Secondary sex ratios (SSR) were calculated from 1,385 offspring delivered by 372 females in the Cayo Santiago population of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) from 1976 through 1984. The SSR for the entire colony ranged from 0.86 to 1.46 males per female (combined total: 1.08), but no significant difference was observed (P > .05). SSR values were compared among the troops for each year. The SSR differed significantly among the six social groups (P < .05) only in 1978. The annual SSR of each troop was compared over 9 years. Significant variation was found only in group O. The annual SSR was significantly skewed (P < .05, males > females) for three troops in 3 separate years. The SSR did not vary according to troop rank. No significant difference was found among the 17 matrilines of the population, but comparison of matrilines within each social group revealed a significant difference in the SSR (P < .02) for the three matrilines in group I. This was due to the significantly skewed SSR (P = .0080, females > males) of the DM genealogy in that troop. SSR values were not related to matrilineal rank. Individual dominance rank did not bias the SSR. Complete reproductive histories for 266 females showed no evidence of significantly skewed SSR values. Age-related effects on the SSR were examined by using cross-sectional and cohort-based analyses. The SSR did not vary significantly (P > .05) with maternal age, but it was significantly skewed (P < .05) toward males at the ages of 5 and 9 years. Parity had no significant effect (P > .05) on SSR values. Wide variation occurred in the SSR of the Cayo Santiago population. Rank-related adjustment of the SSR at the level of the troop, matriline, or individual, as reported in short-term studies of other primate social groups, may reflect normal annual variation in the SSR evident only from longitudinal observations of large multigroup primate populations.  相似文献

We report cryoglobulinaemia (CG) in a rhesus macaque whose serum sample was gel‐like at <37°C and resolubilised upon warming. Mixed CG was diagnosed using serum protein electrophoresis and serum immunofixation electrophoresis. Renal damage and arthrophyma were observed during necropsy. Sperm-freezing extenders supplemented with sugar or a combination of different sugars are widely used for the cryopreservation of nonhuman primate spermatozoa. Understanding which sugar or combination of sugars offers the highest level of cryoprotection would be beneficial for the development of sperm-freezing extenders. In the present study we aimed to investigate the effect of glucose, lactose, and raffinose separately or in combination on the cryosurvival of rhesus monkey spermatozoa. Toward that end, we prepared eight extenders by adding various types of sugars to a basic medium (BM): G-BM (0.3 M glucose), L-BM (0.3 M lactose), R-BM (0.3 M raffinose), LG-BM (0.15 M lactose+0.15 M glucose), RG-BM (0.15 M raffinose+0.15 M glucose), LR-BM (0.15 M lactose+0.15 M raffinose), and LRG-BM (0.1 M lactose+0.1 M raffinsoe+0.1 M glucose). A saline control (0.157 M sodium chloride) was also used. The results showed no significant difference in post-thaw motility when spermatozoa were frozen with G-BM, L-BM, LG-BM, RG-BM, and LRG-BM, but the post-thaw motility was significantly lower when it was frozen with R-BM, LR-BM, and the saline control. The highest plasma membrane integrity was achieved when spermatozoa were frozen with G-BM, L-BM, LG-BM, RG-BM, and LRG-BM, and the highest acrosome integrity was achieved with G-BM, L-BM, LG-BM, RG-BM, LRG-BM, and the saline control. The results indicate that the various sugars offered different protective effects. For the cryopreservation of rhesus monkey spermatozoa, glucose (monosaccharide) and lactose (disaccharide) were shown to be more suitable than raffinose (trisaccharide) for preserving spermatozoal motility, plasma membrane, and acrosome. 我们的前期工作表明,不育症人精液中纤溶酶原激活因子(plasminogen activator;PA)活性明显升高;给成年办和猕猴注射长效睾酮诱发无精过程中,精液PA含量也伴随上升,为进一步查明PA的来源和对精子的作用,原位杂交检测组织型PA(tPA),尿激酶型PA(uPA)及PA抑制因子-1(PAI-1)泊mRNAs在成年健康猕附睾、前列腺和精囊中的表达。体外培养猕猴精子,培液中加入uPA、tPA及其底物纤溶酶原(plasminogen),测试PA对精子活力、顶体反应及激活卵子的影响。结果表明,猕猴附睾、前列腺和精囊均表达tPA、uPA和PAI-1 mRNAs。加入uPA能维持精子的活力,使精子产生超激活运动,诱导顶体反应的发生,并使精子获得激活卵子的能力,这说明猕猴精浆PA除来源于睾丸外,可能主要来源于附睾及附性腺;在体外,uPA,而不是tPA,可能诱导精子获能。  相似文献

