Female‐limited intraspecific colour variation is a widely distributed trait within damselflies. Typically, one morph resembles the male (the andromorph) whereas one, or sometimes more, do not [the heteromorph(s)]. While several selective explanations have been offered, such as decreased harassment by males balanced by predation or lack of mating success, field data indicate that andromorphs and heteromorphs mate at equal frequencies in the field, and survive equally well. In this paper, I use a signal detection model to characterize the properties of a new male‐mimicry hypothesis, in which andromorphs are not only more similar to males, but are also encountered more by males. I show that this combination of frequency‐dependent and frequency‐independent factors readily combine to generate a balanced polymorphism. The model explains why morphs have similar mean mating frequencies, why the experimentally observed mating preferences of males vary between ponds, and why the frequency of andromorphs tends to rise with sex ratio.  相似文献

Colour polymorphisms are known to influence receiver behaviour, but how they affect a receiver's ability to detect and recognize individuals in nature is usually unknown. I hypothesized that polymorphic female damselflies represent an evolutionary stable strategy, maintained by trade‐offs between the relative apparency of morphs to male receivers. Using field experiments on Enallagma hageni and focal studies of E. hageni and Enallagma boreale, I tested for the first time the predictions that (i) green heteromorphs and blue andromorphs gain differential protection from sexual harassment via background crypsis and sexual mimicry, respectively, and (ii) female morphs behaviourally optimize their signal apparency to mate‐searching males. First, based on male reactions elicited by females, against a high‐contrast background, the two morphs did not differ in being detected by males, and once detected, they did not differ in being recognized (eliciting sexual reactions). However, on green ferns, heteromorphs were less likely to be detected (elicited only fly‐bys) than andromorphs, but once detected, the morphs did not differ in being recognized. In contrast, when perched on a dowel with two male signal distractors, andromorphs were detected less often, and once detected, they were recognized less often than heteromorphs. Second, in fields where females foraged, andromorphs perched higher on vegetation than heteromorphs and were more often in the vicinity of males. Neither harassment rates nor evasive behaviours differed between morphs. Males aggregated in high density near shore where solitary females were rare. Equilibrium frequencies of these and other colour morphs should reflect the relative ease with which receivers detect and recognize them in the context where they are encountered.  相似文献

Sex-specific predation on adult individuals is often predicted by different behaviour in males and females resulting from different reproductive strategies and social systems. High predation pressure and the need for biparental care are considered a possible ecological basis for the evolution of monogamy, the most puzzling social system in mammals. In species where adults and offspring are vulnerable to the same predators, males and females may protect their offspring to different extents because of conflicting demands of investment in current and future offspring. I present the first empirical data on age- and sex-specific predation pressure by top predators on a monogamous rodent and the sex-specific behavioural responses of the prey species to different rates of predation. During an annual predation peak, only offspring and adult males were killed but no females. Whereas males and females travelled similar distances at night before the period of high predation on offspring, males moved further during this period. At the same time, males and females increased their distance from their offspring but males stayed closer to them than females. As a consequence, the distance between the members of the pair increased during the predation peak. The males' behaviour could lead to their encountering predators more frequently which would reduce survival prospects. The different behaviour of males and females provides empirical evidence that males invest in the welfare of current offspring at the cost of higher predation risk whereas females protect their residual reproductive value. Bright plumage, song display, and aggressive resource defence in males may cause higher predation on males than on females during the breeding season. However, in birds, higher predation on females is sometimes observed. Parental investment may be high in females (egg-laying, incubation and feeding of offspring), which might lead to a high risk of predation. We studied predation by sparrowhawks Accipiter nisus in relation to behaviour in pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca where breeding males are more conspicuous than females in plumage and behaviour. Male pied flycatchers generally occupied more exposed perches than females. Females were more mobile and foraged more than males, especially prior to and during incubation. During the incubation and nestling stages, when predation on the sexes could be directly compared, sparrowhawks took about the same number of male and female pied flycatchers. During incubation, however, females spent about 77% of the day in the nest and were 4.7 times more vulnerable than males per unit of time available (i.e. outside the nest). A comparison with the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs , where hawks took more females than males, indicates that timing of breeding, foraging behaviour and parental roles of males and females affect predation risk.  相似文献

