We introduce formulae in suitable form for the numerical computation of Mie coefficients and the scattered electrical field in the general case of a sphere with permitivity and permeability . The small particle limit is also investigated. We compute the extinction cross section of a negative index sphere, as well as intensity maps. Excitation of surface plasmons featuring narrow linewidths is observed, which can be attributed to the permitivity or the permeability of the sphere.  相似文献

Background

Long-range oscillations of the mammalian cell proliferation rate are commonly observed both in vivo and in vitro. Such complicated dynamics are generally the result of a combination of stochastic events and deterministic regulation. Assessing the role, if any, of chaotic regulation is difficult. However, unmasking chaotic dynamics is essential for analysis of cellular processes related to proliferation rate, including metabolic activity, telomere homeostasis, gene expression, and tumor growth.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Using a simple, original, nonlinear method based on return maps, we previously found a geometrical deterministic structure coordinating such fluctuations in populations of various cell types. However, nonlinearity and determinism are only necessary conditions for chaos; they do not by themselves constitute a proof of chaotic dynamics. Therefore, we used the same analytical method to analyze the oscillations of four well-known, low-dimensional, chaotic oscillators, originally designed in diverse settings and all possibly well-adapted to model the fluctuations of cell populations: the Lorenz, Rössler, Verhulst and Duffing oscillators. All four systems also display this geometrical structure, coordinating the oscillations of one or two variables of the oscillator. No such structure could be observed in periodic or stochastic fluctuations.

Conclusion/Significance

Theoretical models predict various cell population dynamics, from stable through periodically oscillating to a chaotic regime. Periodic and stochastic fluctuations were first described long ago in various mammalian cells, but by contrast, chaotic regulation had not previously been evidenced. The findings with our nonlinear geometrical approach are entirely consistent with the notion that fluctuations of cell populations can be chaotically controlled.  相似文献

An important component of the mathematical definition of chaos is sensitivity to initial conditions. Sensitivity to initial conditions is usually measured in a deterministic model by the dominant Lyapunov exponent (LE), with chaos indicated by a positive LE. The sensitivity measure has been extended to stochastic models; however, it is possible for the stochastic Lyapunov exponent (SLE) to be positive when the LE of the underlying deterministic model is negative, and vice versa. This occurs because the LE is a long-term average over the deterministic attractor while the SLE is the long-term average over the stationary probability distribution. The property of sensitivity to initial conditions, uniquely associated with chaotic dynamics in deterministic systems, is widespread in stochastic systems because of time spent near repelling invariant sets (such as unstable equilibria and unstable cycles). Such sensitivity is due to a mechanism fundamentally different from deterministic chaos. Positive SLE's should therefore not be viewed as a hallmark of chaos. We develop examples of ecological population models in which contradictory LE and SLE values lead to confusion about whether or not the population fluctuations are primarily the result of chaotic dynamics. We suggest that "chaos" should retain its deterministic definition in light of the origins and spirit of the topic in ecology. While a stochastic system cannot then strictly be chaotic, chaotic dynamics can be revealed in stochastic systems through the strong influence of underlying deterministic chaotic invariant sets.  相似文献

