Reproductive aging and assisted reproduction are becoming progressively more relevant in human medicine. Research with human subjects is limited in many aspects, and consequently animal models may have considerable utility. Such models have provided insight into follicular function, oocyte maturation, and reproductive aging. However, models are often selected based on factors other than physiological or functional similarities. Although the mare has received limited attention as a model for reproduction in women, comparisons between these species indicate that the mare has many attributes of a good model. As the mare ages, cyclic and hormonal changes parallel those of older women. The initial sign of reproductive aging in both species is a shortening of the reproductive cycle with elevated concentrations of FSH. Subsequently, cycles become longer with intermittent ovulations and elevated concentrations of FSH and LH. Reproduction ceases with failure of follicular growth and elevated gonadotropins, apparently because of ovarian failure. In the older woman and mare, oocytes have been maintained in meiotic arrest for decades -- approximately four to five for the woman and two to three for the mare; in both species, reduced oocyte quality is the end factor identified in age-associated infertility. After induction of oocyte maturation in vivo, the timeline to ovulation is the same for the mare and woman, suggesting a comparable sequence of events. The mare's anatomy, long follicular phase and single dominant follicle provide a foundation for studies in oocyte and follicular development. The aim of this review is to evaluate the mare as an animal model to study age-associated changes in reproduction and to improve our understanding of oocyte and follicular maturation in vivo.  相似文献

A nonovulating, hormone-treated mare was used successfully as an oocyte recipient. The mare's ovarian activity was suppressed using progesterone and estrogen treatment. This treatment was stopped, then estrogen was administered for 3 d prior to the transfer. An oocyte was recovered from the follicle of a donor mare and was transferred via flank laparotomy into the recipient's oviduct. The recipient mare was inseminated 7 h before transfer. The recipient was treated with intramuscular progesterone from the day after transfer until 47 d after transfer, and then with oral altrenogest until 150 d gestation. A normal colt was born at 321 d gestation, and was shown by DNA analysis to be the progeny of the donor mare. This is the first report of fertilization and embryo development to term after transfer of oocytes to a nonovulating mare, and, to our knowledge, the first of its kind in any domestic species.  相似文献

A mare with XO gonadal dysgenesis was reported to have produced two foals. Blood samples from the mare, her two foals, their sire and the mare's sire were typed for blood-group and serum protein variants in conjunction with registry requirements. Both foals qualified as offspring of the reported parents. However, the blood-typed mare could be excluded as an offspring of her alleged sire. An alternative hypothesis to explain the blood-type and karyotype findings was that a fertile mare had been substituted for the XO mare, as surrogate mother and blood-type donor. A computer search of 120,000 blood-type records identified only one other horse with the same blood type as the dam of the foals. That horse was a mare of the same breed and owned by the person who had attempted to register foals from the XO mare. These blood-type findings invalidated the allegation of XO fertility and emphasize the need for parentage verification to support reports of unusual reproductive performance.  相似文献

A study was conducted over a 2-mo period to compare estrus detection results obtained using an androgenized teaser mare with those obtained with a stallion, using the same group of 10 normally cyclic mares. The teaser mare was androgenized by administration of boldenone undecylenate (500 mg i.m. every 1 to 2 wk), and allowed to run loose with the mare group. Estrus was determined by observation of the group for a 30-min period daily. In the second month of the experiment, a marking harness was used on the androgenized mare to help detect mares mounted when in estrus. Estrous periods detected by each teasing method were 1) first month: stallion, 18; androgenized mare, 5; 2) second month: stallion, 16; androgenized mare, 9. There were no estrous periods detected by the androgenized mare that were not also detected by the stallion. Under these conditions, the androgenized mare was not an adequate estrus detection aid. Also discussed are the successful results of an independent trial on a breeding farm using an androgenized mare as an estrus detection aid.  相似文献

