This paper gives an overview of behavioral studies on the color and polarization vision of the Japanese yellow swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus. We focus on indoor experiments on foraging individuals. Butterflies trained to visit a disk of certain color correctly select that color among various other colors and/or shades of gray. Correct selection persists under colored illumination, but is systematically shifted by background colors, indicating color constancy and simultaneous color contrast. While their eyes contain six classes of spectral receptors, their wavelength discrimination performance indicates that their color vision is tetrachromatic. P. xuthus innately prefers brighter targets, but can be trained to select dimmer ones under certain conditions. Butterflies trained to a dark red stimulus select an orange disk presented on a bright gray background over one on dark gray. The former probably appears darker to them, indicating brightness contrast. P. xuthus has a strong innate preference for vertically polarized light, but the selection of polarized light changes depending on the intensity of simultaneously presented unpolarized light. Discrimination of polarization also depends on background intensity. Similarities between brightness and polarization vision suggest that P. xuthus perceive polarization angle as brightness, such that vertical polarization appears brighter than horizontal polarization.  相似文献

Necessary and sufficient spectral conditions are presented for Von Kries chromatic adaptation to give color constancy. Von-Kries-invariant reflectance spectra are computed for illuminant spectral power distributions that are arbitrary linear combinations of the first three daylight phases. Experiments are suggested to test models of color constancy using computed spectra (either exact or approximate) within the illuminant-invariant framework.  相似文献

Vision is important for postural control as is shown by the Romberg quotient (RQ): with eyes closed, postural instability increases relative to eyes open (RQ = 2). Yet while fixating at far distance, postural stability is similar with eyes open and eyes closed (RQ = 1). Postural stability can be better with both eyes viewing than one eye, but such effect is not consistent among healthy subjects. The first goal of the study is to test the RQ as a function of distance for children with convergent versus divergent strabismus. The second goal is to test whether vision from two eyes relative to vision from one eye provides better postural stability. Thirteen children with divergent strabismus and eleven with convergent strabismus participated in this study. Posturtography was done with the Techno concept device. Experiment 1, four conditions: fixation at 40 cm and at 200 cm both with eyes open and eyes covered (evaluation of RQ). Experiment 2, six conditions: fixation at 40 cm and at 200 cm, with both eyes viewing or under monocular vision (dominant and non-dominant eye). For convergent strabismus, the groups mean value of RQ was 1.3 at near and 0.94 at far distance; for divergent, it was 1.06 at near and 1.68 at far. For all children, the surface of body sway was significantly smaller under both eyes viewing than monocular viewing (either eye). Increased RQ value at near for convergent and at far for divergent strabismus is attributed to the influence of the default strabismus angle and to better use of ocular motor signals. Vision with the two eyes improves postural control for both viewing distances and for both types of strabismus. Such benefit can be due to complementary mechanisms: larger visual field, better quality of fixation and vergence angle due to the use of visual inputs from both eyes.  相似文献

The monoclonal antibody CSAT has been reported to perturb the adhesion of chick embryo cells to their substratum (Neff et al. [19]). Evidence is presented here that the antigen recognized by this monoclonal antibody is comprised of three membrane glycoproteins. The antigen is released from cells with non-ionic detergent and purified by monoclonal antibody affinity chromatography. When analysed by SDS-PAGE under non-reducing conditions, the antigen resolves into three components of apparent molecular weights 160 000 (band 1), 135000 (band 2), and 110 000 (band 3). Following reduction of each component, bands 1 and 2 migrate at slightly lower apparent molecular weights, while band 3 migrates at a higher apparent molecular weight, suggesting that band 3 has an internal disulfide bond. All three bands differ from one another as determined by peptide mapping and by immunologic cross-reactivity. It is postulated that the three glycoproteins function as a complex that plays a central role in cell-substratum adhesion.  相似文献

Our earlier psychophysical work has shown that colour and motion are not perceived at the same time, with colour leading motion by about 50-100 ms. In pursuing this work, we thought it would be interesting to use a more complex colour stimulus, one in which the wavelength composition of the light reflected or emitted from surfaces changes continually, without entailing a change in the perceived colour (colour constancy). We therefore used a Mondrian figure--an abstract multi-coloured scene with no recognizable objects--against which squares (either red or green) moved up and down, changing colour from red to green in various phase differences with the change in direction of motion. The red and green squares changed continually in their spectral characteristics, as did every other patch on the Mondrian. The results showed that colour is still perceived before motion, by about 80 ms.  相似文献

