Xenohormesis is a biological principle that explains how environmentally stressed plants produce bioactive compounds that can confer stress resistance and survival benefits to animals that consume them. Animals can piggyback off products of plants' sophisticated stress response which has evolved as a result of their stationary lifestyle. Factors eliciting the plant stress response can judiciously be employed to maximize yield of health-promoting plant compounds. The xenohormetic plant compounds can, when ingested, improve longevity and fitness by activating the animal's cellular stress response and can be applied in drug discovery, drug production, and nutritional enhancement of diet. 相似文献

Anthocyanins from red wine--their stability under simulated gastrointestinal digestion 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The stability of anthocyanins from red wine was assessed using an in vitro digestion system that simulated the physiochemical changes that occur in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Anthocyanins in red wine were stable to gastric conditions whereas there was a small loss in total phenol content. After pancreatic digestion, the total anthocyanins were very poorly recovered compared to the bulk phenols in the IN sample, which was previously described as the "serum-available" fraction, and the majority of the anthocyanins and phenols were recovered in the OUT fraction, previously described as the "colon-available" fraction. Removing alcohol from the wine samples prior to the procedure did not markedly affect this pattern. The composition of anthocyanins in the post gastric, IN and OUT samples was analysed using liquid chromatography mass-spectrometry. The red wine used contained over 20 identifiable anthocyanins of which the main components were 3-O-glucosides of malvidin, peonidin, petundin, delphidin and cyanidin. Coumaroylated-glucoside derivatives of malvidin, petundin, peonidin, and delphinidin were observed and acetylated glucosides of peonidin, petundin and malvidin were also identified. Anthocyanins with modified aglycones similar to vitisin A derivatives of delphinidin, peonidin, petunidin and malvidin were also identified. After the in vitro digestion procedure, only five anthocyanins could be detected in the IN (serum-available) and the OUT (colon-available) fractions, which were confirmed as malvidin-3-O-glucoside and the vitisin A adducts of malvidin-3-O-glucoside, malvidin-3-O-acetylglucoside, malvidin-3-O-coumaroylglucoside and peonidin-3-O-glucoside. Malvidin-3-O-glucoside was recovered at 0.2% in the IN fraction and 0.9% in the OUT fraction. However, the vitisin derivatives were much more stable to pancreatic digestion. Assuming that the vitisin A derivatives display similar biological properties to their parent anthocyanins, their enhanced gastrointestinal stability could lead to enhanced bioavailability and bio-effectiveness in vivo. 相似文献

Enterobacter cloacae S11: T:07 (NRRL B-21050) is a promising biological control agent that has significantly reduced both fungal dry rot disease and sprouting in laboratory and pilot potato storages. The metabolites phenylacetic acid (PAA), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and tyrosol (TSL) were isolated from S11:T:07 liquid cultures provided with three different growth media. The bioactivities of these metabolites were investigated via thin-layer chromatography bioautography of antifungal activity, wounded potato assays of dry rot suppressiveness, and cored potato eye assays of sprout inhibition. Relative accumulations of PAA, IAA, and TSL in cultures were nutrient dependent. For the first time, IAA, TSL, and PAA were shown to have antifungal activity against the dry rot causative pathogen Gibberella pulicaris, and to suppress dry rot infection of wounded potatoes. Disease suppression was optimal when all three metabolites were applied in combination. Dosages of IAA that resulted in disease suppression also resulted in sprout inhibition. These results suggest the potential for designing culture production and formulation conditions to achieve a dual purpose biological control agent able to suppress both dry rot and sprouting of stored potatoes. 相似文献

