Thirteen serotypes of Salmonella isolated from imported ornamental aquarium frogs, snails, and their waters were shown to be multi-drug-resistant. Among the resistances exhibited were resistance to gentamicin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, cephalothin, and nalidixic acid. Frog isolates displayed eight different patterns and snails isolates had two different resistance patterns. The most common serotype, Salmonella typhimurium, was resistant to 18 antibacterials while other salmonellae were resistant to 9 to 16 antibacterials. Resistances in S. typhimurium and S. bovis-morbificans were conjugative and a number of R plasmids participated in the resistance. The plasmid-mediated resistance in S. typhimurium was stable and the levels of resistance conferred were markedly higher than in the other salmonellae tested. Resistance of other serotypes was non-conjugative and resistance to the beta-lactam antibiotics was unstable.  相似文献

The freshwater aquarium snail (Ampullaria spp.) was demonstrated to carry as many as 10(8) viable mesophilic bacteria per g of meat plus shell. Some 16 genera of bacteria were identified, with gram negatives predominating. Enrichment culture techniques enabled the isolation of salmonellae from 24 to 42 lots of 200 g each. The salmonellae comprised eight different serotypes, including Salmonella newport, Salmonella saint-paul, and Salmonella infantis. This association of salmonellae with snails may contribute to cases of human salmonellosis, since other aquarium species have already been shown to contribute to many such cases. The snails were also found to commonly harbor Pseudomonas aeruginosa and, occasionally, Edwardsiella tarda.  相似文献

At the period of 1980-1982 the isolation of salmonellae belonging to 394 serovars was registered in the USSR. Of these, 116 Salmonella serovars were registered in the USSR for the first time. 12 dominating serovars constituted 83.1% of salmonellae isolated from humans, 99% of salmonellae isolated from animals and 70% of all salmonellae isolated from different environmental objects. S. typhimurium was the predominant serovar, found to determine 50% of cases of Salmonella infection. The isolation rate of S. infantis and S. virchow was shown to increase. The existence of definite ecological relationships between infective agents isolated from different sources was established.  相似文献

A naturally occurring Salmonella mikawasima serologically converted by phage 14 (6,7,14:y:e,n,z15) has been isolated for the first time. An S. tennessee variant seroconverted by phage 14 (6,7,14:z29:-) was also isolated. The source of these salmonellae was the common freshwater aquarium snail Ampullaria. Phage 14 prepared from these serovariants was lytic for S. bovis-morbificans (6,8:r:1,5) and for S. hadar (6,8:z10:e,n,x).  相似文献

A high correlation of the salmonellae and enterococci indices with the distance from the sources of contamination (effluents) at calm weather and reduced correlation at storm was revealed in examination of coastal waters of Baltic sea for salmonellae and indicator microbes in the biotypes of two populated localities. Monotypical character of the isolated salmonellae served as the peculiarity of the results obtained: S. typhimurium prevailed (96.3%): S. give were isolated in 3.7% of the cases. The latter were isolated chiefly in the biotypes of one of the populated localities (B); their relative content showed a sharp elevation during storm.  相似文献

A study made in Taiwan showed that 23.3 per cent of healthy slaughter pigs were infected with salmonellae. Samples of gallbladder wall/liver, mesenteric lymph nodes and jejunum wall were found to yield salmonellae in 16.4, 5.2 and 11.6 per cent of cases respectively. Salmonellae isolated belonged to nine different serotypes, S. london being the serotype most frequently isolated (26.8%) followed by S. anatum, S. panama (16.1% each) and S. typhimurium (12.5%). Of the total number of salmonellae isolated 68.5 per cent were detected simultaneously on brilliant-green phenol-red lactose sucrose agar (BGA) and desoxycholate agar (DCA), whilst 18.5 per cent were detected only on DCA and 13 per cent only on BGA plates.  相似文献

Samples (2208) of food raw materials and products were examined for the presence of salmonellae by use of conventional salmonella detection procedures and the enrichment serology (ES) techniques described by Sperber & Deibel (1969); 348 samples were positive for salmonellae by the conventional procedures. Using the ES technique with a 24 h elective enrichment step, 93–98% of samples positive by the conventional procedures were also positive by the ES technique. Selective enrichment of food samples using tetrathionate broth containing novobiocin, incubated at 41°, led to the best recovery of salmonellae by both the conventional and ES techniques.  相似文献

The incidence and persistence of salmonellae in weather pools on the top of Stone Mountain were investigated with lactose and buffered peptone water used as pre-enrichment broths. A total of 162 samples were collected from 16 weather pools over a 3-month period. The use of buffered peptone water increased the recovery of salmonellae by approximately 25%. The combined use of direct enrichment in tetrathionate broth containing brilliant green dye and pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water followed by enrichment in tetrathionate broth made it possible to detect all 37 of the contaminated samples. All of the isolates were Salmonella bareilly, the only serotype recovered in a previous study. All but one of the isolations were made from moist or wet samples. S. bareilly was isolated from rabbit dung and litter collected near the weather pools, but attempts to trap rabbits for study were unsuccessful. Random samples taken along a side of the mountain yielded S. bareilly in weather pools within the upper third of the mountain; below this level, S. weslaco and S. memphis were recovered, but not S. bareilly.  相似文献

