The karyotype of Saguinus labiatus labiatus was determined by the Giemsa-banding technique on leukocytes cultured from 10 marmosets. The diploid chromosome number (2n = 46) was the same and the chromosome complement similar to other marmosets of genus Saguinus. Small karyotypic differences were found between S. l. labiatus and white-lipped marmosets (Saguinus fuscicollis) in the size of the X chromosome and in the banding pattern of one pair of metacentric chromosomes. A karyotypic variant was detected in 1 S. l. labiatus, characterized by a diploid chromosome number of 45 with balanced autosomal translocation involving two pairs of acrocentric chromosomes (T 16/19).  相似文献

P. carinii infection in red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus), born and maintained in a laboratory breeding colony, was examined by histopathologic examination postmortem. P. carinii cysts were detected in 6 of 10 red-bellied tamarins examined, by using Grocott's, toluidine blue O and immunostaining with avidin-biotin complex using antisera for rat-, simian-, and human-P. carinii. The results obtained from the present studies imply that P. carinii may be an important pathogen in this species.  相似文献

Haematology, coagulation and clinical chemistry data are reported for a group of male and female red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus). The tamarins were juvenile and young adults and were bred in captivity. High mean values for activities of alkaline phosphatase, alanine amino-transferase, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase were noted. The findings are compared with data obtained from other members of the family Callitrichidae.  相似文献

Observations of several aspects of the behavior of the tamarin Saguinus labiatus labiatusin the laboratory are presented. Some patterns of the behavioral repertoire emphasize areas of contrasting pelage;the leg standaccompanied by piloerectiondisplays the orange coloration of the ventrum. Several facial expressions (possibly rare in other species of callitrichid) emphasize the contrast between the white circumbuccal area and the black face. The behavior of three mated pairs was compared. Agonistic and sexual behaviors were rare. Males allogroomed their mates more than females did. Females performed the most scent marking. In two of the three pairs, one animal (the male in one case, the female in the other) determined the amount of contact and proximity between the mates. Experimental introductions of unfamiliar tamarins resulted in small amounts of both amicable and agonistic behavior. The tendency of adults to attack familiar same-sex conspecifics, reported in other callitrichids, was not evident in these experiments, although the presence of the mate stimulated social interaction between unfamiliar tamarins.  相似文献

Callimico goeldii, Saguinus fuscicollis, and S. labiatus are sympatric in northern Bolivia and differ from each other in patterns of spatial and structural use of their environment. C. goeldii has a home range five times larger than that of mixed-species troops of S. fuscicollis and S. labiatus. The larger overlapping home range of C. goeldii allows it to move among Saguinus troops, giving it access to a wide range of different microhabitats. All three species use the most common microhabitat in the area, primary forest with dense understory, more than any other microhabitat type. C. goeldii habitat use varies by season, with bamboo and Heliconia microhabitats used more during the dry season. Each species shows preferences for different height classes: C. goeldii is found almost exclusively in the understory, S. fuscicollis uses the understory and middle canopy, and S. labiatus is found mostly in the middle canopy. These height class preferences are reflected in each species' locomotor styles, with C. goeldii showing the highest rates of vertical clinging and leaping, and S. labiatus showing the highest rates of branch-to-branch leaping and quadrupedal movement. The results suggest that C. goeldii may be restricted to forests with dense understory and a mosaic of other microhabitats. Furthermore, C. goeldii does not appear to use its tegulae for large branch foraging, but rather for vertical clinging and leaping between small vertical supports.  相似文献

A quantitative acoustic analysis of long calls of red-chested moustached tamarins (Saguinus l. labiatus) was undertaken after capture in the primary forest of Northwestern Bolivia, comparing two populations. Two acoustic parameters are statistically significantly different. Acoustic properties distinguishing individual heterogeneity are quite consistent between the groups and completely different from cues separating population variability. As these two study groups were only 27 km apart when trapped, and as no geographical barriers prevented genetic exchanges between them, we assume populational vocal variability comparable to dialects in birds.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of tamarins (Saguinus mystax mystax) under laboratory conditions was evaluated. Fifteen of 20 male-female pairs were fertile and produced 30 live births during an observation period of 3.5 years. Twenty-six breeders (65%) and 12 offspring (40%) more than 3 years old were alive at the termination of the reporting period.  相似文献

This report describes hepatic multiple myelolipoma with severe coelomic edema in a 14-year-old, male red-bellied tamarin (Saguinus labiatus). Multiple small and large nodules were formed in all lobes of the liver. Histopathologically, the nodules comprised mature and normal adipocytes and hematopoietic elements at various ratios that were composed of granulocytic, erythrocytic, and megakaryocytic series in various phases of maturation. All nodules were encapsulated and demarcated hepatocytes around masses. Myelolipoma in the liver is rare, and there are no reports of any cases to date. To our knowledge, this is the first report of hepatic multiple myelolipoma in a red-bellied tamarin.  相似文献

