Parental influence on early development in the European sea bass   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fertilization, survival during incubation and hatching were highly correlated and strongly influenced by the female parent and the interaction between both parents of the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. A single significant male effect was detected on hatching and may reflect a genetic component determining survival from fertilization to hatching. Egg size and total length of 8-day-old larvae (age of first feeding) were also subjected to the influence of the female but the two parameters were not correlated. A significant interaction between both parents was also observed for length of larvae. The survival rates were significantly correlated in two consecutive years indicating that reproductive performances may be repeatable. Although the effect of the male parent on early sea bass development is shown for the first time, it seems that most of the parental effects on early performance in this species are due to females even when hormonal stimulations are performed at very close prematurational stages of oocyte development.  相似文献

Under natural environmental conditions, sea bass feeding rhythms are nocturnal in winter and diurnal during the rest of the year. Increasing water temperature from 22 to 28°C or decreasing it to 16°C had little effect on the dual feeding behaviour of sea bass. An 8:16 LD photoperiod with low temperature or 16:8 LD with high temperature also failed to change the diurnal/ nocturnal behaviour of sea bass. In conclusion, sea bass feeding rhythms did not follow passively the manipulated environmental factors simulating summer and winter conditions in the laboratory, which suggests an endogenous circannual control of the seasonal phase inversion.  相似文献

Between-year variation in bass Dicentrarchus labrax year-class strength in southern British waters is investigated. Mean spring-summer seawater temperature in the year of birth was significantly positively correlated with both the level of summer recruitment of the 0 + group to the estuarine nurseries and subsequent recruitment of III + fish to the adult population. Spectral analysis of the temperature-compensated time series showed that a statistically significant proportion of the variation not attributable to temperature was periodic at 0–33 cycles year−1. Therefore, a simple, three-parameter model, combining a linear relationship between temperature and abundance and a second-order autoregressive model can be used to describe and predict variation in relative adult YCS. Bass remain for their first 3 years within their estuarine nursery areas. As I + fish were observed in Southampton water to cannibalize the 0 + group, it is suggested that strong year-classes suppress recruitment for the next 2 years even if the temperature is suitable to promote a strong year-class. Cyclic variation in recruitment caused by intraspecific interactions, particularly cannibalism, may be a feature of other marine fish that use estuaries as nursery areas.  相似文献

Groups of sexually undifferentiated sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were fed with the androgen 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) during sex differentiation. MT treatment increased males from 79±3% in the controls (the usual 3:1 male:female sex ratio of cultured sea bass) to 100±0%, implying that in the treated groups one out of each five resulting males was a masculinized female (neomale). Thirteen males from the MT treated groups were taken as the parental generation and their sperm used to individually fertilize a pool of eggs from unrelated females. The probability of having at least one neomale was 95% and most probably two or three of the males used were neomales. The offspring from each family were reared separately under the same environmental conditions. Samples were taken at 11 and 15 months of age, during and after sex differentiation, respectively. Results showed that females predominated among the larger fish whereas males and undifferentiated fish predominated among the smaller ones. Intersexes exhibited an intermediate size. All fish with a body length smaller than 12 cm were undifferentiated. These results suggest that sex differentiation is more dependent on length than on age. At 15 months, sex ratios were male-biased in all families, except one (females ranged from 5 to 50%) and only two families had sex ratios not significantly different from 1:1, suggesting that the mechanism of sex determination in the sea bass is not of a XX/XY or ZW/ZZ type since no family exhibited a female-biased progeny, as would be expected from both types. Results support the hypothesis that factors other than genetic, i.e., environmental, may act epigenetically on the sex determination mechanisms of sea bass, as has been demonstrated in other fishes.  相似文献

Computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA) was used to characterize the motility of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax spermatozoa and to study the effect of several physicochemical variables and heavy metals on sperm swimming performance. Duration of sperm motility in sea bass was very short (<50 s). During the first 20 s all the motility variables measured remained approximately constant, the velocity and linearity of the movement being maximum during this period, while both variables decreased sharply later. While slight variations in pH did not significantly modify sperm swimming performance, changes in osmolality affected all the measured motility variables. Two of the heavy metals tested, Cu2+ and Pb2+, did not affect sperm motility when the activating media contained up to 100 ppm of the metal salts. In contrast, Hg2+ modified the morphology of post-swimming spermatozoa at 0·4–1 ppm (sperm dilution rate 1:39) and completely arrested sperm motility at concentrations as low as 0·1 ppm (sperm dilution rate 1:2500). Assuming a covalent binding to sperm cells, this revealed a finite number of c. 10 million Hg2+ binding sites per spermatozoon. Complementary results using demembranated spermatozoa suggested that the main target of HgCl2 would be located in the plasma membrane and that HgCl2 would inhibit water channels, hence preventing sperm motility.  相似文献

