The stage of ovule development at anthesis has been studied in 2002 and 2003 in 35 apricot varieties and 4 new apricot cultivars grown in a Mediterranean climate. Significant differences were found among varieties as well as a high heterogeneity of the developmental stage of the ovules examined in each variety. In general, a relative delay of the ovule development was observed, the presence of mature ovules at anthesis being negligible. In the 2 years of the study, differences in the developmental stage of primary ovules at anthesis were not significant and correlation to flowering time was not observed, which emphasised the previously reported genetic determination of this trait.  相似文献

 In many plant species with multiovulate ovaries, a considerable reduction in the number of ovules takes place. However, the underlying physiological causes are not clear. In Prunus spp., although flowers present two ovules, usually only one seed is produced. We have followed the development and degeneration of the two ovules in apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) and examined the extent to which carbohydrates within the ovule might be involved in determining the fate of the ovule. While the primary ovule grows in the days following anthesis, growth of the secondary ovule is arrested. Starch distribution along the different ovular tissues exhibits several changes that are different in the two ovules. Primary ovule growth is inversely related to starch content and this growth takes place independently of pollination since it occurs in the same way in pollinated and unpollinated flowers. In the secondary ovule, starch disappears simultaneously from all ovular structures and callose is layered at the chalazal end of the nucellus. The size of the secondary ovule does not change significantly from anthesis to degeneration, and callose starts to accumulate 5 days after anthesis. Likewise, this process occurs independently of pollination. These results are discussed in terms of the implications of the starch content of ovules in fertilization success and ovule fate. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been claimed that ovules linearly ordered within a fruit differ in their probabilities of reaching maturity. This was investigated by studying the effect the position of an ovule within the pod has on seed abortion and seed production in Bauhinia ungulata. METHODS: Fruits collected during the dry seasons of 1999, 2000 and 2001 were opened, and the number, position and status of each ovule within the fruit were recorded. A GLM model was used to assess the effects of population, tree identity and ovule position within the pod on ovule fertilization, seed abortion, seed damage and seed maturation in two populations of B. ungulata. KEY RESULTS: Nearly 30% of the ovules were not fertilized in 1999; this percentage dropped to 5% the following two years. Seed abortion (50%) and seed damage (15%) were the same every year during the study period. Only 15% of the initial ovules developed into mature seeds in 1999; this value increased to 35% in 2000 and 2001. However, seed survivorship was dependent on the position of the ovule within the pod; non-fertilized and early aborted ovules were found more often near the basal end of the ovary. The frequency of seed damage was not affected by position. Mature seeds were found mainly in the stylar half of fruits, where ovules are likely to be fertilized by fast pollen tubes. CONCLUSIONS: The pattern of seed production in B. ungulata is non-random but is dependent upon the position of the ovule within the pod. The results suggest that the seeds produced within a fruit might differ in their vigour.  相似文献

Ovule development, megasporogenesis, and megagametogenesis were studied in six cryptically dioecious species of Consolea. All species showed uniform development typical for the Opuntioideae. Ovule development proceeds acropetally, but shows developmental asynchrony across floral morphs. At anthesis, female morph ovules are functional and available for fertilization, whereas staminate flower ovules are senescing and incapable of being fertilized. In occasional plants of some species, staminate flowers may reach anthesis with a few functional apical ovules capable of seed formation. Such plants are described as inconstant/leaky males. Ovule fertility differences across morphs are interpreted as resulting from heterochronic ovule development and senescence, although variation in embryo sac longevity cannot be ruled out. Significantly, ovule abortion follows a common pattern and timing in staminate flowers of both male morphs in all species. Thus, on the basis of this uniformity, a common origin for the cryptically dioecious breeding system in Consolea is hypothesized. Furthermore, staminate expression in Consolea appears to be controlled by a common, genetically determined heterochronic ovule developmental programme affecting the relative timing of ovule receptivity and flower opening. The influence of polyamines on apricot ovary development and fruit set   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Polyamine (PA) concentrations of ovaries of two apricot cultivars, ‘S405‐17’ and ‘Bergeron’, collected at three stages of floral development, were analysed. The relationships between PA profiles, ovule development and fruit load between the two apricot cultivars were also determined. We show that PA levels vary with ovary development, depending on the cultivar. Higher concentrations of putrescine (PUT), spermidine and spermine were found in S405‐17 cultivar at all phenological stages. In addition, S405‐17 cultivar had more developed ovules and a higher fruit load than Bergeron. Moreover, the exogenous application of 10 mM PUT in Bergeron increased the percentage of functional ovules from 17.1% (control) to 33.3%. These results prove the effects of PAs on ovary development and indicate the possible improvement of apricot ovule development by their exogenous application. All these results define the relationship between PA content and ovule development in apricot. Further studies would confirm the use of free endogenous PA concentrations as markers of the developmental stage of the ovary, because determination of PA contents is easier and faster than serial sectioning.  相似文献

