This study reports the gender and seasonal specificity of hormonal, behavioral, and coloration responses displayed by "resident" male lizards (Sceloporus undulatus) exposed to male or female "intruders" during staged encounters in outdoor enclosures. Resident males were engaged in staged encounters with males or females for 1 h per day on 9 consecutive days during the breeding and postbreeding seasons. Male-specific responses occurred during the breeding but not the postbreeding season. These included (1) a transient increase in plasma testosterone (T) that was evident on Day 4 and had subsided by Day 10, (2) behavioral displays of aggression (full shows and chases), and (3) a lightening of dorsal integumental color. Female-specific behavioral responses (nod sets) were displayed in both seasons. Season-specific responses consisted only of a transient increase in plasma corticosterone (B) during the breeding season that was evident on Day 4 and had subsided by Day 10. Pushups were displayed in response to both genders during both seasons, although the frequency of pushups was significantly higher in response to females than to males during the postbreeding season. The coloration of residents did not change in response to male intruders during the postbreeding season or to females during either season. These results define the gender and seasonal specificity of hormonal, behavioral, and coloration responses of resident male S. undulatus in social interactions with conspecifics. Thus, our results clarify the biological significance of these responses in terms of potentially aggressive versus courtship interactions and breeding versus postbreeding contexts.

We investigated in the present study the neuroendocrine correlates in intruder and resident rats of a social confrontation. Adult male Wistar rats (intruders) were introduced into the home cage of a well-trained resident to induce characteristic agonistic interactions including physical attacks prior to separation by a wire mesh. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity and the intrahypothalamic release of arginine vasopressin (AVP) were monitored via chronically implanted jugular venous catheters and microdialysis probes aimed at the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), respectively. Based on the behavioral data collected during the 30-min confrontation, intruders and residents were additionally classified into two different subgroups: intruders which showed almost no freezing behavior (active copers) versus those showing pronounced freezing behavior (passive copers) and residents which were either predominantly aggressive or non-aggressive. The neuroendocrine data show that social confrontation caused a significantly increased secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) into plasma in both intruder subgroups, independently of their coping strategy. In contrast, plasma ACTH in residents was increased in response to social confrontation in non-aggressive animals only, whereas aggressive residents failed to mount an ACTH response. Interestingly, plasma AVP decreased in response to social confrontation in active intruders. As measured in microdialysates, the two groups of residents and passive intruders failed to show significant changes of intra-PVN release of AVP. In contrast, an increased release of this neuropeptide within the PVN could be monitored for active intruders. The data of the present study suggest that the different interpretation of an aversive encounter results in differences in the neuroendocrine response and intrahypothalamic vasopressinergic signaling in intruders versus residents.

The hooded crow Corvus cornix is a west Palaearctic, solitary nesting, monogamous corvid. In the breeding season, populations are characterized by a social organization wherein breeding pairs are territorial and non-breeding individuals, called floaters, live in flocks. During a study of the breeding ecology of the hooded crow, conducted in a protected flooded area, we monitored nests with video cameras. We recorded two separate incidents when intruders attacked a female at the nest. We believe that she remained in the nest in order to prevent the strangers cannibalizing the nestlings by mantling over the brood. The spatio-temporal occurrence of these attacks suggests that the observed behaviour is intraspecific sexual aggression wherein non-breeding males mounted an immobilized female.

The Cape mole rat Georychus capensis is a solitary mole rat that inhabits the winter rainfall region of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Circulating basal concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) were found to be significantly higher in the breeding season in both sexes. During both the breeding and non-breeding season, administration of exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) increased circulatory LH levels. The magnitude of the LH response to an overdose of exogenous GnRH both in and out of the breeding season in males and females was not significantly different. Typically, seasonally breeding species exhibit a down-regulation of the pituitary and reproductive functions out of the breeding season. It appears that there is no down-regulation of GnRH receptors at the level of the pituitary out of the breeding season, because the pituitary responds to an exogenous GnRH challenge equally both in and out of the breeding period. The Cape mole rat exhibits the potential for opportunistic breeding out of the breeding period, provided that environmental factors are favourable. This finding questions whether this mole rat is actually a seasonal breeder or whether reproduction is hindered by the ecological constraint of the lack of opportunities to burrow and find mates at certain times of the year.

