In six Italian populations of the rhinotermitid Reticulitermes lucifugus there is a diploid complement of 2n=42 with no visible sex chromosome difference between male and female reproductives. The first male meiotic division in this species is, however, characterised by the presence of inter-change multiples. Thus males from three mainland colonies at Udine, Tombolo and Barberino, as well as a Sicilian colony (Polizzi), are regularly heterozygous for a single translocation chain (C) multiple of IV (2n=19II+ C IV). A fourth mainland colony (Squinzano) proved to be polymorphic. Here, three of the six males analysed regularly formed 21 bivalents; two further males had nineteen bivalents and a chain of four multiple while a sixth male had a predominance of meiocytes with 19 bivalents and a chain of four together with a small number of cells with 18 bivalents and a chain of six multiple. Finally a sixth colony from Sardinia (Sennori) was characterized by larger multiple configurations involving chains or rings of eight.  相似文献

A unique cytogenetic system in monotremes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
All 3 extant genera of monotremes show a unique kind of cytogenetic system involving the formation of a structurally heterozygous chain multiple apparently coupled with a system of complementary gametic elimination. In the echidna Tachyglossus there are 63 chromosomes in the male and 64 in the female. This is associated with an X1X2Y/X1X1X2X2 sex chromosome system. Additionally in both sexes there are 6 mitotic chromosomes (a-f) which have no obvious homologous partners. At male meiosis these are included with the 3 sex chromosomes in a chain multiple of nine which has the constitution X1·Y·X2·f·e·d·c·b·a. This shows convergent orientation at first metaphase leading to the production of two kinds of sperm, namely X1X2 eca and Yfdb. Since no individual of either sex has been found homozygous for any of the a-f elements it follows that only gametes carrying different combinations of the three unpaired elements give rise to viable offspring. Whether this depends on gametic selection or on zygotic lethality is not known. An apparently identical system operates in Zaglossus. In the platypus Ornithorhynchus, on the other hand, there are 52 chromosomes in both males and females associated with an XY/XX sex chromosome mechanism and the presence of 4 consistently unpaired elements (a-d) at mitosis. A chain multiple of 10 forms at male meiosis involving the 2 sex chromosomes, the 4 unpaired elements and two of the small pairs of autosomes. Additionally the six longest autosome pairs in Tachyglossus and the X1 show a polymorphism for size which in heterozygous combination leads to the formation of unequal bivalents at male meiosis.  相似文献

The objective of our study was to investigate sexual reproduction of Daphnia magna associated with mating behaviors and hatching rates, according to different algal food sources. Since a diatom is known to contain more abundant long‐chain poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), we hypothesized that the diatom‐consuming D. magna would exhibit more successful reproduction rates. Upon the hypothesis, we designed three experiments using two algal species, a green alga (Chlorella vulgaris) and a diatom (Stephanodiscus hantzschii). From the results, we found that the mating frequency and copulation duration increased in the treatment with S. hantzschii, resulting in a significant increase of hatching rates of resting eggs. In the other two repetitive mating strategies (e.g., one female vs. multiple males, and one male vs. multiple females), we found that the hatching rates of resting eggs were greater in the S. hantzschii treatment. In addition to the mating strategy, male body size significantly increased in the diatom treatment, hence average diameter of penis was also statistically different among the treatments (greater diameter in the S. hantzschii treatment). To examine the effect of algal food quality, we estimated quantity of fatty acids in the two algal species. Our result showed that S. hantzschii had a higher proportion of long‐chain PUFAs than C. vulgaris. Furthermore, a stable isotope analysis revealed that carbon and nitrogen originated from S. hantzschii were more assimilated to D. magna. In summary, our study manifested that diatom consumption of D. magna leads to more successful sexual reproduction. We then discussed how the diatom consumption of zooplankton influences food web dynamics in a freshwater ecosystem.  相似文献

