Summary The flight patterns of twenty species of butterflies present in two coniferous woods and one coppiced wood in eastern England were recorded from April to September 1979. The most mobile species were those characteristic of disturbed habitats, with spatially segregated larval and adult habitats, and those butterflies with early successional larval host plants. The least mobile species were those of permanent habitats and those with ubiquitous larval host plants. Flights of poorly vagile species, but not vagile species, were restricted in both coniferous and coppiced woodland, but were shorter in the latter due to the presence of vegetational barriers to flight. Vagile species remained in coppiced areas longer than in areas of coniferous woodland, flights being influenced by the location of larval and adult food resources.  相似文献

A study over 4 years into the number of breeding bird species and species turnover (extinctions and colonisations) in relation to area was conducted in 35 woodlands, set in an intensively farmed landscape, in north-east Essex, UK. A total of 46 species was recorded. The number of species breeding increased with woodland area; the slope of the species–area relationship did not differ between years. Habitat diversity was the only other measured variable to influence species richness. Absolute species turnover was independent of woodland area but relative turnover declined with increase in woodland area. The numbers of territories of nine species were determined. For four summer visitors the number of woods occupied increased as the overall populations increased but, for the other species, changes in overall population size led to changes in numbers in occupied woods. Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs and Song Thrush Turdus philomelos were more associated with woodland edges, Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos, Garden Warbler Sylvia borin, Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita and Willow Warbler P. trochilus with interiors. Several species showed an inverse relationship between population density and woodland area. Collections of small woods hold similar species richness to single large woods. While the acquisition of large woods for conservation purposes should be a priority, the extension of smaller woods to a size of about 10 ha would be highly beneficial to both the species richness and population stability of regional woodland bird assemblages.  相似文献

Bird species-richness and densities were studied in spring and autumn of 1991 and 1992 in dry forest and oak woodland in western Mexico. Classification of the vegetation resulted in the identification of six dry forest types: from thorn forests, dominated by Acacia , through broad-leaved tree forest (typical dry forest of western Mexico) and small-leaved tree forest to Ipomoea forest. Oak woodland and mixed woodland, which are a transition between dry forest and the more mesic oak woodland, formed two further forest types. In the study area as a whole, bird densities were higher in autumn, following the rainy season, than in spring, which is the dry season, and the beginning of the breeding season. Densities in the two autumns were very similar (mean 93 ± 7.8 birds per 2.8 ha) but differed significantly between spring 1991 (57 ± 2.2 per 2.8 ha) and spring 1992 (70 ± 3.2 per 2.8 ha), possibly due to unseasonal rain in 1992. In autumn, bird densities were highest in thorn forests and lowest in broad-leaved tree forests and oak woodland. In spring 1991, bird densities were highest in Prosopis thorn forest and mixed woodland, and lowest in oak woodland. Bird species-richness was low in oak woodland, in both seasons, and high in mixed woodland and Ipomoea forest in spring. Bird species composition between forest types was more similar in the spring than autumn. The spring similarity in species composition is explained by the presence of generalist species in times of food scarcity during the dry season, and by the homogeneity of the predominantly leafless vegetation. Comparison with the bird species composition of a dry forest in Venezuela and the Pacific coast of Mexico indicates that the sites in the present study have an intermediate number of species. Although the present study recorded a smaller number of bird species than on the Pacific coast, 16 were different, expanding the total for Mexican dry forest by 14% from 118 to 134.  相似文献

Bird species turnover and stochastic extinction in woodland fragments   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Year-to-year turnover in bird species composition was recorded across, the whole size range (0 02-30 ha) of 146 woods studied The mean number of resident breeding species both lost and gained per wood between consecutive breeding seasons was 2 (range 0-8) No relationship was found between this absolute turnover rate and woodland area, or any other of 24 predictor variables (describing woodland structure, isolation, connectedness and surrounding land use) Extriction and colonisation rates (in terms of numbers of species lost and gained) were also unrelated to woodland area In all sizes of woods, the species most likely to show local extinctions and colonisations were those with small populations within those woods, but the identity of the species concerned changed as woodland area increased In the smallest woods, the majority of turnover involved common species, such as wren and dunnock, which occurred in only small numbers in these small woods As woodland area increased, these species attained sufficient numbers to usually avoid stochastic extinction The majority of turnover was then due to more specialist (and less numerous) woodland species, such as great-spotted woodpecker and marsh tit, which were usually lacking in small woods In Britain, much existing broadleaved woodland falls within the size range studied Thus the numbers of many bird species are liable to be small enough for yearly turnover in woodland bird communities to be appreciable, and for the long-term persistence of individual species in particular woods to depend on dispersal  相似文献

