The invasion of Llyn Coron in North Wales by the American immigrant Dugesia tigrina resulted in the almost entire displacement of the native Polycelis tenuis and P. nigra populations. Because competition for food is the most important factor controlling and regulating populations of British lake-dwelling triclads, the diets of the invasive and native triclads in the lake were examined in an attempt to explain the successful invasion.A serological technique, the precipitin test, identified the gut contents of field-collected triclads. Niche breadth, electivity and niche overlap indices were used in analysis of the data. A broad food niche was recorded for all the triclad species. Oligochaetes predominated in the diet of D. tigrina followed by Asellus and chironomids, in almost equal proportions, snails and caddisflies, with mayflies scarcely eaten. Both Polycelis species fed heavily on oligochaetes followed by Asellus. P. tenuis ate slightly higher proportions of chironomids and caddisflies than snails and mayflies, whilst P. nigra consumed similar proportions of these four prey taxa. Gammarus, scarce in Llyn Coron, and cladocerans were not eaten by the Polycelis species and by only a few D. tigrina.To-date there has been no apparent shift in the diet of the Polycelis species as a consequence of the invasion by D. tigrina. In the absence of any evidence for the partitioning of food on the basis of prey size or condition, the considerable overlap in the diets of D. tigrina and the Polycelis species suggests the potential for severe inter-specific competition for food. The superior exploitation by D. tigrina of the available food resource requires explanation.  相似文献

Cohorts of Branchiura sowerbyi were reared at different temperatures and initial population densities in order to obtain data suitable for the interpretation of population dynamics in field populations. Percent hatching from cocoons reaches its maximum at 25 °C and decreases towards lower and higher temperatures. Embryonic development time, TE, was measured and the relative threshold temperature, 10 °C, calculated by extrapolation. The degree day requirement for embryo development is 195 °C d. The time of first cocoon laying (Tgm) was observed and the ratio TE/Tgm was seen to fit with that of other tubificid species cultured so far. Embryo mortality is rather high, while worm mortality is low or very low. Fecundity increases from 15 to 20 °C but decreases at 25 °C. A mathematical model for the simulation of population densities with four size-stage compartments is suggested. It could be used for the optimization of worm uptake (simulated as stage specific mortality) in mass cultures reared for the production of Branchiura, to be used as food for fish fingerlings.  相似文献

Temperature data are presented from the littoral zones of two lakes in North Wales, Llyn Coron and Llyn Dinas. Recording, mainly on a continuous basis, was over a two year period. Despite their different situations, the lakes had similar temperature regimes. Regional weather factors were of greater importance than local variations. However, some differences were present, especially during the summer months. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the temperature relationships of Nemoura avicularis Morton (Plecoptera) and Leptophlebia vespertina (L.) (Ephemeroptera), common species in Llyn Dinas but absent from Llyn Coron. Aspects considered included nymphal temperature tolerance and the effect of temperature on egg development and emergence. From the background of the results, it was concluded that the differences in temperature regime between the two lakes were insufficient to explain the absence of the two species from Llyn Coron.  相似文献

Two allopatric populations of Polycelis nigra (MuUller), one from lowland productive Llyn Maelog on Anglesey and the other from upland unproductive Llyn Dinas in Snowdonia, were each subjected to competition in the laboratory from the same Polycelis tenuis Ijima population from productive Llyn Llygeirian, also on Anglesey, where it coexists with P. nigra. The triclads were fed weekly on crushed Asellus (Isopoda) and their biomasses calculated monthly over five months. Results suggest that sympatric P. nigra are more successful competitors against P. tenuis than allopatric P. nigra. The data also suggest that the inferior competitive ability of allopatric P. nigra may be a consequence of both exploitative and interference competition. Coexistence of P. nigra with P. tenuis appears to increase P. nigra's tolerance to environmental stress; the current experiments and observations during several decades of research have indicated poorer survival and growth in allopatric than sympatric populations.  相似文献

