In addition to seasonal changes in morphology, physiology andbehavior that occur in predictable annual cycles, there arefacultative responses to unpredictable events known as labile(i.e., short-lived) perturbation factors (LPFs). These rapidbehavioral and physiological changes have been termed the "emergency"life history stage (ELHS) and serve to enhance life-time fitness.Glucocorticosteroids interacting with other hormones in thehypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) cascade, initiate and orchestratethe ELHS within minutes to hours. Components of the ELHS include:redirection of behavior from a normal life history stage toincreased foraging, irruptive-type migration during the day, enhanced restfulness at night, elevated gluconeogenesis andrecovery once the perturbation passes. These physiological andbehavioral changes allow an individual to avoid potential deleteriouseffects of stress that may result from chronically elevatedlevels of circulating glucocorticosteroids over days and weeks. In other words, acute rises in glucocorticosteroids followingperturbations of the environment may actually avoid chronicstress and serve primarily as "anti-stress" hormones. Severalfield studies in diverse habitats indicate that free-livingpopulations have elevated circulating levels of corticosteroidswhen in an ELHS. However, expression of an ELHS may not alwaysbe advantageous and there is accumulating evidence from birdsthat the adrenocortical responses to LPFs are modulated bothon seasonal and individual levels. These data suggest that glucocorticosteroidsecretions in response to LPFs not only trigger physiologicaland behavioral responses but also allow flexibility so thatthe response is integrated in relation to time of year (normalLHS) as well as individual differences owing to body condition, disease and social status.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out to investigate the long-term effects of enhancing cage complexity on behavioural measures of welfare in laboratory rats. We housed 72 rats in groups of four in either ‘enriched’ or ‘unenriched’ cages for six weeks. Scan and focal animal sampling were conducted in both the light and dark phase of the second, fourth and sixth weeks. Results revealed that rats in the ‘enriched’ cages showed longer durations of sleep behaviour, and low levels of agonistic behaviour compared to rats in the ‘unenriched’ cages. Results importantly demonstrated that the behavioural changes observed in the enriched environment were due to the presence of the enrichments themselves in the cages (indirect effects) and not due merely to rats interacting with the enrichment items in their environment. Thus, enhancing the complexity of conventional laboratory cages can promote behaviour such as longer bouts of sleep that is likely to be indicative of good welfare, and diminish levels of behaviour such as aggression that is likely to lead to poor welfare.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Superimposed upon seasonal changes in morphology, physiology and behavior, are facultative responses to unpredictableevents known as labile (i.e., short-lived) perturbation factors(LPFs). These responses include behavioral and physiologicalchanges that enhance survival and collectively make up the "emergency"life history stage. There is considerable evidence that glucocorticosteroids, and other hormones in the hypothalamo—pituitary—adrenal(HPA) cascade, initiate and orchestrate the emergency life historystage within minutes to hours. This stage has a number of sub—stagesthat promote survival and avoid potential deleterious effectsof stress that may result from chronically elevated levels ofcirculating glucocorticosteroids over days and weeks. Thesesub—stages may include: redirection of behavior from anormal life history stage to increased foraging, irruptivetypemigration during the day, enhanced restfulness at night, andelevated gluconeogenesis. Once the perturbation passes, glucocorticosteroidsmay also promote recovery. Additional evidence from birds indicatesthat glucocorticosteroid responses to a standardized capture, handling and restraint protocol are modulated both on seasonaland individual levels. Field work reveals that these changesin responsiveness to LPFs have ecological bases, such as reproductivestate, body condition etc., that in turn indicate differenthormonal control mechanisms in the HPA cascade.  相似文献

Terrestrial systems in Antarctica are characterized by substantial spatial and temporal variation. However, few studies have addressed the paucity of data on metabolic responses to the unpredictable Antarctic environment, particularly with regard to terrestrial biota. This study measured metabolic rate variation for individual springtails at a continental Antarctic site using a fiber-optic closed respirometry system incorporating a custom-made respiration chamber. Concurrent measures of (behavioural) activity were made via daily pitfall counts.Metabolic rate of Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni measured at constant temperature varied systematically with progression through the austral summer, and was greatest mid-season. This finding of clear intra-seasonal and temperature-independent variation in mass-specific metabolic rate in G. hodgsoni is one of very few such reports for a terrestrial invertebrate (and the only such study for Antarctica), and parallels physiological studies in the Antarctic marine environment linking metabolic rate elevation with biological function rather than temperature adaptation per se. However, response to temperature at relatively short time-scales is also likely to be an important part of the life history strategy of Antarctic terrestrial invertebrates such as G. hodgsoni, which appears capable of both physiologically and behaviourally ‘tuning’ in to short-term thermal variability to respond appropriately to the local unpredictable Antarctic habitat.  相似文献

