The skeleton of a middle-aged female showing an unusual pattern of congenital, traumatic, and degenerative pathology was recovered from a small Kayenta Anasazi site located near the confluence of Bright Angel Creek with the Colorado River in the Inner Gorge of Grand Canyon. The atlas is fused with the base of the skull and C2 is fused with C3. The cervical region was subjected to hyperextension, perhaps through use of a tumpline, with resultant reduction of the neural canal to 8 mm, a condition that quite likely led to neurological problems. The skeleton also includes a depression fracture of the lateral condyle of the left tibia. Complete, bilateral spondylolysis of L5 led to an olisthesis of approximately 15 mm. The disc between L5 and S1 then ossified, most likely from staphylococcus bacteremia, making the olisthesis permanent and thereby creating a unique arachaeological specimen. Although spondylolysis is usually viewed as a stress fracture, the general pattern of pathology in this individual makes it necessary to consider an etiology of acute trauma.  相似文献

Spondylolysis of the lower back, particularly that involving the isthmus between the superior and inferior articular processes (pars inter-articularis), is generally attributed to stress fracturing caused by movement of the affected vertebra relative to the vertebra below. The finding of isthmic spondylolysis in the first vertebra of a fused sacrum is thus unusual and requires explanation. Although unrepresented in the clinical literature, sacral spondylolysis has been reported for archaeological specimens and appears to be especially prevalent in North American Inuit. A study of 373 Inuit sacra from Alaska and Canada produced 16 examples of spondylolysis (eight from each area). All but one of the affected individuals were male, and nearly all were young adults, many between 18 and 20 years of age. All cases of sacral spondylolysis observed in this study were judged to have resulted from stress fracturing that occurred while S1 was still unfused, and most appear to have been in the process of healing, following fusion of S1 with S2, when death occurred. The high frequency observed in these people is attributed to unusual stresses becoming concentrated in the lower back of adolescent males due to such activities as weight lifting, wrestling, kayak paddling, and harpooning, combined with, and perhaps even contributing to, delayed maturation (S1-S2 fusion) of the sacrum. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This study reports the findings of complete bilateral separation of the neural arch (spondylolysis) in 176 inhumations from the Hyatt Site, Tumon Bay, which is located on the west side of the island of Guam. Skeletons were excavated and analyzed by the Paul H. Rosendahl Inc. (PHRI) team in 1989–1990. The inhumations were associated with the pre-European Latte Period (circa 1,200–1,521 A.D.). This period was characterized by the use of large stone pillars, called latte sets, for the construction of houses. Of the 176 individuals, only 38 adult skeletons had complete spines, and 21% (8/38) of these had evidence of spondylolysis in their lumbar vertebrae, particularly in L-5. The age of the eight individuals range from 30 to 50 years. No children were found with spondylolysis. Of the males 29.4% (5/17) had spondylolysis, as did 14.3% (3/21) of the females. However, the difference between the sexes was not statistically significant. Though the sample is small, it is suggested that the high incidence of lumbar spondylolysis found in these ancient Chamorros was related to lower back traumatic events. The transport of latte stones, involving hyperextension and torque of the lower back, while dragging the stones, probably contributed to the development of microfractures in the spine and subsequent spondylolysis. If this hypothesis is correct, then both males and females appear to have been participants in an organized community labor force. Summary The immunostimulator pyran copolymer and the antitumor agent 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) have been studied to determine their effect on T and B lymphocytes from BALB/c mice bearing a syngeneic tumor, Madison lung 109 carcinoma. Indirect immunofluorescent and mitogenic assays revealed that the tumor-bearing controls usually had T and B cell populations lower than those observed for the normal controls. The tumor-bearing group treated with BCNU generally had T and B cell levels lower than the tumor controls. The administration of pyran resulted in an increase of T cells and a temporary increase in the B cell population. Although this increase in the B cell population of tumor-bearing mice treated with pyran is higher than that seen for the untreated tumor controls it was never higher than in the normal control mice. The experimental results indicate that pyran appears to reconstitute the depressed T cell population and has a transitory effect on the B cell population resulting from tumor burden.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine examples of spondylolysis in which the pattern of separation was clearly asymmetrical, in order to learn more about the process of bone separation that produces this condition. Although the primary focus was on unilateral complete separation, examples of asymmetry represented by incomplete separation and by complete bilateral separation where the separation sites are in different locations on the two sides were included. Two collections were used, one consisting of Canadian Inuit skeletons curated at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and the other of 48 individual examples of asymmetrical spondylolysis from sites in a variety of localities curated by several different institutions. The first collection was studied primarily to observe early manifestations of spondylolysis, particularly incomplete separation, while various patterns of asymmetrical complete separation were the focus of the second. The results indicate that asymmetry is part of the earliest osteological picture of spondylolysis, with right-sidedness predominating, a condition perhaps related in some way to handedness. The right-side predominance appears to decrease with age. The ratio of unilateral to bilateral separation ranges from 3-33% in different studies, and a significant number of the unilateral separations have spina bifida occurring in the same vertebra. Overall, the specimens examined here, considered along with clinical cases, nicely illustrate a progression of spondylolysis. A unilateral separation may heal, it may progress to bilateral separation, or it may remain as a permanent condition, producing a pattern of degenerative changes that can include spondylolisthesis. A unilateral healing of bilateral complete separation is likely a rare phenomenon, at least after the separations have reached a certain level of maturity.  相似文献

