We examined the effects of dams on freshwater fish species based on data collected during 1990–2004 from 200 drainage systems in Japan. Of the 76 fish species examined, the occurrence of 20 species within Petromyzontidae, Cyprinidae, Cobitididae, Salmonidae, Cottidae, and Gobiidae was negatively affected by the presence of dams located in the downstream reaches of fish survey sites, whereas the occurrence of 12 species within Cyprinidae, Adrianichthyidae, Centrarchidae, and Gobiidae was positively associated with the presence of dams. A significantly higher proportion of the fishes with a negative damming effect were diadromous species as compared to the fishes with a positive damming effect. Conversely, the latter group had a significantly higher proportion of nonnative species than the former. A significant interaction existed between the effects of damming and the effects of elevation on family-specific species richness. Families dominated by native migratory species showed a greater reduction in the number of species above dams at lower elevations, whereas families represented primarily by nonnative species had higher species richness above dams at higher elevations, except for Centrarchidae, which was always higher in species richness above dams regardless of elevation. Based on our findings, dams in Japan have adversely affected native freshwater fishes by blocking their migration routes, favoring nonnative fishes, or altering existing habitats.  相似文献

Distribution of the freshwater fishes of Japan: an historical overview   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Japanese freshwater fishes, including lampreys, comprise 15 orders, 35 families, and 96 genera, with 211 species and subspecies. Most belong to the families Cyprinidae (29% of species and subspecies), Gobiidae (21%), Salmonidae (10%), and Cobitidae (8%). Cyprinids and cobitids presumably originated from east Asia, gobiids from southeast Asia, and cottids and salmonids from the north Pacific. Japanese freshwater fishes include 88 endemic species and subspecies, of which three have been extirpated. Fishes introduced into natural rivers and lakes for inland commercial fisheries and sport fishing, and by accident, include many exotic species, of which 23 now inhabit natural freshwaters. These often have destroyed the local fish fauna by predation, and caused genetic pollution by hybridization with local strains. Destruction of freshwater environments by land development also poses a threat to Japanese freshwater fish communities. In addition Japanese freshwater systems have been markedly altered by development of rice paddy fields which have caused some species to decline but others to flourish, and changed the distribution patterns of fishes between upstream and downstream areas. To conserve endangered species and declining communities of Japanese freshwater fishes, we need to clarify the characteristics of their original habitats and the effects of developing paddy fields, from both the ecological and historical points of view.  相似文献

Fish diversity and distributions in 33 streams of the Amanos Mountains were investigated between December 2002 and November 2003. Some physical and chemical parameters, such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, pH, and velocity of the streams were measured periodically at each site. The study area was grouped into three regions: AS (Asi Basin), IS (?skenderun Gulf) and CE (Çevlik region). Fish abundance and Shannon Diversity Index were computed for each region. CE region was the poorest compared to the others in terms of fish abundance and diversity. A total of nine species in four families (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Anguillidae, Blenniidae) were recorded and all species collected were found to be indigenous. Capoeta barroisi (42.2%) and Garra rufa (33.3%) were the most common and abundant species and Salaria fluviatilis (0.4%), Carasobarbus luteus (0.9%), Anguilla anguilla (1.0%) and Alburnus sellal (1.2%) were the most rarely encountered species in the Amanos Mts. The endangered species Alburnus orontis is also rarely found. Fish diversity was greater in perennial streams (0.62) than in intermittent streams (0.27). There are many adverse human impacts on fish fauna in the Amanos Mountain streams; however, numbers of intermittent streams impose the greatest threat to fish in the Amanos Mts.  相似文献