A study was conducted in and around the Aokigahara primary woodland of Mount Fuji, central Japan, to clarify butterfly community structure along the environmental gradients of human disturbance, shade, and plant species richness, with a view to formulating conservation strategies for the community. The composition and abundance of butterfly species were recorded during 1999 along transects in three habitats: woodland, woodland edge and open land. Two sites were selected for each habitat. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that community structure was correlated with both disturbance and shade. However, neither relationship was significant when disturbance and shade were analyzed as covariables (partial CCA), suggesting that the combined effect of the two variables played an important role in determining community structure. In contrast, CCA showed no significant relationships between butterfly community structure and plant or hostplant species richness. Correlation analyses between species characteristics and the CCA scores showed that species occurring in more disturbed habitats were more voltine, had a wider hostplant range and were associated with lower shade tolerance than those occurring in less disturbed habitats, and species occurring in darker habitats with higher shade tolerance. Generally, the structure and characteristics of the butterfly community could be understood well in terms of the habitat templet theory. To conserve endangered species on the Red List of Japan, and to maintain butterfly diversity in and around the woodland, this study suggests a need not only to conserve the primary woodland area, but most importantly to maintain the surrounding forest edge including areas of semi-natural grassland.  相似文献

Abstract. A floristic and environmental survey was carried out on 22 uninhabited islands (0.1‐8.4 ha) in Lake Burollos, Egypt. A total of 58 vascular plant species was recorded. The number of habitats on each island was counted. There was a positive correlation between island area and number of habitat types. Island area was significantly positively correlated with various measures of floristic diversity, including the total number of species present, and the numbers of annual, herbaceous, and shrublet species. Perennial and shrub species numbers did not differ significantly with island area. In addition to island area, elevation and soil salinity, as well as distance to the Mediterranean Sea, all contributed significantly to variation in species composition in the terrestrial habitats. Water salinity and transparency accounted for 69% of the variation in aquatic species numbers. There was a weak effect of isolation on similarity of species composition on islands. Eight vegetation types, represented by 13 indicator species identified after TWINSPAN analysis, were distinguished by soil characteristics. Species richness was inversely correlated with clay, organic carbon and total nitrogen in the soil, but positively correlated with calcium carbonate content. From a management perspective, long‐term monitoring of threatened habitats in the lake is urgently required as a starting point to preserve biodiversity. Finally, we conclude that the present study supports the hypothesis indicating that larger areas feature higher species richness due to increased numbers of habitats.  相似文献

The breeding avifauna of 25 woodland fragments (0.85–280 ha) was studied between 1996 and 2004 in Córdoba, Argentina. A distinctive feature of the avifauna of the fragments studied is the low area requirement of most of the species. Of the 54 woodland species recorded, 32 (59.3%) require c . 1 ha and 43 (79.6%) needed no more than 3 ha. Also noticeable is the relatively high number of individuals of most of the species. Both characteristics suggest a good tolerance to fragmentation. However, nine species (16.7%), the area-sensitive species, need fragments of 80 ha or larger. Moreover, eight resident species have apparently become extinct in the fragments that were studied, including the five large species that originally inhabited the area. Proportional odds and log linear models were fitted to relate the minimum area requirements of these species to various ecological characteristics (body size, diet, habitat use, migratory status, and nest type). Closed nesters, resident, woodland exterior, and medium-size species were the groups requiring larger areas. No apparent pattern was observed between area requirements and diet. A recent law prohibits woodland removal, which is a positive step towards the conservation of the fragments. The results suggest that as long as the present amount of woodland is maintained, the situation of the avifauna of the fragments is relatively secure, at least in the short term.  相似文献