Tail beat frequency of sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) (23.5 ± 0·5 cm, LT ), swimming at the front of a school was significantly higher than when swimming at the rear, for all water velocities tested from 14·8 to 32 cm s−1. The logarithm of oxygen consumption rate, and the tail beat frequency of solitary swimming sea bass (28·8 ± 0·4 cm, LT ), were each correlated linearly with swimming speed, and also with one another. The tail beat frequency of individual fish was 9–14% lower when at the rear of a school than when at the front, corresponding to a 9–23% reduction in oxygen consumption rate.  相似文献

A whole suite of parameters is likely to influence the behavior and performance of individuals as adults, including correlations between phenotypic traits or an individual's developmental context. Here, we ask the question whether behavior and physical performance traits are correlated and how early life parameters such as birth weight, litter size, and growth can influence these traits as measured during adulthood. We studied 486 captive gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) and measured two behavioral traits and two performance traits potentially involved in two functions: exploration behavior with pull strength and agitation score with bite force. We checked for the existence of behavioral consistency in behaviors and explored correlations between behavior, performance, morphology. We analyzed the effect of birth weight, growth, and litter size, while controlling for age, sex, and body weight. Behavior and performance were not correlated with one another, but were both influenced by age. Growth rate had a positive effect on adult morphology, and birth weight significantly affected emergence latency and bite force. Grip strength was not directly affected by early life traits, but bite performance and exploration behavior were impacted by birth weight. This study shows how early life parameters impact personality and performance.  相似文献

This study reports titration of vitamin E levels in the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) using high-pressure liquid chromatography. The first part of the work is devoted to vitamin E detection in: (1) plasma of maturing females and males characterized by different body sizes; (2) seminal fluid and eggs; and (3) developing embryos of sea bass fed with vitamin E. In the second part of the study, variations of vitamin E levels during larval development are analyzed. The results show a direct correlation between plasma vitamin E content and body size for both adult male and female sea bass. High vitamin E levels were found in seminal fluid, in eggs before and after fertilization, and in embryos during development and at hatching, whereas vitamin E level was low in dead embryos and in embryos with limited survival. During larval development, the vitamin E content decreased slowly but steadily during the first four days of larval growth; subsequently, it progressively increased from day 9 to day 40. In teratogenic larvae, vitamin E content was significantly higher than in normal larvae. This study provides evidence on how vitamin E exerts an antioxidant defense in sea bass reproduction.  相似文献

Prostaglandin series E (PGE) production by mixed populations of isolated sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax testicular cells was measured after culture at 20° C in L-15 for up to 24 h in the absence or presence of arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or gonadotropin (hCG). AA stimulated a significant dose- and time-dependent increase in PGE production. EPA stimulated PGE production only during the first 6 h although levels were 26·4% those induced with AA; DHA reduced PGE production. Although hCG alone had no effect, it enhanced AA-induced PGE formation and suppressed EPA-induced PGE production. These results suggest that essential PUFAs modulate significantly testicular PGE production in vitro and therefore may have important effects on steroidogenesis and spermiation in the male European sea bass.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the onset of first maturity in sea bass   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Oocyte development was aborted and full maturity did not occur in virgin female sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax unless they remained in water above 10° C during the main period of gonad development. There was no difference in the condition factors of females with high or low I G values in March, which indicates that retarded gonadal development was not necessarily due to poor body condition or nutritional state. It is suggested that the extended duration of the adolescent phase of female bass around southern Britain is a response to their environment, rather than an intrinsic aspect of the species'biology.  相似文献

