The reversibility of filial preferences was studied in domestic chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus, using an artificial as well as a more naturalistic imprinting stimulus. Day-old chicks were exposed for 2 h to either a rotating stuffed jungle fowl or a rotating red box. Two hours later their preferences were tested in a simultaneous choice test (test I), involving the box and the fowl. The next day, the chicks were trained and tested (test II) as before, except box-trained chicks were now exposed to the fowl and vice versa. In three different experimental groups, the relative attractiveness of the two stimuli (as measured in test I) was varied by altering the light intensity of the red box. In the chicks trained with the box and subsequently exposed to the fowl, there was a significant decrease in mean preference for the box from test I to test II. In contrast, the preference of the chicks trained with the stuffed fowl were not affected by subsequent exposure to the red box. This differential reversibility was also found when, in test I, the preference for the box was significantly higher than the preference for the fowl. These results support a model of the formation of filial preference as an interaction between acquired preference and a developing predisposition for a particular class of stimuli.  相似文献

Domestic chicks were exposed to a moving, stuffed jungle fowl or a rotating red box. The effects on the imprinting process of lesions to a restricted part of the hyperstriatum ventrale (IMHV) were studied in a series of experiments. Sham-operated control chicks developed a strong preference for the training object. Damage to IMHV impaired chicks' preferences for the training stimulus. However, the effect on chicks exposed to the red box was profound, whereas the effect on chicks exposed to the jungle fowl was relatively weak. The results suggest that information about a complex object, which in the experiments described resembled the chicks' own species, is stored in a different way from information derived from a relatively simple artificial object.  相似文献

When given a simultaneous choice preference test 24h after being allowed a period of time in running wheels, dark-reared domestic chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus, will approach a stuffed jungle fowl in preference to a red box. The present study was designed to determine which aspects of the stuffed fowl were critical for the emergence of this preference. In all experiments the preferences of dark-reared chicks were studied in a test involving the simultaneous presentation of an intact stuffed jungle fowl and a second, test object. In experiment 1 this object was a ‘complex’ red box, in experiments 2.1 and 2.2 disarticulated stuffed fowl, and in experiment 2.3 the ‘scrambled’ skin of a jungle fowl. The results of these experiments suggested that particular arrangements or configurations of features, and not outline or textural complexity alone, are important for the emergence of the predisposition. Further support for this hypothesis was obtained in experiment 2.4 in which the intact fowl was compared to a test object containing such configurations of features. The result of experiment 3 suggested that the configuration of features associated with the head and neck region are particularly important, while the results of experiments 4 and 5, in which the test objects were a stuffed gadwall duck and a stuffed polecat, respectively, established that the configuration of features esential for the predisposition is not species specific.  相似文献

Reproductive-effort theory predicts that parents of any given age should expend more parental effort (1) as their residual reproductive value declines, and (2) as the reproductive value of offspring increases. An observational and experimental study of nest defense by captive red jungle fowl hens was used to examine these two predictions. Both young and old individuals significantly increased defense of the second nest compared to the first nest within a season; this pattern occurred for the defense of both eggs and chicks. Old hens showed significantly greater defense of both eggs and chicks in each of the nests than did young hens. Both young and old hens were significantly more defensive of chicks than eggs in each of two clutches of a season. Hens also reduced their nest defense significantly at the end of a two to three-day period after their chicks were replaced with eggs, and increased their nest defense after eggs were exchanged for chicks. Hens given four chicks showed more vigorous defense than hens given two chicks. When the brood size of hens with four chicks was reduced to one chick, the hens responded by exhibiting less vigorous nest defense. These patterns of nest defense in jungle fowl were not confounded by parental experience of hens, or differences in offspring quality that are related to time of breeding, maternal age, sire genetic quality or vulnerability of offspring to weather.  相似文献