Field pea (Pisum sativum), a major grain legume crop, is autogamous and adapted to temperate climates. The objectives of this study were to investigate effects of high temperature stress on stamen chemical composition, anther dehiscence, pollen viability, pollen interactions with pistil and ovules, and ovule growth and viability. Two cultivars (“CDC Golden” and “CDC Sage”) were exposed to 24/18°C (day/night) continually or to 35/18°C for 4 or 7 days. Heat stress altered stamen chemical composition, with lipid composition of “CDC Sage” being more stable compared with “CDC Golden.” Heat stress reduced pollen viability and the proportion of ovules that received a pollen tube. After 4 days at 35°C, pollen viability in flower buds decreased in “CDC Golden,” but not in “CDC Sage.” After 7 days, partial to full failure of anthers to dehisce resulted in subnormal pollen loads on stigmas. Although growth (ovule size) of fertilized ovules was stimulated by 35°C, heat stress tended to decrease ovule viability. Pollen appears susceptible to stress, but not many grains are needed for successful fertilization. Ovule fertilization and embryos are less susceptible to heat, but further research is warranted to link the exact degree of resilience to stress intensity.  相似文献

Late‐acting (ovarian) self‐incompatibility, characterized by minimal or zero seed production following self‐pollen tube growth to the ovules, is expected to show phylogenetic clustering, but can otherwise be difficult to distinguish from early‐acting inbreeding depression. In Amaryllidaceae, late‐acting self‐incompatibility has been proposed for Narcissus (Narcisseae) and Cyrtanthus (Cyrtantheae). Here, we investigate whether it occurs in the horticulturally important genus Clivia (Haemantheae) and test whether species in this genus experience ovule discounting in wild populations. Seed‐set results following controlled hand pollinations revealed that Clivia miniata and C. gardenii are largely self‐sterile. Self‐ and cross‐pollinated flowers of both species had similar proportions of pollen tubes entering the ovary, and those of C. gardenii also did not differ in the proportions of pollen tubes that penetrated ovules, thus ruling out classical gametophytic self‐incompatibility acting in the style, but not early inbreeding depression. Flowers that received equal mixtures of self‐ and cross‐pollen set fewer seeds than those that received cross‐pollen only, but it was unclear whether this effect was a result of ovule discounting or interactions on the stigma. The prevention of self‐pollination by the emasculation of either single flowers or whole inflorescences in wild populations did not affect seed set, suggesting that ovule discounting is not a major natural limitation on seed production. Flowers typically produce one to three large fleshy seeds from approximately 16 available ovules, even when supplementally hand pollinated, suggesting that fecundity is mostly resource limited. The results of this study suggest that Clivia spp. are largely self‐sterile as a result of either a late‐acting self‐incompatibility system or severe early inbreeding depression, but ovule discounting caused by self‐pollination is not a major constraint on fecundity. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 175 , 155–168.  相似文献

The developmental morphology of the outer integument in the pendent orthotropous ovules of Amborella trichopoda (Amborellaceae) and Chloranthus serratus (Chloranthaceae) was studied. In both species the outer integument is semiannular at an early stage and becomes cup-shaped but dorsiventrally somewhat asymmetric at later stages. The outer integument, which is initiated first on the concave and lateral sides of the ovule, differs from that of the anatropous ovules of other basal families with the outer integument semiannular at an early stage or throughout development. The bilateral symmetry of the outer integument is shared by these orthotropous and anatropous ovules. The developmental pattern of the outer integument and ovule incurving characterize the ovule of the Amborellaceae and Chloranthaceae, which is not equivalent to typical orthotropous ovules of eudicots. A phylogenetic analysis of ovule characters in basal angiosperms suggests that anatropous ovules with cup-shaped outer integuments and orthotropous ovules were derived independently in several clades and that the ovules of Amborella and Chloranthus might also be derivative.  相似文献