All Swedish forest land is at present being surveyed with the aim of mapping woodland key habitats which have an estimated number of ca. 70 000. An untested requirement of these habitats is that they should contain red-listed species. In order to investigate if they fulfill their aim, an inventory of nationally red-listed bryophytes and lichens was performed in ca. 120 randomly selected woodland key habitats distributed throughout the country. The species were recorded in line transects, covering the whole surface of the habitats. The mean number of red-listed species per habitat was 0.7 for bryophytes and 1.4 for lichens with 11 species at the richest site and 71% of the sites having at least one species. Nemoral forests and coniferous forests were the most species-rich habitat types. The habitats of northern Sweden were more species rich than the southern ones. There were weak correlations between presence of bryophytes and lichens. The study shows that a majority of the woodland key habitats contain red-listed bryophyte and lichen species. Further studies are needed in order to record more organism groups and to compare the woodland key habitats with the surrounding matrix forests.  相似文献

Land-use intensification in Mediterranean agro-forest systems became a pressure on biodiversity, concerning particularly the woodland sensitive species. In 2001, the effects of a land-use gradient from old-growth cork-oak forest to a homogeneous agricultural area were assessed using rove beetles as indicators in a Mediterranean landscape. The aim was to find which species were negatively affected by land-use intensification at the landscape level and whether they benefited from cork-oak patches occurring along the land-use gradient. A total of 3,196 rove beetles from 88 taxa were sampled from all landscape types. Agricultural area recorded significantly higher numbers of abundance and species richness in relation to the cork-oak mosaics, i.e. the old-growth forest and the managed agro-forest landscapes (montados). Moreover, 70% of rove beetle indicator species common enough to be tested by IndVal displayed their highest indicator value for agriculture, showing a lower number of woodland indicators in comparison to ground beetles. Nevertheless, one rove beetle taxon was considered a specialist of closed woodland mosaics while no specialist ground beetle was found for that landscape typology. Some rare rove beetle species were also important in typifying diversity patterns of old-growth cork-oak forests. Hence, future management in Mediterranean landscapes should take into account not only indicator species common enough to be tested by IndVal, but also rare and endemic species. Considering the added value of cork-oak woodland cover for sensitive rove and ground beetle diversity, the strengthening of cork-oak woodland connectivity seems to be a crucial management that is required in agricultural Mediterranean landscapes.  相似文献

In north-west Germany the ground beetle fauna was investigated using pitfall traps at 79 sampling sites in ancient woodlands and recent woodlands (with and without direct contact to old stands). Two woodland types were considered: The Quercion robori-petraea-woodlands (oak-beech-type) on mainly sandy soils and the Stellario-Carpinetum-woodlands (hornbeam-type) on mainly loamy soils. The number of recorded ground beetle species inhabiting exclusively or predominantly woodlands in the investigation area is significantly higher in ancient stands of both woodland types than in recent ones. No statistically substantiated relation between habitat size (both about 1800 and in 1990) and the number of characteristic woodland ground beetle species could be ascertained. Carabus glabratus and Abax parallelus show a distinct focus in ancient woodlands. Significantly more records of Carabus violaceus and Abax parallelepipedus are known from ancient woodlands than from recent ones. Twelve of the 16 ground beetle species, for which no difference in the colonisation of ancient and recent woodlands was ascertained, are macropterous. Half of the eight brachypterous woodland species is exclusively or predominantly found in ancient woodlands, suggesting that power of dispersal is an important factor which determines the species number in woodland fragments of different age.  相似文献