The concept of bends or chain reversals [nonhelical dipeptide sequences in which the distance R3 (i,i+3) between the Cα atoms of residues i and i+3 is ≦ 7.0 Å] has been extended to define double bends as tripeptide sequences, not in an α-helix, in which two successive distances R3(i,i+3) and R3 (i+1, i+4) are both ≦7.0 Å, with analogous definitions for higher-order multiple bends. A sample of 23 proteins, consisting of 4050 residues, contains 235 single, 58 double, and 11 higher-order multiple bends. Multiple bends may occur as combinations of the “standard” type I, II, and III chain reversals (as well as their mirror images), but usually they require distortions from these well-defined conformations. The frequency of occurrence of amino acids often differs significantly between single and multiple bends. The probability distribution of R3 distances does not differ in single and multiple bends. However, R4 (the distance between the Cα atoms of residues i and i+4) in multiple bends is generally shorter than in tripeptide sequences containing single bends. The value of R4 in many multiple bends is near those for α-helices. In some other multiple bends, R4 is even shorter, indicating that these structures are very compact. The signs of the dihedral angles about the virtual bonds connecting Cα atoms and the values of curvature and torsion, as defined by means of differential geometry, indicate that there is a preference for single and multiple bends to be right-handed (like an α-helical sequence, for example) and that there is a strong tendency to conserve the handedness in both single-bend components of many multiple bends. These often have a strong resemblance to distorted single turns of an α-helix and do not constitute chain reversals. Double bends, in which the signs of two successive virtual-bond dihedral angles differ, have conformations that are very different from an α-helix. They act as chain reversals occuring over three residues. These chain reversals have not been described previously. Multiple bends may play an important role in protein folding because they occur fairly frequently in proteins and cause major changes in the direction of the polypeptide chain.  相似文献

Mating frequency and the amount of sperm transferred during mating have important consequences on progeny sex ratio and fitness of haplodiploid insects. Production of female offspring may be limited by the availability of sperm for fertilizing eggs. This study examined multiple mating and its effect on fitness of the cabbage aphid parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae McIntosh (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae). Female D. rapae mated once, whereas males mated with on average more than three females in a single day. The minimum time lag between two consecutive matings by a male was 3 min, and the maximum number of matings a male achieved in a day was eight. Sperm depletion occurred as a consequence of multiple mating in D. rapae. The number of daughters produced by females that mated with multiple‐mated males was negatively correlated with the number of matings achieved by these males. Similarly, the proportion of female progeny decreased in females that mated with males that had already mated three times. Although the proportion of female progeny resulting from multiple mating decreased, the decrease was quicker when the mating occurred on the same day than when the matings occurred once per day over several days. Mating success of males initially increased after the first mating, but then males became ‘exhausted’ in later matings; their mating success decreased with the number of prior matings. The fertility of females was affected by mating with multiple‐mated males. The study suggests that male mating history affects the fitness of male and female D. rapae.  相似文献