The ecology of epipelic algae on the marginal sediments of five Welsh lakes was studied over an annual cycle. The lakes, Llydaw, Cwellyn, Padarn, Maelog and Coron ranged from very oligotrophic to nutrient-rich. Attention was focussed on chlamydomonad flagellates, diatoms, blue-green algae and euglenoids and the different proportions of these in algae in the epipelon of lakes of contrasting water quality. A total of 75 algal taxa was found in the five lakes, 25 were species of volvocalean flagellates. Mean annual population density of these flagellates differed by an order of magnitude between the lakes. The greatest population density was recorded for Chlamydomonas anticontata Schiller in nutrient-rich Llyn Maelog. Twenty species of pennate diatoms were recorded frequently in the epipelon. In the nutrient-rich lakes, Maelog and Coron, pennate diatoms were dominant on the sediments, where they exhibited population maxima in spring and autumn. Increase in numbers of epipelic diatoms was recorded when silica concentrations were minimum in the overlying lake waters. Navicula hungarica Grun. achieved the maximum population density, 260 000 cells · cm?2. Euglenoids formed large epipelic populations during late-summer and autumn in these nutrient-rich lakes. Blue-green algae were more important, proportionally, in the nutrient-poor mountain lakes, which had sediments of higher organic content. Chlamydomonads were the major algal component of the epipelon in the mountain lakes, Llydaw and Cwellyn, where the sediments were characterized by larger particle size, and higher organic content. In the nutrient-rich lakes, where the sediments had higher calcium content, chlamydomonads formed significant populations only during spring and summer, when nutrient levels were minimal in the overlying lakewaters.  相似文献

This comparative study explores how low temperatures affect the mortality and growth of first generation hatchery-reared progeny of subarctic populations of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) and European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.). Replicate fish groups where held under simulated natural light regimes (70°N) at three constant temperatures (1, 3 and 6°C). The mortality of Arctic charr was low (≤1.4%) at all temperature treatments, whereas the mortality of whitefish increased with decreasing temperature from 6% at 6°C to 33% at 1°C. The Arctic charr exhibited higher growth rates than whitefish at all three temperature regimes. All groups of Arctic charr increased in weight, whereas whitefish held at 1°C did not gain weight throughout the experimental period of 133 days. Arctic charr exhibited a large intraspecific variability in growth leading to large variations in size-structure, whereas whitefish in contrast showed very homogenous growth and size-structure patterns; a dissimilarity probably related to species-specific differences in antagonistic behaviour. Evidently, Arctic charr are more cold water adapted than whitefish and are able to maintain growth at extremely low temperatures. Arctic charr thus appear to be the most suitable species for aquaculture at low water temperatures.  相似文献

This paper uses energy relations to compare asexual and sexualreproduction and fission and egg production in freshwater triclads.Egg production is more efficient at converting food to reproductiveenergy but fission is more efficient at converting this to offspringFission is therefore favored in ecological circumstances wherefood is always limiting and egg production in ecological circumstanceswhere food is not alway s limiting In principle sex is the leastefficient method of all the reproductive strategies yet parthenogenesis and self-fertilization are rare. We cannot be sure, however to what extent the metabolic losses incurred by spermproduction in hermaphrodites are made good by iesorption ofthe unused sperm denved from the mate. Furthermore, possibleshort-term and long-term balancing advantages of the sexualstrategy can be identified in triclads. We also consider how, in those triclads which take the fissionoption, the body biomass should be divided between the headand tail in order to maximize the fitness of the system. Ifmortality is independent of size, a midway fission plane shouldbe favored However strong size-dependent mortality occurs duringspates in the streams in which fissiparous triclads are found,"pushing" the optimum fission plane tailwards.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The distribution of twenty species of Naididae found in seventeen lakes in North Wales and Shropshire is described. Fewer species were observed in the mountain lakes in Snowdonia in comparison to the more productive lakes of Anglesey and Shropshire.
Substrate was an important factor influencing the distribution of naids within lakes, A small number of sexually mature individuals was found in more productive lakes in the summer and autumn months. Sexually mature individuals of Stylaria lacustris were cultured in the laboratory; the population doubled its numbers, by asexual reproduction, in 12 days at 15°C. In Llyn Coron a natural population of S. lacustris doubled its numbers in 40 days. The gut contents of S. lacustris consisted of periphyton.  相似文献