While a large body of research has focused on the physiological effects of multiple environmental stressors, how behavioural and life-history plasticity mediate multiple-stressor effects remains underexplored. Behavioural plasticity can not only drive organism-level responses to stressors directly but can also mediate physiological responses. Here, we provide a conceptual framework incorporating four fundamental trade-offs that explicitly link animal behaviour to life-history-based pathways for energy allocation, shaping the impact of multiple stressors on fitness. We first address how small-scale behavioural changes can either mediate or drive conflicts between the effects of multiple stressors and alternative physiological responses. We then discuss how animal behaviour gives rise to three additional understudied and interrelated trade-offs: balancing the benefits and risks of obtaining the energy needed to cope with stressors, allocation of energy between life-history traits and stressor responses, and larger-scale escape from stressors in space or time via large-scale movement or dormancy. Finally, we outline how these trade-offs interactively affect fitness and qualitative ecological outcomes resulting from multiple stressors. Our framework suggests that explicitly considering animal behaviour should enrich our mechanistic understanding of stressor effects, help explain extensive context dependence observed in these effects, and highlight promising avenues for future empirical and theoretical research.  相似文献

Balance recovery from an unpredictable postural perturbation can be a challenging task for many older people and poor recovery could contribute to their risk of falls. This study examined associations between responses to unpredictable perturbations and fall risk in older people. 242 older adults (80.0±4.4 years) underwent assessments of stepping responses to multi-directional force-controlled waist-pull perturbations. Participants returned monthly falls calendars for the subsequent 12 months. Future falls were associated with lower force thresholds for stepping in the posterior and lateral but not anterior directions. Those with lower posterior force thresholds for stepping were 68% more likely to fall at home than those with higher force thresholds for stepping. These results suggest that amount of force that can be withstood following an unpredictable balance perturbation predicts future falls in community-dwelling older adults. Perturbations in the posterior direction best discriminated between future fallers and non-fallers.  相似文献

Prolonged exposure to stress during development can have long-term detrimental effects on health and wellbeing. However, the environmental matching hypothesis proposes that developmental stress programs physiology and behaviour in an adaptive way that can enhance fitness if early environments match those experienced later in life. Most research has focused on the harmful effects that stress during a single period in early life may exert in adulthood. In this study, we tested the potential additive and beneficial effects that stress experienced during both pre- and post-hatching development may have on adult physiology and behaviour. Japanese quail experienced different stress-related treatments across two developmental life stages: pre-hatching corticosterone (CORT) injection, post-hatching unpredictable food availability, both pre- and post-hatching treatments, or control. In adulthood, we determined quails' acute stress response, neophobia and novel environment exploration. The pre-hatching CORT treatment resulted in attenuated physiological responses to an acute stressor, increased activity levels and exploration in a novel environment. Post-hatching unpredictable food availability decreased adults' latency to feed. Furthermore, there were cumulative effects of these treatments across the two developmental stages: quail subjected to both pre- and post-hatching treatments were the most explorative and risk-taking of all treatment groups. Such responses to novel environments could enhance survival in unpredictable environments in later life. Our data also suggest that these behavioural responses may have been mediated by long-term physiological programming of the adrenocortical stress response, creating phenotypes that could exhibit fitness-enhancing behaviours in a changing environment.  相似文献

Comparative physiology has traditionally focused on the physiological responses of animals to their physicochemical environment. In recent years, awareness has increased among physiologists of the potential for behavioural factors, such as the social environment of the animal, to affect physiological condition and responses. This recognition has led to an emerging trend within the field toward using multidisciplinary approaches that incorporate both behavioural and physiological techniques. Research areas in which the integrated study of behaviour and physiology has been particularly fruitful include the physiology of the social environment, sensory physiology and behaviour, and physiological constraints on behavioural ecology. The manner in which incorporating behavioural considerations has informed the physiological data collected is discussed for each of these areas using specific examples.  相似文献

