滇西北‒西藏和滇东南‒桂西是我国西南植物区系中两个面貌和谱系年龄差异最为鲜明的区域, 分别以区系年轻、草本植物和区系古老、木本植物为特征。其中一个饶为有趣的问题是这两个地区的区系分异现象是如何演变形成的? 古植物学研究能为回答这一问题提供重要证据。本文报道分别发现于滇西北‒西藏和滇东南‒桂西的椿榆属(Cedrelospermum)和臭椿属(Ailanthus)化石新纪录。结合已有研究, 这两个类群在我国西南的化石历史为: 椿榆属见于西藏中始新世至晚渐新世(西藏椿榆C. tibetica)及滇东南晚始新世(亚洲椿榆C. asiaticum)地层, 而臭椿属化石见于西藏中始新世至晚始新世(大果臭椿A. maximus)及滇东南晚始新世至早渐新世(古臭椿A. confucii)地层。以上古近纪滇西北‒西藏和滇东南‒桂西植物区系在属级水平上的相似性表明这两个地区之间曾经存在区系交流、类群组成相近。然而, 在种级水平上, 自晚始新世以来其椿榆属和臭椿属植物又各不相同, 暗示着以上两个区系可能在晚始新世或更早已经由于环境分异等因素而向着不同的方向发展。现在椿榆属和臭椿属都已经从西藏消失了, 取而代之的是总体上更为年轻的草本植物区系。与此不同, 臭椿属在滇东南‒桂西延续到了现在, 体现了该地区区系的古老性。本研究为滇西北‒西藏和滇东南‒桂西植物区系在地质历史时期的相似性及其分异的形成提供了化石证据。  相似文献

Analysis of the age structure of parthenitae of trematodes of sympatric populations of L. obtusata and L. saxatilis was conducted in 1983 for 6 localities in Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea. 10 species of trematodes were found. The main populational differences in the level of infection are caused by Microphallus piriformes. Species with secondary dispersion in the life cycle are characterized by the increase in the extent of infection in populations with age. In Microphallidae species of "pygmaeus" group the age structure of infection depends on the overage infection of populations: the increase in the parasitic press leads to the maximum turning towards the young part of the snail's population. The establishment of the age structure of infection is considered to be one of the regulation mechanisms in parasite--host relations on the populational level.  相似文献

The elemental composition and flavonol content of Pentaphylloides fruticosa (L.) O. Schwartz under the conditions of the Altai mountains are investigated. Some differences in the concentrations of elements and flavonols were detected in the leaves of P. fruticosa plants of different age classes corresponding to two periods of development: pregenerative (immature and virginal plants) and generative (young, middle-aged and old generative individuals). The maximum content of flavonols, in particular quercetin, in the leaves of P. fruticosa corresponds to the young generative age. A very high correlation between the flavonol content and the concentrations of Mn, Zn, Mo, and Se was revealed.  相似文献

Spinal ganglia from 4- to 7-day [Stage 23–30; Hamburger and Hamilton (1951) J. Morphol.88, 49–92] chicken embryos were cultured in vitro to investigate the effect of various environmental conditions on cell differentiation. Culture morphology (i.e., degree of dispersion of the explanted ganglia, survival of neurons, and outgrowth of axons) was observed to depend upon several factors including: (1) the age of the explanted ganglia, (2) the presence or absence of nerve growth factor (NGF), and (3) the nature of the substratum on which the cultured tissue resides. These observations enabled us to disturb the association of neurons with the other cells in ganglion cultures and thereby modulate the differentiation of adventitious melanocytes. Thus, in medium permissive for melanogenesis, melanocytes appear when the association between neurons and small stellate nonneuronal cells in the ganglion is disrupted. This disruption is most extensive (1) when young (Stage 26–27, 5-day) ganglia are explanted on plastic substrata, in the initial absence of NGF, and (2) when cells from enzyme-dissociated ganglia are cultured on plastic substrata. In comparable media, pigment cell differentiation is not observed when the association between neurons and small stellate cells is preserved. Such associations tend to endure (1) in developmentally older (Stage 30+, 7- to 8-day) ganglia or (2) when ganglia are cultured on agar or fibroblast substrata. We conclude that loss of association between neurons and the nonneuronal cells in young ganglia is necessary for the latter to undergo melanogenesis in vitro.  相似文献

