Mean age at vaginal opening was 41 days, range 33-53 days. Bodyweight at weaning and age at vaginal opening were negatively correlated, but there was no relationship between bodyweight and age at vaginal opening. The presence of a male before vaginal opening did not accelerate either the time of its occurrence or first conception. The vaginas of females caged singly from weaning opened earlier than in those kept in groups of 2 or 3.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to examine the influence of adult males on the rate of sexual maturation in young female wild mice. In one experiment, young females were raised in presence of adult males, adult females and in absence of any individual, while in another, they were exposed to urines of: (1) castrated males, (2) spayed females, (3) castrated and TP-treated males, (4) castrated and placebo-injected males. Female maturation as measured by age at vaginal opening and first vaginal oestrus was accelerated by presence of adult males, whereas presence of adult females considerably delayed the vaginal opening and the appearance of first oestrus in young females. In the other set of the experiments, urine from castrated or castrated and placebo-injected males was ineffective in inducing early puberty while urine from spayed females highly delayed the sexual maturation. By contrast, urine from castrated and TP-treated males accelerated the puberty more or less like normal males. The results indicate that male's chemosignal accelerating puberty in young females is present in urine and its production is under the control of androgens. However, the female-originating urinary pheromone which delays the puberty in young females is not regulated by ovarian hormones.  相似文献

The effects of acceleration and delay of puberty in female house mice on survival and reproduction were tested using 6 experimental groups: (1) control females mated at the time of first oestrus, (2) females mated at weaning, (3) females treated with male urine starting at weaning and mated at first oestrus, (4) females housed in groups and mated at first oestrus, (5) females housed alone, treated with urine from grouped females and mated at first oestrus, and (6) females housed alone and mated at 68 days of age. Females caged with males at weaning or treated with male urine and mated at puberty had lower rates of survival to 180 days of age, but did not differ in rates of fertility from mice in the other four treatments. Those females that were housed with males from weaning or treated with male urine also had smaller total numbers of litters, fewer total young, and smaller average litter sizes than did females for which the age of mating was delayed, by grouping or treatment with urine from grouped females, or by being held until age 68 days before mating. Control females mated at first oestrus generally were intermediate or did not differ from the male treatments on these dependent variables. There were no differences in the average number of female young/litter across the 6 treatments. However, females that were delayed in age of first mating had significantly more male young/litter than did females that were accelerated in their sexual development or control females.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Age at maturity, a particularly important parameter in the life history of small mammals, contributes greatly to fitness. Social influences on age at maturity have been demonstrated for altricial rodents, in particular, mice. Nothing is known about such effects in precocial small mammals. Wild cavies Cavia aperea are born in a highly precocial state and mature early in life, briefly after weaning. We investigated whether the wild cavy C. aperea and the domestic guinea-pig Cavia aperea f. porcellus reach maturity earlier in the presence of adults of the opposite sex. Juvenile females kept in pairs without males showed first vaginal opening (=oestrus) when 59 days old in cavies and at about 40 days in the guinea-pig. However, in the company of adult males, cavy females kept in pairs reached maturity when about 30 days old, and guinea-pig females when 26 days old. Most cavy females experienced successful pregnancy following first vaginal opening. In cavies, female mass at birth and at first oestrus was not correlated with age at first oestrus. In guinea-pigs, birth mass predicted age at maturity only when a male was present. The growth rate from birth to first oestrus related to age at first oestrus. In the wild cavy, the presence of a male appeared to influence maturation more between days 25 and 30 than earlier in life. Male C. aperea matured and had fully descended testes when about 65–70 days old. All male cavies produced abundant motile sperm from day 75. First successful copulations occurred at about the same age. Surprisingly, the priming effect of the presence of an adult male on female maturation proved stronger in these highly precocial caviomorphs than in altricial rodents investigated so far.  相似文献

The experiments examined the timing, duration and possible enhancement effects of group contact on the delay of sexual maturation produced in prepubertal female house mice by urine from grouped females. One or three days of pheromone stimulation at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning was not sufficient to delay puberty in females caged singly. However, pheromone treatment for 7 days, beginning during the first week after weaning, did significantly delay the onset of first vaginal oestrus relative to control females treated with water. Both the timing and duration of pheromone stimulation appear to be critical factors affecting pheromone-induced delay of sexual maturation. Mean ages at first oestrus for females housed with a group of 7 other females, for 3 or 7 days at specified ages during the first 2 weeks after weaning, did not differ from mean ages recorded with urine stimulation only. Contact with other females does not appear to alter or enhance the delay-of-maturation effect achieved with urine stimulation. In all these respects the maturation-delay pheromone of grouped female mice appears to differ from the puberty-accelerating pheromone of male mice.  相似文献

