Long-term studies have revealed population declines in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. In birds, and particularly amphibians, these declines are a global phenomenon whose causes are often unclear. Among reptiles, snakes are top predators and therefore a decline in their numbers may have serious consequences for the functioning of many ecosystems. Our results show that, of 17 snake populations (eight species) from the UK, France, Italy, Nigeria and Australia, 11 have declined sharply over the same relatively short period of time with five remaining stable and one showing signs of a marginal increase. Although the causes of these declines are currently unknown, we suspect that they are multi-faceted (such as habitat quality deterioration, prey availability), and with a common cause, e.g. global climate change, at their root.  相似文献

In 2008, the centennial of the discovery of Toxoplasma gondii was celebrated. However, toxoplasmosis is still seen as a neglected and underreported disease, despite having a disease burden similar to that of salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis. Human vaccines are not available and current antiparasitic treatment is disappointing. This has led to an urge to focus more on prevention. Food, soil or water contaminated with oocysts from cat faeces and undercooked meat from infected intermediate hosts are important routes of infection. Oocyst contamination is difficult to control, whereas in Western countries, the control of T. gondii in meat should be feasible. Here, we discuss strategies aimed at developing a Toxoplasma-safe meat chain.  相似文献

Harvest of Brazil nuts from the large, iconic tree Bertholletia excelsa generates substantial income for smallholders, providing a strong incentive to conserve the mature forests where it grows. Although much previous work has focused on the impact of nut harvest on new seedling recruits into B. excelsa populations, the connection between harvest rates and long‐term population stability is still unclear. Moreover, there is additional uncertainty for Brazil nut management in terms of population response to climate change and other anthropogenic influences. We drew on 14 years of research in two sites in Acre, Brazil with different B. excelsa nut harvest intensities (39% and 81%), to produce stochastic and deterministic matrix population models which incorporated parameter uncertainty in vital rates. Adult abundance was projected to remain close to the current observed abundance or higher through the next 50 years. Elasticity analyses revealed that the asymptotic population growth rate (λ) was most sensitive to stasis vital rates in sapling, juvenile, and adult stages. Deterministic transition matrices calculated using diameter growth rates dependent on rainfall yielded average λ values around 1.0 under extreme high, extreme low, and average annual rainfall. While sustained high rates of Brazil nut harvest and climate change could potentially negatively impact B. excelsa populations, changes in human use of the forested landscape are more immediate concern. To reduce the risk of population decline, smallholders and managers of B. excelsa rich forests should focus on conservation of pre‐mature and mature individuals.  相似文献

The African bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), and the cotton red spider mite, Tetranychus spp., are important pests of cotton in Zimbabwe. A study to assess H. armigera resistance to fenvalerate 20 EC (Cyano (3-phenoxyphenyl) methyl 4-chloro-α-(1-methylethyl)benzene acetate) and Tetranychus spp. resistance to amitraz 20 EC (n’-(2,4-dimethylphenyl)-n-[[(2,4-dimethylphenyl)imino]methyl]-n-) was conducted at the Cotton Research Institute (CRI) during the 2005/06 cotton-growing season. Field populations of H. armigera and Tetranychus spp. were collected from some of Zimbabwe’s major cotton-growing areas of Sanyati, Umguza, Chisumbanje, Chinhoyi and the CRI in Kadoma and exposed to bioassays. The African bollworm leaf disc technique and the red spider mite attached leaf-dipping technique were used to assess responses of the African bollworm and red spider mite to the pesticides. Susceptible laboratory populations served as the standard populations and their responses were compared with those of the field populations. The graphical method and MSTAT-C probit analysis computer program were used to calculate LC50 values. Although the CRI field population, used as a reference population for the registration of H. armigera insecticides, had the highest LC50 value (graphical?=?0.000100000; MSTAT-C?=?0.000088195) compared with all the other field populations, overall log-dose probit bioassays on all field-collected strains of the bollworm showed no resistance to the pyrethroid (RFs?=?0.04–0.54-fold). Tetranychus spp. showed very low levels of resistance (RFs?=?1.26–2.00-fold). Continuous monitoring of major cotton pests, especially H. armigera and Tetranychus spp., from all cotton districts of Zimbabwe is vital for early detection of resistance development.  相似文献