Like mammals, bird embryos are capable of chemosensory learning, but the ontogeny of their feeding preferences has not been examined. We tested if the timing of stimulation in chicken embryos modulates the impact of in ovo olfactory stimulation on later food preferences. We exposed chicken embryos to an olfactory stimulus for a 4-day period in the middle or toward the end of the incubation period. The chicks were tested for their preference between foods with and without the olfactory stimulus in 3-min choice tests and on a 24-h time scale. Regardless of the type of food (familiar or novel) or the duration of the test, the control chicks not exposed to the olfactory stimulus consistently showed significant preferences for non-odorized foods. Chicks that were exposed in ovo to the olfactory stimulus did not show a preference for odorized or non-odorized foods. Only those chicks that were exposed to the olfactory stimulus toward the end of the incubation period differed from the controls and incorporated a higher proportion of odorized food into their diets on a 24-h time scale. This result indicates that olfactory stimulation at the end of embryonic development has a stronger impact on later feeding preferences. Our findings contribute to the growing pool of recent data appreciating the impact of olfactory signals on behavior regulation in avian species.  相似文献

In the investigation of the neural mechanisms of filial imprinting, neurochemical measures are often correlated with preference score (PS): approach activity to the training stimulus/total approach in a test. In a previous study, domestic chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus, that had a PS under 65% were classed as 'poor learners' and those with a PS greater than 65% were called 'good learners'. We tested the effects of continued imprinting training in chicks from these two categories. After exposure to an imprinting stimulus for 30 min on day 1 after hatching, preferences were tested and then the chicks were exposed to the same stimulus for either 90 min, 3 h or 4 h on the next day, followed by a second preference test. In all these experiments there was a significant improvement in mean PS in the 'poor learners' between the first and second test, such that these chicks acquired a significant mean preference for the training stimulus. There was no such improvement in chicks that did not receive further training on day 2. When absolute approach was analysed, there was no significant difference between 'poor learners' and 'good learners' at the second test, after 4 h of retraining. Overall, mean preference scores increased with length of training. These results suggest that 'poor learners' are better characterized as 'slow learners', and that their initially low PS is not caused by, for example, a lack of motivation to express a preference. We examined mate preference behavior in red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus, to determine if the mechanism of mate preference used by females was relative or absolute. Under a relative model, females compare males and prefer the one with the most exaggerated form of secondary sex character, regardless of where the proffered males lie along the population distribution of the trait. Under an absolute or threshold model, females have a threshold for the character, above which they will exert a preference and below which they will not. Female red jungle fowl preferred roosters with longer combs and redder irises, but this preference was exerted only when hens mated quickly; females mating slowly mated at random. The threshold model was supported in two ways: i) chosen males from the fast-mating group had larger combs than chosen males in the slow-mating group; ii) when the same female was presented with two pairs of males in two different trials, one large-combed pair and one small-combed pair, hens mated significantly more slowly, and often refused to mate, when only short-combed roosters were available. Hens thus alter their behavior depending on the males they see, and they may not exert a preference at all if both males fall below the threshold. Further corroborating evidence comes from a set of mate choice trials using underdeveloped roosters, in which males had small combs and females mated slowly or did not mate. The method of choice used by females could affect the speed with which correlations develop between the genes for male traits and genes for female preferences. Sexual selection for good genes may be more consistent with an absolute than a relative method of female choice.  相似文献

利用29个微卫星DNA标记对来自中国的红原鸡Gallus gallus spadiceus亚种和来自泰国的红原鸡Gallus gallus gallus亚种进行遗传多样性分析, 评估亚种内的遗传变异和亚种间的遗传分化, 结果表明: 共检测到168个等位基因, 每个位点的等位基因数从2到13不等, 所有位点平均的期望杂合度和PIC值分别为0.5780和0.53。中国和泰国红原鸡29个微卫星位点平均有效等位基因数分别为3.79和4.79, 平均基因杂合度为0.5379和0.6385, 两个红原鸡亚种均表现出较高的群体杂合度和丰富的遗传多样性。群体分化系数为19.4%(P<0.01), 两个红原鸡亚种间的Reynolds’遗传距离和Nm值分别为0.157和1.040。由此可见, Gallus gallus spadiceus亚种和Gallus gallus gallus亚种群体具有不同的群体遗传结构, 群体之间存在明显的遗传分化, 并不能将其认定为是同一亚种, 这也为中国家鸡具有独立的起源提供了一定的佐证。  相似文献

