Spiral colonies of the diatom Aulacoseira ambigua were assigned the rank of forma (Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica). This spiral-shaped, colonial, centric diatom has limited geographical distribution and is currently reported to occur in only a few countries in the world. In Africa this species was described for the first time from the Vaal River, South Africa, but recent research on the Nile River also revealed its presence in Egypt. Physical and chemical data on water quality in these two river systems were compared to determine whether the presence of this uncommon ‘phenoecodeme’ could be ascribed to similar environmental conditions. Results indicate that the rivers are dissimilar with regard to many variables, but both rivers provide turbid, warm and eutrophic waters with medium to high mineral content and it was concluded that these factors favour and sustain the growth of this curved form.  相似文献

A detailed investigation into light, temperature and flow regimes of the Vaal River was done for the first time. The Vaal River is ecologically and economically one of the most important rivers in South Africa. In a South African context, the Vaal River, with an average Secchi disk depth (Z sd) of 0.41 m and an average euphotic zone depth (Z eu) of 1.3 m, is a moderately turbid system. Red light (approx. 670 nm) penetrated Vaal River water to a greater degree than other components of the light spectrum. Water temperature in the Vaal River (min. = 10, max. = 27 °C at midday), closely followed seasonal changes in average atmospheric temperatures. The water-column shows little temperature stratification. The Vaal River is a highly regulated system with relatively high discharge rates at Balkfontein (average 112 m3 s–1), but relatively low current velocity (approx. 0.35 m s–1). Discharge was the most important variable to influence transparency of Vaal River water. Higher discharge resulted in higher total suspended solids (TSS) concentration and higher extinction coefficient (k) values as well as in higher turbidity and thus in lower Z eu and Z sd. From the mean TSS (141 mg l–1) it was calculated that the Vaal River (mean annual run-off of 3532 million m3) transported 498016 tonnes of suspended solids per annum.  相似文献

Diel movements of Orange–Vaal smallmouth yellowfish Labeobarbus aeneus (Burchell, 1822) in the Vaal River, South Africa, were determined by externally attaching radio transmitters to 11 adult fish and manually tracking them between March and May 2012. Twenty-four radio telemetry monitoring surveys produced 2 304 diel tracks. At night, yellowfish displayed a preference for slow shallow (<0.3?m s?1, <0.5?m) and fast shallow habitats (>0.3?m s?1, <0.3?m), whereas by day they avoided these habitats, preferring fast deep areas (>0.3?m s?1, >0.3?m). The average total distance of 272?m moved per 24-hour period was three times greater than the diel range, and the average maximum displacement per minute was significantly higher in daytime (4?m) than at night (1.5?m). These findings suggest that L. aeneus is active primarily during the day in fast-flowing, deeper waters, and relatively inactive at night, when it occupies shallower habitats. This behaviour should be further explored to identify causal mechanisms underlying the diel habitat shifts in this species such as water temperature, foraging tactics and/or predator avoidance.  相似文献

The ionic composition and algal flora of twelve geothermal waters in southern South West Africa and north-western South Africa are described, many for the first time. Water temperatures ranged from 24,9 to 66 °C and salinity values indicated moderate mineralization. A trend of increasing sodium and sulphate dominance with increasing water temperature was evident. Green algae were confined to springs with low water temperatures (below 31 °C) while diatoms and blue-green algae were recorded in all the springs, at temperatures up to 66 °C. Flexibacteria (Chlcroflexus) were recorded only in the hotter springs, above 40 °C.  相似文献

The 1 mg/l phosphate effluent standard legislated in South Africa in 1980 in seven sensitive catchments, and ad hoc eutrophication-related requests, necessitated the monitoring of 53 impoundments throughout the country. Variables that were monitored, and are still being monitored in some cases, included nutrients, chlorophyll a, algal identification, suspended solids and other major inorganic constituents. The measurement of temperature and oxygen profiles was conducted on an ad hoc basis when the sites were visited. The results, as determined from data collected between 1989 and 1998, indicated a range of trophic states from oligotrophic to hyper-eutrophic in the sensitive catchments. The catchments that were covered in the survey are: the Vaal River, Crocodile River (North West Province), Pienaars River, Olifants River (Mpumalanga Province), Letaba River, Buffalo River, Berg River, White Mfolozi River, Mgeni River, Mlazi River and the Molopo River catchments.