The authors consider the spondylolysis a polyetiologic abnormality with an important part of congenital factors in its origin. The frequency of spondylolysis can be considered a feature characterizing a population. This opinion is confirmed by finds in skeletal materials from old Slavonic and Slavonic-Avaric cemeteries. The frequency of spondylolysis in the Slavonic part is significantly lower than in the Slavonic-Avaric part of the materials. The share of unilateral spondylolysis is also different (15 and 7%) when comparing these two population groups, but statistically insignificant. The so-called "combined" type of spondylolysis is, however, significantly higher in the number of unilateral cases of spondylolysis than in the bilateral ones.  相似文献

The prevalence of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis was studied in an adult skeletal series from a rural English medieval archaeological site. Attempts were made to evaluate the association of three aspects of lumbo-sacral skeletal morphology (pelvic incidence (a measure of the anterior inclination of the sacral table), lumbar transverse process width, and the presence of lumbo-sacral spina bifida occulta) with spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis. Results indicated a high prevalence of spondylolysis compared with a modern reference population, but few cases of spondylolisthesis were identified. Analysis of prevalence with respect to age suggests that in the study population, pars interarticularis defects generally formed late in the growth period or early in adult life. The study group showed a high mean pelvic incidence compared with modern Western Europeans, indicating a more steeply inclined sacral table, which may have elevated the risk of developing pars interarticularis defects. However, no statistically valid association could be demonstrated between the presence/absence of spondylolysis and pelvic incidence in the study material. There was no evidence for a link between lumbar transverse process index or lumbo-sacral spina bifida occulta and spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis. It is concluded that the potential role of lumbo-sacral morphology, as well as of activity regimes, should be considered when interpreting spondylolysis in paleopathological studies. If the frequency of spondylolysis is to some extent an indicator of past activity regimes, it may reflect lifestyle in younger individuals rather than in mature adults. Further work investigating the link between spondylolysis and lumbo-sacral morphological variables in premodern populations would be of value.  相似文献

In a continuous series of 300 patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma the site of the primary lesion was recorded, and incidence rates per unit area of skin were calculated. These rates were high for the face, back and upper arm and low for the abdomen, buttocks, forearm and hand for both sexes. Rates for the leg were high for the women but low for the men. Tumours on the back were evenly distributed among the men but occurred less frequently on the lower back among the women. In general, sites that were usually covered by clothing had lower rates than those usually exposed, with the exception of the forearms and hands. No relation was seen between tumour site and age, sex, depth of invasion or month of diagnosis. Superficial spreading and nodular melanomas did not differ in their site distribution. Incidence rates per unit area at different ages were estimated for sites grouped by their degree of usual exposure: while the rates for unexposed sites were low, those for usually or intermittently exposed sites were higher and similar to each other.  相似文献