Oleosins, which are structural proteins on the surface of intracellular oil bodies, have been found in the sporophytic seeds of angiosperms. Here, we report an oleosin from the female gametophyte of gymnosperm Pinus ponderosa Laws, seed and another oleosin from the male gametophyte of Brassica napus L. With the pine seed gametophyte, we identified two putative oleosins of 15 and 10 kDa, which are similar to the oleosins in angiosperm seeds in terms of their presence in the oil bodies in massive quantity. The complete sequence of the cDNA encoding the gametophytic 15-kDa oleosin was obtained, and it has a predicted amino-acid sequence similar to those of oleosins in angiosperm sporophytic seeds. A Brassica napus pollen cDNA sequence, which was reported earlier, would encode an amino-acid sequence somewhat similar to those of seed oleosins. We tested if the dissimilarity signifies a substantially different oleosin in the Brassica male gametophyte or an analytic error. By direct sequencing of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified fragment of genomic DNA, we obtained evidence showing that this reported dissimilarity is likely to have arisen from a sequencing error. Our predicted sequence of the Brassica pollen oleosin has all the structural characteristics of seed oleosins. A phylogenic tree of 20 oleosins, including those from sporophytic and gametophytic tissues of angiosperm and gymnosperm, was constructed based on their amino-acid sequences. We discuss the evolution of oleosins, and conclude that oleosins are ancient proteins with multiple lineages whose root cannot be determined at this time.Abbreviations PCR polymerase chain reaction - TAG triacylglycerols This work was supported by USDA grant 91-01439 (AHCH). The dioecious plant Rumex acetosa has a multiple sex chromosome system: XX in female and XY1Y2 in male. Both types of Y chromosome were isolated from chromosome spreads of males by manual microdissection, and their chromosomal DNA was amplified using degenerate oligonucleotide primed-polymerase chain reaction (DOP-PCR). When the biotin-labeled DOP-PCR product was hybridized with competitor DNA in situ, the fluorescent signal painted the Y chromosomes. A library of Y chromosome DNA was constructed from the DOP-PCR product and screened for DNA sequences specific to the Y chromosome. One Y chromosome-specific DNA sequence was identified and designated RAYSI (R. acetosa Y chromosome-specific sequence I). RAYSI is a tandemly arranged repetitive DNA sequence that maps to the 4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole bands of both Y chromosomes. 1. Multiple male copulations can have detrimental effects on female fitness due to sperm limitation. 2. Monandrous Naryciinae females are immobile while the males are short‐lived and do not feed. Multiple male mating is therefore expected to lead to sperm limitation in females. Sperm limitation and male limitation are hypothesised as causes of the repeated evolution of parthenogenetic reproduction in the Psychidae. 3. In this study, the effects of multiple male mating on female reproduction are investigated in several species of Naryciinae by allowing males multiple copulations. The results for two species, Siederia listerella and Dahlica lichenella, are compared. The sex ratios of 53 natural populations are examined for indications of male limitation. 4. Previous copulations by the male increased the female's risk of remaining unfertilised. However, contrary to expectations, those unfertilised females were capable of successful re‐mating. 5. In S. listerella, the number of previous copulations of males negatively influenced female fitness. Females produced 30% fewer offspring if they mated with a previously mated male. In D. lichenella, the older the male and the lower its number of total lifetime copulations, the higher the female's reproductive success. 6. Only a fraction of the investigated populations had a female‐skewed sex ratio, but differences in development time between males and females could lead to reproductive asynchrony. 7. In conclusion, male mating history did not lead to strong sperm limitation in Naryciinae as had been suggested by their life history.  相似文献

Here we describe the hitherto unknown details of the highly unusual mating behaviour of Saltella sphondylii—a widely cited model for male longevity costs caused by multiple copulations. When compared to the known mating behaviour of 28 sepsid species, we find five unique behavioural elements based on frame-by-frame analyses of video-recordings. These new behaviours are documented with video clips. We suggest that the male longevity costs could be due to copulation bouts that involve multiple insertions of a comparatively membranous phallus into the female. We compare the phallus of the Saltella sphondylii to those from three other species (Themira putris, Parapaleosepsis plebeia, Sepsis punctum).  相似文献

We investigated the hypotheses that Liriomyza trifolii is a polyandrous species and that multiple mating is required to maximize female fecundity. In addition, the hypothesis that male copulating frequency reduces female fecundity was examined. Using sterile and fertile males, we found that L. trifolii females mate more than once during their life span, and that multiple mating is required to maximize female fecundity. A similar amount of sperm was transferred during five successive male copulations with an equal insemination probability. However, the probability of reproduction failure was strongly correlated with the male copulating sequence. Moreover, the failure rate of sperm transfer was found to be 6.8%. In light of these results, possible selection pressures driving for polyandry in L. trifolii are discussed.  相似文献