Summary Pterostichus oblongopunctatus belongs to the type of spring breeding carabids with adult hibernation. Ovarian maturation is under the control of photoperiod: the females need a change of day length to mature. The first step of egg maturation (previtellogenesis) is bound to short day, the second step (vitellogenesis) to long day.The short day effect is achieved almost only at temperatures of 10 to 15°C; it is completely suppressed by 20°.The males mature under very different photoperiods and temperatures, but long day diminishes the percentage of mature males slightly, as well as does the higher temperature of 20°C in short day as compared with 15°C.Simulation of climatic conditions as experienced by the beetles from autumn throughout winter until spring in the laboratory showed that a short span of favourable temperatures at short day as experienced in nature in autumn allows the females to accomplish the short day development. But this maturation effect is still more diminished the longer temperatures below 5°C act on the beetles. Following that, a second period of temperatures between 10–15°C must restore the short day maturation effect if full maturity shall be gained in the following long day.The beetles are able to store reserve materials under long day at 20°C. After such a period they are able to have a normal previtellogenesis in spite of a severe shortage of food during short day. These experiments indicate that the failure in short day development outside the temperature range of 10–15°C is not a matter of an especially well balanced over-all metabolism in this favourable temperature range. It seems rather that hormonal systems involved in the short day phase of oogenesis act only within this span of temperature.Supportet by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.  相似文献

Periodic colony fision has been characteristic ofHutterite society for more than 100 years. From 1878–1970 fission occurred an average of every 14–15 years when colonies attained a size of 166 persons. Emigrating groups were comprised of35%–55% of the mother colony's population. Between founding and fission, daughter populations grew at an average rate of 4.3% per year. Over time, fissioning size and length of fission cycles decreased, but the size of new daughter colonies and rate of population growth remained constant through 1960. Demographic analysis suggested that the model of fission followed by the Hutterites has not always focused on even division of the mother colony into two equal-sized groups, but rather that they have had a fairly constant conceptual model of the size that new colonies should be. As fissioning size decreased over time the proportionate size of new colonies increased, maintaining the absolute size nearly constant since 1900. These findings suggest a number of questions for further investigation.  相似文献

Summary Piona exigua Viets is a predaceous freshwater mite that can potentially affect the population densities of its cladoceran prey. As part of a study of the effect of Piona exigua on its prey populations we measured the effects of water temperature and prey density on the lifespan, age at first reproduction and per capita egg production of adult female mites. Mites were raised in the laboratory at five prey (Ceriodaphnia, Daphnia) densities (5, 15, 30, 60, 120/l) at 15° C and at four temperatures (10, 15, 18, 22° C) at c. 60 prey/l. In response to increased food level, mites increased the number of eggs laid to reach a maximum at 60 prey/l, the rate at which they were laid increased and the pre-reproductive period was shorter. Low temperatures prolonged the pre-reproductive period. At temperatures above 10° C, food level and temperature had more influence on the timing of reproductive events (growth rate, oviposition rate, age at first reproduction) than on the size of females at first reproduction. When temperatures exceed 10° C and food levels exceed 5 prey/l the major scope for reproductive plasticity in Piona lies in the timing and duration of egg production.  相似文献

Dugesia bengalensis was described by Kawakatsu (Kawakatsu et al., 1983) from specimens collected in West Bengal. We have been studying populations from many different localities in Santiniketan and adjoining areas of West Bengal and can provide additional biological information. The species is hermaphroditic, and its breeding season was found to occur usually between October and March when the winter temperature falls below 25 °C. Outside of the breeding season, D. bengalensis is capable of asexual reproduction by binary fission (Mahapatra et al., 1987).Development of the reproductive organs appeared to be from neoblasts and other mesenchymal cells and, therefore, to be like that typical of other triclads with the exception that some of the neoblasts used for the reproductive tissue appeared to be derived from the intestinal region (Ghosh, 1988; cf. Teshirogi, 1986).During copulation, the partners were oriented in the same direction and not in a head-to-tail position as has been reported (Hyman, 1945) for some planarians. The oval, stalked cocoons were laid in marshy places, and during the period of summer (usually from April to June) they lay dormant in the sandy soil until the onset of the monsoon rains. Then, typically three or four months after they were laid, the cocoons hatched to yield three or four young, a remarkably low number for freshwater triclads (cf Ball & Reynoldson, 1981).  相似文献

