Many mammalian species which exhibit scent-marking behaviour show a pronounced sexual dimorphism in marking behaviour and scent gland morphology. However, several species of marmosets and tamarins do not show dimorphism in these traits. We examined sex differences in scent-marking structures and behaviour in cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus o. oedipus; Primates: Callitrichidae). While body size and weight were virtually identical in adult males and females, there were pronounced sex differences in scent gland size and in rates of marking behaviour. Females possessed larger anogenital and suprapubic glands and showed 10-fold higher rates of anogenital marking and slightly higher rates of suprapubic marking than males. Observations on the development of anogenital marking revealed a lack of dimorphism during the first 2 years. Adult rates of anogenital marking in females were only observed in females housed separately from their natal family group. The onset of adult levels of marking behaviour corresponds with the adoption of the role of a breeding adult female, suggesting that anogenital marking plays a role in sexual communication.  相似文献

Woolly monkeys,Lagothrix lagothricha, were briefly studied in a cloud forest in Bolivar, Colombia during the dry season. Results suggest that this species is wholly arboreal, lives in multi-male heterosexual groups and does not defend territory. Woolly monkeys are folivorous and frugivorous. Social and auto-grooming are both reported. All age-sex classes except natal-coated infants and adult males indulge in play. Agonistic behaviour is very rare. There seem to be various consistent patterns of greeting behaviour and scent-marking of the environment was observed. Woolly monkeys tended to approach the observers rather than flee from them. They were observed in close proximity toCebus, Alouatta, andAteles species.  相似文献

Aspects of social structure in group-living species can be inferred by observing the responses of individuals to unfamiliar animals. This study examined the responses of mated pairs of cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus oedipus) to presentation of either unfamiliar conspecifics or members of a related tamarin species, the saddle-back tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis fuscicollis). Male and female responses to intruders differed: resident males threatened, displayed piloerection, approached, and attacked intruders, especially males, while resident females showed increases in suprapubic scentmarking in the presence of intruders. Both males and females discriminated between the species of intruders, exhibiting more threats, scent-marking, piloerection, and approaches in the presence of conspecific intruders. There are pronounced sex differences in the signals and behaviour patterns that are elicited in an aggressive or territorial encounter with unfamiliar conspecifics in this monogamous primate.  相似文献

The structure of the abdominal and pregenital segments and genitalia of males was studied in Pyrellia rapax (Harris, 1780) and Musca autumnalis De Geer, 1776 (Muscidae, Muscini). The musculature of these species is compared with that in Musca domestica Linnaeus, 1758 (Muscidae) and Scathophaga stercoraria (Linnaeus, 1758) (Scathophagidae), previously investigated by O.G. Ovtshinnikova. Morphological analysis of sclerites and muscles of abdominal and pregenital segments and genitalia of males in Pyrellia rapax, Musca autumnalis, and M. domestica demonstrates processes of reduction in Musca as compared with P. rapax and S. stercoraria.  相似文献

Scent-marking and olfactory communication are used extensively by prosimians and can provide spatial and temporal records of group movement and behavior. We compare rates of male scent-marking in relation to reproductive seasons, male dominance rank, and habitat use in two related prosimians: Lemur catta and Eulemur fulvus rufus. We collected scent-marking data on adult male Lemur catta at Beza-Mahafaly Reserve (dry forest), and on Eulemur fulvus rufus at Ranomafana National Park (rainforest), Madagascar. In Lemur, rates of overall scent-marking differed significantly by reproductive season, with higher rates occurring in mating and lactation/migration periods, whereas in Eulemur, reproductive season did not appear to affect scent-marking rates. Dominance rank of male Lemur catta did not affect rates of scent-marking. Among male Eulemur fulvus, dominance relations were not apparent; however, 2 of the 5 focal males scent-marked somewhat more frequently during the mating season and also experienced greater mating success. In Lemur catta, higher rates of scent-marking in the mating season may relate to indirect reproductive competition during a period of high aggression, while such mating competition was not as marked in Eulemur fulvus. Furthermore, higher rates of marking in resident male Lemur catta during male migration may correlate with vigilance toward immigrating males. Greater overall scent-marking rates in ring-tailed lemurs may relate to extensive intergroup home range overlap and no area of exclusive use, whereas the red-fronted lemur groups tended to forage in areas of their home range where little-to-no intergroup overlap occurred.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated gonadal control of mammalian scent glands; castration leads to reduced scent-marking rates and smaller gland sizes. I investigated whether gonadal hormones control the size of the dorsal gland (a specialized sebaceous gland) and sandbathing as a scent-marking behavior in adult male and female bannertail kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis). Gland sizes of males and females were similar in all age classes, except adult males with larger body weights had proportionately larger glands than females. Male gland sizes declined 18% following castration but were not significantly smaller than those of intact males; females showed no change in dorsal gland size either as a result of ovariectomy or after estradiol benzoate implants. Sandbathing rates also did not decline as a result of gonadectomy. Rather, castrated males and overiectomized females sandbathed at higher frequencies than intact males and ovariectomized females with estradiol benzoate implants, respectively. Gonadal hormones apparently have little influence on the function of a specialized scent gland and may inhibit sandbathing as a scent-marking behavior in adult D. spectabilis.  相似文献

