The effects of larval density on components of fertility fitness were investigated with two mutant lines of Drosophila melanogaster. The differences in adult body weight, wing length, larval survivorship and development time verified that flies reared at high density were resource limited. Experimental results indicate that: (1) relative fecundities of both sexes show density-dependent effects, (2) there is a strong density effect on male and female mating success, and (3) in general, there is a reduction in fecundity differences between genotypes at high density. These results imply that it may be important to consider fertility in models of density-dependent natural selection.  相似文献

Changes in genetic composition and in fitness of karyotypes in synthetic populations of Drosophila melanogaster carrying fourth chromosomes marked with recessive mutants in repulsion were measured as functions of initial population composition and density. There was no detectable influence of initial population density on the magnitude of chromosome frequency change or on adaptive values of karyotypes, but both measures proved sensitive to population composition. That fitness be measured zygote-to-zygote is argued to be of dubious necessity in all contexts except demonstration of frequency-dependent selection. Some prior reports cited as evidence of the operation of density-dependent selection, like the present study, contain no evidence that the rate of natural selection is influenced by population crowding. Reports that do demonstrate density-dependent selection suggest that the relationship between fitness and crowding differs from that assumed in most theoretical treatments. Further work is needed to elucidate the interaction between fitness, population crowding, and population composition.  相似文献

We have tested the hypothesis that genetic differences among conspecific populations may result in diverse responses to selection, using natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster. Selection for ethanol tolerance in a tube measuring knockdown resistance was imposed on five West Coast populations. In 24 generations the selected lines increased their mean knockdown times, on average, by a factor of 2.7. An initially weak latitudinal cline was steepened by selection. The two southernmost populations showed the same increases in the selected character, but differed consistently in their correlated responses in characters related to ethanol tolerance. This result indicates that the populations responded to selection by different genetic changes. Selection decreased female body weight and increased resistance to acetone, suggesting components of the response unrelated to ethanol metabolism. The Adhs allele was favored by selection in all populations at the onset, but increased in frequency only in the selected lines of the southernmost population. There was a correlation between latitude and Adh frequency changes, suggesting that fitnesses of the Adh alleles were dependent on the genetic background. Genetic background also had a large effect on the loss of fitness due to selection. Genetic drift between replicate lines caused more variation in selection response than initial genetic differences between populations. This result demonstrates the importance of genetic drift in divergence among natural populations undergoing uniform selection, since the effective population sizes approached those of small natural populations. Drift caused greater divergence between selected replicates than control replicates. Implications of this result for the genetic model of selection response are discussed.  相似文献

The theory of evolution predicts that the rate of adaptation of a population is a function of the amount of genetic variation present in the population. This has been experimentally demonstrated in Drosophila populations in which genetic variability was increased either by mass hybridization of two gene pools, or by X-irradiation.—Mutator genes increase the spontaneous mutation rates of their carriers. We have now studied the effects of a third-chromosome mutator gene, mt, on the rate of adaptation of laboratory populations. Initially, experimental and control populations had similar genetic constitutions except for the presence or absence of the mt gene. The populations were maintained for 20–25 generations by "serial transfer" under conditions of very intense selection.—The number of flies produced per unit time remained constant throughout the experiment in the experimental as well as in the control populations. However, in the mutator-carrying populations the average longevity of the flies (and consequently the average population size) gradually decreased. Under the experimental conditions natural selection is unable to counteract completely the increased input of deleterious mutations due to the mt gene.  相似文献

The modes of selection important in maintaining an inversion-allozyme polymorphism in two laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster were examined. The populations, 731R and J2, are highly resistant to DDT. The polymorphism involves the Standard and In(3R)P chromosomal arrangements in very strong linkage association with the AO 1 and AO4 allozymes, respectively, of the aldehyde oxidase locus—The mean fertilities of the three karyotypes were not significantly different in 731R, but, in J2, In/In was significantly inferior to St/St and St/In. Egg-to-adult viability tests indicated very strong heterozygote advantage at all frequency combinations of the karyotypes in both populations when DDT was present. When DDT was excluded, the viabilities varied over the frequency combinations but were not inversely correlated with karyotype frequency, as predicted by balancing frequency-dependent selection. Discrete, multiple-generation experiments showed a rapid increase in heterozygote frequency to about 80% in both populations when DDT was present. Without DDT, 731R showed apparent directional selection favoring St, whereas J2 showed persistence of the polymorphism, although with extensive fluctuation.—Thus, the inversion-allozyme polymorphism is directly involved in the adaptation to a specific environmental component, DDT, and the selective advantage of the heterozygotes is the important balancing force. Balancing frequency-dependent selection was not observed, which suggests the hypothesis that this form of selection may not be involved in adaptation to novel environmental conditions.  相似文献

Twenty different natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster were sampled to determine the frequencies of inversions. Based on their frequencies and geographical distributions, the inversions could be classified as follows: (1) Common cosmopolitan inversions that are present in many populations in frequencies exceeding five percent and that may exhibit frequency clines over large geographical regions; (2) Rare cosmopolitan inversions that occur throughout the species range but usually at frequencies below five percent and that may be absent in many populations; (3) Recurrent endemic inversions that are found in several adjacent populations in frequencies usually not exceeding one or two percent; and (4) Unique endemic inversions that are found only among the progeny of a single individual and that may represent one aspect of the syndrome termed "hybrid dysgenesis". Four common cosmopolitan inversions that exhibit highly significant clines in populations in the eastern United States are In(2L)t, In(2R)NS, In(3L)P and In(3R)P.  相似文献

