Impact of different levels of elevated CO 2 on the activity of Frankia (Nitrogen-fixing actinomycete) in Casuarina equisetifolia rooted stem cuttings has been studied to understand the relationship between C. equisetifolia, Frankia and CO2. The stem cuttings of C. equietifolia were collected and treated with 2000 ppm of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) for rooting. Thus vegetative propagated rooted stem cuttings of C. equisetifolia were inoculated with Frankia and placed in the Open top chambers (OTC) with elevated CO2 facilities. These planting stocks were maintained in the OTC for 12 months under different levels of elevated CO2 (ambient control, 600 ppm, 900 ppm). After 12 months, the nodule numbers, bio mass, growth, and photosynthesis of C. equisetifolia rooted stem cuttings inoculated with Frankia were improved under 600 ppm of CO2. The rooted stem cuttings of C. equisetifolia inoculated with Frankia showed a higher number of nodules under 900 ppm of CO2 and cuttings without Frankia inoculation exhibited poor growth. Tissue Nitrogen (N) content was also higher under 900 ppm of CO2 than ambient control and 600 ppm levels. The photosynthetic rate was higher (17.8 μ mol CO2 m?2 s?1) in 900 ppm of CO2 than in 600 ppm (13.2 μ mol CO2 m?2 s?1) and ambient control (8.3 μ mol CO2 m?2 s?1). This study showed that Frankia can improve growth, N fixation and photosynthesis of C. equietifolia rooted stem cuttings under extreme elevated CO2 level conditions (900 ppm).  相似文献

Carbon dioxide has been found to produce various negative consequences for a number of aquatic species and is projected to rise in the future for many aquatic ecosystems. Crayfish act as indicators of water quality and function as keystone species in aquatic food webs; however, there is a paucity of research on how crayfish may respond to elevated CO2. This study quantified how shelter-seeking behavior in freshwater crayfish (e.g., family Cambaridae), a behavior critical for survival and fitness, may change following exposure to elevated pCO2. Red Swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii, Girard, 1852) were exposed to one of three potential levels of dissolved CO2 that could be found in freshwater basins currently or under future climate change conditions: Control (2 levels as the respective initial exposure. The treatment aquarium contained a shelter and was divided into three equal sections based on proximity to that shelter. Crayfish proximity to the shelter (defined by the tank sections) in the treatment aquarium was monitored every 5 s for a 2-min trial. Crayfish spent differing amounts of time in differing zones of the experiment and had different levels of activity, depending on their pCO2 exposure; crayfish acclimated to High pCO2 increased their time spent hiding and decreased their overall activity when compared to the Low pCO2 and Control treatments. Augmented shelter-seeking behavior may affect crayfish social hierarchies, feeding, mating, and mortality, which could generate cascading effects on the ecology of many freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献

Background

Exposure to future ocean acidification scenarios may alter the behaviour of marine teleosts through interference with neuroreceptor functioning. So far, most studies investigated effects of ocean acidification on the behaviour of fish, either isolated or in combination with environmental temperature. However, only few physiological studies on this issue were conducted despite the putative neurophysiological origin of the CO2-induced behavioural changes. Here, we present the metabolic consequences of long-term exposure to projected ocean acidification (396–548 μatm PCO2 under control and 915–1272 μatm under treatment conditions) and parallel warming in the brain of two related fish species, polar cod (Boreogadus saida, exposed to 0 °C, 3 °C, 6 °C and 8 °C) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua, exposed to 3 °C, 8 °C, 12 °C and 16 °C). It has been shown that B. saida is behaviourally vulnerable to future ocean acidification scenarios, while G. morhua demonstrates behavioural resilience.

Results

We found that temperature alters brain osmolyte, amino acid, choline and neurotransmitter concentrations in both species indicating thermal responses particularly in osmoregulation and membrane structure. In B. saida, changes in amino acid and osmolyte metabolism at the highest temperature tested were also affected by CO2, possibly emphasizing energetic limitations. We did not observe changes in neurotransmitters, energy metabolites, membrane components or osmolytes that might serve as a compensatory mechanism against CO2 induced behavioural impairments. In contrast to B. saida, such temperature limitation was not detected in G. morhua; however, at 8 °C, CO2 induced an increase in the levels of metabolites of the glutamate/GABA-glutamine cycle potentially indicating greater GABAergic activity in G.morhua. Further, increased availability of energy-rich substrates was detected under these conditions.

