Eight bimonthly sediment core samples (n = 6) were collected, to a depth of 64 cm, from the hyporheic zone of a springbrook in southern Ontario, Canada. Sediment cores were divided into three to four sections, and organic matter was subdivided into six different categories. Twigs were the most common substrate, followed by roots, cedar leaves, wood, grass, and deciduous leaves. The contributions of deciduous and cedar leaves declined with depth, whereas that of wood increased. On each sampling date and from each section, three randomly chosen substrates >3 cm were examined for conidia of aquatic hyphomycetes. The number of identified species significantly decreased with depth, and was highest on deciduous leaves and lowest on wood. Season had no significant effect on species numbers. DNA from substrates was extracted, amplified with fungal primers, and differentiated into phylotypes with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Absence/presence patterns of phylotype were significantly affected by season but not by section level. Both season and section level significantly affected relative densities of the bands of the 10 most common phylotypes. Our data suggest that aquatic hyphomycetes and other fungi readily disperse within the hyporheic zone, and that their relative scarcity in this habitat is due to a lack of suitable substrates.  相似文献

Summary Transects were cut from alder leaves incubated in a freshwater stream and plated as quadrats so that fungal isolates could be mapped by reconstruction of each transect. Initially there was fewer than one aquatic hyphomycete colonist per quadrat, but the mode increased to 6–7 then progressively decreased to <1. Numbers of species of aquatic hyphomycetes per quadrat rose and fell similarly with a maximum mode of 3–4, as did species per transect with a maximum of 11 and a diversity of 16, comprising 6 dominant species and about 10 occasional species. The latter showed no pattern of appearance but the dominant group was established early and persisted in a dynamic equilibrium. Aquatic hyphomycetes were initially randomly distributed but developed progressively into clumped consortia which persisted after peak colonization, declining as leaf degradation became total. Colonies of the most persistent aquatic hyphomycete species were initially discrete, developing into a complex network of overlapping colonies and species, no two of which showed positive association. These complexes broke down to large colonies of a few species and finally to 1–2 small colonies. The pattern of isolates of the 18 genera of other fungi was the reverse of that for aquatic hyphomycetes. Only Cladosporium, Epicoccum and Fusarium were important colonizers. The first two appear to be inhibited by aquatic hyphomycetes, but were found to degrade substrates representative of cell-wall polymers vigorously whereas aquatic hyphomycetes showed varied degradative ability. Leaf transects were examined by S.E.M. and epifluorescent microscopy so that hyphal colonization could be followed at progressive stages of leaf degradation. Bacteria on transects were patchily distributed, the temporal pattern indicating inhibition by aquatic hyphomycetes and colonization of senescent hyphae.  相似文献

Twenty-six species of aquatic hyphomycetes were isolated from woody sources (unidentified wood segments, leaf skeletons and neck of leaves and bark) in the North River Nile (Delta region). Alatospora acuminata, Anguillospora crassa, Flagellaspora penicillioides, Lunulospra curvula, Tetracladium marchalianum and Triscelophorus monosporus were the most common species. Temperature was the highest physico-chemical parameter affecting the aquatic hyphomycetes occurrence. Twelve species of hyphomycetes, isolated from woody substrates, were screened for their ability to produce extracellular lignocellulolytic enzymes on solid media. The enzymes tested included: endoglucanase, endoxylanase, beta-glucosidase, laccase, peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase, tyrosinase and beta-xylosidase. Three species, A. acuminata, F. penicillioides, T. monosporus, were positive for all tested enzymes. Also, A. longissima was positive for all enzymes except lignin-peroxidase. The ability to produce cellulase was 100% for all species while only, four species were positive for lignin-peroxidase. The ability of the species to produce other lignocellulotic enzyme ranged from 50% to 83%. Freshwater hyphomycetes have been shown to produce a rich array of enzymes able to degrade the polysaccharides of plant debris.  相似文献

