Sex differences in the growth of the human bony pelvis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The study of individual patterns of longitudinal growth of the bony pelvic complex reveals the following findings concerning the sex differences in the growth of the bony pelvis. (1) The patterns of growth show the same individual variability and male-female overlap as the adult configuration of pelves. (2) The sex differences in the adult bony pelvis cannot be attributed to the differential response of one bone to sex hormone. (3) Sex differences develop from complicated variations in rates and direction of growth of local areas of the pelvic complex. (4) The superior functional division of the bony pelvis shows only one notable sex difference — the sexual dimorphism of the directional growth of the anterior one-half of the iliac crest. (5) The inferior functional division of the bony pelvis shows numerous local areas of sexually dimorphic growth, but the major sex differences result from the greater lateral migration of the ischia. (6) Of the regions showing definite sexual dimorphism in growth, the pelvic inlet and sciatic notch are the more variable because of their dependency on two separate anatomical systems for their final adult morphological configuration. The subpubic angle and length of the superior pubic ramus are directly associated with only one anatomical system, the enlargement of the pelvic cavity, thus, they show less variability and more definitive sex difference.  相似文献

We present the first cross-sectional organ weight by body weight reference standards for captive baboons (Papio hamadryas). Organ weight data were obtained from necropsy reports for 634 healthy, pedigreed, captive female and male baboons. From summary statistics we calculated and fit cross-sectional sex-specific percentile curves for: adrenals, brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, liver plus gall bladder, lungs, pancreas, pituitary gland, spleen, and thyroid gland in three kilogram body weight intervals and cross-sectional summary statistics by sex for each organ in one kilogram body weight intervals.  相似文献

Urinary excretion of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine was measured in a group of adult men and women of comparable age during recumbency and then during stimulation by upright posture. Urinary norepinephrine was found to be significantly higher in women (30.3 +/- 4.4 ng/min/m2 B.S.) than in men (18.3 +/- 2.7 ng/min/m2 B.S.) during recumbency; there was no significant sex difference in dopamine and epinephrine excretion. There was no apparent trend indicating a difference in urinary catecholamine excretion during the follicular or luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In response to upright posture, there was a significant decrease in the urinary dopamine-norepinephrine ratio in both sexes; the magnitude of the decrease was, however, significantly higher in men (-9.9 +/- 3.0) than in women (-2.05 +/- 0.72). The mechanisms of the sex differences in urinary catecholamine excretion are unknown. Clinical studies involving catecholamines have to take these sex differences into account.  相似文献

In many taxa, temporary nutritional shortage early in development can favour compensatory strategies that include elevated growth (‘compensatory growth’) and/or extension of the usual period of development (‘catch-up growth’) once conditions improve. The net gains from each strategy depend on the extent to which larger body size increases fitness relative to associated costs (e.g. long-term effects on adult performance, or a greater risk of juvenile mortality). These costs and benefits are likely to differ between the sexes due to sex-specific selection. We documented the responses of male and female mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) to 3 weeks of low food availability (7–28 days old) that restricted subsequent growth and morphology compared to control fish continuously reared on a high food diet (N = 635 fish total). Neither sex elevated their growth rate immediately after being returned to a normal diet compared to control fish. When measured over the entire period until maturation, however, females showed compensatory growth. Males did not. Both sexes also exhibited catch-up growth but the delay until maturation was significantly longer for males. Despite early growth restriction, both sexes eventually matured at almost the same size as control fish, although males had a significantly smaller gonopodium (a sexually selected trait) than that of control males. Reasons for these sex differences are discussed.  相似文献

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), PGF2alfa and PGD2 were synthetized from [1-14C]-arachidonic acid by rat kidney medulla microsomal fraction. The formation of each prostaglandin was significantly less in female animals than in males. The rate of inactivation of [3H]-PGF2alfa by kidney cortex cytosol was almost linear with the time of incubation during the first 30 min. The production of PGF2alfa metabolite (13,14-dihydro-15-keto PGF2alfa) was higher in male rats than in females.  相似文献

