A case of cerebrospinal nematodiasis in a young adult moose (Alces alces) from Telemark county, southeastern Norway, is described. The moose was found by bird hunters during January, displaying signs of severe posterior paresis. It was killed and submitted for autopsy. The carcass was emaciated, and there were skin excoriations and subcutaneous edema over both metacarpi. Histopathologic examination revealed traumatic malacia throughout the spinal cord and meningeal accumulations of mononuclear inflammatory cells and eosinophils in brain and spinal cord. Two adult female nematodes were found in sections, respectively, of the subarachnoid and subdural spaces of the thoracic spinal cord. The nematode cross sections were similar with those of the two neurotropic Elaphostrongylus species, E. rangiferi and E. cervi. The moose originated from an area overlapping the grazing area of a large population of wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) living on the mountain plateau of Hardangervidda, suggesting the moose was infected with E. rangiferi from reindeer.  相似文献

A case of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in a moose calf (Alces alces) in Norway is described. The animal was heavily infested with ticks (Ixodes ricinus), and died from a Klebsiella pneumoniae septicemia. Examination of blood smears from the calf revealed cytoplasmic inclusions (morulae) typical of infection with Ehrlichia phagocytophila in the granulocytes. Ehrlichia sp. was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in blood from the calf, and in the ticks. Sequence determination identified it as E. phagocytophila. This is the first report of ehrlichiosis in moose.  相似文献

Serum samples from 104 moose (Alces alces), 124 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 114 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), collected from different counties in southern Norway from 1994 to 2000, were analysed by an indirect immunofluorescent antibody staining method for antibodies to Ehrlichia equi. The overall seroprevalences for granulocytic Ehrlichia spp. in moose, red deer, and roe deer from Ixodes ricinus infested counties were 43%, 55%, and 96%, respectively. Antibody prevalence was significantly higher in roe deer than in moose and red deer (P < 0.001). Mean antibody titers (log10 +/- SD) to E. equi in sera from moose, red deer, and roe deer were 1:1,497 (3.17 +/- 0.646), 1:234 (2.37 +/- 0.424) and 1:676 (2.83 +/- 0.404), respectively. The present work indicates that all these wild ruminant species are exposed to granulocytic Ehrlichia in Norway.  相似文献

As the distribution and abundance of ticks increase, so do the risks of tick-borne diseases. Anaplasma phagocytophilum, transmitted by Ixodes spp. ticks, is a widespread tick-borne infection causing tick-borne fever (TBF) in domestic ruminants and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. However, the role of wildlife in its epidemiology is poorly understood. Evidence of infection has been detected in wild cervids, but the pathogenicity and ecological consequences are unknown. We conducted a serological study of moose (Alces alces) in two populations in southern Norway, one where TBF was endemic (Telemark) and the other where sheep ticks (Ixodes ricinus) were essentially absent (Hedmark). Seroprevalence to A. phagocytophilum antibodies was 79 and 0 %, respectively. In Telemark, seroprevalence was significantly higher among females that calved successfully (85 %) than among others (50 %). Body mass and winter mass change were unrelated to serostatus. Relative abundance of questing ticks in Telemark was highest in deciduous forest and lowest in mature coniferous forest and higher at easterly aspects and altitudes below 350 m. Habitat factors associated with high tick abundance were risk factors for seropositivity among moose. Our findings were consistent with anaplasmosis causing a persistent subclinical infection in moose without population-level effects. Further work is needed to establish the importance of moose as a reservoir for the disease in sympatric domestic livestock.  相似文献

Baseline reference ranges of serum chemistry and hematology data can be important indicators for the status of both individuals or populations of wild animals that are affected by emerging pathogens, toxicants, or other causes of disease. Frequently, reference ranges for these values are not available for wildlife species or subspecies. We present hematologic and serum chemistry reference ranges for moose (Alces alces) adults, yearlings, and calves in Norway sampled from 1992-2000. Additionally, we demonstrated that both induction time and chase time were correlated with initial rectal temperature, although they were not significantly correlated with cortisol, aspartate aminotransferase, glucose, or creatine kinase. Overall, the reference ranges given here are similar to those given for American moose, with a few differences that can be attributed to environment, testing methodology, or subspecies or species status. This is the first report, to our knowledge, of reference ranges for moose in Norway.  相似文献

This study was conducted to clarify the etiology of a high frequency of bone fractures and osteoporosis in the moose (Alces alces) population in southern Norway. Liver samples, both metacarpi, and carcass data were collected from 21 and 22 moose calves shot in 1994 in Birkenes (southern Norway), and Naer?y (central Norway), respectively. The liver samples were analyzed for copper, manganese, zinc, cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, and selenium. Bone samples were subject to histologic, radiologic, and chemical examinations. Three of the calves from Birkenes and one calf from Naer?y showed histologic and radiologic evidence of generalized osteoporosis consistent with osteoporosis due to starvation. The calves with osteoporosis had the lowest carcass weights and radio-opacities recorded. There was a positive correlation between carcass weight and bone radio-opacity. Density, ash content, phosphorus, and calcium contents and phosphorous/calcium ratio in bone samples, as well as hepatic trace element status, were within the normal range for all calves in both populations. Two of the osteoporotic calves, were reported to have been orphaned. Our results indicate that the high frequency of bone fractures reported in moose in southern Norway is not associated with regional differences in trace element status or bone mineral balance. We propose that the occurrence of osteoporosis in moose calves in Birkenes may have resulted from inadequate nutrition following general overcrowding and high pressure on feed resources in the southernmost part of Norway.  相似文献