1. At two organically polluted sites in the River Nethravathi, banyan and eucalypt leaves were colonized by one or two species of aquatic hyphomycetes. A total of three or four species were identified at the two sites in samples of water and naturally occurring leaves.
2. Spore production from stream‐exposed leaves by aquatic hyphomycetes was lower by a factor of up to 1 million compared with an earlier study in geographically close but unpolluted streams.
3. Exponential decay rates and loss rates of phosphorus and calcium, were not statistically different from an earlier study in unpolluted streams. Nitrogen increased during decomposition more slowly in the current study.
4. The microbial community on both leaves released enzymes active against starch, pectin, cellulose and xylan.
5. Banyan leaves conditioned for 12 weeks were more palatable to the gastropod Notopala sp. than unconditioned leaves.
6. Together with earlier data from unpolluted streams, the study provides evidence that organic pollution severely restricts diversity of aquatic hyphomycetes and their reproductive output, but does not have an equally strong effect on ecological functions generally associated with this group.  相似文献

Abstract. We develop and evaluate a large‐scale dynamic vegetation model, TEM‐LPJ, which considers interactions among water, light and nitrogen in simulating ecosystem function and structure. We parameterized the model for three plant functional types (PFTs): a temperate deciduous forest, a temperate coniferous forest, and a temperate C3 grassland. Model parameters were determined using data from forest stands at the Harvard Forest in Massachusetts. Applications of the model reasonably simulated stand development over 120 yr for Populus tremuloides in Wisconsin and for Pinus elliottii in Florida. Our evaluation of tree‐grass interactions simulated by the model indicated that competition for light led to dominance by the deciduous forest PFT in moist regions of eastern United States and that water competition led to dominance by the grass PFT in dry regions of the central United States. Along a moisture transect at 41.5° N in the eastern United States, simulations by TEM‐LPJ reproduced the composition of potential temperate deciduous forest, temperate savanna, and C3 grassland located along the transect.  相似文献

Progress in the study of the freshwater aquatic fungal flora (mainly hyphomycetes) of submerged decaying leaves of dicotyledonous trees and shrubs, since the discovery of the flora in 1942, is reviewed. The abundant occurrence of liberated conidia, which tend to be of distinctive form, in persistent foam on a stream is noted and illustrated by an example from Scotland. Developments in the taxonomy of these fungi since 1942 are noted. About 60 genera and around 120 species are now recorded. In a number the perfect stage has been discovered. In most cases it has proved to be an ascomycete, but it is sometimes a basidiomycete. Conidium development in aquatic hyphomycetes is discussed in the light of recent views on the classification of conidial types. It is argued that the most valid distinction is between phialoconidia and other types, rather than between those of blastic and those of thallic development. Dispersal is discussed with special reference to upstream spread and the problem of dispersal from one isolated water system to another. Finally, attention is given to the ecology and general physiology of these fungi. Their possible importance in processing decaying leaves for subsequent consumption by small aquatic animals is considered. The terrestrial occurrence of many “aquatic hyphomycetes” is noted and it is suggested that “amphibious hyphomycetes” might be a better term.  相似文献

Decomposition of Juglans regia leaves was studied in fine and coarse mesh bags in a permanent mountain stream in Oman. A rapid initial mass loss, attributed to leaching, was followed by a more gradual decline. Daily exponential decay rates (k) calculated over 32 days were 0.011 (fine mesh litter bags) and 0.014 (coarse mesh litter bags). The difference between bag types was not significant, suggesting limited impact of leaf‐shredding invertebrates. Ergosterol levels on leaves from fine mesh bags peaked at 0.3 mg g1 AFDM after 16 days of stream exposure. During the experimental period, which followed the annual leaf fall, the concentration of aquatic hyphomycete conidia in the stream varied between 82 and 1362 l–1. Based on the morphology of conidia found in the water column or released from leaves, we identified 14 species of aquatic hyphomycetes. Tetracladium apiense was the most common taxon (62.2% of conidia in water column during the field experiment). Three other Tetracladium species contributed another 8%. Plating out leaf particles yielded common epiphytic taxa such as Alternaria sp., Aureobasidium pullulans and Phoma sp. The measured metrics of leaf decay in this desert stream fall within the range of values observed in temperate and tropical streams, with clear evidence for an early leaching phase, and no evidence of a strong impact of leaf shredders. The community of aquatic hyphomycetes appears impoverished. (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