Aggressiveness in Two Male Morphs of the Bulb Mite Rhizoglyphus robini   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We studied differences in aggressiveness between two male morphs of the bulb mite Rhizoglyphus robini (Acari: Acaridae). Heteromorphic males have a thickened and sharply terminating third pair of legs, whereas homeomorphic males have unmodified legs. In another genus ( Caloglyphus ) of the family Acaridae, modified legs are used during fights to stab (often mortally) other males, but fights have not so far been observed in the genus Rhizoglyphus .
In this study we showed that in Rhizoglyphus robini males fight in a way similar to that previously described for the genus Caloglyphus. The presence of females increased the duration of aggressive interactions and caused earlier initiation, but fights were also observed in the absence of females. Pairs of heteromorphic males spent more time on aggressive interactions than did mixed pairs of heteromorphs and homeomorphs or pairs of homeomorphic males. Although the proportion of pairs involved in aggressive interactions did not differ between these three morph combinations, clasping of the opponent with legs, which is a typical behaviour of killer Caloglyphus males that precedes stabbing, occurred more often between pairs of heteromorphs than between mixed pairs and pairs of homeomorphs. This is consistent with our other finding that mortality attributable to male aggression was only recorded in pairs of males containing at least one heteromorphic male. We conclude that the modified legs of heteromorphic R. robini males function as a weapon in aggressive interactions between males and that, as previously described for the genus Caloglyphus , male morphs differ in aggressiveness.  相似文献

Trophically transmitted parasites may increase their transmission efficiency by altering the behaviour of infected hosts to increase their susceptibility to predation by target hosts (the next host in the life cycle). The parasite Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) reduces the vision of its fish intermediate hosts: its metacercariae lodge themselves in the eyes of fish and induce cataract formation, which gives them the opportunity to affect fish behaviour. We examined whether D. spathaceum eye flukes change the preference of fish for the surface layers of the water column or their escape behaviour, which could make the fish more vulnerable to predation by bird hosts. We also studied the influence of parasites on the susceptibility of fish to artificial aerial predators that were able to catch fish from the water surface. Infected and control fish did not differ in their preference for the surface layers but infected fish showed less escape behaviour when a black plate was drawn over the water surface. They were also more easily caught by human ‘predators’ dipping a net into the tank. Thus, infected fish should be easier prey for gulls and terns, implying that the ability of D. spathaceum eye flukes to alter fish behaviour may be a parasite strategy evolved to enhance transmission.  相似文献

Polymorphism in the nuptial colouration of male Threespine sticklebacks ( Garterosteus aculeatus L.) was studied. In Lake Wapato in Eastern Washington, approximately 14% of the breeding males develop typical red nuptial colouration while others develop various colours which were grouped into a non-red category. The hypothesis was tested that red males are adaptive in Lake Wapato as a result of sexual selection and differential egg predation.
In a series of mate preference tests, females demonstrated a significant preference for red males over non-red males. In a second experiment, using artiticially coloured non-red males, it was shown that the females are responding to the red colouration alone. This evidence suggests that one of the selective pressures maintaining the red morph is sexual selection.
In a stomach analysis of male and female sticklebacks collected from a breeding colony it was found that 51 % of the fish examined had stickleback eggs in their stomachs. Both male and female sticklebacks eat a large number of eggs; however, males eat significantly more eggs than females. Eggs were found to be most susceptible to predation during their first four days of development. Given that red ventral colouration has threat value, red males may also be adaptive because of a reduction in egg predation within their territories in contrast to non-red males.
One of the selective forces against red males is probably differential predation by trout ( Salmo gairdneri ). This trout predation has been shown to be extensive in Lake Wapato. The opposing selective forces discussed in this paper cannot maintain the polymorphism; they are only components of fitness of the colour morphs.  相似文献

