Inter‐individual differences in rates of routine (non‐feeding) metabolism and growth were evaluated in young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua . Rates of O2 consumption, CO2 production and ammonia (TAN) excretion were measured in 64, 25–43 mm standard length ( L S) YOY growing at different rates (0·27–0·47 mm day−1) in a common rearing tank. Parameter rates ( y ) increased allometrically ( y = a·Mb ) with increasing body mass ( M ) with b ‐values for O2 production, CO2 consumption and TAN excretion equal to 0·81, 0·89 and 0·56, respectively. In some cases, residuals from these regressions were significantly negatively correlated to fish growth rate. In no cases did residuals of parameter rates increase with increasing growth rate. These data suggest that, during unfed periods, relatively fast‐growing fish were more metabolically efficient than slower‐growing fish from the same cohort. The fish condition factor, derived from     , also significantly decreased with increasing growth rate. Results indicated differences in both the rates of routine energy loss and the patterns of growth allocation among YOY Atlantic cod. Since these physiological attributes were positively correlated with growth rate, they may be indicative of 'survivors' in field populations.  相似文献

The potyvirus cylindrical inclusion (CI) protein, an RNA helicase required for genome replication, was analyzed genetically using alanine-scanning mutagenesis. Thirty-one mutations were introduced into the CI protein coding region of modified tobacco etch virus (TEV) genomes expressing either β-glucuronidase or green fluorescent protein reporters. Twelve of the mutants were replication-defective in protoplast inoculation assays. Among the 19 replication-competent mutants, several possessed cell-to-cell or long-distance movement defects in tobacco plants. Two mutants, AS1 and AS8, were restricted to single cells in inoculated leaves despite genome amplification levels that were equivalent to that of parental virus. Other mutants, such as AS9 and AS14, were able to move cell to cell slowly but were debilitated in long-distance movement. These data provide genetic evidence for a direct role of CI protein in potyvirus intercellular movement, and for distinct roles of the CI protein in genome replication and movement. In combination with high-resolution ultrastructural analyzes and previous genetic data, these results support a model in which CI protein interacts directly with plasmodesmata and capsid protein-containing ribonucleoprotein complexes to facilitate potyvirus cell-to-cell movement.  相似文献

1. We surveyed 62 Canadian Shield lakes (<50 ha) to determine the relationship between factors related to isolation and extinction and the occurrence of brook trout (BT) (Salvelinus fontinalis), for which local extinctions have been documented over the last century in half of the lakes. 2. Logistic regression and information–theoretic model selection were used to determine the importance for the occupancy of BT of (i) isolation factors (degree of lake connectivity and the proximity of source populations of BT in neighbouring bodies of water) and (ii) extinction factors (lake morphometry and trophic status, as proxies of the risk of lake anoxia; predation and competition; and flooding caused by beaver (Castor canadensis) dams, which could potentially increase the risk of anoxia). 3. Isolation factors were the best predictors of the absence of BT in these lakes. Among extinction factors, only the impact of beaver dams (as measured by an index of increased water level and mortality of shrubs and trees in the littoral zone) improved model fits. Beaver dams were present at the outlets of all study lakes, but extensive mortality of riparian trees and shrubs was more common in lakes where BT populations were extinct. 4. Taken together, these results suggest that recolonization is a major factor determining the occurrence of BT while flooding caused by beaver dams might contribute to BT extinction by increasing the likelihood of winterkill in these small lakes.  相似文献

Total length, body mass and gut content mass of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) perch Perca fluviatilis, dace Leuciscus leuciscus and bleak Alburnus alburnus were recorded over the summer of 2006 at three littoral sites at Upper Lake Constance. In P. fluviatilis and L. leuciscus, gut content mass correlated positively with wave‐induced energy flux (EF) of the respective site and sampling day, while no correlation of gut content mass with EF was found in A. alburnus. It was assumed that benthivorous P. fluviatilis and L. leuciscus profited from suspended or uncovered benthic food items generated by wave action at sites and periods with high EF. Alburnus alburnus, in contrast, feeding mainly on zooplankton in upper parts of the water column, could not profit from increased EF. In P. fluviatilis, increased gut content mass during periods of high EF resulted in higher growth rates. For L. leuciscus, no real growth rates in local fish populations could be determined, as individuals were less sedentary, and when increased growth occurred at sites during the periods of high EF, migration of fish levelled out the resulting size differences within few days. The results of this study show that dynamic habitat variables affect site profitability in the littoral zone of lakes, especially in benthivorous fishes. Therefore, dynamic habitat variables should be considered in addition to fixed habitat properties in analyses of habitat choice of fishes in the littoral zone of lakes.  相似文献