The objective of this paper is to discuss the methods, variables and presentation for determining the trophic status of an impoundment for management purposes by using findings in the Bon Accord Dam, a small reservoir near Pretoria. The trophic status of selected impoundments was determined by using the mean total phosphorus (TP) concentrations, the nitrogen to phosphorus ratio, the mean chlorophyll a concentration, the presence of cyanobacteria and the turbidity (measured by means of Secchi disc readings) of the system.

The mean annual phosphorus concentrations dropped from more than 800μg/l to less than 100μg/l in three years, and have remained at that level since 1987. The authors suggest that further reductions in phosphorus input are necessary to prevent eutrophication in the reservoir.  相似文献

The culmen length of courting adult male Jackass Penguins Spheniscus demersus varied between colonies, with the largest culmens in southern Namibia and east of Cape Point, South Africa. Taxonomic distance, a single measure combining several morphological characters, was significantly and positively correlated with geographic distance between colonies.

Population changes between 1956 and 1978 were not significantly correlated with male mandible or flipper length, suggesting that adult size cannot be used as an index of population changes at individual colonies. Possible dispersal may complicate attempts to use changes at individual colonies as indices of changes in fish stocks of surrounding waters.  相似文献

The life cycles of the burrowing mayflies, Ephemera strigata Eaton and E. japonica McLach‐lan were studied comparatively between upper part and lower part of a small tributary of the Yoshino River. E. strigata was more common than E. japonica in the studies areas. E. japonica was found only in the upper part and in tiny tributaries of the stream. E. strigata was univoltine in the lower and in the upper parts of the stream. However, the population falls into two groups, one of which emerges in early May and the other in summer. Water temperature seems to be one of the factors affecting the variable life cycle of E. strigata. E. japonica is univoltine. Emergence of this species was observed from June to August.  相似文献

The invasive freshwater snail Tarebia granifera (Lamarck, 1822) was first reported in South Africa in 1999 and it has become widespread across the country, with some evidence to suggest that it reduces benthic macroinvertebrate biodiversity. The current study aimed to identify the primary abiotic drivers behind abundance patterns of T. granifera, by comparing the current abundance of the snail in three different regions, and at three depths, of the highly modified Nseleni River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Tarebia granifera was well established throughout the Nseleni River system, with an overall preference for shallow waters and seasonal temporal patterns of abundance. Although it is uncertain what the ecological impacts of the snail in this system are, its high abundances suggest that it should be controlled where possible and prevented from invading other systems in the region.  相似文献

We surveyed the proportion of anguillid eel species inhabiting South Korea natural waters. From September 2014 to August 2015, 429 eels were collected in various habitats for identification using morphological features and DNA-based molecular methods. We found 424 Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica, 98.8%), two European eels (A. anguilla, 0.5%), one American eel (A. rostrata, 0.23%), one tropical eel (A. marmorata, 0.23%), and one short-finned eel (A. bicolor pacifica, 0.23%). Three (A. anguilla, A. rostrata, and A. bicolor pacifica) are exotic species to the natural waters of South Korea; this study is the first record of their distribution in this region. Specifically, A. anguilla was found in the Lake Soyang and Cheongpyeong, while A. rostrata was found only in the Lake Cheongpyeong, and A. bicolor pacifica was found in the Geum River estuary.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation in concentrations of nutrients and phytoplankton in Lake Yogo for 2 years, from May 2000 to May 2002, in order to clarify the seasonal succession of phytoplankton and the effect of various manipulations on it. It was revealed that in spite of the installation of aeration systems and the pumping of mesotrophic water from Lake Biwa during the summer season, the trophic state of Lake Yogo overall has not improved during the past few decades. However, the pumping of water from Lake Biwa did affect the concentrations of nutrients and the periods of cyanobacterial bloom during the summer. The pumping period was different in each year, and the cyanobacterial bloom occurred during the period without pumping in both years. The aeration destratification was not strong enough to prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Cyanobacteria and Bacillariophyceae contributed most to the phytoplankton biomass in both years. Aphanizomenon, Anabaena, and Microcystis were the main genera among cyanobacteria. The bloom of Aphanizomenon or Anabaena occurred early in the summer, and was then replaced by Microcystis. Aphanizomenon was almost always present, and often formed bloom even in winter. The seasonal succession of Bacillariophyceae was almost the same in both years and was well categorized: winter-growing species such as Aulacoseira pusilla (F. Meister) Tuji et Houki and species of Thalassiosiraceae, spring-growing species such as Asterionella formosa Hassall, Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton, and Synedra cf. acus, and fall-growing species such as Aulacoseira ambigua (Grunow) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenb.) The Vaal River, South Africa, historically had a rich diversity of native submerged macrophytes with at least 13 species from 5 families recorded. Over the past 10 years there has been a noticeable reduction in the occurrence and diversity of submerged macrophytes in the river. It is possible that this is linked to the recent increase in the populations of invasive alien grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella Cuvier & Valenciennes (Cyprinidae) in the river, where populations have been a concern since 2005. Grass carp invasions worldwide have been shown to have severe impacts on macrophyte biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. This fish is an aggressive feeder on submerged macrophytes, as well as being an ecosystem engineer that can change water and sediment chemistry.  相似文献