Background: The influence of male or female sex on newborn outcomes has been recognized for >30 years. Several studies have observed higher mortality and morbidity in males than in females. It is not clear how this sex difference is sustained in postnatal complications such as intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), especially in very low birth weight (VLBW) newborns. Objective: This study examined possible sex-related differences in IVH rates among VLBW neonates. Methods: In a retrospective observational study conducted in Hospital Privado, Córdoba, Argentina, data from 332 consecutive VLBW newborns in a 12-year period were reviewed. Maternal factors, labor and delivery characteristics, and neonatal parameters, including the results of cranial ultrasound examination to detect IVH, were compared for males and females. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: A total of 322 VLBW newborns were included, 168 males and 154 females. Compared with female neonates, male neonates had a higher risk of overall IVH (26.8% vs 9.7%; odds ratio [OR] = 3.4 [95% CI, 1.8–6.4]; P < 0.001) and for grades III or IV on the Papile scale (16.1% vs 1.9%; OR = 9.6 [95% CI, 2.9–32.5]; P < 0.001). In the multivariate logistic regression model, male sex sustained the association with a greater risk of IVH (OR = 6.8 [95% CI, 3.8–12.0]).Conclusions: IVH was significantly associated with male sex in these VLBW newborns. Because other factors affect these differences, further research is required.  相似文献

Human studies reported sex differences in size and shape of the corpus callosum. These observations have been contested. The purpose of the present study is to investigate possible sex differences in the corpus callosum of dogs. The entire brains including the medulla from 12 female and 9 male adult mongrel dogs were removed and weighed. Total and partial area measurements of the callosum were made from photographic tracings of its outline. The callosum was partitioned into 3 regions; anterior half, posterior half, posterior one-fifth. The total corpus callosum, anterior half, posterior half, and posterior fifth or splenium areas were measured. Sex differences were found. The anterior half, the posterior half, the posterior fifth, and the total callosum were significantly greater in absolute area in males than in females.  相似文献

To further understand how sex differences affect the development and maintenance of sensitization, 48 adult Fischer rats (24 female and 24 male) received chronic administration (14 days) of cocaine (15 mg/kg, i.p.) or saline or a challenge dose (7 days after chronic cocaine administration). Sex differences were observed in the development and maintenance of cocaine-induced total locomotor, ambulatory and rearing activity. Although, overall cocaine administration increased stereotypic activity in both male and female rats, female rats had significantly higher stereotypic activity than male rats across the three behavioral test days (1, 7 and 14). Female rats had statistically significant higher benzoylecognine levels after acute cocaine administration than male rats. However, no differences between male and female rats in benzoylecognine plasma levels were observed after chronic and challenge doses of cocaine administration. Interestingly, after acute and challenge cocaine administration, corticosterone levels were significantly higher in female rats when compared to male rats. This study confirms previous reports that there are sex differences in the behavioral response to cocaine. Moreover, this study expands previous studies by demonstrating that sex differences occur in only certain aspects of cocaine-induced behavioral activation and the development and maintenance of cocaine-induced behavioral sensitization.  相似文献

Human growth hormone (hGH) levels were measured during rest, prolonged treadmill exercise at 60% maximum O2 uptake (VO2max), and immediate recovery in four groups of subjects (n = 7/group), ages 21-30 yr, classified as male runners (MR), female runners (FR), male controls (MC), and female controls (FC) to determine whether sex differences in the hGH response are related to resting 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and/or cardiorespiratory endurance (CRE). Glucose (Glc), E2, and hGH levels were determined from serial blood samples taken from an intravenous catheter. Glc did not change significantly during exercise, but different trends for the runners (increases) vs. controls (decreases) resulted in higher (P less than 0.01) postexercise levels in the runners. Resting hGH was higher (P less than 0.05) in the FRs and FCs than the MRs and MCs, respectively, and continued to be higher in the FCs (vs. MCs) during the first 30 min of exercise. The MRs achieved higher peak hGH levels and exhibited higher values than the MCs throughout exercise and recovery. There were no statistically significant training differences in the females. The strongest predictors for peak hGH were absolute work load and group (runners vs. controls), both of which combined accounted for 32-36% of the variability (P less than 0.01) in hGH response. Significant sex-related variables (sex, resting E2) accounted for 11-19% of the variability in peak or percent change in hGH, with E2 having a positive effect at rest but a negative effect during exercise.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Genetic study of the height and weight process during infancy.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Longitudinal height and weight data from 4649 Dutch twin pairs between birth and 2.5 years of age were analyzed. The data were first summarized into parameters of a polynomial of degree 4 by a mixed-effects procedure. Next, the variation and covariation in the parameters of the growth curve (size at one year of age, growth velocity, deceleration of growth, rate of change in deceleration [i.e., jerk] and rate of change in jerk [i.e., snap]) were decomposed into genetic and nongenetic sources. Additionally, the variation in the estimated size at birth and at 2 years of age interpolated from the polynomial was decomposed into genetic and nongenetic components. Variation in growth was best characterized by a genetic model which included additive genetic, common environmental and specific environmental influences, plus effects of gestational age. The effect of gestational age was largest for size at birth, explaining 39% of the variance. The differences between monozygotic and dizygotic twin correlations were largest for size at 1 and 2 years of age and growth velocity of weight, which suggests that these parameters are more influenced by heritability than size at birth, deceleration and jerk. The percentage of variance explained by additive genetic influences for height at 2 years of age was 52% for females and 58% for males. For weight at 2 years of age, heritability was approximately 58% for both sexes. Variation in snap height for males was also mainly influenced by additive genetic factors, while snap for females was influenced by both additive genetic and common environmental factors. The correlations for the additive genetic and common environmental factors for deceleration and snap are large, indicating that these parameters are almost entirely under control of the same additive genetic and common environmental factors. Female jerk and snap, and also female height at birth and height at 2 years of age, are mostly under control of the same additive genetic factor.  相似文献