The effects of sub-lethal low temperatures on insect physiology and behaviour are important determinants of insect activity including foraging, mating, and predation avoidance. A substantial body of research seeks to relate the temperatures at which these activities are compromised to both, climatic conditions at species range limits and underlying physiological processes. The interpretation of this research is complicated by confusion in the names and definition of the responses measured and their associated temperature thresholds. The development of the nomenclature and explanations of the underlying physiological causes are reviewed in order to elucidate the correct sequence of responses/thresholds and associated terminologies. The results of this analysis indicate that: (1) chill coma is a clearly defined, reversible physiological state characterised by the absence of electrophysiological activity. (2) The onset of chill coma begins when low temperatures begin to impair insect behaviour and physiology, and is punctuated by a series of behavioural and/or physiological thresholds or responses. These include the temperatures at which (i) spontaneous movements cease, (ii) coordination is lost to the degree that locomotion becomes impossible, and (iii) chill coma is entered. (3) Confusion has arisen because (a) the term ‘onset of chill coma’ has been used to describe all three of these responses/thresholds and (b) the term CTmin has entered the insect literature from the vertebrate literature. These issues are discussed and a potential solution is proposed to provide clarity and consistency in the future literature.  相似文献

Both ethology and physiology can provide insights about stress conditions in wild animals during handling. Lama guanicoe (guanaco) is the major large herbivore inhabiting arid zones in Argentina. Since 2005, the Payún Matrú Cooperative, a business established and run by native people, has captured and handled guanacos for shearing at Payunia Reserve, Mendoza Province, Argentina, to market the species’ fibre for clothing and other products. The aim of our study was to evaluate the behavioural and physiological stress responses to handling of wild guanacos during these shearing activities. We evaluated stress conditions in guanacos by monitoring the frequency of agonistic behaviour in the holding corrals, following capture, the rate of vocalisation and agonistic behaviour during handling, and by estimating cortisol levels in handled animals. Crowding increased agonistic behaviour; this appeared to be related to dominance conflicts between males in the corrals. Time of corralling increased rate of agonistic behaviour and vocalisations during handling. The rate of behavioural stress responses was negatively related to cortisol levels in males; which may be due to animal fatigue or because behavioural stress responses may help mitigate physiological stress responses. Incorporating our results into animal welfare practices could help reduce stress conditions in wild guanacos. Our results suggest that both behavioural and physiological responses are important measures of stress in handled animals, and that behavioural stress responses cannot be used as a simple surrogate for glucocorticoid levels.  相似文献

The emergence of a unified cognitive behaviour relies on the coordination of specialized components that distribute across a ‘brain’, body and environment. Although a general dynamical mechanism involved in agent-environment integration is still largely unknown for behavioural robustness, discussions here are focussed on one of the most plausible candidate: the formation of distributed mechanisms working in transient during agent-environment coupling. This article provides discussions on this sort of coordination based on a mobile object-tracking task with situated, embodied and minimal agents, and tests for robust yet adaptive behaviour. The proposed scenario provides examples of behavioural mechanisms that counterbalance the functional organization of internal control activity and agents’ situatedness to enable the evolution of a two-agent interaction task. Discussions in this article suggest that future studies of distributed cognition should take into account that there are at least two possible modes of interpreting distributed mechanisms and that these have a qualitatively different effect on behavioural robustness.  相似文献

Indian Hypericum perforatum (IHp) was investigated on a 14-day mild, unpredictable and inescapable foot shock stress (FSS) induced perturbations in behaviour (depression), suppressed male sexual behaviour and cognitive dysfunction in albino rats. Gastric ulceration, and adrenal gland and spleen weights, were also used as the stress indices. Panax ginseng (PG) was used as the standard adaptogenic agent for comparison. FSS induced marked gastric ulceration, significant increase in adrenal gland weight with concomitant decrease in spleen weight. Chronic stress also suppressed male sexual behaviour, induced behavioural depression (Porsolt's swim despair test and learned helplessness test) and cognitive dysfunction (attenuated retention of learning in active and passive avoidance tests). All these FSS induced perturbations were attenuated dose dependently by IHp (100 and 200 mg/kg, po) and PG (100 mg/kg, po). The results indicate that IHp has significant anti-stress activity, qualitatively comparable to PG, against a variety of behavioural and physiological perturbations induced by chronic stress, which has been proposed to be a better indicator of clinical stress than acute stress, and may indicate adaptogenic activity.  相似文献

