The influence of host deprivation and egg expenditure on the host location behavior ofMastrus ridibundus was evaluated under controlled conditions in a walk-in field cage in a greenhouse. The activity of females peaked at a temperature of 25–27°C generating two peaks of activity through the day. Increased host deprivation did not influence patch and host-finding success: females responded to host stimuli even after 9 days of host deprivation. In contrast, the longer M. ridibundus was exposed to excess hosts, the greater was the reduction in patch and host-finding success. Egg depletion expressed as the percentage of realized lifetime fecundity expended, rather than egg load, offered a good match for this decline. These results are discussed in the context of biological control introductions and the choice of pre-release treatment.  相似文献

1. Oviposition behaviour and host size ? fitness relationships of a gregarious, idiobiont ectoparasitoid, Elachertus cacoeciae (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), were studied by implanting one fourth‐, fifth‐, and sixth‐instar spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) larva per tree in a stand where the density of the wild C. fumiferana population was low. 2. Development time of E. cacoeciae larvae was quickest on fifth‐instar C. fumiferana larvae, which were the preferred hosts for oviposition. 3. Brood sex ratio (proportion of females) was related positively to increasing C. fumiferana instar, indicating that more females were laid on larger hosts. 4. Parasitoid offspring size increased with increasing C. fumiferana instar and decreased with increasing brood size on smaller hosts. Female but not male size was related positively to increasing brood sex ratio (proportion of females). 5. Under laboratory conditions, parasitoid longevity was related positively to parasitoid size and realised lifetime fecundity, and clutch size was related positively to host size. 6. These results suggest that selection of intermediate‐sized C. fumiferana larvae may be adaptive for E. cacoeciae.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The Lack clutch size theory predicts how many eggs a female should lay to maximise her fitness gain per clutch. However, for parasitoids that lay multiple clutches it can overestimate optimal clutch size because it does not take into account the future reproductive success of the parasitoid.
2. From egg-limitation and time-limitation models, it is theoretically expected that (i) clutch size decreases with age if host encounter rate is constant, and (ii) clutch size should increase with host deprivation and hence with age in host-deprived individuals.
3. Clutch sizes produced by ageing females of the koinobiont gregarious parasitoid Microplitis tristis Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) that were provided daily with hosts, and of females ageing with different periods of host deprivation were measured.
4. Contrary to expectations, during the first 2 weeks, clutch size did not change with the age of the female parasitoid, neither with nor without increasing host-deprivation time.
5. After the age of 2 weeks, clutch size decreased for parasitoids that parasitised hosts daily. The decrease was accompanied by a strong decrease in available eggs. However, a similar decrease occurred in host-deprived parasitoids that did not experience egg depletion, suggesting that egg limitation was not the only factor causing the decrease in clutch size.
6. For koinobiont parasitoids like M. tristis that have low natural host encounter rates and short oviposition times, the costs of reproduction due to egg limitation, time limitation, or other factors are relatively small, if the natural lifespan is relatively short.
7. Koinobiont parasitoid species that in natural situations experience little variation in host density and host quality might not have strongly evolved the ability to adjust clutch size.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. Current models of insect oviposition predict that clutch size in parasitoids should correlate with host size, with a continuum from solitary species at one end to large gregarious broods at the other. This prediction is tested for the genus Apanteles (sensu lato).
2. The distribution of brood sizes in Apanteles is bimodal, with peaks at one (solitary species) and at about twenty (gregarious species).
3. Brood size of gregarious species correlates with host size, but when a measure of the total volume of a parasitoid brood is plotted against host size, solitary species do not lie on the same regression slope as gregarious species.
4. There is a relative shortage of gregarious species on small hosts, and a relative excess of solitary species on large hosts. Solitary species on large hosts do not fully consume the host resource.
5. The possible role of evolutionary constraints to adaptive progeny allocation in Apanteles is discussed.  相似文献