We present the results of a 4-month field investigation of positional behavior, vertical ranging, and species differences in limb proportions and body mass in a mixed-species troop of Saguinus fuscicollis, Saguinus labiatus, and Callimico goeldii in northwestern Brazil. Despite certain similarities in overall positional repertoire, patterns of positional behavior varied significantly between species. Travel in Callimico occurred principally in the lowest levels of the canopy, and was characterized by an exaggerated form of hindlimb-dominated bounding (bounding-hop), and leaping to and from vertical trunks (55.1% of leaps). In contrast, saddle-back tamarins traveled in the lower and middle levels of the canopy, and engaged in a range of leaping behaviors, including stationary leaps (37.3%), acrobatic leaps (31.3%), and trunk-to-trunk leaps (20%). Red-bellied tamarins exploited the highest levels of the arboreal canopy. Travel in this species was dominated by quadrupedal bounding and acrobatic leaps (67% of leaps) that began and ended on thin, flexible supports. Species differences in positional behavior correlated with species differences in limb proportions and locomotor anatomy, and provide a framework for understanding niche partitioning in mixed-species troops of Saguinus and Callimico.  相似文献

A 5-month field study was conducted on red-bellied tamarins,Saguinus labiatus labiatus, in the Pando Department of northern Bolivia. Group sizes ranged from 5 to 10 animals, and each group associated with a group of saddle-backed tamarins,Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli. Members of three groups were trapped and marked and data were collected by radiolocation. The average range size used over 10 days was 19 ha. On average the groups entered about 29% of their range each day and had a mean daily path length of about 1487 m. The groups used a number of different sleeping sites within their ranges. They fed on a variety of different fruits and also on nectar from flowers, resin, and insects. Areas within the home range which were used significantly more than expected were generally those in which one or more of the following existed: a sleeping site, an intergroup encounter site, or a site where the group took shelter during an extended period of heavy rain.  相似文献

A spontaneous outbreak of yersiniosis caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype IIB occurred in a small indoor breeding colony of red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus) during the winter of 1981. Of 35 monkeys at risk 6 died of an acute or subacute infection over a period of 23 days. Clinical signs were anorexia, weakness, listlessness and depression. The disease was characterized by focal necrosis of the liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, ulcerative enteritis, and the presence of colonies of Gram-negative bacilli in the lesions. Y. pseudotuberculosis was isolated from the liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes and kidney but not from the blood, lung or intestine. Contaminated food was believed to be the source of infection.  相似文献

The reproductive performance of three species of Callitrichidae housed under identical conditions, including relatively spacious caging and visual screening, was compared. The three species were Callithrix jacchus, Saguinus fuscicollis, and Saguinus oedipus. Callithrix jacchus was the most reliable breeder, with the lowest percentage of stillborn and the highest post-weaning survival. While the reproductive performance of S oedipus was better than that generally reported for other colonies, the reproductive performance of the Saguinus species was still poorer than that of C jacchus. The two Saguinus species did not differ significantly in either percentage of stillborn or post-weaning survival. None of the species showed infertility due to lactation, but the mean inter-birth interval was significantly longer for S oedipus than for either C jacchus or S fuscicollis.  相似文献

Captive Callitrichids frequently suffer a fatal wasting disease, wasting marmoset syndrome (WMS), of unexplained cause. This paper describes studies on the erythrocytes from animals in a breeding colony of tamarins (Saguinus labiatus), in which deaths from anaemia and wasting were occurring, to seek evidence for biochemical changes which could lead to oxidative damage and premature cell lysis. In only one animal of 33 studied did the red blood cell lipids show an increased susceptibility to oxidative damage. This animal, with some degree of certainty, could be diagnosed as having WMS. It was concluded that evidence for a primary deficiency of antioxidants as a cause of unexplained deaths, or WMS, in the colony could not at present be substantiated.  相似文献

Traditional techniques used to capture New World monkeys, such as net capture, can induce high levels of acute stress detrimental to welfare. Alternatively, training nonhuman animals via operant conditioning to voluntarily participate in husbandry and/or veterinary practices is accepted as a humane process that can reduce stress and improve welfare. This study details the use of operant conditioning using positive reinforcement training (PRT) and target training to train a family of 5 captive red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus) in a wildlife park to voluntarily enter a transportation box and remain calm for 1 min after 54 training sessions. Observations of 2 unrelated net-capture processes provided measures of locomotion and vocalizations as indicators of stress behavior that were compared with those of the trained tamarins. Net-captured monkeys exhibited rapid erratic locomotion and emitted long, high-frequency vocalizations during capture whereas the trained tamarins exhibited minimal locomotion and emitted only 4 brief vocalizations (root mean square 35 dB) during capture. This indicates that the use of PRT considerably reduced potential for stress and improved welfare during the capture and containment of the tamarins.  相似文献