The present study was carried out on the non-tidal reaches of the River Ely, South Wales, from October 1979 to October 1980. The seasonal variations of the chlorophyll-a content of the phytoplankton was unimodal with one maximum in May and a minimum in December. The chlorophyll-a content varied from 0.277 to 41.259 mg m?3. The primary productivity showed a bimodal seasonal distribution with two maxima in May and September and lower values throughout the remainder of the year, particularly in winter. The value for the primary productivity varied from 0.269 to 24.302 mg C m?3 h?1. A positive correlation was obtained between chlorophyll-a content and primary productivity. The seasonal distribution of the dominant algal species and the saprobity of the River Ely were also studied. The diatom species almost showed a similar seasonal periodicity. Their concentrations were low during the winter months and high during most of the spring and summer months. Many of the dominant diatom species found in the phytoplankton populations were either considered by the other authors as saprobic (Nitzchia palea) or as inhabitants of eutrophic waters (Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula cryptocephala and Synedra ulna). Chlamydomonas spp. were the most abundant green algae followed by Chlorella vulgaris. The effect of sewage effluent disposal and cattle excreta at three of the sampling sites might partly explain the presence of high Chlamydomonas spp. populations at those sites. Physical factors (low flow rates, high transparency and water temperature) and organic pollution at some sampling sites seemed to play an important role in increasing the number of algal species during spring and summer. The non-tidal reaches of the River Ely were found to be β-mesosaprobic above and below Station 5 and α-mesosaprobic at the latter station and therefore, the river can be considered as polluted at Station 5 and mildly polluted at the others.  相似文献

Freshwater fungi have received little attention by scientific research in recent years, especially fungi of the pelagic zone. Recently, parasitic fungi, termed chytrids, have been found to play important roles in aquatic food webs. Yet, the diversity and community structure of planktonic fungi including chytrids are not well studied. In this study, we examined the temporal fluctuations of freshwater fungi, including chytrids, in Lake Inba by using molecular techniques of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). DGGE profiles, and associated sequence analysis, indicated that chytrids were present on all sampling dates from May to October (n = 12). In addition, analysis showed that a large proportion of the sequences belonged to chytrids of both parasitic and saprotrophic species. This finding was supported by microscopic observations using Calcofluor white to stain chytrids infecting various phytoplankton species. The percentages of infection by chytrids on two dominant diatom species, Aulacoseira granulata and Aulacoseira ambigua, showed a similar seasonal pattern in the DGGE band profiles. From the phylogenetic analysis and microscopic identification, the chytrids infecting the two diatoms are likely to be affiliated to Chytriomyces sp. and Zygorhizidium sp.. This is the first study to show that DGGE is a useful preliminary approach for examining the diversity of planktonic fungi including chytrids. Our results indicate both parasitic and saprotrophic chytrids are a significant component of freshwater fungi inhabiting the pelagic zone of Lake Inba, Japan. Further modification of DGGE, together with new molecular techniques and microscopic observation, would reveal the hidden diversity and ecological significance of planktonic fungi in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur frequently in the South China Sea (SCS), causing enormous economic losses in aquaculture. We analyzed historical HAB records during the period from 1980 to 2003 in SCS. We found that HABs-affected areas have expanded and the frequency of HABs varied during this period. The seasonal and annual variations, as well as causative algal species of HABs are different among the four regions. Areas with frequent HABs include the Pearl River Estuary (China), the Manila Bay (the Philippines), the Masinloc Bay (the Philippines), and the western coast of Sabah (Malaysia). HABs occurred frequently during March–May in the northern region of SCS, May–July in the eastern region, July in the western region, and year-round in the southern region. Among the species that cause HABs, Noctiluca scintillans dominated in the northern region, and Pyrodinium bahamense in the southern and eastern regions. Causative species also varied in different years for the entire SCS. Both P. bahamense and N. scintillans were the dominant species during 1980–2003. Some species not previously recorded formed blooms during 1991–2003, including Phaeocystis globosa, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Heterosigma akashiwo, and Mesodinium rubrum. Variations in HABs are related to various regional conditions, such as a reversed monsoon wind in the entire SCS, river discharges in the northern area, upwelling in Vietnam coastal waters during southwest winds and near Malaysia coastal waters during northeast winds, and eutrophication from coastal aquaculture in the Pearl River estuary, Manila Bay, and Masinloc Bay. Despite concerted surveys, the Maloti minnow Pseudobarbus quathlambae (Barnard 1938) had not been recorded in South African waters for almost eighty years since the original collections were made at the type locality in the upper uMkhomazana River in 1938. The species was therefore declared extinct in South Africa, whereas extant populations were considered confined to various rivers in the Lesotho highlands. In April 2017, however, this species was rediscovered in the Mzimkhulu River system in KwaZulu-Natal. The rediscovery of a species that was considered locally extinct supports the need for extensive surveys to determine its distribution range, estimate population sizes, assess conservation status and implement effective strategies to ensure its continued existence in KwaZulu-Natal.  相似文献