We developed a dynamic state variable model for studying optimal host‐handling strategies in the whitefly parasitoid Encarsia formosa Gahan (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). We assumed that (a) the function of host feeding is to gain nutrients that can be matured into eggs, (b) oögenesis is continuous and egg load dependent, (c) parasitoid survival is exponentially distributed and (d) parasitoids encounter hosts randomly, are autogenous and have unlimited access to non‐host food sources to obtain energy for maintenance and activity. The most important prediction of the model is that host feeding is maladaptive under field conditions of low host density (0.015 cm?2) and short parasitoid life expectancy (maximum reproductive period of 7 d). Nutrients from the immature stage that can be matured into eggs are sufficient to prevent egg limitation. Both host density and parasitoid life expectancy have a positive effect on the optimal host‐feeding ratio. Parasitoids that make random decisions gain on average only 35% (0.015 hosts cm?2) to 60% (1.5 hosts cm?2) of the lifetime reproductive success of parasitoids that make optimal decisions, independent of their life expectancy. Parameters that have a large impact on lifetime reproductive success and therefore drive natural selection are parasitoid life expectancy and the survival probability of deposited eggs (independent of host density), the number of host encounters per day (when host density is low) and the egg maturation rate and number of host types (when host density is high). Explaining the evolution of host‐feeding behaviour under field conditions requires field data showing that life expectancy in the field is not as short as we assumed, or may require incorporation of variation in host density. Incorporating variation in walking speed, parasitised host types or egg resorption is not expected to provide an explanation for the evolution of host‐feeding behaviour under field conditions.  相似文献

Thus far, few studies have compared life-history traits amongst secondary parasitoids attacking and developing in cocoons of their primary parasitoid hosts. This study examines development and reproduction in Lysibia nana Gravenhorst and Acrolyta nens Hartig (both Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), two related and morphologically similar secondary parasitoids that attack pupae of the gregarious endoparasitoid, Cotesia glomerata L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). On black mustard, Brassica nigra L. (Brassicaceae) plants in a field plot, adults of L. nana and A. nens frequently emerged from the same cocoon broods of C. glomerata . Based on similarities in their phylogeny and morphology, it was hypothesized that both species would exhibit considerable overlap in other life-history traits. In both L. nana and A. nens , adult wasp size increased with host cocoon mass at parasitism, although L. nana wasps were slightly larger than A. nens wasps, and completed their development earlier. Adult females of both species emerged with no eggs but matured eggs at similar rates over the following days. When provided with 20 host cocoons daily, fecundity in female L. nana was slightly more skewed towards early life than in A. nens , although lifetime fecundity did not differ between the two species. Longevity was significantly reduced in females of both species that were provided with hosts. Both parasitoids were found to exhibit strong similarities in life-history and development traits and in their ecological niche, thereby supporting our general hypothesis. Competition between L. nana and A. nens is presumably diffused because their preferred host ( C. glomerata ) is relatively abundant in open habitats.  相似文献

1. In studying the evolution of life-history strategies in parasitoids, considerable attention has been paid to the relationship between host quality and parasitoid fitness. Various workers have reported that host quality influences parasitoid size, development time, and survival. Because body size is frequently correlated with fecundity, longevity, and host-finding ability in parasitoids, this parameter is usually considered to be the main target of selection. 2. In koinobiont parasitoids that consume the entire host before pupation, adult parasitoid size and development time are often strongly correlated with host size at the time when it is developmentally arrested through destructive feeding by the parasitoid larva. 3. Here, a mathematical model is proposed to describe the larval feeding behaviour of the solitary koinobiont endoparasitoid Venturia canescens in four larval stadia of its host Plodia interpunctella. In particular, the model describes how adult size, represented by an exponential growth rate, and development time are traded off when the parasitoid develops in nutritionally suboptimal second stadium hosts. 4. Using a graphical model, the different conditions faced by V. canescens during development in various host species of greatly differing mass are illustrated. 5. It is argued that the relative importance of size and development time on parasitoid fitness is determined by ecological and biological characteristics of both host and parasitoid, and it is suggested that there may be correlations between life-history traits and host-utilisation strategies among koinobionts.  相似文献