Electroantennographic (EAG) responses of the male pea moth, Cydia nigricana, to a range of saturated and unsaturated straight chain alcohols and acetates were examined. Responses to saturated compounds of different chain lengths (C10 to c16) showed that acetates are much more active than alcohols, the shorter chain compounds (particularly C12 acetates) being the most active. With mono-unsaturated compounds, C12 acetates with the double bond at C-8, C-9 or C-10 elicited the largest responses and (El-10-dodecenyl acetate produced a greater response than any other compound tested. By analogy with results obtained with C.pomonella, (E, E)-8,lO-dodecadienyl acetate was tested and gave an EAG response larger than that for (E)-10-dodecenyl acetate. (E)-10-dodecenyl acetate and (E, E)-8,lO-dodecadienyl acetate were found to be strong attractants for male C.nigricana in the field.  相似文献

We found a new X-linked dominant mouse mutation. This mouse has the same phenotype as Td, which exhibits hyperkeratotic skin, reduced viability in affected females, a tendency to be smaller, lighter weight than the normal sibs during weaning age, and prenatal lethality in affected males. To map the locus, we tested 267 progeny from an intraspecific backcross between affected females and wild-origin strain males. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed with microsatellite markers of the proximal region of the mouse X Chromosome (Chr). This mutant showed no recombination with DXMit 123, DXMit 55, or DXMit 26. The gene position and phenotype of this mutant were very similar to those of Td. Therefore, it is speculated that the new mutant gene is a multiple allele of Td, and we designated it Tattered-Hokkaido (Td ho ). Linkage analysis of these animals suggested a possible gene order of cen-(Td ho , DXMit123, DXMit55, DXMit26)–DXMit161–DXMit54–DXMit103–DXMit52–DXMit190–DXMit138) in the X Chr. Prenatal lethality of male mutants was also investigated, with 12.5 to 16.5 embryonic day (E) backcrossed embryos from affected F1 females. It was found that the male mutants died between E12.5 and E14.5. The cause of death of male mutants is discussed in relation with the other proximal genes of the X Chr. The mating system of the viviparous rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus was studied using aquarium mating experiments and paternity testing by DNA fingerprinting. Individually specific DNA fingerprints were produced and the paternal relationships determined with the use of the restriction enzyme HinfI and the DNA probe (CAC)5. Two types of mating experiments, multiple-male and single-male, were set up to investigate the effect of male sizes on their mating success, as determined by number of females fertilized. Male size was positively and significantly related to mating success in the multiple-male situation in which male–male interaction was present, but not in the single-male situation in which no male–male interaction was involved. Females produced one to seven batches of larvae, and all batches from individual females had identical paternity. Most females were fertilized by a single male but one case of multiple paternity was detected. The laboratory study suggested the principal mating system of S. marmoratus to be promiscuity, although multiple mating by females was uncommon.  相似文献

The decapentaplegic (dpp) gene in Drosophila is involved in multiple developmental processes, and is a highly conserved among various eukaryotic species, including Bombyx mori. Although the gene has well been characterized in Drosophila species the B. mori dpp has not yet been functionally analyzed. In this study, we analyzed the expression pattern of B. mori dpp in 12 different developmental days/stages (7 days for fifth instar larvae, 2 days for spinning stage, 2 days for pupal stages, and 1 day for adults) in both male and female silkworms using quantitative real‐time RT‐PCR (qRT‐PCR). mRNA expression of B. mori dpp was much higher in the female larvae up to the mid‐stage of the fifth instar compared with the corresponding male larvae. Similarly, dpp expression also was much higher in females during the eclosion period than that in the corresponding male pupae. During the embryonic stage, the expression level of the dpp gene was much higher compared to that of adult stage in both male and female silkworms. These results suggest that the B. mori dpp gene plays multiple roles in the developmental of B. mori.  相似文献