Four herds of pony mares, each consisting of a stallion and six mares, were used to characterize the nature of herding by the stallion and the factors that induced the herding behavior. Herding behaviors were compared among four successive treatments (six mares alone, stallion added, two new mares added, and entire herd moved to a new pasture). A new treatment was initiated every 7 days and behavior was studied for 5 consecutive days (Days 1-5) for each treatment. Observations were made every 10 min during a 2-h period for each day. The extent of herding was quantitated by the mean distances between mares. The extent of snaking (herding with the head and neck extended and ears held back) was scored 0, 1, 2, or 3 (nil, minimal, intermediate, and maximal, respectively). The mean distance among the original mares on Day 1 when the mares were alone was 5.0 mare lengths and was reduced (P < 0.05) to 1.9 mare lengths when the stallion was added. The mean distance among the original mares of an established stallion/mare herd (3.8 mare lengths) was reduced (P < 0.05) on the day the herd was moved to a new pasture (1.9 mare lengths), similar to the effect of the introduction of the stallion. Scores for the extent of snaking, as well as the extent of herding, were highest (P < 0.05) on Day 1 when the stallion was added or the stallion/mare herd was moved to a new pasture. The extent of herding and snaking decreased (P < 0.05) by Day 2 and was seen only occasionally on Days 3-5. The addition of new mares to the herd did not induce herding of the original mares. However, the new mares maintained mean distances of 8-12 mare lengths from the original mares, resulting primarily from chasing by the stallion. By Day 4, the distances between the new and original mares were not different (P > 0.05) from the distances among the original mares.  相似文献

This report describes a case of blind vagina diagnosed during a pre-breeding evaluation of a 5-year-old crossbred Lusitano mare. This mare was mated twice during the previous breeding season but remained open. Clinical evaluation revealed the existence of follicles in the ovaries and an enlarged uterus. An ultrasound examination showed that a granular free-floating fluid distended the uterus. No connection was detected between the uterus and the vagina and a presumptive diagnosis of congenital vaginal obstruction was raised. On vaginal examination it was noticed that the vagina was short in depth and ended as a blind pouch. The typical cervical morphology was not observed. Careful evaluation of the clinical situation, both during the follicular and the luteal phases of the mare's oestrous cycle, lead to a diagnosis of segmental aplasia of the cranial vagina. The length of gestation in Andalusian, or Spanish Purebred (SPB) and Arabian (AB) mares reared in Spain was analysed, based on 766 spontaneous full-term deliveries appertaining to 141 mares of SPB breed and 72 mares of AB breed in 31 breeding seasons. The data were obtained from the Yeguada Militar de Jerez de la Frontera stud farm in Cádiz, Spain. The mean length of gestation was of 336.8+/-0.48 days in the SPB mares and 340.3+/-0.63 days in AB mares. To assess the accurate prediction of time of birth the potential effect of a number of factors was investigated. The influences of the breed, mare, month and year of mating, age of the mother, number of births and sex of the foal were statistically significant. The factor have the greatest influence over the gestation length was the mare itself, with a correlation among consecutive births of around 0.4. The effect of inbreeding, both of the mare and foal, was negligible. Gestation length shortened as the breeding season progressed: in both breeds, a delay of 1 month in mating corresponded to a decrease of 3 days in the gestation length. According to our results, gestation length decrease as the mare gets older, with the shortest gestation periods when the mare is 10-12 years old, and from this point on, it slowly increases. The gestation period shortens as the 4th or 5th birth approaches, and then gets progressively longer. The range of variation in gestation length due to the number of births to the mare is of 2.9 days for the AB mares, and 2.2 days for SPB mares. The heritability for the gestation length for AB and the SPB breeds was 0.2, with a repeatability of 0.36 and 0.37, for SPB and AB breeds, respectively. With the data from both breeds, and using a classical approach, the response to selection was estimated if mares with extreme gestation lengths were culled, i.e. lengths which are under 310 days, or over 360 days. According to our results, in the case of SPB, a decrease of 14-45% would occur in the number of extreme gestation lengths, while in the AB breed, this value would decrease from 2 to 39%.  相似文献

Background

The Black Forest Draught horse (BFDH) is an endangered German coldblood breed with its origin in the area of the Black Forest in South Germany. In this retrospective study, the influence of the inbreeding coefficient on foaling rates was investigated using records from ten breeding seasons. Due to the small population size of BFDH, the level of inbreeding is increasing and may have an effect on foaling rates.The data of the present study included all coverings reported for 1024 BFDH mares in the years 2001–2009. These mares were covered by 32 BFDH stallions from the State Stud Marbach. Data from 4534 estrus cycles was used to calculate per cycle foaling rate (CFR). Pedigree data contained all studbook data up to the foundation of the breed as early as 1836. The level of inbreeding of the mare, stallion and expected foal along with other systematic effects on CFR were analysed using a generalized linear mixed model approach. Stallion was employed as a random effect. Systematic fixed effects were month of mating, mating type, age of the mare and stallion, reproductive status of the mare and stallion line of the mare. Inbreeding coefficients of the stallion, mare and expected foal were modelled as linear covariates.

