Abstract The head and branchial regions of larval and adult lampreys and hagfish were studied histologically in serial sections. The most remarkable feature in these extant agnathans was the occurrence of large blood-sinuses. In larval lampreys, blood-sinuses are well developed in the velum, an organ that functions to introduce water and accompanying food particles from the mouth into the gill and alimentary regions. The sinuses in the velum may act to transduce the force of contraction of velar muscles to the stroke-like movement of the velum; without these sinuses muscular contractions might simply cause the velum to collapse. In adult lampreys, blood-sinuses are well developed in the peribranchial space that surrounds the branchial (gill) sac and is surrounded by the branchial pouch. It is possible that the force of contractions of the branchial-pouch muscles is transduced effectively to the branchial sac via the peribranchial blood-sinus and facilitates the expiration of water through the external gill pores. If the peribranchial sinus were absent, the muscular contraction might deform the branchial sac in an inappropriate manner. In the hagfish, the blood-sinus system is also well developed in the velum and peribranchial space, although the peribranchial sinus lies outside the muscular branchial pouch. In agnathans, the blood-sinus system may function, at least in part, as a kind of hydrostatic skeleton that transduces the force generated by muscular contraction.  相似文献

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is characterized by ear malformations, cervical fistulas, hearing loss, and renal anomalies. It is an autosomal dominant disorder with variable clinical manifestations. The most common features of BOR syndrome are branchial, hearing, and renal anomalies. However, many affected subjects have been observed with branchial-cleft anomalies and hearing loss but without renal anomalies, a condition called "branchio-otic" (BO) syndrome. It is logical to question whether the BOR and BO syndromes are allelic or whether they represent distinct genetic entities. We identified a very large extended family whose members had branchial and hearing anomalies associated with commissural lip pits that segregated in an autosomal dominant fashion. Using a genomewide search strategy, we identified genetic linkage, with a maximum LOD score of 4.81 at recombination fraction 0, between the BO phenotype and polymorphic marker D1S2757 in the genetic region of chromosome 1q31. This is the first report of linkage for a second gene associated with BOR syndrome. The findings have important clinical implications and will provide insight into the genetic basis of BOR syndrome.  相似文献

The embryology, anatomy and pathology of branchial cleft anomalies are discussed and 87 cases reviewed. The most frequent anomaly was branchial cleft cyst, of which there were 77 cases. Treatment in all cases consisted of complete excision. There were five cases of external branchial sinus and five cases of complete branchial fistula. Sinograms were helpful in demonstrating these lesions. Excision presented little difficulty. No proved case of branchiogenic carcinoma has been found in the Toronto General Hospital. Five cases are described in which the original diagnosis was branchiogenic carcinoma—in four of these a primary tumour has already been found. The authors believe that the diagnosis of branchiogenic carcinoma should never be accepted until repeated examinations over a period of at least five years have failed to reveal a primary tumour.  相似文献

The respiratory system of Ocypode cordimanus consists of seven pairs of gills, modified for aerial gas exchange, and a single pair of lungs. Each lung is formed from the inner surface of the branchiostegite and the thoracic wall of the branchial chamber. The branchiostegal surface is increased by a fleshy infolding, the branchiostegal shelf, whilst the surface area of the thoracic lung wall is enhanced by a large flaplike fold. The anatomy of the major sinus systems and the vascular supply to the lungs were investigated. Venous hemolymph is supplied to the lungs potentially from all the major body sinuses. The dorsal, ventral, hepatic, and infrabranchial sinuses are all connected anteriorly to the two eye sinuses which distribute hemolymph to the lungs. Each eye sinus gives off five branches to the branchiostegal lung surface and one to the thoracic lung wall. These afferent vessels are highly branched and interdigitate closely with efferent vessels. The two systems are connected by flat lacunae lying just beneath the respiratory epithelium and these are believed to be the site of gas exchange. The efferent vessels empty into two pulmonary veins on each side, one serving the branchiostegal lung wall and the other the thoracic wall. The two vessels on each side fuse before joining the pericardial cavity as a single trunk on each side.  相似文献

