The genera Grindelia Willd. and Haplopappus Cass. belong to the family Asteraceae - Astereae and are distributed in America and South America, respectively. Previous cytotaxonomic studies showed for South American species of Grindelia 2n=12 and for Haplopappus 2n=10 and 2n=12. Both Grindelia species (G. anethifolia, G. prunelloides), newly analyzed with molecular-cytological methods, exhibited symmetric karyotypes (AsI %=55.46 and 55.95) with metacentric chromosome sets (5m + 1m-sat) and 2n=12 chromosomes. The NOR was detected after fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with 18/25S rDNA in the satellite chromosome 2. In contrast H. Happlopappus glutinosus, H. grindeloides and H. stolpii showed exclusively a higher asymmetric index (66.83%, 67.01% and 68.87%, respectively) with submetacentric chromosome sets (4sm + 1sm–sat). The sat-chromosomes 3 of H. glutinosus and H. grindelioides were both significantly different in their length from chromosomes 2 and 4. Furthermore in Grindelia the FISH with 5S rDNA could estimate signals in the short arms of chromosomes 3 or 4, that were not significantly differentiated in their length. Contrary to these findings in Grindelia, the position of 5S rDNA in Haplopappus was detected in the long arms of chromosome 1 (H. grindelioides and H. stolpii) and chromosome 2 (with two different loci) and chromosome 4 of H. glutinosus. The lengths of all measured chromosome arms with 5S rDNA were significantly different to those of the neighbours in the karyotypes. The two-color FISH of 5S and 18/25S rDNA had provided clear karyotypic markers for three (Haplopappus glutinosus) and two (H. grindelioides and H. stolpii) chromosomes. The number and position of rDNA signals were relatively highly conserved in the investigated five species without the double marked chromosome 2 of H. glutinosus, which shows an evolutionary dynamic of this 5S rRNA specific gene cluster. This investigation supports the assumption that the evolution of New World members of Grindelia and Haplopappus has not been accompanied by large karyotypic changes, but small chromosomal rearrangements have undoubtedly occurred (e.g. 5S rDNA localizations).  相似文献

Rayjacksonia R. L. Hartman & M. A. Lane, gen. nov. (Compositae: Astereae), is named to accommodate the “phyllocephalus complex,” formerly of Haplopappus Cass. sect. Blepharodon DC. The new combinations are R. phyllocephalus (DC.) R. L. Hartman & M. A. Lane, R. annua (Rydb.) R. L. Hartman & M. A. Lane, and R. aurea (A. Gray) R. L. Hartman & M. A. Lane. This transfer completes the reclassification of the North American species of Haplopappus sensu Hall, leaving that genus exclusively South American. Rayjacksonia has a base chromosome number of x = 6. Furthermore, it shares abruptly ampliate disk corollas, deltate disk style-branch appendages, and corolla epidermal cell type, among other features, with Grindelia, Isocoma, Olivaea, Prionopsis, Stephanodoria, and Xanthocephalum. Phylogenetic analyses of morphological and chloroplast DNA restriction site data, taken together, demonstrate that these genera are closely related but distinct.  相似文献

The close systematic affinities between the composite genera Haplopappus and Chrysothamnus, including different points of contact with “intergeneric” hybrids, are reviewed. The Mohave Desert has several shrubby representatives of each genus, and at census sites from the east-central New York Mountains to buttes at the extreme western end of the desert, north-facing granitic slopes at the foothills of mountain ranges support four Haplopappus species (H. cuneatus. H. laricifolius, H. linearifolias and H. cooperi) and one Chrysothamnus (C. teretifolius). These five species occupy “distributional niches” represented as ranges and areas of dominance on the habitat plane of slope angle and proportion of rocks in the substrate. Central desert sites have four species (excluding C. teretifolius); peripheral desert sites always include C. teretifolius rather than H. laricifolius and support two to four species depending on the size and isolation of the suitable habitat area. Species may occupy different positions on the habitat gradient depending on species number at the site, moisture availability, and in particular competition from other species. C. teretifolius appears to be favored when population turnover rates are high, either in disturbed sites or on natural islands of habitat.  相似文献