Biopterin, 6-hydroxymethyl-pterin, isoxanthopterin, neopterin and, pterin were quantified in stress-free collected spontaneous morning urine samples from Callithrix jacchus, Saguinus fuscicollis, Saguinus labiatus, Saimiri sciureus, Presbytis entellus, Cercopithecus albogularis, Cercocebus torquatus, Macaca fascicularis, Hylobates concolor, Pongo pygmaeus, and Gorilla gorilla. In most species, biopterin was the most frequent urinary pteridine followed by neopterin. Sex differences in biopterin and neopterin excretion were observed in Gorilla gorilla and Pongo pygmaeus. Pterin and isoxanthopterin were only present in minor concentrations. 6-hydroxymethyl-pterin was barely detectable and not present in the urine of Saguinus labiatus, Saimiri sciureus, and both male Gorilla gorilla and Pongo pygmaeus.  相似文献

The remarkable X-linked colour vision polymorphism observed in many New World primates is thought to be maintained by balancing selection. Behavioural tests support a hypothesis of heterozygote advantage, as heterozygous females (with trichromatic vision) exhibit foraging benefits over homozygous females and males (with dichromatic vision) when detecting ripe fruit on a background of leaves. Whilst most studies to date have examined the functional relevance of polymorphic colour vision in the context of foraging behaviour, alternative hypotheses proposed to explain the polymorphism have remained unexplored. In this study we examine colour vision polymorphism, social group composition and breeding success in wild red-bellied tamarins Saguinus labiatus. We find that the association of males and females within tamarin social groups is non-random with respect to colour vision genotype, with identified mating partners having the greatest allelic diversity. The observed distribution of alleles may be driven by inbreeding avoidance and implies an important new mechanism for maintaining colour vision polymorphism. This study also provides the first preliminary evidence that wild trichromatic females may have increased fitness compared with dichromatic counterparts, as measured by breeding success and longevity.  相似文献

The provision of novel objects allows one to probe for behavioural differences among species. This is particularly relevant when studying species that form mixed-species groups, as divergent responses may provide clues to the advantages that individuals gain from associating. We compared the responsiveness to novel objects in captive single- and mixed-species groups of saddleback (Saguinus fuscicollis) and red-bellied (Saguinus labiatus) tamarins to determine the influence of a congener. We tested groups with novel objects placed near the top, the middle, and on the floor of their enclosures and measured latency to approach and touch them. We tested predictions related to differences in lifestyle patterns under natural conditions. As we predicted, S.labiatus, which usually occur at a higher mean height in the forest than their congeners, responded to objects placed near the top of the enclosure significantly quicker in both single- and mixed-species groups. S. fuscicollis responded to objects placed on the floor quicker, and in mixed-species groups S. fuscicollis approached them before S. labiatus did. There were specific differences in median touch–approach time (T-A): Saguinus fuscicollis had a shorter T-A time than that of S. labiatus, which can be related to their manipulative foraging style. Reaction times decreased in mixed-species trials for both species, suggesting that the reaction of one species may effect the congener. Both species may benefit through association, though the dominance of Saguinus labiatus over S. fuscicollis may limit the advantages to S. fuscicollis. Over all our study supports the idea that cross-specific social facilitation is an important consequence of mixed-species groups of Saguinus.  相似文献

The callitrichid primates, Callithrix jacchus jacchus (the marmoset) and Saguinus labiatus (the tamarin) were inoculated with infective larvae of Brugia malayi and B. pahangi. Microfilaraemia at low levels developed in 3 out of 4 C.j. jacchus infected with B. malayi and living or dead adult worms found in all 4. Only one of 4 C.j. jacchus became microfilaraemic (mf + ve) when given B. pahangi and adults were found in two. Of 4 S. labiatus given B. pahangi one became very lightly mf + ve and adults were found in 3. It is concluded that these animals are not suitable hosts for chemotherapeutic experiments.  相似文献

Examination of the lectotype and paralectotypes of Pachytriton labiatus ( Unterstein, 1930 ) from southern China revealed that the specimens do not represent a member of Pachytriton, but are identical with a newt of another genus, Paramesotriton ermizhaoi Wu et al., 2009 also described from southern China. We suggest that Pac. labiatus should be transferred to Paramesotriton as a senior synonym of Par. ermizhaoi. We compared the morphology of the northeastern and southwestern groups of newts previously called Pac. "labiatus" with special reference to age and sexual variations. As a result, we confirmed that the two groups are differentiated sufficiently to be treated as different species. In this report, we revive the name Pac. granulosus Chang, 1933 to refer to the northeastern group of Pac. "labiatus," and at the same time, describe a new species representing the southwestern group.  相似文献

本文报导了无斑肥螈(Pachytriton labiatus)皮肤的显微结构和特点。其皮肤的基本结构与其他有尾两栖类相似,体背、腹部位的皮肤厚度和结构有一定差异,皮肤中有丰富的微血管,在表皮和真皮相接处分布密集,背部分布密度明显大于腹部。皮肤腺体较少,缺乏色素细胞,角质化程度较低,表皮细胞层数少,界限不清。表皮下的毛细血管常向表皮突起,突起处表皮细胞层数减少,形成皮肤的血气呼吸屏障,以保证皮肤有效的呼吸作用的完成。  相似文献
