Otolith microstructure of Oxygymnocypris stewartii collected from the Lhasa River was examined and described with regards to the early life history events. The monthly changes in the number of microincrements on the margin of the otolith were examined to validate the approximately daily periodicity of otolith increment formation. The microstructure of otoliths was used to detect changes in microincrement deposition patterns corresponding with events during early life. The annuli, microincrements and checks including the hatch check, yolk absorption check and several recurrent patterns in the otolith were described. Periodicity of the recurrent patterns was weekly, fortnightly and monthly. Through counting the number of the microincrements, it was confirmed that the primary growth of O. stewartii was in a period of 7 or 8 months from late March to October; it was estimated that O. stewartii might hatch between April and May.  相似文献

Synopsis The otoliths of an adult red-bellied piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri, captured from a reservoir in Hawaii were scrutinized to determine the fish's origin and growth history. Sagittal otoliths of the piranha, P. nattereri, contained internal microincrements visible by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The medial cross sectional plane of the sagitta was resolved to provide counts for the most visible micro-increments. An opportune spawning of confiscated adults provided samples for verification of daily increment formation. Daily formation of microincrements was verified from hatched individuals, and confirmed the suitability of otoliths for revealing daily patterns in the age and growth of piranhas. The central area of the sagitta was diffuse in regards to otolith microstructure and indicated the fish was held in an unchanging environment (aquarium). Therefore, otoliths provide important life history or forensic information incorporated within their structural components. The visualization of daily microincrements in the otolith of a juvenile allowed the determination of age at and since release. Fish grew rapidly after being released into the wild. From otolith increments the date of release for an individual fish can be calculated with acceptable accuracy. As presented, otolith structural information can provide age and growth data which are essential to the management of introduced species.  相似文献

The summer diet of two species of icefishes (Channichthyidae) from the South Shetland Islands and Elephant Island, Champsocephalus gunnari and Chaenocephalus aceratus, was investigated from 2001 to 2003. Champsocephalus gunnari fed almost exclusively on krill (Euphausia superba) in all years. The importance of other taxa (Themisto gaudichaudii, mysids, myctophids) in the diet was negligible. The average feeding rate of Champsocephalus gunnari inferred from an exponential gastric evacuation model was between 1.0 and 1.5% body weight per day. Most of the stomachs of Chaenocephalus aceratus were empty. Stomachs with food contained mainly krill, mysids and fish. Among the fish taken, locally abundant species formed the bulk of the diet: Gobionotothen gibberifrons in 2001, Lepidonotothen larseni and Champsocephalus gunnari in 2002 and L. larseni in 2003. An ontogenetic shift in feeding preference of Chaenocephalus aceratus was observed: fish smaller than 30 cm fed on krill and mysids, while larger animals relied primarily on fish.  相似文献

Summary Investigations were performed on otoliths from Champsocephalus gunnari and Notothenia rossii marmorata as part of an effort to study the population dynamics of Antarctic fishes. Examination of otoliths by scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed internal microincrements which were similar to daily increments described for other fish species. No easily identifiable annuli could be discerned and fishes were aged by counting microincrements. Multiple regression analyses relating age to otolith morphometrics and fish size, provided a simpler ageing method. It was determined with these techniques that C. gunnari grew to 50 cm in 15 yrs and N. rossii marmorata grew to 50 cm in 6.5 yrs. The lack of larger-sized individuals for N. rossii marmorata may be indicative of recent overfishing with only the younger age groups remaining. It appears that length-at-age data determined on a yearly basis, could provide valuable scientific and management information for these species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the morphometry of otoliths for Sciades proops juveniles by testing the hypothesis of equality in morphometric relationships for the right and left otoliths, which could then be interchangeably used to estimate fish size or weight. Samples were obtained monthly directly from anglers after each event that took place off the state of Sergipe from March/2014 to April/2015. Anglers used rod and reel during these events, with no restriction on hook size or line thickness. Each fish specimen sampled had their total weight (W, g) and total length (TL, cm) measured and their lapillus otoliths removed and stored separately. Each otolith had its length (OL), width (OWi), and thickness (OT) measured (all in mm) under a stereomicroscope. Otoliths were weighed using a precision scale (OW, g). A total of 883 specimens were sampled: TL = 12.0–60.5 cm and W = 9.8–1880 g. The weight‐length relationship for the juvenile fishes was W = 0.0052TL3.086 and for their otoliths was OW = 0.0002OL3.177. The weight‐length and length‐length relationships fitted for each otolith (right and left) were not statistically different and thus all relations were estimated for grouped otoliths. The length‐length relationships for the otoliths were: OWi = 0.947OL?0.205 and OT = O.484OL?0.698. The relationship estimated for juvenile fish and otolith weight was Wj = 1076.1OW?9.120. For juvenile fish total length and otolith length, width and thickness, the following relationships were estimated: TLj = 4.028OL?3.199, TLj = 4.208OWi?2.091, and TLj = 7.824OT + 3.659, respectively. Relationships between fish and otolith size, and between fish and otolith weight indicated a change in slope close to Lm50, which should be better explored when more adult specimens are available.  相似文献