1. Drying or freezing autumn-shed leaves of Betula papyrifera, Ulmus americana and Acer saccharum increased the leaching of soluble substances. The difference between fresh and treated leaves was most pronounced in birch. 2. Dried and frozen leaves supported more species of aquatic hyphomycetes during early decay, and conidium production from these fungi was higher. 3. Anguillospora filiformis was the most prolific spore producer on most samples. It declined in later stages of decay, when Articulospora tetradadia became more common. Crucella subtilis, an unspecialized parasite of aquatic hyphomycetes, was quite common in many samples. 4. In the autumn of 1990, 50% of elm and maple leaves, and 30% of birch leaves were shed before the air temperature dropped below 0°C; 10% (elm, maple) to 30% (birch) experienced more than one freezing period before being shed. 5. Water-soluble extracts from leaves inhibited radial growth of four fungal species. Maple extracts generally had the greatest inhibitory effect, followed by birch and elm.  相似文献

Polluted groundwater wells located in a former copper shale mining district (11 sites; Mansfelder Land, Central Germany) and in meadows of the Mulde and Elbe rivers (2 sites) were assessed for occurrence and species richness of aquatic hyphomycetes. Water temperatures at all sites were relatively low and fluctuated less than in surface waters. Oxygen concentrations were always below saturation, whereas sulfate, nitrate, and phosphate levels reached extremely high values in several of the wells. Relatively high levels of Pb, Mn, and Fe were found in some of the wells, but overall few concentrations of individual metals and metalloids exceeded European guidelines for drinking water. Pollen tube growth inhibition, used to assess cytotoxicity of the water, ranged between 4 and 50%. Between 1 and 10 distinct species of aquatic hyphomycetes colonized sterile Alnus glutinosa leaves exposed at the Mansfelder Land sites; for the meadow sites, 8-20 species were found. Heliscus lugdunensis and Anguillospora sp. were the two most widespread species. Fungal colonization occurred much more slowly than in surface water, as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy and the release of conidia from recovered leaves. The conidial output from exposed alder leaves ranged from 0.2 to 95 conidia mg (-1) dry mass, corresponding to 10% of the values for contaminated surface waters in the same region. Overall, groundwater appears to be a marginal habitat for aquatic hyphomycetes, but may nevertheless play a vital role as long-term reservoir facilitating rapid recolonization following a collapse in fungal communities in surface waters.  相似文献

We observed 35 species of aero-aquatic hyphomycetes belonging to 21 genera and 4 unidentified taxa of the Clavariopsis, Dactilella, Helicoon, and Tetracladium genera. Substrate preferences were detected in some species. Species such as Anguillospora longissima, Tetracladium marchalianum, and Fusarium aqueductum were found on different types of substrata. Only 11 species are developed on pine needles, while 20 species were observed on leaves. Eight species of aquatic hyphomycetes (Alatospora acuminata, Angullospora aquatica, Lemonniera aquatica, Tetracladium setigerum, Tricladium angulatum, Tripospermum campelopardus, Septonema secedens, and Spermospora sp.) were revealed on leaves taken from water habitats, whereas 15 species were found in litter. The jointly grown species did not demonstrate any inhibiting effects on each other except for Tripospermum campelopardus, which inhibited the growth of other species (Table 3). The microcyclic development of a Dactilella sp. was detected for the first time while being incubated on leaves in the laboratory. The frequency of appearance changes, and the diversity of the species of aquatic hyphomycetes appears to be higher on intact leaves than on skeletonized ones. The seasonal dynamics of aquatic hyphomycetes with two peaks of mass conidia development (vernal and sharper autumnal) were described. Some species were observed throughout the entire vegetation season. The conidial development in the leaf samples incubated in the laboratory lasted for 30–40 days. Therefore, the method of incubation for 7–10 days recommended in the literature did not allow for the complete investigation of species diversity in aquatic hyphomycetes.  相似文献

