproductive success was strongly associated with plot depth. Mosquitofish numbers were significantly lower in plots stocked with green sunfish early in the season but this difference soon disappeared. Significant reductions in densities of the immature stages of the mosquito, Culex tarsalis Coquillet, by the fishes were not demonstrated by analyses of variance and covariance (mosquitofish may have provided some control during the very last week [Blaustein, 1990]). Populations of the mosquito, Anopheles freeborni Aitken, were not significantly reduced by mosquitofish except during the last week. A. freeborni populations were significantly higher in the green sunfish treatment than in the control and mosquitofish treatment. Numbers of notonectids (predators of mosquitoes) were depressed in all fish treatments. This may have indirectly contributed to the ineffectiveness of the fishes to control mosquitoes. Other invertebrate predators of mosquitoes were not reduced significantly by the fishes. Similarly, these fishes had little effect on microcrustaceans and chironomids. These fauna, by serving as alternative prey, may have reduced predation intensity on mosquitoes. These results demonstrate that high stocking rates and high population growth of mosquitofish will not necessarily provide control of mosquitoes in rice fields.  相似文献

Clerid beetles are common natural enemies of bark beetles, and could potentially be used as biological control agents if they could be reared in sufficient numbers. We developed an artificial diet devoid of insect components for rearing Thanasimus dubius (Fabricius), a clerid that attacks several economically important bark beetles in eastern North America. We reared larvae of this predator using the artificial diet, and then used either natural or factitious prey to feed the adults so produced. Two different methods of presenting the diet were also examined. We then compared the performance of T. dubius reared on the artificial diet with newly-emerged wild individuals collected from the field. Our results suggest that adult predators reared on the diet are near in quality to wild ones, and high R0 values can be obtained. No difference in prey preference was found between wild and diet-reared individuals after five generations in the laboratory. Sufficient numbers of predators could be generated using these techniques to permit limited field trials of augmentative biological control.  相似文献

Short term, replicated experimental alteration of densities of a predatory water mite Piona exigua Viets, inside 0.45–0.475 m3 litre enclosures, revealed little evidence of the effects of predation on the number and relative abundance of the enclosed zooplankton species. Predation rates more closely approximated those estimated from single prey functional response experiments in the second experimental period (December) than in the first (March). In December Daphnia was the only susceptible taxon present in large numbers, whereas in March, Ceriodaphnia and Chydorus were also present. This result is consistent with laboratory findings that predation rates are lowered in the presence of more than one prey type. The difficulty of obtaining evidence for significant effects of these planktonic predators is in part due to changes in the preferred prey species in the diet of Piona depending on stage and sex of the mite and to aspects of experimental design. The wide variability between replicate enclosures at each predator density reduced the power of the statistical analyses used to test the null hypothesis. Enclosures with no predators are necessary to investigate the effects of enclosure on the zooplankton prey, since these effects may outweigh those due to predator consumption.  相似文献

Predatory insects that depend upon particular prey animals are commonly regulated by the prey animal’s abundance. Nymphs of the giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) are predators regarded as specialists in feeding on tadpoles. We studied the ontogenetic diet shift of aquatic nymphs by quantifying instar abundance and by analyzing captured prey and prey relative abundance during the period of rice irrigation in three localities. We also evaluated the contribution of major prey items (tadpoles, frogs, and Odonata nymphs) on specific growth rates of each nymphal stage in a rearing experiment. First to third-instar nymphs of K. deyrolli fed mainly on tadpoles, regardless of differences in prey availability. Nymphs of subsequent fourth and fifth instar stages shifted from tadpoles to other prey animals within each rice field. A rearing experiment demonstrated that giant water bug nymphs provided with tadpoles had greater specific growth rates at all nymphal stages, except for the final stage, than nymphs fed other prey (frogs and Odonata nymphs). The emergence of young K. deyrolli nymphs seemed to coincide with the period during which tadpoles became abundant in the rice fields. Consumption of tadpoles seems important to allow the nymph to complete its larval development in an unstable temporary habitat. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

The diet of an undescribed species of Kamimuria was investigated in Tai Po Kau Forest Stream, Hong Kong, by comparing larval gut contents with the array of available prey living on and among cobble substrates. Diets were dominated by chironomids and philopotamid caddisflies, with Baetidae, Heptageniidae, Hydropsychidae and Simuliidae comprising secondary dietary items. These six taxa made up 94% of the prey individuals eaten by Kamimuria. Data analysis using a selectivity index revealed that these stoneflies fed indiscriminately, eating individual prey taxa in proportion to their availability in the environment. Large and small Kamimuria exploited essentially the same prey. A comparison of the diet of Kamimuria with the diets of four sympatric Odonata indicated that the degree of interspecific similarity was determined by the extent of overlap in microhabitat use. Diets of Euphaea decorata (Zygoptera) larvae, which live under cobbles, were most similar to Kamimuria. This is the first – albeit limited – study of the gut contents of a tropical Asian stonefly. The results suggest that these predators have the potential to limit benthic invertebrate abundance but, because Kamimuria larvae feed unselectively, community structure may not be affected by their activities.  相似文献