The negative impact of anthropogenic disturbance and land-use changes on large mammals is generally recognized within conservation biology. In southeastern Norway, both moose (Alces alces) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) occur throughout human-modified landscapes, facilitating an interesting comparative study of their habitat use. By using pellet group counts, we looked at the importance of forest structure, vegetation characteristics and human disturbance (e.g., distance to the nearest house, nearest paved road, and nearest edge between field and forest) in shaping the winter distribution of both species at multiple spatial scales, in non-agricultural habitats. Moose occurred more often in areas with higher densities of heather and Vaccinium sp. in the ground layer, and used areas with more open forest structure. The proportion of built-up areas, within a 1,000-m buffer, negatively influenced moose occurrence. Roe deer occurred more often in areas with deciduous trees and patches with juniper and Vaccinium sp. in the ground layer, used areas near roads less, but were significantly associated with areas near the field–forest ecotone. The proportion of built-up areas positively influenced roe deer distribution within a 2,500-m buffer. Roe deer seem to be able to persist in more human-dominated landscapes, possibly due to the availability of field–forest edges providing both high-quality fodder and cover in close proximity. Moose, on the contrary, did not show any preference for areas associated with human disturbance, and their distribution was only associated with patches providing food.  相似文献

Liver samples from 422 wild moose (Alces alces), 280 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), and 73 reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) collected by hunters in various localities in Norway, 2002-2003, were analyzed for the essential trace elements cobalt, copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum, selenium (Se), and zinc. Significant differences in hepatic concentrations among species were found for all elements except for Mn, and considerable individual and geographic variations were seen. Roe deer had statistically significant lower Se levels (median: 0.51 μg Se/g dry weight) than did moose (0.77 μg Se/g) and reindeer (0.85 μg Se/g). Moose from two coastal municipalities with high precipitation had considerably higher Se concentrations than those from the other localities studied. Seventy-nine roe deer (28%) and 36 moose (9%) had Se concentrations below that regarded as deficient in domestic ruminants. The Se status in roe deer was lower than previously reported in Europe. Moose had a significantly higher Cu (222 μg Cu/g dw) than did roe deer (112 μg Cu/g) and reindeer (105 μg Cu/g). The Cu status of moose and roe deer in Norway are among the highest reported in Europe. However, a suboptimal Se and Cu status was found in moose from Tvedestrand, a population which has suffered from a reduced condition and productivity. The variability in trace element status among hunted cervids, with no apparent signs of deficiency or toxicity, probably reflects adaptations in these wild ruminant species to cope with this. However, subtle clinical signs and lesions are difficult to detect and further research is needed.  相似文献

There are few genotyping studies of Giardia duodenalis isolates from cervid hosts, although a previous study suggested that cervids may be a source of infection for humans and cattle. Giardia duodenalis isolates collected from wild moose (Alces alces) and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Norway during 2002 and 2003 were characterized by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fraction length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) at the beta-giardin gene, and sequence analysis at both the beta-giardin and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) genes. All results suggested that these isolates (n=25) belonged to assemblage A. Three different restriction patterns were obtained with PCR-RFLP, one of which has previously been associated with assemblage A. At the beta-giardin gene, sequences from six reindeer isolates and one moose isolate were identical to a previously published assemblage A sequence from G. duodenalis cysts isolated from dairy calves. The other 10 moose isolates could be divided into five groups, with between two and 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the published genotype A2. At the gdh gene, three different sequences were obtained, differing from each other by between one and 15 SNPs and which have all been previously published as genotype A1, but with different specific hosts. Grouping of the isolates based on the sequences from both genes gave complex results; whereas all the G. duodenalis isolates from reindeer grouped together, two moose isolates, which had identical sequences at the beta-giardin gene, had sequences that differed from each other by 15 SNPs at the gdh gene. The results of these studies, together with the large Norwegian populations of these cervids and the amount of fecal matter they produce, indicate that moose and reindeer may be significant reservoirs of G. duodenalis infection in Norway, which may be of importance to veterinary and public health.  相似文献

Two possible anti-predator strategies of prey were suggested by the distribution of moose at Isle Royale, a 544 km2 island with numerous offshore islets. Aerial surveys in winter indicated that moose density on small islets (<1.5 km2) averaged 415% greater than on the main island, with about 11% of the calf population existing on the small islets which comprise less than 2% of the total land area. On small islets and shorelines, protection from wolves (in the form of escape terrain) is provided by nearby water in summer and coniferous cover in winter. Calves on islands appear to have a higher survival rate. In summer, cow moose with calves were seen more commonly in camps with human activity (and no wolves) than away from camps, suggesting that people provided a refuge from wolf predation for this unhunted moose population. These subtle patterns of habitat selection by moose are attributed to the intensive natural selection pressure of wolf predation.  相似文献

Over the past 30 yr, moose (Alces alces) in Isle Royale National Park (Michigan, USA) exhibited a several-fold increase in the prevalence of osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease (DJD). Available evidence points to an environmental explanation for this change. Greater physical activity among afflicted moose is not a likely contributing factor, nor is genetic change in the population. The possible introduction of an unspecified disease agent cannot be dismissed at this time. Moose exhibiting the highest prevalence of DJD were those born during a period of severe undernutrition, and it is hypothesized that nutritional stress early in life was responsible for increased joint disease during senescence. Such an etiology for osteoarthritis has not been suggested previously for any species.  相似文献