When the illumination on a scene changes, so do the visual signals elicited by that scene. In spite of these changes, the objects within a scene tend to remain constant in their apparent colour. We start this review by discussing the psychophysical procedures that have been used to quantify colour constancy. The transformation imposed on the visual signals by a change in illumination dictates what the visual system must 'undo' to achieve constancy. The problem is mathematically underdetermined, and can be solved only by exploiting regularities of the visual world. The last decade has seen a substantial increase in our knowledge of such regularities as technical advances have made it possible to make empirical measurements of large numbers of environmental scenes and illuminants. This review provides a taxonomy of models of human colour constancy based first on the assumptions they make about how the inverse transformation might be simplified, and second, on how the parameters of the inverse transformation might be set by elements of a complex scene. Candidate algorithms for human colour constancy are represented graphically and pictorially, and the availability and utility of an accurate estimate of the illuminant is discussed. Throughout this review, we consider both the information that is, in principle, available and empirical assessments of what information the visual system actually uses. In the final section we discuss where in our visual systems these computations might be implemented.  相似文献

In contradistinction to conventional wisdom, we propose that retinal image slip of a visual scene (optokinetic pattern, OP) does not constitute the only crucial input for visually induced percepts of self-motion (vection). Instead, the hypothesis is investigated that there are three input factors: 1) OP retinal image slip, 2) motion of the ocular orbital shadows across the retinae, and 3) smooth pursuit eye movements (efference copy). To test this hypothesis, we visually induced percepts of sinusoidal rotatory self-motion (circular vection, CV) in the absence of vestibular stimulation. Subjects were presented with three concurrent stimuli: a large visual OP, a fixation point to be pursued with the eyes (both projected in superposition on a semi-circular screen), and a dark window frame placed close to the eyes to create artificial visual field boundaries that simulate ocular orbital rim boundary shadows, but which could be moved across the retinae independent from eye movements. In different combinations these stimuli were independently moved or kept stationary. When moved together (horizontally and sinusoidally around the subject's head), they did so in precise temporal synchrony at 0.05 Hz. The results show that the occurrence of CV requires retinal slip of the OP and/or relative motion between the orbital boundary shadows and the OP. On the other hand, CV does not develop when the two retinal slip signals equal each other (no relative motion) and concur with pursuit eye movements (as it is the case, e.g., when we follow with the eyes the motion of a target on a stationary visual scene). The findings were formalized in terms of a simulation model. In the model two signals coding relative motion between OP and head are fused and fed into the mechanism for CV, a visuo-oculomotor one, derived from OP retinal slip and eye movement efference copy, and a purely visual signal of relative motion between the orbital rims (head) and the OP. The latter signal is also used, together with a version of the oculomotor efference copy, for a mechanism that suppresses CV at a later stage of processing in conditions in which the retinal slip signals are self-generated by smooth pursuit eye movements.  相似文献

Variance in iris color is related to the incidence of several important ocular diseases, including uveal melanoma and age-related macular degeneration. The purposes of this study were to determine the quantity and the types of melanin in cultured human uveal melanocytes in relation to the iris color. Sixty-one cell cultures of pure uveal melanocytes were isolated from donor eyes with various iris colors. The amount of eumelanin (EM) and pheomelanin (PM) of these cells was measured by chemical degradation and microanalytical high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. The total amount of melanin was measured by both microanalytical methods and spectrophotometry. Total melanin content, measured by HPLC and spectrophotometry, correlated well with r = 0.872 (P < 0.0001). The quantity and type of melanin in iridal and choroidal melanocytes showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). When cells became senescent, the levels of EM, PM and total melanin were significantly increased. In both growing and senescent melanocytes, the quantity and type of melanin were closely correlated to the iris color. In cells from eyes with dark-colored irides (dark brown and brown), the amount of EM, the ratio of EM/PM and total melanin were significantly greater than that from eyes with light-colored irides (hazel, green, yellow-brown and blue) (P < 0.0001). The quantity of PM in uveal melanocytes from eyes with light-colored irides was slightly greater than that from dark-colored irides, although not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The present study shows that iris color is determined by both the quantity and the type of melanin in uveal melanocytes. These results suggest a possibility that uveal melanin in eyes with dark-colored irides is eumelanic at the surface and acts as an antioxidant while that in eyes with light-colored irides exposes pheomelanic core and behaves as a pro-oxidant.  相似文献