Conclusions

Our results indicate a change of GABAergic metabolism in the nervous system of Gadus morhua close to the optimum of the temperature range. Since a former study showed that juvenile G. morhua might be slightly more behaviourally resilient to CO2 at this respective temperature, we conclude that the observed change of GABAergic metabolism could be involved in counteracting OA induced behavioural changes. This may serve as a fitness advantage of this respective species compared to B. saida in a future warmer, more acidified polar ocean.

Aims

Despite extensive studies on effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]e) on plant growth, few studies have investigated the responses of native grassland plant species to [CO2]e in terms of nutrient acquisition.

Methods

The effects of [CO2]e (769 ± 23 ppm) on Artemisia frigida and Stipa krylovii, two dominant species in Inner Mongolia steppe were investigated by growing them for 7 weeks in Open-Top Chambers (OTC).

Results

Exposure to [CO2]e enhanced shoot and root growth of A. frigida and S. krylovii. Elevated [CO2] increased photosynthetic rates (Pn) by 34 % in A. frigida but decreased Pn by 52 % in S. krylovii. Moreover, root-secreted acid phosphatase activity in A. frigida was stimulated by [CO2]e, while exudation of malate from roots of S. krylovii was suppressed by [CO2]e. Exposure to [CO2]e led to a decrease in P concentration in shoots and roots of A. frigida and S. krylovii, but total amount of P accumulated in shoots and roots of both species was increased by [CO2]e.

Conclusions

The two dominant species in temperate steppes differed in their responses to [CO2]e, such that A. frigida was more adapted to [CO2]e than S. krylovii under low availability of soil P.

Peatlands are a critical carbon store comprising 30% of the Earth’s terrestrial soil carbon. Sphagnum mosses comprise up to 90% of peat in the northern hemisphere but impacts of climate change on Sphagnum mosses are poorly understood, limiting development of sustainable peatland management and restoration. This study investigates the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) (800 ppm) and hydrology on the growth of Sphagnum fallax, Sphagnum capillifolium and Sphagnum papillosum and greenhouse gas fluxes from moss–peat mesocosms. Elevated CO2 levels increased Sphagnum height and dry weight but the magnitude of the response differed among species. The most responsive species, S. fallax, yielded the most biomass compared to S. papillosum and S. capillifolium. Water levels and the CO2 treatment were found to interact, with the highest water level (1 cm below the surface) seeing the largest increase in dry weight under eCO2 compared to ambient (400 ppm) concentrations. Initially, CO2 flux rates were similar between CO2 treatments. After week 9 there was a consistent three-fold increase of the CO2 sink strength under eCO2. At the end of the experiment, S. papillosum and S. fallax were greater sinks of CO2 than S. capillifolium and the ? 7 cm water level treatment showed the strongest CO2 sink strength. The mesocosms were net sources of CH4 but the source strength varied with species, specifically S. fallax produced more CH4 than S. papillosum and S. capillifolium. Our findings demonstrate the importance of species selection on the outcomes of peatland restoration with regards to Sphagnum’s growth and GHG exchange.  相似文献

Preventing the spread of invasive fishes is an important aspect of management programs, but is challenging due to the behavior of fish and the nature of aquatic environments. The use of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) has recently gained traction as a non-physical barrier for invasive fishes due to its ability to elicit avoidance behaviors in fish. Research to date has focused on the development of CO2 barriers using static water environments. Because CO2 barriers have been proposed for flowing water (i.e., in rivers or shipping canals), understanding the dynamics between fish and elevated CO2 in flowing water is essential. Our study aims to define threshold levels required to alter behavior of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in flowing water, and to quantify behavioral metrics of fish exposed to < 200 [ambient], 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 µatm pCO2. We also sought to quantify the impacts of repeated CO2 exposure on fish behavior. Bluegill showed increased activity at 25,000 µatm, while largemouth bass showed increased activity at 100,000 µatm. When repeatedly exposed to cycles of 50,000 µatm pCO2, bluegill exhibited increased activity followed by a diminished response after the second exposure. Results from this study define threshold levels required to elicit behavioral responses, and show that the effects that multiple exposures of elevated pCO2 can decline, possibly due to habituation. Results will help shape the development and deployment of a CO2 barrier to control the movements of invasive fishes.  相似文献