 The goal of our study was to determine whether evidence for chaos in heart rate variability (HRV) can be observed when the respiratory input to the autonomic controller of heart rate is forced by the deterministic pattern associated with periodic breathing. We simultaneously recorded, in supine healthy volunteers, RR intervals and breathing volumes for 20 to 30 min (1024 data point series) during three protocols: rest (control), fixed breathing (15 breath/min) and voluntary periodic breathing (3 breaths with 2 s inspiration and 2 s expiration followed by an 8 s breath hold). On both the RR interval and breathing volume series we applied the non-linear prediction method (Sugihara and May algorithm) to the original time series and to distribution-conserved isospectral surrogate data. Our results showed that, in contrast to the control test, during both fixed and voluntary periodic breathing the variability of breathing volumes was clearly deterministic non-chaotic. During all the three protocols, the RR-interval series’ non-linear predictability was consistent with one of a chaotic series. However, at rest, no clear difference was observed between the RR-interval series and their surrogates, which means that no clear chaos was observed. During fixed breathing a difference appeared, and this difference seemed clearer during voluntary periodic breathing. We concluded that HRV dynamics were chaotic when respiration was forced with a deterministic non-chaotic pattern and that normal spontaneous respiratory influences might mask the normally chaotic pattern in HRV. Devising a method capable of distinguishing a low-dimensional chaotic signal that might be embedded in a noisy stochastic process has become a major challenge for those involved in time-series analysis. Here a null hypothesis approach is used in conjunction with a known nonlinear predictive test, to probe for the presence of chaos in epidemiological data. A probabilistic set of rules is used to stimulate a historic record of New York City measles outbreaks, generally understood to be governed by a chaotic attractor. The simulated runs of 'surrogate data' are carefully constructed so as to be free from any underlying low-dimensional chaotic process. They therefore serve as a useful null model against which to test the observed time series. However, despite the assumed differences between the dynamics of measles outbreaks and the null model, a nonlinear predictive scheme is found to be unable to differentiate between their characteristic time series. The methodology confirms that, if there is in fact a chaotic signal in the measles data, it is extremely difficult to detect in time series of such limited length. The results have general relevance to the analysis of physical, ecological and environmental time series.  相似文献

Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) has a gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) mechanism controlled by a single S-locus with multiple S-haplotypes, each of which contains separate genes that determine the allelic identity of pistil and pollen. The pistil S gene is the S-ribonuclease (S-RNase) gene, whereas good candidates for the pollen S gene are the F-box protein genes. A self-compatible (SC) cultivar, ‘Osa-Nijisseiki’, which is a bud mutant of ‘Nijisseiki’ (S 2 S 4), has a stylar-part mutant -haplotype, which lacks the S 4-RNase gene but retains the pollen S gene. To delineate the deletion breakpoint in the -haplotype, we constructed a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library from an S 4-homozygote, and assembled a BAC contig of 570 kb around the S 4-RNase. Genomic PCR of DNA from S 4- and -homozygotes and the DNA sequence of the BAC contig allowed the identification of a deletion of 236 kb spanning from 48 kb upstream to 188 kb downstream of S 4-RNase. The -haplotype lacks 34 predicted open reading frames (ORFs) including the S 4-RNase and a pollen-specific F-box protein gene (termed as S 4 F-box0). Genomic PCR with a primer pair designed from the deletion junctions yielded a product specific for the -haplotype. The product could be useful as a maker for early selection of SC cultivars harboring the -haplotype. A mechanistic understanding of perchlorate () entry into plants is important for establishing the human health risk associated with consumption of contaminated produce and for assessing the effectiveness of phytoremediation. To determine whether common soil anions affect uptake and accumulation in higher plants, a series of competition experiments using lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) were conducted between (50 nM) and (4–12 mM), (1–10 mM), or Cl (5–15 mM) in hydroponic solution. The effects of (0–5 mM) and pH (5.5–7.5) on uptake were also examined. Increasing in solution significantly reduced the amount of taken up by green leaf, butter head, and crisphead lettuces. Sulfate and Cl had no significant effects on uptake in lettuce over the concentrations tested. Increasing pH significantly reduced the amount of taken up by crisphead and green leaf lettuces, whereas increasing significantly reduced uptake in butter head lettuce. The inhibition by across all lettuce genotypes suggests that may share an ion carrier with , and the decrease in uptake with increasing pH or provides macroscopic evidence for cotransport across the plasma membrane.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a Levins-type metapopulation model with empty and occupied patches, and dispersing population. We structure the proportion of occupied patches according to the patch-occupancy age. We observe that patch-occupancy age may destabilize the metapopulation, leading to persistent oscillations. We also allow for the dispersal rate to vary with the proportion of empty patches in a monotone or unimodal way. The unimodal dependence leads to multiple non-trivial equilibria and bistability when the reproduction number of the metapopulation < 1 but greater than a lower critical value *. We show that the metapopulation will persist independently of its initial status if > 1.  相似文献