Among nocturnal Malagasy prosimians, the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) is considered a solitary species which has a promiscuous mating system. Indirect indicators, such as the lack of sexual dimorphism, the overlapping of male and female home ranges with each other, the synchronism of seasonal oestrus and the high relative testes size of males, support the presence of sperm competition. In captivity, an intense sexual precopulatory competition develops among males, leading to the emergence of a dominant male who fathers the majority of the litters. Although multiple mating did occur, the dominant male achieved the majority of the matings on the first day of oestrus. A 'mate-guarding' behaviour, exhibited by the dominant male, was observed in 11 groups out of 15, on only the first day of the vaginal opening and was significantly more often directed towards younger females. Females also played an important role in sexual competition among males, since their presence enhances the aggressive interactions between males. Difference in aggressive behaviours of females, in response to male sexual solicitations, suggests female mate choice. Compared with data from wild animals, it may be hypothesised that alternative mating strategies can be used by male grey mouse lemurs to enhance their reproductive success, depending on the availability and distribution of receptive females.  相似文献

The effect of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on sexual maturation of female rats was studied. A within-litter experimental design was employed, so that in each litter each female received four daily injections of EGF (E, 500 ng/g body weight s.c.) or vehicle (V), at one of three ages: days 0-3 (E1, V1), days 8-11 (E2, V2), days 16-19 (E3, V3). Body weight, pinna detachment, incisor eruption, eye opening, auditory startle, visual placing, vaginal opening and first cytological oestrus were assessed. Neonatal treatment with EGF (E1) delayed pinna detachment and the appearance of the auditory startle, but accelerated eye opening. Also, E1, but not E2 and E3, resulted in lower body weight at weaning. Treatment E3 advanced sexual maturation, as indicated by vaginal opening and first cytological oestrus, by 5-6 days. E1 and E2 had no such effect. Hence the sensitive period for the effect of EGF on female rat sexual maturation is later than that for effects on other developmental characteristics and body weight. In a second experiment, ovary and uterus weights were found not to differ between E3 and V3 females killed on the day of vaginal opening of the E3 rats, suggesting that the effect of EGF may be specifically on the perineal epithelium and not on sexual maturation generally.  相似文献

Vaginal smears and blood samples were taken throughout the reproductive cycle of female Galago c. crassicaudatus. Blood plasma was assayed for oestradiol and progesterone, and vaginal smears were initially classified dioestrus or vaginal oestrus. During vaginal oestrus the females were tested daily for sexual receptivity by being placed with a male. Those days on which the male achieved intromission were reclassified as behavioural oestrus. During dioestrus the females were tested weekly with males. Female receptivity increased and then declined across a 6-day period of behavioural oestrus during the 44-day cycle. Fully cornified smears were characteristic of the period of maximal receptivity and oestradiol secretion. The luteal phase lasted 24 days with a plasma progesterone peak midway through dioestrus.  相似文献

Australian hopping mice (Notomy alexis) were subjected to short or long photoperiods, different social environments and/or water deprivation. The age at which vaginal opening and first oestrus occurred was delayed by short photoperiods and by the absence of male proximity. Water deprivation prevented normal maturation. The normal 7 to 8 day oestrous cycle was prolonged by short photoperiods or water deprivation. Animals deprived of water had lighter body, ovarian and uterine weights, and follicular growth seemed to be impaired. No differences in organ weights were found between animals in the two photoperiods. The significance of the findings is discussed.  相似文献

A sequence of six experiments using wild stock house mouse (Mus domesticus) tested the effects of intermittent stimulation with either the urinary chemosignal released by grouped female mice or social contact from grouped females on the age of first vaginal oestrus in young females. Weanling female mice were exposed to bedding soiled by grouped females or cages containing grouped females for 15 min periods, then removed for a prescribed period, and placed again in a cage with soiled bedding or grouped females. The nature of the exposure to the puberty delaying effect, the number of total exposures each day, the total length of exposure to the stimulus, and the total time period over which the exposures occurred were varied. None of the treatment regimes employed here with soiled bedding from grouped females resulted in delays in the onset of first oestrus in test females. Young females exposed to grouped females for 6 or 8 exposures in a 4 h period, 6 or 8 exposures in an 8 h period, or 8 exposures in a 12 h period were significantly delayed in attaining puberty relative to control females that were exposed to cages containing clean bedding. These results are in contrast to earlier findings involving chemosignals that accelerate first oestrus wherein young females exhibited the capacity to accumulate the exposures to the urinary chemosignals from males, females in oestrus and pregnant or lactating females. Direct exposure to the grouped females on an intermittent basis can provide stimulation that is cummulative and results in delays in the onset of first oestrus.  相似文献