A new family of related endogenous proviruses, existing at 50 to 100 copies per haploid genome and distinguishable by remarkably short long terminal repeats, has been described for domestic chickens (Gallus gallus subsp domesticus). In this communication, by using Southern blot analysis and probes derived from both internal viral sequences and locus-specific, cellular flanking sequences, we studied the genetic distribution of this family of moderately repetitive avian endogenous retroviruses within the genomes of four Gallus species. Eight inbred lines of domestic chickens, the evolutionary progenitor to the domestic chicken (red jungle fowl), and two more distantly related species (grey and green jungle fowl) were studied. All Gallus species harbored this class of elements, although the different lines of domestic chickens and different species of jungle fowl bore distinguishable complements of the proviral loci. Jungle fowl appeared to have fewer copies than domestic chickens. For three randomly isolated proviral loci, domestic chickens (G. gallus subsp. domesticus) and red jungle fowl (G. gallus subsp. gallus) showed only a proviral state, whereas the most primitive and divergent of the jungle fowl, the green jungle fowl (G. varius), consistently demonstrated only preintegration states or disparate alleles. The presence of this family in all Gallus species and of related sequences in other genera suggests that a primordial founding integration event occurred prior to the evolutionary separation of Gallus species and possibly related genera. Additionally, at least one proviral locus has been acquired subsequent to speciation, indicating that this family was actively infectious after the primary founding event. This conserved, repetitive proviral family appears to represent the vestigial remnant of an avian retrovirus class related to and evolutionarily more ancient than the Rous-associated virus-0 family of avian endogenous retroviruses.  相似文献

Compared to ancestral wild jungle fowl, domestic broiler chickens have been consciously selected for large body size, relatively large pectoral muscles, rapid growth, and high feed efficiency. Hence intraspecific comparisons of these two strains could help identify consequences of unconscious artificial selection, trade-offs in energy allocation, and factors limiting energy budgets. We therefore compared our measurements of many corresponding parameters in both strains: growth rate, energy intake, digestive efficiency, metabolic rate and its components, organ masses, and intestinal brush-border nutrient transporter and hydrolase activities and capacities, as functions of age and body mass in zero- to nine-week-old chicks. Both strains prove to have the same digestive efficiency. Compared to equal-sized jungle fowl, broilers have higher daily energy intake and activity costs. Broilers have relatively longer and wider, hence heavier, small intestines, and their other gut compartments are also relatively larger. Offsetting these increases, broilers have relatively smaller brains and leg bones, these being much less important to a captive bird than to a wild bird exposed to predators. Broilers have generally lower intestinal transporter activities, but relatively higher transporter capacities because of their larger guts. Among domestic chicken strains, comparison of broilers with layers, the former having been consciously selected for much higher growth rates, yields generally similar conclusions. Thus, as recognized in broad outline by Darwin, domestication provides clear examples of conscious selection, of unconscious selection for traits prerequisite to the consciously selected traits, and of unconscious selection against traits rendered less important or competing for space or energy.  相似文献

The Indian red jungle fowl is a sub-species of the genus Gallus native to South Asia; facing high risk of extinction in its native habitat. During cryopreservation, permeable cryoprotectants like glycerol are usually employed and we previously showed encouraging results with 20% glycerol. Because bird spermatozoa contain very little intracellular water, the possibility of replacing an internal cryoprotectant by an external one is opened. In the present study, we tested the replacement of internal cryoprotectant glycerol by the external cryoprotectant Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). PVP is a non-permeable cryoprotectant and keeps the sperm in glassy state both in cooling and warming stages without making ice crystallization within the sperm cell. We evaluated the effect of various levels of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on Indian red jungle fowl semen quality and fertility outcomes. The qualifying semen ejaculates collected from eight mature cocks were pooled, divided into five aliquots, diluted (37 °C) with red fowl semen extender having PVP [0% (control) 4% (w/v), 6% (w/v), 8% (w/v) and 10% (w/v)]. Diluted semen was cryopreserved and stored in liquid nitrogen. The whole experiment was repeated/replicated for five times independently. Sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity, viability and acrosome integrity were recorded highest (P < 0.05) with 6% PVP at post-dilution, cooling, equilibration and freeze-thawing. Higher (P < 0.05) no. of fertile eggs, fertility, no. of hatched chicks, percent hatch and hatchability was recorded with 6% PVP compared to control. It is concluded that 6% PVP maintained better post-taw quality and fertility of Indian red jungle fowl spermatozoa than glycerol and can be used in routine practice avoiding the contraceptive effects of glycerol.  相似文献