Predation is probably the most important male mortality factor in insect species with courtship displays that render males performing them conspicuous targets of predators. Sexually active Mediterranean fruit fly males, Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), aggregate in leks, where they participate in agonistic encounters and engage in visual, acoustic and pheromone-calling displays to attract receptive females. The objective of this study was to assess: a) whether sexually displaying C. capitata males in leks inside host and non-host foliage are subject to predation by the most prominent predators yellow-jacket wasps, Vespula germanica (F.), and if so, b) whether olfactory, visual or auditive stimuli are used by foraging wasps in locating male C. capitata prey. Studies were carried out in a citrus orchard and surroundings on the island of Chios, Greece. Observations were conducted using perforated containers hung within mulberry, fig or citrus foliage. Living C. capitata flies of different sex and either mature or immature were placed inside. Our results show that the yellowjacket wasps have learned to associate the presence of sexually active medfly males aggregated in leks with their prey's pheromone (kairomone). Foraging wasps, flying through the crowns of host trees, responded to the odour source of C. capitata male pheromone by approaching from downwind. Even inside dense citrus tree foliage, wasps keyed in on aggregations of pheromone-calling males using olfactory stimuli. Stimuli of visual and acoustic male signalling were only used at close range, after having followed the pheromone plume close to its source. Visual cues played a greater role in directing wasp foraging under more open and exposed host foliage conditions. Odour-based foraging of wasps inside host foliage in the mid-morning hours, when medfly male lekking activities peak, shifted gradually to a more visual-based host fruit patrolling in the afternoons to capture ovipositing and feeding medfly females. On ripe fruit, particularly fig, V. germanica visual prey hunting also included the capture of feeding medfly males, other feeding Diptera, as well as medfly larvae extracted from wasp-made perforations in the fruit.  相似文献

Notonectids are well‐known predators in aquatic habitats, where mosquito larvae, chironomids, and cladocerans constitute their main diet. Our purpose was to assess the effect of structural complexity on the predatory ability of Buenoa fuscipennis, a common predator in aquatic habitats of Buenos Aires city (Argentina). Buenoa fuscipennis showed type 2 functional responses in both the presence and absence of prey refuge and no differences in attack rate or handling time between refuge treatments. Regarding mosquito size classes, B. fuscipennis exhibited a significantly higher preference for 2nd instar larvae and no predation on pupae. In the presence of mosquito larvae and alternative prey, B. fuscipennis preferred mosquitoes over chironomid larvae and adult cladocerans over mosquito larvae. No switching behavior was detected in our experiments. Habitat structure only slightly affected the predator´s consumption rates on mosquito larvae. Overall, preference for prey did not vary with the presence of refuge, except for the preference for mosquitoes over chironomid larvae, which was significantly decreased in the presence of refuge as a consequence of reduced predation on mosquito larvae. The results suggest that B. fuscipennis could efficiently control mosquitoes in structurally simple habitats where chironomids are the most abundant alternative prey but not in temporary pools where cladocerans are abundant.  相似文献

The winter diet of great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) was studied in the major lakes of Insubria region, N Italy, in 2000–2003 by analysing stomach and oesophagus contents of birds found dead. Winter diet of cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) was studied using pellet analysis. Diet was expressed in terms of numerical abundance, frequency and biomass of prey. A detailed methodology is described of how to prepare a reference collection of otoliths, pharyngeal bones and chewing pads (key-elements), essential for species-specific identification of fish remains in stomachs and pellets, and to estimate ingested fish biomass. Correlations between mass (mg) of key-elements and mass of corresponding fish were significant, and exponential regression models were used to calculate biomass of each single prey item directly from the mass of its key-elements. Advantages of this method are compared with the more traditional two step approach in which size of elements is used to estimate fish length, followed by calculating fresh mass from fish length. Cyprinids formed the largest part of the diet for both predators. Great crested grebes selected small prey, feeding mainly on bleak (Alburnus alburnus alborella), while diet composition of cormorants varied significantly in relation to prey availability. Alboglossiphonia heteroclita has an annual life cycle in Tabley Mere, England. Egg-carrying leeches occurred from early June to mid-July. Young were released from parents in August, and the old cohort died soon after. The mean weight of recruited young increased in early autumn, declined over winter due to low feeding activity, and increased again from early spring until the leeches reproduced. The disappearance of leeches from the littoral zone in winter was due to their migration into deeper waters.Six species of snails collected from shallow and deep waters did not harbour leeches inside their shells or mantle cavities at any time of the year. Laboratory experiments confirmed that the leech does not use snails as a refuge.A serological technique identified the gut contents of field-collected A. heteroclita. Leeches had fed most extensively on oligochaetes followed by snails and then chironomids, lightly on Asellus and caddisflies, and scarcely on amphiphods and cladocerans. In laboratory experiments, in which four prey taxa were offered simultaneously to leeches, the descending order of utilization was oligochaetes, chironomids, Asellus and snails.  相似文献