In agroecosystems, parasitoids and predators may exert top-down regulation and predators for different reasons may avoid or give preference to parasitised prey, i.e., become an intraguild predator. The success of pest suppression with multiple natural enemies depends essentially on predator–prey dynamics and how this is affected by the interplay between predation and parasitism. We conducted a simple laboratory experiment to test whether predators distinguished parasitised prey from non-parasitised prey and to study how parasitism influenced predation. We used a host-parasitoid system, Spodoptera frugiperda and one of its generalist parasitoids, Campoletis flavicincta, and included two predators, the stinkbug Podisus nigrispinus and the earwig Euborellia annulipes. In the experiment, predators were offered a choice between non-parasitised and parasitised larvae. We observed how long it took for the predator to attack a larva, which prey was attacked first, and whether predators opted to consume the other prey after their initial attack. Our results suggest that, in general, female predators are less selective than males and predators are more likely to consume non-parasitised prey with this likelihood being directly proportional to the time taken until the first prey attack. We used statistical models to show that males opted to consume the other prey with a significantly higher probability if they attacked a parasitised larva first, while females did so with the same probability irrespective of which one they attacked first. These results highlight the importance of studies on predator–parasitoid interactions, as well as on coexistence mechanisms in agroecosystems. When parasitism mediates predator choice so that intraguild predation is avoided, natural enemy populations may be larger, thus increasing the probability of more successful biological control.  相似文献

Correlated traits are important from an evolutionary perspective as natural selection acting on one trait may indirectly affect other traits. Further, the response to selection can be constrained or hastened as a result of correlations. Because mating behaviour and body colour can dramatically affect fitness, a correlation between them can have important fitness ramifications. In this work, melanic (black) male mosquitofishes (Gambusia holbrooki) with temperature-sensitive body-colour expression are bred in captivity. Half of the sons of each melanic sire are reared at 19 degrees C (and express a black body colour) and half are reared at 31 degrees C (and express a silver body colour). The two colour morphs are placed in the same social setting and monitored for behavioural differences. Mating behaviour and colour are correlated traits. Mating behaviour differs markedly between the two phenotypes, despite high genetic relatedness. Melanic (black) phenotypes are more aggressive towards females, chasing them and attempting more matings than their silver siblings. Females avoid melanic-male mating attempts more than silver-male mating attempts. When males with temperature-sensitive colour expression are melanic and aggressive, they probably experience a very different selective regime in nature from when they are silver and less aggressive. Under some conditions (e.g. predation), melanic coloration and/or aggression is advantageous compared with silver coloration and/or less aggressive behaviour. However, under different conditions (e.g. high-frequency melanism), melanism and/or aggression appears to be disadvantageous and melanic males have reduced survival and reproduction. Selective advantages to each morph under different conditions may enable the long-term persistence of this temperature-sensitive genotype.  相似文献

Predatory behaviour seems to be more frequent in invasive gammaridean species than in native ones. This results in the exclusion of other, mostly native gammaridean species and a change in benthic communities. The present study analysed the influence of environmental factors (water temperature) and morphological factors (sex, body parts involved in catching and holding prey) on the predatory behaviour of Dikerogammarus villosus. A diet study of invasive relatives of D. villosus showed that predation intensity is especially high in spring and summer, that is, at increasing and high temperatures. Experiments with D. villosus in climate rooms at various temperatures, using the native Gammarus fossarum as prey, showed that the average predation rate by both sexes gradually increased over the temperature range from 5 to 30°C. Natural mortality during the experiments was negligible compared to losses due to predation. At each temperature, the predation rate by females was lower than that by males. Males showed a steep allometric growth of body parts involved in the process of catching and holding prey, compared to females at increasing body size in a number of measurements. This may explain the difference in predatory behaviour between males and females, which plays a role in intraguild predation a supposed mechanism for species displacement.  相似文献

