Studies were carried out to investigate the effects of 5°, 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°, 35°, 40° and 45°C on growth, sexual maturity, reproduction and survival of the freshwater planorbid snail, Gyraulus convexiusculus, vector of echinostomiasis, under laboratory conditions. The growth rate of juvenile and sexually mature snails was at minimum at 15°C and was maximum at 35°C. Sexual maturation time was minimum at 35°C and maximum at 20°C. Fecundity was minimum at 15°C and maximum at 35°C. The minimum average and maximum number of eggs per egg capsule was reached at 35°C and lowest at 15°C. 30°C was the optimum temperature for survival of juvenile snails, while sexually mature snails reached maximum survival time at 20°C.  相似文献

Summary Coryphantha vivipara (Nutt.) Britton & Rose var. deserti (Engelm.) W.T. Marshall (Cactaceae) survived snow and tissue temperatures of-12°C in southern Nevada. However, the freezing point depression of the cell sap was only about 0.9°C. When the nocturnal air temperature in the laboratory was reduced from 10°C to-10°C for one night, the optimum temperature for CO2 uptake shifted from 10°C to 6°C and uptake was reduced 70%, but full recovery to the original values occurred in 4 days. Nocturnal temperatures of-15°C killed 2 out of 5 plants and-20°C killed 5 out of 5, as judged by lack of net CO2 uptake at night over a 2-month observation period. when the stems were cooled at 2° C/h, supercooling to about-6°C occurred followed by an exothermic reaction that presumably represented the freezing of extracellular water. When the subzero temperature was lowered further, no other exothermic reaction was observed and the cells became progressively dehydrated. Freezing-induced tissue death was ascribed to this cellular dehydration, which led to about 94% loss of intracellular water at-15°C. when the tissue temperature was lowered, the ability of chlorenchyma cells to plasmolyze and to take up a stain decreased, both being nearly 70% inhibited at-15°C and completely abolished at-20°C. Some cold-bardening occurred, since lowering the air temperature from 30° to-10°C in 10°C increments at weekly intervals caused the subzero temperature for 50% inhibition of staining to decrease from-10°C to-17°C. Extension of the range of C. vivipara to regions with wintertime freezing apparently reflects the tolerance of considerable freeze dehydration by its protoplasts.  相似文献

Synopsis Riffle dwelling fantail darters (Etheostoma flabellare) selected lower temperatures in winter (19.3°C) compared to pool dwelling johnny darters (E. nigrum; 22.0°C. A similar trend was evident in summer tests (fantail darters, 20.3°C; johnny darters, 22.9°C). Summer tested animals selected higher temperatures than winter tested animals maintained at the same acclimation temperature and photoperiod. When tested together in the same gradient, both species appeared not to thermoregulate, but tended to avoid each other. Critical thermal maxima (CTMax) did not differ between seasons for either species (fantail darters, 31.1°C winter, 31.3°C summer; johnny darters, 30.9°C winter, 30.5°C summer). Differences in the thermal responses of these darters correlated with differences in their respective habitats.  相似文献

The present study includes the effect of temperature on the survival of young and adult snails, embryonic development, embryonic growth and egg laying of Indoplanorbis exustus. In Indoplanorbis exustus the bottom lethal temperature was 7.0°C and 7.5°C for young and adults respectively. while the upper lethal temperature was 34.0°C and 32.0°C for young and adult snails respectively. Between the temperatures 12.5°C and 36.5°C the embryonic development was accelerated and the incubation period was shortened. The growth of embryos was found to be faster at 25.0°C. The optimum temperature for egg laying was observed at 25.0°C.  相似文献