In this study we assessed the effect of current velocity and shredder presence, manipulated in artificial channels, on the structure of the fungal assemblage colonizing alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner ) leaves incubated in coarse and fine mesh bags. Fungal sporulation rates, cumulative conidial production and number of species of aquatic hyphomycetes were higher in leaves exposed to high rather than to low current velocity. The opposite was observed regarding Simpson's index (D) on the fungal assemblage. Some species of aquatic hyphomycetes were consistently stimulated in high current channels. No effect of shredders or of mesh type was observed. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Abstract ‘Alpine grazing reduces blazing’ is a widely and strongly held view concerning the effects of livestock grazing on fuels, and therefore fire behaviour and impact, in Australia's high country landscapes. As a test of this hypothesis, we examined the patterns of burning across the alpine (treeless) landscapes of the Bogong High Plains in Victoria, following the extensive fires of January 2003. Data were collected from multiple transects, each 3–5 km long, with survey points located randomly at either 50, 200 or 500 m intervals. The transects traversed the major regions of the Bogong High Plains, both grazed and ungrazed. At each point, we recorded whether the point was burnt or unburnt, the vegetation type (closed‐heath, open‐heath, grassland or herbfield), the estimated prefire shrub cover, slope, aspect, and a GPS location. At burnt heathland sites, we recorded the minimum twig diameter (an a posteriori measure of fire severity) in a sample of common shrubs. In total, there were 108 km of transect lines, 419 survey points and 4050 twig measurements, with sample points equally distributed across grazed and ungrazed country. The occurrence of fire (i.e. burnt or unburnt) in grazed and ungrazed areas was analysed by logistic regression; the variation in twig diameters by anova . Approximately half of all points were burnt. There was no statistically significant difference between grazed and ungrazed areas in the proportion of points burnt. Fire occurrence was determined primarily by vegetation type, with the proportion burnt being 0.87 for closed‐heath, 0.59 for open‐heath, and 0.13 for grassland and all snow‐patch herbfield points unburnt. In both closed‐heath and open‐heath, grazing did not significantly lower the severity of fire, as measured by the diameter of burnt twigs. We interpret the lack of a grazing effect in terms of shrub dynamics (little or no grazing effect on long‐term cover of taller shrubs), diet and behaviour of cattle (herbs and dwarf shrubs eaten; tall shrubs not eaten and closed‐heath vegetation generally avoided), and fuel flammability (shrubs more flammable than grass). Whatever effects livestock grazing may have on vegetation cover, and therefore fuels in alpine landscapes, they are likely to be highly localized, with such effects unlikely to translate into landscape‐scale reduction of fire occurrence or severity. The use of livestock grazing in Australian alpine environments as a fire abatement practice is not justified on scientific grounds.  相似文献

Results from 24 transects showed that tapirs were less abundant in areas with higher human presence. They also preferred less steep areas, especially as browsing sites. An analysis of feces showed that fibers were the largest component (40–55%) followed by leaves (10–30%) and twigs (15%). Bamboo (Chusquea spp.) was found in all samples and probably accounts for the high proportion of fibers. Twenty‐seven plant species were identified to be eaten by tapirs.  相似文献

Question: How is the diversity of woody species in a seasonally dry savanna related to plant available water (PAW)? Location: Savannas in central Brazil. Methods: Two‐dimensional soil resistivity profiles to 10‐m depth previously measured along three 10 m × 275 m replicate transects revealed differences in belowground water resources among and within transects: (1) driest/most heterogeneous; (2) wettest/least heterogeneous; and (3) PAW‐intermediate. All woody plants along these transects were identified to species, and height and basal circumference measured. Species diversity was evaluated for the whole transect (total diversity), 100‐m2 plots (alpha‐diversity) and dissimilarity among 100‐m2 plots within transects (beta‐diversity). Correlation analyses were conducted between PAW and vegetation variables at the 100‐m2 scale. Results: The driest/most heterogeneous transect had the lowest total species diversity, while the wettest/least heterogeneous transect showed the lowest beta‐diversity. Floristic variation was correlated with PAW in all transects. In the most heterogeneous transect, species density was positively correlated with PAW in the 0‐400 cm soil layer. Evenness and Simpson's diversity were negatively correlated with PAW in the 700‐1000 cm soil layer. Conclusion: Woody species diversity was related to PAW at a fine spatial scale. Abundant PAW in the top 4 m of soil may favour many species and increase species total diversity. Conversely, abundant PAW at depth may result in lower evenness and total diversity, probably because the few species adapted to obtaining deep soil water can become dominant. Environmental changes altering soil water availability and partitioning in soil layers could affect the diversity of woody plants in this savanna.  相似文献