Abiotic global change factors, such as rising atmospheric CO2, and biotic factors, such as exotic plant invasion, interact to alter the function of terrestrial ecosystems. An invasive lineage of the common reed, Phragmites australis, was introduced to North America over a century ago, but the belowground mechanisms underlying Phragmites invasion and persistence in natural systems remain poorly studied. For instance, Phragmites has a nitrogen (N) demand higher than native plant communities in many of the ecosystems it invades, but the source of the additional N is not clear. We exposed introduced Phragmites and native plant assemblages, containing Spartina patens and Schoenoplectus americanus, to factorial treatments of CO2 (ambient or +300 ppm), N (0 or 25 g m?2 year?1), and hydroperiod (4 levels), and focused our analysis on changes in root productivity as a function of depth and evaluated the effects of introduced Phragmites on soil organic matter mineralization. We report that non-native invasive Phragmites exhibited a deeper rooting profile than native marsh species under all experimental treatments, and also enhanced soil organic matter decomposition. Moreover, exposure to elevated atmospheric CO2 induced a sharp increase in deep root production in the invasive plant. We propose that niche separation accomplished through deeper rooting profiles circumvents nutrient competition where native species have relatively shallow root depth distributions; deep roots provide access to nutrient-rich porewater; and deep roots further increase nutrient availability by enhancing soil organic matter decomposition. We expect that rising CO2 will magnify these effects in deep-rooting invasive plants that compete using a tree-like strategy against native herbaceous plants, promoting establishment and invasion through niche separation.  相似文献

The black locust is adapted to elevated [CO 2 ] through changes in nitrogen allocation characteristics in leaves.

Abstract

The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is an invasive woody legume within Japan. This prolific species has a high photosynthetic rate and growth rate, and undergoes symbiosis with N2-fixing micro-organisms. To determine the effect of elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] on its photosynthetic characteristics, we studied the chlorophyll (Chl) and leaf nitrogen (N) content, and the leaf structure and N allocation patterns in the leaves and acetylene reduction activity after four growing seasons, in R. pseudoacacia. Our specimens were grown at ambient [CO2] (370 μmol mol?1) and at elevated [CO2] (500 μmol mol?1), using a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system. Net photosynthetic rate at growth [CO2] (A growth) and acetylene reduction activity were significantly higher, but maximum carboxylation rate of RuBisCo (V cmax), maximum rate of electron transport driving RUBP regeneration (J max), net photosynthetic rate under enhanced CO2 concentration and light saturation (A max), the N concentration in leaf, and in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCo) content were significantly lower grown at elevated [CO2] than at ambient [CO2]. We also found that RuBisCo/N were less at elevated [CO2], whereas Chl/N increased significantly. Allocation characteristics from N in leaves to photosynthetic proteins, NL (Light-harvesting complex: LHC, photosystem I and II: PSI and PSII) and other proteins also changed. When R. pseudoacacia was grown at elevated [CO2], the N allocation to RuBisCo (NR) decreased to a greater extent but NL and N remaining increased relative to specimens grown at ambient [CO2]. We suggest that N remobilization from RuBisCo is more efficient than from proteins of electron transport (NE), and from NL. These physiological responses of the black locust are significant as being an adaptation strategy to global environmental changes.

Cement plants account for significant emissions of CO2 and other pollutants into the atmosphere. As a means for its mitigation, we tested the effect of a cement industry-based flue gas simulation (FGS — 18% CO2, 9% O2, 300 ppm NO2, 140 ppm SO2) on the green alga, Chlorella sorokiniana. Culture pH, cell density, cell viability and productivity, specific growth rates, photosynthetic performance, and biochemical composition were monitored. The treatments consisted of different FGS volumes (0.1, 0.3, 0.8, 1.5, 6, and 48 L day?1) that were applied in a series of laboratory-scale semi-continuous batch cultures under controlled conditions. Controls were exposed to 18% CO2 enriched air. Cell density showed that C. sorokiniana was able to grow in all treatments, but compared to the controls, low pH (~ 5.0) caused by 48 L FGS day?1 led to 27% decrease in specific growth rate. Increasing FGS exposure decreased maximum and operational quantum yields obtained by pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry, while photochemical quenching remained constant (~ 0.93). The α and rETR max parameters calculated from rapid light curves decreased with increasing FGS exposure. Total proteins and carbohydrates (per cell basis) increased after 6 and 48 L FGS day?1, which can be advantageous for biotechnological applications, but cell productivity (cells L?1 day?1) decreased. Despite the effects in physiology, C. sorokiniana could withstand a pH range of 6.0–5.0 imposed by 48 L FGS day?1. Overall, C. sorokiniana can be considered a robust species in flue gas bioremediation.  相似文献

Elevated CO 2 reduced fine root dynamics (production and turnover) of white birch seedlings, especially grown in volcanic ash soil compared with brown forest soil.