The associations of the butterfly fauna of the Japanese islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Ryukyu Rett are analysed with respect to one another and to the fauna of the far-east U.S.S.R. A faunal discontinuity exists between the fauna of Ryukyu Rett and all other areas. The fauna of Ryukyu Rett can be considered as being of the Oriental region, the faunas of the other Japanese islands as being of the Palaearctic region. This view was reinforced with conclusions drawn from MacArthus&Wilson's theory of island biogeography (1963, 1967). The divergence of die faunas of the Japanese islands is dependent on their isolation - the further the distance between islands, the greater the isolation and the greater the faunal divergence. Thus the fauna of all silands of Japan, except of the Ryukyu Rett, have a close association with the far-east Russian fauna. There is a greater similarity between these faunas than between the fauna of the islands of Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku with respect to that of Ryukyu Rett.  相似文献

Synopsis The composition and consistency of fish assemblages in 14 adjacent pools (6–120 m long) of a clear-water, limestone and gravel creek in midwestern U.S.A. were quantified in eight snorkeling surveys over 19 months, to establish a baseline of natural variation in the system at this scale. The fauna of the stream was dominated numerically by minnows (Cyprinidae), sunfish and black bass (Centrarchidae), and topminnows (Fundulidae). The pool fish fauna of the total 1 km reach (including all 14 pools) was highly consistent throughout the study, despite two major floods. Assemblages in individual pools generally were consistent, but there was more variation within pools than at the scale of the entire reach. Throughout the study, most individual pools remained within discrete subsets of the total occupied multivariate space in a principal components analysis based on fish species abundances. Sunfishes (Lepomis spp.) and bass (Micropterus spp.) were more consistent in their distribution among pools than were minnows (Cyprinidae) or a topminnow (Fundulus). There were 25 significant correlations in occurrence of species pairs among stream pools, out of 91 possible comparisons of the 14 most abundant taxa in the reach. Many pools contained assemblages either dominated by large centrarchids or by abundant cyprinids and juvenile centrarchids, but intermediate assemblages also were observed. The dynamics of distribution of fish species and fish assemblages among individual stream pools are likely influenced by a combination of species-specific behaviors and habitat selection, predator constraints on use of individual pools by small fishes, riffles as size-selective barriers to fish movements between pools, dispersal of young-of-the-year fishes, and abiotic phenomena like floods. Individual stream pools appear to be discrete habitat units for fishes, and do represent an appropriate scale for biologically meaningful studies of fish assemblages or their effects on streams.Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma  相似文献

The Lancang-Mekong River basin contains a diverse assemblage of freshwater fish species; however, their populations are threatened by current and planned dam construction along the river. Fish assemblages are sensitive indicators of environmental degradation and can be used to assess aquatic ecosystem health. This research compared the fish fauna at the Xiaowan hydropower dam located on the middle reaches of the Lancang-Mekong River at three time periods: in 2008 (before impoundment), 2010 (water storage) and 2011 (full operation). A modified fish index of biological integrity (modified F-IBI) was developed and it synthesized information on the taxonomic composition, trophic guilds, and tolerance levels of the fish and habitat diversity to quantitatively assess the condition of fish populations before and after damming. This index also was used to assess the longitudinal diversity of the fish fauna along the river channel and could assess the barrier effect associated with the dam. Jaccard's index of similarity was used as a feasible tool to assess fish diversity loss and biotic homogenization. The analysis clearly showed a homogenization of the fish communities after damming, and the reservoir impoundment region showed much more serious homogenization than the downstream region. The Xiaowan dam had an immediate and profound effect on the fish fauna in this region of the Lancang-Mekong River. A total of eight cascading dams are planned for development in this region, and, unless conservation mitigation efforts are considered, the results could be devastating on the native fish populations of middle reaches of the Lancang-Mekong River basin.  相似文献

