Motor timing tasks have been employed in studies of neurodevelopmental disorders such as developmental dyslexia and ADHD, where they provide an index of temporal processing ability. Investigations of these disorders have used different stimulus parameters within the motor timing tasks that are likely to affect performance measures. Here we assessed the effect of auditory and visual pacing stimuli on synchronised motor timing performance and its relationship with cognitive and behavioural predictors that are commonly used in the diagnosis of these highly prevalent developmental disorders. Twenty-one children (mean age 9.6 years) completed a finger tapping task in two stimulus conditions, together with additional psychometric measures. As anticipated, synchronisation to the beat (ISI 329 ms) was less accurate in the visually paced condition. Decomposition of timing variance indicated that this effect resulted from differences in the way that visual and auditory paced tasks are processed by central timekeeping and associated peripheral implementation systems. The ability to utilise an efficient processing strategy on the visual task correlated with both reading and sustained attention skills. Dissociations between these patterns of relationship across task modality suggest that not all timing tasks are equivalent.  相似文献

Oscillatory entrainment to the speech signal is important for language processing, but has not yet been studied in developmental disorders of language. Developmental dyslexia, a difficulty in acquiring efficient reading skills linked to difficulties with phonology (the sound structure of language), has been associated with behavioural entrainment deficits. It has been proposed that the phonological ‘deficit’ that characterises dyslexia across languages is related to impaired auditory entrainment to speech at lower frequencies via neuroelectric oscillations (<10 Hz, ‘temporal sampling theory’). Impaired entrainment to temporal modulations at lower frequencies would affect the recovery of the prosodic and syllabic structure of speech. Here we investigated event-related oscillatory EEG activity and contingent negative variation (CNV) to auditory rhythmic tone streams delivered at frequencies within the delta band (2 Hz, 1.5 Hz), relevant to sampling stressed syllables in speech. Given prior behavioural entrainment findings at these rates, we predicted functionally atypical entrainment of delta oscillations in dyslexia. Participants performed a rhythmic expectancy task, detecting occasional white noise targets interspersed with tones occurring regularly at rates of 2 Hz or 1.5 Hz. Both groups showed significant entrainment of delta oscillations to the rhythmic stimulus stream, however the strength of inter-trial delta phase coherence (ITC, ‘phase locking’) and the CNV were both significantly weaker in dyslexics, suggestive of weaker entrainment and less preparatory brain activity. Both ITC strength and CNV amplitude were significantly related to individual differences in language processing and reading. Additionally, the instantaneous phase of prestimulus delta oscillation predicted behavioural responding (response time) for control participants only.  相似文献

Rhythms, or patterns in time, play a vital role in both speech and music. Proficiency in a number of rhythm skills has been linked to language ability, suggesting that certain rhythmic processes in music and language rely on overlapping resources. However, a lack of understanding about how rhythm skills relate to each other has impeded progress in understanding how language relies on rhythm processing. In particular, it is unknown whether all rhythm skills are linked together, forming a single broad rhythmic competence, or whether there are multiple dissociable rhythm skills. We hypothesized that beat tapping and rhythm memory/sequencing form two separate clusters of rhythm skills. This hypothesis was tested with a battery of two beat tapping and two rhythm memory tests. Here we show that tapping to a metronome and the ability to adjust to a changing tempo while tapping to a metronome are related skills. The ability to remember rhythms and to drum along to repeating rhythmic sequences are also related. However, we found no relationship between beat tapping skills and rhythm memory skills. Thus, beat tapping and rhythm memory are dissociable rhythmic aptitudes. This discovery may inform future research disambiguating how distinct rhythm competencies track with specific language functions.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relationship between individual differences in timing movements at the level of milliseconds and performance on selected cognitive and fine motor skills. For this purpose, young adult participants (N = 100) performed a repetitive movement task paced by an auditory metronome at different rates. Psychometric measures included the digit-span and symbol search subtasks from the Wechsler battery as well as the Raven SPM. Fine motor skills were assessed with the Purdue Pegboard test. Motor timing performance was significantly related (mean r = .3) to cognitive measures, and explained both unique and shared variance with information-processing speed of Raven''s scores. No significant relations were found between motor timing measures and fine motor skills. These results show that individual differences in cognitive and motor timing performance is to some extent dependent upon shared processing not associated with individual differences in manual dexterity.  相似文献