Inter-male competition for resources is usually studied during species’ reproductive seasons because fighting is common and conspicuous, but how this competition compares with that during the non-reproductive season is rarely investigated. Here, we compared competition for burrows between the reproductive and non-reproductive seasons in a mud crab. We conducted two natural and three experimental observations: Under natural conditions, we observed fights between residents and intruders in (1) reproductive and (2) non-reproductive seasons, and found similar results in both seasons; two factors, body size difference and residency, contributed equally to fight outcomes; (3) During the reproductive season we created an intruder by capturing a resident male and placing him in the burrow of another resident to induce a fight; (4) We repeated this but first placed a female in the burrow before introducing the intruder; findings for both experiments were similar to those for natural fights; (5) During the non-reproductive season, we repeated the third experiment and found a different result: fight outcome was determined by the difference in body size, not residency. This is the first study to show that differing subjective value of a resource between the reproductive and non-reproductive seasons affects fight outcomes.

Summary During five days prior to the introduction of potential intruder larvae, residents were treated in four different ways. In one treatment the residents were unfed and their nets were taken away at daily intervals. Nets were not taken away in the other treatments, and residents were unfed, fed 2 or 4 items per day, respectively. Small intruders were equally successful as large ones in taking over low energy demanding nets of unfed, disturbed residents whose nets were taken away daily. Take overs of high ranked nets of larvae fed four prey items per day were mainly performed by large intruders. Low investment nets of unfed, disturbed resident larvae were often taken over during the first day upon the implantation of intruder larvae. On the contrary, unfed undisturbed larvae defending a five times as energy demanding net only suffered a slight net loss. Nets of unfed, undisturbed larvae were taken over somewhat more often than those from residents fed two prey per day. The results indicate prior treatment to inform these three resident categories of their resource values. Owners of high ranked nets fed two prey per day were most keen on defence during the first day upon introduction of potential intruders. Residents fed four prey per day suffered from a significantly higher number of take overs during the first day compared with larvae only fed two prey per day. The residents fed four prey per day stored some of the food in their nets making this resource more valuable also to intruders. After five days the number of take overs was about the same irrespective of previous treatment.

One potential stressor to vertebrates both in the wild and in captivity is the presence of numerous individuals in a confined space. To examine the effects of increased conspecific density in birds, we simultaneously measured cardiac, behavioral, and endocrine responses of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to acute crowding. A cage containing a resident bird was outfitted with a trap door that allowed for the introduction of intruder birds (one, three, or five birds) without human interference. The resident bird was implanted with a subcutaneous heart rate (HR) transmitter, behavior was videotaped through a two-way mirror, and blood samples were taken at the end of each treatment to determine plasma corticosterone (CORT) concentrations. Resident starlings significantly increased both general activity and aggressive behaviors while decreasing preening following the initiation of elevated conspecific density. Intruder starlings increased feeding, drinking, and aggressive pecking rates, but postintrusion feeding rates decreased as intruder number increased. Preening decreased in both residents and intruders following the intrusion. HR increased in the resident starlings at the time of intruder introduction, with an increase in the magnitude of this response directly correlating with increasing intruder number. The CORT response to increased density was dependent on social role (resident or intruder), since increasing density did not alter CORT levels in resident birds, but resulted in elevated CORT 30 min following the five-intruder introduction in the intruder birds. Together, these data suggest that increased conspecific density is a significant acute stressor in starlings which is capable of inducing aggression in both residents and intruders. Furthermore, it elicits different responses from different physiological and behavioral systems, and behavioral responses such as feeding and general activity may be density-dependent. The data specifically illustrate that cardiac and behavioral activation can be independent of CORT release, and the CORT response of starlings to increased conspecific density is dependent on social role and degree of the increase in density.

