Application and comparison of sex discriminant functions in different populations led to the conclusion that a certain combination and weighting of a few sex dimorphism variables (in this study we only used craniometric variables) can give a good discrimination between male and female individuals, independent of the racial group to which this function is applied. In our study, the sex-discriminatory power of five discriminant functions which were based on different ordination and selection procedures (e.g. professional knowledge, stepwise discriminant analysis, literature) of the cranial variables is compared. These discriminant functions were applied to three different data sets, the first being skull measurements from an Amsterdam series (Europids), the second skull measurements of a Zulu series (Negrids) and the third skull measurements of a Japan series (Mongolids). Our decision as to whether a function is a good or less good sex-discriminating function is determined by the Dt values (these values give an idea about the discriminatory value of the discriminant function when applied to a new test sample), the number of variables necessary to obtain this Dt and the location of the sectioning point (i.e. comparison between the estimation of the sectioning point and the ”real” sectioning point). These discriminant functions were compared withGiles Elliot's (1962, 1963) “race-independent” sex function.  相似文献

Facial width-to-height ratio (FWHR), defined as the width of the face divided by the upper facial height, is a cue to behaviour. Explanations for this link often involve the idea that FWHR is sexually dimorphic, resulting from intersexual selection pressures. However, few studies have considered sexual dimorphism in skulls since the original paper on this topic, and it is possible that different explanations may be required if faces show sex differences but skulls do not. Here, meta-analyses of skulls found that men did have larger FWHR than women, although this effect was small. However, after categorising samples by ethnicity and geographical origin, meta-analyses only found evidence of sex differences in East Asians, and again, this effect was small. A re-analysis of previous studies after excluding skull samples found little evidence of sexual dimorphism in faces. Again, considering ethnicities separately, I found no differences for White samples but a medium-sized effect with East Asians, although this was not statistically significant with only three samples. Taken together, I found no reason to consider FWHR as a sexually dimorphic measure in skulls or faces, at least not universally, and so accounts based upon this assumption need rethinking if researchers are to explain the relationship between FWHR and behaviour.  相似文献

The prevalences of three helminths, Campula oblonga, Halocercus dalli and Crassicauda sp., recovered from Dall's porpoises which were net-entrapped incidentally in the vicinity of the Western Aleutian Islands in the northwest Pacific are reported. Specimens of Campula oblonga were found within the bile ducts of 46% of 127 livers examined. The prevalence of hepatic trematodiasis increased with the age of the host. Pulmonary nodules associated with Halocercus dalli were noted in 71% of the Dall's porpoises. Adult H. dalli were recovered from the main stem bronchi of heavily infected lungs. Younger animals exhibited a relatively higher prevalence. Specimens of Crassicauda sp. were found within the main lactiferous canal of 69% of 29 mammary glands examined. The prevalence was highest in mature porpoises. Possible detrimental effects and the modes of transmission of the three species of parasites are also considered.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in craniodental features is investigated in a sample of 45 carnivore species in relation to allometry, phylogeny, and behavioural ecology. Dimorphism is more pronounced in both upper and lower canine size and strength than in carnassial size, skull dimensions and biomechanical features, but all dimorphism indices covary. As with most morphological characters, differences in canine sexual dimorphism are significantly related to phylogeny, estimated from either taxonomic rankings or a limited matrix of molecular distances; in particular, mustelids, felids and procyonids are more dimorphic than other carnivore families. Thus, because of problems related to species dependence in comparative data, remaining analyses are based on phylogenetically transformed values using a spatial autoregressive method.
In contrast to other mammals, sexual dimorphism in carnivore canines is not correlated with differences in body weight, skull length or basicranial axis length. Nor is it correlated with categorical variables of activity pattern, habitat, or diet. In our Carnivore sample, canine dimorphism is related only to breeding system: uni-male, group-living (harem) species have significantly greater canine dimorphism than multi-male, multi-female groups and monogamous pair-bonding species. By contrast, dimorphism in carnassial size is related to dietary differences, specifically greater dimorphism in meat-eating species, and not breeding patterns. Dimorphism in estimates of jaw muscle size suggest functional demands from both diet and breeding type. It is concluded that, befitting patterns of heterodont dentition, sexual selection influences variation in canine dimorphism while feeding ecology is related to carnassial dimorphism.  相似文献

A case of systemic mycosis due to a Rhizopus sp. infection is described in a dead-stranded, 10-yr-old, male harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the beach of Neustadt, Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea (Germany). At necropsy, granulomatous mycotic lesions in brain, lung, kidneys, testis, and draining lymph nodes were found. In addition, a focal ulcerative gastritis of the first stomach, due to a nematode infection, was present and is suspected to be the portal of entry for the fungus.  相似文献

One of the more important sources of variability in primate species is sexual dimorphism. Most Primates heavier than five kilos bodyweight are sexually dimorphic, both in body size and in shape of certain hard tissues. Despite these facts, most of the fossil Primates from East African Miocene deposits were originally perceived as being monomorphic, a perception which has propogated through the literature. Re-examination ofProconsul from various sites in Western Kenya results in the view that it was as dimorphic in its splanchonocranium and in bodyweight as chimpanzees and gorillas. The clearest evidence comes from Rusing Island, where adequate samples are known of two morphs, traditionally identified as two species, but more likely to represent two sexes of a single species,P. nyanzae. Co-occurrence of the two morphs is 100% at the various Rusinga sites. Less complete samples have been collected from the Tinderet sites os Koru and Songhor, yet what is available shows that similar patterns of dimorphism characterise the speciesP. africanus andP. major, and that the co-occurrence of the two morphs in each species is 100%. The identification of fossils taking into consideration the role of sexual dimorphism clarifies many of the old debates in which individual specimens frequently shifted between different species, mainly on the basis of metric rather than morphologic evidence. Consequently, the distribution of the species ofProconsul is rather different after accounting for dimorphism, than it was before.  相似文献