In 1982, Horace Barlow considered the question of human trichromacy in the context of information theory: according to the Sampling Theorem, three types of receptors covering the visible spectrum (400-700 nm) might be sufficient to reconstruct the color signal. Although Barlow was led to reject the direct application of the Sampling Theorem to explain color dimensionality, the theoretical framework offers a fresh point of view for analyzing the color system in conjunction with the physical characteristics of natural color signals. This review aims to illustrate that if the strict mathematical reconstruction (as implied by the Sampling Theorem) is replaced by a pragmatic approximation of color signals, then trichromacy, with its subsequent opponent-color process, could be regarded as an optimization of color constancy abilities in the spectral environment of primates. Higher dimension systems (tetrachromacy) found in other species can also serve the purpose of color constancy optimization in environments where color signals exhibit a finer spectral structure.  相似文献

Color constancy was investigated in behavioral training experiments on colors ranging from blue to yellow, located in the color space close to Planck's locus representing the main changes in natural skylight. Two individual goldfish were trained to peck at a test field of medium hue out of a series of 13-15 yellowish and bluish test fields presented simultaneously on a black background. During training the tank in which the fish were swimming freely was illuminated with white light. Correct choices were rewarded with food. During the tests differently saturated yellow or blue illumination was used. The degree of color constancy was inferred from the choice behavior under these illuminations. Perfect color constancy was found up to a certain degree of saturation of the colored light. Beyond this level test fields other than the training test field were chosen, indicating imperfect color constancy. Color constancy was quantified by applying color metrics on the basis of the goldfish cone sensitivity functions.  相似文献

Two kinds of constancy underlie the everyday perception of surface colour: constancy under changes in illuminant and constancy under changes in surface position. Classically, these two constancies seem to place conflicting demands on the visual system: to both take into account the region surrounding a surface and also discount it. It is shown here, however, that the ability of observers to make surface-colour matches across simultaneous changes in test-surface position and illuminant in computer-generated 'Mondrian' patterns is almost as good as across changes in illuminant alone. Performance was no poorer when the surfaces surrounding the test surface were permuted, or when information from a potential comparison surface, the one with the highest luminance, was suppressed. Computer simulations of cone-photoreceptor activity showed that a reliable cue for making surface-colour matches in all experimental conditions was provided by the ratios of cone excitations between the test surfaces and a spatial average over the whole pattern.  相似文献

We studied postural reactions evoked by vibrational stimulation of the anterior tibial and posterior neck muscles under three different conditions of visual control (in a darkened room): (i) upon standing with the eyes open, EO, with perception of a stationary 2D image of the visual environment on the screen, (ii) under conditions of perception of a 3D virtual visual environment, VVE, and (iii) upon standing with the eyes closed, EC. Vibrational stimulation of both muscle groups evoked forward inclinations of the body; average values of the latter under control conditions (EC) were close to each other. The VVE mimicking a real visual environment possessed two planes, a mobile foreground one, whose shifts were programmed in such a manner that they correlated with oscillations of the body, and a stable background one. The tested subjects were asked to use the latter as a visual reference. Under VVE conditions, the amplitude of postural reactions depended on the feedback coefficient between the body movements and shifts of the VVE foreground and the direction of this feedback (its synphase or antiphase, sph or aph, mode). Postural responses at the feedback sph direction became greater with increase in the feedback coefficient (i.e., with increases in the magnitude of shifts of the VVE foreground) and reached values typical of standing under EC conditions. In the case of the aph type of feedback, the responses changed insignificantly. If the lowest feedback coefficient, 1.0, was used, the postural responses tended to decrease, as compared with those under EO conditions. The difference between the values observed at the sph and aph types of feedback with similar coefficients was manifested more intensely in the case of stimulation of the neck muscles. This fact shows that postural reactions triggered by afferent signals from the neck muscles depend more considerably on the ongoing visual afferentation.  相似文献