Osbertia, a stoloniferous group confined to the montane regions of Mexico and adjacent Guatemala, was first proposed as a genus byGreene (1895), but most workers have retained the taxon as part ofHaplopappus. It is clearly closer toNoticastrum, Erigeron orHeterotheca than it is toHaplopappus sensu stricto. The present treatment recognizes two species, a widespread highly variableOsbertia stolonifera and a newly describedO. chihuahuana from northwestern Mexico. Distribution maps, distinguishing features, full synonymy and illustrations are presented.  相似文献

Chromosome counts are reported for 33 species from all four sections of the genus Haplopappus in South America. These include first reports for 28 species and two putative hybrids. All chromosome numbers reported herein are 2n = 5II, with the exception of H. prunelloides with 2n = 6II. Unlike the North American species, the morphological diversity of South American taxa is not concomitant with chromosomal variation.  相似文献

Mitra , J., and F. C. Steward . (Cornell U., Ithaca, New York.) Growth induction in cultures of Haplopappus gracilis. II. The behavior of the nucleus. Amer. Jour. Bot. 48(5): 358–368. Illus. 1961.—Cells of Haplopappus, which have been stimulated to grow under the influence of coconut milk and such synergists as naphthalene or 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid, can be cultivated as free cells, as small cell clusters, or as peripheral cells on a cultured colony or mass. Such cells display forms and cell lineages, the general pattern of which is reminiscent of those that may occur in early embryogeny. To this extent, Haplopappus resembles what has previously been observed in the growth of free cells of carrot. The form of the normal chromosome of Haplopappus (2n = 4) is described with respect to root tip cells. The range of effects which may be observed in the nuclei of the cultured cell is also described. Such variations as the following were encountered: (1) multinucleate giant cells which may divide by internal segmentation; (2) polyploidy, giving rise to highly polyploid nuclei up to, and even in excess of, 64 chromosomes; (3) somatic pairing; (4) haploidy; (5) pseudochiasmata, with the evident implication of somatic “crossing-over”; (6) chromosome breaks, reunions and bridges, such as are commonly associated with effects of radiation and with chemical mutagens. Attention is drawn to the usefulness of this material for the further experimental investigation of the biochemical basis for the cytological events which are here described, and, if the variant cells may be cloned, of the relationship between the aberrant nuclear cytology and the ability of the cells or colonies to differentiate or to undergo morphogenesis.  相似文献

In the four species studied, Grindelia stricta ssp. blakei, G. arizonica, G. lanceolata, and Prionopsis ciliata (Haplopappus ciliatus), the female gametophyte develops according to the Polygonum (normal) type from the chalazal megaspore of a row of four. In most cases only two antipodal cells are formed, the micropylar one originally containing two nuclei. The number of nuclei increases in both cells; one or both antipodal cells typically grow laterally into the integument, often extending to near the surface of the ovule. This resembles the condition previously reported in Grindelia squarrosa. Since the four species of Grindelia have similar antipodal outgrowths, such outgrowths may be considered typical for this genus. The fact that Prionopsis resembles Grindelia in regard to outgrowths from the antipodal cells and differs in this respect from typical Haplopappus helps to justify its separation from Haplopappus, and perhaps its suggested merger with Grindelia.  相似文献

Jackson , R. C. (U. Kansas, Lawrence.) Interspecific hybridization in Haplopappus and its bearing on chromosome evolution in the Blepharodon section. Amer. Jour. Bot. 49 (2) : 119–132. Illus. 1962.—Cytological analyses of interspecific hybrids between H. gracilis (n = 2) and H. spinulosus ssp. australis (n = 8) indicate that ssp. australis is a segmental allotetraploid, derived from past hybridization between 2 taxa with chromosome numbers of n = 4. Analysis of hybrids between H. gracilis (n = 2) and H. ravenii (n = 4), a previously undescribed species, has shown that the chromosome segments of these 2 species are almost completely homologous. Differential contraction is suggested as the explanation for the disappearance in late pachytene of presumed non-homologous segments which were evident in some cells at early pachytene. The pairing relationship of gracilis and ravenii chromosomes at pachytene and later prophase I stages of meiosis indicates that gracilis has evolved from ravenii by an aneuploid reduction process similar to that described for Crepis. The close morphological relationship of the 2 species adds further support to this proposition. Data from the cytological analysis of both interspecific hybrids indicate that x = 4 is the basic chromosome number for the Blepharodon section of Haplopappus.  相似文献