Juvenile Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) collected off the South Shetland Islands (CCAMLR Subarea 48.1) were aged by counting the presumed daily increments in the sagittal otoliths. The timing and position of the first annulus was examined for each individual fish from 10 to 13 cm TL. Under reflected light at low magnification, the otolith sections exhibited a wide opaque nucleus, with no evidence of deposition of the first translucent zone. The average measurement of ventral and dorsal radii of these sections were, respectively, 603 and 768 μm, consistently less than the measurements done in previously estimated 1 year old fish caught in the same area. All specimens aged in the present study were approximately 1 year old fish, with an age range between 365 and 431 days, suggesting a significant underestimation of age in the previous studies. The value of ageing precision indices calculated was relatively low, supporting the reliability of the reading technique applied. Two checks were easily identified in the core of all otolith sections, interpreted tentatively as hatching and first exogenous feeding checks. Back-calculating from the time of capture, the hatching period of D. mawsoni was estimated to occur throughout the summer season, from November to February. In conclusion, the delay in timing of deposition of the first translucent zone, which occurs in the second winter from hatching, should be taken into account in future studies on ageing Antarctic toothfish, as well as in the stock assessment models based on length at age data.  相似文献

Age and growth of ocellated icefish, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, were investigated using counts of annual growth increments from sagittal otoliths. Samples were collected during research surveys by benthic trawl carried out around Elephant and South Shetland Islands in January–February 2002 and December 2006–January 2007. A total of 290 specimens were selected for the study, consisting of 120 females and 170 males. The age of fish was estimated by counting annuli on transverse sections obtained by grinding and polishing whole otoliths embedded in epoxy resin. The precision-of-age estimates within and between readers were tested applying both the average percent error (APE) and the coefficient of variation (CV). The estimated age-range was 1–12 for both sexes of C. rastrospinosus. Applying the von Bertalanffy growth function to the age–length data, a growth curve was obtained for each sex. The estimated values of VB growth parameters L and k were, respectively, 47.9 cm and 0.28 for females and 42.9 cm and 0.36 for males. Compared to other congeneric species, the growth performance of C. rastrospinosus was relatively high, being 2.82 and 2.81 in males and females, respectively. Age at sexual maturity was estimated to be about 4 years in both sexes. C. rastrospinosus captured in the studied area consisted mainly of adult specimens between 3 and 8 years, with few older fish.  相似文献

Summary Sagittal otoliths from Notothenia larseni contain microincremental growth rings which are distinctly visible in otolith sections using Scanning Electron Microscopy. These microincrements are similar to those deposited daily in the otoliths of fishes from temperate and tropical waters. Microincrements were easily enumerated and fish length was related to increment number by a logarithmic curve. Otolith microstructure analysis appears to provide a technique to accurately determine age and growth rates in these fish. Sr/Ca ratios in otolith aragonite were analyzed along a radius from the outside edge to the core of an otolith section using an electron microprobe. The strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) ratios varied with a cyclic periodicity apparently related to seasonal water temperature cycles and the number of cycles agreed closely with age estimated from daily microincrement counts. Sr/ca cycles can potentially be used to determine age, validate growth rates determined by other methods, and establish thermal conditions experienced during the life of a fish. Microstructural and chemical analyses of otoliths demonstrate great potential in helping to answer many questions about the growth processes and ecology of Antarctic fishes.  相似文献

Otolith development was observed and the formation of daily growth increments in otoliths of Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, was validated by monitoring known-age larvae and juveniles in the laboratory from 2003 to 2005. Otolith shape changed with larval and juvenile development, and there was an exponential relationship until a body length of 16 mm or so, and a linear relationship after a body length of 16 mm between otolith size and fish size. The first increment was identified in larvae 1 day after hatching. The regressed equations between daily age (D) and increment number in otoliths (N) were N = −0.64 + 0.96D in lapillus, and N = −0.31 + 0.98D in sagitta. The slopes were not significantly different than 1.0. This demonstrated that otolith increments in this species were formed daily and can be used for daily age determination.  相似文献

Otoliths (sagittae) of the coral reef fish, Myripristis amaena, the brick solderfish were examined internally by Scanning Electron Microscope methods to observe microincrements. The daily nature of increment deposition was validated through tetracycline and acetazolamide marking experiments. Utilization of multivariant mathematical models relating age to otolith size and fish size demonstrated that age could be reliably determined from body measurements and otolith weight measurements. Consequently, M. amaena grows slowly, maturing at about 6 years of age, lives at least 14 years and reaches at least 215 mm SL.  相似文献

