Mechanistic models of animal signals posit the occurrence of biases on the part of receivers that could be potentially exploited by signallers. Such biases are most obvious when animals are confronted with exaggerated versions of signals they normally encounter. Signalling systems operating in plant-pollinator interactions are among the most highly coevolved, with plants using a variety of floral signals to attract pollinators. A number of observations suggest that pollinators preferentially visit larger floral displays although the benefit of this to either the plant or the pollinator is not always clear. We use a standard dual-choice experimental protocol to show that honeybees display a receiver bias for exaggerated size and colour contrast--two important components of floral signals--even when such signals do not indicate quality. We discuss the implications of this receiver bias for the evolution of floral displays and its possible exploitation by invading alien plants.  相似文献

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the detection of Poisson distributed signals were evaluated by computer simulation and found to be a set of nearly collinear points when plotted on probability axes. Approximate expressions were derived for the slope and intercept (d) of the line containing the points. The predictive value of these expressions was verified by measuring slopé and d of ROC curves produced from computer simulation of Poisson signals. Estimates of slope and d from empirical ROC curves were distributed according to the Gaussian probability density with variance approximately equal to 3/n, where n is the number of stimulus repetitions used to determine the ROC.  相似文献

Many animals produce and respond to signals made up of multiple components. For example, many avian sexual displays are highly extravagant combinations of visual and acoustic elements, and are described as being 'multicomponent'. One possible reason for the evolution of such complex signals is that they provide more reliable information for receivers. However, receivers also influence signal evolution in another important way, by how they perceive and process signals: signallers will be selected to produce signals that are more easily received. The potential role of receiver psychology in the evolution of multicomponent signals has not previously been considered; in this review I present psychological results that support the notion that two components are better received than one alone. Detection can be improved by producing two components together, thus reducing the reaction time, increasing the probability of detection and lowering the intensity at which detection occurs. Discriminability of multicomponent stimuli is also made easier through better recognition, faster discrimination learning and multidimensional generalization. In addition, multicomponent stimuli also improve associative learning. I show that multicomponency does indeed improve signal reception in receivers, although the benefits of producing components in two sensory modalities (bimodal multicomponent signals) may be larger and more robust than producing them in just one (unimodal multicomponent signals). This highlights the need for consideration of receiver psychology in the evolution of multicomponent signals, and suggests that where signal components do not appear to be informative, they may instead be performing an important psychological function. A hallmark of sexual selection by mate choice is the evolution of exaggerated traits, such as longer tails in birds and more acoustic components in the calls of birds and frogs. Trait elaboration can be opposed by costs such as increased metabolism and greater predation risk, but cognitive processes of the receiver can also put a brake on trait elaboration. For example, according to Weber's Law traits of a fixed absolute difference will be more difficult to discriminate as the absolute magnitude increases. Here, we show that in the Emei music frog (Babina daunchina) increases in the fundamental frequency between successive notes in the male advertisement call, which increases the spectral complexity of the call, facilitates the female's ability to compare the number of notes between calls. These results suggest that female's discriminability provides the impetus to switch from enhancement of signaling magnitude (i.e., adding more notes into calls) to employing a new signal feature (i.e., increasing frequency among notes) to increase complexity. We suggest that increasing the spectral complexity of notes ameliorates some of the effects of Weber's Law, and highlights how perceptual and cognitive biases of choosers can have important influences on the evolution of courtship signals.  相似文献

Ionizing radiation produces many chromosome aberrations. A rich variety of aberration types can now be seen with the technique of chromosome painting. Apart from being important in medicine and public health, radiation-produced aberrations act as colorful molecular clues to damage-processing mechanisms and, because juxtaposition of different parts of the genome is involved, to interphase nuclear organization. Recent studies using chromosome painting have helped to identify DNA double-strand-break repair and misrepair pathways, to determine the extent of chromosome territories and motions, and to characterize different aberration patterns left behind by different kinds of radiation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: After anaphase, the segregated chromosomes are sequestered by cytokinesis into two separate daughter cells by a cleavage furrow formed by the actomyosin-based contractile ring. The failure to properly position the contractile ring between the segregated chromosomes can result in aneuploidy. In both C. elegans embryos and human cells, the central spindle regulates division-plane positioning in parallel with a second pathway that involves astral microtubules. RESULTS: We combined genetic and pharmacological manipulations with live cell imaging to spatially separate the two division cues in a single cell. We demonstrate that the two pathways for furrow formation are mechanistically and genetically distinct. By following the distribution of green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged nonmuscle myosin, we have found that the astral pathway for furrow formation involves the negative regulation of cortical myosin recruitment. An asymmetrically positioned spindle induces the asymmetric cortical accumulation of myosin. This cortical myosin behaves as a coherent contractile network. If the cortical network is nonuniform over the cell, the cortical contractile elements coalesce into a single furrow. This coalescence requires interconnections among contractile elements. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the two pathways of cleavage-furrow formation are mechanistically distinct. In particular, we conclude that the astral pathway for cleavage-furrow formation involves the negative regulation of myosin distribution by astral cues.  相似文献