1. We characterised the fungal communities of eight streams in Portugal, four bordered by native deciduous forest and four bordered by pure stands of Eucalyptus globulus .
2. Aquatic hyphomycete species richness and evenness, but not numbers of water-borne conidia, of aquatic hyphomycetes were significantly lower in eucalypt bordered streams.
3. Multivariate analyses subdivided the fungal communities into two distinct groups corresponding to riparian vegetation.
4. Despite these differences in the dominant decomposer community, decay rates of eucalypt leaves (accounting for ≥98% of naturally occurring leaves in eucalypt bordered streams, absent in native forest) and chestnut leaves (occurring naturally in native forests) did not differ between the two groups of streams.  相似文献

Aquatic hyphomycetes are microbial decomposers in freshwater environments that, together with detritivores, play an essential role in the functioning of low-order streams. Here, we evaluated aquatic hyphomycetes communities associated with decomposing leaves of Nectandra megapotamica, a common Neotropical riparian tree, along a subtropical-tropical latitudinal gradient. Two forest streams located in subtropical regions and 3 in tropical regions were selected. We identified 29 species of aquatic hyphomycetes, 22 (75.8%) in subtropical streams and 15 (51.7%) in tropical streams. We also found a higher fungal biomass in subtropical streams. However, the amounts of leaf mass loss did not differ between regions, but the values were higher in summer than in winter. High temperature, pH and electrical conductivity values, as well as low dissolved oxygen levels, negatively affected spore production. These results suggest that the subtropical-tropical gradient is an important predictor of aquatic hyphomycete diversity; however, the observed species had different sensitivities to local environmental factors.  相似文献

Reproduction and dispersal in aquatic hyphomycetes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The conidia of aquatic hyphomycetes were discovered by C.T. Ingold some 60 years ago. They are typically multiradiate or sigmoid, relatively fragile, and produced in enormous numbers. Their main function seems to be the rapid colonization of a periodic superabundance of leaves common in most streams. Conidia are unlikely to survive adverse conditions and to be responsible for the apparently worldwide distribution of many aquatic hyphomycete species. It has repeatedly been suggested that meiospores are responsible for long-distance dispersal; however, to date, only some 10% of described species have been connected to a teleomorph. To determine additional connections, and to document the potential role of meiospores in long-distance dispersal of aquatic hyphomycetes, the application of modern molecular methods is essential.  相似文献

Steralized leaf pieces of eight plants (Eucalyptus rostrata, Phoenix dactylifera, Phragmites australis, Musa nana, Salix subserrata, Cyperus alopecuroides, Ricinus communis and Eichhornia crassipes) were submerged in the Nile stream. Thirty-nine species of aquatic hyphomycetes were colonized on the plant leaves. Eucalyptus was the best substratum (30 species) for colonization by aquatic hyphomycetes. Phoenix (14 species), Phragmites (11 species), Salix (9 species), Musa (8 species), Ricinus and Cyperus (6 species) were also good substrata for aquatic hyphomycetes colonization. Echhornia (aquatic plant) was not suitable for aquatic hyphomycetes colonization. Alatospora acuminata, Triscelophorus monosporus and Tetracladium marchalianum were found to be the major colonizers on all leaf materials. Temperature and dissolved oxygen were the highest physico-chemical parameters affecting the aquatic hyphomycetes colonization. These results indicate that aquatic hyphomycetes have been shown to be successful colonizers on plants leaf in river Nile in Egypt as subtropical region. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