The angioarchitecture of the gills in Myxine glutinosa L. was studied by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts (methylmethacrylate). It was found that the afferent branchial artery may be connected to the sinus peribranchialis by a papilla. The sinus is connected to delicate vessels and sinuses, which are interposed between meridionally arranged radial arteries. These delicate vascular formations continue into the interior of the gill and form a plexus on both poles of the gill folds. Light and scanning electron microscopical studies on the vascular endothelium of the afferent vessels of the gill lamellae reveal rounded endothelial cells, which are characterized by a high content of granula, by long cellular processes and by bridge-formations towards neighbouring cells. Supporting columns within the vascular system of the lamellae were found to be set up by several spirally arranged cells. SEM observations reveal goblet cells and numerous superficial epithelial cells with various numbers of microvilli and microridges forming the epithelial surface of the gill folds.  相似文献

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in neonatal period may cause neurological impairment, epilepsy, and lead to stroke. It is caused primarily by coagulopathy of numerous reasons, occasionally perinatal asphyxia, traumatic delivery and hyperhomocysteinemia. Dandy-Walker malformation is characterized by agenesis or hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. Dandy-Walker malformation, variant, and mega cisterna magna represent a spectrum of developmental anomalies. Insults to developing cerebellar hemispheres and the fourth ventricle are believed to be the cause of malformation. Our patient was born from noncomplicated pregnancy, noncomplicated nontraumatic vaginal delivery at term, excellent Apgar scores, without peculiarities in clinical status. She was brest-fed by the 42nd hour of life when she had rightsided seizures during sleep that repeated for five times in next 24 hours. Brain Ultrasound (US) revealed clot in left lateral ventricle, slight dilatation of left ventricle, both sided periventricular echodensity, ischemia, slight enlargement of forth ventricle and a bit smaller cerebellum. There was no visible flow through left transverse, superior sagittal and straight sinus. Magnetic Resonance (MRI) confirmed the finding and showed thrombosis of left and right transverse venous sinuses and confluence of sinuses. Electroencephalogram (EEG) showed leftsided focal changes. The newborn was treated with phenobarbiton for 8 days and had no convulsions during that period. All coagulation parameters, homocistein, lipoproteins (a) and D-dimers were normal. There were no mutations on FV R506Q, PT 20210A, MTHFR 677C/T. No antiphospholipides were found. Heart US showed no structural anomalies. No other patology or risk factors were present at the time. Before discharge, US showed hydrocephalus. Flow in affected sinuses was visible with color Doppler. MRI showed recanalization of affected sinuses, also hydrocephalus and presentation of Dandy Walker On EEG there was borderline finding. Due to progression of hydrocephalus ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was placed. In age of 1 year EEG was slower for age but without focus. Neurological development was normal for age. The question is whether this child had intrauterine insult and inception of Dandy Walker with further postnatal progress of thrombosis and evolution to full picture of Dandy Walker with hydrocephalus OR thrombosis that led to development of hydrocephalus and Dandy Walker malformation in this child were accidental coexistance.  相似文献

The frontal sinuses of bovid mammals display a great deal of diversity, which has been attributed to both phylogenetic and functional influences. In-depth study of the hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), a large African antelope, reveals a number of previously undescribed details of frontal sinus morphology. In A. buselaphus, the frontal sinuses conform closely to the shape of the frontal bone, filling nearly the entire element. However, the horncores are never extensively pneumatized, contrasting with the condition seen in many other bovids. This evidence is inconsistent with the hypothesis that sinuses are opportunistic pneumatizing agents, suggesting that phylogenetic factors also play a role in determining sinus size. Both cranial sutures and neurovasculature appear to constrain the growth of sinuses in part. In turn, the sinus also affects the growth of the parietal; apparently this element is not truly pneumatized by the sinus in most cases, but the bone's shape changes under the influence of the sinus. Furthermore, the sinuses present relatively few struts when compared with the sinuses of some other bovids, such as Ovis. By adapting methods previously developed for measuring structural parameters of trabecular bone, it is possible to quantify certain aspects of sinus morphology. These include the number of bony struts within the sinus, the spacing of these struts, and the size of individual cavities within the sinus. Some differences in the number of struts are evident between subspecies. Similarly, significant differences occur in the relative number of struts between male and female A. buselaphus, which may be related to behavior. The volume of the sinus is strongly correlated with the size of the frontal, but less so with overall cranial size. This finding illustrates the importance of choosing variables carefully when comparing sinus sizes and growth between species.  相似文献

Branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by variable clinical manifestations including branchial fistulae, preauricular pits, ear malformations, hearing impairment, and renal anomalies. BOR is caused by mutations in the genes EYA1 and SIX1. A Danish BOR family with five affected individuals in three generations was analyzed for mutations in all 17 exons of EYA1 using direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified genomic DNA. A novel splice-site mutation (IVS9+1 G>C) was detected in all affected family members but not in unaffected family members or in 96 controls. We conclude that this mutation is causing BOR in the family, most likely as a result of haploinsufficiency or an abnormal protein product caused by aberrant splicing of EYA1 mRNA.  相似文献

Coronary artery anomalies and aortic valve morphology in the Syrian hamster   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In the Syrian hamster, anomalies in the origin of the left coronary artery are significantly associated with the bicuspid condition of the aortic valve. In this species, bicuspid aortic valves are expressions of a trait, the variation of which takes the form of a phenotypic continuum, ranging from a tricuspid aortic valve with no commissural fusion to a bicuspid aortic valve with the aortic sinuses located in ventrodorsal orientation and devoid of any raphe. The intermediate stages of the continuum are represented by tricuspid aortic valves with a more or less extensive fusion of the ventral commissure and bicuspid aortic valves with a more or less developed raphe located in the ventral aortic sinus. The present study was designed to decide whether there is a gap between tricuspid and bicuspid aortic valves regarding the incidence of coronary artery anomalies, or whether this incidence varies according to the different tricuspid and bicuspid morphotypes of the continuum. The study was carried out in Syrian hamsters belonging to a single inbred family with a high incidence of tricuspid aortic valves with fusion of the ventral commissure, bicuspid aortic valves, and anomalies in the origin of the left coronary artery, i.e. single right coronary artery ostium in aorta, anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery, and anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the dorsal aortic sinus. The specimens were examined by means of a stereomicroscope and, in several cases, scanning electron microscopy was also used. The relationships between anomalous coronary artery patterns and aortic valve morphologies were tested using a logistic regression model. The results obtained indicate that there is no discontinuity between tricuspid and bicuspid aortic valves regarding the incidence of coronary artery anomalies. The probability of occurrence of anomalous coronary artery patterns increases continuously according to the deviation degree of the aortic valve from its normal (tricuspid) design. The present findings suggest that in the Syrian hamster, the morphogenetic mechanisms involved in the formation of congenital anomalous aortic valves and anomalies in the origin of the left coronary artery, respectively, are strongly related from an aetiological viewpoint.  相似文献

The highly terrestrial grapsids and gecarcinids and the amphibious sundathelphusids all have large, expanded branchial chambers. The lining of the branchial chambers is smooth and well vascularized, and it functions as a lung. The respiratory membrane and the cuticle lining the lung are extremely thin (200–350 nm). The blood vessels within the lung are formed from connective tissue cells supported by collagen fibres and lined by a basal lamina. The major vessels in the lung are embedded deep in the branchiostegite and lie just beneath the thick outer carapace. These vessels branch towards the respiratory membrane, where they eventually lose their connective tissue coverings to form thin, flattened lacunae directly below the respiratory epithelium. The lacunae (exchange sites) are bordered by specialized connective tissue cells, which either bear microvilli on their apical surface (fimbriated cells) or are very smooth. The respiratory circulation in the lung is very complex, with two portal systems present between the afferent and efferent systems, producing a total of three lacunal exchange beds. Portal systems increase the surface area available for gas exchange. The major distributing vessel in the lung is the branchiostegal vein, which runs along the inner margin of the branchiostegite. The main venous supplies come anteriorly from the infraorbital and ventral sinuses and posteriorly from the procardial sinus. The main collecting vessel is the pulmonary vein, which arises anteriorly and which runs around the ventral perimeter of the branchiostegite before emptying into the pericardial sinus. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Modern crocodylians, including Alligator mississippiensis, have a greatly elaborated system of pneumatic sinuses invading the cranium. These sinuses invade nearly all the bones of the chondrocranium and several bony elements of the splanchnocranium, but patterns of postnatal paratympanic sinus development are poorly understood and documented. Much of crocodylomorph—indeed archosaurian—evolution is characterized by the evolution of various paratympanic air sinuses, the homologies of which are poorly understood due in large part to the fact that individual sinuses tend to become confluent in adults, obscuring underlying patterns. This study seeks to explore the ontogeny of these sinuses primarily to clarify the anatomical relations of the individual sinuses before they become confluent and thus to provide the foundation for later studies testing hypotheses of homology across extant and extinct Archosauria. Ontogeny was assessed using computed tomography in a sample of 13 specimens covering an almost 19-fold increase in head size. The paratympanic sinus system comprises two major inflations of evaginated pharyngeal epithelium: the pharyngotympanic sinus, which communicates with the pharynx via the lateral (true) Eustachian tubes and forms the cavum tympanicum proprium, and the median pharyngeal sinus, which communicates with the pharynx via the median pharyngeal tube. Each of these primary inflations gives rise to a number of secondary inflations that further invade the bones of the skull. The primary sinuses and secondary diverticula are well developed in perinatal individuals of Alligator, but during ontogeny the number and relative volumes of the secondary diverticula are reduced. In addition to describing the morphological ontogeny of this sinus system, we provide some preliminary exploratory analyses of sinus function and allometry, rejecting the hypothesis that changes in the volume of the paratympanic sinuses are simply an allometric function of braincase volume, but instead support the hypothesis that these changes may be a function of the acoustic properties of the middle ear.  相似文献

