Genetic variation and co-variation among the key pulpwood selection traits for Eucalyptus globulus were estimated for a range of sites in Portugal, with the aim of improving genetic parameters used to predict breeding values and correlated response to selection. The trials comprised clonally replicated full-sib families (eight trials) and unrelated clones (17 trials), and exhibited varying levels of pedigree connectivity. The traits studied were stem diameter at breast height, Pilodyn penetration (an indirect measure of wood basic density) and near infrared reflectance predicted pulp yield. Univariate and multivariate linear mixed models were fitted within and across sites, and estimates of additive genetic, total genetic, environmental and phenotypic variances and covariances were obtained. All traits studied exhibited significant levels of additive genetic variation. The average estimated within-site narrow-sense heritability was 0.19 ± 0.03 for diameter and 0.29 ± 0.03 for Pilodyn penetration, and the pooled estimate for predicted pulp yield was 0.42 ± 0.14. When they could be tested, dominance and epistatic effects were generally not statistically significant, although broad-sense heritability estimates were slightly higher than narrow-sense heritability estimates. Averaged across trials, positive additive (0.64 ± 0.08), total genetic (0.58 ± 0.04), environmental (0.38 ± 0.03) and phenotypic (0.43 ± 0.02) correlation estimates were consistently obtained between diameter and Pilodyn penetration. This data argues for at least some form of pleiotropic relationship between these two traits and that selection for fast growth will adversely affect wood density in this population. Estimates of the across-site genetic correlations for diameter and Pilodyn penetration were high, indicating that the genotype by environment interaction is low across the range of sites tested. This result supports the use of single aggregated selection criteria for growth and wood density across planting environments in Portugal, as opposed to having to select for performance in different environments.  相似文献

Genetic parameter estimates for pre-weaning weight traits in Dorper sheep   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Genetic parameters were estimated for birth-, 42-day, and 100-day (weaning) weight in the Dorper flock of the Glen Agricultural Institute in South Africa. Direct heritability estimates of 0.11, 0.28 and 0.20 and maternal heritability estimates of 0.10, 0.10 and 0.10 were obtained for body weights at birth, 42 and 100 days, respectively. The corresponding genetic correlation estimates between direct and maternal effects were 0.35, −0.63 and −0.58, respectively. Both direct and maternal genetic correlation estimates among the traits were of moderate to high magnitude and positive. It is concluded that the traits can be improved by selection with no serious antagonisms among traits studied.  相似文献

Improving feed efficiency in dairy cattle by animal breeding has started in the Nordic countries. One of the two traits included in the applied Saved feed index is called maintenance and it is based on the breeding values for metabolic BW (MBW). However, BW recording based on heart girth measurements is decreasing and recording based on scales is increasing only slowly, which may weaken the maintenance index in future. Therefore, the benefit of including correlated traits, like carcass weight and conformation traits, is of interest. In this study, we estimated genetic variation and genetic correlations for eight traits describing the energy requirement for maintenance in dairy cattle including: first, second and third parity MBW based on heart girth measurements, carcass weight (CARW) and predicted MBW (pMBW) based on predicted slaughter weight, and first parity conformation traits stature (ST), chest width (CW) and body depth (BD). The data consisted of 21 329 records from Finnish Ayrshire and 9 780 records from Holstein cows. Heritability estimates were 0.44, 0.53, 0.56, 0.52, 0.54, 0.60, 0.17 and 0.26 for MBW1, MBW2, MBW3, CARW, pMBW, ST, CW and BD, respectively. Estimated genetic correlations among MBW traits were strong (>0.95). Genetic correlations between slaughter traits (CARW and pMBW) and MBW traits were higher (from 0.77 to 0.90) than between conformation and MBW traits (from 0.47 to 0.70). Our results suggest that including information on carcass weight and body conformation as correlated traits into the maintenance index is beneficial when direct BW measurements are not available or are difficult or expensive to obtain.  相似文献