A molecular analysis examining the level of relatedness in shoaling minnows Phoxinus phoxinus was conducted. The results revealed that individuals from within the same shoal were not more closely related to each other than to individuals from other shoals. Abstract. Past explanations of the large disjunctions in the distribution of New Zealand's four Nothofagus species have emphasized displacement during glacial cycles followed by slow re-occupation of suitable sites, or the effects of plate tectonics coupled with ecological and/or environmental limitations to further spread. In this study the degree of equilibrium between Nothofagus distribution and environment was compared with that of other widespread tree species by statistical analysis. Generalized additive regression models were used to relate species distribution data to estimates of temperature, solar radiation, soil water deficit, atmospheric humidity, lithology and drainage. For each species, the amount of spatial patterning remaining unexplained by environment was assessed by adding a variable describing species presence/absence on adjacent plots. Results indicate that Nothofagus species occur more frequently in environments suboptimal for tree growth, i.e. having various combinations of cool temperatures, low winter solar radiation, high root-zone water deficit, low humidity, and infertile granitic substrates. Despite these demonstrated preferences, they exhibit substantially more spatial clustering which is unexplained by environment, than most other widespread tree species. Predictions formed from regressions using environment alone confirm that several major Nothofagus disjunctions are not explicable in terms of the environmental factors used in this analysis, but more likely reflect the effects of historic displacement coupled with slowness to invade forest dominated by more rapidly dispersing endomycorrhizal species. The technique used in this study for detecting residual spatial autocorrelation after fitting explanatory variables has potentially wide application in other studies where either regression or ordination techniques are used for analysis of compositional data.  相似文献

Hymenopteran parasitoids generally reproduce by arrhenotoky, in which males develop from unfertilized eggs and females from fertilized eggs. A minority reproduce by thelytoky, in which all-female broods are derived from unfertilized eggs. Thelytokous populations are potentially of interest for augmentative biological control programs since the exclusive production of females could significantly lower the costs of mass rearing. Behavioral traits are a major component of parasitoid efficacy. Here, we examined orientation and host searching behavior in thelytokous and arrhenotokous populations of the fruit fly parasitoid Odontosema anastrephae Borgmeier (Hymenoptera: Figitidae). Orientation behavior to various odorant sources was studied in a two-choice olfactometer. No major differences were found between thelytokous and arrhenotokous wasps for this behavior. However, when host-searching behaviors were analyzed, some differences were found. Thelytokous females arrived sooner, foraged longer, and remained longer on non-infested guavas than arrhenotokous females. Individuals of both forms exhibited similar stereotyped behavioral sequences vis-à-vis guava treatments, with only slight deviations detected. Our results suggest that individuals from selected thelytokous and arrhenotokous O. anastrephae populations have similar abilities to search for tephritid larvae, supporting the use of thelytokous strains for augmentative releases.  相似文献

Comparisons between putatively neutral genetic differentiation amongst populations, FST, and quantitative genetic variation, QST, are increasingly being used to test for natural selection. However, we find that approximately half of the comparisons that use only data from wild populations confound phenotypic and genetic variation. We urge the use of a clear distinction between narrow‐sense QST, which can be meaningfully compared with FST, and phenotypic divergence measured between populations, PST, which is inadequate for comparisons in the wild. We also point out that an unbiased estimate of QST can be found using the so‐called ‘animal model’ of quantitative genetics.  相似文献