We have conducted a preliminary study of tidal and diurnal variations in the distribution of dominant larval and juvenile fishes in the Chikugo River inlet (Ariake Bay, Kyushu, Japan) to determine whether selective tidal stream transport (STST) occurs. Larval and juvenile fish were collected from the mesohaline zone of the Chikugo River inlet during spring 2002. Temperature, salinity, depth, and current velocity were measured. Larval and juvenile abundance were compared among four tidal conditions, flooding tide, high tide, ebbing tide, and low tide, and between day and night. A total of 12 families, 15 species, and 5,577 individuals were collected. Temperature did not vary significantly with tidal conditions whereas salinity, depth, and current velocity varied significantly. Salinity also was correlated significantly and positively with depth. The abundance of most of the fishes was correlated positively and significantly with salinity and depth. Lateolabrax japonicus, Trachidermus fasciatus, Acanthogobius hasta, and other gobiid larvae (Gobiidae spp.) were significantly more abundant during high tide; in contrast, Coilia nasus and Neosalanx reganius were most abundant during low tide. The abundance of most of the fishes was higher during high tides at night than during the day, indicating the existence of STST, which may be strategically associated with ascending progress to upstream nursery areas.  相似文献

In this study, patterns in the taxonomic richness and composition of the fish fauna inhabiting Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows were described across their entire distribution range in the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Specifically, the study tested whether there are differences in the composition of fish assemblages between those ecoregions encompassed by the distribution range of C. nodosa, and whether these differences in composition are connected with differences in bioclimatic affinities of the fish faunas. A literature review resulted in a total of 19 studies, containing 22 fish assemblages at 18 locations. The ichthyofauna associated with C. nodosa seagrass meadows comprises 59 families and 188 species. The western Mediterranean (WM) Sea has the highest species richness (87 species). Fish assemblages from the Macaronesia–Canary Islands, the Sahelian Upwelling, South European Atlantic Shelf and the WM differ, in terms of assemblage composition, relative to other ecoregions. In contrast, the composition of the fish fauna from the central and eastern Mediterranean overlaps. There is a significant serial correlation in fish assemblage composition between adjacent ecoregions along the distribution range of C. nodosa. Dissimilarities in assemblage composition are connected with the geographical separation between locations, and the mean minimum annual seawater temperature is the environmental factor that explains most variation in fish assemblage composition.  相似文献

Seventeen species and sub-species of fishes belonging to four families (Cyprinidae, Clariidae, Aplocheilidae, Cichlidae) were known to occur in perennial bodies of water in the Sahara desert. The study of fishes collected in Lake Boukou near Ounianga Serir (Borkou, northern Chad) shows, for the first time, the occurrence in the Sahara desert of relict populations of Polypterus senegalus (Polypteridae) and Poropanchax normani (Poeciliidae). The Cichlidae Tilapia zilli was also collected in this lake. With these new records, the relict fish fauna currently known in lakes and gueltas of the Borkou plateaus comprises six species. In the Ennedi Mountains, where the specific status of Barbus populations was unclear, B. macrops was collected in Bachikere guelta. The toad Amietophrynus regularis was collected in Ounianga Kebir.  相似文献

Aim The scale of observation is important in detecting the spatial variation of biological assemblages, which should be taken into consideration for an appropriate plan of biogeographical conservation. We investigated whether (1) World Wildlife Fund’s ecoregion units are the appropriate scale for conserving ant diversity in Iran, (2) each ecoregion represents a distinct ant community composition and (3) patterns of diversity partitioning differ among four ecoregions. Location Iran, a sampling transect along four arid and semi‐arid ecoregions. Methods We applied hierarchical partitioning to data collected from a nested sampling design including four hierarchical levels: ‘local’, ‘landscape’, ‘ecoregional’ and ‘whole‐region’. Observed alpha and beta diversity components were compared with values of null distributions. Hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to evaluate similarity of ant species composition among ecoregions. Results Partitioning of whole‐region species richness showed that 85% of the species richness was generated by beta diversity among ecoregions and landscapes. The highest value of diversity was generated by beta diversity among ecoregions. Unlike whole‐region partitioning, separate partitioning within each ecoregion revealed that beta component among localities contributed to species richness of each ecoregion. Ecoregions showed different patterns of diversity partitioning. The alpha component contributed largely to the total diversity of two ecoregions, but for two other ecoregions, beta component contributed more than alpha component. Cluster analysis identified four discrete ant species compositions; however, it split landscapes of one ecoregion into two distinct groups. Main conclusions Whole‐region diversity partitioning indicates that ecoregions represent the appropriate scale for conserving ant diversity and that each ecoregion has a distinct ant fauna. However, different conservation strategies should be considered for different ecoregions owing to the differing scales of variation within them. Boundaries of ecoregions remain a subject for further studies. The influence of climate change on ecoregional boundaries should be considered and should be predicted with respect to future conservation maps.  相似文献