Genetic parameters and (co)variance components were estimated for weights at birth and at 30, 90 and 180 days of age for Draa goat maintained at Ouarzazate station over a period of 18 years (1988–2005). Records of 1498 kids, the progeny of 46 sires and 404 dams were used in the study. Analyses were carried out by restricted maximum likelihood. Six different animal models including or ignoring maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects were fitted for all traits. The Model 2 with only permanent environmental maternal effects seemed most suitable. Estimates of direct heritability from this model were 0.16 for birth weight and 0.07, 0.11 and 0.11 for weights at 30, 90 and 180 days, respectively. Maternal heritability estimates varied from 0.00 to 0.24 for all traits according to the model used (Models 4–6). Bivariate analysis by Model 2 was also used to estimate genetic correlations between traits. The estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations among weights were positive and intermediate to high in value. Despite the low estimated heritabilities of body weight traits of Draa goat, there is a small genetic variability that may be exploited to improve growth performance.  相似文献

The genetic relationship between vegetative growth at low temperatures and productivity was investigated for strawberries grown in controlled and field environments. Genotypes from 20 biparental crosses were grown in controlled environments with 11°, 14°, and 17 °C days, 11 °C nights, and 11-h daylength to simulate a range of winter growing conditions expected in mediterranean environments. Individual plants were scored for two initial runner traits and eight vegetative growth traits. Significant main effects of temperature and cross were detected for all growth chamber traits, and conservative estimates of the broad sense heritability (h2) for these traits were 0.10–0.28. None of the temperature x cross interaction effects were significant, suggesting that genetic potential for vegetative growth and vigor is expressed similarly at low and optimal growing temperatures. Highly significant genetic correlations were detected between many growth chamber trait pairs, indicating pleiotropic effects for the genes that condition these traits. Complementary field trials were established, and individual plants were scored for traits that describe yield, production pattern, and plant size. Significant negative genetic correlations were detected between traits that describe growth in the chambers and early production in the field trials, but genetic correlations between chamber growth traits and mid-season or total production were significantly positive and occasionally large. Several of the yield and field growth variables were genetically correlated to initial runner plant traits, suggesting that indirect selection using traits scored in the nursery can be used to improve yield and modify production pattern in the field.  相似文献

For most complex traits, results from genome-wide association studies show that the proportion of the phenotypic variance attributable to the additive effects of individual SNPs, that is, the heritability explained by the SNPs, is substantially less than the estimate of heritability obtained by standard methods using correlations between relatives. This difference has been called the “missing heritability”. One explanation is that heritability estimates from family (including twin) studies are biased upwards. Zuk et al. revisited overestimation of narrow sense heritability from twin studies as a result of confounding with non-additive genetic variance. They propose a limiting pathway (LP) model that generates significant epistatic variation and its simple parametrization provides a convenient way to explore implications of epistasis. They conclude that over-estimation of narrow sense heritability from family data (‘phantom heritability’) may explain an important proportion of missing heritability. We show that for highly heritable quantitative traits large phantom heritability estimates from twin studies are possible only if a large contribution of common environment is assumed. The LP model is underpinned by strong assumptions that are unlikely to hold, including that all contributing pathways have the same mean and variance and are uncorrelated. Here, we relax the assumptions that underlie the LP model to be more biologically plausible. Together with theoretical, empirical, and pragmatic arguments we conclude that in outbred populations the contribution of additive genetic variance is likely to be much more important than the contribution of non-additive variance.  相似文献