Species composition and seasonal, dynamics of zooplankton in the littoral zone were studied in three piedmont North Carolina lakes for one year. Nygaard's compound index indicated oligotrophic conditions in Belews Lake and eutrophic conditions in Salem Lake and Lake 150. A total of 32 species of zooplankton were found in the samples. Significantly fewer species of truely littoral zooplankton were present in the oligotrophic lake regardless of season (P < 0.05). Eutrophication appears to favor increased diversity in zooplankton of the littoral zone. Habitat heterogeneity, provided by a well developed littoral zone containing aquatic macrophytes, may be the major factor contributing to the maintenance of more taxa of zooplankton in eutrophic systems.Distinct taxa of Cladocera and Copepoda are present in the littoral zone, exhibiting seasonal dynamics that are largely different from the limnetic fauna. Such dynamics may result from predation by characteristically limnetic species of cyclopoid copepods which seek prey in the littoral zone. The numerical and seasonal abundance of predators and prey are inversely related and the true littoral taxa, represented in the present study by the genera Alona, Chydorus, Pleuroxus, Sida, Simocephalus, and Eucyclops, contained no predaceous species. The seasonal dynamics of these genera are very similar even in widely separated geographical regions, indicating that the factor(s) responsible operate independently of climatic and chemical variables. Intrazooplankton predation appears to be a more plausable explanation than segregation along depth which, although consistent with data from studies of limnetic waters, cannot be related to populations of zooplankton in shallow littoral areas.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrates play a key role in the littoral zone of lakes. Macroinvertebrate community composition is closely linked to habitat conditions. To date, there have been few attempts to relate macroinvertebrates to habitat factors in lakes. In this study, nine mainly oligotrophic lakes from throughout New Zealand were surveyed for macroinvertebrates. The lakes were selected to represent a range of suspended sediment loading and lake level regimes. Within each lake, several sites were selected to provide a range of exposure to wave action. A multiple regression approach was taken to relate macroinvertebrate community composition and habitat characteristics. The results of the analysis suggest that the littoral zone of the lakes we studied could be divided into four general habitats. The first is the wave wash zone characterised by coarse substrates and macroinvertebrate taxa usually associated with lotic environments, such as Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera. The second habitat is associated with macrophytes and is limited at the top by wave action and at depth by light attenuation. In this zone, the snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum is dominant, along with Trichoptera and Odonata. At the base of the macrophytes is the detrital habitat characterised by fine, organic rich sediments and dominated by chironomids, oligochaetes and Trichoptera. At depths below the macrophyte zone, fine sediments are found, and bivalves such as the freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi are common. While macroinvertebrate abundance can be highly variable, some general predictions of community structure can be made based on a few key environmental factors. Abundance of snails Odonata and Trichoptera was positively related to macrophyte biomass. Some macroinvertebrate groups such as oligochaetes, chironomids, snails and bivalves were more common in fine substrates, while Ephemeroptera were characteristic of coarse substrates. Detrital biomass was important for most of the macroinvertebrate groups studied showing a positive relationship for oligochaetes and Trichoptera and a negative relationship for Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera.  相似文献