Results

The average CFR was 40.9%. The mean inbreeding coefficients of the mares, stallions and expected foals were 7.46, 7.70 and 9.66%. Mating type, age of the mare, reproductive status of the mare and stallion line of the mare had a significant effect.

Conclusions

The results showed that the mating type, stallion line of the mare, sire, age and reproductive status of the mare exerted the largest influences on CFR in BFDH. Inbreeding coefficients of the stallion, mare and expected foal were not significantly related with CFR.

Semen quality, mare status and mare management during estrus will have the greatest impact on pregnancy rates when breeding mares with frozen semen. If semen quality is not optimal, mare selection and reproductive management are crucial in determining the outcome. In addition to mare selection, client communication is a key factor in a frozen semen program. Old maiden mares and problem mares should be monitored for normal cyclicity and all, except young maidens, should have at least a uterine culture and cytology performed. Mares with positive bacterial cultures and cytologies should be treated at least three consecutive days when in estrus with the proper antibiotic. With frozen semen, timing the ovulation is highly desirable in order to reduce the interval between breeding and ovulation. The use of ovulation inducing agents such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or the GnRH analogue, deslorelin, are critical components to accurately time the insemination with frozen semen. Most hCG treated mares ovulate 48h post-treatment (12-72h) while most deslorelin (Ovuplant) treated mares ovulate 36-42h post-treatment. However, mares bred more than once during the breeding cycle appear to have a slight but consistent increase in pregnancy rate compared to mares bred only once pre- or post-ovulation. In addition, the "capacitation-like" changes inflicted on the sperm during the process of freezing and thawing appear to be responsible for the shorter longevity of cryopreserved sperm. Therefore, breeding closer to ovulation should increase the fertility for most stallions with frozen semen. Recent evidence would suggest that breeding close to the uterotubal junction increases the sperm numbers in the oviduct increasing the chances of pregnancy. Post-breeding examinations aid in determining ovulation and uterine fluid accumulations so that post-breeding therapies can be instituted if needed. Average pregnancy rates per cycle of mares bred with frozen semen are between 30 and 40% with a wide range between sires. Stallion and mare status are major factors in determining the success of frozen semen inseminations. Pregnancy rates are lower for barren and old maiden mares as well as those mares treated for uterine infections during the same cycle of the insemination. To maximize fertility with frozen semen, a careful selection of the stallions and mares, with proper client communication is critical. Dedication and commitment of mare owner and inseminator will have the most significant impact on the pregnancy rates.  相似文献

The mare is seasonally polyestrus, having an anovulatory period during the short light days of late fall and early winter, and beginning to ovulate as the days become longer during the winter. The complete estrus cycle is typically about 3 weeks, with 5 to 7 days of estrus and approximately 2 weeks of diestrus. When a mare lives within the natural social structure of the horse, i.e. a family band with several adult mares and one or more stallions, estrus is characterized by repeatedly approaching the stallion, frequent urination, deviating the tail away from the perineum, and standing still with the hind limbs spread apart. Diestrus is characterized by avoidance of an approaching stallion, and aggression toward the stallion, such as squealing, striking, and kicking, if he persists in attempting to court the diestrus mare. However, mares and stallions with long-term social relationships will often rest together, graze together and groom each other, all without sexual interactions. Hormonally, estrous behavior in the mare is initiated by estradiol that is secreted by the follicle, while estrous behavior is suppressed by progesterone, secreted by the corpus luteum. Mares are unusual among the ungulates in that they periodically exhibit estrous behavior during the anovulatory period. This is probably due to the release of estrogenic steroids secreted by the adrenal cortex. The display of sexual behavior by the mare throughout the year is thought to facilitate maintenance of the horse's social structure, in which the male remains with a group of females year round, in contrast with most ungulates in which the females and males only come together during the mating season.  相似文献

In order to investigate the factors affecting the reproduction efficiency of Arab breeding mares in Tunisia, breeding data corresponding to 2340 mated cycles, over 5 years (from 2000 to 2004), from 555 mares offspring of 50 sires and bred with 17 stallions were analysed using a multivariate logistic regression. We chose logit link function and binomial distribution and we used log-likelihood-ratio (LL) and Wald tests (X2 Wald) to test the mean values. The factors of variation included in the model were the year, the stallion, the age of the mare at mating, the sire and the category of the mare. Logistic regression results showed that age and sire affected both the overall conception rate and the first-cycle conception rate of the mares whilst category and stallion influenced only the overall conception rate. To our knowledge, this is the first study showing that the sire of the mare can affect both the first-cycle conception rate and the overall conception rate of the mares.  相似文献