Prolonged inspection of an adapting simulus changes the appearance of a subsequent test stimulus. There are five distinct viewing conditions under which such 'after-effects' may be generated. There are MON-MON (inspect with one eye, same eye), BIN-BIN (inspect with both eyes, test both eyes), BIN-MON (inspect with both eyes, test only one eye), MON-BIN (inspect with one eye, test with both) and TRANSFER (inpect with one eye, test with the other eye). A model based upon the assumption of the linearly additive effects of adaptation generated in 'dominance classes' or cortical units that are driven either by one eye, or the other eye, or by either or both eyes together, is described. This model generates predictions concerning the expected ralative magnitudes of after-effects generated under the five viewing modes described above, and experiments are described that confirm these predictions. The model can be extended to gaenerate predictions about other experimental conditions. A more complex version of the model is consistent with electrophysiologically derived estimates of the proportion of cortical units in each dominance class.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   We examined the extent and causes of band-related leg injuries in an Australian passerine, the Bell Miner ( Manorina melanophrys ). Eight percent of banded birds exhibited leg injuries, and most were birds with two plastic color bands on a tarsus. Leg injuries typically followed the accumulation of shed tarsal scales under the color bands. Color bands used on Bell Miners were tighter on the tarsus than the metal band and also tighter than the color bands used on Superb Fairy-wrens ( Malurus cyaneus ), a commonly banded species with no reported leg injuries. The tendency for scales to accumulate under two plastic color bands appeared to be influenced by the diameter of a band relative to the size of a bird's tarsus (with looser bands less likely to cause accumulation) and the material used to make the band (with smoother surfaces less likely to cause accumulation). Celluloid color bands had rougher internal surfaces than either Darvic or metal bands. In addition, both celluloid and Darvic color bands generated static electricity capable of attracting tarsal scales. Scales that accumulated under bands provided an environment where potentially harmful fungi became established, potentially contributing to the severity of leg injuries. Our results suggest that, when selecting an appropriate band size for a bird, the diameter of the tarsus at its midpoint should occupy only between 60% and 65% of the internal diameter of the band and, when possible, a single, bicolored, anodized aluminum alloy band should be used instead of multiple plastic color bands.  相似文献

The deep sea is the largest habitat on earth. Its three great faunal environments--the twilight mesopelagic zone, the dark bathypelagic zone and the vast flat expanses of the benthic habitat--are home to a rich fauna of vertebrates and invertebrates. In the mesopelagic zone (150-1000 m), the down-welling daylight creates an extended scene that becomes increasingly dimmer and bluer with depth. The available daylight also originates increasingly from vertically above, and bioluminescent point-source flashes, well contrasted against the dim background daylight, become increasingly visible. In the bathypelagic zone below 1000 m no daylight remains, and the scene becomes entirely dominated by point-like bioluminescence. This changing nature of visual scenes with depth--from extended source to point source--has had a profound effect on the designs of deep-sea eyes, both optically and neurally, a fact that until recently was not fully appreciated. Recent measurements of the sensitivity and spatial resolution of deep-sea eyes--particularly from the camera eyes of fishes and cephalopods and the compound eyes of crustaceans--reveal that ocular designs are well matched to the nature of the visual scene at any given depth. This match between eye design and visual scene is the subject of this review. The greatest variation in eye design is found in the mesopelagic zone, where dim down-welling daylight and bio-luminescent point sources may be visible simultaneously. Some mesopelagic eyes rely on spatial and temporal summation to increase sensitivity to a dim extended scene, while others sacrifice this sensitivity to localise pinpoints of bright bioluminescence. Yet other eyes have retinal regions separately specialised for each type of light. In the bathypelagic zone, eyes generally get smaller and therefore less sensitive to point sources with increasing depth. In fishes, this insensitivity, combined with surprisingly high spatial resolution, is very well adapted to the detection and localisation of point-source bioluminescence at ecologically meaningful distances. At all depths, the eyes of animals active on and over the nutrient-rich sea floor are generally larger than the eyes of pelagic species. In fishes, the retinal ganglion cells are also frequently arranged in a horizontal visual streak, an adaptation for viewing the wide flat horizon of the sea floor, and all animals living there. These and many other aspects of light and vision in the deep sea are reviewed in support of the following conclusion: it is not only the intensity of light at different depths, but also its distribution in space, which has been a major force in the evolution of deep-sea vision.  相似文献

Vision plays a major role in many spiders, being involved in prey hunting, orientation or substrate choice, among others. In Misumena vatia, which experiences morphological color changes, vision has been reported to be involved in substrate color matching. Electrophysiological evidence reveals that at least two types of photoreceptors are present in this species, but these data are not backed up by morphological evidence. This work analyzes the functional structure of the eyes of this spider and relates it to its color-changing abilities. A broad superposition of the visual field of the different eyes was observed, even between binocular regions of principal and secondary eyes. The frontal space is simultaneously analyzed by four eyes. This superposition supports the integration of the visual information provided by the different eye types. The mobile retina of the principal eyes of this spider is organized in three layers of three different types of rhabdoms. The third and deepest layer is composed by just one large rhabdom surrounded by dark screening pigments that limit the light entry. The three pairs of secondary eyes have all a single layer of rhabdoms. Our findings provide strong support for an involvement of the visual system in color matching in this spider.  相似文献