EuMil, is a herbal formulation comprising the standardised extracts of Withania somnifera (L) Dunal, Ocimum sanctum L, Asparagus racemosus Willd and Emblica officinalis Gaertn., all of which are classified in Ayurveda as rasayanas to promote physical and mental health, improve defense mechanisms of the body and enhance longevity. These attributes are similar to the modern concept of adaptogenic agents, which are, known to afford protection to the human physiological system against diverse stressors. The present study was undertaken to investigate the adaptogenic and antistress activity of EuMil against chronic unpredictable, but mild, footshock stress-induced perturbations in behaviour (depression), glucose metabolism, suppressed male sexual behaviour, immunosuppression and cognitive dysfunction in CF strain albino rats. Panex ginseng (PG) was used for comparison. Gastric ulceration, plasma corticosterone levels, serum lipid, hepatic and renal functions were used as the stress indices. These effects were attenuated by EuMil (dose 100 mg/kg, p.o.) and PG (100 mg/kg. p.o.), administered once daily over a period of 14 days, the period of stress induction period. Further, chronic stress also induced glucose intolerance, suppressed male sexual behaviour, induced behavioural despair and cognitive dysfunction and immunosuppression. All these chronic stress-induced perturbations were attenuated, in a dose dependent manner by EuMil and PG. Thus, the results indicate that EuMil has significant adaptogenic and anti-stress, activity, qualitatively comparable to PG, against a variety of behavioural, biochemical and physiological perturbations, induced by unpredictable stress, which has been proposed to be a better indicator of clinical stress than acute stress. The likely contribution of the individual constituents of EuMil in the observed adaptogenic action of the polyherbal formulation, has been discussed.  相似文献

To successfully reproduce in the Arctic, birds must modulate their neuroendocrine and behavioural systems. These adjustments include an attenuation of the stress responsiveness of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to external stimuli and a behavioural insensitivity to high corticosterone (B) levels. The HPA axis was examined in free-living territorial polygynandrous Smith's longspurs (Calcarius pictus) that migrate to breed on the Arctic tundra. Basal and stress-induced B levels were measured through the breeding season and were found to be significantly lower in females compared with males. This was not a consequence of adrenal insensitivity, because intrajugular injections of adrenocorticotrophin hormone (ACTH) enhanced B release in incubating females. In males the adrenocortical response to stress was significantly attenuated during the parental phase compared with arrival at the breeding ground. In contrast to temperate passerines, there was no significant decrease in male territorial aggressive behaviour when B was experimentally elevated, suggesting a behavioural insensitivity to glucocorticoids. This mechanism is hypothesized to increase reproductive success by preventing interruptions to parental care during transient deleterious environmental perturbations, which are often experienced in the short Arctic breeding season. Modulation of the HPA axis in this species in relation to life-history stage, lifetime reproductive success and the polygynandrous mating system is discussed.  相似文献

Repetitive, unvarying and apparently functionless behaviours called stereotypies are common in caged animals, but the mechanisms of cage stereotypy have remained elusive. We found that stereotypies correlate with a sign of altered brain functioning, the general disinhibition of behaviour, found in stereotyping human patients and animals treated with psychostimulants. We investigated route-tracing stereotypy in blue tits, Parus caeruleus, and marsh tits,P. palustris , caged in a behavioural research laboratory. In experiment 1, stereotypy correlated with disinhibition of responses, shown as persistent responding in extinction learning. In experiment 2a, stereotypy in blue tits correlated with repetitive sequence generation on a ‘gambling task’ that specifically measures disinhibited striatal functioning in humans and correlates with stereotypy in autistic and schizophrenic patients. In experiment 2b, the behavioural disinhibition correlated with stereotypy also affected food-storing behaviour in marsh tits, in particular their response to cache pilfering. In experiment 3, the sequencing of nonstereotypic home cage behaviour was correlated with stereotypy. Finally, changes in stereotypy induced by environmental enrichment correlated with changes in these measures of altered behavioural control. These results suggest that housing conditions that cause stereotypy thus alter many aspects of the behavioural control of caged subjects, mediated by altered striatal functioning. The implications for understanding cage stereotypies in laboratory, farm and zoo animals, and for laboratory-based behavioural experiments, are discussed. We suggest that improving housing conditions so that cage stereotypies do not develop would enhance the validity of laboratory-based behavioural research.  相似文献