Raven , Peter H. (U. California, Los Angeles.), Otto T. Solbrig , Donald W. Kyhos , and Richard Snow . Chromosome numbers in Compositae. I. Astereae. Amer. Jour. Bot. 47(2) : 124—132. Illus. 1960.–Ninety-two new counts are reported for the tribe Astereae of Compositae, mostly based on determinations of meiotic material. These include the first counts reported for the genera Acamptopappus, Amphipappus, Benitoa, Chrysothamnus, Corethrogyne, Lessingia, Monoptilon, and Xanthocephalum, as well as for many species. The original counts are discussed in relation to those previously reported for the tribe; together these constitute a total of 39 genera examined cytologically out of the approximately 100 known. Because of its widespread occurrence in diverse phylogenetic lines within the tribe and the family, and because of its high degree of correlation with the woody habit, which is thought to be primitive, x=9 is regarded as the original basic number for Astereae. Within the Haplopappus alliance there is a strong secondary mode of chromosome numbers centering around x=5. The hiatus between these two modes in number is explained on the basis of ancient phylogenetic reduction in chromosome number followed by the extinction of less successful intermediate types, and is compared with similar trends that have been reported for Cichorieae. It is suggested that the family is not of polyploid origin but may have had an original diploid basic number.  相似文献

Cell suspensions of Daucus carota and Haplopappus gracilis and callus suspensions of Allum cepa var. proliferum were grown in media with and without activated charcoal. Differentiation occurred in those Daucus and Allium cultures that contained charcoal. It was shown by mass spectrometry that the media without charcoal contained high amounts of phenylacetic acid and p-OH-benzoic acid (Daucus), 2,6-OH-benzoic acid (Allium) and benzoic acid, pelargonic acid and caprylic acid (Haplopappus), whereas the media with activated charcoal did not. It was also shown that p-OH-benzoic acid had inhibitory effects on the embryogenesis in Daucus cultures.  相似文献

Reports of 209 original chromosome counts are made for the tribe Astereae of Compositae, including first counts for two genera and 46 species or subspecies. With over 80 % of the species counted, chromosome numbers are now available for all North American sections of Haplopappus. Two major groupings are apparent: one, with basic numbers of x = 4, 5, or 6, is basically herbaceous; the other, with x = 9, consists of shrubs or subshrubs. Aneuploidy is known only in the “herbaceous” group of Haplopappus, and polyploidy is more extensive there than in the woodier group of sections.  相似文献

Centratherum punctatum Cass., a herb belonging to the family Asteraceae has been traditionally used as a curative against diverse disorders like inflammation, tumor, depression, and hypertension. Though the medicinal properties of this plant have been attributed to the presence of flavonoids, glucosides, alkaloids, Vitamin C, etc., the molecular constituents of this plant and of the flavonoids that contribute to its medicinal activity have not been explored yet. This work attempts to evaluate the potential of Centratherum punctatum extract as an anti-inflammatory agent. Ethanolic extracts of Centratherum punctatum analyzed by High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) and Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) identified the presence of the flavones kaempferol, glycoside Isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside, and kaempferol-3-glucoside. The plant extract exhibited anti-oxidant property as confirmed by DPPH assay and IC50 value of 271.6 μg/mL during inhibition of protein denaturation, 186.8 μg/mL during RBC membrane stabilization, and 278.2 μg/mL for proteinase inhibition. Membrane stabilizing functions of flavones and flavones glycosides validated the anti-inflammatory potential of the extract. In silico evaluation using a rigorous molecular docking protocol with receptors of Cox2, TNF-α, Interleukin 1β convertase, and Histamine H1 predicted high binding affinity of the isoflavones and isoflavone glycosides of Centratherum punctatum Cass. The interactions have also been shown to compare well with that of known drugs valdecoxib through Gln178, His342, and Gly340, desloratadine (through Lys191 and Thr194) and belnacasin (through Asp288 and Gly287) proven to function through the anti-inflammatory pathway. This work establishes the anti-inflammatory potential of Centratherum punctatum Cass. extract as an alternative to existing therapeutic approach to inflammation through a systematic in silico approach supplementing the findings.  相似文献