Many mammal skulls contain air spaces inside the bones surrounding the nasal chamber including the frontal, maxilla, ethmoid, and sphenoid, all of which are called paranasal sinuses. Within the Carnivora, frontal sinuses are usually present, but vary widely in size and shape. The causes of this variation are unclear, although there are some functional associations, such as a correlation between expanded frontal sinuses and a durophagous diet in some species (e.g., hyenas) or between absent sinuses and semiaquatic lifestyle (e.g., pinnipeds). To better understand disparity in frontal sinus morphology within Carnivora, we quantified frontal sinus size in relationship to skull size and shape in 23 species within Arctoidea, a clade that is ecologically diverse including three independent invasions of aquatic habitats, by bears, otters, and pinnipeds, respectively. Our sampled species range in behavior from terrestrial (rarely or never forage in water), to semiterrestrial (forage in water and on land), to semiaquatic (forage only in water). Results show that sinuses are either lost or reduced in both semiterrestrial and semiaquatic species, and that sinus size is related to skull size and shape. Among terrestrial species, frontal sinus size was positively allometric overall, but several terrestrial species completely lacked sinuses, including two fossorial badgers, the kinkajou (a nocturnal, arboreal frugivore), and several species with small body size, indicating that factors other than aquatic habits, such as space limitations due to constraints on skull size and shape, can limit sinus size and presence. Summary A casting technique has been employed to display in three dimensions, the lymphatic microcirculation within the human lymph node. The casting compound filled the marginal sinus, and diffusely permeated the cortical lymphoid parenchyma. However, deep within the lymph node in the medullary region, the medium remained within the limits of the sinus walls. The casts showed well-defined channels appearing similar to vessels. These converged into larger vessels, which drained into efferent lymphatics leaving the node at the hilus.Electron microscopic examination showed that the outer wall of the marginal sinus and the trabecular side of trabecular sinuses had an intact, continuous endothelium with a basement membrane. However, gaps were present in the inner wall of the marginal sinus, as well as in the parenchymal wall of the trabecular sinus. In the medulla, the sinuses were lined by endothelial cells which appeared similar to macrophages. The sinus lining was incomplete and possessed numerous perforations. These observations indicated that sinus walls adjacent to connective tissue served as a barrier to cell movement, but those adjacent to a large lymphoid cell population had gaps, with cells in apparent transit between sinus lumen and parenchyma.  相似文献

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a disease that results from hypersensitivity reaction of the host against fungi colonizing the paranasal sinuses. A 36 years old Spanish man with no history of travel abroad had a history of asthma, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis and a chronic sinusitis with nasal congestion and headaches. Computed tomography showed pansinusitis and opacification of the paranasal sinuses. A pure culture of Bipolaris australiensis was grown from sinus tissues. Infections caused by Bipolaris spp. and treatment regimes are discussed.  相似文献