In species with duplicated major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes, estimates of genetic variation often rely on multilocus measures of diversity. It is possible that such measures might not always detect more detailed patterns of selection at individual loci. Here, we describe a method that allows us to investigate classical MHC diversity in red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus), the wild ancestor of the domestic chicken, using a single locus approach. This is possible due to the well-characterised gene organisation of the ‘minimal essential’ MHC (BF/BL region) of the domestic chicken, which comprises two differentially expressed duplicated class I (BF) and two class II B (BLB) genes. Using a combination of reference strand-mediated conformation analysis, cloning and sequencing, we identify nine BF and ten BLB alleles in a captive population of jungle fowl. We show that six BF and five BLB alleles are from the more highly expressed locus of each gene, BF2 and BLB2, respectively. An excess of non-synonymous substitutions across the jungle fowl BF/BL region suggests that diversifying selection has acted on this population. Importantly, single locus screening reveals that the strength of selection is greatest on the highly expressed BF2 locus. This is the first time that a population of red jungle fowl has been typed at the MHC region, laying the basis for further research into the underlying processes acting to maintain MHC diversity in this and other species.  相似文献

根据腺苷琥珀酸裂解酶(adenylosuccinate lyase, ADSL)基因外显子2的序列设计引物, 用PCR-SSCP的方法对隐性白羽鸡、丝羽乌骨鸡、白耳鸡、藏鸡以及红色原鸡两个亚种进行了单核苷酸多态性分析, 并检测到了多态性, 表现为3种基因型, 对两种纯合子进行直接测序, 结果发现3484位碱基处发生C→T突变。对3种基因型的肌肉肌苷酸含量的最小二乘分析结果显示TT型(突变型)个体的肌肉肌苷酸含量极显著地高于CT型、显著地高于CC型个体, CT型个体也稍高于CC型, 但差异不显著, 初步推测该位点可能与肌肉肌苷酸含量有关。根据该多态位点的基因频率, 基于Nei氏的遗传距离运用NJ聚类法构建系统发生树, 进行家鸡与原鸡的亲缘关系分析, 结果发现, 丝羽乌骨鸡与白耳鸡的亲缘关系最近, 藏鸡和中国红原鸡亚种的亲缘关系也较近, 中国地方家鸡品种与中国红原鸡亚种的亲缘关系较近,而与泰国红色原鸡的亲缘关系较远,隐性白羽鸡与原鸡亲缘关系最远, 初步得出中国家鸡有自己独自的血缘来源的结论。  相似文献

Genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships among 568 individuals of two red jungle fowl subspe- cies (Gallus gallus spadiceus in China and Gallus gallus gallus in Thailand) and 14 Chinese domestic chicken breeds were evaluated with 29 microstaellite loci, the genetic variability within population and genetic differentiation among population were estimated, and then genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships were analyzed among red jungle fowls and Chinese domestic fowls. A total of 286 alleles were detected in 16 population with 29 microsatellite markers and the average number of the alleles observed in 29 microsatellite loci was 9.86±6.36. The overall expected heterozygosity of all population was 0.6708±0.0251, and the number of population deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium per locus ranged from 0 to 7. In the whole population, the average of genetic differentiation among population, measured as FST value, was 16.7% (P<0.001), and all loci contributed significantly (P<0.001) to this differentiation. It can also be seen that the deficit of heterozygotes was very high (0.015) (P<0.01). Reynolds' distance values varied between 0.036 (Xiaoshan chicken-Luyuan chicken pair) and 0.330 (G. gallus gallus-Gushi chicken pair). The Nm value ranged from 0.533 (between G. gallus gallus and Gushi chicken) to 5.833 (between Xiaoshan chicken and Luyuan chicken). An unrooted consensus tree was constructed using the neighbour-joining method and the Reynolds' genetic distance. The heavy-body sized chicken breeds, Luyuan chicken, Xiaoshan chicken, Beijing Fatty chicken, Henan Game chicken, Huainan Partridge and Langshan chicken formed one branch, and it had a close genetic relationship between Xiaoshan chicken-Luyuan chicken pair and Chahua chicken-Tibetan chicken pair. Chahua chicken and Tibetan chicken had closer genetic relationship with these two subspecies of red jungle fowl than other domestic chicken breeds. G. gallus spadiceus showed closer phylogenetic relationship with Chinese domestic chicken breeds than G. gallus gallus. All 29 microstaellite loci in this study showed high levels of polymorphism and significant genetic differentiation was observed among two subspecies of red jungle fowl and 14 Chinese domestic chicken breeds. The evolutional dendrogram is as follows: evolutional breeds→primitive breeds (Chahua chicken and Tibetan)→red jungle fowl in China (G. gallus spadiceus)→red jungle fowl in Thailand (G. gallus gallus). The results supported the theory that the domestic fowls might originate from different subspecies of red jungle fowl and Chinese domestic fowls had independent origin.  相似文献

This is the first time that gait characteristics of broiler (meat) chickens have been compared with their progenitor, jungle fowl, and the first kinematic study to report a link between broiler gait parameters and defined lameness scores. A commercial motion-capturing system recorded three-dimensional temporospatial information during walking. The hypothesis was that the gait characteristics of non-lame broilers (n = 10) would be intermediate to those of lame broilers (n = 12) and jungle fowl (n = 10, tested at two ages: immature and adult). Data analysed using multi-level models, to define an extensive range of baseline gait parameters, revealed inter-group similarities and differences. Natural selection is likely to have made jungle fowl walking gait highly efficient. Modern broiler chickens possess an unbalanced body conformation due to intense genetic selection for additional breast muscle (pectoral hypertrophy) and whole body mass. Together with rapid growth, this promotes compensatory gait adaptations to minimise energy expenditure and triggers high lameness prevalence within commercial flocks; lameness creating further disruption to the gait cycle and being an important welfare issue. Clear differences were observed between the two lines (short stance phase, little double-support, low leg lift, and little back displacement in adult jungle fowl; much double-support, high leg lift, and substantial vertical back movement in sound broilers) presumably related to mass and body conformation. Similarities included stride length and duration. Additional modifications were also identified in lame broilers (short stride length and duration, substantial lateral back movement, reduced velocity) presumably linked to musculo-skeletal abnormalities. Reduced walking velocity suggests an attempt to minimise skeletal stress and/or discomfort, while a shorter stride length and time, together with longer stance and double-support phases, are associated with instability. We envisage a key future role for this highly quantitative methodology in pain assessment (associated with broiler lameness) including experimental examination of therapeutic agent efficacy.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to localize the areas of the chick brain involved in the development of filial predisposition to follow conspecifics. Expression of the immediate early gene c-fos mRNA was used to map such structures. One-day-old chicks were stimulated (primed) by placing for 90 min into a running wheel in darkness or by exposure to a loud nonspecific sound for 180 min. Brains of a part of these chicks taken 45 min after the beginning of priming were used for c-fos expression study. The remaining chicks were tested 24 hours after priming by simultaneous presentation of a "natural" object (stuffed fowl) and an "artifical" object (rotating red cube). Primed chicks demonstrated significant preference for the natural object as compared to untreated control chicks. In the forebrain of chicks primed both in the running wheel and by acoustic stimulation a significant c-fos expression was found in the medial part of the caudal neostriatum. Priming in the running wheel additionally induced c-fos expression in the lobus parolfactorius, while priming by acoustic stimulation produced high c-fos expression in the archistriatum. Both these areas are known to be involved in filial imprinting. The results suggest that these structures can be also involved in the development of filial predisposition in chicks.  相似文献