To elucidate possible causes of the elevation of genome number in somatic cells, hepatocyte ploidy levels were measured cytofluorimetrically and related to the organismal parameters (body size, postnatal growth rate, and postnatal development type) in 53 mammalian species. Metabolic scope (ratio of maximal metabolic rate to basal metabolic rate) was also included in 23 species. Body masses ranged 10(5) times, and growth rate more than 30 times. Postnatal growth rate was found to have the strongest effect on the hepatocyte ploidy. At a fixed body mass the growth rate closely correlates (partial correlation analysis) with the cell ploidy level (r = 0.85, P < 10(-6)), whereas at a fixed growth rate body mass correlates poorly with ploidy level (r = -0.38, P < 0.01). The mature young (precocial mammals) of the species have, on average, a higher cell ploidy level than the immature-born (altricial) animals. However, the relationship between precocity of young and cell ploidy levels disappears when the influences of growth rate and body mass are removed. Interspecies variability of the hepatocyte ploidy levels may be explained by different levels of competition between the processes of proliferation and differentiation in cells. In turn, the animal differences in the levels of this competition are due to differences in growth rate. A high negative correlation between the hepatocyte ploidy level and the metabolic scope indicates a low safety margin of organs with a high number of polyploid cells. This fact allows us to challenge a common opinion that increasing ploidy enhances the functional capability of cells or is necessary for cell differentiation. Somatic polyploidy can be considered a "cheap" solution of growth problems that appear when an organ is working at the limit of its capabilities.  相似文献

In zebra finches, only males sing, and the neural regions controlling song exhibit prominent, hormone-induced sex differences in neuron number. In order to understand how sexual differentiation regulates neuron number within one song nucleus, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (IMAN), we studied the development of sex differences among IMAN neurons that project to the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA). The IMAN is implicated in song learning, and previous ontogenetic studies have indicated that males lose over 50% of their IMAN neurons during the juvenile song learning period. Based on developmental changes in both the extent of androgen accumulation within the IMAN and its appearance in Nissl-stained tissue, it had been hypothesized that IMAN neuron loss was even greater in young females, resulting in sex differences in neuron number. However, this hypothesis has not been tested directly because the Nissl-stained boundaries of the IMAN sometimes are ambiguous in young animals, and are not evident at all in adult females. To circumvent these problems, we employed the retrograde tracer fast blue to study the development of IMAN neurons defined on the basis of their projections to the RA. We find that the number of these IMAN-RA projection neurons is much greater in adult males than in females, and that this sex difference develops during the juvenile period of sexual differentiation and song learning because a significant number of these neurons are lost in females but not in males. With respect to sexual differentiation, we conclude that masculinization (which is stimulated by the hormone estradiol) promotes the retention of IMAN-RA projection neurons. In addition, our results indicate that any loss of IMAN neurons that may occur in young males does not include cells projecting to the RA.  相似文献

The prevalence of irregular breathing during sleep is age and gender dependent, but the reason for this is unknown. This study tested the hypothesis that older men have a greater sleep-related increase in respiratory resistance. In 48 healthy subjects, 12 in each of four groups of younger and older men and women, airway resistance was measured during wakefulness and sleep using a mask, pneumotachograph, and catheter-mounted pressure sensors. Total respiratory resistance and total "low-flow," and "high-flow" oropharyngeal resistance were analyzed from 170,000 breaths, high flow being at rates above 50% maximal inspiratory flow. High-flow oropharyngeal and total respiratory resistance increased during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep in all groups but not low-flow resistance. Total respiratory resistance increased from 12 +/- 1.2 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s(-1) awake to 16.2 +/- 2.4 in NREM sleep in young men, from 22.8 +/- 3.6 to 33.6 +/- 5.4 in young women, from 18 +/- 3 to 34.8 +/- 4.8 in older men, and from 26.6. +/- 4.2 to 34.2 +/- 6 in older women. The percentage of change in total respiratory resistance from awake to NREM sleep was not different between age groups or genders. We conclude that there are no major age or gender differences in the changes in airway resistance with sleep in normal subjects.  相似文献