BackgroundSeafood present important advantages for human nutrition, but it can also accumulate high levels of toxic and potentially toxic elements. Culinary treatments could influence seafood chemical element content and element bioavailability. In this study, the influence of culinary treatments on the total concentration and on the bioavailability of Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb in shark, shrimp, squid, oyster, and scallop was assessed.MethodsBoiling, frying, and sautéing with or without seasonings (salt, lemon juice and garlic) were evaluated. Total concentration and bioavailability of Cd, Cr, Cu and Pb in seafood after all these culinary treatments were compared with those in uncooked samples. Analytes were determined by triple-quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS). An alternative to express the results avoiding underestimated or overestimated values was proposed.ResultsThe analytes concentration in seafood without culinary treatment varied from 0.0030 μg g−1 (shrimp) to 0.338 μg g−1 (oyster) for Cd; 0.010 μg g−1 (squid) to 0.036 μg g−1 (oyster) for Cr; 0.088 μg g−1 (scallop) to 8.63 μg g−1 (oyster) for Cu, and < 0.005 μg g−1 (shrimp, squid and oyster) to 0.020 μg g−1 (shark) for Pb. Only Cd (in scallop) was influenced by culinary treatments (reduction from 37 to 53 % after boiling, frying, and sautéing). Bioavailability percentage varied from 11% (oyster) for Cd; 18% (oyster) to 41% (shark) for Cr; 6% (shark) for Cu, and 8% (oyster) for Pb. Bioavailability percentage was not influenced by culinary treatments.ConclusionCadmium concentration was reduced in scallop after some culinary treatments (reduction o 37-53% after boiling, frying, and sautéing), but bioavailability percentage was not influenced. The employed analytical method was adequate for the purpose, presenting import results for food safety assessment about the influence of culinary treatments on metals concentration and bioavailability in seafood. 相似文献

Postharvest chamber fumigation with 48 mgL?1 (3.0 lbs./1000 ft3) methyl bromide (MB) for 2 h at pulp temperature (T) ≥ 21 °C and chamber load ≤50% is used to control codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in fresh nectarine, Prunus persica (L.) var. nucipersica, and French plum, P. domestica (L.), exports from California USA to Japan. Fumigations were conducted to verify that control of C. pomonella is expected following an analogous fumigation of fresh Japanese plums, P. salicina (Lindl.). A kinetic model, based on temporal measurement of MB levels in chamber headspace and how calculated exposures varied across the fumigation trials, showed that fresh Japanese plums and French plums sorb MB at a statistically equivalent rate, which resulted in an MB exposure ca. 20% higher than that observed for fresh nectarines. Importantly, results from commercial-scale fumigations indicate that pallet shrouds do not influence the efficacy of MB toward C. pomonella eggs, as their presence did not affect the rate of MB sorption, evidence that supports the use of pallet shrouds to safeguard against the potential for post-fumigation infestation in this export scenario, and beyond. Results are discussed in the context of graduation toward optimized quarantine fumigation schedules, which will promote more strategic technical and economic Quarantine Pre-shipment (QPS) uses of MB. 相似文献

A bioluminescence assay using recombinant Nitrosomonas europaea was adopted to detect and quantify natural nitrification inhibitors in plant–soil systems. The recombinant strain of N. europaea produces a distinct two-peak luminescence due to the expression of luxAB genes, introduced from Vibrio harveyi, during nitrification. The bioluminescence produced in this assay is highly correlated with NO2− production (r
2 = 0.94). Using the assay, we were able to detect significant amounts of a nitrification inhibitor produced by the roots of Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle) Schweick. We propose that the inhibitory activity produced/released from plants be termed ‘biological nitrification inhibition’ (BNI) to distinguish it from industrially produced inhibitors. The amount of BNI activity produced by roots was expressed in units defined in terms of the action of a standard inhibitor allylthiourea (AT). The inhibitory effect from 0.22 μM AT in an assay containing 18.9 mM of NH4+ is defined as one AT unit of activity. A substantial amount of BNI activity was released from the roots of B. humidicola (15–25 AT unit g−1 root dry wt day−1). The BNI activity released was a function of the growth stage and N content of the plant. Shoot N levels were positively correlated with the release of BNI activity from roots (r
2 = 0.76). The inhibitor/s released from B. humidicola roots suppressed soil nitrification. Additions of 20 units of BNI per gram of soil completely inhibited NO3− formation in a 55-day study and remained functionally stable in the soil for 50 days. Both the ammonia monooxygenase and the hydroxylaminooxidoreductase enzymatic pathways in Nitrosomonas were effectively blocked by the BNI activity released from B. humidicola roots. The proposed bioluminescence assay can be used to characterize and determine the BNI activity of plant roots, thus it could become a powerful tool in genetically exploiting the BNI trait in crops and pastures. 相似文献

Three anthocyanins were isolated from the red flowers of chenille plant, Acalypha hispida Burm. (Euphorbiaceae) by a combination of chromatographic techniques. Their structures were elucidated mainly by homo- and heteronuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry, and supported with complete assignments of 13C NMR resonances. The novel pigment, cyanidin 3-O-(2"-galloyl-6"-O-alpha-rhamnopyranosyl-beta-galactopyranoside) (5%), contains the disaccharide robinoside. The other anthocyanins were identified as cyanidin 3-O-(2"-galloyl-beta-galactopyranoside) (85%), and cyanidin 3-O-beta-galactopyranoside (5%). Anthocyanins acylated with gallic acid have previously been identified in species from the families Nymphaeaceae and Aceraceae, and tentatively in Abrus precatorius (Leguminosae). 相似文献