We used field observations of freely foraging Aphytis aonidiae parasitoids in conjunction with results of laboratory studies of A. aonidiae and other Aphytis species to simulate lifetime patterns of behavior and reproduction. Field observations provided estimates of encounter rates with three classes of hosts, the mortality rate from predation on adult parasitoids, and host-handling times for oviposition and host feeding by adult wasps. A series of physiological parameters, including the egg maturation rate and the value of host-feeding meals, were estimated from previously published studies. Plasticity in parasitoid behavior was incorporated in two ways. For one set of simulations we used a behavioral rule derived empirically from observations of parasitoids made in the field, and for another we used a dynamic state-variable model to generate a set of behavioral rules that maximize lifetime reproductive success. As was expected, the empirically derived rule led to better matches with field observations than did simulations using the output of the dynamic model. Projections of lifetime reproductive success in the field ranged between three and 37 eggs within the 95% confidence intervals of the mortality rate and host encounter rate and depending on which behavioral rule was used. Lifetime reproductive success from the simulation with central estimates of the mortality and host encounter rates that incorporated the empirical rule was 6.25 eggs. Using the empirical versus the theoretical rule in the simulations led to a 10%-30% decline in projections of lifetime reproductive success, depending on mortality and host encounter rates. Regardless of the behavioral rule, the simulations underscored the observation that the host encounter rate was greater than the egg maturation rate. The overall oviposition rate was sufficiently high to lead to daily episodes of temporary egg limitation during which parasitoids must mature an egg before being able to oviposit.  相似文献

Several proxies can be used to estimate the fitness of egg parasitoids: size, longevity, fecundity, mating ability and vagility. All these proxies are positively correlated with the lifetime fitness gain of an individual. However, the phenotypic plasticity, which is the ability of a genotype to produce distinct phenotypes depending on environmental conditions, may alter the value of these proxies. Host related factors (host species and quality), competition and duration of development will influence the proxies expressed by a given phenotype. When the phenotype is modified by the temperature at which an individual develops, the resulting phenotype will vary based on the life history strategy of the parasitoid. While in koinobiont species an increase in size is positively correlated with longevity and fecundity, the reverse occurs with idiobiont parasitoids. Using size as a proxy could thus be misleading depending on the factors that influence the size of the adult.  相似文献

We explore the relationship between clutch size behaviour and the likelihood of egg limitation in insects with parasitoid-like life histories. We compare the incidence of egg limitation in insects that produce clutch sizes consistent with maximizing fitness per host (i.e. the single host maximum, or Lack clutch size) with insects exhibiting two types of dynamic behaviour. In the first case, insects produce clutch sizes according to a rule that specifies a negative relationship between egg complement and clutch size; in the second case, clutch size is determined by both egg complement and the host encounter rate using a dynamic state-variable model. The analyses are an extension of models presented by Rosenheim (1996), which predicted a strong positive relationship between the risk of egg limitation and the host encounter rate in the absence of dynamic oviposition behaviour. Our results are consistent with Rosenheim's, but they show that dynamic behaviour can greatly reduce th e risk of egg limitation and weaken the relationship between the host encounter rate and egg limitation.  相似文献

Host manipulation by parasites not only captures the imagination but has important epidemiological implications. The conventional view is that parasites face a trade-off between the benefits of host manipulation and their costs to fitness-related traits, such as longevity and fecundity. However, this trade-off hypothesis remains to be tested. Dinocampus coccinellae is a common parasitic wasp of the spotted lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata. Females deposit a single egg in the haemocoel of the host, and during larval development the parasitoid feeds on host tissues. At the prepupal stage, the parasitoid egresses from its host by forcing its way through the coccinellid's abdominal segments and begins spinning a cocoon between the ladybird's legs. Remarkably, D. coccinellae does not kill its host during its development, an atypical feature for parasitoids. We first showed under laboratory conditions that parasitoid cocoons that were attended by a living and manipulated ladybird suffered less predation than did cocoons alone or cocoons under dead ladybirds. We then demonstrated that the length of the manipulation period is negatively correlated with parasitoid fecundity but not with longevity. In addition to documenting an original case of bodyguard manipulation, our study provides the first evidence of a cost required for manipulating host behaviour.  相似文献

Offspring survival probability usually decreases with hatching order, especially in species with brood reduction. Brood reduction in combination with a sex difference in embryonic period (the time between laying and hatching of an egg) can potentially have a profound effect on sex allocation, with higher investment in chicks of the early hatching sex because they are more likely to survive to fledge. Two recent studies reported sex differences in the embryonic period, but compared embryonic period between, rather than within, clutches, which does not control for possible environmental effects on both clutch sex ratio and embryonic period. We compared the embryonic period of sons and daughters within clutches in jackdaws Corvus monedula and black‐headed gulls Larus ridibundus, two species with frequent brood reduction, and found no sexual difference in embryonic period. This suggests that sex allocation is not affected by sex differences in embryonic period in these species, but more studies are required to verify whether this is a general pattern.  相似文献