By a variety of electrophoretic procedures it has been found that Gallus gallus , whether as jungle fowl or as chickens, differs consistently from Sonnerat's jungle fowl, G. sonnerati , in three egg white proteins: G3 ovoglobulin, G2 ovoglobulin and glutamyl peptidase. The electrophoretic patterns of egg white hybrids between G. gallus and G. sonnerati are identical to those obtained after simpiy mixing the egg whites; there is no evidence for hybrid protein zones. Although Japanese data on serum amylase can be interpreted as indicating introgressive hybridization in the origin of the domestic fowl, so far the egg protein data are negative in this respect.  相似文献

Two female-specific repeating DNA units of 0.6 kilobase pairs (kb) and 1.1 kb, produced by digesting the genomic DNA of the White Leghorn chicken with Xho I, were cloned by inserting them into the Xho I site of an Escherichia coli plasmid vector pACYC177. Two such recombinant plasmids, pAGD0601 and pAGD1101, containing a single 0.6-kb and 1.1-kb sequence, respectively, were used as molecular probes. In situ hybridization of the 3Hprobes to the metaphase chromosomes from the female White Leghorn embryos revealed their localization in the W chromosome. Semiquantitative Southern blot hybridization with 32P-probes in excess indicated that the 0.6-kb unit and 1.1-kb unit were repeated approximately 14,000 and 6,000 times, respectively, in the W chromosome. The two units comprised about 46% of the W chromosomal DNA. These two repeating units were found in the female genomes of every line of Gallus g. domesticus tested and in the female genomes of three jungle fowl species (G. gallus, G. sonneratii, and G. varius) but not in three species belonging to other genera in the suborder Galli. Hha I sites in the 0.6-kb and 1.1-kb repeating units were shown to be extensively methylated and a significant fraction of the Hpa II sites in the 0.6-kb repeating units were also shown to be methylated in the female genome of the White Leghorn. Methylation patterns of Hpa II sites in or around the 0.6-kb repeating units examined by the Msp I digestion were similar in the various lines of domestic fowls and the two species of jungle fowls, but G. varius (black or green jungle fowl) produced a different pattern of digestion with Msp I.  相似文献

A single amino acid substitution between Asn and Ser at position 631 in the chicken Mx protein has been reported to determine resistant and sensitive antiviral activity. In this study, we investigate whether various kinds of chicken breeds and jungle fowls carry the resistant or sensitive Mx allelic gene by using the mismatched PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) technique. In total, 271 samples from 36 strains of 17 chicken breeds and from 3 kinds of jungle fowls were examined. The rates of the resistant Mx gene and sensitive gene were 59.2% and 40.8%, respectively. Only a Red jungle fowl captured in Laos carried the resistant Mx gene, and the other three Red jungle fowls from Indonesia and Gray and Green jungle fowls all had the sensitive Mx gene. These results were confirmed by the determination of amino acid sequences in the GTPase effector domain of jungle fowls.  相似文献

Prenatal learning plays an important role in the ontogeny of behavior and birds provide a useful model to explore whether and how prenatal exposure to hormones of maternal origin can influence prenatal learning and the development of behavior. In this study we assessed if prenatal exposure to yolk testosterone can influence auditory learning in embryos of Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). We experimentally enhanced testosterone concentrations in bobwhite quail eggs prior to incubation. The embryos from these T-treated eggs as well as control embryos that had received the vehicle-only or were non-treated were exposed to an individual bobwhite hen's maternal call for 120 min over the course of the day prior to hatching. All chicks were tested at 24 h following hatching for their auditory preference between the familiar bobwhite maternal call versus an unfamiliar bobwhite maternal call. T-treated chicks spent significantly more time in proximity to the familiar call compared to the unfamiliar call and also showed shorter latencies to approach the familiar call than control birds. Increased emotional reactivity, i.e. propensity to express fear responses, was also found in T-treated chicks. Baseline heart rates recorded in a second group of T-treated embryos and control embryos did not differ, which suggests no effect of yolk testosterone on baseline arousal level.
