Seventy-six California quail (Callipepla californica) were collected during a 22-mo period from the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Area near Monmouth, Oregon. Dispharynx nasuta occurred in 38% of the birds with a mean intensity of 4.9 +/- 5.1. In one of 2 yr, host age was significantly associated with prevalence, with immature males showing the highest prevalence (73%). Although C. californica has been the subject of several parasitological surveys, this is the first record of D. nasuta in this host.  相似文献

We conducted comparative chromosome painting and chromosome mapping with chicken DNA probes against the blue-breasted quail (Coturnix chinensis, CCH) and California quail (Callipepla californica, CCA), which are classified into the Old World quail and the New World quail, respectively. Each chicken probe of chromosomes 1-9 and Z painted a pair of chromosomes in the blue-breasted quail. In California quail, chicken chromosome 2 probe painted chromosomes 3 and 6, and chicken chromosome 4 probe painted chromosomes 4 and a pair of microchromosomes. Comparison of the cytogenetic maps of the two quail species with those of chicken and Japanese quail revealed that there are several intrachromosomal rearrangements, pericentric and/or paracentric inversions, in chromosomes 1, 2 and 4 between chicken and the Old World quail. In addition, a pericentric inversion was found in chromosome 8 between chicken and the three quail species. Ordering of the Z-linked DNA clones revealed the presence of multiple rearrangements in the Z chromosomes of the three quail species. Comparing these results with the molecular phylogeny of Galliformes species, it was also cytogenetically supported that the New World quail is classified into a different clade from the lineage containing chicken and the Old World quail.  相似文献

Callipepla californica and C. gambelii are sibling species of quail that hybridize throughout Southern California where their ranges overlap. We developed seven highly polymorphic microsatellite markers that will be used to assess introgression between these species. Numbers of alleles ranged in C. californica from seven to 24 and in C. gambelii from five to 18, with high expected levels of heterozygosity in both species. Alleles exclusive to each species are present at most loci.  相似文献

Forty-eight scaled quail (Callipepla squamata) were collected during August 2002 at Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area in Brewster County, Texas, and examined for helminths. Eight species of helminths were found (5 nematodes and 3 cestodes), representing 2,811 individuals. Of these species, Gongylonema sp., Procyrnea pileata, and Choanotaenia infundibulum are reported from scaled quail for the first time. Prevalence of Aulonocephalus pennula, Gongylonema sp., Oxyspirura petrowi, Physaloptera sp., P. pileata, C. infundibulum, Fuhrmannetta sp., and Rhabdometra odiosa was 98, 2, 56, 4, 60, 2, 25, and 35%, respectively. Aulonocephalus pennula numerically dominated, accounting for 88% of total worms. Statistical analyses were performed on the 5 species with > or = 25% prevalence using the after-hatch-year host sample (n = 38). Prevalence of P. pileata was higher (P = 0.049) in females than in males and higher (P = 0.037) in the sample collected from the site that had spreader dams (berms 1-2 m high and 4-55 m long constructed in varying sizes to catch and retain rainfall) than the control site (no spreader dams). Higher rank mean abundance of A. pennula and O. petrowi (P = 0.0001 and P = 0.0052, respectively) was found in the host sample collected from the site that had spreader dams than the control site. A host gender-by-collection site interaction (P = 0.0215) was observed for P. pileata. Findings indicate that scaled quail are acquiring indirect life cycle helminths in arid western Texas habitats.  相似文献

Abstract Hybridizing California and Gambel's Quail ( Callipepla californica and C. gambelii ) are unlike many hybridizing avian species in that pairing primarily occurs within a flock, or covey, that is composed of several families. Coveys in the area of sympatry contain mostly hybrid individuals, relative to parental types. I tested whether individuals perceive covey mates as a single species and whether pairing within the covey causes inbreeding and a loss of reproductive success. Individuals discriminated between the parental species in captivity, but actual pairing in the wild was random with respect to species. Contrary to expectation, coveys were not more inbred than the local population. Results suggest that potential costs of inbreeding may be avoided through sex-biased dispersal and nonrandom pairing. Furthermore, breeding occurred earlier and with greater success in pairs formed within the resident covey, rather than outside it. These findings suggest that fitness benefits gained from pairing early within a mixed-species covey promote interspecific pairing. This study provides evidence that mating behaviors specific to local conditions maintain hybrid zones when genetic costs to interbreeding are small.  相似文献