A set of eight unlinked microsatellite markers was used to estimate relatedness among 355 individuals of a Pinus radiata breeding population. The average performance of open-pollinated progeny of each individual, for wood density, was considered to represent the phenotype of all 355 individuals. Marker-based estimates of relationship were compared with the pedigree-based coefficients of relationships. The phenotypic similarity among all pairs of individuals was regressed on marker-estimated relatedness to estimate the inheritance of wood density. The marker-based estimate of heritability was compared with that obtained using classical quantitative genetic methods. Overall, a low correlation (0.13) was observed between marker-based and pedigree-based estimates of relatedness. After discarding negative estimates of relatedness, the average coefficient of relationship among known groups of maternal half-sibs, full-sibs and unrelated individuals, increased from 0.24 to 0.29 (0.25 expected), from 0.43 to 0.48 (0.50 expected) and from –0.04 to 0.15 (0 expected), respectively. Marker-based and conventional estimates of heritability of wood density were 0.79 and 0.38, respectively. However, by using only marker loci with expected Hardy–Weinberg frequencies, marker-based estimate of heritability was 0.33, which is very similar to that obtained from conventional approaches. The use of molecular markers to understand quantitative genetic variation is discussed.  相似文献

The identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) based on anchor markers, especially candidate genes that control a trait of interest, has been noted to increase the power of QTL detection. Since these markers can be scored as co-dominant data, they are also valuable for comparing and integrating the QTL linkage maps from diverse mapping populations. To estimate the position and effects of QTLs linked to oil yield traits in African oil palm, co-dominant microsatellites (SSR) and candidate gene-based sequence polymorphisms were applied to construct a linkage map for a progeny showing large differences in oil yield components. The progeny was genotyped for 97 SSR markers, 93 gene-linked markers, and 12 non-gene-linked SNP markers. From these, 190 segregating loci could be arranged into 31 linkage groups while 12 markers remained unmapped. Using the single marker linkage, interval mapping and multiple QTL methods, 16 putative QTLs on seven linkage groups affecting important oil yield related traits such as fresh fruit bunch yield (FFB), ratio of oil per fruit (OF), oil per bunch (OB), fruit per bunch (FB) and wet mesocarp per fruit (WMF) could be identified in the segregating population with estimated values for explained variance ranging from 12.4 % to 54.5 %. Markers designed from some candidate genes involved in lipid biosynthesis were found to be mapped near significant QTLs for various economic yield traits. Associations between QTLs and potential candidate genes are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Four lines of mice were formed from a common base population and selected for 37 generations for either increased 3-week weight (weaning weight), 6-week weight, 3–6 week gain, or maintained as a randomly bred control line. Realised heritability estimates for short-term (long-term) responses were 0.33±0.20 (0.07±0.10), 0.46±0.14 (0.26±0.09), 0.36±0.14 (0.24±0.11) for 3-week weight, 6-week weight and 3–6 week gain, respectively. Realised genetic correlations estimated from short-term (long-term) responses were 0.23±0.08 (0.35±0.10) between 3-week weight and 3–6 week gain; 0.82±0.04 (0.58±0.08) between 3-week weight and 6-week weight; and 0.81±0.04 (0.97±0.04) between 3–6 week gain and 6-week weight. The genetic correlation between 3-week weight and 6-week weight was asymmetric with a greater correlated response for 3-week weight when selecting for 6-week weight (1.06) than vice versa (0.63).  相似文献

The objective of the study presented here was to analyze the genetic relationships among heifer pregnancy (HP), age at first calving (AFC), stayability (STAY), average annual productivity of the cow, in kilograms of weaned calf per cow per year (PRODAM), postweaning weight gain (PWG), and hip height (HH) of Nelore females from 12 Brazilian herds. (Co)variance components were obtained by six-trait animal model using Gibbs sampling. The posterior mean of the heritability estimates were 0.37, 0.18, 0.19, 0.16, 0.21, and 0.37 for HP, AFC, STAY, PRODAM, PWG, and HH, respectively. In general, the genetic correlations were strong between traits related to reproduction, for example, −0.85 between HP and AFC, and 0.94 between STAY and PRODAM. Weak genetic correlations were obtained between reproductive and growth traits (absolute values ranging from 0.02 to 0.30). Although weak, the genetic correlations between PWG and reproductive traits were favorable, whereas the genetic correlations between HH and reproductive traits were close to zero and slightly unfavorable for HP, AFC, and STAY. An increase of HH is therefore expected to have little or no negative effect on the reproductive performance of females. The posterior mean of genetic correlation between PWG and HH was moderate (0.50). On the basis of the heritability, genetic correlation estimates, and time to obtain data, HP and PRODAM seems to show the best potential as selection criteria to improve the productive and reproductive performance of Nelore females. In principle, it is possible to select for increased PWG without compromising the reproduction of Nelore females. However, selection for PWG may result in an increase of female HH as a correlated response, a fact that could increase management costs in advanced generations of selection. In the light of the results, all traits studied here can be used as selection criteria and there is no strong evidence of genetic antagonism among traits related to reproduction and growth of Nelore females.  相似文献

