Piscivory of perch can occur within a few weeks after perch hatch, leading to the development of two size‐cohorts, with the larger perch becoming cannibals. However, the possibility of early piscivory is assumed to depend on the hatch timing of the prey and predator. Two species, bream (2006) and roach (2007), were tested as the prey fish. The bream (hatching 12 days after perch) were preyed upon by the perch, leading to the predicted development of two sizes of cohorts as well as to cannibalism. With roach (hatching simultaneously with perch), however, no piscivory or cannibalism occurred and the perch population was unimodally distributed. The results of this experimental pond study underpin recent theoretical findings that size differences between predator and prey, determined through differences in the timing of hatching as well as differences in juvenile growth rates, foster the occurrence of early piscivory in YOY perch that may lead to bimodality and finally to intra‐cohort cannibalism.  相似文献

Body shape of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perch Perca fluviatilis , and number and size of potential predators (perch and pike Esox lucius ) were compared across five lakes in northern Sweden. Body depth and dorsal fin ray length of YOY perch differed between lakes, with high relative body depth and long dorsal fin rays found in the lakes where the number of large piscivores was the highest. The most slender fish were found in the lake where the perch population had the smallest individuals and pike occurred in very low numbers. The average body mass in YOY perch from the two lakes with highest and lowest body depth, respectively, were the same, which indicates a difference between lakes in the relation between growth in length and in depth. Both body depth and fin ray length were correlated with predation risk by pike. Fin ray length was also correlated with number of piscivorous perch. Selection for different body shapes can be caused by different biotic and abiotic factors, singly or in combination, and the results from this study indicates that predation risk is one of these factors affecting body depth and fin ray length in perch.  相似文献

A 2 year (2000–2001) radio‐tagging study was undertaken to investigate the movements of 51 golden perch Macquaria ambigua in the Murray River at Nyah in north‐western Victoria, Australia. During the winter of both years, golden perch did not undertake movements >5 km and displayed strong home range fidelity. In the first year of the study there was an increase in the distance of golden perch movement during late spring which coincided with increasing water temperature and river discharge. Nineteen golden perch were tracked during this period, of which 10 travelled downstream between 11 and 290 km. Seven of these fish moved to an area below the junction of the Murray and Wakool Rivers. Five golden perch travelled upstream between 13 and 35 km, four of which travelled to an area around the junction of the Murray River and Speewa Creek. The remaining four golden perch undertook localized movements of <5 km. Many of the long distance movements undertaken in spring 2000 were rapid and 53% of these golden perch returned to within 3 km of their release locations, indicating homing behaviour. Given that the rapid movements of golden perch in spring coincided with the known spawning season of this species, these long distance movements may be associated with reproductive strategy.  相似文献

Experimental studies of infection transmission via water from infected to healthy fish were conducted. The dark-brown bacterial colonies typical for Aeromonas salmonicida on tryptone soya agar (TSA) have been isolated and counted (from 3.0±0.6×102 to 3.5±0.5×105 c.f.u. g−1) from the internal organs of naturally infected (NI) and experimentally infected (EI) perch and sea trout. No significant differences in dark-brown bacterial counts were detected between EI perch and EI sea trout. The assessment and comparison of the alterations of the biological parameters of EI European perch and sea trout with bacterium Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida with naturally infected perch were conducted. No mortality was recorded in groups of EI perch and sea trout. Whereas, the mortality of NI perch (collected from the main sites of outbreak of disease) was observed from the second day of the experiments. Changes in morphophysiological parameters of EI perch and sea trout were similar. Different alterations in blood cell parameters of EI fish were observed, and the most noticeable was the decrease (P≤0.01) in white blood cell count (WBC) of EI perch and sea trout. Based on these results it can be deduced that there is infection transmission of bacterium A. salmonicida from European perch via water to other fish species.  相似文献

Synopsis I analyzed stomach contents of white perch, Morone americana, caught throughout the year in the Hackensack River in northern New Jersey. The dominant prey items were amphipods, with shrimp and fish being less important. Stable isotope analysis indicated that the primary producers of importance in the food web leading to white perch were benthic or planktonic microalgae and secondarily Phragmites australis, the dominant macrophyte in the Hackensack Meadowlands. Despite their large size, white perch do not generally appear to feed any higher in the food web than killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus.  相似文献