A horse family in which a recombination occurred in the chromosome region coding for the serological specificities of the ELA complex and those of the A blood group system of a mare was further analysed by mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and Southern blot hybridization. This family consisted of a stallion, a mare and five full sibs. The stallion and the mare were heterozygous for internationally recognized ELA specificities while only the mare was heterozygous for the A blood group system. MLR between all members of the family confirmed that the stallion possessed two different ELA haplotypes and suggested that recombination in the mare occurred outside the segment delimited by the ELA-A locus and the MLR region. DNA samples from all individuals were investigated by Southern blot analysis using three restriction enzymes (EcoRI, HindIII or TaqI), three human HLA probes (one of class I cDNA and two of class II probes), one cDNA (DR beta) and one genomic (DQ alpha). Class I and class II restriction fragments of the mare segregated in accordance to the ELA specificities and thus clearly confirming that the crossing-over did not occur between the ELA-A gene and the class I, class II region nor between DR beta and DQ alpha subsets. The A blood group genetic determinants would thus be situated outside the ELA region defined by class I and class II genes.  相似文献

Introduction

Health care utilization is an important step to disease management, providing opportunities for prevention and treatment. Anderson’s Health Behavior Model has defined utilization by need, predisposing, and enabling determinants. We hypothesize that need, predisposing, and enabling, highlighting behavioral factors are associated with utilization in Argentina.

Methods

We performed a logistic regression analysis of the 2005 and 2009 Argentinean Survey of Risk Factors, a cohort of 41,392 and 34,732 individuals, to explore the association between need, enabling, predisposing, and behavioral factors to blood pressure measurement in the last year.

Results

In the 2005 cohort, blood pressure measurement was associated with perception of health, insurance coverage, basic needs met, and income. Additionally, female sex, civil state, household type, older age groups, education, and alcohol use were associated with utilization. The 2009 cohort showed similar associations with only minor differences between the models.

Conclusions

We explored the association between utilization of clinical preventive services with need, enabling, predisposing, and behavioral factors. While predisposing and need determinants are associated with utilization, enabling factors such as insurance coverage provides an area for public intervention. These are important findings where policies should be focused to improve utilization of preventive services in Argentina.  相似文献

Diagnosis and treatment of endometritis in the mare has been controversial and mostly empirical. The lack or inability of researchers to establish or develop a model that can serve as a standard or control makes this area of equine reproduction difficult to address scientifically. However, major advances have been made, particularly with the demonstration of the importance of uterine contractility in the elimination of bacteria, fluid, and inflammatory products from the uterus after breeding. This review provides a historical perspective of what has been done, and where we are now, in the approach to the diagnosis and therapy of endometritis in the mare.  相似文献

The use of assisted reproductive techniques (ART) has helped owners to produce offspring from valuable mares that were considered infertile using standard breeding techniques. Before referring a mare for an ART, the practitioner should be able to identify the underlying cause of subfertility of the mare. The objective of this review is to provide information regarding embryo transfer, oocyte transfer and intracytoplasmic sperm injection, the three most common ART used in equine practice. Knowing the complexity as well as the risks of these techniques, enables practitioners to refer a subfertile mare to the least complex and most appropriate and successful ART that can overcome specific causes of infertility.  相似文献

An automatic device that uses the prolonged elevated position of the tail as an index of parturition in the cow and the mare has been tested, and the tail movements which accompany eliminative behavior and other events have been recorded in pre-partum vs mid-gestation animals.During the last week of pregnancy in the cow and the last 48 h in the mare, the mean elevated positions of the tail, corresponding to urination and defecation, increased from 19.5 to 27.6 from 16.4 to 17.4 per day in the mare.The presence of tail movements lasting more than 2 min in duration occurred at the time of parturition in the cow and the mare, but were also detected occasionally from 2 to 5 days before parturition.The use of a warning system which screens out all tail movements lasting less than 150 sec was found suitable for monitoring the time of parturition, especially in the mare. In this species, the number of false alarms occurred only one or two times during the 48 h preceeding parturition, while in the cow such movements lasting less than 240 sec will eliminate the alarms related to fetal kinesis or uterine contractions rather than parturition.  相似文献