We tested first-time fathers with their 22-month old toddlers to determine whether social context variables such as pre-test absence from the child and presence of the mother affected physiological measures associated with paternal responsiveness. Heart rate and blood pressure readings as well as blood samples to determine prolactin, testosterone and cortisol levels were taken before and after the 30-min father–toddler interactions. Fathers were tested on a day when they were away from their child for several hours before testing (‘without-child’ day) and on another day where they remained with their child throughout the day (‘with-child’ day). Most measures decreased over the 30-min test period but relative decreases were context-dependent. Men maintained higher prolactin levels when they were away from their children longer before testing on the ‘without-child’ day. Cortisol levels decreased during both tests and they decreased more on the ‘with-child’ day for men who had spent more time alone with their toddler before the test. Heart-rate and diastolic (but not systolic) blood pressure decreased more on the ‘with-child’ day than on the ‘without-child’ day. Fathers' testosterone levels decreased when their partners were less involved in the interactions. Compared to men with high responsiveness ratings on both days, men whose responsiveness increased after being away from their child on the ‘without-child’ day maintained higher systolic blood pressure and had a greater decrease in testosterone levels. We conclude that context may be more important in determining fathers' physiological responses to child contact than has previously been appreciated, particularly for some individuals.  相似文献

Numerous environmental features have the potential to act as barriers to fishes in the field. Passage of these barriers depends on two main properties: willingness (behavioural) and physiological capacity. The physiological swimming capacity of fishes has been well studied. However, because most barrier research has focused on the population level effects of man – made barriers, little attention has been given to the behavioural aspects of fish passage. We used appetitive conditioning to create a simple laboratory based protocol to estimate behavioural limits to fish passage. We tested our protocol using barrier height (or passage space) as a model. Our protocol successfully identified behavioural limits in two species, juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas. Our most interesting observation was that even a partial, submerged barrier had the potential to block fish movements. Our results suggest a potential use for conditioning techniques in assessing factors that constitute behaviour barriers to fishes. This information may help us to better predict fish movements in the field and may help us to design barriers that are more efficient at passing fishes.  相似文献

The role of learning in fish behaviour   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary The behavioural patterns of fish are the result of innate (built-in) patterns of maturation (developmental changes) and of learning processes (imprinting and trial-and-error learning). Innate behavioural patterns are considered to be hard-wired and inflexible. However, through learning, fish can adapt to environmental change. For instance, the homing behaviour of fish may be partly the result of the development of specific parts of the brain and partly because of changes in behaviour with experience. Similarly, one can assume that the feeding mode of fish involving snap-responses is innate, but learning enables fish to modify their foraging behaviour in response to a fluctuating environment. By reviewing these and other examples, such as the role of recognition learning and socially transmitted behaviour, one can illustrate the importance of learning in the everyday life of fishes. Although learning plays a large role in the behaviour of fishes, the learning capacity of fishes may also be useful to fisheries research and hatchery operations.  相似文献

The behavioural determinants of male mating success play a pivotal role in sexual selection, but remain poorly known for most kinds of organisms, including most reptiles. In Manitoba, Canada, large numbers of red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, court and mate in early spring near communal overwintering dens. To understand how a male's morphology and behaviour might influence his mating success, we videotaped 21 groups of snakes each comprising four males of varying body sizes plus a female. All males engaged in courtship, and mating occurred in all groups. Males with better body condition courted more vigorously and successfully than their smaller rivals did. The males that obtained matings were those that maintained their own cloaca closest to that of the female, aligned most of their body with the female, showed high rates of caudocephalic waving, chin pressing and tail searching, and did not allow other males to insert their body beside the female's. These behavioural differences between ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ were apparent from the beginning of each trial. Thus, male mating success in this ‘scramble’ system is determined not by chaotic, stochastic struggle (as has often been inferred) but instead is strongly linked to male courtship tactics. Energy stores (as evidenced by good body condition) may be critical determinants of mating success in these vigorous courtship episodes.  相似文献

The effects of the social environment during development on life-history decisions and adult behaviour were assessed using male guppies Poecilia reticulata . Males raised with adults developed secondary sexual characteristics later than males raised either singly or with four of their siblings indicating social inhibition of maturation was evident in P. reticulata . There was no effect, however, of rearing environment on male behaviour. The results reveal that social environment during development can influence life-history decisions but is less important than immediate social context in determining male behavioural phenotype in P. reticulata .  相似文献