Fine motor impairments are frequent complaints in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). While they may develop at an early stage of the disease, they become more problematic as the disease progresses. Tremors and fine motor symptoms may seem related, but evidence suggests two distinct phenomena. The purpose of our study was to investigate the relationships between fine motor skills and clinical characteristics of PD patients. We hypothesized worse fine motor skills to be associated with greater motor severity that is independent of tremor. We measured fine motor abilities using the Grooved Pegboard test (GPT) in each hand separately and collected clinical and demographics data in a cohort of 82 persons with PD. We performed regression analyses between GPT scores and a range of outcomes: motor severity, time from diagnosis, age and tremors. We also explored similar associations using finger and hand dexterity scores from a standardized PD rating scale. Our results indicate that scores on the GPT for each hand, as measures of manual dexterity, are associated with motor severity and time from diagnosis. The presence of tremors was not a confounding factor, as hypothesized, but age was associated with GPT scores for the dominant hand. Motor severity was also associated with hand and finger dexterity as measured by single items from the clinical Parkinson’s rating scale. These findings suggest that the GPT to be useful tool for motor severity assessments of people with PD.  相似文献

Acquired disorders of language represent loss of previously acquired skills, usually with relatively specific impairments. In children with developmental disorders of language, we may also see selective impairment in some skills; but in this case, the acquisition of language or literacy is affected from the outset. Because systems for processing spoken and written language change as they develop, we should beware of drawing too close a parallel between developmental and acquired disorders. Nevertheless, comparisons between the two may yield new insights. A key feature of connectionist models simulating acquired disorders is the interaction of components of language processing with each other and with other cognitive domains. This kind of model might help make sense of patterns of comorbidity in developmental disorders. Meanwhile, the study of developmental disorders emphasizes learning and change in underlying representations, allowing us to study how heterogeneity in cognitive profile may relate not just to neurobiology but also to experience. Children with persistent language difficulties pose challenges both to our efforts at intervention and to theories of learning of written and spoken language. Future attention to learning in individuals with developmental and acquired disorders could be of both theoretical and applied value.  相似文献

Rhythm is important in the production of motor sequences such as speech and song. Deficits in rhythm processing have been implicated in human disorders that affect speech and language processing, including stuttering, autism, and dyslexia. Songbirds provide a tractable model for studying the neural underpinnings of rhythm processing due to parallels with humans in neural structures and vocal learning patterns. In this study, adult zebra finches were exposed to naturally rhythmic conspecific song or arrhythmic song. Immunohistochemistry for the immediate early gene ZENK was used to detect neural activation in response to these two types of stimuli. ZENK was increased in response to arrhythmic song in the auditory association cortex homologs, caudomedial nidopallium (NCM) and caudomedial mesopallium (CMM), and the avian amygdala, nucleus taeniae (Tn). CMM also had greater ZENK labeling in females than males. The increased neural activity in NCM and CMM during perception of arrhythmic stimuli parallels increased activity in the human auditory cortex following exposure to unexpected, or perturbed, auditory stimuli. These auditory areas may be detecting errors in arrhythmic song when comparing it to a stored template of how conspecific song is expected to sound. CMM may also be important for females in evaluating songs of potential mates. In the context of other research in songbirds, we suggest that the increased activity in Tn may be related to the value of song for assessing mate choice and bonding or it may be related to perception of arrhythmic song as aversive.  相似文献