The viability of ovules was studied in five plum cultivars under laboratory conditions at four constant temperatures: 5°C, 10°C, 15°C and 20°C and under field conditions over two years. During 10 days from the onset of full bloom, ovule viability in cvs ‘?a?anska Rana’, ‘?a?anska Najbolja’ and ‘?a?anska Lepotica’ was between 80–100 % at the temperatures of 5°C, 10°C and 15°C, in both years. In the same period, ovule viability in cvs ‘Wangenheims Frühzwetsche’ and ‘Po?ega?a’ was lower, but never below 50%. At the constant temperature of 20°C, all plum cultivars showed a decline in longevity of ovule viability, which was pronounced in cv. ‘?a?anska Rana’. During the 10 days from the onset of full bloom, ovule viability in all five plum cultivars under field conditions showed a high viability, which approximated to the ovule viability of the cultivars at the constant temperatures of 5°C, 10°C and 15°C, in both years. Determination of the longevity of ovule viability in the mentioned plum cultivars is of great importance due to its effect on the effective pollination period and fertilisation success. This paper deals in detail with the interrelations between the temperature effects on ovule viability, pollen tube growth and fertilisation, as well as on fruit setting.  相似文献

The stage of ovule development at anthesis and its relationship with fruit set was studied in several apricot cultivars growing in Mediterranean climatic conditions. Although generally the ovule was immature at anthesis, a great variability was found in the stage of development of the ovules from different cultivars. Considering functional ovules to be those with an embryo sac with at least four nuclei at anthesis, the earliest flowering varieties frequently showed more than 50% of functional ovules. Though these results could suggest that there is an influence of the chilling requirement on the percentage of functional ovules at anthesis, data recorded from two cultivars, ‘Goldrich’ and ‘Colorao’, with high chilling requirements, contrast with this suggestion. These results indicate that in apricot flowers the development of the embryo sac at anthesis is genotype dependent. The fact that a high frequency of functional ovules at anthesis was found, in cultivars with more than 50% of fruit set, suggests that, to be fertilised, a certain level of development of the apricot ovules at this time is necessary.  相似文献

In this study, we sought to determine if Phaseolus coccineus normally aborts potentially viable seeds, and whether seed abortion is nonrandom with respect to progeny vigor. The ovaries of Phaseolus coccineus typically have six linearly arranged ovules. The three ovule positions at the stylar end are more likely to mature seeds than the three ovules at the basal end of the ovary. When we destroyed the developing ovules at the stylar end of the fruit after fertilization but before seed abortion, there was a significant increase in the probability that the ovules in the three basal positions would produce a mature seed. The probability of seed maturation in control fruits (no ovules destroyed) ranged from 38.3 to 42.7% over the three field seasons, whereas in the experimental fruits it ranged from 64.3 to 79.7% (similar to that of ovules at the stylar end in control fruits). We did not find any significant change in the probability of seed production in the three ovule positions in the stylar end of the ovary (the positions with high probability of seed maturation) when the basal ovules were experimentally destroyed. These results indicate that potentially viable seeds are regularly aborted in P. coccineus, with seed abortion more frequent in the basal ovule positions than at the stylar positions. In two greenhouse studies and one field study, we compared the vigor of progeny produced in the control fruits with the vigor of progeny produced in fruits where three ovules (either stylar or basal end) were destroyed. We found that the performance of the progeny from the three positions at the stylar end of the control fruits did not differ from the performance of the progeny from experimental fruits in which the three basal ovule positions were destroyed. In contrast, the progeny from the basal positions of the control fruits outperformed the progeny from the experimental fruits when the seeds were produced in the three basal ovules (stylar ovules destroyed). Our findings indicate that when the experimental treatment increased the probability of seed maturation, there was a significant decrease in the average vigor of the progeny in the remaining (basal) ovule positions.  相似文献