Abstract

Increased atmospheric CO2 usually enhances photosynthetic ability and growth of trees. To understand how increased CO2 affects below-ground part of trees under varied soil condition, we investigated the responses of the fine root (diameter <2 mm) dynamics of Japanese white birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) which was planted in 2010. The three-year-old birch seedlings were grown in four experimental treatments comprising two levels of CO2, i.e., ambient: 380–390 and elevated: 500 μmol mol?1, in combination with two kinds of soil: brown forest (BF) soil and volcanic ash (VA) soil which has few nutrients. The growth and turnover of fine roots were measured for 3 years (2011–2013) using the Mini-rhizotron. In the first observation year, live fine root length (standing crop) in BF soil was not affected by CO2 treatment, but it was reduced by the elevated CO2 from the second observation year. In VA soil, live fine root length was reduced by elevated CO2 for all 3 years. Fine root turnover tended to decrease under elevated CO2 compared with ambient in both soil types during the first and second observation years. Turnover of fine root production and mortality was also affected by the two factors, elevated CO2 and different soil types. Median longevity of fine root increased under elevated CO2, especially in VA soil at the beginning, and a shorter fine root lifespan appeared after 2 years of observation (2011–2012). These results suggest that elevated CO2 does not consistently stimulate fine root turnover, particularly during the plant seedlings stage, as it may depend on the costs and benefits of constructing and retaining roots. Therefore, despite the other uncontrollable environment factors, carbon sequestration to the root system may be varied by CO2 treatment period, soil type and plant age.

Objectives

N-Acetyl-d-neuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) is often synthesized from exogenous N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) and excess pyruvate. We have previously constructed a recombinant Escherichia coli strain for Neu5Ac production using GlcNAc and intracellular phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) as substrates (Zhu et al. Biotechnol Lett 38:1–9, 2016).

Results

PEP synthesis-related genes, pck and ppsA, were overexpressed within different modes to construct PEP-supply modules, and their effects on Neu5Ac production were investigated. All the PEP-supply modules enhanced Neu5Ac production. For the best module, pCDF-pck-ppsA increased Neu5Ac production to 8.6 ± 0.15 g l?1, compared with 3.6 ± 0.15 g l?1 of the original strain. Neu5Ac production was further increased to 15 ± 0.33 g l?1 in a 1 l fermenter.

Conclusions

The PEP-supply module can improve the intracellular PEP supply and enhance Neu5Ac production, which benefited industrial Neu5Ac production.