We tested the regional-scale latitudinal patterns of occurrence and community structure of rocky tidepool fishes in relation to local environmental factors, particularly substrate characteristics. Data were derived from intensive field observations conducted on 36 shore sites spread across ca. 1,000 km north–south (24°03′N–32°45′N) in the south-western Japan. While numbers of families, genera, species and individuals per unit area decreased with latitude, these were dependent on substrate types: sites with non-limestone rock substrates tended to harbour larger numbers than limestone sites at the same latitude. Relative abundances of two dominant families (Blenniidae and Gobiidae) varied among sites with weak latitudinal gradients. Species-specific trends of latitudinal distribution were observed in most of the common intertidal fishes, with over half of the species demonstrating substrate-dependent variation. Species composition was clearly different between the Kyushu Island and the Ryukyus and also between limestone and non-limestone sites. Thus, our results clearly demonstrated that the regional-scale latitudinal trends of tidepool fish assemblages were partially dependent on local environmental characteristics (substrate types). Consideration was given to the influences of the Kuroshio Current and other factors including species interactions that might have helped modify observed latitudinal patterns.  相似文献

Changes of the quantitative and qualitative composition of ichthyoplankton off Mauritania (21–16° N) in different seasons of 1997–2008 are analyzed. In this area, pelagic eggs and larvae of over 120 fish species belonging to 71 families are recorded. In warm periods, the fish of the tropical fauna intensively spawn off Mauritania; round sardinella Sardinella aurita, West-African horse mackerel Trachurus trecae, and jack mackerel Caranx rhonchus are dominant. In cold periods, active spawning of fish belonging to the tropical fauna is recorded, the most abundant are European pilchard Sardina pilchardus, European horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus, and Atlantic mackerel Scomber japonicus. The spawning biomass of principal commercial fish species is calculated on the basis of the quantity of eggs laid by females. Environmental factors control fluctuations of abundance and distribution of ichthyoplankton in the considered region.  相似文献

Muscle myogens and eye lens proteins have been studied in ten species of freshwater fish from Iraq. The electrophoretic analysis revealed that the muscle myogens can be considered as a good taxonomic criterion to differentiate the family Mugilidae from the Cyprinodontidae and Cyprinidae, but not between the families Poeciliidae and Cyprinodontidae. Within the Cyprinidae the muscle myogens can be used to diferentiate Barbus grypus from the remaining species of this family. Eye lens proteins are not considered a good taxonomic criterion to differentiate the members of the four families studied, but can distinguish B. belawayei and B. grypus from the other Cyprinid species.  相似文献