We studied dietary shifts in the early life stages of gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum, a dominant forage species in North American reservoirs. Larval fish and zooplankton samples were collected weekly during spring in Sardis Reservoir, Mississippi, USA. Diet and prey electivity data suggested the existence of three dietary niches during early life stages: microzooplankton (larvae ≤10 mm total length) in which microzooplankters comprised over 90% by number; crustacean zooplankton (larvae 11–25 mm) in which larval gizzard shad consumed substantial numbers of crustacean zooplankton; and microplankton (larvae >25 mm) in which gizzard shad shifted to filtering protozoans, rotifers, and phytoplankton. There was a high overlap (84%) between the diet of larval gizzard shad and crappies Pomoxis spp. during early May. Larval gizzard shad can potentially reduce microzooplankton density through predation, then shift to crustacean zooplankton and drive their density to decline, then revert to filtration of microzooplankton and exploit phytoplankton. Although, gizzard shad have the ability to influence trophic interactions in reservoir ecosystems, their influence may sometimes be masked by the intensity of bottom-up and top-down effects, as well as population and community interactions. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The in vivo and in vitro potency of native and modified forms of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) to release luteotropic hormone (LH) was studied in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax in particular the hypothalamic fish‐specific sea bream GnRH form (sbGnRH) and the general mesoencephalic form chicken GnRH‐II (cGnRH‐II). The potencies of the natives and their analogs (GnRHas) were referred to that of [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐mGnRHa (LHRHa) at equivalent doses. Analogs of the native peptides [D‐Arg6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II, [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II, [D‐Trp6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH and [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH were effective in inducing in vivo LH release (at 15 µg kg?1 body mass), exhibiting longer lasting activity than their corresponding native forms. Injection of sbGnRH and cGnRH‐II provoked a small but significant peak of circulating LH at 1·5 h after treatment (a.t.) decreasing down to basal levels at 4 h a.t. [D‐Arg6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II, [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II and [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐mGnRHa evoked a higher and a more sustained elevation of LH, peaking at 12 h a.t. and returning to basal levels between 48 and 72 h a.t. [D‐Trp6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH and [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH also induced a significant surge of LH in plasma at 4 h a.t. turning to the basal levels at 24 h a.t. These rises, however, were of less amplitude and duration than the observed after treatment with cGnRH‐II analogs and [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐mGnRHa. The in vitro stimulation of dispersed pituitary cells with the different native and modified forms of GnRH resulted in a dose‐dependent increase in the quantity of LH released at 24 h a.t. [D‐Arg6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II and [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II induced the highest response of LH in vitro release followed by salmon GnRH (sGnRH), [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐mGnRHa and [D‐Trp6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH. The lowest activity was exhibited by sbGnRH. Collectively, the in vitro biological activity (compared by their EC50) can be ordered as follows: [D‐Arg6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II > [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐cGnRH‐II > sGnRH > [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐mGnRHa > [D‐Trp6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH > [D‐Ala6, Pro9Net]‐sbGnRH > cGnRH‐II > sbGnRH.  相似文献

Parents can have profound effects on offspring fitness. Little, however, is known about the mechanisms through which parental genetic variation influences offspring physiology in natural systems. White‐throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis, WTSP) exist in two genetic morphs, tan and white, controlled by a large polymorphic supergene. Morphs mate disassortatively, resulting in two pair types: tan male × white female (T × W) pairs, which provide biparental care and white male × tan female (W × T) pairs, which provide female‐biased care. To investigate how parental composition impacts offspring, we performed RNA‐seq on whole blood of WTSP nestlings sampled from nests of both pair types. Parental pair type had a large effect on nestling gene expression, with 881 genes differentially expressed (DE) and seven correlated gene coexpression modules. The DE genes and modules expressed at higher levels in W × T nests with female‐biased parental care function in metabolism and stress‐related pathways resulting from the overrepresentation of proteolysis and stress‐response genes (e.g., SOD2, NR3C1). These results show that parental genotypes and/or associated behaviours influence nestling physiology, and highlight avenues of further research investigating the ultimate implications for the maintenance of this polymorphism. Nestlings also exhibited morph‐specific gene expression, with 92 differentially expressed genes, comprising immunity genes and genes encompassed by the supergene. Remarkably, we identified the same regulatory hub genes in these blood‐derived expression networks as were previously identified in adult WTSP brains (EPM2A, BPNT1, TAF5L). These hub genes were located within the supergene, highlighting the importance of this gene complex in structuring regulatory networks across diverse tissues.  相似文献

Life histories show genetic population-level variation due to spatial variation in selection pressures. Phenotypic plasticity in life histories is also common, facilitating fine-tuning of the phenotype in relation to the prevailing selection regime. In multivoltine (≥ 2 generations per year) insects, individuals following alternative developmental pathways (diapause/direct development) experience different selection regimes. We studied the genetic and phenotypic components of juvenile development in Cabera exanthemata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in a factorial split-brood experiment. F(2) offspring of individuals originating from populations in northern and central Finland were divided among manipulations defined by temperature (14°C/20°C) and day length (24 h/15 h). Short day length invariably induced diapause, whereas continuous light almost invariably induced direct development in both regions, although northern populations are strictly univoltine in the wild. Individuals from northern Finland had higher growth rates, shorter development times and higher pupal masses than individuals from central Finland across the conditions, indicating genetic differences between regions. Individuals that developed directly into adults tended to have higher growth rates, shorter development times and higher pupal masses than those entering diapause, indicating phenotypic plasticity. Temperature-induced plasticity was substantial; growth rate was much higher, development time much shorter and pupal mass higher at 20°C than at 14°C. The degree of plasticity in relation to developmental pathway was pronounced at 20°C in growth rate and development time and at 14°C in pupal mass, emphasizing multidimensionality of reaction norms. The observed genetic variation and developmental plasticity seem adaptive in relation to time-stress due to seasonality.  相似文献