Summary The F2 potential of single and three-way crosses was evaluated using a set of physiological and yield components. Results were based on an index of selection using (a) only yield components and (b) both physiological and yield components. The indices were constructed using the percentage improvement of F2 over the better parent of the corresponding F1 cross for every character. The performance of F2 plants assessed by the expected value of the regression index was ranked in descending order to provide a ranked F2 distribution (FRD). The FRD was divided into four equal parts, T25 (top 25%), T50 (26–50%), T75 (51–75%) and T100 (76–100%). F3 families derived from F2 plants in T25 were found to provide a higher frequency of selections for pod number than T50, T75 and T100. The frequency of selections was higher in three-way than single crosses. Selection index based on physiological and yield components was more efficient in trapping F2 plants providing selections in F3 than the index based on yield components only. The results brought out the importance of bunch x bunch crosses as a complement to the usually advocated bunch x runner ones.  相似文献

Estimation of genetic parameters for post-weaning traits of Kermani sheep   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for post-weaning traits in Kermani sheep. Traits were included 6-month weight (6MW), 9-month weight (9MW), yearling weight (YW), greasy fleece weight at first shearing (GFW) and greasy fleece weights at various shearings (RFW). Data and pedigree information used in this research were collected at Breeding Station of Kermani sheep during 1993–2004. Genetic parameters were estimated with single- and multi-traits analysis using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedures, under animal models. Log likelihood ratio test indicated the most appropriate model for 6MW and 9MW should included direct additive genetic effects as well as maternal permanent environmental effects. However the most appropriate model for YW and GFW had only the direct additive genetic effects. The effects of sex, age of dam and year of birth were significant on body weight traits (P < 0.01). GFW was influenced significantly by sex and year of birth (P < 0.01) but was not affected by age of dam (P > 0.05). Type of birth was no significant effect on studied traits (P > 0.05). Also, the age of lamb at weighing time was a significant influence on 6MW, 9MW and YW. Direct heritability estimates for 6MW, 9MW, YW and GFW were 0.32, 0.03, 0.15 and 0.15, respectively. Maternal permanent environmental estimates of 0.09 were obtained for 6MW and 9MW. Genetic correlation estimates between mentioned traits ranged from 0.51 to 0.99. Phenotypic correlations were generally lower than those of genetic correlation and varied from 0.05 to 0.79 for various traits. The environmental correlations estimates between GFW with growth traits were low, but between other traits were positive and high, ranged from 0.54 to 0.72. The value of repeatability estimated for greasy fleece weight was 0.22.  相似文献

Seven innate immune parameters were investigated in 64 full-sib families (the offspring of 64 sires and 45 dams) from two year-classes of farmed rohu carp (Labeo rohita). Survival rates were also available from Aeromonas hydrophila infection (aeromoniasis) recorded in controlled challenge tests on a different sample of individuals from the same families. Due to strong confounding between the animal additive genetic effect and the family effects (common environmental + non-additive genetic), reliable additive (co)variance components and hence heritabilities and genetic correlations could not be obtained for the investigated parameters. Therefore, estimates of the association of challenge test survival with the studied immune parameters were obtained as product moment correlations between family least square means. These correlations revealed statistically significant (p < 0.05) negative correlations of survival with bacterial agglutination titre (−0.48), serum haemolysin titre (−0.29) and haemagglutination titre (−0.34); and significant positive correlation with ceruloplasmin level (0.51). The correlations of survival to aeromoniasis with myeloperoxidase activity, superoxide production and lysozyme activity were found to be not significantly different from zero (p > 0.05). Assuming that the negatively correlated candidate traits are not favourable as indirect selection criteria, the results suggest that ceruloplasmin level could potentially be a marker for resistance to aeromoniasis in rohu. The use of this immune parameter as an indirect selection criterion for increased resistance to aeromoniasis in rohu will, however, require that the parameter shows significant additive genetic variation and a significant genetic correlation with survival. Further studies are therefore needed to obtain a reliable heritability estimate for ceruloplasmin and its genetic correlation with survival from aeromoniasis.  相似文献