Historic maps show that the Central European landscape was influenced by exploitive human land-use during the middle ages and in the following centuries. A mixture of ancient woodlands, which survived the period of woodland destruction, and recent woodlands, which were established after 1800, cover about 10% of the study area in NW Germany today. Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) of the subfamily Cryptorhynchinae with the genera Acalles, Kyklioacalles, Ruteria and of the subfamily Molytinae, tribe Acicnemidini with the genus Trachodes are all flightless and possibly influenced by landscape history. The aims of this investigation are (1) to examine the spatial distribution of flightless saproxylic weevils in ancient and recent woodlands in NW Germany and (2) to test the frequency of possible relict species in relation to historical and current woodland size. Based on a field study in 29 deciduous woodlands and species records in collections and literature, six flightless saproxylic weevils were found to be associated with ancient woodlands in NW Germany. None of these were recorded in any of the 14 recent woodlands studied. The frequency of these relict species is correlated with historical, but not with current, woodland size. Distribution maps for Lower Saxony and data on the phenology of the relict species are presented. These weevils are relict species of ancient woodland, because they were unable to colonise isolated woods that were established after 1800. All of them are dependent on dead or dying wood for larval development. The results show that ancient broadleaved woodlands with long-lasting habitat continuity are of high conservation value for invertebrate species such as saproxylic weevils.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in numbers and body condition of honeyeaters were examined over 2 years in the New England National Park, New South Wales, Australia. Nectar availability measured as inflorescence density and nectar production were also recorded. In the main study site, the abundance of six of the seven most common species of honeyeater was significantly correlated with inflorescence density. However, honeyeater numbers were not significantly correlated with daily energy productivity. Unlike most honeyeater communities, the New England community was dominated numerically by the Eastern Spinebill, the smallest of the most common species present. Among the most common species, the duration of time a species was recorded in the area was negatively, but not significantly, correlated with its size. All species examined showed similar seasonal changes in body condition, with the highest bodyweights and fat deposits recorded in winter.  相似文献

Pitfall trap sampling of Carabid beetle species on roundabouts in Bracknell, Berkshire, was used to assess the biodiversity of this taxon by its use as an indicator. The aim of the study was to discover the role of traffic islands in the provision of refugia for invertebrate fauna in fragmented urban habitats. Sampling was performed on 15 roundabouts where a total of 24 species were recorded during four trapping periods over a total of 10 days. The resulting asymptotic curves indicated that the total number of species present on all but two of the sites had been represented in the samples taken. There was found to be a positive correlation between the area of the islands and the number of ground beetle species and between the log of the area and the number of individuals found. The log/log relationship between the area of the islands and the number of species was significant. The total abundance of the beetles present was also positively and significantly correlated with roundabout area when both variables were logged. The number of habitats on the islands was positively correlated with the total abundance and species richness. The relationship between species, area and habitat was also positively and significantly correlated. In conclusion, it is obvious that roundabouts of large area with higher numbers of habitat types are greater in Carabid beetle diversity than small, sparsely vegetated roundabouts. Thus, roundabouts can promote the maintenance of biodiversity in fragmented urban habitats. We present this study as an example of a simple method that could be used or easily adapted for educational use, and suggest how some of the perceived problems in its use may be overcome. We discuss how such a study could be useful in illustrating concepts such as biodiversity and species richness, and some of the factors that influence it, as well as demonstrating the level of biodiversity that can be found in urban environments.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a study of wintering bird communities across a wide range of coniferous, broadleaved and mixed forest stands in the Forest of Dean, western England. Bird communities of broadleaved and coniferous woodland differed with respect to their species composition. The mean number of individual birds recorded increased linearly with woodland age and was not influenced by woodland type, stand size or the presence of grazing. Woodland age and type and the presence or absence of grazing all significantly influenced bird species richness and the proportions of the bird community made up by granivores, insectivores and omnivores. Broadleaved stands held more species than coniferous stands. Ungrazed stands held significantly more species, particularly seed-eating species, than grazed stands and this effect was independent of woodland type. Ordination was used to relate variation in tree species composition and stand structure to bird community composition. A larger number of species was associated with broadleaved stands and stands with abundant undergrowth than was associated with coniferous stands or stands with little undergrowth. Woodland age had less effect on bird community composition than the extent of undergrowth and the conifer to broadleaf ratio. The results of this work have relevance to the enhancement of winter bird communities in commercial forests.  相似文献