The serum level of a circulating thymic factor (FTS) described in our laboratory diminishes in mice after adult thymectomy and with age. However, thymuses from old mice, when grafted into young adult thymectomized recipients lacking circulating FTS, can still partially restore the circulating FTS level of the recipients, whereas newborn thymuses are less efficient in restoring the serum level of FTS in old recipients than in young adult thymectomized recipients. Taken together, our results suggests that in addition to an intrinsic deficiency of the thymic secretion, "environmental" factors play a role in the disappearance of circulating FTS with age, the more so since we observed in old mouse sera factors inhibiting the in vitro biologic activity of FTS, factors that are absent from young mouse sera.  相似文献

Background

Cultural differences in socialization can lead to characteristic differences in how we perceive the world. Consistent with this influence of differential experience, our perception of faces (e.g., preference, recognition ability) is shaped by our previous experience with different groups of individuals.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here, we examined whether cultural differences in social practices influence our perception of faces. Japanese, Chinese, and Asian-Canadian young adults made relative age judgments (i.e., which of these two faces is older?) for East Asian faces. Cross-cultural differences in the emphasis on respect for older individuals was reflected in participants'' latency in facial age judgments for middle-age adult faces—with the Japanese young adults performing the fastest, followed by the Chinese, then the Asian-Canadians. In addition, consistent with the differential behavioural and linguistic markers used in the Japanese culture when interacting with individuals younger than oneself, only the Japanese young adults showed an advantage in judging the relative age of children''s faces.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results show that different sociocultural practices shape our efficiency in processing facial age information. The impact of culture may potentially calibrate other aspects of face processing.  相似文献

In the concept of modularity, plant modules are considered as iterative units and their changes are analyzed in terms of number or size. This paper, however, analyses changes with respect to the reproductive functional performance of modules and individual plant age. Patterns of resource allocation and partitioning in reproductive modules (fruits) are compared between two different age groups of a bushy perennial plant, Cistus ladanifer.Although modules do not differ in their allocation strategies (young plant modules produce the same seed and packing/protective structure biomass as old plant modules), their partitioning strategies change with plant age: young plant modules produce a larger number of lighter seeds than old plants. These differences have a direct consequence on the plant pre-dispersal fitness, which is not counteracted by insect predation on reproductive modules. These results are empirical evidence of a differentiation in the performance of reproductive modules with the ontogenetic development of this plant species. We think that the consideration of such kind of changes in module features is essential in the analysis of the iterative construction of plants.  相似文献

Intestinal absorption of sugars show differences depending on animals age. This is demonstrated using in vivo and in vitro techniques. The age dependence relationship is present in animals of different species such as avian, rodents and ruminants. In chicken the intestinal sugar transport increases after hatching and attains its maximum capacity by the first week of life. The D-glucose and D-galactose uptake is greater in young rats, maximum at 21 days, while it decreases thereafter. The total capacity of the small intestine of adult sheep for sugar absorption was approx. 25% of that for lambs less than 1 week of age. The differences observed in intestinal absorption of sugars at different ages could be attributed to differences in sodium and calcium transport. Other authors assume that it is induced by morphological differentiation during intestinal development.  相似文献

Although studies have demonstrated that trauma markedly alters the bone marrow immune responses, sex and age are crucial determinants under such conditions and have not been extensively examined. To study this, 21- to 27-day-old (premature), 6- to 8-wk-old (mature), and 20- to 24-mo-old (aged) male and female (proestrus) C3H/HeN mice were sham operated or subjected to trauma (i.e., midline laparotomy) and hemorrhagic shock (30 +/- 5 mmHg for 90 min) followed by fluid resuscitation. Twenty-four hours after resuscitation, bone marrow cells were harvested. Trauma-hemorrhage induced an increased number of the early pluripotent stem cell-associated bone marrow cell subsets (Sca1(+)CD34(-)CD117(+/-)lin(+/-)) in young mice. The CD117(+) proportion of these cell subsets increased in mature proestrus females, but not in males. Aged males displayed significant lower numbers of Sca1(+)CD34(-)CD117(+/-)lin(+/-) cells compared with young male mice. Trauma-hemorrhage also increased development of granulocyte/macrophage progenitor cells (CD11b(+)Gr-1(+)). Proliferative responses to granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor were maintained in mature and aged proestrus females, but decreased in young mice and mature males. Augmented differentiation into monocyte/macrophage lineage in mature and aged proestrus females was observed and associated with the maintained release of TNF-alpha and IL-6. Conversely, increased IL-10 and PGE(2) production was observed in the male trauma-hemorrhage groups. Thus, sex- and age-specific effects in bone marrow differentiation and immune responses after trauma-hemorrhage occur, which are likely to contribute to the sex- and age-related differences in the systemic immune responses under such conditions.  相似文献

