The growth period of the Jersey and Holstein cows is made up of at least three cycles, two extrauterine cycles with maxima at about 5 and 20 months of age, and one intrauterine cycle, the maximum of which has not yet been determined. The equation of an autocatalytic monomolecular reaction was found to give very good results when applied to the cycle having its maximum at about 5 months of age. The values obtained from this equation when applied to the cycle having the maximum at about 20 months of age were higher than the observed values probably due to the retarding effect of pregnancy and lactation on growth.  相似文献

A total of 111 male reindeer of various ages was shot in all months of the year to study the relationship between the seasonal changes in testicular activity and the antler cycle. From the changes in testis weight, seminiferous tubular tissue area and plasma testosterone values and the occurrence of spermatogenesis, it is concluded that calves attain physiological puberty in their first year, during which they also complete an antler cycle. The amplitude of the cyclical change in testis weight and plasma testosterone values increases with age and can be correlated with the earlier onset of events in the spermatogenic and antler cycles of older animals. The duration of the spermatogenic and testosterone cycles of reindeer is short, and is inversely related to the long period spent without antlers. It is suggested that testosterone strongly influences the antler cycle of reindeer males.  相似文献

This paper points out the fact that the growth period of the domestic fowl is analogous to that of the mammal, being composed of three, or perhaps four, cycles; two of these cycles are postembryonic with maxima at about 8 and 18 weeks varying somewhat with the breed and two or at least one, are embryonic with maxima at 11 to 12 and 15 to 16 days of age. Hatching occurs during the first part of the second or third cycle resembling in this respect the guinea pig rather than the mouse. The velocity curves of each of these cycles are similar to and can be represented by the equation of an autocatalytic monomolecular reaction.  相似文献

The definition "physiological age" of animals has been revised. A new definition has been formulated on the basis of V. N. Beklemishev's (1962) and Ju. S. Balashov's (1962) theses as follows: physiological age of animals (= biological) is an extent of general irreversible morphophysiological change of organism during its whole life and determined by the accumulation of irreversible changes as a result of its normal vital activity. This definition is equivalent to that of "biological ages" of man. The contents of this definition is enlarged and the possibility of its use for different animals including their males is unified. On the basis of the general concept this definition is specified in regard to ixodid ticks: physiological age of hungry ixodid tick is an extent of general irreversible morpholophysiological change of its organism during the whole life and determined by the state of reserve nutrient and excretory substances. According to the amount of reserve and excretory substances in the organism of ixodid tick we distinguish 4 main physiological ages: new-born, young, mature and old which reflect general biological regularity of age development of animals.  相似文献

The influence of season and exposure to buck on the length of the estrous cycle were determined in 32 normally cycling native goats of different ages and parity. The estrous cycle durations were classified as short, medium and long. Ten goats (31%) exhibited medium length estrous cycles; 22 animals (69%) exhibited a combination of short, medium and long estrous cycles. Of the 155 estrous cycles studied, 15% were short, 72% were medium and 13% were long. Short estrous cycles were significantly shorter (P < 0.01) in estrus duration than medium or long estrous cycles. Significant differences (P < 0.05) for estrous cycle length and estrus duration were found between does but not within does. The presence of a buck for 8 to 16 h showed no significant effect on the length of the estrous cycle or on estrus duration, but a 24-h exposure period to a buck yielded shorter estrous cycles and estrus duration than found in the unexposed control group. Estrous cycles were significantly shorter (P < 0.01) in October, when rainfall is 57.9% of the annual total, and significantly longer (P < 0.01) in February, when rainfall is low at 0.2% of the annual total. A negative linear relationship (r = -0.87) was observed between estrous cycle and rainfall. Twenty-eight (90.3 %) of the short estrous cycles were ovulatory. The short cycles had a relatively lower ovulation rate than medium and long estrous cycles. The results indicate that the short estrous cycle in goats is associated with ovulation, and its occurrence in the tropics is related to rainfall.  相似文献

From measurements of the thickness of successive growth rings shell growth curves were constructed for seven ammonoid genera of different taxonomic position and geological age. All the curves have 'sinusoidal' aspect due to the alternation of maximum and minimum growth increments of the shell tunc. Growth curves made for two ammonoid shells belonging to the genera Proloxyclymenia (D3fm) and Euphylloceras (K1a) show regularly recurring minima and maxima at intervals of 14–16 growth rings. The fact that the minima and maxima of the growth curves recur exactly at intervals of 14–16 growth rings seems to reflect the relationship between the shell tube secretion and the formation of septa. This fact also seems to support the views about fortnightly or 28-day cycles in the construction of ammonoid hydrostatic chambers. By counting the total number of septa in the phragmocones, the duration of phragmocone secretion for 23 shells was estimated. Preliminary inferences on the presence in ammonoid shells of daily, bidaily and weekly growth rings are made. □ Ammonoidea, growth rhythms.  相似文献