Scent-marking behavior has been well documented in many primate species. Three common functions attributed to scent-marking in males of multi-male/multi-female lemur species include: 1) advertisement of individual identity, 2) territorial defense, and 3) reproductive suppression. We examined the average number of scent-marks per hour exhibited daily by adult male sifakas (Propithecus edwardsi) and found that patterns of scent-marking changed with season, natal status, and dominance status. Males in single-male groups scent-marked at the highest rate, followed by dominant males, males of equal status, and subordinate males. Non-natal males generally scent-marked at higher rates than natal males, and adult males living in a natal group without a parent marked at higher rates than males living with a parent. All males scent-marked at higher rates in the migration season compared to the other seasons. These patterns were consistent with territorial defense and advertisement to females, and the suggestion that these chemical signals impart information concerning status. Since scent-marking behavior tracked seasons and varied with both dominance and natal status, it may serve multiple functions in males.  相似文献

Courtship behaviour of two species of periodical cicadas, Magicicada septendecim and M. cassini, was studied in the field during the 1970, 1973, and 1974 emergences of these insects. In areas where both species were courting there were differences in both male and female courtship patterns, both in acoustic and behavioural components. Experiments with models showed that male M. septendecim were more likely to court crude models of females than were M. cassini males. When females were ‘courted’ with models that could imitate some of male courtship, they were more receptive when the models' ‘songs’ were those of conspecific males. Acoustic differences between species are probably used by females in mate selection, maintaining species separation even in areas where the two species overlap in both space and time.  相似文献

The scent-marking behaviour of male and female rats in response to conspecific odours was investigated in two experiments. The results of the first experiment indicated that exposure to conspecific odours generally led to an increase in marking rates. However, no sex differences were found, and large differences in marking responses according to the sex of the odour donor were only found for dioestrous females. These results do not suggest that the primary function of scent-marking in this species is sexual. In the second experiment, odour sources differed not only in the sex of the donor, but also in their relative familiarity to the animal being tested. This experiment showed that males marked more in response to odours from familiar (non-related) females. Females did not differ significantly on measures of marking but did display greater interest in odours from unfamiliar males. The results are discussed in relation to possible functions of marking in this species.  相似文献

Paternal care in microtines has been studied infrequently and few studies have compared patterns of direct and indirect paternal investment. The paternal behaviour of three vole species, the meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), the pine vole (M. pinetorum) and the prairie vole (M. ochrogaster) was examined in a semi-natural setting. Prairie and pine voles were found to exhibit high levels of paternal care. Prairie vole males contributed the most direct care by remaining in the natal nest for long periods of time in contact with the pups. Pine voles contributed less direct care than prairie voles as they spent less time in the natal nest with their offspring. In addition, both prairie and pine vole males were observed to groom their pups and retrieve them back to the nest area. Prairie vole males also engaged in such indirect forms of care as nest construction and maintenance, while pine voles provided indirect care in the form of tunnel construction and food caching. Meadow vole males were the least paternal of the three species and rarely engaged in either direct or indirect care. These findings support predictions that M. pennsylvanicus is promiscuous and that male and female meadow voles occupy separate territories. They are also consistent with studies which indicate that prairie and pine voles are monogamous and have a structured social organization with members interacting closely with one another.  相似文献