Four hundred and twenty pork carcasses from four abattoirs were examined for the presence of salmonellae by use of swabbing-enrichment techniques and contact plate methods. Carcasses from only one abattoir were found to be contaminated by swabbing-enrichment (23.3%) and contact plate (17.9%) methods. The area of the skin side of the ham, near the anal opening, was determined to be the area to examine for isolating salmonellae from pork carcasses with the greatest frequency. The most frequently isolated species of salmonellae in this study were Salmonella derby, S. anatum, S. typhimurium, and S. indiana.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that Menhaden fish meal, a common ingredient of animal feeds, is frequently contaminated with salmonellae. Animals that eat contaminated feed may become infected. If they, in turn, are eaten by humans, they may be a means by which salmonellae are introduced into the human population. Epidemiological studies of the fish-meal industry were carried out to determine the sources of salmonellae in fish meal and the factors affecting the persistence and survival of salmonellae during the processing of fish meal. Examination of 190 fish immediately after they came from the Gulf of Mexico revealed no salmonellae, but salmonellae were frequently isolated from samples of fish taken from the boats when they arrived at the plants. Salmonellae were also frequently isolated from dockside water at each of the plants. Approximately 50% of the samples taken in the raw fish processing areas were contaminated with salmonellae. The percentage of samples yielding salmonellae decreased progressively through the various sequences of processing, but more than 15% of the samples taken from the finished products were also positive. Salmonellae were isolated from the raw area of the plant most frequently while the plant was operating and less frequently when the plant was idle, whereas in the processing area of the plant the reverse was true. Salmonellae appeared to survive and multiply in the processing area of the plant while the plant was idle, which resulted in contamination of the first portion of each day's production. Salmonellae in the processed fish meal were reduced to nondetectable levels by reprocessing the first 45 min of each day's production.  相似文献

Samples of protein feed supplements produced by rendering plants were examined for salmonellae, total aerobic bacterial counts, coliform counts, and enterococci. Isolations of salmonellae were more frequent from products with high counts; however, 6% of the samples with total counts of less than 1,000 per gram and 14% of the samples with coliform counts of less than 1 per gram contained salmonellae. Serotypes of Escherichia coli which have been associated with disease in domestic animals and poultry were also isolated from products. Although the distribution of serotypes of salmonellae isolated from environmental swabs and flies was similar to that isolated from products, the isolation of several serotypes from flies which had not been isolated in plants suggested that flies may be a potential source of contamination.  相似文献

Low numbers of salmonellae have been detected and enumerated from environmental samples by most-probable-number methods which require careful colony selection from a plated agar medium. A modified xylose lysine brilliant green medium was prepared to control the loss of selectivity caused by heating the brilliant green component. Added agar reduced colony spreading. The medium contained 47 g of xylose lysine agar base per liter; the agar content was adjusted to 2%, autoclaved, cooled to 50 degrees C, and then amended just before pouring to include H2S indicator and 7 ppm (7 ml of 1:1,000 brilliant green per liter) of unheated brilliant green dye. H2S-positive salmonellae were easily detected from sewage sludge compost to the exclusion of most other gram-negative bacteria. As a result, fewer non-salmonellae were picked for further most-probable-number analysis, greatly reducing the work load associated with the most-probable-number method. Direct plating was possible for enumerating salmonellae in laboratory composts containing ca. 10(3) or more salmonellae.  相似文献

The evolutionary relationships of pond frogs distributed in the Far East and Europe were investigated by analyses of nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA (12S rRNA) and cytochrome b (cyt b) genes. The nucleotide sequences of a 412-bp segment of the 12S rRNA gene and a 534-bp segment of the cyt b gene were determined by the PCR-direct sequencing method using 19 frogs belonging to six species and one subspecies distributed in the Palearctic region. Phylogenetic trees were constructed by the neighbor-joining and maximum-likelihood methods using Rana catesbeiana or Xenopus laevis as an outgroup. The 412-bp segment of the 12S rRNA gene contained 65 variable sites including gap sites, and the 534-bp segment of the cyt b gene contained 160 variable sites. The nucleotide sequence divergences of the 12S rRNA gene were 0.25-4.83% within the Far Eastern frogs, 0.25-6.22% within the European frogs, and 8.74-11.24% between the Far Eastern and the European frogs, whereas those of the cyt b gene were 3.64-14.73% within the Far Eastern frogs, 0.38-14.42% within the European frogs, and 16.53-23.58% between the Far Eastern and the European frogs. Although most nucleotide substitutions were at the third codon position of the cyt b gene and were silent mutations, 4 amino acid replacements occurred within the Far Eastern frogs, 4 within the European frogs, and 11 between the Far Eastern and the European frogs. The phylogenetic trees constructed from the nucleotide sequence divergences showed slightly different topologies for the 12S rRNA and cyt b genes. R. esculenta from Ukraine was closely related to R. lessonae from Luxembourg in both the 12S rRNA and the cyt b gene sequences.  相似文献