To investigate the effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment on physiology and autumnal leaf phenology, we exposed 3-year-old sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) seedlings to 800 (A8), 600 (A6), and 400 μL(CO2) L–1 (AA) in nine continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) chambers during the growing season of 2014. Leaf abscission timing, abscised leaf area percentages, leaf number, light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax), leaf area, accumulative growth rates, and biomass were determined and assessed. The results suggested the following: (1) no significant differences were found in the timing of leaf abscission in the three CO2-concentration treatments; (2) PNmax was continuously stimulated to the greatest extent in A8 at 319% and 160% in A6 until the end of the growing season, respectively; and (3) leaf number, leaf area, and accumulative height growth all significantly increased by elevated CO2, which led to a 323% increase in A8 biomass and 235% in A6 biomass after 156-d fumigation. In summary, the results suggest, the timing of leaf abscission of sugar maple in fall was not modified by CO2 enrichment, the increased carbon gain by elevated CO2 was mainly due to increased leaf area, more leaves, and the continuously enhanced high photosynthesis throughout the growing season instead of the leaf life span.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of maize (Zea mays)-fallow rotation, residue management, and soil water on carbon mineralization in a tropical cropping system in Ghana. After 15 months of the trial, maize–legume rotation treatments had significantly (P?C 0 (μg CO2–C g?1) than maize–elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) rotations. The C 0 for maize–grass rotation treatments was significantly related to the biomass input (r?=?0.95; P?=?0.05), but that for the maize–legume rotation was not. The soil carbon mineralization rate constant, k (per day), was also significantly related to the rotation treatments (P?k values for maize–grass and maize–legume rotation treatments were 0.025 and 0.036 day?1 respectively. The initial carbon mineralization rate, m 0 (μg CO2–C g?1 day ?1), was significantly (P?θ. The m 0 ranged from 3.88 to 18.67 and from 2.30 to 15.35 μg CO2–C g?1 day?1 for maize–legume and maize–grass rotation treatments, respectively, when the soil water varied from 28% to 95% field capacity (FC). A simple soil water content (θ)-based factor, f w, formulated as: \(f_{\text{w}} = \left[ {\frac{{\theta - \theta _{\text{d}} }}{{\theta _{{\text{FC}}} - \theta _{\text{d}} }}} \right]\), where θ d and θ FC were the air-dry and field capacity soil water content, respectively, adequately described the variation of the m 0 with respect to soil water (R 2?=?0.91; RMSE?=?1.6). Such a simple relationship could be useful for SOC modeling under variable soil water conditions.  相似文献

Introduction

Ongoing ocean warming and acidification increasingly affect marine ecosystems, in particular around the Antarctic Peninsula. Yet little is known about the capability of Antarctic notothenioid fish to cope with rising temperature in acidifying seawater. While the whole animal level is expected to be more sensitive towards hypercapnia and temperature, the basis of thermal tolerance is set at the cellular level, with a putative key role for mitochondria. This study therefore investigates the physiological responses of the Antarctic Notothenia rossii after long-term acclimation to increased temperatures (7°C) and elevated P CO2 (0.2 kPa CO2) at different levels of physiological organisation.

Results

For an integrated picture, we analysed the acclimation capacities of N. rossii by measuring routine metabolic rate (RMR), mitochondrial capacities (state III respiration) as well as intra- and extracellular acid–base status during acute thermal challenges and after long-term acclimation to changing temperature and hypercapnia. RMR was partially compensated during warm- acclimation (decreased below the rate observed after acute warming), while elevated P CO2 had no effect on cold or warm acclimated RMR. Mitochondrial state III respiration was unaffected by temperature acclimation but depressed in cold and warm hypercapnia-acclimated fish. In both cold- and warm-exposed N. rossii, hypercapnia acclimation resulted in a shift of extracellular pH (pHe) towards more alkaline values. A similar overcompensation was visible in muscle intracellular pH (pHi). pHi in liver displayed a slight acidosis after warm normo- or hypercapnia acclimation, nevertheless, long-term exposure to higher P CO2 was compensated for by intracellular bicarbonate accumulation.

Conclusion

The partial warm compensation in whole animal metabolic rate indicates beginning limitations in tissue oxygen supply after warm-acclimation of N. rossii. Compensatory mechanisms of the reduced mitochondrial capacities under chronic hypercapnia may include a new metabolic equilibrium to meet the elevated energy demand for acid–base regulation. New set points of acid–base regulation under hypercapnia, visible at the systemic and intracellular level, indicate that N. rossii can at least in part acclimate to ocean warming and acidification. It remains open whether the reduced capacities of mitochondrial energy metabolism are adaptive or would impair population fitness over longer timescales under chronically elevated temperature and P CO2.

An annular internally illuminated photobioreatcor (IIPBR) configuration based on the airlift/bubble column principles was developed and validated at an 18 l prototype scale using Scenedemus sp. and Nannochloropsis salina in batch and semi-continuous modes, at constant light supply and constant gas-to-culture volume ratio, but at varying CO2-to-air ratios. Highest biomass production was recorded at CO2-to-air ratio of 4% with Scenedesmus sp. and at 1% with Nannochloropsis salina. The energetic performance of this IIPBR was quantified in terms of biomass productivity per unit energy input, P/E (g W?1 day?1), considering energy input for illumination and for pneumatic mixing and circulation. Under optimal conditions, the IIPBR evaluated in this study achieved P/E of 1.42 g W?1 day?1 for Scenedesmus sp. and P/E of 0.34 g W?1 day?1 for Nannochloropsis salina. These P/E values are better than those estimated for airlift and bubble column photobioreactor configurations reported in the literature.  相似文献