We examined relationships among perch population variable parameters in two types of lakes, lakes with perch (P-lakes, n?=?15) and lakes with perch and roach (PR-lakes, n?=?10) using redundancy analysis (RDA) to relate population variables to environmental factors. Effects from environmental factors were tested for significance by means of permutation tests (Monte Carlo). Three factors, pH, altitude and fraction of roach (by number) in the gill net catches, explaining 47.9% of the variation, had significant effects on perch population variables. The significance of pH was improved by partialing out the effect of conductivity and roach. Similarly, the significance of altitude was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and roach, and the significance of roach was improved by partialing out the effect of pH and altitude. When the fraction of pike in the catch was included in the analysis, the effect of roach was not significant and vice-versa, as roach and pike fractions were correlated with each other. The effect of pike was significant when roach was not included, but the effect was not as strong as the effect of roach. A biplot was constructed by plotting population variables on the first and second RDA axis, with arrows showing five selected environmental factors. Growth of 3+ to 5+ perch was positively related to pH and altitude, perch catch per unit effort was negatively related to pH and altitude, and age specific perch weight was negatively related to fraction of roach. The relationship between growth of 2+ perch and pH was not as strong as the relationship between pH and the growth of older perch. Moreover, the growth of 2+ perch was negatively related to the fraction of roach, probably due to competition between young zooplankton feeding perch and roach.  相似文献

Nile perch, a large predatory fish, was introduced into Lake Victoria in 1954. The upsurge of Nile perch in Lake Victoria was first observed in the Nyanza Gulf, Kenya, in 1979. In Ugandan waters this occurred 2–3 years later and in the Tanzanian Mwanza Gulf 4–5 years later. At the beginning of the upsurge in the Mwanza Gulf in 1983/1984 only sub-adult and adult fishes were found. The first juveniles appeared in 1985, suggesting that the initial increase of Nile perch was mainly caused by migration of sub-adults and adults. Shortly after the onset of trawl fishery in the area in 1973, haplochromines in the Mwanza Gulf started to decline. The final disappearance of the haplochromines, in 1987, only occurred after the Nile perch boom, and despite the abandoning of the haplochromine fishery in 1986. We hypothesize that the decline of haplochromines decreased predation on and competition with juvenile Nile perch and then facilitated survival of these juveniles. Consequently the immigration of sub-adult and adult Nile perch in an area may have paved the way for successful recruitment. Over-exploitation of haplochromine cichlids in the 1970s in the Nyanza Gulf, where the Nile perch upsurge was first observed, may have played a similar role.  相似文献

The effect of feeding behaviour on the prey capture efficiency of young-of-the-year European perch and roach was investigated in laboratory experiments using planktonic crustaceans possessing different escape abilities—Daphnia sp. and Cyclops sp. Two sets of experiments were performed. In the first set, the feeding efficiency and behaviour of 270 fish individuals were determined by stomach content analyses and video record evaluations. In the second set of experiments, analysis of attack-effort, which was evaluated as attack-distance and repeated strikes, was undertaken. Except for situations in which Daphnia was offered at high densities, the feeding efficiency of perch was significantly higher compared to roach in all other combinations of prey types and densities. Roach consumed significantly less prey compared to perch when feeding exclusively on the evasive Cyclops and when it was offered in a 1:1 ratio mixture with Daphnia. The mean swimming speed was similar in both fish species, but behavioural differences were evident during prey search and capture. Perch swam through the aquaria in short and fast movements that were interrupted by many stops. Roach exhibited rather continuous swimming that was punctuated by slowdowns instead of stops. The perch attacks were very intensive and repeated strikes occurred, particularly when feeding on evasive Cyclops. On the other hand, roach revealed strong schooling behaviour restricting the fish during inspection of the experimental aquaria. The distinct differences in feeding efficiency between perch and roach were demonstrated to be closely related to differences in their feeding behaviour. Discontinuous searching for prey, vigorous attacks, occurrence of repeated strikes and the absence of schooling increased perch prey capture efficiency, particularly when foraging on evasive copepods.  相似文献

As it is often not possible to immediately analyse individuals sampled in the field, captured fish are preserved and stored for later investigation. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of various preservation methods on subsequent changes in morphometric parameters while also providing correction factors to re‐calculate the original body dimensions when sampled fish are measured at a later date. In this study, juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis, 66.5 ± 10.2 mm total length) were measured directly after capture, then either frozen at ?20°C, preserved in 70% ethanol, or in 4% formalin. They were again measured after 24 h, 3 days, 7 days, and thereafter on a weekly basis for 8 weeks. Ethanol‐preserved perch greatly decreased length and weight; formalin preservation also led to a comparable length reduction, but increased the weight of the perch. In contrast, frozen perch showed less shrinkage and only moderate weight loss. Of the three preservation methods, freezing clearly caused the fewest distortions. Hence, freezing is recommend as the most preferable preservation method, especially in multi‐disciplinary studies on fish ecology; for all other preservation methods the correction factor over time will have to be pre‐determined for each species and size class.  相似文献