At the time of manufacture, 75% of 67 sets of finished fresh pork sausage collected in 44 plants had aerobic plate counts in the range of 500,000 or fewer/g; 88% contained 100 or fewer E. coli/g; and 75% contained 100 or fewer S. aureus/g (geometric means of 10 samples). Salmonellae were isolated from 28% of 529 samples of pork trimmings used for sausage, and from 28% of 560 finished sausage samples. Semiquantitative analysis revealed that salmonellae were at low levels; more than 80% of the salmonellae-positive samples were positive only in 25-g portions (negative in 1.0- and 0.1-g portions).  相似文献

Two methods for the detection of salmonellae in foods were compared in 179 imported meat and egg samples. The number of positive samples and replications, and the number of strains and kinds of serotypes were statistically comparable by both the direct enrichment method of the Food Hygiene Laboratory in England, and the pre-enrichment method devised for processed foods in the United States. Boneless frozen beef, veal, and horsemeat imported from five countries for consumption in England were found to have salmonellae present in 48 of 116 (41%) samples. Dried egg products imported from three countries were observed to have salmonellae in 10 of 63 (16%) samples. The high incidence of salmonellae isolated from imported foods illustrated the existence of an international health hazard resulting from the continuous introduction of exogenous strains of pathogenic microorganisms on a large scale.  相似文献

Ornamental fishes are among the most popular and fastest growing categories of pets in the United States (U.S.). The global scope and scale of the ornamental fish trade and growing popularity of pet fish in the U.S. are strong indicators of the myriad economic and social benefits the pet industry provides. Relatively little is known about the microbial communities associated with these ornamental fishes or the aquarium water in which they are transported and housed. Using conventional molecular approaches and next generation high-throughput amplicon sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA gene hypervariable regions, we characterized the bacterial community of aquarium water containing common goldfish (Carassius auratus) and Chinese algae eaters (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) purchased from seven pet/aquarium shops in Rhode Island and identified the presence of potential pathogens. Our survey identified a total of 30 phyla, the most common being Proteobacteria (52%), Bacteroidetes (18%) and Planctomycetes (6%), with the top four phyla representing >80% of all sequences. Sequences from our water samples were most closely related to eleven bacterial species that have the potential to cause disease in fishes, humans and other species: Coxiella burnetii, Flavobacterium columnare, Legionella birminghamensis, L. pneumophila, Vibrio cholerae, V. mimicus. V. vulnificus, Aeromonas schubertii, A. veronii, A. hydrophila and Plesiomonas shigelloides. Our results, combined with evidence from the literature, suggest aquarium tank water harboring ornamental fish are an understudied source for novel microbial communities and pathogens that pose potential risks to the pet industry, fishes in trade, humans and other species.  相似文献

S ummary : The direct and indirect fluorescent antibody technique (FAT) were compared with cultural methods for detecting salmonellae in meat products, animal feedingstuffs, poultry carcase swabs, giblets and poultry plant and equipment swabs. Salmonellae were not isolated from meat products and fluorescent cells were not seen on slides prepared by either FAT. The indirect and direct FAT recorded 13% and 9% respectively, false positive results, with samples of animal feedingstuffs, but the direct FAT recorded a single false negative result. Salmonellae were not isolated from poultry carcase swabs but 3% and 4·5% respectively, of false positive results were obtained with the indirect and direct FAT. Salmonellae were isolated from both giblet samples and poultry plant swabs and both gave rise to false negative FAT results. Preliminary studies of the efficacy of the FAT for screening animal faecal material for salmonellae indicated that no single combination of enrichment broth and FAT gives unequivocal results, but the staining of smears from tetrathionate broth by either FAT gives rise to a high percentage of false negative results.  相似文献

The reliability of the enrichment serology (ES), fluorescent antibody (FA), and a combination of the FA and ES procedures for the detection of salmonellae were compared to the Salmonella cultural procedure outlined in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM). A total of 126 subsamples from 22 different products were analyzed. By utilizing the BAM procedure as the reference standard, a total of 66 samples were positive for salmonellae. Within 44 h approximately 65% of the Salmonella-negative samples could be cleared by the FA test. At the end of 50 h 97% of the Salmonella-negative samples could be cleared by the combination FA-ES test. The FA procedure detected all 66 BAM positives but exhibited a high incidence of presumptive positives which were cultural negatives. The ES procedure detected 64 of the 66 BAM positives but exhibited a low incidence of presumptive positives which were cultural negatives. Incorporating positive FA and positive ES results in a combination FA-ES technique revealed that FA-ES positives were statistically equivalent to BAM positives.  相似文献