Differences in predation risk may exert strong selective pressures on life history strategies of populations. We investigated the potential for predation to shape male mating strategies in an arboreal folivore, the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula Kerr). We predicted that possums in a tropical population exposed to high natural levels of predation would grow faster and reproduce earlier compared to those in temperate populations with lower predation. We trapped a population of possums in eucalypt woodland in northern Australia each month to measure life history traits and used microsatellites to genotype all individuals and assign paternity to all offspring. We observed very high levels of male-biased predation, with almost 60% of marked male possums being eaten by pythons, presumably as a result of their greater mobility due to mate-searching. Male reproductive success was also highly skewed, with younger, larger males fathering significantly more offspring. This result contrasts with previous studies of temperate populations experiencing low levels of predation, where older males were larger and the most reproductively successful. Our results suggest that in populations exposed to high levels of predation, male possums invest in increased growth earlier in life, in order to maximise their mating potential. This strategy is feasible because predation limits competition from older males and means that delaying reproduction carries a risk of failing to reproduce at all. Our results show that life histories are variable traits that can match regional predation environments in mammal species with widespread distributions.  相似文献

The mutual predatory behaviour between Gammarus pulex (Linnaeus, 1758) and Gammarus duebeni celticus (Stock & Pinkster, 1970) is described. The implications of the predatory nature of these species are discussed in terms of the feeding ecology of Gammarus and other amphipods. Predation rates by males on moulted congeneric females are assessed and compared. When males are present at the moult of a congeneric female, 100%of females are eaten in both species/sex combinations. When females are allowed to recover from moulting prior to presentation to a congeneric male, predation rates are significantly reduced in both species. However, significantly more G. d. celticus females are eaten by G. pulex males compared with the reciprocal situation. The predatory 'clumping' behaviour of both species is described and shown to be a form of feeding frenzy upon congenerics. Clumping behaviour also results in significantly higher rates of congeneric predation on G. d. celticus females than on G. pulex females. Support is thus given to the hypothesis that differential predation by males on moulted females may be the primary mechanism by which the introduced G. pulex has displaced the native Irish species G. d. celticus . The implications of amphipod congeneric predation are discussed in terms of observed patterns of interspecific coexistence and exclusion.  相似文献

Uncovering mate choice and factors that lead to the choice are very important to understanding sexual selection in evolutionary change. Cicadas are known for their loud sounds produced by males using the timbals. However, males in certain cicada species emit 2 kinds of sounds using respectively timbals and stridulatory organs, and females may produce their own sounds to respond to males. What has never been considered is the mate choice in such cicada species. Here, we investigate the sexual selection and potential impact of predation pressure on mate choice in the cicada Subpsaltria yangi Chen. It possesses stridulatory sound-producing organs in both sexes in addition to the timbals in males. Results show that males producing calling songs with shorter timbal–stridulatory sound intervals and a higher call rate achieved greater mating success. No morphological traits were found to be correlated with mating success in both sexes, suggesting neither males nor females display mate preference for the opposite sex based on morphological traits. Males do not discriminate among responding females during mate searching, which may be due to the high energy costs associated with their unusual mate-seeking activity and the male-biased predation pressure. Females generally mate once but a minority of them re-mated after oviposition which, combined with the desirable acoustic traits of males, suggest females may maximize their reproductive success by choosing a high-quality male in the first place. This study contributes to our understanding mechanisms of sexual selection in cicadas and other insects suffering selective pressure from predators.  相似文献

Abstract:  In Ordovician ostracodes (genus Incisua ) a new kind of sexual dimorphism is described, which is the first example among this group with males being the heteromorphs. The valves of males are larger and less frequent than the females, and are characterized by having a furrow in the ventral part. Observations of breeding activities of male and female crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) in a natural stream population during the explosive spring breeding period, and supplemental laboratory observations, indicate a promiscuous mating system characterized by intense intermale aggression. Males wandered extensively over the substrate, fought frequently with each other, and attempted to disrupt copulating pairs. Larger males (as distinguished by large chela size) more frequently initiated and won aggressive encounters and interrupted copulating pairs more successfully than smaller males, but were subjected to greater predation. Intense intermale aggression ceased when females sequestered themselves under rocks in the stream or were removed from the laboratory population. Brief resistance by females to approaching males, along with sequestering behaviour, suggests that female choice may also occur.  相似文献