Sclerodermus pupariae Yang et Yao (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) is used as a potential biocontrol agent for several buprestid and cerambycid larvae. This study aimed to enhance the efficiency of mass‐rearing of this parasitoid by investigating the fitness gain of this bethylid wasp, including the proportion of successful parasitism and development, brood size, sex ratio, proportion of winged female offspring, body size and longevity of female offspring, under eight different maternal parasitoid density treatments using Thyestilla gebleri Faldermann as host in the laboratory. The results indicated that the foundress densities did not affect the parasitism or emergence rate of this parasitoid. Brood size of the parasitoids increased significantly when the number of maternal wasps ranged from one to four. However, further increases in foundress number did not affect the parasitoid brood size. The sex ratios of S. pupariae were always female‐biased. The proportions of male in the progeny colonies were <10% throughout all experimental treatments. The percentage of winged female progeny was not significantly influenced by the density of adult maternal parasitoids. Body sizes of parasitoids significantly declined with increasing maternal parasitoid densities. Although the parasitoid body size reduced when maternal wasp number was higher, it could be compromised by the relatively higher number of female offspring produced. Further, more than 70% of the parasitoids remained alive when they were stored at 12°C for four months throughout the experiments. These findings suggest that exposure of four female wasps to a single host larva would result in the highest fitness of S. pupariae. Our findings might provide a new approach to enhance the efficiency of mass‐rearing of this bethylid wasp.  相似文献

Host age preference of the hyperparasitoid,Eurytoma sp., attacking the cocoons of the gregarious parasitoid wasp,Cotesia (=Apanteles) glomerata L., was investigated in the field and laboratory. Under laboratory conditions of 20°C and L16D8 photoperiod.Eurytoma sp. parasitized cocoons of all ages, laying 7 to 10 eggs per cluster during a 24 h period. Field-collected cocoons also indicated that the host was parasitized regardless of its developmental stage. However, the mortality ofEurytoma sp. laid in cocoons on the day before host emergence was as high as 60%. Furthermore, progeny sex ratio (proportion males) reached 0.708 in eggs laid in the oldest cocoon clusters, whereas that for younger cocoons was strongly female-biased. Together, these facts suggest that older hosts are less suitable forEurytoma sp. than are younger ones, even though there was no significant decreasing tendency in the number of parasitized cocoons per cluster. In addition, the effect of cocoon position within a cluster was apparent, outer cocoons being more easily parasitized than inner ones. A comparative study was made of the fertility, fecundity and longevity ofTrichogramma confusum Vigg. reared in the laboratory on eggs ofCorcyra cephalonica St., vs. a wild type population of the same species. Laboratory reared females showed a significantly higher degree of sterility than wild-type females while sterility amongst males did not differ significantly. Under laboratory conditions, laboratory reared females lived longer than wild-type females but produced fewer progeny as indicated by life-table data suggesting that their “effective” life is shorter. The high precentage of sterility amongst laboratory reared females should be taken into account when making inundative field releases. As size of the host may influence the fecundity and behaviour of laboratory rearedTrichogramma, the use of a suitable host which produces larger eggs would have to be considered in any mass-breeding programme.  相似文献

The effect of competition between ovipositing females on theirclutch size decisions is studied in animals that lay their eggsin discrete units of larval food (hosts). In such species theeffect of competition depends on the form of the larval competitionwithin such units. In insect parasitoids, there might eitherbe contest (solitary parasitoids) or scramble competition (gregariousparasitoids) between larvae within a host For gregarious parasitoids,a decreasing clutch size with increasing competition betweenforagers is predicted. This prediction is tested in experimentsusing the parasitoid Aphaertta minuta. Parasitoids were eitherkept alone or in groups of four before the experiment, in whichthey were introduced singly in a patch containing unparasitizedhosts. Animals kept together laid on average clutches of 0.74eggs smaller than females kept alone (average clutch is 5.3),thereby confirming the prediction. Clutch size decreased withencounter number, which might be due to the adjustment of thefemale's estimate of the encounter rate with hosts. Finally,the results are compared with those reported for solitary parasitoids(that have scramble larval competition), for which it is predictedthat the clutch size will increase with increasing levels ofcompetition between females.  相似文献

