We have performed precise structural measurements on five different calcitic seashells by high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction on a synchrotron beam line and by laboratory single crystal X-ray diffraction. The unit cell parameters a and c of biogenic calcite were found to be systematically larger than those measured in the non-biogenic calcite. The maximum lattice distortion (about 2.10(-3)) was detected along the c-axis. Under heat treatment above 200 degrees C, a pronounced lattice relaxation was observed, which allowed us to conclude that anisotropic lattice swelling in biogenic calcite is induced by organic macromolecules incorporated within the single crystal calcitic prisms during biomineralization. This conclusion is supported by the results of crystallization experiments in the presence of specific protein extracted from one of the shells.  相似文献

The presence of capitula, the head-type of inflorescences, is widespread in the Asterideae. Several families, predominantly terminal in the clade, display the tendency of maximizing reproductive output by condensing indeterminate inflorescences to the point of capitulum formation. This is accomplished by the process of halting or suppressing development of the internodes, an example of paedomorphosis of the progenesis type. This tendency is either infrequent or absent in the basal members of the Asteridae. When inflorescence condensation is present, closely related taxa often demonstrate the progression of the paedomorphosis. More examples of capitulum formation are found in the more advanced families, culminating with the Asteraceae, almost all of which display fully condensed capitula of some sort. Other phenomena are also apparent besides the basic inflorescence condensation. Edge effects are often seen, ranging from a mere crowding of the outermost flowers to the formation of additional flower types. In some taxa, inflorescence condensation continues beyond the basic capitulum form, yielding even more condensed inflorescences that then become determinate. More highly condensed inflorescences have independently evolved several times in the Asteraceae, and some tertiarily condensed inflorescences have evolved as well.  相似文献

We propose that the use of public information about the quality of environmental resources, obtained by monitoring the sampling behaviour of others, may be a widespread social phenomenon allowing individuals to make faster, more accurate assessments of their environment. To demonstrate this (i) we define public information and distinguish it from other kinds of social information; (ii) we review empirical work demonstrating the benefits and costs of using public information to estimate food patch quality; (iii) we examine recent work showing that individuals may also be using public information to improve their estimates of the quality of such disparate environmental parameters as breeding patches, opponents and mates; and finally (iv) we suggest avenues of future work to better understand the nature of public information use and when it might be used or ignored. Such work should lead to a more complete understanding of the behaviour of individuals in social aggregations.  相似文献

Cellular internalization of cell-penetrating peptide HIV-1 Tat basic domain (RKKRRQRRR) was studied in Triticale cv AC Alta mesophyll protoplasts. Fluorescently labeled monomer (Tat) and dimer (Tat(2)) of Tat basic domain efficiently translocated through the plasma membrane of mesophyll protoplast and showed distinct nuclear accumulation within 10 min of incubation. Substitution of first arginine residue with alanine in Tat basic domain (M-Tat) severely reduced cellular uptake of the peptide (3.8 times less than Tat). Tat(2) showed greater cellular internalization than Tat (1.6 times higher). However, characteristics of cellular uptake remained same for Tat and Tat(2). Cellular internalization of Tat and Tat(2) was concentration dependent and non-saturable whereas no significant change in cellular uptake was observed even at higher concentrations of M-Tat. Low temperature (4 degrees C) remarkably increased cellular internalization of Tat as well as Tat(2) but M-Tat showed no enhanced uptake. Viability test showed that peptide treatment had no cytotoxic effect on protoplasts further indicating involvement of a common mechanism of peptide uptake at all the temperatures. Endocytic inhibitors nocodazole (10 muM), chloroquine (100 muM) and sodium azide (5 mM) did not show any significant inhibitory effect on cellular internalization of either Tat or Tat(2). These results along with stimulated cellular uptake at low temperature indicate that Tat peptide is internalized in the plant protoplasts in a non-endocytic and energy-independent manner. Competition experiments showed that non-labeled peptide did not inhibit or alter nuclear accumulation of fluorescent Tat or Tat(2) suggesting active transport to the nucleus was not involved. Studies in mesophyll protoplasts show that internalization pattern of Tat peptide is apparently similar to that observed in mammalian cell lines.  相似文献

A palatal organ, possibly used for food sorting and processing, has previously been identified among the vomerine toothplates of the chimaeroid Chimaera monstrosa. In this study, the palatal organ was described in six additional species, confirming it is a widespread trait among holocephalans. It is proposed that this palatal structure, which appears to differ in shape according to each chimaeroid's degree of durophagy and is not homologous to the palatal structure described in teleosts, be hereby referred to as Vacchi's organ.  相似文献