Color constancy is the term given to the ability to recognize the color of objects correctly under different conditions of illumination. For this purpose the visual system must determine the character of the illumination, introduce a correction for it into the spectal composition of the light received from the object, and hence recreate the true color of its surface. Behavioral experiments on fish showed that they possess constant color vision of objects. Electrophysiological experiments on ganglion cells of the color type showed that the simplest mechanisms of correction for illumination are found at the retinal level. An investigation of model algorithms providing for color constancy showed thatthe presence of color vision makes it much easier to recognize the three-dimensional form of objects. This fact compels a reexamination of established views regarding the place and role of color vision in functions of the animal visual system as a whole.Institute for Problems in Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. When we search for a target in a crowded visual scene, we often use the distinguishing features of the target, such as color or shape, to guide our attention and eye movements. To investigate the neural mechanisms of feature-based attention, we simultaneously recorded neural responses in the frontal eye field (FEF) and area V4 while monkeys performed a visual search task. The responses of cells in both areas were modulated by feature attention, independent of spatial attention, and the magnitude of response enhancement was inversely correlated with the number of saccades needed to find the target. However, an analysis of the latency of sensory and attentional influences on responses suggested that V4 provides bottom-up sensory information about stimulus features, whereas the FEF provides a top-down attentional bias toward target features that modulates sensory processing in V4 and that could be used to guide the eyes to a searched-for target.  相似文献

Variation in flower color, particularly polymorphism, in which two or more different flower color phenotypes occur in the same population or species, may be affected or maintained by mechanisms that depend on pollinators. Furthermore, variation in floral display may affect pollinator response and plant reproductive success through changes in pollinator visitation and availability of compatible pollen. To asses if flower color polymorphism and floral display influences pollinator preferences and movements within and among plants and fitness-related variables we used the self-incompatible species Cosmos bipinnatus Cav. (Asteraceae), a model system with single-locus flower color polymorphism that comprises three morphs: white (recessive homozygous), pink (heterozygous co-dominate), and purple (dominant homozygous) flowers. We measured the preferences of pollinators for each morph and constancy index for each pollinator species, pollination visitation rate, floral traits, and female fitness measures. Flower color morphs differed in floral trait measures and seed production. Pollinators foraged nonrandomly with respect to flower color. The most frequent morph, the pink morph, was the most visited and pollinators exhibited the highest constancy for this morph. Moreover, this morph exhibited the highest female fitness. Pollinators responded strongly to floral display size, while probed more capitulums from plants with large total display sizes, they left a great proportion of them unvisited. Furthermore, total pollinator visitation showed a positive relation with female fitness. Results suggest that although pollinators preferred the heterozygous morph, they alternate indiscriminately among morphs making this polymorphism stable.  相似文献

Pollinator-mediated reproductive isolation is often a principal factor in determining the rate of hybridization between plant species. Pollinator preference and constancy can reduce interspecific pollen transfer between otherwise interfertile, coflowering species. The importance of this ethological isolation can be assessed by comparing the strength of preference and constancy of pollinators in contact sites that differ in the frequency of hybrid individuals. We observed visitation by hummingbirds and hawkmoths in natural single-species patches and artificial mixed-species arrays in two Ipomopsis aggregata/I. tenuituba contact sites-one with few hybrids, and one in which hybrids are abundant. Pollinator preference and constancy were stronger at the low-frequency hybrid site, especially for hawkmoths (Hyles lineata). Hawkmoths at the low-frequency hybrid site showed significant preference and constancy for I. tenuituba, while at the high-frequency site hawkmoths visited both species equally. One hypothesis that might explain these differences in hawkmoth foraging is that warmer nights at the low-frequency hybrid site allow for nocturnal foraging where the light-colored corollas of I. tenuituba have a visibility advantage. These differences in hawkmoth behavior might in turn affect hummingbirds differently at the two sites, through changes in nectar resources, leading to greater pollinator-mediated isolation at the low-frequency hybrid site. Our results suggest that differences in pollinator behaviors between sites can have both direct and indirect effects on hybridization rates between plant species.  相似文献