The effects of temperature on the life history characteristics of two populations of the polychaete Dinophilus gyrociliatus, one from Ravenna (northern Adriatic Sea) and the other from Genoa (Ligurian Sea), were investigated. The temperatures tested (6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 °C) cover a wider range than those prevailing in the natural environment. In the populations studied there are broad differences in timing of development and reproduction. At 6 °C, the adults of both populations survive for a long time but they are unable to reproduce. At 12 °C, only the animals from Ravenna manage to reproduce. At the higher temperatures (18, 24 and 30 °C), the development of the animals belonging to the Genoa strain is faster than that of the Ravenna strain. The duration of the various phases of the biological cycle is very similar in both populations, but that from Ravenna exhibits greater tolerance of low temperatures, slower development rate and lower development threshold temperature than does the Genoa population. Temperature and geographical origin also have strong effects on reproductive characteristics. The highest fecundity values were observed at 12 °C in the Ravenna strain, the lowest at 30 °C in both groups. At 18 °C, the Genoa population is more fecund than the Ravenna one, while the situation is reversed at 12 °C. The smallest ovigerous capsules are produced at 30 °C, the biggest at 12 °C, and the Genoa females produce larger capsules than do the females from Ravenna, except at 12 °C. The size of both male and female eggs varies in relation to temperature, the smallest female eggs generally being laid at the higher temperatures. At all the temperatures tested, the sex ratio of the Ravenna population is higher than that of the Genoa population. In the Ravenna strain, temperature has no effect on the sex ratio, while in the Genoa strain the sex ratio at 24 °C is lower than at 18 and 30 °C. Comparison of the two populations at the same temperature reveals considerable differences in the characteristics of their respective life histories and sex ratios. It is very likely that the extreme selectivity of the harbor environments has favored the fragmentation of the species into differentiated populations that have adapted to the conditions prevailing in the different localities.  相似文献

We describe the serotonergic and cholinergic nervous system of the asexually reproducing acoel Convolutriloba longifissura Bartolomaeus & Balzer, 1997 by means of immunohistochemistry, conventional histochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Immunocytochemical staining for serotonin revealed neurons in the brain, in a pair of ventral main longitudinal cords, in two pairs of smaller dorsal longitudinal nerve cords, and in a submuscular nerve net. The brain comprises a ventral-anterior commissure and a less intensely stained dorsal commissure joined together by connectives into a three-ringed scaffold from which the longitudinal nerves extend. We followed the regeneration of the serotonergic part of the nervous system up to the second day after fission. Within this time period, the offspring reestablished bilateral symmetry in the nervous system and developed full motor control. The presence of aminergic cell bodies associated with the main lateral nerve cords of C. longifissura shows that the acoelan nervous system is more similar to that of other platyhelminths (triclads, rhabditophorans) than previously assumed. The presence of serotonergic cell bodies along the main nerve cord correlates with the capacity for asexual reproduction via fissioning. We also describe the single fission mode of C. hastifera Winsor 1990, which brings the modes of asexual reproduction employed by members of the Convolutrilobinae to three.  相似文献

European Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations inhabit rivers from northern Portugal to northern Norway across a wide spectrum of environmental variability. To address whether single physical factors might lead to genetic divergence of isolated populations, we compared the digestive performances total digestibility, relative nitrogen digestibility, passage time, and digestion rate (g dry matter · h–1) — of northern (Scotland) and southern (Asturias, northern Spain) populations at three temperature regimes (5, 12, and 20° C). Total dry matter digestibilities increased directly with temperature but were similar for both populations at each of the three trials. Relative nitrogen digestibility did not differ between populations nor among temperature regimes. In contrast, passage time was significantly longer for low-than for high-latitude fish at both 5 and 20° C. When the percentage of food digested and the passage time were integrated as digestion rates (food digested per unit time), a significant population × temperature interaction consistent with a genotype × environment interaction was detected in addition to the population and temperature effects. This implies that not only is the digestive performance of the high-latitude population higher throughout the range of temperatures examined, but moreover the difference is reinforced at high temperatures, where the digestion rate of high-latitude fish was 1.6 times greater. Taken together, these two results provide preliminary evidence for countergradient variation in digestive rates of salmonids in response to variation in growth opportunity. The data support our previous work on the same two populations showing differences in growth rates, and underlie one of the possible mechnisms leading to more rapid growth of the high-latitude fish when both populations are reared in a common environment.  相似文献