Practitioners of classical biological control of invasive weeds are confronted with a dual expectation: to achieve successful
control of plant invaders and to avoid damage to nontarget plants and adverse indirect effects. In this paper we discuss key
issues that we consider to be crucial for a safe, efficient, and successful classical biological control project, and that
have also caused some recent controversy. These include selection of effective control agents, host specificity of the biological
control agents, implications of the genetic population structure of the target populations, and potential impact on native
food webs. With regard to improving the success rate of biological control of plant invaders, we first emphasize the importance
of a clear a priori definition of success and a more ecosystem-based approach to better document both negative effects of
the invasive plant as well as potential positive and negative effects of introducing biological control agents. Secondly,
pre-release impact assessment could be improved by better focusing on how to reach high densities of the control agents and
by including tolerance to and compensation of herbivory. Thirdly, we advocate a reinforced effort to integrate and combine
biological control in combination with existing or potential management options. Finally, we propose various ecological and
evolutionary hypotheses in the framework of our topic to document that biological control programmes against plant invaders
also offer a great opportunity to gain new insights into basic processes in ecology and evolution. 相似文献

Oxyprenylated natural products (isopentenyloxy-, geranyloxy- and the less spread farnesyloxy- compounds and their biosynthetic derivatives) represent a family of secondary metabolites that have been considered for years just as biosynthetic intermediates of C-prenylated derivatives. Only in the last decade these natural products have been recognized as interesting and valuable biologically active phytochemicals. Up to now about 300 molecules have been isolated from plants mainly belonging to the families of Rutaceae and Compositae, comprising common edible vegetables and fruits. A wide variety of compounds containing a prenyloxy side chain have been isolated and these comprise alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, cinnamic acids, benzoic acids, phenols, alcohols, aldehydes, anthraquinones, chalcones, lignans, xanthones, aceto- and benzophenones and other more uncommon skeletons. Many of the isolated oxyprenylated natural products and their semisynthetic derivatives were shown to exert in vitro and in vivo remarkable anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-fungal effects. BackgroundThe essentiality of trace elements in human diets is well recognized and adequate levels are a critical component of optimal health. To date, public health efforts have focused primarily on macronutrients or trace minerals that are easily analyzed. The goal of this research is to provide assessment of the dietary standards developed for Zn, Fe, and Cu in 100+ developed, marginal, and developing countries. We summarize the current recommendations and changes from the last decade, categorize and provide scientific basis for values established, factors that affect requirements, and current global challenges.MethodsThe electronic databases of Google Scholar, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched using the keywords “trace minerals,” “micronutrients, ““zinc,” “iron,” “copper,” “dietary standards” and “recommendations.” A total of 123 studies published from 1965 to 2019 were included.ResultsThe World Health Organization (WHO) has established dietary standards to address nutrient deficiencies, prevent infections and ensure basic metabolic functions; these are utilized by most developing countries. Developed countries or their alliances have established values similar to or higher than the WHO, primarily for promotion of optimal health and well-being. Transitional countries are more concerned with issues of bioavailability, food security and undernutrition. Globally, Zn and Cu recommendations are lower in women than in men; Fe requirements are higher to compensate for menstrual losses. Important considerations in establishing guidelines for these minerals include bioaccessibility, dietary practices and restrictions, food processing, interactions, and chemical forms. The global challenges of the triple burden of malnutrition, hidden hunger, increased consumption of ultra-processed foods and obesity have been associated with Zn, Fe, and Cu deficiencies.ConclusionThis research provides public policy and health professionals evidenced-based information useful for the establishment of dietary standards world-wide. 相似文献

Betalains have been widely used as natural colorants for many centuries, but their attractiveness for use as colorants of
foods (or drugs and cosmetics) has increased recently due to their reportedly high anti-oxidative, free radical scavenging
activities and concerns about the use of various synthetic alternatives. The main commercial sources of betalains are powders
and concentrates of red beet (Beta vulgaris) or cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) extracts. However, in recent years the technical and commercial feasibility of various in vitro systems to produce them
biotechnologically has been explored. These research activities have included assessments of novel approaches for cultivating
plant cell or tissue cultures, and diverse bioreactor systems for increasing production levels of secondary metabolites. This
paper reviews recent progress in plant in vitro systems for producing betalain pigments. In addition, the factors that could