A collection of skulls ofPan troglodytes verus from Liberia was analysed according to specific characters of morphology and sexual dimorphism based on osteological data. Morphologic characters of both sexes are described somewhat in detail. Measurements were taken. Morphometric data show a high range of intraspecific variability within our collection. It shows that the mean metric divergence between both sexes is rather slight, skulls of males in our sample are on the average 3.7% larger than those of females.  相似文献

Variation in guenon skulls (II): sexual dimorphism   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Patterns of size and shape sexual dimorphism in adult guenons were examined using a large sample of skulls from almost all living species. Within species, sexual dimorphism in skull shape follows the direction of size-related shape variation of adults, is proportional to differences in size, and tends to be larger in large-bodied species. Interspecific divergence among shape trajectories, which explain within species sex differences, are small (i.e., trajectories of most species are nearly parallel). Thus, changes in relative proportions of skull regions that account for the distinctive shape of females and males are relatively conserved across species, and their magnitude largely depends on differences in size between sexes. A conservative pattern of size-related sexual dimorphism and a model of interspecific divergence in shape which strongly reflects size differences suggest a major role of size and size-related shape variation in the guenon radiation. It is possible that in the guenons, as in the neotropical primates (with whom they have obvious parallels), size has helped to determine morphological change along lines of least evolutionary resistance, influencing sexual dimorphism. In Miopithecus and Erythrocebus, the smallest and largest guenon genera, it is likely that the interaction of ecology and size contributes significantly to patterns of sexual dimorphism. The results of this study thus emphasise the need to consider allometry and size alongside ecology and behaviour when examining primate sexual dimorphism.  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism in anurans   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the direction and extent of sexual size dimorphism in anurans (in which males are usually smaller than females) as a result of sexual selection. Here, we present an analysis to test the hypothesis that sexual dimorphism in anurans is largely a function of differences between the sexes in life-history strategies. Morphological and demographic data for anurans were collected from the literature, and the mean size and age in each sex were calculated for 51 populations, across 30 species and eight genera. Comparisons across 14 Rana species, eight Bufo species and across the genera showed a highly significant relationship between size dimorphism, measured using the female-male size ratio, and mean female-male age difference. A comparison of a subset of 17 of these species for which phylogenetic information was available, using the method of independent contrasts, yielded a similar result. These results indicate that most of the variation in size dimorphism in the anura can be explained in terms of differences in the age structure between the sexes in breeding populations. If sexual selection has an effect on size dimorphism in anurans, it is likely to be only a secondary one.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in primate teeth   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A new measure of sexual dimorphism in tooth size (Relative Male Tooth Size) is estimated for a sample of 39 primate species and is used to test predictions concerning the adaptive significance of sexual dimorphism in primate tooth size. It is concluded that both sexual selection and predator defence are important selective forces producing marked sexual dimorphism in the teeth used for fighting.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in immune defense   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
ABSTRACT Sex differences in parasitism are common and may depend on sex differences in intensity of sexual competition, immunosuppression, or exposure to parasites. We used a large data set on the mass of two immune defense organs in birds (the bursa of Fabricius and the spleen) to test for consistent sex differences in immune defense. Males had a relative spleen mass that was consistently smaller, but more variable, than that of females across species of birds. A sex difference in the size of the spleen was not present among juveniles but was large and statistically significant among adults. The suppression of spleen mass in adult males increased with a measure of intensity of sexual selection: the frequency of extra-pair paternity. These findings suggest that sexdifferences in parasitism may arise as a consequence of sex differences in immune function, as mediated by sexual selection.  相似文献

Thirty-six harbor porpoises, Phocaena phocaena, were caught off the coast of Southern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as part of a study of the biology and ecology of these animals. The formalin-preserved heart was examined first in situ, then measured and studied in detail. If the weight of the thick layer of blubber is discounted, the heart is heavy relative to the total body weight as may be expected in an animal capable of fast swimming, great agility and frequent emergence from the water to breathe. The shape of the heart, the relative size of atria and atrial appendages, the morphology of the ventricular septum, the thickness of the walls of the sinus and conus of the right ventricle and the anatomy of the pulmonary veins were found to be constant for this animal and unlike that of non-cetaceans. It is suggested that the absence of respiratory movements during diving may lead to these modifications of cardiac structure in an animal that is particularly well adapted to a totally aquatic existence.  相似文献

Current male/female differences in tooth size are due to the male/female differences in body bulk that exist in any given human population. These differences are residues of the sexual dimorphism that was maintained for adaptive reasons during the Middle Pleistocene. Late in the Pleistocene the development of food processing techniques led to the reduction of both male and female dental dimensions. Dental sexual dimorphism, however, was maintained until the very end of the Pleistocene when the hunting of large game animals by crude techniques was replaced by a focus on great numbers of small game caught by more sophisticated means and by an increasing utilization of plant foods. The subsequent reduction in dimorphism represents the actions of the Probable Mutation Effect operating under conditions of relaxed selection. The conclusion offered is that the smallest degree of sexual dimorphism visible in the modern world is to be found among those populations that are separated by the greatest interval of time from precursors who depended for their survival on a Pleistocene big game hunting mode of subsistence.  相似文献