Autoimmune bullous disease is very uncommon in non‐human primates. We observed a bullous skin disease in a male rhesus monkey while conducting porcine islet xenotransplantation. Fifty days after the transplantation, multiple bullous skin lesions were observed. There was no mucosal involvement. Skin biopsy results demonstrated a subepidermal blister with no necrotic keratinocytes. Immunofluorescent staining showed linear IgG deposition at the roof of the blister. These skin lesions spontaneously disappeared. Considering these results, this monkey was diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid (BP). As far as we know, this is the first report of BP in non‐human primates.  相似文献

This study was designed to assess the effects of various cryopreservation protocols on the postthaw survival of rhesus macaque sperm. Multiple ejaculates of five mature males were collected and frozen by each of four different methods. Cryopreservation significantly reduced motility in all samples, regardless of the method, and the response of different ejaculates of the same male to each method proved to be consistent. The freezing method was a significant factor in determining the immediate postthaw motility, although this effect disappeared after 4 hr. Moreover, there was a significant interaction between individual males and freezing method suggesting that developing a single freezing protocol that is universally suitable may be difficult.  相似文献

Ectopic ureter is a congenital abnormality where the ureter terminates at a site other than the urinary bladder. A five-year-old female rhesus monkey presented with a urine odor, a wet perineum, and persistent dribbling of urine. An ultrasound examination revealed a cyst-like structure (1 × 0.75 cm) on the left side of the bladder. Computed tomographic excretory urography (CTEU) imaging revealed a left unilateral extramural ectopic ureter, which was connected to the vagina. The perineum and wet hair were dried and disinfected with 0.4% chlorhexidine for perineal hygiene and skin care. The animal was closely monitored for potential moist dermatitis near the perineum and for urinary tract infection. The complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry results showed no signs of inflammation during the observation period. This is the first report of detailed diagnosis of ectopic ureter by ultrasound and CTEU in a female rhesus monkey.  相似文献

Studies of Y chromosome evolution often emphasize gene loss, but this loss has been counterbalanced by addition of new genes. The DAZ genes, which are critical to human spermatogenesis, were acquired by the Y chromosome in the ancestor of Old World monkeys and apes. We and our colleagues recently sequenced the rhesus macaque Y chromosome, and comparison of this sequence to human and chimpanzee enables us to reconstruct much of the evolutionary history of DAZ. We report that DAZ arrived on the Y chromosome about 38 million years ago via the transposition of at least 1.1 megabases of autosomal DNA. This transposition also brought five additional genes to the Y chromosome, but all five genes were subsequently lost through mutation or deletion. As the only surviving gene, DAZ experienced extensive restructuring, including intragenic amplification and gene duplication, and has been the target of positive selection in the chimpanzee lineage. To date, there is no commercially available Y chromosome probe that can be used for fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for the male rhesus monkey. We have recently generated a probe for FISH with high specificity to the short arm of the rhesus monkey Y chromosome. In this study, we further describe a method that keeps the integrity of tissue-specific antigenic structures for immunofluorescence staining subsequent to FISH on paraffin-embedded rhesus monkey tissues. We have examined this technique in combination with an epithelial cell-specific marker, cytokeratin 8/18 (CK8/18), on various tissues, including jejunum, liver, kidney, and pancreas. CK8/18 and Y chromosome signals were distinctly seen simultaneously on epithelial cells from the same tissue section from male but not female monkeys. These studies indicate that our FISH immunofluorescence technique can be reliably used to identify and phenotype male cells in paraffin-embedded rhesus monkey tissues.  相似文献

To obtain more detailed information relative to the potential usefulness of using radio frequency (RF) energy in treating hypothermia, anesthetized rhesus monkeys were used in a rewarming study that compared a conventional method (heating pad) with an RF induction coil system. Rectal temperature (Tre) of each subject was monitored, and enzyme and isoenzyme levels were determined from blood samples collected before, during, and up to 48 h after hypothermia in order to assess the effects of each rewarming method. The previously observed postprocedure rise in serum enzymes (most visible at 24 h) was again seen, with no statistically significant difference in the time course of serum enzyme levels between the two treatments for comparable durations of hypothermia. To test the limits of the ability of the RF induction coil system, successively more severe hypothermia was induced in the subjects to the point of cardiovascular collapse (Tre less than 20 degrees C); RF energy was successful in resuscitating the profoundly hypothermic subjects without discernible harmful effects.  相似文献

Ultrastructural studies on the spermatozoa in different regions of the epididymis of the rhesus monkey have shown that the process of sperm maturation is associated with the caudad migration of the cytoplastmic droplet, a reduction in the volume of the cytoplasmic droplet, and an obvious wrinkling of the plasma membrane surrounding the head of the spermatozoa. These changes are completed by the time the spermatozoa reach the distal-middle segment of the epididymis. The present studies also indicate that spermatozoa are incorporated into the intraepithelial cells in the epidymis. This finding suggests that spermiophagy is a normal occurrence in the epidymis of rhesus monkey.  相似文献