The species of Gnaphalium, Helichrysum and related genera in southern Africa have been surveyed and a number of groups of allied species detected in which the ratio of female to hermaphrodite flowers ranges from a majority of female to a majority of hermaphrodite and in some groups there are even homogamous species. Thus, the failure of the old sex-ratio character used to separate Gnaphalium and Helichrysum is confirmed. The validity of these groupings has been tested by studying detailed characters such as the structure of the stereome (whether undivided or fenestrated) and the type of achenial hair, as well as the more usual floral characters. Most of these plants have leaves with flat or revolute margins and the occasional occurrence of involute margins is taxonomically important. Gnaphalium L. (type G. uliginosum L.) has been redefined to include Amphidoxa DC. and Demidium DC. (female flowers epappose) and species with more hermaphrodite flowers then female. The stereome is undivided. Helichrysum remains a massive and highly diverse genus and includes Leontonyx Cass. The stereome is normally fenestrated and the receptacle epaleate. One or two species have paleae, but Rhynea with receptacle paleate and stereome undivided is maintained. A small group of species with undivided stereomes, centred on H. marifolium D.C., has had to be retained in Helichrysum because of the existence of linking species. Undivided stereome and subglobose achenial hairs enjoin the transfer of H. vestitum (L.) Willd. and two allies, as well as the group of species centred on H. paniculatum (Thunb.) Thunb., to Helipterum, despite the lack of plumose pappus. Edmondia Cass. (H. sesamoides (L.) Willd.) with distinctive habit, involute leaves and no close relatives in Helichrysum is reinstated. Pseudognaphalium Kirp., to which only P. oxyphyllum (DC.) Kirp. had previously been assigned, is extended to include, in its typical subgenus, Hypelichrysum Kirp. and a number of American species of Gnaphalium, as well as the African G. undulatum L. and G. oligandrum (DC.) Hilliard & Burtt, and the Asiatic G. hypoleucum DC. and G. chrysocephalum Franch. A new subgenus, Laphangium, is created to accommodate G. luteo-album L. and its allies. Achyrocline (Less.) DC. has been maintained, as is done in South America, and some African species placed under Helichrysum by Moesert 1910) are returned to it. Two new genera are recognized among gnaphalioid plants with undivided stereomes: Troglophyton (based on G. capillaceum Thunb.) with about seven species and Plecostachys (based on G. serpyllifolium Berg, and including G. polifolium Thunb.). Both genera straddle the old numerical boundary between Gnaphalium and Helichrysum. The monotypic Helichrysopsis Kirp. is maintained. Plants of gnaphalioid aspect with fenestrated stereomes necessitate a further new genus: Vellereophyton (type G. dealbatum Thunb., better known as G. candidissimum Lam.) with seven species. Eriosphaera Less, and Lasiopogon Cass, are redefined and enlarged to include species previously placed in Gnaphalium. Metalasia and Lachnospermum are redefined, with the transfer of the only large-headed species remaining in Metalasia to Lachnospermum. Two new genera are created for plants in this affinity previously misplaced in Helichrysum. Atrichantha is based on H. gemmiferum Bol. and one new species is described. Dolichothrix is established for the anomalous H. ericoides (Lam.) Pers. Ifloga is briefly investigated and it is shown that the distinction between sect. Ifloga and sect. Eutrichogyne Bentham must be based on characters of the capitulum, not just on annual versus subshrubby habit. Lasiopogon molluginoides DC. (=Comptonanthus Nordenstam) is transferred to Ifloga and the structure of the capitulum in the genus is discussed. Some earlier work on this group of plants is briefly summarized, the phytogeographical interest of the proposed arrangement is discussed and some general conclusions offered.  相似文献