Aulacoseira skvortzowii sp. nov. is a diatom taxon present in modern plankton assemblages and sedimentary deposits from Lake Baikal, Russia. It has been previously reported as A. islandica (O. Müll.) Simonsen, A. islandica ssp. helvetica (O. Müll.) Simonsen, a sporangial frustule of A. baicalensis (K. Meyer) Simonsen, and Aulacoseira “spore”. However, its microstructure, ecology, and ability to form true resting spores provide ample criteria to describe this diatom as Aulacoseira skvortzowii sp. nov.  相似文献

Three new ichnotaxa are described from Cenozoic paralic to continental sediments on the west coast of South Africa. Stellavelum arborensis and Stellavelum uncinum are assigned to a mixed Skolithos and Cruziana ichnofacies and Termitichnus namibiensis is assigned to the Termitichnus ichnofacies. An interpretation of the sedimentary record shows that the Stellavelum trace makers were probably sediment ingesting annelids that lived in dense colonies in sheltered lagoonal environments during Neogene times. The Termitichnus namibiensis trace fossils are interpreted as actively backfilled termite nests which form an early to mid‐Pleistocene palimpsest, terrestrial ichnofabric which is superimposed on the older marine sediments.  相似文献

Oreochromis aureus was imported from Israel into South Africa in 1959 but data on its current status in South Africa are lacking. Genomic DNA was extracted and the COI gene amplified at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity. The identity of the sequences and specimens was determined using the Barcode of Life Data Systems and GenBank. Morphological and genetic assessment demonstrated that 11 specimens collected from two farm dams in the Eerste River System, Western Cape province, were Oreochromis aureus. A MaxEnt model compiled using global distribution, rainfall and temperature data predicted that large areas of southern Africa were climatically suitable for this species, indicating considerable invasion debt in southern Africa. As a result, surveys to assess for the extent of the invasion in South Africa and eradication of existing populations, if feasible, are recommended management actions.  相似文献

Water samples were collected from fourteen sampling points along the Hunyani River system and subjected to various filtration treatments involving glass fibre filters and 1,2 and 0,45 pm membrane filters. Chemical analyses of the filtered waters showed that nitrogen, phosphorus and iron were lost by different filtration treatments. Filtration by membrane filters led to a reduction of algal growth potential as demonstrated by algal bioassays using Selanastrwn capricornutum Printz as the test alga.

Algal bioassays showed that biologically available phosphorus was primarily removed by the 1,2 μm membrane filter while biologically available nitrogen and iron was principally lost by filtration through the 0,25 μm membrane filter. A refined algal bioassay designed to determine the identity of limiting micronutrients found that all essential micronutrients were affected by membrane filtration.  相似文献

Winter ice cover is a fundamental feature of north temperate aquatic systems and is associated with the least productive months of the year. Here we describe a previously unknown freshwater habitat for algal and microbial communities in the ice cover of the freshwater St. Lawrence River, Quebec, Canada. Sampling performed during winter 2005 revealed the presence of viable algal cells, such as Aulacoseira islandica (O. Müll.) Simonsen (Bacillariophyceae), and microbial assemblage growing in the ice and at the ice–water interface. Vertical channels (1–5 mm wide) containing algae were also observed. Concentrations of chl a ranged between 0.5 and 169 μg · L?1 of melted ice, with maximal concentrations found in the lower part of the ice cores. These algae have the potential to survive when ice breakup occurs and reproduce rapidly in spring/summer conditions. Freshwater ice algae can thus contribute to in situ primary production, biodiversity, and annual carbon budget in various habitats of riverine communities.  相似文献