Summary Adrenal glands from orchectomized and ovariectomized rats, with and without replacement therapy, and also from intact controls of both sexes, were examined by autoradiography with 3H-thymidine. The labelling index after 1 or 2 nucleoside injections was higher in the zona glomerulosa of females than in male rats, while no differences were found in the fascicular and reticular zones. Orchiectomy increased the labelling index in the fascicular and reticular zones, an effect prevented by testosterone. Ovariectomy did not change the labelling index, while estradiol lowered it in the zona glomerulosa. Duration of the S phase was longer in the zona fasciculata cells of males than in females. Both orchiectomy and testosterone shortened this phase in cells of the zona fasciculata and zona reticularis. Ovariectomy prolonged the S phase in the zona fasciculata and shortened this time in the reticular zone, an effect reversed by estradiol. In the glomerular and fascicular zones, cell cycle time was longer in males than in females. Orchiectomy shortened this time in all adrenocortical zones, an effect reversed by testosterone. Ovariectomy shortened cell cycle time in the glomerular and reticular zones and prolonged it in the zona fasciculata; these effects were reversed by estradiol. Turnover rate in adrenocortical cells was markedly higher in females than in males, a difference due to testosterone which markedly decreased turnover rate.  相似文献

Capsule: Chick growth rates was sex-dependent in an Atlantic Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis population.

Aims: To describe the growth rate of Yellow-legged Gull chicks and sex-associated variations, and obtain a discriminant function to sex them using morphological data.

Methods: Fifty-two Yellow-legged Gull chicks from a colony in northern Iberia were measured for body mass, head and bill length, tarsus length and three other bill-length associated variables, from the hatching date up to the age of 36 days. Birds were sexed using DNA analysis.

Results: Using logistic models, chick growth rates was observed to be similar between the sexes, while the asymptote was higher among males for the majority of the variables. Discriminant analyses showed that the variable head+bill was very reliable to predict the sex of >80% of chicks at an early developmental stage, and 100% of chicks if combined with tarsus length and two more bill-length associated variables at the age of 35 days.

Conclusions: This is the first study using a discriminant analysis to sex Yellow-legged Gull chicks, and also the first to describe the growth function for the species. The growth rate varied between sexes because males showed higher asymptote values within the growth function.  相似文献

One of the stronger empirical generalizations to emerge from the study of genetic systems is that achiasmate meiosis, which has evolved 25–30 times, is always restricted to the heterogametic sex in dioecious species, usually the male. Here we collate data on quantitative sex differences in chiasma frequency from 54 species (4 hermaphroditic flatworms, 18 dioecious insects and vertebrates and 32 hermaphroditic plants) to test whether similar trends hold. Though significant sex differences have been observed within many species, only the Liliaceae show a significant sexual dimorphism in chiasma frequency across species, with more crossing over in embryo mother cells than in pollen mother cells; chiasma frequencies are unrelated to sex and gamety in all other higher taxa studied. Further, the magnitude of sexual dimorphism, independent of sign, does not differ among the three main ecological groups (dioecious animals, plants, and hermaphroditic animals), contrary to what would be expected if it reflected sex-specific selection on recombination. These results indicate that the strong trends for achiasmate meiosis do not apply to quantitative sex differences in recombination, and contradict theories of sex-specific costs and benefits. An alternative hypothesis suggests that sex differences may be more-or-less neutral, selection determining only the mean rate of recombination. While male and female chiasma frequencies are more similar than would be expected under complete neutrality, a less absolute form of the hypothesis is more difficult to falsify. In female mice the sex bivalent has more chiasmata for its length than the autosomes, perhaps compensating for the absence of recombination in males. Finally, we observe that chiasma frequencies in males and females are positively correlated across species, validating the use of only one sex in comparative studies of recombination.  相似文献