Life history traits are presented for the sexual species (Artemia tunisiana) and for parthenogenetic diploid and tetraploid strainsA. parthenogenetica reared at 15 °, 24 ° and 29.5 °C.In laboratory cultures, we present evidence that the seasonal appearance of the sexualArtemia tunisiana (the dominant winter-spring population), and of two parthenogenetic populations ofArtemia (the dominant spring-summer populations) in certain Spanish saltworks is controlled by temperature through its effect on reproductive and survival traits. Minimum and maximum reproductive output and survival for the sexual and parthenogenetic populations, respectively, occurred at a typical temperature (24 °C) of the late-spring season when the sexual population is replaced by parthenogenetic forms. Furthermore, the high production and hatchability of cysts from the sexual population at low temperatures (15 °C), and of the parthenogenetic populations at middle temperature (24 °C), indicate the role of dormancy as an adaptation regulating seasonal occurrence.  相似文献

Abstract

A model of group fissioning, applied by Mange (1964) to a Hutterite population and by Chagnon (1975) to an Amazonian Indian population, is applied to the “Nebraska” Amish community in Central Pennsylvania. Genealogical data were collected on 228 living, married individuals and their known ancestors in two new churches resulting from the fission of a church in 1978. The acrimonious fissioning of the church produced increased levels of intrachurch genealogical relatedness in the two new churches formed, as compared to the level of relatedness in the original church, with a greater increase for male/male relatedness than for female/female relatedness. This general increase in relatedness, documented for three human populations and also for fissioning groups of rhesus macaques, conforms to predictions from kin selection theory.  相似文献

The adaptive response of the Adh locus to different temperatures was determined in an experimental population with a stabilized gene pool in order to confirm the conclusions reached in a previous paper (Pieragostini et al., Genetica 56: 27–37, 1981) using as experimental material a laboratory population in which heterosis and strong interaction between loci were present.By sampling a stable lab population, three cage populations were constructed, heterozygous at the Adh locus and genetically identical but reared at different temperatures (P 18 °C, P 25 °C and P 28 °C). On these populations we studied the dynamics of Adh allele frequencies and of five metric traits up to the fifth generation of caging. The most interesting result is represented by the differences between P 28 °C and the other two populations (P 25 °C and P 18 °C). In particular P 25 °C and P 18 °C show a strong similarity with the original population both in Adh allele frequency and relationship between Adh genotype and the respective metric phenotype; this is not the case for P28 °C which differed from the original population and the other two newly founded ones not only in Adh allele frequencies but even in gene arrangements.Comparing these results with those obtained in the previous work it can be concluded that Adh frequency variations can be a side effect of the evolutionary pattern of the populations which in turn depends on the initial genetic composition.  相似文献

Diadromus collaris (Gravenhorst)(Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) has been recordedin many parts of the world as a major pupalendoparasitoid of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera:Plutellidae). Experiments were conducted tocompare reproductive compatibility andperformance as affected by temperature betweentwo geographic populations of D.collaris, one from Hangzhou, Zhejiang and theother from Lishan, Taiwan, China. The numbersand sex ratio of progeny in all possiblecrosses and backcrosses were similar to thoseobtained within each of the populations, demonstrating complete reproductivecompatibility between the two populations. Thetwo populations showed similar responses totemperature with respect to development time, adult longevity and number of host pupaeparasitized per female. However, the populationfrom Hangzhou achieved higher rates of survivalfrom larva to adult emergence at hightemperatures and had higher proportions offemale progeny at some temperatures, than thepopulation from Lishan. The Hangzhou populationachieved higher intrinsic rates of increase atall temperatures tested from 15 to33.5 °C, and the differences weresignificant at 30 and 32 °C. Thedifferences between the two populations inability to survive high temperatures mayreflect their adaptation to local climates. Thesignificance of the intraspecific variationsrevealed is discussed with regard to the use ofgeographic populations of the parasitoid in thebiological control of P. xylostella.  相似文献

Branchiura sowerbyi Beddard was probably introduced to Britain with exotic plants consigned to botanic gardens. The British populations occur mainly in artificially warmed habitats such as lily ponds in botanic gardens and power station effluents but a few are found at natural temperatures.
Branchiura completed its life cycle in about a year both in the river Avon, Wiltshire, at natural temperatures and in the warm effluent from a power station discharging into the river Thames. In a worm culture maintained at natural temperatures the rate of cocoon production reached a peak in summer and was closely related to temperature.
In the laboratory it was found that the optimum temperature for cocoon laying in mature worms, also growth in sexually immature worms, was near 25°C. The optimum temperature for growth in sexually mature worms, however, was lower (10°C in the Avon population and 15°C in the Thames population). It followed that at 20°–25°C the growth of sexually mature worms was probably depressed by the high rate of cocoon production.  相似文献