The effect of temperature from 10 °C to 35 °C on the growth, total lipid content, and fatty acid composition of three species of tropical marine microalgae, Isochrysis sp., Nitzschia closterium, N. paleacea (formerly frustulum), and the Tahitian Isochrysis sp. (T.ISO), was investigated.Cultures of N. closterium, Isochrysis sp. and T.ISO grew very slowly at 35 °C, while N. closterium did not grow at temperatures higher than 30 °C or lower than 20 °C. N. paleacea was low-temperature tolerant, with cells growing slowly at 10 °C. N. paleacea produced the highest percentage of lipids at 10 °C, while the other species produced maximum amounts of lipid at 20 °C. None of the species maintained high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) at high growth temperature and there was a significant inverse relationship between the percentage of PUFAs and temperature for N. paleacea. A curved relationship was found between temperature and percentage of PUFA for N. closterium and tropical Isochrysis sp., with the maximum production of PUFA at 25 °C and 20 °C, respectively. The two Nitzschia species produced higher levels of the essential fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid [20:5(n-3)] at lower growth temperatures, but the two Isochrysis species had little change in percentage of 20:5(n-3) with temperature. Summary The effect of pH, temperature, and carbon and nitrogen interaction on the growth and sporulation ofAspergillus nidulans (Eidam)Wint.,A. rugulosus Thom &Raper,A. variecolor (Berk. &Br.)Thom &Raper andA. quadrilineatus was studied. All the moulds could grow on a wide range of pH (2.0 to 12.0) but the growth was poor on too acid and too alkaline media. Best growth ofA. rugulosus, A. quadrilineatus, andA. violaceus was seen at pH 6.5 and that ofA. nidulans andA. variecolor at pH 7.0. In general maximum production of perithecia was recorded between pH 6.0 and 8.0.All the above species ofAspergillus under study could grow between a temperature range of 10° C–48° C, but the growth was poor at 10° C and 48° C. The present moulds showed good growth at 20° C, 25°C, and 30° C. At 40° CA. nidulans andA. rugulosus showed moderate growth while the rest of the Aspergilli attained good growth. Temperatures between 20° C–30° C favoured excellent perithecial production.In general, little improvement in growth was noted on media containing good carbon and nitrogen sources. Malic acid was found to be useless when supplied singly. But, poor growth was recorded when supplied in combination with amino acids, amide, and peptone. Development rates were determined for three pteromalid parasitoids of houseflies under constant and varying temperatures from 15 to 35°C.Muscidifurax raptorGirault and Sanders was the fastest developing species, with females completing development in 13.8 days at 32.5°C and 66.5 days at 15°C.Spalangia geminaBoucek females completed development in 20.8 days at 30.0°C and 161 days at 15.0°C, whereasS. cameroniPerkins females completed development in 20.6 days at 30.0°C and 155.5 days at 15.0°C. Male development times were 90.3% of those for femaleS. geminaand 92.7 and 88.6% of those for femaleS. cameroniandM. raptor,respectively. Parasitoid survival was very low at 35°C for all species and noSpalangiasurvived constant exposure to 15.0°C. Exposure to these lethal temperatures for shorter periods indicated that the parasitoids can tolerate them well under conditions more typical of the field. Development rates were modeled using biophysical and degree-day models and the models were tested for their ability to predict development under fluctuating conditions (24–36°C). Neither model was superior for all three species because of interspecific differences in the parasitoids' responses to high temperatures. Agreement between predicted and observed development times for all three species was achieved by small empirical adjustments of a key parameter in the biophysical model.  相似文献