The theoretical limits of net reproduction rates for perch, Perca fluviatilis L. and pike, Esox lucius L, have been estimated from the upper and lower limits of fecundity, growth, mortality, age of maturity and biomass of parental stock, observed in Windermere over 40 years. Differences in egg numbers due to changes in fecundity were for perch × 1.5, for pike × 2. Assuming the same mortality, a fast growing cohort would produce more eggs during its lifespan than a slow growing, for perch × 2, for pike × 9. Changes in mortality from high to low resulted in more eggs, for perch × 7, and for pike (where high mortality includes natural and fishing mortality) × 10. Change in age at first maturity from 3 to 2 years was unimportant. Biomass of parental stock varied by × 6 for perch and × 3 for pike, and number of eggs laid varied by x2 for perch and × 5 for pike. The number of recruits at age 2 years varied by × 300 for perch and × 7 for pike. It was concluded that temperature in the first summer of life and predation were of major importance in regulating the number of recruits. Ricker recruitment curves and a simple model showed that perch, but not pike, could produce maximum recruitment from minimum parental stock. For perch, but not pike, compensatory density dependent mortality increased with increased parental stock. It was concluded that responses by the perch and pike populations to a changing environment can not be of sufficient magnitude to prevent wide fluctuations in recruitment.  相似文献

In the Enonselkä and Laitialanselkä basins of Lake Vesijärvi, perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus were abundant in the littoral and in the pelagic zones throughout the summer. In the littoral zone, roach was always more numerous than perch, while perch dominated in the open water. Intraspecific diet overlap values were higher than interspecific values. In the pelagic zone, perch <155 mm fed mainly on the cladoceran Leptodora kindtii , while small bosminids were most important food items for roach. Large perch were piscivorous, feeding mainly on smelt Osmerus eperlanus . In the littoral zone small perch foraged on zooplankton and chironomid larvae and large perch on chironomids and fish (small perch). Small roach fed mainly on bosminids and detritus, while for roach <185 mm macrophytes ( Elodea Canadensis, Lemna trisulca ) were also of importance. Detritus was more common in the food of roach in Laitialanselkä than in Enonselkä. The slower growth rate of roach in Laitialanselkä compared with Enonselkä was probably connected with this. However, considering the latitude of the lake, the growth rate of both roach and perch was relatively fast in both basins. The results indicated that in a large lake both perch and roach are able to utilize effectively the different habitats and diverse food resources. By segregation in food resource utilization they are able to co-exist in large quantities, at the same time maintaining a relatively fast growth rate.  相似文献

1. When available, Daphnia spp. are often preferred by age‐0 yellow perch and bluegill sunfish because of energetic profitability. We hypothesised that predation by age‐0 yellow perch could lead to a midsummer decline (MSD) of Daphnia spp. and that priority effects may favour yellow perch because they hatch before bluegill, allowing them to capitalise on Daphnia spp. prior to bluegill emergence. 2. Data were collected from 2004 to 2010 in Pelican Lake, Nebraska, U.S.A. The lake experienced a prolonged MSD in all but 1 year (2005), generally occurring within the first 2 weeks of June except in 2008 and 2010 when it occurred at the end of June. MSD timing is not solely related to seasonal patterns of age‐0 yellow perch consumption. Nevertheless, when Daphnia spp. biomass was low during 2004 and 2006–2010 (<4 mg wet weight L?1), predation by age‐0 yellow perch seems to have suppressed Daphnia spp. biomass (i.e. <1.0 mg wet weight L?1). The exception was 2005 when age‐0 yellow perch were absent. 3. Growth of age‐0 bluegill was significantly faster in 2005, when Daphnia spp. were available in greater densities (>4 mg wet weight L?1) compared with the other years (<0.2 mg wet weight L?1). 4. We conclude that age‐0 yellow perch are capable of reducing Daphnia biomass prior to the arrival of age‐0 bluegill, ultimately slowing bluegill growth. Thus, priority effects favour age‐0 yellow perch when competing with age‐0 bluegill for Daphnia. However, these effects may be minimised if there is a shorter time between hatching of the two species, higher Daphnia spp. densities or lower age‐0 yellow perch densities.  相似文献