The close phylogenetic relationship of macaques to humans has resulted in their widespread use as a preclinical model for bone marrow transplantation and stem cell gene therapy. To facilitate further use of this model, we undertook analysis of hematopoietic cells using multiparametric flow cytometric analysis. Rhesus CD34+CD38- cells displayed a number of characteristics of primitive hematopoietic cells, including low forward and orthogonal scatter and the lack of expression of lineage-specific markers or human lymphocyte antigen-DR. Four-color flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that rhesus CD34+CD38- cells were heterogenous with respect to Thy-1 expression and were CD59dim. Quantitative limiting dilution long-term culture-initiating cell (LTC-IC) analysis demonstrated that CD34+CD38- cells were approximately 150-fold enriched for LTC-IC as compared with unfractionated bone marrow, and occurred at a frequency similar to that previously reported in humans. Thus, as in humans, the CD34+38- population of rhesus macaque bone marrow is enriched for primitive, multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cells.  相似文献

In the elderly, intact motor functions of the upper extremity are critical for the completion of activities of daily living. Many studies have provided insight into age-related changes in motor function. However, the precise nature and extent of motor impairments of the upper extremity remains unclear. In the current study we have modified two tasks to assess hand/digit function in both young and aged rhesus monkeys. We tested monkeys from 9 to 26 years of age on these tasks to determine the level of fine motor performance across the adult age range. Compared to young monkeys (9–12 years of age), aged monkeys (15–26 years of age) were mildly impaired on fine motor control of the digits. These findings are consistent with previous studies that have found age-related impairment in fine motor function. However, the magnitude and extent of impairment in the current study does differ from previous findings and is likely due to methodological differences in the degree of task complexity.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the autonomic innervation of the carotid sinus and heart in the rhesus monkey. Nine male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and one male crab-eating macaque (M. fascicularis) were carefully dissected from the origin of the vagus nerves and superior cervical ganglia to the level of the fourth thoracic ganglion. The specimens were either freshly killed or obtained no later than 24 hours post mortem. The macaque monkeys were found to possess an innervation pattern that displayed features common to dog (connections between the vagus nerves and middle cervical ganglia), baboon (distinct cervical sympathetic and cervical vagal nerve trunks), and man (nerves projecting from the middle cervical and stellate ganglia to the heart). Distinct inferior cervical and first thoracic ganglia were never seen, but rather, large and well defined stellate ganglia were found. The macaque innervation pattern, when considered as a whole, most closely resembled the baboon.  相似文献

Aged individuals experience decreased fine motor function of the hand and digits, which could result, in part, from the chronic, systemic state of inflammation that occurs with aging. Recent research for treating age-related inflammation has focused on the effects of nutraceuticals that have anti-inflammatory properties. One particular dietary polyphenol, curcumin, the principal curcuminoid of the spice turmeric, has been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory effects and there is mounting evidence that curcumin may serve to reduce systemic inflammation. Therefore, it could be useful for alleviating age-related impairments in fine motor function. To test this hypothesis we assessed the efficacy of a dietary intervention with a commercially available optimized curcumin to ameliorate or delay the effects of aging on fine motor function of the hand of rhesus monkeys. We administered oral daily doses of curcumin or a control vehicle to 11 monkeys over a 14- to 18-month period in which they completed two rounds of fine motor function testing. The monkeys receiving curcumin were significantly faster at retrieving a food reward by round 2 of testing than monkeys receiving a control vehicle. Further, the monkeys receiving curcumin demonstrated a greater degree of improvement in performance on our fine motor task by round 2 of testing than monkeys receiving a control vehicle. These findings reveal that fine motor function of the hand and digits is improved in middle-aged monkeys receiving chronic daily administration of curcumin.  相似文献

The ultrastructural features of the principal cell in the epididymal epithelium of the monkey epididymis are suggestive of the cell carrying out a dual function of absorption and secretion. Both these functions occur on the luminal surface of the cell as well as on the lateral and basal aspects of the cell which face the intercellular spaces. Transmision Electron Microscopic studies of epididymal tissues following their impregnation with lanthanum nitrate indicated that the intercellular spaces are effectively sealed-off from the luminal space by the apically situated tight junctions between adjoining principal cells. The intercellular spaces are contiguous with the perivascular spaces of the subepithelial blood capillaries. It is suggested that the absorptive and secretory functions occuring on the apical surface of cells may be related to the creation of an appropriate intraluminal milieu for the maturation of spermatozoa while the occurrence of these functions in the intercellular spaces may represent an exchange of substances between the principal cells and the subepithelial capillaries.  相似文献