I am writing in response to an article by Bolton, Rollins and Griffith (2015) entitled ‘The danger within: the role of genetic, behavioural and ecological factors in population persistence of colour polymorphic species’ that was recently published as an Opinion under the NEWS AND VIEWS section in Molecular Ecology. Bolton et al. (Molecular Ecology, 2015, 24 , 2907) argue that colour polymorphism may reduce population fitness and increase extinction risk and emphasize that this is contrary to predictions put forward by Forsman et al. (Ecology, 89 , 2008, 34) and Wennersten & Forsman (Biological Reviews 87 , 2012, 756) that the existence of multiple colour morphs with co‐adapted gene complexes and associated trait values may increase the ecological and evolutionary success of polymorphic populations and species. Bolton et al. (Molecular Ecology, 2015, 24 , 2907) further state that there is no clear evidence from studies of ‘true polymorphic species’ that polymorphism promotes population persistence. In response, I (i) challenge their classifications of polymorphisms and revisit the traditional definitions recognizing the dynamic nature of polymorphisms, (ii) review empirical studies that have examined whether and how polymorphism is associated with extinction risk, (iii) discuss the roles of trait correlations between colour pattern and other phenotypic dimensions for population fitness and (iv) highlight that the causes and mechanisms that influence the composition and maintenance of polymorphisms are different from the consequences of the polymorphic condition and how it may impact on aspects of ecological success and long‐term persistence of populations and species.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the thermoregulatory responses, acid-basic and electrolytic equilibrium of locally adapted goats under natural heat conditions in a semi-arid region. Ten (10) Canindé goats aged between 2 and 3 years, non-lactating, non-pregnant and having a body weight (BW) of 22.90 ± 2.70 kg were used in this study. Air temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) were measured, and the radiant heat load (RHL) was subsequently calculated. Rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), sweating rate (SR) and heat shock (S) were recorded at 1-h intervals for 24 continuous hours. Hydrogen potential (pH), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), partial pressure of oxygen (PO2), bicarbonate (HCO3), base excess (BE), total carbon dioxide concentration (TCO2), oxygen saturation (SO2), sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) were recorded at three moments during the day (5 a.m.; 1 p.m.; 6 p.m.). There were also significant differences between the means of hours of the day for AT and RH. RR was the thermoregulatory response which most closely followed RHL, with important elevations in the periods between 10 a.m. to noon. It was observed that the goats activated their SR mechanism before RR, more precisely between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The acid-base and electrolytic equilibrium for the goats which showed great association with the first components contributed the most to the total variation of the data. The most important variables in the adaptive profile of these animals in order of importance were: SO2, PO2, RR, RT, SR, HCO3, BE, TCO2 and pH. An association between all variables grouped in each period was observed, where the thermoregulatory responses in the periods of 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. were closer than when compared to 1 p.m., showing a physiological return to the initial state. Therefore, the variation in thermoregulatory responses, acid-base and electrolytic equilibrium indicated that the goats have the ability to recover after a challenging environmental condition.  相似文献

Ectoparasites have often been shown to have detrimental effects on their host. Not much is known, however, about determinants of infestation, e.g. the question of which factors affect distribution and occurrence of parasites on different host species (degree of host specificity) and their infestation rates. In this study we examine possible effects of host determinants on parasite intensity of Carnus hemapterus (Carnidae), an ectoparasitic fly on nestling birds, in the European bee-eater (Merops apiaster), which is a common host of C. hemapterus. Our results show that European bee-eaters seem to be one of the most heavily infested host species of C. hemapterus. We found that brood size, nestling age, and colony size are the most important determinants of infestation by C. hemapterus. This parasite seems to prefer medium-sized bee-eater chicks and to select them according to their condition. Our results further suggest a negative effect of C. hemapterus on chick development.  相似文献

A number of methods commonly used in landscape genetics use an analogy to electrical resistance on a network to describe and fit barriers to movement across the landscape using genetic distance data. These are motivated by a mathematical equivalence between electrical resistance between two nodes of a network and the ‘commute time’, which is the mean time for a random walk on that network to leave one node, visit the other, and return. However, genetic data are more accurately modelled by a different quantity, the coalescence time. Here, we describe the differences between resistance distance and coalescence time, and explore the consequences for inference. We implemented a Bayesian method to infer effective movement rates and population sizes under both these models, and found that inference using commute times could produce misleading results in the presence of biased gene flow. We then used forwards‐time simulation with continuous geography to demonstrate that coalescence‐based inference remains more accurate than resistance‐based methods on realistic data, but difficulties highlight the need for methods that explicitly model continuous, heterogeneous geography.  相似文献

Hormesis is the phenomenon by which adaptive responses to low doses of otherwise harmful conditions improve the functional ability of organisms. Some mild stresses have beneficial effects on longevity, aging and resistance to strong stresses (heat or cold shocks, infection) in Drosophila flies. Studies on rodents are indeed scarce but mild stress seems to be effective in humans because, for instance, patients suffering from angina have a higher survival when confronted with a heart attack. A few studies, in less tragic situations however, suggest that mild stress could have positive effects in elderly people. Performing more experiments on the effects of mild stress in humans would help to know whether it could be used in therapy or to improve healthspan of elderly.  相似文献