Summary A detailed study of the postembryonic evolution of the weight of the pigeon, by means of daily weighing of the young birds, is given (table). The young bird grows very fast during the first days of its postembryonic life, the classical S shaped growth curve being steep in the beginning. Growth slows down during the period the feeding changes from crop milk to grains regurgitated from the crop of the parents, and also during the period that the young bird begins to come out of the nest and to feed on his own (Fig. 1).The rate of growth is affected by the quantity of food the young bird receives: in normal conditions there are two young for a couple of parents; when there is only one young, it grows faster; the differences are significative till the 16th day of age (table).  相似文献

Young adult honey bees work inside the beehive "nursing" brood around the clock with no circadian rhythms; older bees forage for nectar and pollen outside with strong circadian rhythms. Previous research has shown that the development of an endogenous rhythm of activity is also seen in the laboratory in a constant environment. Newly emerging bees maintained in isolation are typically arrhythmic during the first few days of adult life and develop strong circadian rhythms by about a few days of age. In addition, average daily levels of period (per) mRNA in the brain are higher in foragers or forager-age bees (> 21 days of age) relative to young nest bees (approximately 7 days of age). The authors used social manipulations to uncouple behavioral rhythmicity, age, and task to determine the relationship between these factors and per. There was no obligate link between average daily levels of per brain mRNA and either behavioral rhythmicity or age. There also were no differences in per brain mRNA levels between nurse bees and foragers in social environments that promote precocious or reversed behavioral development. Nurses and other hive-age bees can have high or low levels of per mRNA levels in the brain, depending on the social environment, while foragers and foraging-age bees always have high levels. These findings suggest a link between honey bee foraging behavior and per up-regulation. Results also suggest task-related differences in the amplitude of per mRNA oscillation in the brain, with foragers having larger diurnal fluctuation in per than nurses, regardless of age. Taken together, these results suggest that social factors may exert potent influences on the regulation of clock genes.  相似文献

We investigate the usefulness of analyses of population differentiation between different ecological types, such as host races of parasites or sources and sink habitats. To that aim, we formulate a model of population structure involving two classes of subpopulations found in sympatry. Extensions of previous results for Wright''s F-statistics in island and isolation-by-distance models of dispersal are given. It is then shown that source and sinks cannot in general be distinguished by F-statistics nor by their gene diversities. The excess differentiation between two partially isolated classes with respect to differentiation within classes is shown to decrease with distance, and for a wide range of parameter values it should be difficult to detect. In the same circumstances little differentiation will be observed in "hierarchical" analyses between pools of samples from each habitat, and differences between levels of differentiation within each habitat will only reflect differences between levels of gene diversity within each habitat. Exceptions will indicate strong isolation between the different classes or habitat-related divergent selection.  相似文献

  • 1 A combination of variables reflecting leaf quality provided the best predictive model explaining differences in population trend of Glycaspis spp. among individuals of the food plant Eucalyptus blakelyi, measured under field conditions on an egg to egg basis. The equation incorporated the product of: (1) proportion of foliage in each age class; (2) probability of foliage escape from herbivory; (3) preference for the foliage class measured as the proportion of eggs oviposited on it by the female; these variables being summed over the young and mature age classes.
  • 2 In addition, significant and consistent differences in insect survivorship among trees were demonstrated by transfer experiments. These experiments established that young foliage was preferable to mature foliage for first instar survival. Differences in insect survivorship also showed a consistent pattern among the study trees. The most probable explanation for this consistent pattern was the influence of the trees on the insects, particularly physiological or biochemical differences among trees. It was not, however, possible to identify the cause of the differences.