Parent-offspring conflict over clutch size may lead to siblicidal behavior between juveniles. In parasitoid wasps, selection for siblicide in small broods is predicted to produce a dearth of gregarious broods with few eggs. Here we document the clutch size distribution in the Bethylidae, a large family of aculeate parasitoids. Small gregarious clutches are the most common. Further data suggest that the most common gregarious clutches in the parasitoid Hymenoptera as a whole contain only a few eggs. Across bethylid species, both clutch size and wasp size increase with host size. Within genera clutch size is more closely related to host size, but between genera or larger clades wasp size is more closely related to host size. The volume of the emerging wasp brood does not depend on whether a species lays single- or multiple-egg clutches once host size is taken into account. These data suggest that clutch size in bethylid wasps is best described by traditional optimality models and that siblicide plays little role in this and possibly other families. We propose several ecological reasons for the rarity of siblicide in bethylids: ectoparasitism, idiobiosis, and a suite of characteristics associated with high within-brood relatedness.  相似文献

The rearing ofRaphitelus maculatus Walker, which oviposits through the bark onto beetle larvae has been carry out under standard laboratory conditions of 22 ± 2°C, 60% R.H. and photoperiod 16L∶8D. The host (Phloeotribus scarabaeoides Bernard) has been reared by cutting fresh branches of living olive tree on which they overwinter as adults. The effect of several rearing conditions (feeding conditions) on longevity and fecundity has been tested. The time of parasitoid and host development as well as the periods of emergence from the infested cut branches has been determined. It has been noted that both longevity and fecundity are influenced by the feeding conditions, reaching toca. double value when parasitoids were fully fed. Under standard rearing conditionsR. maculatus completes its life cycle in 17–18 days depending on sex, whereasP. scarabaeoides takes about 48 days. Finally 3 emergence periods has been observed from which the 1st is the most important and the 3rd is always the less significantly one, provided that the emerging brood cannot oviposits easier than the parents due to a decrease on host larvae proportion as well as on parasitoid fecundity.   相似文献

The growth pattern and mortality of young Pied Flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca were studied to focus on the mechanisms and constraints behind the widely studied optimization of clutch size. The clutch sizes were modified, and the growth and survival of chicks from different clutch sizes were monitored along with the prevailing weather during the nestling period to detect the effect of weather on reproductive success. The weather conditions during the feeding period of the nestlings varied within a season as well as between breeding seasons. The prevailing weather markedly affected both the growth rate and the survival of chicks, yet, the effects of weather on growth were not greater in enlarged clutches. The impact of adverse weather was more pronounced in the later phases of nesting, when the food demand of a brood was highest. Brood reduction and total nest losses were more likely during extensive rainfall during the nestling phase and also in the enlarged clutches. Thus, weather is a very important determinant of reproductive success in this species. Weather conditions during the breeding season are unpredictable, however, and therefore brood reduction through sibling competition is a mechanism whereby brood size can be adjusted to the level the parents can rear under the prevailing conditions.  相似文献

The study of various behavioural criteria of femaleDiadromus pulchellus parasitoids in the presence of theirAcrolepiopsis assectella hosts has shown the essentially chemical nature of the stimulant determining host recognition. The physical stimuli of the cocoon seem not to be implicated. Thus cocoons whose original texture has been completely altered, either mechanically or chemically, as well as the silk excreted by the host caterpillars significantly stimulates the female parasitoids. The cocoon contact kairomones are detected in testing the aqueous extracts ofA. assectella which provoke a positive behavioural response from the females in a threshold concentration of 1 cocoon-equivalent. The comparison of aqueous extracts ofA. assectella host cocoons, and of non-host species:Bombyx mori, Ephestia kuehniella andCacoecimorpha pronubana demonstrate the kairomone specificity of the silk, the extracts of non-host cocoons being ignored by the parasitoid, as were the silk threads left byE. kuehniella caterpillars. Finally the contact kairomones linked to the silk seem to be independent of the host plant and of the nutrient diet of the host caterpillars. The cocoons spun by the caterpillars reared on leeks or on artificial diets with or without powdered leek provoke similar responses in the parasitoids.  相似文献