The lymphatic sinuses in human lymph nodes (LNs) are crucial to LN function yet their structure remains poorly defined. Much of our current knowledge of lymphatic sinuses derives from rodent models, however human LNs differ substantially in their sinus structure, most notably due to the presence of trabeculae and trabecular lymphatic sinuses that rodent LNs lack. Lymphatic sinuses are bounded and traversed by lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs). A better understanding of LECs in human LNs is likely to improve our understanding of the regulation of cell trafficking within LNs, now an important therapeutic target, as well as disease processes that involve lymphatic sinuses. We therefore sought to map all the LECs within human LNs using multicolor immunofluorescence microscopy to visualize the distribution of a range of putative markers. PROX1 was the only marker that uniquely identified the LECs lining and traversing all the sinuses in human LNs. In contrast, LYVE1 and STAB2 were only expressed by LECs in the paracortical and medullary sinuses in the vast majority of LNs studied, whilst the subcapsular and trabecular sinuses lacked these molecules. These data highlight the existence of at least two distinctive populations of LECs within human LNs. Of the other LEC markers, we confirmed VEGFR3 was not specific for LECs, and CD144 and CD31 stained both LECs and blood vascular endothelial cells (BECs); in contrast, CD59 and CD105 stained BECs but not LECs. We also showed that antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the sinuses could be clearly distinguished from LECs by their expression of CD169, and their lack of expression of PROX1 and STAB2, or endothelial markers such as CD144. However, both LECs and sinus APCs were stained with DCN46, an antibody commonly used to detect CD209.  相似文献

According to published accounts, an enlarged occipital-marginal sinus system is absent in Australopithecus africanus, although it occurs in high frequencies in A. robustus, A. Boisei, and Hadar hominids commonly designated A. afarensis. In this report, we describe, for the first time, an enlarged occipital-marginal sinus system on the endocranial cast of the Taung specimen, which is part of the holotype of A. africanus. In addition, well-developed right transverse and sigmoid sinuses are represented on the Taung endocast. The various components of the dual venous sinus system on the Taung endocast are measured, and the system is compared to those of other fossil hominids. The compresence of a lateral sinus system and enlarged occipital and marginal sinuses occurs in two Hadar specimens, 2 specimens of A. robustus crassidens, 1 A. boisei specimen, and several early H. sapiens crania. Hence, the presence of strong transverse sinus impressions in a fragmentary specimen may not be interpreted as an indication that an enlarged occipital-marginal sinus system was not present in the original specimen. Conversely, lack of transverse sinus grooves in a fragmentary specimen does provide indirect evidence than an enlarged occipital-marginal system would probably have been present in the whole specimen, as in 2 specimens of A. boisei. Including Taung, enlarged occipital and marginal sinuses occur in 1 out of 5, or 20%, of A. africanus specimens. This figure compares well with the range of mean frequencies in modern human cranial series (1.5 to 28%), but is much lower than are the frequencies for A. boisei, A. robustus, and the Hadar hominids.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Background

Transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) is common among patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. No previous studies have reported on double-track sign detected on axial Gd-enhanced T1WI in TSS. This study aimed to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the double-track sign in the detection of TSS.

Methods

We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 383 patients with transverse sinus thrombosis (TST) and 30 patients with normal transverse sinus from 5 participating hospitals in china from January 2008 to June 2014. 167 feasible transverse sinuses included in this study were categorized into TSS (n = 76), transverse sinus occlusion (TSO) (n = 52) and transverse sinus normal (TSN) groups (n = 39) according to imaging diagnosis on digital subtraction angiography (DSA) or magnetic resonance venography (MRV). Double-track sign on axial Gd-enhanced T1WI was compared among the three groups. Sensitivity and specificity of double-track sign in detection of TSS were calculated, with final imaging diagnosis of TSS on DSA or MRV as the reference standard.

Results

Of 383 patients with TST recruited over a 6.5-year period, 128 patients were enrolled in the study, 255 patients were excluded because of insufficient clinical data, imaging finding and delay time, and 30 matched patients with normal transverse sinus were enrolled in the control group. Therefore, double-track sign assessment was conducted in 167 available transverse sinuses of 158 patients. Of the 76 sinuses in TSS group, 51 had double-track sign. Of the other 91 sinuses in TSO and TSN groups, 3 had a false-positive double-track sign. Thus, double-track sign on axial Gd-enhanced T1WI was 67.1% (95% CI 55.3–77.2) sensitive and 96.7% (95% CI 89.9–99.1) specific for detection of TSS.

Conclusions

The double-track sign on axial Gd-enhanced T1WI is highly specific and moderate sensitive for detection of TSS. Nevertheless, it could be a direct sign and might provide an early clue for TSS.  相似文献