1. Fisheries models generally are based on the concept that strong density dependence exists in fish populations. Nonetheless, there are few examples of long‐term density dependence in fish populations. 2. Using an information theoretical approach (AIC) with regression analyses, we examined the explanatory power of density dependence, flow and water temperature on the per capita rate of change and growth (annual mean total length) for the whole population, adults, 1+ and young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in Hunt Creek, Michigan, USA, between 1951 and 2001. This time series represents one of the longest quantitative population data sets for fishes. 3. Our analysis included four data sets: (i) Pooled (1951–2001), (ii) Fished (1951–65), (iii) Unfished (1966–2001) and (iv) Temperature (1982–2001). 4. Principle component analyses of winter flow data identified a gradient between years with high mean daily winter flows, high daily maximum and minimum flows and frequent high flow events, and years with an opposite set of flow characteristics. Flows were lower during the Fished Period than during the Unfished Period. Winter temperature analyses elucidated a gradient between warm mean, warm minimum and maximum daily stream temperatures and a high number of minimum daily temperatures >6.1 °C, and years with the opposite characteristics. Summer temperature analyses contrasted years with warm summer stream temperatures vs years with cool summer stream temperatures. 5. Both YOY and adult densities varied several‐fold during the study. Regression analysis did not detect a significant linear or nonlinear stock–recruitment relationship. AIC analysis indicated that density dependence was present in 15 of 16 cases (four population segments × four data sets) for both per capita rate of increase (wi values 0.46–1.00) and growth data (wi values 0.28–0.99). The almost ubiquitous presence of density dependence in both population and growth data is concordant with results from other trout populations and other studies in Michigan.  相似文献

1. The annual dynamics of methane (CH4) in a temporarily flooded meadow, mire bank, lacustrine sedge fen, temporarily and continuously inundated sedge ( Carex sp.) and reed ( Phragmites australis ) marshes were studied from June to November in the humic mesoeutrophic Lake Mekrijärvi and in eutrophicated parts of the mesotrophic Lake Heposelkä in the southern part of East Finland. The effects of water level and temperature on littoral CH4 fluxes were determined. Vegetation zonation along the moisture gradient, and associated CH4 fluxes, were evaluated.
2. The CH4 flux increased along the moisture gradient from –0.2 to 14.2 mg CH4 m–2 h–1, and was highest in the permanently inundated marshes. The duration of anoxia in the sediment caused differences in the CH4 flux. Estimated emissions for the period 1 June – 30 September in continuously inundated sparse reed and sedge marshes, drying sedge marsh, and lacustrine sedge fen were 13, 11 and 6 g CH4 m–2, respectively.
3. In continuously inundated vegetation, the fluxes were highest in late July/early August. The seasonal CH4 flux pattern suggested that the fluxes were regulated by the supply of organic matter during the course of the summer and the water level. In the temporarily flooded zone, the seasonal CH4 flux dynamics was greatly affected by changes in the lake water level, the fluxes being highest during the spring flood in early June.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The distribution of twenty species of Naididae found in seventeen lakes in North Wales and Shropshire is described. Fewer species were observed in the mountain lakes in Snowdonia in comparison to the more productive lakes of Anglesey and Shropshire.
Substrate was an important factor influencing the distribution of naids within lakes, A small number of sexually mature individuals was found in more productive lakes in the summer and autumn months. Sexually mature individuals of Stylaria lacustris were cultured in the laboratory; the population doubled its numbers, by asexual reproduction, in 12 days at 15°C. In Llyn Coron a natural population of S. lacustris doubled its numbers in 40 days. The gut contents of S. lacustris consisted of periphyton.  相似文献

1. We studied the spatial organisation of littoral, benthic invertebrate communities in two large oligotrophic lakes with very extensive heterogeneous littoral zones, and report that littoral communities show significant variation in their structure at multiple spatial scales. 2. At coarser scales, littoral zone topography, riparian inputs and exposure may be important drivers of community spatial structure. At finer scales, the composition of substrates, particularly macrophytes and inorganic sediments, may be drivers of community spatial structure. 3. The effects of substrates on community spatial patterns were non‐additive across scales; community‐habitat correspondence became very noisy when we attempted to extrapolate results throughout the littoral. We present some evidence to suggest that this non‐additivity is because of the interaction among structuring processes that operate at different scales.  相似文献