Birdsong may be perceived and processed differently by males and females because the production and function of this behaviour are often sexually dimorphic. However, examination of this hypothesis has been difficult, since different behavioural measures have been used to describe the perceptual process for each sex. We analysed changes in heart rate as an index of song perception in Bengalese finches, Lonchura striata var. domestica. In this species, only males sing, and song is used exclusively for mate attraction. This species is not territorial and songs are never used in aggressive contexts. In both sexes, repeated presentation of a song resulted in a waning of the heart rate response. Presentation of heterospecific songs did not increase the heart rate. When a novel conspecific song was presented, the heart rate increased only in females with each presentation of the stimulus, not in males. These results correspond to the sex differences in song usage in this species. Copyright 2003 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Scent-marking is an important form of communication for solitary species, as the information remains for the receiver after the sender has left the area. Individuals of different demographic or dominance classes (ranks) need to provide different information to conspecifics. Therefore, the use of scent-marking sites is of particular value for solitary species, but their functional role may vary between demographic classes. Using camera traps, we video-recorded the behaviour of cheetahs at scent-marking sites, assessing how individuals of different sex and social rank use the sites for different roles. We tested hypotheses that these sites are for territorial marking, reproductive signalling and information gathering. We found that females visit the sites infrequently, apparently to signal oestrous events, while males visit the sites frequently for territorial marking and information gathering. Among males, dominant individuals scent-marked the most and reacted to female visitation by vocalizing. In contrast, subordinate males, although also visiting the sites, were not recorded scent-marking nor vocalizing. These differences in the functional use of scent-marking sites among sex and social rank support the hypotheses that cheetah s use these scent-marking sites for both territorial and reproductive signalling, as well as to gather information.  相似文献

Programmed cell death (PCD) and phagocytotic activity of immune cells play a pivotal role in insect development. We examined the influence of Zn2+, an important element to fundamental biological processes, on phagocytosis and apoptosis of hemocytes in two fly species: Musca domestica and Drosophila melanogaster. Hemocytes were isolated from the third instar larvae of both species and treated for 3 h with zinc chloride solutions, containing 0.35 mM or 1.7 mM of Zn2+, and untreated as control. Phagocytotic activity of hemocytes was examined by flow cytometry after adding latex fluorescent beads to the medium, while apoptosis was evaluated by application of annexinV-FITC and pan-caspase-FITC inhibitor. Mitochondrial viability was determined by measuring resazurin absorbancy in the cell medium. The obtained results showed that Zn2+ increases phagocytosis and affects PCD of both species hemocytes but each in a different way. Zinc decreases fraction of annexin-positive hemocytes in M. domestica but increases it in D. melanogaster. The pan-caspase analysis revealed low and high activity of caspases in hemocytes of M. domestica and D. melanogaster, respectively. Zn2+ also decreased the viability of hemocyte mitochondria but only in D. melanogaster. It suggests that flies use different pathways of PCD, or that Zn plays a different role in this process in M. domestica than in D. melanogaster.  相似文献

Innate differences in the singing behaviour of male swamp (Melospiza georgiana) and song (M. melodia) sparrows were identified by rearing males from the egg in the laboratory under identical conditions, in complete isolation from adult conspecific song. Isolation-reared males of both species displayed several abnormal song features, including reduced numbers of notes per song, longer durations of notes and inter-note intervals, and fewer notes per syllable. Despite these and other abnormalities, many species differences emerged that matched differences in the natural singing behaviour of the two species. These included differences in song repertoire size, song duration and degrees of segmentation, numbers of notes per song, durations of notes and inter-note intervals, and several measures reflecting the organization of songs into note complexes, syllables and trills. Although learning can influence all levels of organization of the motor patterns of song in swamp and song sparrows, its contribution to the achievement of normal song behaviour appears to be most crucial at the level of the fine structure of the notes and syllables from which the songs are constructed.  相似文献

Three male and three female captive red pandas (Ailurus fulgens) were observed during and outside of the breeding season to examine changes in scent-marking behavior. Variation in scent-marking was analyzed with respect to site preferences, sex differences, onset of breeding, behavioral correlates, and environmental factors. Both males and females exhibited significant preferences for particular marking sites, those being prominent points in the enclosures. Males showed significantly higher scent-marking frequencies than females, except in one enclosure where increased marking behavior was associated with the presence of young. Sexual dimorphism in the pattern of marking was also observed, with males showing a bidirectional mark and females a unidirectional mark. Female marking was greater during the breeding season. Sniffing and number of waddles per mark were associated with scent-marking. Temperature change was not related to frequency of scent-marking. These results are compared with scent-marking behaviors in other species of carnivores and functional explanations are suggested.  相似文献