The development of biomonitoring tools is increasingly appealing in light of the increasing degradation of aquatic ecosystems. In this context, we investigated the responses of stream fish communities to the gradient of environmental degradation in different basins using a variety of indices based on functional diversity, functional composition, and taxonomic diversity. We used datasets from three Brazilian ecoregions. In order to describe the gradient of environmental degradation we scored streams based on local and landscape variables. The functional structure of the assemblages was described in relation to seven functional traits related to habitat use, swimming capacity, and maneuverability. We described assemblages in each ecoregion separately in relation to 20 potential indicators, grouped in four families: indices of functional diversity based on presence/absence (FDp/a); indices of functional diversity weighted by abundance (FDabund); indices of functional composition (mT); and, indices based on taxonomic diversity (TDiv). The relationship between the indicators and the gradient of environmental degradation were evaluated using linear regression. We found a significant interaction effect (ANOVA, p = 0.006) between group of indices and ecoregions for the performance of indicators, suggesting a context-dependent response. The indices, on an individual basis, had variable performance and consistency among ecoregions. Four mT indicators demonstrated the highest average performance and consistency. Taxonomic diversity indicators consistently had the lowest average performance, while FDp/a and FDabund indicators had low average performance and variable inter-regional consistency. The differential inter-regional performance of indicators was due to the differences in the lengths of the gradients of environmental degradation. Our results indicate that functional traits have greater predictive power compared to taxonomic indicators for fish responses to a gradient of environmental degradation. Although indicators of functional composition are the most promising, we emphasize that caution is needed when generalizing functional diversity indicators across ecoregions because most of them are context-dependent.  相似文献

The present study investigated species richness, relative abundance, and short temporal variability of rockpool fish communities on the southwestern coast of Yaku-shima Island, northwestern Pacific. In total, 2,850 fish (total biomass approximately 3,400 g) representing 17 families and 54 species were collected from 16 rockpools from May 2009 to February 2010. Gobiidae (12 species), Blenniidae (10), Pomacentridae (6), and Labridae (5) were the dominant families; Blenniidae was the most abundant family (57.1 % of the total number of fish), followed by Gobiidae (30.1 %), Tripterygiidae (5.3 %), Labridae (3.2 %), and Pomacentridae (2.4 %). The Blenniidae accounted for more than 80.0 % of the community biomass. This dominance of Blenniidae and Gobiidae in the community reflects their diversity in the western Pacific and ability to adapt to rocky intertidal habitats. The mean density and species richness of rockpool fish decreased significantly in winter. This is attributed to a decrease in recruitment of transient and accidental visitor species into the rockpool environments, which in turn was due to a significant decline in water temperature in winter. However, mean diversity index (Simpson’s D) did not vary significantly across the seasons, because over 80.0 % of the total number of individuals in each season was from six common species (three blenniids, two gobiids, and a tripterygiid). It can be concluded that the community composition is generally stable over short time-scales. The biogeographic composition of this assemblage was compared with those of two other sites (cited from two past studies) in southern Japanese waters. These other sites were mostly composed of warm temperate species, with regard to the number of species and individuals, while tropical species were predominant in the assemblage at the southwestern coast of Yaku-shima Island. This result suggests that the warm Kuroshio Current has more influence on the Yaku-shima Island coastal fauna than it does on those of the other sites in southern Japanese waters.  相似文献

Luciola cruciata, a bioluminescent firefly endemic to Japan, communicates with species‐specific flashing patterns. Previous studies reported that flying males possess three distinct flashing frequencies: slow (4 s), intermediate (3 s) and fast (2 s). Our study focused on geographical variations in flashing patterns in the northwestern part of the Kyushu region of southern Japan (including its isolated islands) and their relationship to the mitochondrial COII region of firefly DNA. We found that “quick‐flash (1 s)” fireflies occur in the Goto Islands, at the western tip of Kyushu, and that, although they possess a unique haplotype, they do not differ much genetically from “fast‐flash” fireflies inhabiting mainland Kyushu. In contrast, although fireflies inhabiting the Tsushima and Iki Islands also possess a unique haplotype, their flashing patterns were the same (fast‐flash) as fireflies inhabiting mainland Kyushu. We determined that flash patterns of L. cruciata in Japan should be classified according to four flashing patterns: slow, intermediate, fast and quick.  相似文献