A 3D QSAR analysis has been performed on a series of 67 benzodiazepine analogues reported as γ-secretase inhibitors using molecular field analysis (MFA), with G/PLS to predict steric and electrostatic molecular field interaction for the activity. The MFA study was carried out using a training set of 54 compounds. The predictive ability of model developed was assessed using a test set of 13 compounds ( as high as 0.729). The analyzed MFA model has demonstrated a good fit, having r2 value of 0.858 and cross validated coefficient, value as 0.790. Quantifying foliar stable carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) is a powerful approach for understanding genetic variation in gas exchange traits in large populations. The genetic architecture of Δ and third-year height is described for more than 1,000 clones of Pinus taeda tested on two contrasting sites. for Δ was 0.14 (±0.03), 0.20 (±0.07), and 0.09 (±0.04) at Florida, Georgia, and across sites, respectively. for stable carbon isotope discrimination ranged from 0.25 (±0.03) at the Florida site to 0.33 (±0.03) at the Georgia site, while the across-site estimate of was 0.19 (±0.02). For third-year height, ranged from 0.13 (±0.05) at the Georgia site to 0.20 (±0.06) at the Florida site with an across-site estimate of 0.09 (±0.05). Broad-sense heritability estimates for third-year height were 0.23 (±0.03), 0.28 (±0.03), and 0.13 (±0.02) at the Florida site, Georgia site, and across sites, respectively. Type B total genetic correlation for Δ was 0.70 ± 0.06, indicating that clonal rankings were relatively stable across sites, while for third-year height, rankings of clones were more unstable across the two trials . Third-year height and Δ were negatively correlated at the parental , full-sib family , and clonal levels, suggesting that genetic variation for Δ in P. taeda may be a result of differences in photosynthetic capacity. We conclude that Δ may be a useful selection trait to improve water-use efficiency and for guiding deployment decisions in P. taeda.  相似文献

A novel molecular connectivity index, , based on the adjacency matrix of molecular graphs and novel atomic valence connectivities, , for predicting the molar diamagnetic susceptibilities of organic compounds is proposed. The is defined as: , where and Ei are the atomic valence connectivity and the valence orbital energy of atom i, respectively. A good QSPR model for molar diamagnetic susceptibilities can be constructed from and using multivariate linear regression (MLR). The correlation coefficient r, standard error, and average absolute deviation of the MLR model are 0.9918, 5.56 cgs, and 4.26 cgs, respectively, for the 721 organic compounds tested (training set). Cross-validation using the leave-one-out method demonstrates that the MLR model is highly reliable statistically. Using the MLR model, the average absolute deviations of the predicted values of molar diamagnetic susceptibility of another 360 organic compounds (test set) is 4.34 cgs. The results show that the current method is more effective than literature methods for estimating the molar diamagnetic susceptibility of an organic compound. The MLR method thus provides an acceptable model for the prediction of molar diamagnetic susceptibilities of organic compounds. A dual isotope approach was used to assess the relative importance of terrestrial vegetation detritus and other primary producers in the trophic web of Flamengo Sound (Ubatuba, SP), SE Brazil, surrounded by the Atlantic Rain Forest. Primary producers showed distinct C signatures and the observed values suggest that little terrestrial or bulk sediment organic matter enter the food web of the sound. Suspended particulate organic matter (POM, supports the bulk of the consumers, with some contribution by macroalgae . Consumers C values ranged from −17.4 to . At least three trophic levels were detectable in the food web. The N value of POM was , while that of sediment and detritus was . The N values of suspension feeding benthic invertebrates were 8.2–, deposit feeders 8.3–, and carnivores 10.7–. Values for fishes were for detritivore, 11.4– for benthic feeders, 12.4– for zooplanktivores, and for piscivores/benthic invertebrate feeders. Squid mean value was . There is a reasonable agreement between feeding habits information from the literature and N values from this study. In the sound, the first and second trophic steps seem to be about 1– higher than those of similar organisms studied in temperate waters and this may reflect an input of allochtonous anthropogenic nitrogen enriched in 15N from human activities.  相似文献

Microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase (mPGES-1) has been identified recently as a novel target for treating pain and inflammation. The aim of this study is to understand the binding affinities of reported inhibitors for mPGES-1 and further to design potential new mPGES-1 inhibitors. 3D-QSAR-CoMFA (comparative molecular field analysis) and CoMSIA (comparative molecular similarity indices analysis) - techniques were employed on a series of indole derivatives that act as selective mPGES-1 inhibitors. The lowest energy conformer of the most active compound obtained from systematic conformational search was used as a template for the alignment of 32 compounds. The models obtained were used to predict the activities of the test set of eight compounds, and the predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results. The 3D-QSAR models derived from the training set of 24 compounds were all statistically significant (CoMFA; q 2 = 0.89, r 2 = 0.95, , and CoMSIA; q 2 = 0.84, r 2 = 0.93, , ). Contour plots generated for the CoMFA and CoMSIA models reveal useful clues for improving the activity of mPGES-1 inhibitors. In particular, substitutions of an electronegative fluorine atom or a bulky hydrophilic phenoxy group at the meta or para positions of the biphenyl rings might improve inhibitory activity. A plausible binding mode between the ligands and mPGES-1 is also proposed.  相似文献

N saturation induced by atmospheric N deposition can have serious consequences for forest health in many regions. In order to evaluate whether foliar may be a robust, regional-scale measure of the onset of N saturation in forest ecosystems, we assembled a large dataset on atmospheric N deposition, foliar and root and N concentration, soil C:N, mineralization and nitrification. The dataset included sites in northeastern North America, Colorado, Alaska, southern Chile and Europe. Local drivers of N cycling (net nitrification and mineralization, and forest floor and soil C:N) were more closely coupled with foliar than the regional driver of N deposition. Foliar increased non-linearly with nitrification:mineralization ratio and decreased with forest floor C:N. Foliar was more strongly related to nitrification rates than was foliar N concentration, but concentration was more strongly correlated with N deposition. Root was more tightly coupled to forest floor properties than was foliar . We observed a pattern of decreasing foliar values across the following species: American beech>yellow birch>sugar maple. Other factors that affected foliar included species composition and climate. Relationships between foliar and soil variables were stronger when analyzed on a species by species basis than when many species were lumped. European sites showed distinct patterns of lower foliar , due to the importance of ammonium deposition in this region. Our results suggest that examining values of foliage may improve understanding of how forests respond to the cascading effects of N deposition.  相似文献

An improved surrogate method for detecting the presence of chaos in gait   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
It has been suggested that the intercycle variability present in the time series of biomechanical gait data is of chaotic nature. However, the proper methodology for the correct determination of whether intercycle fluctuations in the data are deterministic chaos or random noise has not been identified. Our goal was to evaluate the pseudoperiodic surrogation (PPS) [Small et al., 2001. Surrogate test for pseudoperiodic time series data. Physical Review Letters 87(18), 188,101-188,104], and the surrogation algorithms of Theiler et al. [1992. Testing for nonlinearity in time series: the method of surrogate data. Physica D 58(1-4), 77-94] and of Theiler and Rapp [1996. Re-examination of the evidence for low-dimensional, nonlinear structure in the human electroencephalogram. Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology 98, 213-222], to determine which is the more robust procedure for the verification of the presence of chaos in gait time series. The knee angle kinematic time series from six healthy subjects, generated from a 2-min walk, were processed with both algorithms. The Lyapunov exponent (LyE) and the approximate entropy (ApEn) were calculated from the original data and both surrogates. Paired t-tests that compared the LyE and the ApEn values revealed significant differences between both surrogated time series and the original data, indicating the presence of deterministic chaos in the original data. However, the Theiler algorithm affected the intracycle dynamics of the gait time series by changing their overall shape. This resulted in significantly higher LyE and ApEn values for the Theiler-surrogated data when compared with both the original and the PPS-generated data. Thus, the discovery of significant differences was a false positive because it was not based on differences in the intercycle dynamics but rather on the fact that the time series was of a completely different shape. The PPS algorithm, on the other hand, preserved the intracycle dynamics of the original time series, making it more suitable for the investigation of the intercycle dynamics and the identification of the presence of chaos in the gait time series.  相似文献