Allopatric species commonly interbreed in a restricted margin between their ranges. The particular factors that permit interbreeding between species determine the extent of hybridization and its significance for evolution and conservation. Using California quail and Gambel's quail (Callipepla californica and C. gambelii) that naturally hybridize in a narrow region between relatively mesic and xeric environments, I assessed the exchange of genetic and phenotypic traits in relation to vegetative and climatic features (temperature and precipitation) that characterize the area of range overlap, and I examined genetic and phenotypic traits within the hybrid zone over a five-year period in relation to variation in precipitation. Using microsatellite markers, this study reveals that genetic, plumage, and morphometric traits are tightly associated with vegetation, rainfall, and temperature profiles through the abrupt transition from one parental species to the other across the hybrid zone. Results show that the hybrid zone has remained clinal, stationary, and bounded over the five-year study period. There was no evidence of introgression outside the narrow hybrid zone. Interannual climatic fluctuations are associated with internal hybrid zone dynamics but did not alter the shape and position of the zone. A transect through the hybrid zone revealed rapid and episodic genetic mixing within the zone. Possible long-term consequences of this restricted hybridization for the evolution of the two parental species are discussed in the light of changing environments.  相似文献

Acoustic signals sometimes act as premating isolating barriers between animal species, but we know little about the circumstances that dictate the presence and strength of these barriers. Among insects, barriers to backcrossing are strengthened by acoustic signals that are under genetic control. Hybrid signals tend to be intermediate to parental signals, and signals are recognized only by like‐types, which results in reinforced species boundaries. This is not typically the case in avian taxa. Instead, acoustic signal transmission is controlled by some combination of genes and learning, and perhaps as a consequence of this variation, vocalizations play a diversity of roles in avian hybrid zones. I used California and Gambel's quail (Callipepla californica and C. gambelii), hybridizing birds that do not learn to vocalize, to explore whether genetically determined vocalizations function as a species barrier. Using spectral analysis, I measured temporal features of calls of uniquely colour‐banded quail that were recorded across one area of the California and Gambel's quail hybrid zone. Species discrimination is known to occur under captive conditions, though its basis is unexplored. Here I show that differences in the calls of parental species are likely great enough to permit species discrimination. Hybrid call components were intermediate to those of the parental species and covaried with genetic traits, as assessed with seven highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. Contrary to expectation, males as frequently called in response to unlike‐ as like‐type females who had initiated antiphonal calling, which is a courtship call between a female and a male. Furthermore, paired males and females did not share like‐type assembly calls, nor was there a correlation between the female's genetic or plumage traits and her mate's advertisement call. Based on these results, I conclude that California and Gambel's quail recognize each other and hybrids as potential mates and backcrossing occurs frequently. Thus, compatible mating signals could contribute to increased mixing of gene pools and slow the rate of speciation. I suggest that selection to respond to wide signal variation within species and imprinting on calls of mixed‐species coveys may cause mating signal compatibility between classes within the area of hybridization. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 86 , 253–264.  相似文献

California quail (Lophortyx californicus) from several locations in Oregon were examined seasonally between fall 1975 and summer 1978 for avian pox. Pox lesions were present on 66 of 256 (26%) birds from the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area. None of the remaining 41 birds from other areas was infected. Rates of infection of males and females were equal; juveniles had a slightly, but not significantly, higher prevalence of pox than did adults.  相似文献

Some studies have implicated the avian digestive cecae as important sites of water and solute reclamation working in concert with the lower intestine and the kidneys as part of an integrated osmoregulatory system. In Gambel's quail (Callipepla gambelii), we studied compensatory adjustments in renal function on days 6–7 and 16–17 following ligation of cecae. Plasma osmolality (Posm) varied significantly between groups with sham-operatd birds (Cs), with an average (Posm) of 348 mOsm/kg H2O and quail with ligated cecae (Cx) having a (Posm) of 355 mOsm/kg H2O. We detected no change in the rate of glomerular filtration (GFR) between experimental and control groups either shortly after cecectomy or after 16–17 d following surgery. Regression analysis of GFR and urine flow rate (V) showed that Cx birds had a significantly lower V at a given GFR than did controls, evidence that Cx quail absorbed more fluid in their renal tubules. Increased fluid reabsorption was apparently driven by an enhanced reabsorption of sodium. Indeed, sodium excretion was lower in Cx quail as compared to sham-operated birds. On days 6–7, Cx quail drank more water than Cs birds, but by days 16–17 drinking rates were similar. At the end of the experiments, Cx quail showed a proliferation of microvilli along the apical membrane of the rectum, an adjustment consistent with the idea that the rectum alters its absorption capacity to adjust for the loss of cecal function.  相似文献