The UBX domain is an 80 amino acid residue module that is present typically at the carboxyl terminus of a variety of eukaryotic proteins. In an effort to elucidate the function of UBX domains, we solved the three-dimensional structure of the UBX domain of human Fas-associated factor-1 (FAF1) by NMR spectroscopy. The structure has a beta-Grasp fold characterised by a beta-beta-alpha-beta-beta-alpha-beta secondary-structure organisation. The five beta strands are arranged into a mixed sheet in the order 21534. The longer first helix packs across the first three strands of the sheet, and a second shorter 3(10) helix is located in an extended loop connecting strands 4 and 5. In the absence of significant sequence similarity, the UBX domain can be superimposed with ubiquitin with an r.m.s.d. of 1.9 A, suggesting that the two structures share the same superfold, and an evolutionary relationship. However, the absence of a carboxyl-terminal extension containing a double glycine motif and of suitably positioned lysine side-chains makes it highly unlikely that UBX domains are either conjugated to other proteins or part of mixed UBX-ubiquitin chains. Database searches revealed that most UBX domain-containing proteins belong to one of four evolutionarily conserved families represented by the human FAF1, p47, Y33K, and Rep8 proteins. A role of the UBX domain in ubiquitin-related processes is suggested.  相似文献

Ontogenetic color changes in fully turgid flowers are widespread throughout the angiosperms, and in many cases are known to provide signals for pollinators. A broad survey of flowering plants demonstrates that such color changes appear in at least 77 diverse families. Color-changing taxa occur commonly within what are considered derived lineages, and only rarely in early or primitive groups. The pattern of distribution of floral color change across orders, families, genera, and species demonstrates that the occurrence of the phenomenon within a group is not simply a result of phylogenetic history. Color changes can affect the whole flower or they can be localized, affecting at least nine floral parts or regions. The scale of color change (localized or whole-flower) is broadly correlated with the type of pollinator that characteristically visits the plant. Color changes can come about through seven distinct physiological mechanisms, involving anthocyanins, carotenoids, and betalains. Color changes due to appearance of anthocyanin are the most common, occurring in 68 families. Floral color change has clearly evolved independently many times, most likely in response to selection by visually oriented pollinators, and reflects a widespread functional convergence within the angiosperms.  相似文献

Laboratory and field data bearing on the adaptive bleaching hypothesis (ABH) are largely consistent with it; no data of which we are aware refute it. We generalize the ABH in light of these data and observations. The population of zooxanthellae within an organism is dynamic, the diversity of zooxanthellae is both surprising and difficult to ascertain, and field experiments demonstrate both turn-over in zooxanthella types and habitat-holobiont correlations. Dynamic change in symbiont communities, and the idea of an equilibrium or optimal community that matches the environment at a particular place and time, are concepts that underlie or emerge from much of the recent literature. The mechanism we proposed to explain responses to acute bleaching appears to operate continuously, thereby enabling the host-symbiont holobiont to track even subtle environmental changes and respond promptly to them. These findings enhance the potential importance of the ABH in the outcomes of acute bleaching, which can (1) accelerate this process of holobiont change, and (2) change the set of possible trajectories for how symbiont communities might recover.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new biopsychophysical concept of phosphene phenomenon. Namely, visual sensation of phosphenes is due to the intrinsic perception of ultraweak bioluminescent photon emission of cells in the visual system. In other words, phosphenes are bioluminescent biophotons in the visual system induced by various stimuli (mechanical, electrical, magnetic, ionizing radiation, etc.) as well as random bioluminescent biophotons firings of cells in the visual pathway. This biophoton emission can become conscious if induced or spontaneous biophoton emission of cells in the visual system exceeds a distinct threshold. Neuronal biophoton communication can occur by means of non-visual neuronal opsins and natural photosensitive biomolecules. Our interpretation is in direct connection with the functional roles of free radicals and excited biomolecules in living cells.  相似文献

Exploring the ability of organisms to locally adapt is critical for determining the outcome of rapid climate changes, yet few studies have addressed this question in microorganisms. We investigated the role of a heterogeneous climate on adaptation of North American populations of the wild yeast Saccharomyces paradoxus. We found abundant among-strain variation for fitness components across a range of temperatures, but this variation was only partially explained by climatic variation in the distribution area. Most of fitness variation was explained by the divergence of genetically distinct groups, distributed along a north–south cline, suggesting that these groups have adapted to distinct climatic conditions. Within-group fitness components were correlated with climatic conditions, illustrating that even ubiquitous microorganisms locally adapt and harbour standing genetic variation for climate-related traits. Our results suggest that global climatic changes could lead to adaptation to new conditions within groups, or changes in their geographical distributions.  相似文献

A vortex varix consists of a bulging of the vortex ampulla and overlying retina. This dynamic retinal finding can change with the patient's direction of gaze. The clinician can often visualize a red, elevated lesion that appears and disappears thus, making the diagnosis confusing.