Jugular blood samples were obtained from 8 mares at 5- and/or 20-min intervals for 2 to 5 days during various phases of the oestrous cycle for plasma LH determination. An episodic release pattern was observed in 1 of 3 mares sampled during the ovulatory period. One mare had one secretory burst and the other mare had several periods of fluctuating plasma LH concentration. During dioestrus, episodic secretions were observed in 2 mares sampled 11 to 13 days before and, in 1 mare, 9 days after ovulation. During the 2 to 5-day period before ovulation, episodic secretion was not observed (3 mares) but plasma LH concentrations fluctuated as much as 6 ng/ml during a period of 3--4 h. Daily plasma samples were obtained form 10 mares (1--8 oestrous cycles/mare) during which 22 single, 18 double and 2 luteal-phase ovulations occurred. Dioestrous ovulations were accompanied by small increases in plasma LH (1--4 ng/ml), but many similar increases in LH were not accompanied by ovulation. No significant differences in secretory patterns were observed between single and multiple ovulations. In one mare, 4 ovulations occurred in the presence of a prolonged luteal phase; 3 were accompanied by increasing LH concentrations and the other occurred when LH was at a low concentration.  相似文献

Very limited information is available on the breeding performance of Icelandic stallions, let alone the effect that management practices may have had on such performance. As an extensively kept, largely genetically isolated breed of horse it provides a good model for the study of factors that affect reproductive performance without the additional complication of selective breeding, infectious infertility and breed effect. A survey was conducted using 27 Icelandic stallions covering 1590 mares within the normal Icelandic breeding system (May to September). During the season, stallions cover mares within three periods of time, each period being of a similar length (average 35.5 days). During period 1, mares are covered in hand and at pasture. During periods 2 and 3, all mares are covered at pasture. The overall fertility rate for Icelandic stallions was calculated. The effect of a range of variables on fertility was investigated statistically using a number of models in an attempt to minimise the effect of confounding factors. An overall adjusted fertility rate for Icelandic stallions of 67.7% was obtained. The following factors were shown to have a significant effect on fertility: age of mare (P<0.001), training level of stallion (P<0.05) and method of breeding (P<0.05). For some individual stallions reproductive status of the mare also had a significant (P<0.001) effect. Many of these factors have been observed to effect FR in other more intensively managed equine populations. However, the less dramatic detrimental effect of age and the lack of a significant effect of mare reproductive status in most stallions suggests that infertility problems are less evident in Icelandic mares, possibly due to less emphasis on selection for athletic performance and the accepted culling of subfertile stock.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) has repeatedly been found to influence mate choice of vertebrates, with MHC‐dissimilar mates typically being preferred over MHC‐similar mates. We used horses (Equus caballus) to test whether MHC matching also affects male investment into ejaculates after short exposure to a female. Semen characteristics varied much among stallions. Controlling for this variance with a full‐factorial within‐subject experimental design, we found that a short exposure to an MHC‐dissimilar mare enhanced male plasma testosterone and led to ejaculates with elevated sperm numbers as compared to exposure to an MHC‐similar mare. Sperm velocity seemed not affected by the treatment. Overall genetic similarity between stallions and mares (determined from polymorphic microsatellites on 20 different chromosomes) played no significant role here. The MHC type of the teaser mare also affected characteristics of cold‐stored sperm after 24 and 48 hr. As expected from ejaculate economics, sperm viability was elevated after exposure to an MHC‐dissimilar mare. However, oxidative stress and the percentage of sperm with a high DNA fragmentation were mostly increased after exposure to an MHC‐dissimilar mare, depending also on whether the teaser mare was in oestrous or not. We conclude that males can quickly adjust ejaculate quality relative to a female's MHC, and that this male reaction to the social environment can also affect important characteristics of cold‐stored semen.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify possible predisposing factors for candiduria in intensive care unit (ICU) patients from Hospital das Clínicas, Universidade Federal de Goiás, Goiania, Brazil, during one year. Urine samples from 153 ICU patients were obtained by catheterization on admission day and every seven days. Data such as sex, age, antifungal therapy, and variables as antibiotics, underlying diseases or comorbid conditions and stay in the hospital, were collected from patients who had at least one urine culture that yielded > 10(3) yeast colonies/ml. Candiduria was recovered in 68 patients and the commonest predisposing factors were antibiotic therapy (100%) and indwelling urinary catheter (92.6%). The percentage of Candida spp. isolation increased during the extended periods in which patients remained in the ICU. C. albicans was isolated in 69.1%, and the other species non-albicans as C. glabrata, C. kefyr, C. parapsilosis, C. famata, C. guilliermondii, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis were isolated in lower percentage. The high frequency of candiduria and the possible predisposing factors found in ICU patients show that candiduria surveillance should be performed to help reducing nosocomial infections.  相似文献