The otoliths of juveniles and adults of European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus held in aquaria were marked by immersion in oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) at concentrations between 350 and 410 mg l−1 for 12 h. Counts of microincrements between fluorescent bands validated the daily otolith increment formation. The otolith increments were easily readable at ×400 with average increment widths of c . 1·1 µm. Validation was successfully demonstrated in juveniles and adults maintained for short periods in the aquaria in the summer. For European anchovy captured as juvenile and reared to adults, however, increment formation appeared less than daily. The daily periodicity of the otoliths in juvenile European anchovy implies that counting of microincrements can be used to study their birth dates. The application of this technique to adults, however, may lead to the underestimation of actual age and further research needs to be done to clarify the reasons for the apparent loss of the daily rhythm over long periods.  相似文献

Suspected historic changes in juvenile southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii growth rates were investigated using otolith increment width data. Four hundred and ninety otoliths were selected from fish estimated to be between 1 and 41 years-old. The distance between the first five annuli were measured on the otoliths, giving estimates of otolith growth for age classes 1+ to 4+ years for fish spawned from the early 1960s to mid 1990s. The data showed that growth rates of juveniles (age 1+ and 2+ years) started to increase at around 1979–1980, and that growth continued to increase throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Lee's phenomenon was not observed in the data. Correlation tests did not reveal clear relationships between annual otolith growth and regional environmental variables such as sea surface temperature or Southern Oscillation Index. The increase in otolith growth, however, was consistent with juvenile growth estimates obtained from other sources, and correlated with large-scale trends in population size and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Chaenocephalus aceratus is one of the most abundant Antarctic icefish species in the Atlantic sector and has been a by-catch species in the fishery for mackerel icefish, Champsocephalus gunnari, between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s at South Georgia, South Orkney, and South Shetland Islands. The species became the target of the fishery in particular seasons, such as at South Georgia in 1977/78. In our paper, we report results on genetic differentiation for 11 microsatellite loci in C. aceratus samples collected at the South Shetlands and Elephant Island. This study represents the first report on microsatellite variability of an icefish species. Our results support the evidence from previous studies on differences in infestation patterns of parasites that a single panmictic population of C. aceratus exists, spanning the two sampling sites separated by about 100 km. Moreover, our study indicates the presence of a significant genetic differentiation between individual year-classes pointing out the existence of dynamic processes acting at the population genetic level, according to recent results for broadly distributed marine species. Both small effective population size and immigration from unsampled differentiated stocks may be at the base of the differentiation found in C. aceratus. The otoliths of laboratory‐reared larval and juvenile perch Perca fluviatilis of known age were analysed to determine the age of otolith formation and validate the formation of daily increments. There was a linear relationship between number of increments and age in days post‐hatching, although by 82 days post‐hatching daily increment counts underestimated actual age by an average of 5 days. Otolith dimensions in relation to standard length indicated allometric growth of otoliths until completion of yolk absorption, and isometric growth thereafter, up to 82 days post‐hatching.  相似文献

Morphological changes in otolith shape with age, of young (<age 3) red snapper were examined through shape analysis and tested as an objective method for age determination. Otoliths from two collections of juvenile fish (hatchery and wild) were used in the study. First, shape analysis was applied to a series of known-age otoliths from hatchery-reared age 0, 1 and 2 fish. Multidimensional scaling and non-parametric analysis of similarities showed significant shape differences among the three age classes of fish. Discriminant function analysis and cross-validation classification showed 65.6% correct age classification based on shape variables alone, and 86.7% correct age classification with inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function (n?=?90). Subsequently, the method was applied to otoliths from a series of age 0, 1 and 2 wild caught red snapper. Otoliths from wild fish showed a similar age classification success rate of 68.9% based on shape variables alone and 86.7% correct age classification with the inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function (n?=?90). Ageing of juvenile red snapper through otolith increment counts has been difficult in past studies and this study provides an alternative, objective method of otolith shape analysis for ageing young fish of this species.  相似文献