Shell growth of tagged zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) was monitored in lakes at 3 sites over 1 1/2 years. It varied greatly with the season and was almost absent during winter months. Shell growth was significantly correlated with seston concentration, but not with water temperature. The theoretical maximum size (L∞) of the v. Bertalanffy growth equation did not vary seasonally. Tissue weight underwent a pronounced seasonal cycle. In animals of 20 mm shell length, minimum weights recorded in September only corresponded to one quarter to one third of the maxima in late spring. Tissue weight of animals from the 3 sites was distinctly different. Carbohydrate content of the tissue stayed below 10 per cent and tended to be highest in spring. Spring maxima of lipids were very pronounced. These lipids were primarily located in the digestive gland. These data were combined with data of gonad size by Borcherding (1991). Results imply that production of reproductive tissue even continues at a retarded rate during winter months, if food conditions were favourable. With poor food conditions, no production of reproductive tissue was estimated during winter; this, however, was followed by an elevated rate of reproductive tissue production in spring. Weight specific production decreased with a weight exponent of −0.24. Shell and byssus production contributed only in the range of 10 per cent to total production. Reproductive effort showed maxima of 30 to 45%. It increased with shell length at 2 sites and decreased at the other site with the largest animals.  相似文献

Cells of Anacystis nidnlans were grown in synchronous culture using a light-dark alternation to obtain synchronization. Two synchronous cycles were obtained with, decay of synchrony beginning with the third cycle. Cells of various ages in the growth cycle were treated with lysozyme to form spheroplasts. The percentage of spheroplast formation varied with age of the cells. After extended periods of lysozyme treatment, up to 90% of the cells of all ages showed spheroplast formation. Some cells were resistant to the action of lysozyme regardless of age or length of treatment. An ultrastructure study of the spheroplast was made. The electron-dense inner layer of the cell wall was removed by the action of lysozyme on the glucosamine residues of the cell wall, indicating true spheroplast formation. The photosynthetic apparatus became more pronounced with extended treatment with lysozyme.  相似文献

The magnitude of a population's per capita death rate depends on the maximum age at death and the intensity or schedule of mortality of its members. Knowing the maximum possible lifespan that an animal can achieve when raised under defined conditions makes it possible to calculate the component of per capita death rate due to longevity alone. This component is most important to slow-growing populations of animals with relatively short lifespans. Life-table experiments with two rotifer species and a cladoceran indicate that the short lifespans of these animals account for moderate proportions (up to 37.2%) of their population death rates. Decomposing per capita death rates into two components, one due to maximum length of life and another due to differential mortality of animals of different ages, may therefore be a useful way to examine how deleterious processes, such as predation and starvation, limit growth of zooplankton populations.  相似文献

Reproductive function was evaluated in ten female chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) aged 35-48 years. Forty-eight years is the longevity record for the chimpanzee. Data on cycle frequency and duration was available for seven animals. Most were cycling regularly until death, and all had experienced at least one menstrual cycle within one year of death. After exclusion of periods when the animals were pregnant or in postpartum amenorrhea, the mean cycle frequency (+/- standard error)/year was 9.54 +/- 0.20 in seven animals aged 15-25 (432 cycles analyzed) compared to 8.6 +/- 0.76 in the same animals at age 35 + years (405 cycles analyzed); this effect approached significance (p = 0.072, Mann-Whitney U-test). Cycle length of 16 cycles in each of seven animals aged 15-25 was 32.23 +/- 0.38 days. The same animals when aged over 35 had mean cycle lengths of 35.59 +/- 0.73. This difference was not significant, although cycle lengths clearly increased with age in some individual animals. In five aged animals for which mating data was available, appropriate exposure to a male occurred in 52 cycles, but only two pregnancies occurred; one pregnancy resulted in a live birth at age 38, the other in a stillbirth at age 40. This conception rate was 3.85% compared with 20% in the same animals aged 15-25. These data suggest greatly reduced fertility after age 35, although menstrual cycle frequency remained high. The persistence of menstrual cyclicity until death, which occurred due to natural causes at latest in the fifth decade, is in striking contrast to the human female in which menopause occurs in the fifth decade and death is often postponed for several more decades.  相似文献