The glycerol concentration and the composition of cuticular and internal sterols in three medically and forensically important fly species, viz., Musca domestica, Sarcophaga carnaria, and Calliphora vicina, were analyzed. The cuticular and internal lipid extracts were separated by HPLC‐LLSD, after which the sterol fraction was characterized by GC/MS in total ion current (TIC) mode. The cuticular lipids of M. domestica larvae contained seven sterols, while in pupae and females, six sterols were identified. Five sterols were found in the cuticular lipids of M. domestica males. The internal lipids of M. domestica larvae and pupae contained six and seven sterols, respectively, while those of male and female flies contained only five sterols. Sitosterol, cholesterol, and campesterol were the dominant sterols in M. domestica, while campestanol, stigmasterol, sitostanol, and fucosterol were identified in low concentrations or in traces. In contrast, cuticular and internal lipids of S. carnaria and C. vicina contained only cholesterol. Glycerol was identified in all stages of M. domestica, S. carnaria, and C. vicina. For all the three examined fly species, the present study clearly showed species‐specific developmental changes in the composition of cuticular and internal sterols as well as in the glycerol concentration.  相似文献

The roles of the JHs and ecdysteroids in ovarian maturation of adult Aedes aegypti, A. atropalpus, Musca domestica and Drosophila melanogaster have been characterized by comparing the effects of surgical (allatectomy, ovariectomy, decapitation, abdominal ligation), genetic, and nutritional (sugar feeding) manipulations. The results show that in all species JHs, or their mimics, and 20-hydroxyecdysone act in combination to stimulate ovarian maturation and vitellogenin (Vg) synthesis and that high doses of exogenous JHs, or their mimics, stimulate ovarian ecdysteroid synthesis, at least in A. aegypti, A. atropalpus, and D. melanogaster. Thus the gonadotropic regulatory mechanisms that exist in various dipteran species are more similar than originally suspected. In M. domestica, and possibly D. melanogaster, 20-hydroxyecdysone is present in the hemolymph at vitellogenic levels in newly emerged females and may persist in ovariectomized adults. If true for D. melanogaster, this could explain why topical application of JH, or its mimics, to ovariectomized, isolated abdomens is effective in stimulating Vg synthesis in the absence of the ovaries.  相似文献

In a sample of 108 underground voles from 23 Greek localities, the species Microtus felteni, M. guentheri, M. rossiaemeridionalis and M. subterraneus were identified, based on external body morphology and karyotype. Moreover, the implemented C-banding staining technique revealed the heterochromatin distribution in the chromosomes of the above species. All M. guentheri (2n=54, FN=54) and M. rossiaemeridionalis (2n=54, FN=56) specimens displayed the typical karyotypes of these species, respectively. The M. subterraneus specimens belonged to the chromosomal race with 2n=52, FN=60 of this species, apart from a single individual that demonstrated a medium-sized, subtelocentric autosome in heterozygous condition (2n=52, FN=61). Furthermore, M. felteni individuals, trapped again after many years, were karyologically studied (2n=54, FN=56) and the C-banding pattern for this species is hereby presented for the first time. Finally, the study of meiotic preparations in M. guentheri and M. rossiaemeridionalis males verified the asynaptic behaviour of their sex chromosomes. The karyotype of the four studied Microtus species does not seem to have diversified much from the putative ancestral arvicoline karyotype (2n=56, FN=56). On the other hand, the heterochromatin accumulation in the sex chromosomes, particularly prominent in M. felteni and M. rossiaemeridionalis, represents this common tendency in several Microtus species.  相似文献

Reproductive behaviors related to habitat utilization were studied in males of the damsefly,Mnais nawai, which has two male forms, territorial orange-winged males (nawai) and non-territorial pale-orange-winged males (sahoi), at the upper part of a mountain stream where they partiallycoexist with a related species,Mnais pruinosa, which also has two male forms, territorial orange-winged males (esakii) and non-territorial hyaline-winged males (strigata). These two species showed parapatric distribution; the lower part of the stream was occupied byM. nawai, and the upper part byM. pruinosa. In the present study, cross-matings occurred between bothMnais species, although normal intraspecific matings occurred more frequently than cross-matings. Territorial males of both species copulated with conspecific females that entered their territory and guarded the ovipositing females, probably to avoid sperm displacement resulting from subsequent copulations. Severe competition for oviposition sites by territorial males even occurred between the two species. On the other hand, non-territorial males of both species have alternative mating strategies (including several tactics such as sneaking, takeover and interception). The possible benefits from conflict among territorial males of both species is discussed.  相似文献