Increased atmospheric CO2 and gamma irradiation have a significant impact on the plant photosynthetic apparatus and organic compound production. In this study, we evaluated the effect of elevated CO2 on the photosynthetic efficiency and production of defensive secondary metabolites (flavonoids) induced by gamma irradiation as a physical elicitor in Centella asiatica. Irradiated and non-irradiated 10-week-old plants of C. asiatica were exposed to 400 and 800 μmol mol?1 of atmospheric CO2 in growth chambers for 2 h every day until six weeks. A CO2-enriched atmosphere initially improved the photosynthetic efficiency and ameliorated the detrimental impact of gamma irradiation on the photosynthetic apparatus, increasing carbon allocation into the flavonoid pathway. Elevated CO2 combined with gamma irradiation resulted in the highest concentration of flavonoids in C. asiatica tissues compared with the other treatments. There was an enhancement in rutin (2.49 fold), naringin (2.15 fold), fisetin (4.07 fold), and morin (4.62 fold) with rising CO2 concentrations from 400 to 800 μmol mol?1 in the irradiated plants. With increasing CO2 concentration, the compensation point and the respiration declined, whereas the apparent quantum yield and the maximum net photosynthesis (A max) rate increased. The efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) was improved in the irradiated plants grown under high concentrations of CO2. The total carbohydrate concentration reached the maximum value at the highest level of CO2, followed by gamma irradiation combined with the highest level of CO2. Irradiated plants of C. asiatica grown under elevated CO2 could be superior to non-irradiated plants due to increased carbon availability both for the flavonoid biosynthesis and for the photosynthetic pathway.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance (g s) of mature trees exposed to elevated CO2 concentrations was examined in a diverse deciduous forest stand in NW Switzerland. Measurements of g s were carried out on upper canopy foliage before noon, over four growing seasons, including an exceptionally dry summer (2003). Across all species reductions in stomatal conductance were smaller than 25% most likely around 10%, with much variation among species and trees. Given the large heterogeneity in light conditions within a tree crown, this signal was not statistically significant, but the responses within species were surprisingly consistent throughout the study period. Except during a severe drought, stomatal conductance was always lower in trees of Carpinus betulus exposed to elevated CO2 compared to Carpinus trees in ambient air, but the difference was only statistically significant on 2 out of 15 days. In contrast, stomatal responses in Fagus sylvatica and Quercus petraea varied around zero with no consistent trend in relation to CO2 treatment. During the 2003 drought in the third treatment year, the CO2 effect became reversed in Carpinus, resulting in higher g s in trees exposed to elevated CO2 compared to control trees, most likely due to better water supply because of the previous soil water savings. This was supported by less negative predawn leaf water potential in CO2 enriched Carpinus trees, indicating an improved water status. These findings illustrate (1) smaller than expected CO2-effects on stomata of mature deciduous forest trees, and (2) the possibility of soil moisture feedback on canopy water relations under elevated CO2.  相似文献

In view of the increase in global warming and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, it is essential to investigate the influences of climate change on plant growth and water use in arid and semi-arid grassland species. Experiments were conducted to understand the ecophysiological response of four indigenous species to elevated CO2 in the semi-arid sandy grassland of central Inner Mongolia. Seedlings of the four species were grown for 8 weeks at four different consistently elevated CO2 concentrations in the environment-controlled growth chambers. All four elevated CO2 concentrations (400, 800, 1200, 1600 ppm) were found to result in decreased stomatal conductance (26–86%), decreased transpiration rate (21–80%), increased shoot water potential (1–42%) and increased water use efficiency (WUE) (10–412%) for two Artemisia species and Caragana korshinskii. Under our experimental conditions, the two Artemisia species and C. korshinskii would benefit more than Hedysarum laeve from exposure to elevated CO2 in terms of higher shoot water potential and WUE combined with lower stomatal conductance and transpiration rate. The results indicate that in a warmer, CO2-enriched future atmospheric environment, WUE in semi-arid grasslands may be higher than previously expected. Our findings will provide information for screening appropriate species for restoration of the degraded sandy grasslands in semi-arid areas under future climate change scenarios.  相似文献