This research reports analyses of correlated response in reproductive onset in ICR mice after 23 generations of restricted index selection for divergent body weight gain, early (birth-10 days) or later (28-56 days) in life. Long-term selection altered growth trajectories and 56 day body weight of individuals under different selection regimes in this study. Mice in lines under early selection have the same percentage mature weight at vaginal opening as controls (63%). Vaginal opening is delayed in mice selected for slow early growth, which take longer to reach what appears to be a weight threshold. In contrast, individuals in lines selected for later slow growth undergo vaginal opening at the same age as controls, but at a lower weight and increased percentage mature weight. Pre-compensation or 'counter-balance growth' is observed in these lines, with mice selected for late enhanced growth reaching 52% of mature weight at vaginal opening while mice with late slow growth attain 71% of mature weight prior to vaginal opening. Only 42% of mice with late slow growth attain first oestrus by 56 days. We speculate this is a function of growth rate and fat/lean ratio. Mice with early slow growth show compensatory growth, reaching first oestrus at a similar time to controls. We conclude that selection for growth rate has asymmetrically affected reproductive onset, with lines selected for suppressed gains experiencing delays in the reproductive onset traits measured.  相似文献

Female brush-tailed bettongs (Bettongia penicillata) housed in a breeding group of one male and one to three females had an average gestation period of 21.2 days (n = 58) and parturition was followed within 24 h by oestrus and mating. If a young was not born as a result of the mating, oestrus recurred after about 21.7 days (n = 12). From removal of pouch young to birth was 17.5 days, on average (n = 85), in females that had mated post partum, but most females that were isolated from a male before parturition returned to oestrus about 6.6 days after simultaneous removal of pouch young and return to the male (n = 9). Females housed in female-only groups appeared not to come into oestrus or to do so irregularly. These females, when returned to the male, usually came into oestrus within 10 days. These data provide evidence that, in most females of B. penicillata, ovulation does not occur in the absence of a male and that previously isolated females return to oestrus within 10 days of return to the male.  相似文献

Peak values in the karyopyknotic index of vaginal smears from the squirrel monkey occurred at intervals of 10.9±0.1 days. The urinary excretory rate of a metabolite similar to preg-nanediol increased when ovulation was induced by exogenous gonadotropin therapy. Small amounts of this metabolite were excreted during lactation, periods of anoestrus and during the follicular phases of normal oestrous cycles. Significantly larger amounts were excreted during the 157 days gestation period and during the luteal phase which persisted for one week after a peak karyopyknotic index value was observed. Changes in the pattern of urinary electrolyte excretion were not correlated reliably with changes in ovarian differentiation. Sexual motivation was greatest at mid-cycle, became less after conception and persisted at a low level throughout gestation and lactation. The occurrence of oestrus was seasonal and independent of physical contact with males. The development of secondary sexual characteristics in the male was synchronized with the onset of seasonal oestrus in the females.  相似文献

Mice were maintained in rooms with constant ambient conditions and a 12 h light:12 h dark daily light regimen with the lights on starting at 06:00 h. In Exp. I, detection of puberty, as measured by first vaginal oestrus, was recorded at significantly earlier ages when vaginal smears were taken at 04:00 or 08:00 h than at other times of the day. In Exp. II, adult females were detected as being in oestrus more frequently when vaginal smears were taken within 6 h before or after the onset of the light part of the cycle each day than at other times.  相似文献

In studies 1 and 2 nine pairs of desert woodrats (Neotoma lepida lepida) were observed for copulatory behaviour when the female was in a state of naturally occurring oestrus (study 1) and following ovariectomy and oestrogen and progesterone replacement (study 2). Males and females respond in a similar way under conditions of natural and hormone-induced oestrus. Males show a consummatory pattern involving multiple mounts and ejaculations, with ejaculations occurring after single intromissions. Females show the lordosis reflex accompanied by hop-and-dart and ear-wiggling responses. In addition, both sexes show appetitive precopulatory behaviours; the male emits an audible rasping vocalization as he trails and mounts the female, following a period of intense sniffing of the female's anogenital region. The female also frequently approaches and sniffs the male. In study 3, the role of female odours in the sexual behaviour of the male was examined in eight of the nine pairs used in studies 1 and 2. This was done by applying to the anogenital region of ovariectomized females a combination of urine and vaginal secretions taken from familiar and unfamiliar, and oestrogen-primed or non-oestrogen-primed females. The results show that odours from oestrogen-primed females are not sufficient to elicit male sexual behaviour, if the female is not sexually active. In study 4 the eight males were tested for their preferences for urine and vaginal secretion odours taken from females in different reproductive states and applied to cotton swabs. These males spent more time sniffing unfamiliar oestrous odours than unfamiliar non-oestrous odours and more time sniffing oestrous odours from a familiar female over those taken from an unfamiliar female. In study 5, 12 sexually active males were tested with oestrogen-primed females before and after either olfactory bulb removal or sham-surgery. Bulbectomized animals ceased copulating with females although females showed precopulatory approaches.Taken together, these studies suggest that normal sexual behaviour in the male woodrat requires that the female both possess the attractive odours (of oestrus) and that she engage in appetitive precopulatory behaviour.  相似文献