Marine and terrestrial environments differ fundamentally in space‐time scales of both physical and ecological processes. These differences will have an impact on the animals inhabiting each domain, particularly with respect to their spatial ecology. The behavioural strategies that underpin observed distributions of marine species are therefore important to consider. Comparatively little is known, however, about how wild fishes actually respond to gradients in food supply and temperature, and to potential mates. This paper describes how behavioural theory is being used to elucidate the strategies and tactics of free‐ranging sharks in three specific areas of study, namely, foraging on zooplankton, behavioural energetics and sexual segregation. The studies discussed are novel because shark movements were tracked in the wild using electronic tags in relation to simultaneous measurements of prey densities and thermal resources. The results show that filter‐feeding (basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus ) and predatory (dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula ) sharks have relatively complex behaviour patterns integrally linked to maximizing surplus power, often through making short and longer term 'trade‐off' decisions between optimal foraging and thermal habitats. Interestingly, female S. canicula exhibit alternative behavioural strategies compared to males, a difference resulting in spatial segregation by habitat. Sexual segregation in this species occurs primarily as a consequence of male avoidance by females. Studies on free‐ranging sharks provide a useful model system for examining how a predator's strategy is shaped by its environment. More theory‐based studies of the behavioural processes of sharks are required however, before critical comparisons with other vertebrate predators are possible. Suggestions for further research to address this knowledge gap are given.  相似文献

We examined the abundance and meso‐habitat use of gobiid species during both day and night along 43 stretches (500‐m long) of the littoral zone at five locations of the Middle Danube, Hungary, in spring and in summer 2004. Electro‐fishing catch per unit effort sampling revealed significantly higher relative densities at night than during the day. Gobiids occupied all the available habitats encountered during sampling. Habitat‐abundance relationships from night‐time samples revealed that the two most abundant species, round goby Neogobius melanostomus and bighead goby Neogobius kessleri, were found in highest relative density along gravel beach and artificial rip‐rap habitats; these species were in relatively low density in sandy areas. Monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis was more abundant in natural shorelines than in rip‐rap habitats and dispersed more consistently between sandy and gravel beaches. Tubenose goby Proterorhinus marmoratus demonstrated great plasticity in meso‐habitat use. In conclusion, Ponto‐Caspian gobies occurred rather consistently along the Hungarian section of the Danube, occupying all available habitats examined. Abundance‐habitat relations suggest plasticity in meso‐habitat use but partial segregation between species. Further studies are required at multiple spatial scales to assess how micro‐ and meso‐habitat use varies with fluctuating population densities.  相似文献

Up to 30 species of fish were generally found in medium-sized rainforest streams in Sabah, Malaysia. However, depauperate fish communities were found in two streams above large (>8 m) waterfalls (five and nine species) and in two very small streams located in deep forest (five and six species). A fifth stream with small cascades and waterfalls had a faunal list of 12 species. Species resident above waterfalls were predominantly herbivores while fishes in the two forest streams were from a variety of trophic groups. Abundance and biomass of fishes above waterfalls were significantly lower than all other sites. A translocation experiment was performed in one stream to distinguish between the hypotheses that fish communities above waterfalls were determined solely by colonization ability and were unsaturated with species or that they were limited by habitat quality or food. Seven species (775 individuals) were trans located into one isolated section and four species (570 individuals) into another. Species that were trans located included trophic groups that were not represented by resident species. Twelve months after translocation, only four and one trans located species were collected in the two sections, all at greatly reduced densities. After 20 months, the number of species were three and two, respectively. One trans located species, Rasbora sumatrana , had increased in abundance from 12 months and juveniles were present in the population. Individuals of other trans located species appeared to be remnants of stocked populations. Abundance and biomass of resident species fluctuated widely between years. Interpretation of results was complicated by a large flood which substantially changed habitat conditions about a month after translocations were performed. It is suggested that two different factors were responsible for depauperate communities: movement barriers for waterfall sites and physicochemical conditions and/or habitat availability at other sites.  相似文献