Summary Diapause eggs of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, exposed to 5°C and 0.5°C from 2 or 30 days after oviposition, were examined for changes in contents of glycogen, sorbitol and glycerol. Cold acclimation did not alter the profile of accumulation of sorbitol from that in eggs kept continuously at 25°C. However, acclimation at 5°C resulted in conversion of sorbitol to glycogen, while acclimation at 0.5°C was not accompanied by the utilization of sorbitol. NAD-sorbitol dehydrogenase (NAD-SDH; EC 1.1.1.14) activity was examined in the cold-acclimated eggs. The activity was induced by acclimation at 5°C but not at 0.5°C. Incubation at 0.5°C suppressed any further increase in the activity that had been induced. Temperature-directed changes in NAD-SDH activity paralleled those in sorbitol content. Hatching of the diapause eggs was monitored after cold acclimation for various periods of time and subsequent transfer to 25°C. Incubation at 0.5°C was less effective than 5°C at breaking diapause. The time required for the eggs to hatch in synchrony after acclimation at 5°C coincided with that required for the induction of NAD-SDH activity. These results show that different effects result from acclimation at 5°C and near 0°C with respect to the control of NAD-SDH activity, that utilization of sorbitol is controlled by NAD-SDH activity, and that induction of this activity is temperature-dependent. Preimaginal development, mortality, aphid consumption rate, and size and weight upon reaching the adult stage of the aphidophagous coccinellids Hippodamia convergens Guérin-Méneville and Coccinella septempunctata L. collected from Karditsa, central Greece, were examined at four constant temperatures (14, 17, 20 and 23 °C) and L16:D8. The coccinellids fed on the tobacco aphid, Myzus persicae nicotianae Blackman. Egg, larval and pupal mortality was highest at 14 °C reaching 85.0, 73.8 and 29.4% in H. convergens and 49.3, 75.4 and 58.8% in C. septempunctata, respectively. Total preimaginal development ranged from 57.2 to 70.4 days at 14 °C, and to 16.9 and 22.1 days at 23 °C in H. convergens and C. septempunctata, respectively. Heavier and larger adults of H. convergens were obtained at 17 and 20 ° C. In C. septempunctata temperature did not affect adult weight while the lowest size was observed at 14 and 17 °C. Day-degrees requirements for preimaginal development in H. corvengens were 212.9 above a developmental threshold of 11.0 °C. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 281.5 and 10.7 °C. In H. convergens total and daily aphid consumption ranged from 46.8 aphids at 14 °C to 85.0 aphids at 23 °C and from 1.5 aphids at 14 °C to 9.2 aphids at 23 °C, respectively. The corresponding values for C. septempunctata were 112.0 and 2.7 at 14 °C and 157.7 and 12.4 at 23 °C. The results show the high potential of both predators as biological control agents against the tobacco aphid. The knowledge obtained could be essential for their appropriate use and for the improvement of mass rearing systems.  相似文献

The properties of the ATPase in the facultative thermophile, Bacillus coagulans, grown at thermophilic or mesophilic temperatures were similar. Arrhenius plots did not show discontinuities indicative of thermoadaptation. Magnesium stimulation of the enzyme was dependant on the assay temperature but independant of the growth temperature. The ATPase in cells grown at 35°C or 55°C was equally thermostable at 65°C. In contrast, the ATPase from the mesophile, Bacillus megaterium (T max=42°C) was completely inactivated at 55°C in 5 min.  相似文献

Two sympatric Europeanbeetles, Galerucella calmariensis (L.)and G. pusilla (Duft.) (Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae), have been released in NorthAmerica for biological control of purpleloosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L.(Lythraceae). Because establishment isaffected by environmental conditions, studieswere conducted at temperatures ranging from12.5 to 30 °C to determine differencesin rate of development and survival between thetwo species. No egg hatch occurred at12.5 °C for both species. Eggdevelopment was faster for G.calmariensis than for G. pusilla attemperatures 15 °C. Theminimum threshold temperature for eggdevelopment was lower for G. calmariensisthan G. pusilla. At 12.5 °C, G. calmariensis larvae developed 1.6 daysfaster than G. pusilla, but at 15, 20,25, and 27.5 °C G. pusilla developed2.9, 1.2, 1.1, and 0.6 days faster,respectively, than G. calmariensis. Nodifferences in developmental rate of pupa andtotal development time from egg to adulteclosion were observed for the two species. However, survival of G. calmariensisgenerally was higher than that of G.pusilla at lower temperatures. No differencewas observed in the preoviposition periodbetween the two species except at27.5 °C. The preoviposition period forboth species at 12.5 and 15 °C exceeded50 days and was much higher than for20 °C and above. The long preovipositionperiod suggests that temperatures below15 °C induce reproductive diapause. At15 °C, G. pusilla females livedlonger and also had a longer oviposition periodthan G. calmariensis. However, fasteregg and larval development, and higher survivalat 12.5 °C may give G. calmariensisa competitive advantage over G. pusillain cooler climates.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning of razorback suckers,Xyrauchen texanus, in Lake Mohave occurred from 10–22°C and larvae were collected at water temperatures from 10–15°C in 1982 and 1983. In the laboratory, hatching success was similar from 12–20°C, but reduced hatching success was found at 10°C while none hatched a 8°C. Development rate and oxygen consumption were positively related to incubation temperature. Direct effects of ambient Lake Mohave water temperatures on hatching success of razorback sucker embryos are considered minimal. Historical spawning temperatures for the species are hypothesized based upon successful incubation temperatures and comparison to the white sucker,Catostomus commersoni.  相似文献