Summary The inducing activity of the vegetalizing factor decreases after covalent coupling to CNBr-Sepharose with reduced binding capacity. The residual inducing activity is probably due to the release of a small amount of the factor from Sepharose beads. Covalent coupling to activated CH-Sepharose completely inactivated the vegetalizing factor, whereas the neuralizing factor retained its full activity. The biological activity was also very much reduced when the vegetalizing factor was bound to Sephadex beads, a derivative of dextran. Fully active factor was recovered after enzymatic degradation of the dextran matrix with dextranase. The experiments suggest that the neuralizing factor acts on the cell surface of ectoderm cells, whereas the vegetalizing factor must probably be internalized to become biologically active. 相似文献

Both weed science and plant invasion science deal with noxious plants. Yet, they have historically developed as two distinct research areas in Europe, with different target species, approaches and management aims, as well as with diverging institutions and researchers involved. We argue that the strengths of these two disciplines can be highly complementary in implementing management strategies and outline how synergies were created in an international, multidisciplinary project to develop efficient and sustainable management of common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia. Because this species has severe impacts on human health and is also a crop weed in large parts of Europe, common ragweed is one of the economically most important plant invaders in Europe. Our multidisciplinary approach combining expertise from weed science and plant invasion science allowed us (i) to develop a comprehensive plant demographic model to evaluate and compare management tools, such as optimal cutting regimes and biological control for different regions and habitat types, and (ii) to assess benefits and risks of biological control. It further (iii) showed ways to reconcile different stakeholder interests and management objectives (health versus crop yield), and (iv) led to an economic model to assess invader impact across actors and domains, and effectiveness of control measures. (v) It also led to design and implement management strategies in collaboration with the various stakeholder groups affected by noxious weeds, created training opportunities for early stage researchers in the sustainable management of noxious plants, and actively promoted improved decision making regarding the use of exotic biocontrol agents at the national and European level. We critically discuss our achievements and limitations, and list and discuss other potential Old World (Afro-Eurasian) target species that could benefit from applying such an integrative approach, as typical invasive alien plants are increasingly reported from crop fields and native crop weeds are invading adjacent non-crop land, thereby forming new source populations for further spread. 相似文献

The Asteraceae family comprises ca. 1000 genera, mainly distributed in Asia and Europe. Saussurea DC., as the largest subgenus of this family, comprises ca. 400 species worldwide, of which ca. 300 species occur in China. Most plants in China grow wild in the alpine zone of the Qingzang Plateau and adjacent regions at elevations of 4000 m. Plants of the genus Saussurea (Asteraceae) are used in both traditional Chinese folk medicine and Tibet folklore medicine, since they are efficacious in relieving internal heat or fever, harmonizing menstruation, invigorating blood circulation, stopping bleeding, alleviating pain, increasing energy, and curing rheumatic arthritis. A large number of biologically active compounds have been isolated from this genus. This review shows the chemotaxonomy of these compounds (215 compounds) such as sesquiterpenoids (101 compounds), flavonoids (19 compounds), phytosterols (15 compounds), triterpenoids (25 compounds), lignans (32 compounds), phenolics (23 compounds), and chlorophylls (11 compounds). Biological activities (anti‐inflammatory, anticancer, antitumor, hepatoprotective, anti‐ulcer, cholagogic, immunosuppressive, spasmolytic, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antifeedant, CNS depressant, antioxidant, etc.) of these compounds, including structure–activity relationships, are also discussed. 相似文献

AbstractMicrobiomes composition, diversity, and variability into a collection of suppressive composts were investigated for effective biological control of soil-borne phytopathogens. Pyrosequencing resulted be a reliable and faster method for characterizing fungal and bacterial microbiomes into composts derived from a varied feedstock of different composition, origin and provenience. Differences in taxonomic structure assessed by bioinformatics analyses were related to feedstock origin. Green composts derived from agro-waste and agroindustrial co/byproducts provided the most varied microbiomes either related to suppression of Rhizoctonia damping-off in bean and Verticillium wilt in eggplant, either to control of Phytium damping-off in cucumber and Phytophthora root rot in tomato. On the other hand, composted municipal solid wastes and co-composted cow manure with household waste prevalently given a most specific microbiota related to suppression of Fusarium wilt in melon. 相似文献