Urbanization is a process globally responsible for loss of biodiversity and for biological homogenization. Urbanization may have a direct negative impact on species behaviour and indirect effects on species populations through alterations of their habitats, for example patch size and habitat quality. Woodpeckers are species potentially susceptible to urbanization. These birds are mostly forest specialists and the development of urban areas in former forests may be an important factor influencing their richness and abundance, but documented examples are rare. In this study we investigated how woodpeckers responded to changes in forest habitats as a consequence of urbanization, namely size and isolation of habitat patches, and other within-patch characteristics. We selected 42 woodland patches in a gradient from a semi-natural rural landscape to the city centre of Poznań (Western Poland) in spring 2010. Both species richness and abundance of woodpeckers correlated positively to woodland patch area and negatively to increasing urbanization. Abundance of woodpeckers was also positively correlated with shrub cover and percentage of deciduous tree species. Furthermore, species richness and abundance of woodpeckers were highest at moderate values of canopy openness. Ordination analyses confirmed that urbanization level and woodland patch area were variables contributing most to species abundance in the woodpecker community. Similar results were obtained in presence-absence models for particular species. Thus, to sustain woodpecker species within cities it is important to keep woodland patches large, multi-layered and rich in deciduous tree species.  相似文献

Aim We evaluate, for the first time, the decay of similarity over distance in four species of marine fishes with different vagility: Trachurus murphyi (pelagic, highly vagile), Merluccius gayi (demersal, highly vagile), Sebastes capensis (demersal, low vagility) and Hippoglossina macrops (benthic, non‐vagile). Location We use our own data of the species composition of parasite communities in four host species: T. murphyi (Perciformes), M. gayi (Gadiformes), H. macrops (Pleuronectiformes) and S. capensis (Scorpaeniformes), from the coast of Chile and southern Argentina. Trachurus murphyi, M. gayi and H. macrops in the area studied live closely associated with the cold waters of the Humboldt Current System, while S. capensis in southern Chile is associated with the fjord areas south of c. 43° S, and in Argentina this species lives in close association with the cold water of the Malvinas Current, which mixes with the warm water of the Brazilian Current in the sampled area. Thus, for all four host species there are no known geographical (oceanographic) barriers that interrupt their continuous distributions. Methods Fish were collected and frozen (?18 °C) until examination in the laboratory. After thawing, each visceral organ was dissected separately, washed in running water, filtered using a mesh of 0.25 mm, and examined under a stereomicroscope (20×). For S. capensis, only ectoparasites were included in this study because data on endoparasites for some locations are not available. The approach of Poulin [Journal of Biogeography 30 (2003) 1609] was used. For each host species, we computed similarity in parasite composition using the Bray–Curtis distance on a presence/absence matrix. Similarity between each pair of localities was correlated (linear regression on raw and transformed data) with the distance (in nautical miles) among those sites. Results Among conspecific populations of host fish, there was no correlation between sample size and parasite species richness. The same pattern was evident when all host populations were pooled and treated as a single sample. Except for H. macrops, an important proportion of the geographical ranges of the host species was covered. The decay in similarity of parasite communities over distance was recorded in three of the four hosts analysed. For H. macrops, no relationship between distances and decay of similarity was evident. A linear regression on non‐transformed data provided a good fit, and the regression on log(n + 1) does not change significantly for both r2 and probability, but slopes are smaller for log‐transformed than for non‐transformed data. Main conclusions Three of the four fish parasite systems studied fit well with the expected decay of similarity over distance. The slopes of the relationship between distance and similarity in the marine fishes studied are lower, but significant (three orders of magnitude) than those recorded in freshwater fishes by Poulin (2003) . In our case, Hippoglossina macrops (benthic, non‐vagile host) does not show any relationship, suggesting homogeneity over the geographical area studied for this species.  相似文献

We examined the pattern of species composition of breeding birds along urban-rural gradients in the Osaka Prefecture, western Japan. We recorded the proportion of nine types of land-use and the presence/absence of each of 76 breeding birds in 5 km square quadrats on a map of the Prefecture. The proportion of woodland and farmland which increased from urban to rural areas were two major enviornmental gradients according to Principal Component Analysis of the nine types of land-use. Ordination by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the breeding bird distribution differentiated along the two major clines, woodland and farmland. The avifauna changed successively along these environmental gradients. There were no discrete boundaries of the distribution of bird species groups. We tentatively classified five groups of quadrats on the ordination plane of the sample score. The geographic position of these five groups on a map preserved the environmental gradient, but showed that water (seashore and river) was a stronger influence on bird species composition than land-use pattern. Although the diversity of land-use seemed to raise species richness in the third group, the less diverse, woodland-rich group contained as many species as the third group. Four groups of bird species, and one group in which species occurred in more than 90% of the quadrats, were classified in the CCA-ordination plane. The occurrence of these bird groups correlated with land-use; the first group with woodland area, the second with scatter woodland, the third with farmland and the fourth with seashore.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: Smaller woodlands not only support fewer species but also show different avian community composition due to loss of woodland interior and an increase in edge habitat.