1. The influence of land use and physico-chemical factors on stream macroinvertebrates was analysed at fifteen sites over a 2-year period in a single conifer-afforested catchment in Ireland, in an area subject to very low levels of atmospheric pollution. 2. Macroinvertebrate assemblages were classified using two-way indicator species analysis into five major groupings that were related to distance from headwaters and land use. Trends in macroinvertebrate community composition were related to changes in physico-chemical and biotic characteristics of the river and its tributaries using canonical correspondence analysis. 3. Local ecological factors (e.g. acid water, moss, shading or agricultural runoff), longitudinal trends in stream physico-chemistry (related to distance from headwaters, geology and land use) and season (related to life history patterns of the invertebrates) were the explanatory variables of spatio-temporal patterns in macroinvertebrate community composition in the catchment. 4. Spatial variation in macroinvertebrate density, taxon richness, diversity and evenness was investigated in relation to environmental characteristics of the study sites using Spearman’s rank correlation, principal components analysis and stepwise multiple regression. Invertebrate density and richness increased with distance from the headwater and associated increases in pH, water hardness and nutrients. Macroinvertebrate density and richness also increased with increasing moss weight. Invertebrate diversity and evenness increased with shading of the channel. 5. The increase in macroinvertebrate density and richness and changes in community composition were particularly marked over a relatively short (1.2 km) distance in one tributary, and were concurrent with a rapid increase in stream pH of 1.7 units. 6. Although macroinvertebrate communities at conifer-afforested sites were not impoverished in the same way as those in some other parts of Europe, they differed from the communities found above and below the plantation. This appeared to be owing to the primary importance of local ecological factors and the effect that the longitudinal position of these forest sites within the river system had on their physico-chemical and biotic nature.  相似文献

Juvenile salmonids are visual predators that primarily feed on drifting invertebrates and compete for suitable feeding positions in swift water. We used an outdoor experimental stream to test the effect of visual isolation on agonistic interactions and habitat use by age‐1 brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) in riffle‐pool sections. We hypothesized that dominant fish defend suitable feeding positions in riffle and that visual obstruction between individuals enhance access to riffle for subordinates. Groups of juveniles, caught in the wild, were stocked in high and low visibility treatments. Visual isolation was manipulated by placing dark plastic ribbons or opaque Plexiglas boards onto the substrate of riffles. As expected, dominant fish held profitable positions in riffle and the proportion of fish in riffle significantly increased in presence of artificial structures. In high visibility treatment, the dominant fish despotically excluded subordinates from the riffle. In low visibility treatment, the proportion of fish that foraged on benthic prey in the pool and the number of major aggressive acts (chase, nip) decreased. Our results support the hypothesis that screening effect of physical structures in the water column loosen resource monopolization in dominance hierarchies of juvenile salmonids.  相似文献

The importance of detritus varies greatly among shore zones of lakes, but in a large majority of these regions detrital pathways prevail. Aside from a great spatial and seasonal variability, macrophytes and bottom sediments appear to be dominant stores of nutrients in these habitats. Macrophytes hold a central position in nutrient cycling in the shore-littoral lake zones. They are the main source of autochthonous detritus as they prevail in the total biomass of littoral organisms, and they are only rarely available as direct food of consumers. Various processes and interactions determine the role of macrophytes in nutrients dynamics. These are: the intensity of nutrient uptake and translocation, release of nutrients by healthy plants and from decomposing plants, exchange of elements between macrophytes and their periphyton, as well as interception of seston by macrophyte stands. Particular plant species differ in their time of dying and susceptibility to decomposition. The changes in decomposing material (size structure of particles and nutrient content) mean that detritus in various stages of decomposition differs in its role in trophic dynamics of shore-littoral lake zones. Several types of shore regions as regards detritus sources and retention level are discussed.  相似文献

One hundred and ten cervical smears were circulated to five specialist consultant cytopathologists and five consultant histopathologists. Of these smears, 100 were randomized and re‐circulated. The cytopathologists reported endocervical cells and wart virus infection more frequently than the histopathologists, although neither group showed good inter‐observer agreement for either assessment. Apart from smear adequacy and the presence of endocervical cells, both groups showed good intra‐observer agreement in all the parameters measured. This suggests that overall individuals were applying their own personal criteria with consistency over time, although a previous study had shown considerable lack of inter‐observer agreement among the histopathologists on the grade of dyskaryosis and the management recommendation. The results indicate that specialist cytopathologists bring a different viewpoint to the reporting of cervical smears than histopathologists. They also show a lack of standardization in the reporting of smears despite the guidelines issued by the British Society for Clinical Cytology.  相似文献