In many territorial species androgen hormones are known to increase in response to territorial intrusions as a way to adjust the expression of androgen-dependent behaviour to social challenges. The dear enemy effect has also been described in territorial species and posits that resident individuals show a more aggressive response to intrusions by strangers than by other territorial neighbours. Therefore, we hypothesized that the dear enemy effect may also modulate the androgen response to a territorial intrusion. Here we tested this hypothesis in male cichlid fish (Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus) using a paradigm of four repeated territorial intrusions, either by the same neighbour or by four different unfamiliar intruders. Neighbour intruders elicited lower aggression and a weaker androgen response than strangers on the first intrusion of the experiment. With repeated intrusions, the agonistic behaviour of the resident males against familiar intruders was similar to that displayed towards strangers. By the fourth intrusion the androgen response was significantly reduced and there was no longer a difference between the responses to the two types of intruders. These results suggest that the dear enemy effect modulates the androgen response to territorial intrusions and that repeated intrusions lead to a habituation of the androgen response.

Among African mole-rats, the giant mole-rat Fukomys mechowii is the largest social species. Despite several attempts to study a free-living population, information on its biology from natural habitats is very scarce. We mapped two neighbouring burrow systems of the giant mole-rat in a miombo woodland in Zambia. We provide information on the size and kin structure of the respective mole-rat families, architecture of their burrow systems, and characteristics of the food supply and soil around the two mapped and additional ten burrow systems. Both uncovered burrow systems were very large (total lengths, 2,245 and 743 m), making them the largest burrow systems ever mapped. Food resources around the additional ten burrow systems had a clumped distribution (standardized Morisita index of dispersion = 0.526), but a relatively high biomass (298 ± 455 g m−2). This, together with favourable soil conditions even in the advanced dry season (cone resistance, 328 ± 50 N m−2; soil density, 1.36 ± 0.06 g cm−3) indicates relatively hospitable ecological conditions. Both food supply and soil conditions were comparable with the conditions found in a miombo habitat of the solitary silvery mole-rat in Malawi. This suggests that there are no ecological constraints which would preclude the solitary life of a subterranean herbivore from the examined habitat. Microsatellite analysis supported the assumption that giant mole-rats live in monogamous multigenerational families with only one breeding pair of non-related animals and their offspring. The mean family size is consistent with previous findings on this species and comparable to that found in other Fukomys species studied thus far.

Seabird numbers can change rapidly as a result of environmental processes, both natural and anthropogenic. Informed management and conservation of seabirds requires accurate and precise monitoring of population size. However, for burrow‐nesting species this is rarely achieved due to spatial and temporal heterogeneity in burrow occupancy. Here, we describe a novel method for deriving more accurate population size estimates that employs mark‐recapture methods to correct for unknown variation in nest occupancy throughout a breeding season. We apply it to estimate breeding numbers of a colonial, burrowing seabird, the Little Penguin Eudyptula minor, on the Summerland Peninsula, Phillip Island, Australia. Estimates of active burrow numbers during the September 2008 to February 2009 breeding season were adjusted to numbers of breeding birds based on burrow occupation and modelled population demographics at six, fortnightly monitored reference sites. The population was estimated to be 26 100 (95% CI: 21 100–31 100) and 28 400 (23 800–33 000) breeding Penguins in two temporally separated surveys within one breeding season. We demonstrate using simulation that the method is robust to variation in burrow occupancy throughout the breeding season, providing consistent and more accurate estimates of population size. The advantage of using the corrected method is that confidence intervals will include the true population size. Confidence limits widened as burrow occupancy declined, reflecting the increased uncertainty as larger adjustments for low burrow occupancy were required. In contrast, the uncorrected method that uses burrow occupancy alone as a measure of breeding numbers was inconsistent and significantly underestimated population size across much of the breeding season. Although requiring considerably more survey effort, the corrected approach provides a more accurate means for monitoring population changes in colonially breeding animals while collecting demographic data that can help diagnose the drivers of population change.