Oestrus is synchronized in non-lactating wild red deer females (hinds) that associate together during the mating season (rut). Female relatives associate together and this association leads to synchronous oestrus within kin groups which is not due to kinship per se. Estimated conception dates show only slight synchrony between associated hinds, probably due to the failure of some hinds to conceive at the first oestrus. Hinds that were lactating during or immediately prior to the rut show no tendency to conceive synchronously. Possible advantages of synchronized oestrus and conceptions are discussed.  相似文献

Most hibernating animals are thought to be monoestrous because reproductive activity is subject to strong time constraints. In previous studies, female European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) turned out to have elevated oestradiol levels during late lactation and after weaning, indicating ovarian activity during summer. Therefore, we monitored vaginal cytology, endocrine changes, and vulval development in semi-free-living female European ground squirrels throughout one active season. Vaginal oestrus, defined by the predominance of cornified cells in smear samples, was found during the mating period shortly after vernal emergence. This phase was followed by metoestrus, characterised by the appearance of leukocytes, and a subsequent anoestrous phase. During weaning or postlactation, a second vaginal oestrus was documented in all experimental females, again followed by a metoestrous and an anoestrous phase lasting until hibernation. In line with the second vaginal oestrus, plasma oestradiol concentrations peaked during postlactation. Progesterone levels were elevated from gestation to postlactation, and titres were marginally higher during vaginal oestrus in summer than in spring. Vulval swelling was more pronounced during the first than the second vaginal oestrus. The second oestrous cycle was non-reproductive, as males were sexually inactive with regressed testes during summer. We assume that the second oestrous cycle and the accompanying endocrine changes have beneficial effects on prehibernatory fattening and reproductive performance in the subsequent season. This might allow females to become oestrous immediately after emergence from hibernation in spring.  相似文献

Dabrafenib (DAB), an inhibitor of BRAF kinase activity, is approved for metastatic melanoma with a BRAF V600E mutation. In support of pediatric cancer development, a nonclinical juvenile rat toxicity study was conducted in which females had early vaginal opening (VO). It was hypothesized that the early VO was not indicative of sexual maturation, but a result of a local effect on the vagina. An investigative study was conducted that mimicked the definitive study design, with rats given DAB or vehicle orally from Postnatal Day (PND) 7 to 35 and with necropsy subsets just before VO, at the first and second estrus, along with age‐matched controls. Histopathology was performed on reproductive tissues, including immunohistochemistry for BRAF expression. VO occurred earlier in DAB females than in controls (PND 27.2 vs. 31.5); however, the timing of the first estrus was unaffected (PND 34.0 vs. 33.0). DAB‐treated females evaluated just before VO (PND 22.0) had mostly immature reproductive tracts with no evidence of ovulation, similar to age‐matched controls; however, DAB‐treated females had keratinized and histologically open vaginas. Also, there was raised skin around the urogenital area, which correlated with hyperplasia/keratosis of the vulvar skin and keratinization of the distal vagina. BRAF expression (evaluated in controls) was localized to these tissues. Thus, early VO in rats given DAB likely represents a local effect accelerating vaginal keratinization to become open and not accelerated sexual maturation  相似文献

The effect of weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity, lactation length, breed and their interactions on changes of vaginal impedance in sows after weaning and during oestrus was examined. The impedance measurements were carried out by a four-electrode method. The interval from weaning to oestrus was significantly longer in sows with the length of lactation 21-25 days than 26-30 days and 31-36 days and in primiparous than multiparous sows. The interval from weaning to oestrus was negatively correlated with the length of lactation (r=-0.21; P<0.05), parity (r=-0.36; P<0.01) and oestrus duration (r=-0.26; P<0.01). The weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity and lactation length had a significant effect and the breed of sows had no influence on the vaginal impedance in peri-oestrus. The decrease of vaginal impedance after weaning was delayed in sows with a longer weaning to oestrus interval and in primiparous than multiparous sows. The decline of vaginal impedance during peri-oestrus was more gradual in sows with a longer interval from weaning to oestrus, shorter lactation, primiparous sows and sows with the length of oestrus 36 h and 72 h and more. The nadir of vaginal impedance occurred earlier before oestrus in sows with a shorter oestrus. The interaction of weaning to oestrus interval with parity and oestrus duration and the interaction of oestrus duration with parity significantly affected the vaginal impedance in weaned sows. In conclusion, the weaning to oestrus interval, oestrus duration, parity and lactation length considerably influence the vaginal impedance in sows during peri-oestrus. The findings indicate that the impedance technique may be a useful method for a study of factors and processes that accelerate or slow down the return to oestrus after weaning and affect oestrus duration in sows.  相似文献