Two hundred and fifty doubled haploid lines were studied from a cross between two 2-row winter barley varieties. The lines were evaluated for several characters in a field experiment for 3 years on two locations with two replications. From a total of 431 RFLP probes 50 were found to be polymorphic and subsequently used to construct a linkage map. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were determined and localized for resistance against Rhynchosporium secalis and Erysiphe graminis, for lodging, stalk breaking and ear breaking tendency, for the physical state before harvest, plant height, heading date, several kernel parameters and kernel yield. The heritability of the traits ranged from 0.56 to 0.89. For each trait except for kernel thickness, QTLs have been localized that explain 5–52% of the genetic variance. Transgressive segregation occurred for all of the traits studied.  相似文献

Genetic analysis of ewe productivity traits in Moghani sheep   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Genetic and environmental (co)variance components for productivity traits in Moghani sheep were estimated using data from 1344 ewes. The data were collected in the Jafarabad breeding station, north-east of Iran, during a 13-year period (1995-2008). The studied traits were litter size at birth (LSB), litter size at weaning (LSW), litter mean weight per lamb born (LMWLB), litter mean weight per lamb weaned (LMWLW), total litter weight at birth (TLWB) and total litter weight at weaning (TLWW). A model including direct additive genetic effects as well as permanent environmental effects related to repeated records of ewe was the most appropriate model for all the studied traits. Genetic parameters were estimated applying restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure. Direct heritability estimate for LSB, LSW, LMWLB, LMWLW, TLWB and TLWW were 0.11, 0.02, 0.15, 0.07, 0.07 and 0.06, respectively. Corresponding values for repeatability estimates were 0.16, 0.19, 0.18, 0.11, 0.13 and 0.09. Genetic correlations between the studied traits ranged from −0.99 for LSB-LMWLB and LSW-LMWLB to 0.99 for LSB-TLWB. Phenotypic and environmental correlation estimates were generally lower than those of genetic ones. Estimates of permanent environmental correlation among traits were positive and medium to high. Although low direct heritabilities were estimated for the reproductive traits, as these traits are of interest then they should be included in a breeding program.  相似文献

Summary Four quantitative traits were studied by analysing F2 data derived from a 9 × 9 diallel cross utilizing widely divergent, inbred, erect cultivars of peanuts, A. hypogaea. Bidirectional dominance was found in the traits total pod yield per plant and number of days from planting to first flower; in pod size, the alleles giving small pods were consistently dominant and for high tops' weight, dominance and overdominance were found. The high heritability of pod yield/plant (0.79) indicates that breeding for higher yield/plant can succeed if large F2 populations are grown and rigorous visual selection combined with progeny testing are employed. The genetic correlations of pod yield/plant with other traits were low. Breeding for plants with large (jumbo) pods can be aided by the fact that they are homozygous recessive, or nearly so. Simultaneous breeding for high yields and large pods is possible: there was a positive (but low) genetic correlation between the two (0.16). A modification by which less biased estimates of the number of effective factors can be obtained and a possible relationship between bidirectional dominance and genic interaction were proposed.  相似文献