Two types of small-scale selection experiments were performed. (1) Artificial selection experiments were performed on age-specific female fecundity. Selection for early fecundity over three generations produced a statistically detectable direct response. There was no detectable indirect response in other life-history characters. Selection for late fecundity over three generations did not produce any detectable direct response. Indirect responses were detected: early egg-laying decreased and longevity increased. (2) Natural selection for late-age fitness components increased late fecundity, female longevity, and the duration of female reproduction, while early fecundity and mean egg-laying rate decreased.  相似文献

The allozyme polymorphism at the alcohol dehydrogenase locus in Drosophila melanogaster was studied in order to obtain experimental evidence about the maintenance of this polymorphism. Populations started with different initial allele frequencies from homozygous F and S lines showed a convergence of frequencies on regular food at 25 degrees, leading to values equal to those in the base populations. These results were interpreted as due to some kind of balancing selection. In populations kept at 29.8 degrees, a lower equilibrium F frequency was attained. Addition of ethanol and some other alcohols to the food gave a rapid increase in F frequency, and high humidity decreased the F frequency slightly. Combination or alternation of ethanol and high humidity had variable effects in the populations tested. For a further analysis of the allele-frequency changes, estimates were obtained for egg-to-adult survival under different conditions and for adult survival on ethanol-supplemented food. On ethanol food (both at regular and high humidity), egg-to-adult survival of SS homozygotes was considerably lower than that of the FF and FS genotypes. Under regular conditions of food, temperature and humidity, a tendency to heterozygote superiority was observed, while at high humidity a relative high survival of SS was noticed in some tests. Adult survival of SS was lower than that of FF, but FS was generally intermediate, though the degree of dominance differed between populations. The results are consistent with the hypothesis of the occurrence of selection at the Adh locus.  相似文献

Fifty lethal-free, sterility-free isogenic lines of Drosophila melanogaster that were randomly sampled from a natural population were tested for net fitness and other components of fitness by competition with D. hydei. Larval viability and developmental time were also measured using the balanced marker method. Distribution patterns of these fitness components were similar, but correlation between the fitness components varied depending on the combinations used. The highest correlations were obtained between net fitness and productivity (rp = 0.6987, rg = 0.9269). The correlation between net fitness and total larval viability was much lower (rp = 0.1473 and rg = 0.2171). These results indicate that measuring net fitness, not just a component of fitness, is necessary for the good understanding of the genetic structures of natural populations.  相似文献

Artificial selection for short wing was performed in two Drosophila melanogaster populations with partially different gene pools: the C populations were derived from a Canton stock while the H lines were derived from a cross between Canton and a b, cn, vg strain. It is shown that in both populations selection on females (CF, HF) was more effective than selection on males (CM, HM). This difference cannot be explained in terms of differences in additive genetic variability between the two sexes because: (1) both sexes contribute to the genetic variability utilized by selection applied to one sex only, and (2) switching selection pressure on females in the M lines does not result in a response comparable to that obtained in the F populations; this rules out almost completely recombination as the responsible agent for the differences between the selection limits reached by M and F selections.-These results, together with several additional observations concerning sexual dimorphism, fitness and the effect of natural selection, suggest that a complex interaction should be involved in the differential response of M and F lines, controlling the wing length phenotype.  相似文献

Results are presented of further analyses of the significant effects of reciprocal crosses reported by Katz and Cardellino (1978) in regard to viability indices of wild-type second chromosome heterozygotes. The observed differences between reciprocal crosses can be explained by the existence of reduced transmission frequencies of the wild-type homologue from Pm/+ and Cy/+ paternal parents. Mean estimates of transmission frequencies from Pm/+ and Cy/+ males in California and Japan populations are significantly less than the Mendelian expectation of 1/2. The transmission frequencies of +(i) chromosomes from Pm/+(i) and Cy/+(i) males are also found to be positively correlated in the California and pooled populations, suggesting that the degree of distortion is primarily due to the +(i) chromosome rather than to Cy or Pm. A sufficient estimator of relative viability that is independent of distorted transmission frequencies is derived for use in the Cy/Pm technique of viability estimation.  相似文献

Two large, stable populations (Texas and Japan) of Drosophila melanogaster were surveyed at 21 allozyme loci on the second and third chromosomes and for chromosomal gene arrangements on those two chromosomes. Over 220 independent gametes were sampled from each population. The types and frequencies of the surveyed genetic variation are similar to those observed previously and suggest only slight differentiation among geographically distant populations. Linkage disequilibrium among linked allozymes loci is only slightly, if at all, detectable with these sample sizes. Linkage disequilibrium between linked inversions and allozymes loci is common especially when located in the same arm. These disequilibria appear to be in the same direction for most comparisons in the two population samples. This result is interpreted as evidence of similar selective environments (ecological and genetic) in the two populations. It is also noted that the direction of these linkage disequilibria appears to be oriented with respect to the gene frequencies at the component loci.  相似文献

Selection of Gl-Sb coupling heterozygotes was carried out for more than one hundred generations commencing with six independent lines drawn from a common base population. Population sizes were eight, sixteen and forty-eight parents per generation. The effect of natural selection on recombination value was measured by sampling and testing females at varying intervals of time. There was a significant reduction in percentage recombination between Gl and Sb from fifteen to a level between five and ten in four out of six of the original lines. In most cases this reduction occurred rather rapidly after the initiation of the experiment. In the remaining two lines there was no significant decrease in recombination value; there was, however, a significant increase in at least one subline of this group. The rapid rate of change of recombination value is most readily explained by the presence of a recombination modifying gene which is linked to the modified region. Genetic random drift was again shown to have an important effect on changes in recombination value in small populations. High recombination was almost completely recessive to low recombination in the one case examined. Lethal genes were fixed in sheltered regions of unmarked third chromosomes in five lines or sublines. These results are discussed in relation to the mode of development of permanent heterozygosity in some species of plants.  相似文献