An efficient method for the regeneration of zygote-derived plants via ovule culture is desirable for overcoming postzygotic cross incompatibility as well as for the development of certain methods for genetic manipulation. High-frequency plantlet regeneration from ovules of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and a hybrid Italian/perennial ryegrass excised 1 to 4 days post pollination was obtained by culture on endosperm-derived feeder cells. Ovules excised 3 or 4 days after anthesis and grown on feeder cells generally regenerated about twice as frequently as ovules grown directly on nutrient medium. The fruiting patterns of the rhizomatous perennial Asphodelus albus Miller (Liliaceae) were studied in five populations during 1989 and in one population over 3 years (1988–1990). Fruit/flower (Fr/Fl) ratio and seed/ovule (S/O) ratio varied markedly between populations. Although there were differences between years within the population studied over 3 years, these variations, although statistically signifcant, were less important than those between populations. Neither flowering phenology nor plant size influenced Fr/Fl or S/O ratios. Field experiments tested whether fruit and seed set were pollenor resource-limited. Hand-pollination had no effect on Fr/Fl or S/O ratios, but the reduction of resources by defoliation at the time of flowering decreased both relative components of fecundity. Manipulation of resources by hand-thinning flowers and tiny fruits had no demonstrable effect on these ratios, although brood size of individual fruits was significantly affected. It may be concluded that fruit maturation is resource-limited rather than pollen-limited. Most of the fruits aborted early in the fruiting season, and fruits with higher numbers of developing seeds had a lower probability of abortion than fruits with fewer seeds. Analyses of position effects revealed that the fruits in lower positions in the inflorescence matured preferentially. Furthermore, the two ovules in the same carpel tended either both to fail or both to develop into seeds. The plant's ability to selectively mature only high quality embryos may be limited.  相似文献

Seed production of the perennial herb Paris quadrifolia L. (Liliaceae) was investigated in five populations in northern Poland. The long-term seed production per square metre differed significantly among populations and years. Moreover, throughout the 7-year study period, 30% of both whole ripe fruits and seeds alone were predated. Variation in seed mass per fruit in both space and time was significant. Throughout the 7-year study, nearly all the marked individuals produced fruits once every 2 years. The most frequent break between fruiting was 2 years and the longest was 5 years. Only the mean seed mass in fruits of the same individual varied significantly over subsequent years. In the five populations, the number of ovules, number of seeds in the fruit and seed mass varied significantly between populations. However seed/ovule ratio did not differ in fruits in the five populations. The seed mass/number trade-off in fruits was strongly partially correlated when the effect of total seed mass was considered. Breeding experiments suggest that P. quadrifolia has a substantial capacity for both inbreeding and outbreeding. There were no significant differences in the seed/ovule ratio, seed number or seed mass in fruits produced from bagged or control flowers. However, both seed/ovule ratio and number of seeds were significantly lower in fruits from emasculated flowers.  相似文献

The histological development of fertilized ovules during fruit-set and development in pea ( Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) has been investigated. Killing the ovules on day 0 (anthesis) or day 1 prevented fruit-set and resulted in ovary degeneration. When the ovules were destroyed at later stages the ovaries developed, though the rate of growth of the pod was reduced significantly. Pollination in pea occurs normally the day before anthesis, and fertilization of the egg cell 32 to 48 h later. The first divisions of the zygote and endosperm nuclei started simultaneously (ca 48 h after pollination) but the endosperm developed more rapidly than the embryo; the embryo sac cavity was lined with free endosperm nuclei at the time of beginning suspensor elongation. Extracts of endosperm and ovule coats from ovules at day 7 after anthesis showed fruit-set activity in pea, the latter material having about 3 times more activity than the former per ovule basis. These results indicate that fertilization of the ovule is necessary for fruit-set in pea, and that compounds which induce fruit-set are probably synthesized in the ovules following fertilization.  相似文献

