Trifluoperazine and W-7 inhibit mating in Chlamydomonas at an early stage of gametic interaction 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Gametic mating by Chlamydomonas reinhardi is inhibited in a dose-dependent and reversible manner by the calmodulin antagonists trifluoperazine (TFP) and W-7, but not by W-5, an analog of W-7 having lower affinity for calmodulin. Quantitation of the sequential steps of mating showed that TFP and W-7 both allow normal levels of flagellar agglutination but prevent all subsequent steps. Gametes agglutinate aberrantly and do not form mating pairs. Further, both of these drugs prevent the translocation of latex beads along the flagellar surface. Our observations suggest that calmodulin may play an integral role in the translocation of flagellar adhesion sites during the tip-locking stage of the Chlamydomonas mating reaction. Flagellar surface motility may be crucial to the transduction of signals during mating and may share regulatory mechanisms with other forms of surface motility. 相似文献

Age-specific forced polymorphism is the presence of two or more distinct phenotypes (here we consider only males) that occur in separate sexually mature age groups (e.g., horns in older males but not younger males). The life-stage morph maturation hypothesis posits that all younger males that possess a particular structure can transform into older males with a different structure, most likely via the influence of hormones. The life-stage morph selection hypothesis posits that polymorphism is due to intense selection resulting in a highly nonrandom sample of younger males surviving to become older males, thus leading to different mean phenotypes in different age groups. We conducted an extensive review of literature from the past 20 years (1983-2003) for cases of age-specific forced polymorphism. Overall, we found only a few cases that fit our criteria of age-specific forced polymorphism, and we argue that most (e.g., orangutans, elephant seals) have likely arisen via the life-stage morph maturation mechanism, but we also present several examples (e.g., green anole lizards) that appear to be candidates for life-stage morph selection. However, none of the reviewed studies provided enough information (e.g., age of morphs, growth patterns of the morphological structure) to definitively invoke either of the two mechanisms. We suggest that age-specific forced polymorphism is more common than reflected in this review and that future studies should gather demographic and laboratory data that will directly compare the life-stage morph maturation and life-stage morph selection hypotheses. 相似文献

The set of mating behaviours expressed by an individual may depend upon the state of that individual and local environmental conditions. Understanding how these factors affect mating behaviours may elucidate how a mating system operates, and its consequences for the form and strength of sexual selection. We conducted two experiments on the water striderGerris buenoi to (1) determine the effect of hunger on the mating behaviour of both sexes and (2) examine female choice for large males. In our first experiment, we manipulated hunger (20 h starvation) in both sexes and recorded mating, male harassment, copulation duration and guarding duration. We predicted that hunger would increase female reluctance to mate because mating conflicts with foraging. Female hunger (20 h starvation) decreased mating rate by two-thirds but had no significant effect on male mating behaviour. In a second experiment, we examined the effect of female hunger, and resulting reluctance, on sexual selection for large male size. Hungry females (5 h starvation) were placed with two fed males (one large, one small) and we recorded male premating and mating behaviours. We observed significant large-male mating advantage when females were hungry, but not when satiated. Mating efforts (harassment, premating struggles) were similar for both male phenotypes in both female hunger treatments, suggesting that the mating advantage of large males resulted from increased reluctance of hungry females to mate. Neither male body size nor female hunger explained a significant amount of variation in copulation duration or guarding duration. We discuss our results in light of two competing hypotheses for female choice (active and passive) on male body size and suggest that passive choice for large males acts in this system. Sperm from mice of the PL/J strain have a high frequency of sperm-head morphology abnormalities. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) methods revealed that PL/J sperm are also characterized by a high frequency of aneuploidy. The traits of abnormal sperm head morphology and aneuploidy are associated with numerous meiotic abnormalities. Spermatocytes of PL/J mice exhibit chromosome asynapsis during meiotic prophase as well as reduced crossing over, revealed by analysis of both MLH1 foci in pachytene spermatocytes and chiasmata seen at the first meiotic metaphase. During the first meiotic division, roughly one-third of the PL/J spermatocytes exhibit aberrant spindle morphology, with abnormalities including monopolar spindles, split spindle poles, and incomplete spindle formation and centrosomal abnormalities. F1 progeny of a cross between PL/J and C57BL/6J did not exhibit a high frequency of either sperm aneuploidy or sperm head morphology aberrations, as would be expected if the PL/J traits were dominant. Among progeny of a backcross of F1 mice to PL/J, none of 16 males assessed exhibited elevated frequencies of sperm head morphology abnormalities. Four of the individuals exhibited elevated sperm aneuploidy, but not at the levels of the PL/J parents. Thus, it is likely that the aberrant PL/J traits are due to several genes and/or modifiers affecting the generation of both sperm aneuploidy and abnormal sperm head morphology. 相似文献

One of the most studied life-history trade-offs is that resulting from the cost of reproduction: a trade-off arises when reproduction diverts limited resources from other life-history traits. We examine the cost of reproduction in male, and the effect of male mating status on female Callosobruchus maculatus seed beetles. Cost of reproduction for male C. maculatus was manifested as reduced longevity. There was also a positive relationship between male body size and male longevity. Females mated to males that had already copulated twice did not live as long as females mated to males that had copulated once or not at all. The third copulation of males also lasted longer than the two previous ones. We conclude that even though the cost of reproduction for males has been studied much less than that in females, there is growing evidence that male reproductive effort is more complex than has traditionally been thought. 相似文献

The effect of artificial Spartina structure on the predation rates of four estuarine fish on juvenile brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus Ives) was examined under laboratory conditions. Vegetative structure reduced predation rates of pinfish and Atlantic croaker but did not affect predation rates of red drum and speckled trout. Pinfish and Atlantic croaker were inefficient predators, needing several strikes before successfully capturing prey. This inefficiency, necessitating repeated detection of prey organisms, probably contributed to the reduced predation rates by these fish in vegetated treatments. Although pinfish and speckled trout appeared to be strictly visual feeders, Atlantic croaker and red drum could apparently detect and feed upon shrimp through other sensory mechanisms. Differences in the mode of feeding among the fish, however, did not appear to be related to the effect of vegetative structure on predation rates. Over all of the experiments, predation rates on shrimp (50–69 mm) ranged between ≈2 and 13 shrimp·fish?1·day?1, and there was a positive relationship between the number of shrimp eaten and the size of the predator. 相似文献

The Caribbean fruit fly, Anastrepha suspensa (Loew), like many polyphagous tephritids, exhibits a lek polygyny mating system, and juvenile hormone levels and adult diet are known to have important positive effects on male sexual success. Among the potential components of this success are male lek tenure and female response to the sexual signals of lekking males. Male A. suspensa where submitted to four different treatments: (M+P+) application of juvenile hormone analog, methoprene (M) and sugar and hydrolyzed yeast as adult food; (M+P−) application of M and sugar as adult food; (M−P+) no application of M and sugar and hydrolyzed yeast as adult food; and (M−P−) no application of M and sugar as adult food. M+P+ males initiated and participated more in aggregations, mated more frequently, and occupied the lek centers more often. They also had fewer unsuccessful mounting attempts than males in all the other treatments. M+P+ males also emitted pheromones and acoustically signaled more often and attracted more females than males in other treatments. Male sexual performance was improved due to methoprene, protein supply, and the interaction of methoprene and protein for most of the parameters. Since the success of the sterile insect technique (SIT), a commonly employed technique to control pest tephritids, requires the release of males that can form leks, engage in agonistic sexual interactions, and attract females, these positive effects of protein and methoprene may substantially improve SIT programs. 相似文献