Recently, it was found that rhythmic movements (e.g. locomotion, swimmeret beating) are controlled by mutually coupled endogeneous neural oscillators (Kennedy and Davis, 1977; Pearson and Iles, 1973; Stein, 1974; Shik and Orlovsky, 1976; Grillner and Zangger, 1979). Meanwhile, it has been found out that the phase resetting experiment is useful to investigate the interaction of neural oscillators (Perkel et al., 1963; Stein, 1974). In the preceding paper (Yamanishi et al., 1979), we studied the functional interaction between the neural oscillator which is assumed to control finger tapping and the neural networks which control some tasks. The tasks were imposed on the subject as the perturbation of the phase resetting experiment. In this paper, we investigate the control mechanism of the coordinated finger tapping by both hands. First, the subjects were instructed to coordinate the finger tapping by both hands so as to keep the phase difference between two hands constant. The performance was evaluated by a systematic error and a standard deviation of phase differences. Second, we propose two coupled neural oscillators as a model for the coordinated finger tapping. Dynamical behavior of the model system is analyzed by using phase transition curves which were measured on one hand finger tapping in the previous experiment (Yamanishi et al., 1979). Prediction by the model is in good agreement with the results of the experiments. Therefore, it is suggested that the neural mechanism which controls the coordinated finger tapping may be composed of a coupled system of two neural oscillators each of which controls the right and the left finger tapping respectively.  相似文献

There is some evidence for a role of music training in boosting phonological awareness, word segmentation, working memory, as well as reading abilities in children with typical development. Poor performance in tasks requiring temporal processing, rhythm perception and sensorimotor synchronization seems to be a crucial factor underlying dyslexia in children. Interestingly, children with dyslexia show deficits in temporal processing, both in language and in music. Within this framework, we test the hypothesis that music training, by improving temporal processing and rhythm abilities, improves phonological awareness and reading skills in children with dyslexia. The study is a prospective, multicenter, open randomized controlled trial, consisting of test, rehabilitation and re-test (ID NCT02316873). After rehabilitation, the music group (N = 24) performed better than the control group (N = 22) in tasks assessing rhythmic abilities, phonological awareness and reading skills. This is the first randomized control trial testing the effect of music training in enhancing phonological and reading abilities in children with dyslexia. The findings show that music training can modify reading and phonological abilities even when these skills are severely impaired. Through the enhancement of temporal processing and rhythmic skills, music might become an important tool in both remediation and early intervention programs.

Developmental dyslexia is a complex syndrome whose exact cause remains unknown. It has been suggested that a problem with fatty acid metabolism may play a role, particularly in relation to the visual symptoms exhibited by many dyslexics. We explored this possibility using two self-report questionnaires, designed on the basis of clinical experience, to assess (1) clinical signs of fatty acid deficiency; and (2) symptoms associated with dyslexia in known dyslexic and non-dyslexic subjects. Dyslexic signs and symptoms included the auditory-linguistic and spoken language difficulties traditionally associated with the disorder, as well as visual problems (both with reading and more generally) and motor problems. Fatty acid deficiency signs were significantly elevated in dyslexic subjects relative to controls, particularly within males (P<0.001). In addition, the severity of these clinical signs of fatty acid deficiency was strongly correlated with the severity of dyslexic signs and symptoms not only in the visual domain, but also with respect to auditory, linguistic and motor problems. The pattern of relationships differed somewhat between dyslexic and control groups, and sex differences were also observed. Our findings support the hypothesis that fatty acid metabolism may be abnormal in developmental dyslexia, and indicate the need for further studies using more objective measures.  相似文献

Motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD) are usually assessed with semi-quantitative tests such as the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) which are limited by subjectivity, categorical design, and low sensitivity. Particularly bradykinesia as assessed e.g. with speeded index finger tapping exhibits low validity measures. This exploratory study set out to (i) assess whether force transducer-based objective and quantitative analysis of motor coordination in index finger tapping is able to distinguish between PD patients and controls, and (ii) assess longitudinal changes. Sixteen early-stage and 17 mid-stage PD patients as well as 18 controls were included in the cross-sectional part of the study; thirteen, 16 and 16 individuals of the respective groups agreed in a reassessment 12 months later. Frequency, force, rhythmicity, regularity and laterality of speeded and metronome paced tapping were recorded by digitomotography using a quantitative motor system ("Q-Motor"). Analysis of cross-sectional data revealed most consistent differences between PD patients and controls in variability of tap performance across modalities assessed. Among PD patients, variability of taps and the ability to keep a given rhythm were associated with UPDRS motor and finger tapping scores. After 12 months, laterality parameters were reduced but no other parameters changed significantly. This data suggests that digitomotography provides quantitative and objective measures capable to differentiate PD from non-PD in a small cohort, however, the value of the assessment to track PD progression has to be further evaluated in larger cohorts of patients.  相似文献