Genetic parameters (narrow-sense heritabilities and genetic correlations) were estimated for major agronomical traits in apple from large unbalanced data sets, with the help of wide-pedigree information. The software REML VCE (Groeneveld 1996) took into account the complex pedigree of the French apple-breeding population, thanks to the restricted maximum likelihood procedure combined with the construction of the entire relationship matrix between hybrids planted in the field and their ancestors. Narrow-sense heritability estimates ranged from 0.34 to 0.68 for traits exhibiting a normal distribution. Heritability values around 0.35–0.40 were obtained for fruit characteristics (size, texture, flavour, juice content, attractiveness, russeting). Higher values of heritability were obtained for vigour, assessed by the circumference of the trunk (0.51), and powdery mildew resistance (0.68). Additive genetic correlations between traits were also estimated, showing a very high relationship between fruit-quality traits. Vigour and powdery mildew resistance were slightly correlated with the other traits. Utilization of the ‘individual genetic model’ for the estimation of genetic parameters and breeding values in apple is discussed. Received: 14 June 1997 / Accepted: 4 December 1997  相似文献

Genetic improvement programme will only be successful when accompanied by a good understanding of the influence of different environmental factors, knowledge of the genetic parameters and the genetic relationships between the traits of interest. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of non-genetic factors on growth traits and Kleiber ratios and to estimate genetic parameters for early growth traits in Dorper × indigenous crossbred sheep. The effects of fixed factors were analysed by the general linear model procedure of statistical analysis system, while the genetic parameters were estimated using a WOMBAT computer program fitted animal model. The overall least-square mean for birth weight (BRW), weaning weight (3MW), six-month weight, nine-month weight, and yearling weight were 3.03 ± 0.02, 14.5 ± 0.18, 20.4 ± 0.26, 24.8 ± 0.31, and 28.3 ± 0.40 kg, respectively. The overall least-square mean for Kleiber ratio from birth to weaning (KR1), weaning to six months, six to nine months and nine months to yearling age were 16.8 ± 0.10, 6.41 ± 0.17, 4.55 ± 0.21 and 3.38 ± 0.20 g/kg of metabolic weight, respectively. The inclusion of maternal genetic effect had a significant influence on BRW, and it explains 20% of the phenotypic variation. The total heritability estimates for BRW, 3MW, birth to weaning average daily weight gain and KR1 were 0.10, 0.14, 0.16 and 0.12, respectively. The phenotypic correlation varied from ?0.11 ± 0.05 to 0.98 ± 0.02, whereas the direct genetic correlation ranged from ?0.32 ± 0.40 to 0.98 ± 0.17. The mean inbreeding coefficient was 0.105% with an annual rate of 0.02%. The heritability estimates for growth traits and Kleiber ratio suggest that slow genetic progress would be expected from the selection. However, the integration of selection with crossbreeding programme can enhance genetic gain. Therefore, selection should be conducted based on breeding values estimated from multiple information sources to increase the selection response.  相似文献

Restricted maximum likelihood was used to estimate genetic parameters of male and female wing and thorax length in isofemale lines ofDrosophila melanogaster, and results compared to estimates obtained earlier with the classical analysis of variance approach. As parents within an isofemale line were unknown, a total of 500 parental pedigrees were simulated and mean estimates computed. Full and half sibs were distinguished, in contrast to usual isofemale studies in which animals were all treated as half sibs and hence heritability was overestimated. Heritability was thus estimated at 0.33, 0.38, 0.30 and 0.33 for male and female wing length and male and female thorax length, respectively, whereas corresponding estimates obtained using analysis of variance were 0.46, 0.54, 0.35 and 0.38. Genetic correlations between male and female traits were 0.85 and 0.62 for wing and thorax length, respectively. Sexual dimorphism and the ratio of female to male traits were moderately heritable (0.30 and 0.23 for wing length, 0.38 and 0.23 for thorax length). Both were moderately and positively correlated with female traits, and weakly and negatively correlated with male traits. Such heritabilities confirmed that sexual dimorphism might be a fast evolving trait inDrosophila. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献