Based on the data collected from the Suichuan and Shushui Rivers, both tributaries of the Ganjiang River between April and July of 2015, the fish species identified were classified into 68 and 46 species, 14 and 12 families in the Suichuan River and Shushui River respectively. Cyprinidae is the most common family that accounts for 52.9% and 58.7% in the total number of fish species in the Suichuan River and Shushui River, respectively. The dominant species were Pseudohemiculter dispar, Squalidus argentatus, Silurus asotus and Leptobotia elongate for the Suichuan River and Squalidus argentatus, Acrossocheilus parallens, Pseudohemiculter dispar, Silurus asotus, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, Acrossocheilus fasciatus and Zacco platypus for the Shushui River. The diversity of fish species showed more abundant and diverse for the Suichuan River. The composition of ecotype of fish indicated the rich diversities of ecotype in both the Suichuan and Shushui Rivers. The tributary (Suichuan River) and main stream of the Ganjiang River demonstrated a highly fauna similarity and the fish resources indicated its significance to maintain the fish diversity in the middle of the Ganjiang River and its benefits to the existence of the fish species in mountain streams. Dam construction, sand excavation and heavy metal pollution are the most significant threat to fish diversity and ecosystem functioning in Ganjiang River basin. In order to protect fish diversity and fisheries more effectively, relevant laws should be strengthened and conservation areas should be established for the survival of freshwater fish species.  相似文献

Day–night shifts in the nearshore fish fauna of a temperate microtidal estuary were assessed using a holistic suite of structural and functional community attributes. Mean fish species richness and diversity (taxonomic distinctness) were higher at night across all regions of the estuary and seasons, concurring with the findings of numerous comparable studies reviewed worldwide, while the diel period in which mean abundance was higher varied among seasons. Likewise, species and functional guild compositions (the latter based on feeding modes and habitat use) both differed significantly between day and night, with the extent of the diel shift again varying seasonally. Daytime fish communities were characterized by higher abundances of Atherinidae, Sillaginidae and Mugilidae, while Gobiidae were far more abundant at night. Marked shifts in size composition were also evident, with smaller fishes (<100 mm total length, LT) being more prevalent during the day and larger fishes (≥200 mm LT) proportionally more abundant at night. The above diel shifts were feasibly related to a range of predator–prey interactions and feeding‐related movements, namely a nocturnal decrease in top‐order avian piscivory coupled with an increase in invertebrate prey availability, resulting in changes in the presence and catchability of certain fish species in shallow estuarine waters.  相似文献

Freshwater finfish biodiversity and conservation: an asian perspective   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aspects on biodiversity and conservation of the ichthyofauna in the Asian region, in comparison to that of Africa, Europe and North America have been relatively less documented. This paper attempts to evaluate the above aspects in the East, and South and Southeast Asia based on available information in the literature. The familial diversity in inland waters in Asia (121 families) is considerably higher than in African and Latin American. Also, the finfish faunal diversity of 21 major river basins in East, and South and Southeast Asian indicate that species diversity is not necessarily related to familial diversity. The fish fauna in the region considered presently is highly diverse with an estimated cumulative total of 7447 species. Amongst the freshwater fishes the dominant groups are cyprinids (Cyprinidae, about 1000 species), loaches (about 400 species) of the families Balitoridae and Cobitiidae, gobids (Gobiidae, 300 species), catfishes (Bagridae, about 100 species), and the Osphronemidae (85 species). In the region, 462 freshwater finfish species are reckoned to be threatened, accounting for 17.5% of the all finfish species in this status in the world. In the region there are 66 species that are critically endangered and/or endangered, of which 32 are cyprinids, 14 of which are endemic to Lake Lanao, Mindano Island, Philippines. The diversity of freshwater fish species in the region was significantly related to the land area of the different countries in the following manner:
. In addition, the fish species diversity in the major river basins of the region was also found to be positively related to the basin area:
. Based on above relationship, the predicted fish species richness did not necessarily correlate to river basin size, and rivers with small basins were shown to have high indices. The paper also attempts to evaluate the reasons affecting fish species diversity in the region and suggests mitigating measures.  相似文献