Most infants who are later diagnosed with autism show delayed speech and language and/or atypical language profile. There is a large body of research on abnormal speech and language in children with autism. However, auditory development has been relatively under-investigated in autism research, despite its inextricable relationship with language development and despite researchers' ability to detect abnormalities in brain development and behavior in early infancy. In this review, we synthesize research on auditory processing in the prenatal period through infancy and childhood in typically developing children, children at high risk for autism, and children diagnosed with autism. We conclude that there are clear neurobiological and behavioral links between abnormal auditory development and the deficits in social communication seen in autism. We then offer perspectives on the need for a systematic characterization of early auditory development in autism, and identified questions to be addressed in future research on the development of autism.  相似文献

Developmental dyslexics, individuals with an unexplained difficulty reading, have been shown to have deficits in phonological processing -- the awareness of the sound structure of words -- and, in some cases, a more fundamental deficit in rapid auditory processing. In addition, dyslexics show a disruption in white matter connectivity between posterior and frontal regions. These results give continued support for a neurobiological etiology of developmental dyslexia. However, more research will be required to determine the possible causal relationships between these neurobiological disruptions and dyslexia.  相似文献

It has recently been conjectured that dyslexia arises from abnormal auditory sampling. What sampling rate is altered and how it affects reading remains unclear. We hypothesized that by impairing phonemic parsing abnormal low-gamma sampling could yield phonemic representations of unusual format and disrupt phonological processing and verbal memory. Using magnetoencephalography and behavioral tests, we show in dyslexic subjects a reduced left-hemisphere bias for phonemic processing, reflected in less entrainment to ≈30?Hz acoustic modulations in left auditory cortex. This deficit correlates with measures of phonological processing and rapid naming. We further observed enhanced cortical entrainment at rates beyond 40?Hz in dyslexics and show that this particularity is associated with a verbal memory deficit. These data suggest that a single auditory anomaly, i.e., phonemic oversampling in left auditory cortex, accounts for three main facets of the linguistic deficit in dyslexia.  相似文献

A steadiness-improving intervention was used to determine the contribution of variability in motor unit discharge rate to the fluctuations in index finger acceleration and manual dexterity in older adults. Ten healthy and sedentary old adults (age 72.9 +/- 5.8 yr; 5 men) participated in the study involving abduction of the left index finger. Single motor unit activity was recorded in the first dorsal interosseus muscle before, after 2 wk of light-load training (10% maximal load), and after 4 wk of heavy-load training (70% maximal load). As expected, the light-load training was effective in reducing the fluctuations in index finger acceleration during slow shortening (0.25 +/- 0.12 to 0.13 +/- 0.08 m/s(2)) and lengthening contractions (0.29 +/- 0.10 to 0.14 +/- 0.06 m/s(2)). Along with the decline in the magnitude of the fluctuations, there was a parallel decrease in the coefficient of variation for discharge rate during both contraction types (33.8 +/- 6.8 to 25.0 +/- 5.9%). The heavy-load training did not further improve either the fluctuations in acceleration or discharge rate variability. Furthermore, the manual dexterity of the left hand improved significantly with training (Purdue pegboard test: 11 +/- 3 to 14 +/- 1 pegs). Bivariate correlations indicated that the reduction in fluctuations in motor output during shortening (r(2) = 0.24) and lengthening (r(2) = 0.14) contractions and improvement in manual dexterity (r(2) = 0.26) was directly associated with a decline in motor unit discharge rate variability. There was a strong association between the fluctuations in motor output and manual dexterity (r(2) = 0.56). These results indicate that practice of a simple finger task was accompanied by a reduction in the discharge rate variability of motor units, a decrease in the fluctuations in motor output of a hand muscle, and an improvement in the manual dexterity of older adults.  相似文献