Aceria mississippiensis andCoptophylla caroliniani (Prostigmata: Eriophyidiae) were found on wild geranium,Geranium carolinianum L., in northern Mississippi. About onehalf of the total developmental time was spent in the egg stage for each species. The developmental threshold forA. mississippiensis was 5.5±1.04°C and 7.3±0.93°C forC. caroliniani. The optimum temperature for each developmental stage was between 25 and 29°C.C. caroliniani failed to develop at 36°C, whereasA. mississippiensis failed at 40°C. Day-degree requirements to complete development were 100.7±3.6 Do and 154.6±4.1 Do forC. caroliniani andA. mississippiensis, respectively.Mean female longevity at 20°C was 17.4 (range 12–21) days forC. caroliniani and 16.5 (range 15–19) days forA. mississippiensis. The shortest pre-oviposition period was 2.2 days forC. caroliniani at 20°C and 1.7 days forA. mississippiensis at 25°C, and the length of pre-oviposition period increased with temperature above 25°C for both species.Maximum egg production ofC. caroliniani andA. mississippiensis occurred at 20°C. There were no differences (P0.05) in number of eggs per day at temperatures of 20, 25 and 32°C for each species, but there was a tendency to lay more eggs per day with increasing temperature. The percentages of egg hatch were not significantly different at these temperatures. Biology and life table parameters of Brennandania lambi (Krczal) were studied at different temperatures while feeding on white mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) mycelium cultured on mushroom compost. The duration of egg and larva development, preoviposition and oviposition period, female longevity, and the time to 50% mortality declined as temperature increased from 16 to 28°C. The threshold temperature of development (female) was 9°C and the thermal constant for completion of development (female) was 195 day-degrees. At 16, 20, 24 and 28°C, the total fecundity (eggs/female) was 71, 67, 66 and 57, respectively and the daily fecundity rate (eggs/female/day) was 5.6, 8.7, 8.7 and 9.1, respectively. The sex ratio (female/male) ranged from 1.9 to 2.1 at 16–28°C. At 16, 20, 24 and 28°C, the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) was 0.11, 0.18, 0.22 and 0.27, respectively, and the population doubling time was 6.1, 3.9, 3.2 and 2.5 days, respectively. All life stages of the mite died when exposed to 35°C constant temperature for 24h, or to 32°C constant temperature for 12 days or to 31–35°C (average 32.9°C) ambient temperature for 4 days. Brennandania lambi completed development only when fed on Ag. bisporus mycelium growing on mushroom compost. It could not survive on mushroom mycelia of Auricularia auricula, Au. polytricha, Ganoderma lucidum, Hericium erinaceus, Lentinus edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, P. sajor-caju and Tremella fuciformis.  相似文献