“Twentieth-century disease”, or “total allergy syndrome”, is a condition attributed to hypersensitivity to the environment that may sometimes be seen as so serious that the patient is incapable of living in the modern world. Although the popular media frequently carry stories about it, there is little scientific literature. It is diagnosed by clinical ecologists, who maintain, among other theories, that susceptible individuals experience an overload in assaults by artificial materials in the environment. The patients usually have multiple ill defined symptoms for which no organic cause can be found, but they vigorously resist psychiatric referral, as they attribute their symptoms to allergy. A group of 18 patients who were purportedly suffering from 20th-century disease were referred to a university psychiatric consultation liaison service. They virtually all had a long history of visits to physicians, and their symptoms were characteristic of several well known psychiatric disorders. The case histories and management of three of them are presented. Although this group of patients may have been atypical in that they had more severe psychologic symptoms, the experience indicates that a psychiatric diagnosis ought to be considered. The symptoms of 20th-century disease have much in common with other conditions known to physicians for centuries.  相似文献

In studies of tumour growth, and particularly of tumour treatment with phase-specific chemotherapeutic agents, the fraction labelled mitosis technique is frequently used to estimate the kinetic properties of the cell population making up the tumour. We show here that the FLM technique is in principle very insensitive to the behaviour of slowly cycling cells, even if these constitute a large proportion of the total cell population. Furthermore, since the rate of DNA synthesis is frequently lower in slowly growing cells than in those growing rapidly, there is a higher probability of labelling error associated with the former cells. In view of these theoretical and experimental considerations, it is suggested that considerable caution be used when applying the FLM technique to heterogeneous cell populations such as those of solid tumours.  相似文献

1. Trade-offs are often predicted to occur between energetically costly activities, such as somatic growth and eliciting immune responses to parasites. Although parasitism frequently reduces growth via lowered consumption, it remains unclear if the energetic demands of generating immune responses also affect the digestive physiological processes necessary for growth. Moreover, as local environmental conditions affect energetic investment towards growth and immune responses, the extent of any digestive–immune response trade-offs may vary among populations and not be fixed at the species-level. 2. To test these ideas, melanisation – a general innate immune response – was first induced in damselfly larvae (Enallagma vesperum) from two populations. The study then quantified growth and consumption rates, assimilation and production efficiencies, and daily metabolic rates to determine if digestive–immune response trade-offs were present and, if so, whether they differed between populations. 3. There was no evidence of any trade-offs between immune responses and digestive physiology components in either population. However, the results did show that populations differentially allocated energy towards different digestive physiology components after an immune response was elicited: one population increased their relative consumption and daily metabolic rates, while the other population had lower assimilation efficiencies and consumption rates. 4. Although researchers lack a mechanistic understanding of the observed population-level differences, these results suggest that accounting for population-level variation in digestive physiology and immune responses is critical to inferences about how immunological defences to parasitism may affect the ability for organisms to both acquire and utilise resources.  相似文献

The repeated Prisoner's Dilemma is usually known as a story of tit-for-tat (TFT). This remarkable strategy has won both of Robert Axelrod's tournaments. TFT does whatever the opponent has done in the previous round. It will cooperate if the opponent has cooperated, and it will defect if the opponent has defected. But TFT has two weaknesses: (i) it cannot correct mistakes (erroneous moves) and (ii) a population of TFT players is undermined by random drift when mutant strategies appear which play always-cooperate (ALLC). Another equally simple strategy called 'win-stay, lose-shift' (WSLS) has neither of these two disadvantages. WSLS repeats the previous move if the resulting payoff has met its aspiration level and changes otherwise. Here, we use a novel approach of stochastic evolutionary game dynamics in finite populations to study mutation-selection dynamics in the presence of erroneous moves. We compare four strategies: always-defect (ALLD), ALLC, TFT and WSLS. There are two possible outcomes: if the benefit of cooperation is below a critical value then ALLD is selected; if the benefit of cooperation is above this critical value then WSLS is selected. TFT is never selected in this evolutionary process, but lowers the selection threshold for WSLS.  相似文献

Several recent studies report how laboratory-raised, non-human primates exposed to tool use can exhibit intelligent behaviors, such as imitation and reference vocal control, that are never seen in their wild counterparts. Tool-use training appears to forge a novel cortico-cortical connection that underlies this boost in capacity, which normally exists only as latent potential in lower primates. Although tool-use training is patently non-naturalistic, its marked effects on brain organization and behavior could shed light on the evolution of higher intelligence in humans.  相似文献