In this study, we describe the monitoring of young broiler chicken vocalisation, with sound recorded and assessed at regular intervals throughout the life of the birds from day 1 to day 38, with a focus on the first week of life. We assess whether there are recognisable, and even predictable, vocalisation patterns based on frequency and sound spectrum analysis, which can be observed in birds at different ages and stages of growth within the relatively short life of the birds in commercial broiler production cycles. The experimental trials were carried out in a farm where the broiler where reared indoor, and audio recording procedures carried out over 38 days. The recordings were made using two microphones connected to a digital recorder, and the sonic data was collected in situations without disturbance of the animals beyond that created by the routine activities of the farmer. Digital files of 1 h duration were cut into short files of 10 min duration, and these sound recordings were analysed and labelled using audio analysis software. Analysis of these short sound files showed that the key vocalisation frequency and patterns changed in relation to increasing age and the weight of the broilers. Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation (P<0.001) between the frequency of vocalisation and the age of the birds. Based on the identification of specific frequencies of the sounds emitted, in relation to age and weight, it is proposed that there is potential for audio monitoring and comparison with ‘anticipated’ sound patterns to be used to evaluate the status of farmed broiler chicken.  相似文献

Summary A review of the maximum longevity of bivalves and gastropods indicates that a greater than average number of life spans coincide with the periods of long-term cycles in marine communities. Apparently, long-term cycles exert an important influence on marine communities by affecting the life spans of constituent species. Gastropods and bivalves are affected differently, longevities being determined by some cycles more than others in each group. Overall, molluscan longevities tend to be slightly longer than the corresponding cycle suggesting that there is selection pressure for life spans slightly longer than the cycle controlling recruitment success and generational replacement.  相似文献

Switching from one host to the next is a critical life-history transition in parasites with complex life cycles. Growth and mortality rates are thought to influence the optimal time and size at transmission, but these rates are difficult to measure in parasites. The parasite life cycle, in particular the trophic link along which transmission occurs, may be a reasonable proxy for these rates, leading to the hypothesis that life cycle should shape life-history strategy. We compiled data on the size and age at infectivity for trophically transmitted helminths (i.e., acanthocephalans, cestodes, and nematodes), and then categorized species into trophic links (e.g., planktonic crustaceans to fish, insects to terrestrial vertebrates, etc.). Comparative analyses that explicitly included stabilizing selection within trophic links fit the data significantly better than random walk models, indicating that parasites with different life cycles have different optimal times/sizes for host switching. The major helminth groups have often independently evolved similar life cycles, and we show that this has frequently led to convergent and/or parallel evolution of size and age at infectivity. This suggests that for particular life cycles there are universal optimal transmission strategies, applicable to widely divergent taxa, although the cases of parallelism might indicate that lineage-specific constraints sometimes prevent evolution to a single adaptive peak.  相似文献

The growth, selection, regression and ovulation of ovarian follicles was ultrasonically monitored in 30 Murrah buffalo throughout a spontaneous estrous cycle during the breeding season (autumn). Examinations revealed that follicular growth during the estrous cycle occurs in waves; the buffalo showed 1-wave (3.3%, n = 1), 2-wave (63.3%, n = 19) or 3-wave (33.3%, n = 10) follicular growth. The first wave began at 1.00, 1.16 +/-0.50 and 1.10 +/- 0.32 d in buffalo with 1, 2 and 3 waves, respectively (ovulation = Day 0). The second wave appeared at 10.83 +/- 1.09 and 9.30 +/- 1.25 d (P < 0.01) for the 2 and 3 wave cycle animals, respectively. The third wave started at 16.80 +/- 1.22 d. Structural persistence of the first dominant follicle was longer in the 2- than 3-wave cycles (20.67 +/- 1.18 vs 17.90 +/- 3.47 d ; P < 0.05). The duration of the growth and static phases of the first dominant follicle differed between the 2 and 3 wave cycles (P < 0.05), whereas there were no differences in linear growth rates (cm/d). Two and three wave cycles differed (P < 0.05) with respect to the maximum diameter of both the first dominant follicle (1.51 +/- 0.24 vs 1.33 +/- 0.18 cm) and the ovulatory follicles (1.55 +/- 0.16 vs 1.34 +/- 0.13 cm). No relationship was found between dominant follicle development and the presence of either a CL or a previous dominant follicle in either ovary. Two and three wave cycles also differed with respect to the mean length of intervals between ovulation (22.27 +/- 0.89 vs 24.50 +/- 1.88 d; P < 0.01) and the mean length of luteal phases (10.40 +/- 2.11 vs 12.66 +/- 2.91 d; P < 0.05). These results demonstrate that buffalo have estrous cycles with 1, 2 or 3 follicular waves; that 2-wave cycles are the most common; and that the number of waves in a cycle is associated with the luteal phase and with estrous cycle length.  相似文献