Sequence data often have competing signals that are detected by network programs or Lento plots. Such data can be formed by generating sequences on more than one tree, and combining the results, a mixture model. We report that with such mixture models, the estimates of edge (branch) lengths from maximum likelihood (ML) methods that assume a single tree are biased. Based on the observed number of competing signals in real data, such a bias of ML is expected to occur frequently. Because network methods can recover competing signals more accurately, there is a need for ML methods allowing a network. A fundamental problem is that mixture models can have more parameters than can be recovered from the data, so that some mixtures are not, in principle, identifiable. We recommend that network programs be incorporated into best practice analysis, along with ML and Bayesian trees.  相似文献

Ribosome profiling data report on the distribution of translating ribosomes, at steady‐state, with codon‐level resolution. We present a robust method to extract codon translation rates and protein synthesis rates from these data, and identify causal features associated with elongation and translation efficiency in physiological conditions in yeast. We show that neither elongation rate nor translational efficiency is improved by experimental manipulation of the abundance or body sequence of the rare AGG tRNA. Deletion of three of the four copies of the heavily used ACA tRNA shows a modest efficiency decrease that could be explained by other rate‐reducing signals at gene start. This suggests that correlation between codon bias and efficiency arises as selection for codons to utilize translation machinery efficiently in highly translated genes. We also show a correlation between efficiency and RNA structure calculated both computationally and from recent structure probing data, as well as the Kozak initiation motif, which may comprise a mechanism to regulate initiation.  相似文献

Female guppies Poecilia reticulata descended from the Tacarigua population in Trinidad subject to high predation exhibited strong preferences for males with relatively high levels of carotenoid colouration. The study, which controlled for differences in male courtship, revealed that mate choice in this population is based on the expression of orange pigmentation, irrespective of differences in male motivation.  相似文献

Female ornaments in animals with conventional sex roles have traditionally been considered non-functional, being merely a genetically correlated response to selection for male ornamentation. Alternatively, female ornaments may be influenced by selection acting directly on the females, either through female–female competition or male choice. We tested the latter hypothesis in mate choice experiments with bluethroats (Luscinia s. svecica), a passerine bird in which females vary considerably in coloration of an ornamental throat patch. In outdoor aviaries placed in prime breeding habitat, males were allowed to choose between a colourful and a drab female. We found that males associated more with, and performed more sexual behaviours towards, colourful females. Female coloration was not age-related, but correlated significantly with body mass and tarsus length. Thus, we have demonstrated both a male preference for female ornamentation, and a relationship between ornament expression and female body size, which may be indicative of quality. Our results refute the correlated response hypothesis and support the hypothesis that female ornamentation is sexually selected.  相似文献

Aim Understanding the patterns and processes underlying phenotype in a polytypic species provides key insights into microevolutionary mechanisms of diversification. The red‐eyed treefrog, Agalychnis callidryas, exhibits strong regional differentiation in colour pattern, corresponding to five admixed mitochondrial DNA clades. We evaluated spatial diversity patterns across multiple, putative barriers to examine the fine‐scale processes that mediate phenotypic divergence between some regions while maintaining homogeneity between others. Location We examined patterns of phenotypic diversification among 17 sites that span five putative biogeographic barriers in lower Central America (Costa Rica and Panama). Methods We tested the extent to which genetic distance (FST) derived from six multilocus nuclear genotypes covaried with measures of phenotypic distance (leg coloration) within and between biogeographic regions. We used linear regression analyses to determine the role of geographic and genetic factors in structuring spatial patterns of phenotypic diversity. Results The factors that best explained patterns of phenotypic diversity varied among biogeographic regions. We identified one geographic barrier that impeded gene exchange and resulted in concordant phenotypic divergence across the Continental Divide, isolating Caribbean and Pacific populations. Across Caribbean Costa Rican populations, one barrier structured phenotypic but not genetic diversity patterns, indicating a role for selection. In other regions, the putative barriers had no determining effect on either genetic or leg colour structure. Main conclusions The processes mediating the distribution and diversification of colour pattern in this polytypic, wide‐ranging treefrog varied among biogeographic regions. Spatially varying selection combined with the isolating effects of geographic factors probably resulted in the patchy distribution of colour diversity across Costa Rican and Panamanian populations.  相似文献

Cell and tissue imaging provides scientists with wonderful tools, thanks to a fruitful dialog between chemistry, optical, mechanical, computational sciences and biology. Confocal microscopy, videomicroscopy together with a new generation of fluorochromes (especially those derived from green fluorescent protein, GFP) and image analysis software allow to visualize life in all its dimensions (space and time). Cell imaging also allows to quantify biological processes at the cellular level, to analyse both stoechiometry and dynamics of molecular interactions involved in cell and tissue regulations. Entering the new era of post-genomics requires a better knowledge of advantages and limitations of these new approaches.  相似文献