Migratory species employ a variety of strategies to meet energetic demands of postbreeding molt. As such, at least a few species of western Neotropical migrants are known to undergo short‐distance upslope movements to locations where adults molt body and flight feathers (altitudinal molt migration). Given inherent difficulties in measuring subtle movements of birds occurring in western mountains, we believe that altitudinal molt migration may be a common yet poorly documented phenomenon. To examine prevalence of altitudinal molt migration, we used 29 years of bird capture data in a series of linear mixed‐effect models for nine commonly captured species that breed in northern California and southern Oregon. Candidate models were formulated a priori to examine whether elevation and distance from the coast can be used to predict abundance of breeding and molting birds. Our results suggest that long‐distance migrants such as Orange‐crowned Warbler (Oreothlypis celata) moved higher in elevation and Audubon's Warbler (Setophaga coronata) moved farther inland to molt after breeding. Conversely, for resident and short‐distance migrants, we found evidence that birds either remained on the breeding grounds until they finished molting, such as Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) or made small downslope movements, such as American Robin (Turdus migratorius). We conclude that altitudinal molt migration may be a common, variable, and complex behavior among western songbird communities and is related to other aspects of a species’ natural history, such as migratory strategy.  相似文献

Seventy raccoons (Procyon lotor) from western Kentucky were examined for helminths from December 1985 through May 1986. Twenty-three species of helminths were collected including 10 species of Trematoda (Brachylaima virginiana, Euryhelmis squamula, Eurytrema procyonis, Fibricola cratera, Gyrosoma singulare, Maritreminoides nettae, Mesostephanus appendiculatoides, Metagonimoides oregonensis, Paragonimus kellicotti, Pharyngostomoides procyonis), 2 species of Cestoda (Atriotaenia procyonis, Mesocestoides variabilis), 10 species of Nematoda (Arthrocephalus lotoris, Baylisascaris procyonis, Capillaria putorii, C. plica, Crenosoma goblei, Dracunculus insignis, Gnathostoma procyonis, Molineus barbatus, Physaloptera rara, Trichinella spiralis), and 1 species of Acanthocephala (Macracanthorhynchus ingens). A mean of 6.4 (3-11) helminth species per host was recorded. Fibricola cratera, Atriotaenia procyonis, Mesocestoides variabilis, Arthrocephalus lotoris, Capillaria plica, Dracunculus insignis, Molineus barbatus, and Physaloptera rara were ubiquitous parasites of the raccoon, whereas specific nidi were observed for Eurytrema procyonis, Gyrosoma singulare, Paragonimus kellicotti, Baylisascaris procyonis, Trichinella spiralis, and Macracanthorhyncus ingens. With an overall prevalence of 10% or higher, 15 of the 23 helminth species were considered common parasites of the raccoon in western Kentucky. When the 10% prevalence rate was applied within geographical quadrants to correct for the presence of nidi it was found that 18 of the 23 helminth species were common and 5 were regarded as rare parasites of the raccoon. Two species of nematodes, T. spiralis and B. procyonis, displayed a markedly higher prevalence in male raccoons.  相似文献

Prevalences of poxvirus in a population of California quail (Callipepla californica) at the E. E. Wilson Wildlife Area, Oregon, were determined from 1982 through 1987 and compared with previously published results on prevalences in this population from 1975 to 1979. Poxvirus was present in 19 of 89 quail collected. Prevalences ranged from 6% for immature females to 41% for immature males. Prevalences were lowest during summer and fall and highest in winter and spring. Differences in the seasonal prevalences may be related to the seasonal dispersion pattern of quail.  相似文献

We determined the complete amino acid sequences of the hemoglobin of two species, guinea fowl and California quail, in Galliformes from intact globin chain and chemical cleavage fragments in order to analyze the molecular evolution of hemoglobin for the classification of Galliformes. Galliformes have two types of hemoglobin components, HbA and HbD, which consist of identical chain and different chains. The sequences are similar to globin chains of Galliformes reported previously. These sequences were compared with those of other Galliformes (Phasianidae, Meleagrididae) using duck and goshawk as out-groups. The phylogenetic tree of major groups of Galliformes based on hemoglobin was similar to the tree model produced based on the amino acid sequence of lysozyme c.  相似文献