Males can typically increase their lifetime reproductive success by mating with multiple females. However, recent studies across a broad range of species have demonstrated physiological constraints on male multiple mating. In this study, we investigate male mating capacity in Extatosoma tiaratum, a facultative parthenogenetic phasmatid. Sperm limitation is thought to be one factor favouring the evolution and maintenance of parthenogenetic reproduction, but studies on male mating ability in facultative parthenogenetic species are extremely rare. To explore whether male mating success varies with mating history, we provided males with weekly mating opportunities with different females throughout their lives. We then observed mating success, and the variation in ejaculate size and quality within each mating. We showed that most, but not all, males can mate multiply, however the amount of ejaculate produced is variable and depends upon male body mass and mating history.  相似文献

Elaborate, sexually dimorphic traits are widely thought to evolve under sexual selection through female preference, male–male competition, or both. The orangethroat darter (Etheostoma spectabile) is a sexually dichromatic fish in which females exhibit no preferences for male size or coloration. We tested whether these traits affect individual reproductive success in E. spectabile when multiple males are allowed to freely compete for a female. The quality and quantity of male coloration were associated with greater success in maintaining access to the female and in spawning as the primary male (first male to participate). On the other hand, sneaking behavior showed little correlation with coloration. Male breeding coloration in E. spectabile may therefore demonstrate how intrasexual competition can be a predominant factor underlying the evolution of male ornaments.  相似文献

Effects of polyandry versus monogamy were assessed for the beetle Phoracantha semipunctata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) by comparing measures of female reproductive success, including fecundity, egg viability, time until eclosion, and clutch size. The effect of intermittent presence or absence of a male was also evaluated. Polyandry was detrimental to female reproductive success in comparison to monogamy. Fecundity, egg viability, and clutch size were lower, and time to eclosion were increased for eggs from females with multiple mates compared with monogamous females. Intermittent presence of males had no effect on female reproductive success. Possible explanations for the decreased fecundity experienced by females with multiple mates include sperm competition intensity, costs of male harassment, and exceeding the optimal mating frequency. Females may reduce costs associated with polyandry by spending less time on host logs where mating occurs.  相似文献

In group‐living species with male dominance hierarchies where receptive periods of females do not overlap, high male reproductive skew would be predicted. However, the existence of female multiple mating and alternative male mating strategies can call into question single‐male monopolization of paternity in groups. Ring‐tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are seasonally breeding primates that live in multi‐male, multi‐female groups. Although established groups show male dominance hierarchies, male dominance relationships can break down during mating periods. In addition, females are the dominant sex and mate with multiple males during estrus, including group residents, and extra‐group males—posing the question of whether there is high or low male paternity skew in groups. In this study, we analyzed paternity in a population of wild L. catta from the Bezà Mahafaly Special Reserve in southwestern Madagascar. Paternity was determined with 80–95% confidence for 39 offspring born to nine different groups. We calculated male reproductive skew indices for six groups, and our results showed a range of values corresponding to both high and low reproductive skew. Between 21% and 33% of offspring (3 of 14 or three of nine, counting paternity assignments at the 80% or 95% confidence levels, respectively) were sired by extra‐troop males. Males siring offspring within the same group during the same year appear to be unrelated. Our study provides evidence of varying male reproductive skew in different L. catta groups. A single male may monopolize paternity across one or more years, while in other groups, >1 male can sire offspring within the same group, even within a single year. Extra‐group mating is a viable strategy that can result in extra‐group paternity for L. catta males.  相似文献

Current concepts of sexual selection suggest that male reproductive success is determined by multiple sexual traits. As expression and production of multiple sexual traits are frequently associated with each other, positive or negative correlations among multiple sexual traits ensue. These relationships among traits associated with male reproductive success may be crucial in the evolution of male reproductive strategies. Here, we investigate phenotypic relationships among sexually selected traits in the armed bean bug Riptortus pedestris. In this insect, males with a larger body and weapon are more likely to win male–male competitions, and males with a larger weapon or higher courtship rate are more attractive to females. There was a significant positive correlation between body size and weapon size, whereas the courtship rate had significant negative correlations with body size and weapon size. Our results suggested that there was a phenotypic trade‐off between courtship rate and male morphology. In this insect, smaller males may make more effort in courtship behavior as an alternative mating tactic.  相似文献