Twenty prepubertal Holstein heifers were utilized to assess plasma 13, 14-dihydro-15-keto-prostaglandin F(2)alpha (PGFM), serum progesterone (P(4)) and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) concentrations as well as the E(2):P(4) ratio during the onset of puberty in cattle. All animals were maintained as a group along with a sterile marker bull to assist in the detection of estrus. Upon detection of the first estrus (Day=O), daily blood samples were collected from a jugular vein until the heifers had completed 3 estrous cycles. The average body weight and age at first estrus were 247.6+/-4.8 kg and 304.0+/-7.5 days, respectively. Frequency of abnormal length estrous cycles was greater (P<0.02) during the first (40%) and second (35%) cycles than during the third estrous cycle (0%). All heifers had normal cycle lengths (18 to 24 days) by the third estrous cycle. Serum P(4) was greater during the third cycle (P<0.05) from Day 10 to Day 4 before the next estrus compared with the same period of the first estrous cycle. Serum E(2) did not peak until the day of estrus in the first cycle, whereas E(2) reached a maximal level 2 days before estrus in the third estrous cycle. Serum E(2) was higher (P<0.0001) 2 days before estrus in the third cycle than in the first estrous cycle. Plasma PGFM reached maximum concentrations 3 days before estrus in the third cycle compared with 1 day before estrus at the end of first estrous cycle. As estrus approached during the third cycle, PGFM rose 1 day before E(2) rose and P(4) declined, while the rise in PGFM and E(2) occurred simultaneously, with P(4) declining at the end of the first estrous cycle. During diestrus, the E(2):P(4) ratio was lower (P<0.07) in the third cycle than in the first, but it was higher (P<0.04) at estrus and 1 day before in the third estrous cycle. These data reveal a high incidence of abnormal length estrous cycles during the first two estrous cycles of the peripubertal period, and demonstrate anomalies in uterine and ovarian endocrine activity during the peripubertal period in cattle.  相似文献

Intestinal absorption of sugars show differences depending on animals age. This is demonstrated using in vivo and in vitro techniques. The age dependence relationship is present in animals of different species such as avian, rodents and ruminants. In chicken the intestinal sugar transport increases after hatching and attains its maximum capacity by the first week of life. The D-glucose and D-galactose uptake is greater in young rats, maximum at 21 days, while it decreases thereafter. The total capacity of the small intestine of adult sheep for sugar absorption was approx. 25% of that for lambs less than 1 week of age. The differences observed in intestinal absorption of sugars at different ages could be attributed to differences in sodium and calcium transport. Other authors assume that it is induced by morphological differentiation during intestinal development.  相似文献

Summary The ages of 252 mature female krill, collected from Prydz Bay in January 1985, were determined using length frequency analysis and the fluorescent age pigment (FAP) technique. Results of both methods suggest 6 years classes for adult krill. Correspondence between the ages determined by the two techniques is generally within one year. The animals were also analyzed by a computerized image analysis system, which recorded a large suite of size and shape parameters. The accuracy of discriminant functions constructed to relate the image analysis parameters to age approached 90% for the ages defined by length frequency, and 52% for physiological age.  相似文献

Cycle frequency, length, and vaginal cytology were measured longitudinally in three cohorts of singly housed virgin mice staggered across a 3-year interval. The age profiles of these parameters were qualitatively similar, but quantitatively different, among cohorts. Cycle frequency was initially low (Phase I), due to prolonged cycles and late-starting cycles, and did not peak (Phase II) until mice were 3-5 months old. Phase II lasted for 7-10 months, depending on the cohort. Thereafter cycle frequency declined steadily (Phase III). The average age of cessation of cyclicity varied among cohorts, occurring between 13 and 16 months of age. Age changes in cycle length paralleled those of cycle frequency. During Phase II, median cycle length was less than 5 days and variance was lowest. During Phases I and III, variance was about twofold greater and median cycle length was greater than 5 days. Although median cycle length remained stable for several months during Phase II, the peak period of 4-day cycles was much shorter. In all cohorts, 4-day cycles did not peak until 7-8 months of age and began to decline by 9 months. The decrease in 4-day cycles was associated with a progressive lengthening of cycles-first from 4 to 5 days, then to longer cycles. The fraction of cycles with extended cornification (greater than 2 days) increased with advancing age from less than 0.35 during the initial period of cycle lengthening to a maximum of 0.60. The observation that the initial phase o cycle prolongation was not usually associated with extended cornification is consistent with earlier evidence that this period is characterized by a delayed, rather than prolonged, preovulatory rise of estradiol. However, the increased fraction of prolonged cycles with extended cornification at later ages suggests that the preovulatory elevation of estradiol may ultimately be prolonged.  相似文献