Helminths of mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula fulvorufula) and gray rhebok (Pelea capreolus) were investigated in South Africa between June 1999 and February 2002. Forty-one mountain reedbuck were culled at Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve over 8 different periods, and 25 mountain reedbuck were culled at Tussen die Riviere Nature Reserve over 3 different periods. A total of 17 kinds of helminths were found at the 2 sites, including 15 nematodes, 1 trematode, and 1 cestode. At Sterkfontein, the most prevalent and abundant species were Cooperia yoshidai, Longistrongylus schrenki, and Haemonchus contortus, with the latter 2 being more abundant during November/December than at other times of the year, probably because infective larvae increased on pasture at that time. No statistical differences were found in parasite loads between male and female mountain reedbuck. No correlation was found between fecal egg counts and adult worm counts or between parasite counts and body condition. At Tussen die Riviere, helminths in mountain reedbuck were less prevalent and abundant than at Sterkfontein. The most important species were Nematodirus spathiger, Trichostrongylus falculatus, and Cooperia rotundispiculum. Four gray rhebok died of natural causes at Sterkfontein, from which 5 kinds of helminths were recovered, including C. yoshidai and Paracooperioides peleae.  相似文献

Insight into the speed and predictability of local adaptation can be gained by studying organisms, such as invasive species, that have recently expanded their geographical ranges. Common garden studies were designed to address these issues with the California poppy, Eschscholzia californica, collected from a wide range of environments in both its native (California) and invasive (Chile) ranges. We found similar patterns of plant trait variation along similar abiotic gradients in plants collected from both areas. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that coastal plants from both areas tended to be shorter, smaller plants with smaller seeds and flowers that germinate and flower later than plants collected from inland locations. In addition, size and fecundity traits in both native and invasive poppies were correlated with average rainfall totals; the plants that grew the largest and were the most fecund during the first year of growth originated from the driest areas. This parallel variation suggests that these traits are adaptive and that these patterns have evolved in Chile during the 110-150 years since introduction.  相似文献

Analysis of 12 microsatellite loci from431 mountain lions (Puma concolor)revealed distinct genetic subdivision that wasassociated with geographic barriers andisolation by distance in California. Levels ofgenetic variation differed among geographicregions, and mountain lions that inhabitedcoastal areas exhibited less heterozygositythan those sampled inland. The San FranciscoBay and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, theCentral Valley, and the Los Angeles Basinappeared to be substantial barriers to geneflow, and allele frequencies of populationsseparated by those features differedsubstantially. A partial barrier to gene flowappeared to exist along the crest of the SierraNevada. Estimated gene flow was high amongmountain lions inhabiting the Modoc Plateau, the western Sierra Nevada, and northern sectionof the eastern Sierra Nevada. SouthernCalifornia mountain lion populations mayfunction as a metapopulation; however, humandevelopments threaten to eliminate habitat andmovement corridors. While north-south geneflow along the western Sierra Nevada wasestimated to be very high, projected loss andfragmentation of foothill habitat may reducegene flow and subdivide populations. Preservation of existing movement corridorsamong regions could prevent population declinesand loss of genetic variation. This studyshows that mountain lion management andconservation efforts should be individualizedaccording to region and incorporatelandscape-level considerations to protecthabitat connectivity.  相似文献

Sampling recommendations were developed for a potato bait sampling method used to estimate garden symphylan (Scutigerella immaculata Newport) densities in western Oregon. Sample size requirements were developed using Taylor's power law to describe the relationship between sample means and variances. Developed sampling recommendations performed well at sample sizes of 30 and greater, when validated by resampling a cohort of 40 independent data sets. Sample size requirements for the bait sampling method were 1.5 times greater than the requirements for the soil sampling method over densities from 1 to 20 S. immaculata per sample unit. As S. immaculata densities increased from April to May, sample size requirements decreased by 36% for fixed precision levels. For sampling in April, decreasing the damage threshold from 20, to 10 and five S. immaculata per sample unit, required a 1.6 and 2.5 times greater sample size requirement, respectively, for a fixed precision level (c) appropriate for pest management (c = 0.25). The bait sampling method provides an efficient reliable alternative to the standard soil sampling method used to monitor garden symphylan populations.  相似文献