Finger-tapping experiments were conducted to examine whether the dynamics of intrapersonal and interpersonal coordination systems can be described equally by the Haken—Kelso—Bunz model, which describes inter-limb coordination dynamics. This article reports the results of finger-tapping experiments conducted in both systems. Two within-subject factors were investigated: the phase mode and the number of fingers. In the intrapersonal experiment (Experiment 1), the participants were asked to tap, paced by a gradually hastening auditory metronome, looking at their fingers moving, using the index finger in the two finger condition, or the index and middle finger in the four-finger condition. In the interpersonal experiment (Experiment 2), pairs of participants performed the task while each participant used the outside hand, tapping with the index finger in the two finger condition, or the index and middle finger in the four-finger condition. Some results did not agree with the HKB model predictions. First, from Experiment 1, no significant difference was observed in the movement stability between the in-phase and anti-phase modes in the two finger condition. Second, from Experiment 2, no significant difference was found in the movement stability between the in-phase and anti-phase mode in the four-finger condition. From these findings, different coordination dynamics were inferred between intrapersonal and interpersonal coordination systems against prediction from the previous studies. Results were discussed according to differences between intrapersonal and interpersonal coordination systems in the availability of perceptual information and the complexity in the interaction between limbs derived from a nested structure.  相似文献

 Initiation of rapid discrete flexion movements is significantly altered when a secondary rhythmic movement is performed simultaneously with the same limb; the onset of a stimulus-evoked discrete movement tends to occur time-locked to the oscillation: i.e., the rhythmic movement entrains the discrete response. This nonlinear interaction may reflect a specific principle of coordination of motor tasks which are simultaneously executed with the same effector. This part II of a tripartite research report on such single-muscle multiple-task coordination investigates the contribution of the dynamic properties of the muscle and its reflex circuitry to phase entrainment. Assuming a simple threshold-linear relationship between the control signals generated by the central nervous system and the observable kinematic and electromyographic signals, a secondary rhythmic movement will cause an additional phase-dependent delay between the central “go” command and the first observable change in actual kinematics of the compound movement. Several indicators for such threshold-linear interaction are derived and tested on real data obtained in psychophysical experiments. Four healthy subjects performed rapid lateral abductions of the index finger in response to a visual “go” signal. During a portion of the experiments, subjects produced additional low-amplitude oscillatory movements before stimulus presentation with either the same finger (one-handed task), or with the index finger of the other hand (two-handed task). Results showed phase entrainment and modulation of reaction times when the cyclic and the discrete movements were simultaneously executed by the same finger. But there was no entrainment in the bimanual execution of the tasks. The model was capable of reproducing the observed effects. It is concluded that coordination of voluntary movements which are concurrently performed by the same effector involves specific discontinuous operations, which represents an essential part of the mechanism of motor coordination. Phase entrainment reflects this characteristic discontinuous behavior of the lower stages of motor execution and does not necessarily require nonlinear interaction of motor commands at higher levels of motor processing.  The phase-resetting experiment was applied to human periodic finger tapping to understand how its rhythm is controlled by the internal neural clock that is assumed to exist. In the experiment, the right periodic tapping movement was disturbed transiently by a series of left finger taps in response to impulsive auditory cues presented randomly at various phases within the tapping cycle. After each left finger tap, the original periodic tapping was reestablished within several tapping cycles. Influences of the disturbance on the periodic right finger tapping varied depending on the phase of the periodic right finger tapping at which each left finger tap was made. It was confirmed that the periodic tapping was disturbed not by the auditory cues but by the left finger taps. Based on this fact, in this paper each single left tap was considered as the stimulus, and the phase of the periodic tapping of the right index finger when the left tap was executed as the phase of the stimulus. Responses of the neural activities (magnetoencephalography, MEG), the tapping movement, and the corresponding muscle activities (electromyography) were simultaneously measured. Phase-resetting curves (PRCs) representing the degree of phase reset as a function of the phase of the stimulus were obtained both for the left sensorimotor cortex MEG response and for the right index finger tapping response. The shapes of both PRCs were similar, suggesting that the phase reset of the left sensorimotor cortex activities and that of the finger tapping rhythm were the same. Four out of eight subjects showed type-0 reset in Winfree's definition, and the others showed type-1 reset. For general limit-cycle oscillators, type-0 reset is obtained for relatively strong perturbations and type 1 for weak perturbations. It was shown that the transient response of MEG to the single left tap stimuli in type-0 subjects, where the phase was progressively reset, were different from those in type-1 subjects. Based on detailed analysis of the differences, a neural network model for the phase reset of the tapping rhythm is proposed.