In the vegetation corridors that connect small remnants of undisturbed primary forest in the Lavras landscape (Brazil), Protium spruceanum is a representative of a mass-flowering insect-pollinated and bird-dispersed tree. Allozyme variation was quantified from five forest remnants (N = 150) from secondary vegetation corridors linking them (N = 80) to generate information for genetic conservation. The species adhered to H-W equilibrium in all fragments in most of the loci. The results indicated high gene diversity in the fragments and corridors positively correlated with the plant density (r = 0.742, R 2 = 0.551, d.f. = 4). We did not find evidence of inbreeding within fragments nor overall The genetic differentiation among remnants was low Evidence of recent bottlenecks by anthropogenic disturbance was detected in fragments (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon sign-rank test). The minimal viable population was estimated for conservation in situ, indicating fragments with possibilities of maintaining genetic equilibrium diversity in the short term (except F3) and in the long term (only F5). The ratios was also calculated to contribute to vegetation enrichment, area recovery or creation of new vegetation corridors. We found high levels of gene diversity in the vegetation corridors, genetic identity with the fragments and absence of inbreeding. Thus, our results suggest that landscape management strategies should therefore consider both the creation of new vegetation corridors and the protection of extant ones.  相似文献

We consider the modeling process of a biological agent by combining the concepts of neuroinformatics and deterministic chaos. We assume that an agent observes a target process as a stochastic symbolic process, which is restricted by grammatical constraints. Our main hypothesis is that an agent would learn the target model by reconstructing an equivalent quasi-stochastic process on its deterministic neural dynamics. We employed a recurrent neural network (RNN), which is regarded as an adjustable deterministic dynamical system. Then, we conducted an experiment to observe how the RNN learns to reconstruct the target process, represented by a stochastic finite state machine in the simulation. The result revealed the capability of the RNN to evolve, by means of learning, toward chaos, which is able to mimic a target's stochastic process. We precisely analyzed the evolutionary process as well as the internal representation of the neural dynamics obtained. This analysis enabled us to clarify an interesting mechanism of the self-organization of chaos by means of neural learning, and also showed how grammar can be embedded in the evolved deterministic chaos.  相似文献

We present long-term nutrient data on the Changjiang River (Yangtze River) at six hydrological stations and eight principal tributaries during the period 1958–1985. Three patterns of temporal changes were observed in nitrate and nitrite : minimal variations in the upper catchment area, rapid increases in the middle watershed towards the end of the 1970s, and a gradual increase in the lower drainage basin. Prior to the 1970s, the level of throughout the Changjiang River system remained fairly constant. In the 1980s, however, this changed, with the lowest values in the upper Changjiang changing rapidly to the highest in the middle reaches and then declining slowly but steadily in the lower courses. Compared to and ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) showed smaller increases or no long-term variations, while dissolved silica (DSi) concentration generally decreased at most stations. These three patterns of and changes in the Changjiang River system were reflective of the difference in chemical fertilizer use and landscape features (e.g., slope, soil type and water body area) of the drainage basins of the primary tributaries. The decreases in DSi were most likely attributed to a reduction in suspended sediment loading due to dam constructions and increasing diatom consumption. The increase in and with a reduction in DSi concentrations in the Changjiang River could have significant effects on the stoichiometric balance of nutrients delivered to the East China Sea and the ecosystem in this dynamic region.  相似文献