Gamete activation in fish is an important step in terms of artificial fertilization of oocytes, cryopreservation studies and other experimental manipulations. Salinity and pH differences in activation media affect to sperm motility and fertilizing ability. These experiments were therefore designed to investigate the combined effects of pH (range 5.0–9.0) and salinity (20, 30, 37, and 45‰) of activation media on sperm motility of European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. The best results were obtained at salinity 37‰ and a pH of 9.0. Our results also demonstrated that non-progressive motility at salinity 45‰ was observed in the range of 5.0–9.0 pH. In conclusion, spermatozoa can be motile at a wide range of pH and salinity values although the percent of motile spermatozoa and motility duration are negatively affected by low pH values.  相似文献

Temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) can be observed in multiple reptile and fish species. It is adaptive when varying environmental conditions advantage either males or females. A good knowledge of the thermosensitive period is key to understand how environmental changes may lead to changes in population sex ratio. Here, by manipulating temperature during development, we confirm that cold temperature (16°C) increases the proportion of fish that develop as females in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) until 56 days posthatching, but show that it has an opposite effect at later stages, with the proportion of males reaching ~90% after 230 days at 16°C. This is the first observation of opposite effects of temperature at different time periods on the sex ratio of a vertebrate. Our results highlight the potential complexity of environmental effects on sex determination.  相似文献

The predictive adaptive response (PAR) hypothesis proposes that animals adjust their physiology and developmental trajectory during early life in anticipation of their future environments. Accordingly, when environmental conditions in early life match environmental conditions during adulthood, individual fitness should be greater. Here, we test this hypothesis in a long-lived mammal, the roe deer, using data from two contrasting populations, intensively monitored for more than 35 years. In the highly productive site, the fitness of female roe deer increased with the quality of environment during adulthood and, contrary to predictions of PAR, individuals born in good conditions always outperformed those born under poor conditions. In the resource-limited site, the fitness of female roe deer born in poor years was better than those born in good conditions in poor years when the animals were adult, but not in good years. Although consistent with predictions of PAR, we showed that this pattern is likely to be a consequence of increased viability selection during the juvenile stage for animals born in poor years. While PARs are often advanced in evolutionary medicine, our findings suggest that detailed biological processes should be investigated before drawing conclusions about the existence of this phenomenon.  相似文献

Experimental evolution (EE) is a powerful tool for addressing how environmental factors influence life‐history evolution. While in nature different selection pressures experienced across the lifespan shape life histories, EE studies typically apply selection pressures one at a time. Here, we assess the consequences of adaptation to three different developmental diets in combination with classical selection for early or late reproduction in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. We find that the response to each selection pressure is similar to that observed when they are applied independently, but the overall magnitude of the response depends on the selection regime experienced in the other life stage. For example, adaptation to increased age at reproduction increased lifespan across all diets; however, the extent of the increase was dependent on the dietary selection regime. Similarly, adaptation to a lower calorie developmental diet led to faster development and decreased adult weight, but the magnitude of the response was dependent on the age‐at‐reproduction selection regime. Given that multiple selection pressures are prevalent in nature, our findings suggest that trade‐offs should be considered not only among traits within an organism, but also among adaptive responses to different—sometimes conflicting—selection pressures, including across life stages.  相似文献

Temperature is a determining factor for the development and establishment potential of insect pests. The present study describes the impact of temperature (13, 18, 23, 25, 28, 30, and 33 °C) on the life cycle parameters and phenotypic plasticity of South American populations of Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in the laboratory. Secondary objectives were to determine the lower thermal threshold and thermal constant to estimate the number of annual generations of the insect in small-fruit-producing regions in Brazil. The highest egg-to-adult survival was recorded at 23 and 25 °C. At 30 and 33 °C, no emergence of D. suzukii was observed. The egg-to-adult development time was shortest at 25 and 28 °C (ca. 10 days). The net reproductive rate (R0), and the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm) were highest at 23 and 25 °C. In contrast, temperatures of 13 and 28 °C generated largest and smallest body sizes, respectively, and caused reductions of 99 and 93% in R0. The estimated lower thermal threshold was 7.8 °C for egg-to-adult survival. The estimated thermal constant was 185.8 degree days, and the estimated annual number of generations of D. suzukii ranged from 17.1 in cold regions to 27.2 in warm regions. The results of the present study are important for understanding D. suzukii occurrence in the field, contributing to more informed and precise pest management.  相似文献