Size-dependent interactions between piscivorous perch Perca fluviatilis (age ≥1 year) and their fish prey age 0 year perch, pikeperch Sander lucioperca and roach Rutilus rutilus in the biomanipulated Bautzen Reservoir indicated that the highest ratio of prey total length ( L T) to predator L T was 59%. Perch L T and prey fish L T were positively and linearly related. Perch L T was strongly related with both gape width and gape height. Within the range 80–110 mm L T, the gape height of perch exceeded gape width, while beginning at 120 mm L T the gape width exceeded gape height. The minimum, maximum and mean prey L T and prey body depths of all three prey species increased with increasing predator size, but the increases in mean sizes of perch and pikeperch as prey were less than that of roach. The low limit of the 'predation window' observed in this study coupled with results of previous studies on perch in the Bautzen Reservoir indicated that perch had a major impact on the population dynamics of both perch and pikeperch.  相似文献

The effects of two hook‐types (circle or J hook) fished with two different baits (red worms Eisenia spp., or cyprinid fishes) were examined for deep‐hooking, catch rate, mean total length, and selectivity of Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis, in the Åland Archipelago, Finland. The perch population available to hook‐and‐line gear was sampled with multipanel gillnets, with panels ranging from 10 to 60 mm in stretched mesh diameter. The effect of each hook then was examined for each bait by conditioning the size distributions of hook‐and‐line catches on the size distribution of perch collected with gillnets to estimate selectivity. The proportion of deeply‐hooked perch was 4.8 times greater for J hooks (0.21) than circle hooks (0.04) baited with worms and 3.7 times greater for J hooks (0.33) than circle hooks (0.09) baited with fish. Catch rates were significantly different between the two baits but not between the two hooks, with the greatest catch rate observed for the circle hook baited with worms. There was no significant difference in perch total length between the two hooks, but there was a significant difference between the two baits, with the fish bait catching significantly larger perch. Perch selection peaks between the two hooks differed by only 13.8 mm, but the selection peak with fish bait (236.4 mm TL) was 119.9 mm greater than the selection peak with the worm bait (116.5 mm TL). A substantially lesser incidence of deep hooking support the conservation benefits of circle hook use for perch, especially when catch‐and‐release is practiced. Using fish baits similar in size to those used in this experiment can avoid potentially harmful interactions between relatively small perch and anglers who place little importance on catch motives but whose satisfaction is still catch‐dependent.  相似文献

Diurnal variations of the total content and fractional composition of lipids in the organisms of underyearlings of indigenous (perch) and nonindigenous (tyulka) species have been analyzed. These fish species form the basis of feeding aggregations of young fish in the Rybinsk Reservoir pelagial. Stable interspecific differences in mean daily and hourly values of the content of total lipids and in the level of three fractions-phospholipids (PLs), cholesterol (CS), and triacylglycerols (TAGs)—have been determined. It is shown that the level of adipose reserves and the content of TAG in the tyulka are higher than in perch, while the contents of PL and CS are lower. Diurnal variations of the level of each of the three fractions in both fish species are similar, but the ranges of variations are wider in tyulka than in perch. Possible mechanisms for the regulation of lipid metabolism (including the participation of neuroendocrinal centers) and their similarity in young fish of different species upon adaptation to short-term changes in the environment have been discussed. It is suggested that the modern state of the zooplankton community in the Rybinsk Reservoir pelagial negatively affects the feeding of perch underyearlings and parameters of lipid metabolism in their organisms.  相似文献