Otoliths, or ‘ear stones’, are calcium carbonate structures found in all vertebrates. In teleosts, they have a number of sensory functions, including hearing. Daily growth increments of these structures have permitted advanced age and population studies of teleosts. Whereas ‘normal’ otoliths are composed of crystals imbedded within a protein matrix as aragonite, a ‘crystalline’ form of calcium carbonate termed vaterite is also found. A review of the otolith literature demonstrates a significant level of understanding of the structure and function of otoliths, but the cause for crystalline otolith structure remains speculative. Pairs of otoliths from hatchery and wild juvenile and adult coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) were examined visually for determination of otolith microstructure type. The vateritic or crystalline otoliths were found in much higher percentages in juvenile hatchery-reared coho salmon than in juvenile wild coho salmon, supporting previous studies. There did not seem to be any negative impact on size or survival. There was also no correlation between crystalline otoliths and premature maturation in coho males. A preliminary study of adult coho salmon returning to Big Qualicum and Chilliwack hatcheries showed even higher ratios of vateritic otoliths than observed in juveniles.  相似文献

The sagittal otolith morphology and microchemistry of reared juvenile ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, were examined to describe the occurrence and microchemical characteristics of the abnormal otoliths in this species. Juvenile ayu (N = 31) were collected in June 2004 at three different locations, Wakayama, Kumamoto, and Biwa Lake in Japan, where they were being reared in freshwater aquaculture ponds after having been collected in the wild as larvae. Otolith abnormality was found in the sagittae of 26% (N = 8) of the individuals examined, of which five fish had abnormal otoliths only on one side, while the otolith on the other side was normal. Abnormal otoliths were more transparent and crystalline in appearance with irregular shapes compared to normal ones that were more opaque and less irregular. Abnormal otoliths were divided into two types, semi-abnormal (Type 1) with a normal part in the center, and fully-abnormal (Type 2) that were completely crystalline in appearance. The line transects and whole otolith concentration maps showed that the contents of Sr, Na and K were lower in the abnormal otolith regions compared to the normal ones, while those of Ca and S were almost constant in both. The appearance and microchemical properties of the abnormal ayu otoliths were similar to the abnormal otoliths in other species in which vaterite replaces the aragonite. Abnormal formation of otoliths occurred in ayu from Biwa Lake (30%) and Kumamoto (45%), while the Wakayama samples had no abnormality. The microchemical analyses of the normal and abnormal otoliths indicated that some abnormal otoliths had formed before the fish were captured and transferred to the hatchery, so the possible causes of otolith abnormality in ayu are discussed.  相似文献

During the early ontogeny of fishes, the timing and duration of key events such as larval hatching and the switch from endogenous to exogenous feeding largely determine the offspring viability and survival. The aim of the present study was to investigate the life history traits of the early larvae of the mackerel icefish, Champsocephalus gunnari, collected in summer south of the South Shetland Islands in the Bransfield Strait and north of Elephant Island. Through the analysis of sagittal otolith microstructure, we assessed the timing and duration of egg incubation, larval hatching, first exogenous feeding, rate of yolk resorption and body growth rate. Compared to populations living further north (i.e. around South Georgia and Kerguelen Islands), mackerel icefish in the southern Scotia Arc exhibits longer egg incubation (lasting 90–120 days from winter to summer) and delayed hatching time spread over a relatively short period lasting 26 days between January and February. The first exogenous feeding takes place between 13 and 24 days after hatching still in the presence of the yolk-sac, indicating a prolonged mixed feeding afterward. The specific growth rate or daily percentage change in size (G) was 1.9 % SL day?1, corresponding to a daily growth rate at mean size of 0.31 mm day?1. While showing significant differences in early life history traits across their geographical distribution, C. gunnari populations share a common strategy, spawning a small number of large eggs that hatch in relatively large-sized larvae, at a time which may be independent of the timing of pack-ice retreat and onset of the production cycle.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between otolith size and growth in juvenile cod (Gadus morhua L.). Two groups of juvenile cod were reared under different food ration and temperature regimes to obtain fish of similar somatic size but with different sized otoliths. The two groups were subjected to alternating temperature regimes and intermediate ration levels. Large otoliths grew significantly faster than the small ones and variation between individuals was extensive. The ratio of otolith growth during cold and warm temperature exposure did not differ between groups, and the observed growth pattern is therefore not attributable to differential growth within individual temperature periods. The ratio decreased with otolith size, presumably as a result of ontogenetic decrease in otolith protein composition. These results suggest that processes coupled to the metabolic rate of the endolymphatic epithelium are the key driver behind otolith growth.  相似文献

The microstructure of otoliths from young and old Oreochromis niloticus (L.) were studied. Otoliths were prepared histologically except for those from newly hatched fish. Hatching results in the formation of a check in the otoliths, which appeared 1 day later. Other checks are rare in juvenile otoliths but common in adult otoliths. Faint and non-daily increments were observed within the hatching check. After hatching, increments were deposited daily. Sub-daily increments were faint and narrow, they were present in the area along the dorso-ventral axis of the otolith but did not continue into the lateral region. Discontinuous zones in the medial area appeared different from those in the lateral area. New growth centres were not only found in the juvenile fish otoliths, but also in adult fish otoliths.  相似文献