Necessary but radical operation which results in short-circuits between various levels of the digestive tract, with or without resections of portions of the esophagus, stomach or intestine, frequently cures the condition for which the operation was done, but leaves the patient with difficult nutritional problems. These nutritional disturbances are usually associated with inability to maintain or gain weight as a result of badly regulated movement of food material through the altered digestive tract, and by the removal or diversion of important digestive secretions, such as those elaborated by the stomach, pancreas, duodenum and small bowel. Increased intestinal rate and diminished specific gastrointestinal secretions reduce the ability of the small bowel to properly absorb food, with resulting malnutrition, deficiency disease, and at times specific avitaminosis. Inability to absorb fat and fat-soluble substances is a constant feature of these conditions. Successful treatment of the nutritional problems involves constant, prolonged overfeeding of nonbulky foods, usually given in regular, frequently administered meals of small volume. Vitamin concentrates may occasionally be of some temporary assistance but are not needed if a balanced diet is given and may cause undesirable and sometimes dangerous symptoms. The use of supplemental substances, such as liver extract and a wetting agent, such as "Tween 80," to improve fat absorption have been demonstrated to be of value.The postoperative conditions described are fairly similar to the condition known as sprue, and it is possible that the general principles underlying the treatment of this disease apply to the entire group of post-operative nutritional disturbances alluded to.  相似文献

Halo nevi, also termed Sutton nevi, are defined as benign melanocytic nevi that are surrounded by an area of depigmentation resembling a halo. Halo nevi are common in children and young adults, with a mean age at onset of 15 years. The incidence in the population is estimated to be approximately 1%. Affected individuals frequently have multiple lesions which are usually localized on the back. A familial tendency for halo nevi has been reported. The etiology of halo nevi is unknown. It is an autoimmune response and T lymphocytes are considered to play a key role in the progressive destruction of nevus cells. Halo nevi may be associated with autoimmune disorders such as vitiligo, Hashimoto thyroiditis, alopecia areata, celiac disease, atopic dermatitis and others. It has been proved that halo nevi are detected after an intense sun exposure especially after sunburns. The etiology of halo nevi, association with malignant melanoma and the role of sun exposure in the development of halo nevi are discussed.  相似文献

Loss of trabeculae in cancellous bone is often attributed to a general decline in the bone mass leading to fracture of the thin trabeculae. It has never been investigated whether trabecular perforation may have any other biomechanical mechanism. In this paper, an alternative hypothesis is proposed and tested using a computational model. Taking it as given that osteoclastic resorption is targeted to microdamage, it is hypothesised that the creation of a resorption cavity during normal bone remodelling could cause a stress-concentration in the bone tissue. If the resorption cavities were excessively deep, as is seen during osteoporosis, then this stress concentration may be sufficient to generate more microdamage so that osteoclasts "chase" newly formed damage leading to perforation. If this were true then we should find that, for a given trabecular thickness, there is a critical depth of resorption cavity such that smaller cavities refill whereas deeper cavities cause microdamage accumulation, continued osteoclast activity, and eventual trabecular perforation. Computer simulation is used to test this hypothesis. Using a remodelling stimulus calculated from both strain and damage and a simplified finite element model of a trabeculum with cavities of different sizes, it is predicted that such a critical depth of resorption cavity does indeed exist. Therefore we suggest that an increase in resorption depth relative to the thickness of trabeculae may be responsible for trabecular perforation during osteoporosis, rather than simply trabecular fracture due to insufficient strength.  相似文献

Abstract Although much theory depends on the genome‐wide rate of deleterious mutations, good estimates of the mutation rate are scarce and remain controversial. Furthermore, mutation rate may not be constant, and a recent study suggests that mutation rates are higher in mildly stressful environments. If mutation rate is a function of condition, then individuals carrying more mutations will tend to be in worse condition and therefore produce more mutations. Here I examine the mean fitnesses of sexual and asexual populations evolving under such condition‐dependent mutation rates. The equilibrium mean fitness of a sexual population depends on the shape of the curve relating fitness to mutation rate. If mutation rate declines synergistically with increasing condition the mean fitness will be much lower than if mutation rate declines at a diminishing rate. In contrast, asexual populations are less affected by condition‐dependent mutation rates. The equilibrium mean fitness of an asexual population only depends on the mutation rate of the individuals in the least loaded class. Because such individuals have high fitness and therefore a low mutation rate, asexual populations experience less genetic load than sexual populations, thus increasing the twofold cost of sex.  相似文献