Aims: To use observed community composition changes, rather than traditional total species richness-area relationships, to make area-specific management recommendations for optimizing woodland habitat for avian communities in fragmented landscapes.

Methods: 17 woodlands were selected in Oxfordshire, UK, with areas between 0.2 and 120 ha. Three dawn area searches were conducted in each woodland between 1st April and 28th May 2016 to record encounter rates for each species. The impact of internal habitat variation on woodland comparability was assessed using habitat surveys.

Results: Woodlands with area less than 3.6 ha showed a significant positive relationship between total avian species richness and woodland area. Woodlands with area over 3.6 ha were all consistent with a mean (± se) total richness of 25.4?±?0.6 species, however the number of woodland specialists continued to increase with woodland area. Woodland generalists dominated the total encounter rate across the area range, however the fractional contribution of woodland specialists showed a significant positive correlation with woodland area, while the fractional contribution of non-woodland species significantly decreased. Non-woodland species numbers peaked in mid-sized woodlands with enhanced habitat heterogeneity.

Conclusions: Community composition analysis enabled more targeted recommendations than total species richness analysis, specifically: large woodlands (over 25?ha) in southern UK should focus conservation efforts on providing the specific internal habitats required by woodland specialists; medium-sized woodlands (between approximately 4 and 25?ha) should focus on promoting internal habitat variety, which can benefit both woodland species and non-woodland species of conservation concern in the surrounding landscape; small woodlands (under 4?ha) should focus on providing nesting opportunities for non-woodland species and on improving connectivity to maximize habitat for woodland generalists and facilitate movement of woodland specialists.  相似文献

Micro-Scale Restoration: A 25-Year History of a Southern Illinois Barrens   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We studied vegetation change of a remnant barrens in southern Illinois over twenty‐five years. The study area was periodically burned between 1969 and 1993, but fire was excluded for a 16‐year period (1974–1989). During the study, the barrens supported a mixture of species whose preferred habitats ranged from prairie and open woodlands to closed forest communities. The herbaceous vegetation may be on a trajectory characterized by increasing dominance of woodland species and declining prairie species. Fire management temporarily reversed this trend, but it continued once fire was excluded. Reintroduction of prescribed burning in 1990–1993 altered the vegetation trajectory but not back toward a species composition comparable to that present on the site before cessation of fire management after 1973. Following interruption of prescribed burning, tree basal area more than doubled, and density showed a 67% increase between premanagement conditions in 1968 and 1988. Salix humilis (prairie willow) density had significant negative correlations with tree density and basal area. However, there was no consistency in response of shrub species on the site to the varied site conditions over time. Fire management on the site may not recover the historic barrens that occurred on the site. Nevertheless, consistent fire management will drive vegetation changes toward increasing abundance of prairie and open woodland species that would otherwise be lost without burning.  相似文献

Diversity of ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblages and sub‐assemblages was compared between reafforested woodland, grassland, and intensively cultivated fields at Chongli County in Northern China. An array of eight pitfall traps per plot was used to sample the beetles on four replicate plots for each habitat. Replanted conifer woodland and semi‐natural grassland harbored very similar beetle assemblages. These had significantly lower rarefied species numbers than the distinctly different assemblages recorded in cultivated fields, with differences in alpha diversity being less pronounced for large and predatory species. Carabid activity‐density levels were higher in both woodland and grassland than in fields, with this trend being most pronounced for predatory and large species. To conserve high levels of gamma diversity, it is important to maintain a mosaic of agricultural areas and semi‐natural habitats. The latter also form a potential source for predatory species important in pest control. It appears that woodland‐specific species are rare in the study area, or they have not been able to reach and colonize the newly established woodland sites. It can also be concluded that morphological and ecological traits allow important insights into underlying ecological principles of overall diversity patterns.  相似文献