The content of total phospholipids and their classes (phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin) of muscles (flesh) and lipid sac of different developmental stages of young fish the daubed shanny, Leptoclinus maculatus from Kongsfjord (Svalbard, Norway) in winter was studied. The content of phospholipids in flesh decreases with age on account of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine that probably related to their role in morphogenesis during differentiation of tissues and organs. The content of phospholipids is lower than reserve lipids in the lipid sac. The level of phospholipids in the lipid sac compared to flesh increases with age of fish reaching the maximum in benthic juveniles. Variations of minor phospholipids content of young fish of the daubed shanny indicate their participation in biochemical mechanisms of adaptation realizing in specific and varying Arctic conditions.  相似文献

Purpose

To compare the variation patterns of ADC and T2 values in different age and intervertebral disc (IVD) levels, thus to identify their sensitivities in assessing age and disc level related IVDs changes.

Materials and Methods

The T2 and ADC values were recorded from 345 IVDs of 69 volunteers. Kendall''s correlation analysis was used to identify the relationship between age and T2/ADC mean values respectively. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc analysis was then applied to test the differences of T2 and ADC values among different IVD levels and age groups, followed by linear regression analysis between age (<45 and >45 years) and T2/ADC mean values. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

Results

Significant negative correlation was observed between age and T2/ADC mean values. The T2 and ADC values showed significant differences among IVD levels and among age groups except for T2 values in age group 1 (25–34 years) and group 2 (35–44 years), and for ADC values at L1–2 level. Both T2 and ADC values showed significant differences between young (age<45 years) and elderly group (age>45 years) at each IVD level. A linear relationship was observed between age and T2/ADC mean values in the elderly group as well as in the young group for the ADC mean values, while no such tendency was identified in the young group for the T2 mean values.

Conclusions

ADC values may be a more sensitive parameter than T2 in assessing age and disc level related intervertebral disc changes.  相似文献

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity was determined in young rat lymphocyte populations. The ADA-specific activity (per 10(8) cells and per milligram protein) was 3- to 10-fold higher in thymocytes than in lymphocytes from thoracic duct, lymph node, spleen, and bone marrow. The high ADA activity in thymocytes appeared to be preferentially associated with cortical thymocytes. Enrichment or depletion of cortical thymocytes by density gradient centrifugation, cortisone treatment, or selective lysis with anti-Thy-1 plus complement resulted in parallel increases or decreases in ADA levles. These results also suggested that medullary thymocytes have ADA levels similar to those of peripheral lymphocytes. "Immature" cortical thymocytes and thymocyte progenitors appeared to have low ADA activity; low enzyme levels were found in fetal thymus at 16 days of embryonic life, in the early phases of thymus regeneration, and in a "null" cell population isolated from bone marrow. This study demonstrates that ADA activity varies markedly during T lymphocyte differentiation and suggests that fundamental differences in nucleotide metabolism may exist in T cells at different stages of development.  相似文献

In the present paper we first studied the brain distribution and the time and dose dependent effects of apotransferrin, after its intracranial injection into young rats and at different post-natal ages. Its action upon the transferrin receptor (TfR) and upon the expression of brain transferrin, as well as its effect on the proliferation and differentiation of oligodendroglial cells (OLGc) was one of the main objectives of our investigation. Total DNA and BrdU labeling, as an index of cellularity and proliferation, respectively, were the same in the control and experimental groups of rats. A significant increase in the MBP+ and CA II+ OLGc, and a decrease in the more immature (A2B5+) OLGc were found in the aTf injected rats. At 10 and 17 days of age, Tf-mRNA decreased to around 20% of the amount present in control animals. The TfR-mRNA in the animals receiving a single dose of aTf at 3 days of age showed an increase in its expression at 10 and 17 days of age, coincident with a higher immunoreactivity of the TfR itself of neurons, choroid plexus and brain capillaries in different brain areas. Although TfR+ OLGc were present up to 7 days of age in controls and in the Tf injected rats, no positive cells were observed at 17 days of age, even in the aTf injected rats. Our results give support to the hypothesis that aTf is an important factor necessary for the maturation of the OLGc, and that the effects that it produces in the OLGc-myelin unit after its intracranial injection in young rats are not due to an increase in proliferation, but to an accelerated differentiation of Tf-sensitive OLGc.  相似文献