Pollen competition in mixed pollinations involving a time handicap was studied among the five aneuploid members of section Isopappus of Haplopappus. Foreign pollen was applied to the stigmas of a plant followed after a delay of 0–180 min by domestic pollen. Domestic pollen was prepotent over foreign pollen in all cases, but with increasing delay an increasing percentage of hybrids appeared in the progeny. The time interval required to produce 50% of hybrids in the progeny (at which time the two pollen types were competitively matched in potency) was determined for each cross. The interval is correlated with relatedness, with chromosome number, and with length of the style of the pollen parent. It can be used as an estimate of the potential frequency of hybridization in nature, with all other factors being equal.  相似文献

Variation in long-continued cultures of Haplopappus gracilis and Daucus carota has been investigated. A strain of carrot tissue was isolated that grew with a compact habit, in contrast to the highly friable habit of the parent strain. Its dividing cells were arranged quite differently than in the parent strain. Earlier work had shown that Haplopappus cultures could be reversibly altered in their pigmentation and form, by changing the culture medium. This was confirmed, and it was further shown that pronounced changes in nitrogenous compounds also occurred in response to factors in the medium. However, strains of Haplopappus were isolated which differed persistently from the parent strain, even when they were maintained under the same conditions. The variant strains, grown in the same medium, showed differences in their content of nitrogenous compounds. Stock cultures also changed spontaneously with time with respect to their content of nitrogenous substances. Acriflavine, at low concentration, inhibited the growth and formation of colonics by cells plated on nutrient agar, but, by prolonged exposure to sublethal amounts of the drug, resistant strains were isolated. Certain of the spontaneous variant strains were found to differ from each other and from the parent strain in their chromosome complements in ways that are described and to which the observed changes in morphology and metabolism of the cultures may be attributed. The variations that may occur in the free cells in culture are contrasted with the greater uniformity of the cells as they exist in the plant body.  相似文献

Pollen grains of Haplopappus and related genera in the subtribe Solidaginae from North and South America were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. The grains are consistently tricolporate and echinate. Some genera can be distinguished by pollen size, spine length, and number of spine rows between colpi. Based on these characters, the divergence of Benitoa from other members of the subtribe, as indicated by its morphology and secondary chemistry, is supported. Additionally, the recently suggested absence of a close relationship between Pyrrocoma and Oonopsis is indicated by their contrasting pollen types. This study demonstrates the potential of pollen studies in distinguishing some taxonomic groups in the Astereae.  相似文献

Understanding the factors driving the diet breadth of phytophagous insects remains one of the main questions in ecological research. In this study we explored the diet breadth and plant-insect associations in the plume moth Lioptilodes friasi Vargas & Parra (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae). This phytophagous insect was originally described in association with a single host species, Haplopappus foliosus (Asteraceae), a native shrub of the Chilean Mediterranean matorral. In order to address the breadth of host plant choice, we surveyed other Haplopappus species growing along the elevation gradient of central Chile from sea level to 2600 m. We were able to obtain L. friasi adults from five additional Haplopappus species: Haplopappus chrysantemifolius and Haplopappus decurrens from the coastal zone, Haplopappus multifolius and Haplopappus schumanii from the mid-elevation zone, and Haplopappus scrobiculatus at high elevation. Our results demonstrate that the genus-specialized endophagous herbivore L. friasi has a wider distribution and climatic tolerance than previously described. Its biogeographical range extends from the lowland coastal habitats up to the Andean subnival level. We propose that shared flower phenotypic traits such as morphology and chemical composition may have allowed the colonization of closely related Haplopappus species in central Chile, the expansion of which is limited by the harsh high elevation conditions.  相似文献