Summary The daily movements of two co-occurring tiger beetle species were monitored in conjunction with changes in microclimate along streams in Northeast Arizona. Cicindela oregona and C. tranquebarica temporarily segregated across areas of beach exhibiting different microclimates. C. oregona progressively moved from the dry upper beach to the wet stream edge as beach temperatures increased and humidity decreased. The actively foraged throughout the day in this moist habitat at air temperatures between 25 and 38°C. C. tranquebarica remained on the dry, upper portions of the beach and shuttled between sun and shade at air temperatures above 35°C. Only when stream edge temperatures exceeded 30°C was tranquebarica found in this subhabitat. Both species exhibited physiological tolerances in the laboratory that were consistent with their microhabitat preferences in the field. Although both species had similar high lethal temperatures (47–48°C) in saturated air, oregona died at lower temperatures (39–43°C) than tranquebarica (46–47°C) under dry (0% RH) conditions. C. oregona was considerably more active than tranquebarica at body temperatures below 30°C and exhibited higher levels of active metabolism between 25 and 40°C. In addition, C. tranquebarica exhibited significantly lower water loss rates than oregona at 30, 35 and 40°C.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on thereproduction and longevity of Podisusnigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera:Pentatomidae) fed with Alabamaargillacea (Hübner) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae) larvae was studied. This predatorwas reared at constant temperatures of 20, 23,25, 28, 30 and 33 ± 0.2 °C, all atrelative humidity of 60 ± 10%, and aphotoperiod of L:D 14:10. Fecundity of P.nigrispinus at the various temperatures rangedfrom 401.2 (33 °C) to 841.3 (28 °C) eggs/female. The preoviposition,oviposition peak, and declining ovipositionperiods of P. nigrispinus were affectedby temperature [preoviposition period: 4.0 (33 °C) to 13.2 (20 °C) days;duration of oviposition peak period: 9.0 (33 °C) to 33.0 (20 °C) days; andduration of declining oviposition period: 16.0(33 °C) to 46.0 (20 °C) days].Longevity of females and males of P.nigrispinus ranged from 28.4 (33 °C) to88.6 (20 °C) days, and from 42.7 (33 °C); to 114.3 (20 °C) days,respectively. These data are useful in relationto the development of population dynamicsmodels to underpin programmes of biologicalcontrol.  相似文献

Two oxidases were found to be present in membranes from the facultative thermophile Bacillus coagulans grown at 55°C, compared to one in cells grown at 37°C. Cytochrome spectra and inhibitors of the respiratory chain identified them as cytochrome oxidases aa 3 and d. Both were present in membranes from 55°C grown cells, but only cytochrome oxidase aa 3 was found in membranes from 37°C grown cells. The presence of cytochrome d in 55°C grown cultures was found to be due to decreased oxygen tension and not to the high growth temperature. This was confirmed by (a) induction of cytochrome d at 37°C under conditions of oxygen limitation and (b) its repression at 55°C under conditions of high aeration and its subsequent induction on lowering the dissolved oxygen concentration in chemostat cultures. Two cytochromes b (max 558 and max 562) were present in both 37°C and 55°C grown cells. Results from the inhibition of substrate oxidation by membranes suggested different pathways of electron transport by the respiratory chain.  相似文献

Thirty New England dog whelks (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Nassariidae), Nassarius trivittatus, were tested as a group for 3 days in a long linear gradient trough encompassing a thermal gradient ranging from 5°C to 45°C. The modal thermal preferendum of the snails lay between 30°C and 35°C. The lowest temperature interval voluntarily occupied by the snails was 15–20°C, the highest 35–40°C. The ability of 17 strains of genus Epidermophyton (15 strains belonging to Epidermophyton floccosum, one to E. floccosum var. nigricans and one to E. stockdaleae) to grow at different temperatures (4 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C, 34 °C, 37 °C and 40 °C) was stated.The strains were inoculated on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar and regularly controled over a period of 14 days when the plates were incubated at 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C, 34 °C, 37 °C and 40 °C, and over a period of 70 days when the temperature was 4 °C. The optimal growth of E. floccosum was observed at 28 °C and 31 °C, and no signs of growth were recorded neither at 4 °C nor at 40 °C. The optimal development of E. stockdaleae was observed at 25 °C and 28 °C. This species grew from 4 °C to 31 °C.  相似文献

Phialospores of Verticillium malthousei Ware were atomized onto acclimatized water agar and incubated for 3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 hr at 12 to 36 °C at 6 °C intervals. Germination occurred at all temperatures exclusive of 36 °C with maximum germination (90–98 %) occurring in 24 hr at 12 °C, 12 hr at 18 °C, 9 hr at 24° and 30 °C. Volatiles from: 1) horse manure compost colonized by Agaricus bisporus; 2) mycelium impregnated casing (soil); or 3) casing supporting mature and immature mushrooms had no statistically significant effect on spore germination of V. malthousei when measured after 12 hr at 24 °C. However, a tendency towards inhibition after 6 and 12 hr at 24° and 12 °C, respectively, suggests the inhibition is temperature and time dependent.