The distribution and diet of age 0+ fish were studied in the deep canyon‐shaped Římov Reservoir (Czech Republic), which is characterized by a longitudinal trophic gradient. During late summer of two years, 0+ fish were sampled from inshore and offshore habitats along the longitudinal reservoir axis. Offshore catches of 0+ fish from the surface layer were dominated by roach (Rutilus rutilus ), bream (Abramis brama ) and perch (Perca fluviatilis ), whereas in the deeper open water perch predominated. Inshore catches of 0+ fish were constituted mainly by perch and roach. The proportions of roach in the inshore catches were highest at the upper and most eutrophic part of the reservoir, whereas the proportions of perch in the inshore catches were higher at the downstream areas. Total catches of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish increased upstream in the reservoir. Offshore 0+ perch were of consistently smaller size than inshore 0+ perch. Inshore 0+ perch had significantly smaller size at the upstream reservoir part than at the downstream, more lacustrine regions. The diet of both inshore and offshore 0+ fish consisted predominantly of crustacean zooplankton. Perch diet was generally dominated both by cladocerans and copepods, whereas roach diet consisted chiefly of cladocerans. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Sexual growth dimorphism is common among animals, growth rate differing between the genders. Growth dimorphism is common also in fish, but the regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. Variations in feeding rate may lead to sexual growth dimorphism in fish, the growth rate of females decreasing steeper than the growth rate of males when feeding rate decreases. Because water quality strongly affects the prey detection by fish, variations in water quality could affect sexual growth dimorphism. Additionally, variations in fish density could affect dimorphism through food competition. We studied experimentally with perch Perca fluvialitis, whether the effects of decreasing water transparency and increasing fish density on the feeding rate of planktivorous fish are gender‐dependent. We expected that the feeding efficiency of females decrease steeper with increasing water colour and increasing fish density than the feeding rate of males. Additionally, we collected field data and studied the effects of water colour on the growth rate of male and female perch. The results showed that the effect of water colour on the feeding rate of perch was gender‐dependent, while perch density had no effect on the feeding rate difference between males and females. In highly humic water, the feeding rate of male and female perch did not differ, but in clear water females showed a significantly higher feeding rate than males. The results suggested that due to their high energy demand, female perch were feeding at high rate in both water colours, while the feeding rate of males in the clear water experiments was much lower than their possible maximum rate. This was probably due to the decreased feeding activity of males to reduce predation risk. The results were supported by field data, which revealed a significant effect of water colour on the gender growth difference in planktivorous 3‐year‐old perch. The results suggested that variations in water quality may be a factor behind the population‐dependency of dimorphism in fish.  相似文献

The swarming behaviour of a Baltic littoral mysid shrimp, Neomysis integer, was studied both in the presence and absence of a predator (European perch, Perca fluviatilis L.). I performed two kinds of laboratory experiments. First, the swarming tendency of mysids and the effect of swarm size on swarm choice were studied. Second, the ingestion rate of mysids was measured when feeding alone versus in a swarm. The results indicate that N. integer actively join swarms. The avoidance of the perch by N. integer individuals was stronger when there was a swarm present. Larger swarms were preferred over smaller ones regardless of presence or absence of the predator. The overall feeding rate was similar when feeding alone and in swarm, but predator cues reduced feeding rate only when the mysids were feeding alone. This study demonstrates the capability of N. integer to assess predation risk and social context and alter their behaviour accordingly.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Opercular bones from 323 perch from the River Stour were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. Annuli were formed during May at the beginning of the growth period. Growth was minimal from October to April. Female perch grew faster than males, and the growth rates of both sexes were higher than those observed in most other European waters. Spawning occurred during late April and early May; male gonads began development in August and had attained their maximum weight in September, but the ovaries developed gradually from August until April. Immature perch had an annual cycle of condition with a maximum in June-July and a minimum in December-January. The condition of mature males and females was affected by the gonad cycle. The fecundity of Stour perch is expressed by the formula: log egg number = 2.40 log length (mm) - 1.34.
Approximately 25% of males were mature at age I and all were mature at age II, whereas most females did not spawn until age III. Ephemeroptera nymphs and minnow fry constituted the bulk of the diet of 0-group perch; Ephemeroptera nymphs, minnow fry and Corixidae were the most numerous items in I group perch, whereas older perch contained Corixidae and a wider range of fish prey species, although minnows were the most numerous of these.  相似文献

The investigation was carried out to ascertain the cause of mass mortalities in European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) in North Lithuanian rivers in 2008 that reached a maximum in mid-autumn at a water temperature of 6°C. Marked changes were detected in morphophysiological parameters (spleen-, gill-, liver- and heart-somatic indices), which corresponded to changes in haematological parameters (leukocyte count was significantly elevated or reduced) of the infected fish. The viable bacterial counts in the gill, liver and kidney of infected live fish samples ranged from 2.3±0.3 × 103 to 6.3×00B1;0.4 × 103 c.f.u./g. The BOX-PCR fingerprinting technique was used for characterization and identification of the isolated bacterial strains from liver and kidney of infected perch. The bacterial isolates were identified by sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. Pathogenic Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida has been identified as a possible causative agent of the observed mortality in European perch.  相似文献