Plants of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) cv. Olwen were grown in an open glasshouse maintained at a mean temperature of 20oC and ovule growth and seed production measured. Differences in the rate of growth of ovules within ovaries were observed as early as 2 days after pollination. Ovules reached a maximum size after 8 days with the smallest only half the size of the largest. After 8 days, the smallest ovules became flaccid and shrivelled. Ovule position within the ovary had little effect on the frequency of seed set and although there was an apparently higher probability that central ovules produced a seed than those nearer the peduncle or style this was not statistically significant. Inflorescence position and floret position on the inflorescence had a significant effect on the number of seeds per floret and seed weight; the first formed inflorescences and the first florets to be pollinated on each inflorescence had more seeds per floret and heavier seeds and fewer florets with no seed than later pollinated florets. There were also differences between florets within the same whorl. The role of a number of factors which may influence floret site utilisation are discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Under the microgametophytic competition hypothesis, a non-random pattern of seed abortion is expected, in which only the most vigorous seeds reach maturity. In a previous study, it was found that Bauhinia ungulata (Fabaceae) exhibits a pattern of seed abortion dependent on the position of the ovule within the ovary; ovules located in the stylar half of the fruit, close to the point of entry of pollen tubes to the ovary, have a low probability of seed abortion, whereas ovules in the basal half of the fruit are aborted with a high probability. METHODS: A series of experimental fruits was generated, in which ovules from either the stylar (treatments 1 and 2) or the basal (treatments 3 and 4) half of fruits were destroyed, to evaluate whether these patterns of selective seed abortion have an effect on the vigour of the offspring in B. ungulata. KEY RESULTS: Only 53 % of the seed from control fruits germinated. Seed set in fruits from treatments 1 and 2 showed a significantly lower (33-43 %) percentage of germination; the germination of seeds from fruits in treatments 3 and 4 (49-51 %) did not differ from control seeds. In addition, it was found that the differences in vigour of the offspring are not random with respect to the position of the ovule in the pod. CONCLUSIONS: The overall performance of the seeds correlated with their likelihood of maturation. Seeds located at the basal half of the treatment fruits showed lower values of vigour than seeds located on the stylar half. The differences were more marked for early measures of fitness.  相似文献

利用人工授粉,采用压片法对大核龙眼‘九月乌’和焦核龙眼‘闽焦64-1’、‘闽焦64-2’、‘白核’等的自交与杂交后花粉管的生长特性进行研究,同时应用常规石蜡切片技术对大核与焦核龙眼的雌配子体以及合子胚早期发育进行观察。结果表明,龙眼胚珠在单核胚囊形成前就开始败育,且焦核品种(系)的败育率显著高于大核品种。不同亲本组合的授粉率存在差异,所有授粉组合在授粉36~48 h后均能观察到1个花粉管生长并进入胚囊受精。焦核品种(系)的胚胎在谢花后10 d开始败育,且败育率明显高于大核品种。受精是龙眼子房发育的首要条件,胚珠败育的雌蕊在谢花后10 d不膨大,不能发育形成焦核果实。谢花后10~30 d的早期胚胎败育是形成焦核龙眼的主要原因。焦核品种‘白核’胚乳具有成胚能力。约有24%的‘闽焦64-1’胚珠在胚胎发育过程中,其助细胞、合点端细胞及胚乳发生异常,这可能与早期胚胎败育有关。  相似文献

A ten year study on the influence of pre-blossom temperatures on the percentage of double kerneled almond fruits, under warm climatic conditions, showed a negative correlation between the percentage of fruits with double kernels and mean temperatures during the pre-blossom months. When mean temperatures for single pre-blossom months were correlated with double-kernel production, mean temperatures in December showed a much larger correlation (r = -0.78) than those of November (r = -0.51) or January (r = -0.31). Artificially induced 3–4°C daytime increases in pre-blossom temperature on the variety ‘Malagueña’ which commonly produces double kernels, caused a marked fall in the percentage of double kerneled fruits, although it did not affect the percentage fruit set. Our results may indicate an important influence of pre- blossom temperatures on ovule viability.  相似文献

Winter rapeseed (Brassica napus, cv. Samouraï) flowersearly in spring and, under field conditions, short freezingperiods can occur. Unacclimatized plants were freeze-stressed(–3°C for 4 h) at different developmental stages ofbuds, open flowers and seeds. The dissection of pistils from stressed plants showed that freezingresults in shrivelled ovules. We assessed freezing injury onthe basis of per cent of shrivelled ovules: ovule sensitivitybegins early (8 d before anthesis) but increases up to anthesis.Crosspollination of stressed pistils with non-stressed pollenshowed that recording of freeze-injured ovules is a good methodfor early estimation of the effect of stress on seed yields. On the other hand, stress does not reduce the viability of pollen,except when it was applied at the binucleate pollen stage. Useof frozen pollen x nonstressed pistils has little effect onseed yields. Freeze injury on seeds was assessed by seed filling:seeds are very susceptible just after fertilization until 20d after fertilization (DAF). Freezing seems to inhibit seedfilling. A germination test of stressed seeds during their developmentindicated that embryo viability is not affected if the stressoccurs after 35 DAF. As the embryos develop, resistance to stressincreases.
