It is well accepted that a low intensity/long duration isometric contraction induces more low frequency fatigue (LFF) compared to a high-intensity/short-duration contraction. However, previous reports examined the intensity/duration of the contraction but did not control the level of fatigue when concluding fatigue is task dependent. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a long duration/low intensity fatiguing contraction would induce greater LFF than a short duration/high-intensity contraction when the quadriceps muscle was fatigued to similar levels. Eighteen healthy male subjects performed quadriceps contractions sustained at 35% and 65% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) on separate days, until the tasks induced a similar amount of fatigue (force generating capacity=45% MVC). Double pulse torque to single pulse torque ratio (D/S ratio) was obtained before, immediately and 5min after fatigue along with the electromyographic (EMG) signal from vastus medialis (VM) and rectus femoris (RF). The D/S ratio significantly (p<0.05) increased by 8.7+/-8.5% (mean+/-SD) and 10.2+/-9.2% after 35% and 65% tasks, respectively, and remained elevated 5min into recovery; however, there was no significant difference in ratio between the two sessions immediately or 5min post-fatigue (p>0.05) even though the endurance time for the 35% fatigue task (124+/-39.68s) was significantly longer (p=0.05) than that of the 65% task (63+/-17.73s). EMG amplitude and median power frequency (MPF) analysis also did not reveal any significant differences between these two sessions after fatigue. These findings indicate that LFF fatigue is fatigue dependent as well as task intensity/duration dependent. These findings assist us in understanding task dependency and muscle fatigue.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To clarify the relation between the dependency of elderly people and the assistance they receive from others by using a detailed but simple measure of dependency. DESIGN--Secondary analysis of data from a survey of people aged 70 and over. SETTING--Two general practices in south Wales. SUBJECTS--1280 people aged 70 and over. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Dependency on others to perform essential functions; detailed data on who assists with those functions. RESULTS--Increasing dependency was associated with increased use of more than one member of the family or friends and an increase in the provision of statutory services. CONCLUSION--The complexity of the relation between dependency and those who care for dependent people has previously been underestimated. The presence of providers of statutory services at the household of elderly dependent people suggests that these services can be developed further to help those caring for elderly people at home.  相似文献

In the paper by Gambin et al. (2002) we introduced the model of contextual alignment of biological sequences. It is an extension of the classical alignment, in which the cost of a substitution depends on the surrounding symbols. Consequently, in this model the cost of transforming one sequence into another depends on the order of editing operations. In this paper, we strengthen some of our results which concern reconstructing (the representation of) all the orders of operations which yield this optimal cost. We also present a procedure to construct context-dependent substitution tables and discuss the distribution of scores of local contextual alignment, which is shown to follow the extreme value distribution in the gap-free, reduced context case. We also demonstrate a linear time algorithm to compute the optimal local and global alignment without gaps.  相似文献

The primary event in vision is the light-driven cis-trans isomerization of the 11-cis-retinal chromophore in the G-protein coupled receptor rhodopsin. Early measurements showed that this photoisomerization has a reaction quantum yield phi of approximately 0.67 [Dartnall (1936) Proc. R. Soc. A 156, 158-170; Dartnall (1968) Vision Res. 8, 339-358] and suggested that the quantum yield was wavelength independent [Schneider (1939) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 170, 102-112]. Here we more accurately determine phi(500) = 0.65 +/- 0.01 and reveal that phi surprisingly depends on the wavelength of the incident light. Although there is no difference in the quantum yield between 450 and 480 nm, the quantum yield falls significantly as the photon energy is reduced below 20 000 cm(-1) (500 nm). At the reddest wavelength measured (570 nm), the quantum yield is reduced by 5 +/- 1% relative to the 500 nm value. These experiments correct the long-held presumption that the quantum yield in vision is wavelength independent, and support the hypothesis that the 200 fs photoisomerization reaction that initiates vision is dictated by nonstationary excited-state vibrational wave packet dynamics.  相似文献

Curing of the hydrogenase-specifying megaplasmid pHG indigenous to strains of the facultative lithoautotrophic bacterium Alcaligenes eutrophus was correlated with a loss of denitrifying ability (Nitd). The retransfer of plasmid pHG1 reconstituted the Nitd phenotype. Plasmid-free mutants were still capable of converting some nitrate to nitrite, but they did not metabolize nitrite under anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

Isolated, perfused, and ventilated rat lungs were challenged by paraquat (0.01 M) in the presence of 2.5 mM Ca2+, 2.5 mM Ca2+ with trifluoperazine (100 microM), 0.025 mM Ca2+, or 0.025 mM Ca2+ with sodium metavanadate (10 microM) to establish the effect of varying calcium concentration or calcium-dependent enzyme activities on injury induced by paraquat. Segmental vascular resistances, microvascular permeability (as assessed by the capillary filtration coefficient), lung tissue oxidized glutathione, and lung paraquat accumulation were measured. Exposure to paraquat for 2.5 h did not increase microvascular permeability or pulmonary vascular resistance in the presence of either normal extracellular calcium or low extracellular calcium and sodium metavanadate. Lungs exposed to paraquat were injured (as assessed by increased filtration coefficient) only in the presence of low extracellular calcium or after trifluoperazine was added. This injury was associated with decreased levels of oxidized glutathione and increased paraquat accumulation, suggesting that calcium's protective effect was both by inhibition of paraquat accumulation and maintenance of NADPH. Pulmonary vascular resistance was not increased with paraquat challenge.  相似文献

This paper describes in vitro antibody dependent cytotoxicity against Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes by normal mouse splenic lymphocytes. Cytotoxicity was expressed as the percentage reduction in the number of motile parasites upon incubation with lymphocytes at 37 degrees C in a defined medium. Failure of the non-motile parasites to regain motility and their ensuing degeneration of 28 degrees C in liver infusion tryptose (LIT) medium confirmed loss of motility as a criterion of cytotoxicity. Incubation of T. cruzi cruzi at 37 degrees C for 18 h in a defined medium per se did not interfere with motility but was followed by a lag phase of the growth curve in LIT medium at 28 degrees C. The lag phase was prolonged for T. cruzi which had previously been incubated at 37 degrees C in the absence of cells.  相似文献

A complete understanding of fluid exchanges in tissues and organs requires knowledge of the permeability of their delimiting membranes as a function of the finite strain that they experience. One reason for the current dearth of data in the literature is the need for new theoretically motivated experimental approaches. In this paper, we use a general scaling to identify non-dimensional parameters that are measured easily by combining a simple pressure-driven diffusion chamber with a method to induce equibiaxial and homogeneous finite strains that can be measured via a non-contacting video system. Illustrative results on excised bovine epicardium reveal a nonlinear relationship between a non-dimensional permeability and finite strain up to stretches of 60%.  相似文献