Mating can increase an individual''s risk of mortality by predation. In response to predation hazards, males in some species court females less often, but alternatively engage in coerced copulations more frequently and females become less selective. Such predator-mediated shifts in mating tactics may result in higher levels of multiple inseminations in females and, thus, in greater frequencies of females with broods of mixed paternity. We tested this hypothesis using two polymorphic microsatellite loci to estimate conservatively multiple paternity in broods of female guppies (Poecilia reticulata) originating from ten natural populations that have evolved under different fish predation regimes in Trinidad. The frequency of broods that were multiply sired was significantly greater on average in populations experiencing high predation pressure compared to populations experiencing a relatively low predation risk. These results suggest that the intensity of male sperm competition covaries geographically with predation pressure in this species and that the local risk of predation mediates the opportunity for sexual selection within populations.  相似文献

Activation of the immune system in insects has been shown to be costly in the laboratory setting, but experimental studies in the field are lacking. The costs of immunity in the wild may be different to those in the laboratory because animals in the wild are simultaneously subjected to a suite of selective agents. We have measured the costs of immune system activation in a wild population of the territorial damselfly Calopteryx splendens. Immune-challenged males were found to be less likely to be territorial and had lower overall survival rates than control or sham-manipulated males. Because territorial males have a higher mating success than nonterritorial males, this result suggests that immune-challenged males are also likely to suffer reduced mating success. However, the activation of the immune system as such did not increase predation risk; this occurred due to a combination of the former with a reduced territory-holding potential. As such, immune-challenged males not holding a territory were most susceptible to predation by birds. The size of the wing spots, a known sexually selected male trait, predicted territorial behaviour in control and sham-manipulated males, but not in immune-challenged males. Our data show that immune system activation can have several costs acting in unison and that ubiquitous ecological interactions, such as predation, may affect trade-offs between immunity and other life history traits.  相似文献

In juvenile salmon and trout, there seems to be a positive phenotypic correlation between individual aggression level and growth rate. Aggressive fish are dominant, and they obtain and defend territories, giving them access to good feeding sites. Being aggressive may increase predation risk, and may also carry costs such as increased metabolic demand, with effects on growth. To test the hypothesis that there is a trade-off between individual growth rate and aggression, we mated 12 female coho salmon with two unique males each, creating 24 full-sibling families. Growth of individually marked fish from each family was estimated in a situation where food could not be monopolized. Thereafter, individual fish were tested for mirror-elicited agonistic behaviour. We found significant variation between families in early growth rate, with a high heritability (1.04). There was also significant between-family variation in agonistic behaviour, but activity was generally low and heritability was low (0.25) and not significant. Growth rate and agonistic behaviour were negatively correlated. These results imply that aggressive behaviour has an energetic cost. Summary Prior work (Dugatkin, 1991a) has argued that guppies, originating from an area of high predation pressure, employ the Tit-For-Tat strategy during predator inspection visits. Guppies from the high predation site show all three characteristics associated with Tit-For-Tat; nice, retaliatory and forgiving behaviour. Since predation is the major selective force favouring Tit-For-Tat during predator inspection, we predicted fish from an area of low predation would not display the Tit-For-Tat strategy. Our results confirm this prediction; males display retaliatory, but not nice and forgiving behaviour, while females display none of the three characteristics. Thus as predation pressure changes, so too does the conditional nature of the cooperative strategy used during predator inspection.  相似文献

Males that produce conspicuous mate attraction signals are often at high risk of predation from eavesdropping predators. Females of such species typically search for signalling males and their higher motility may also place them at risk. The relative predation risk faced by males and females in the context of mate-finding using long-distance signals has rarely been investigated. In this study, we show, using a combination of diet analysis and behavioural experiments, that katydid females, who do not produce acoustic signals, are at higher risk of predation from a major bat predator, Megaderma spasma, than calling males. Female katydids were represented in much higher numbers than males in the culled remains beneath roosts of M. spasma. Playback experiments using katydid calls revealed that male calls were approached in only about one-third of the trials overall, whereas tethered, flying katydids were always approached and attacked. Our results question the idea that necessary costs of mate-finding, including risk of predation, are higher in signalling males than in searching females.  相似文献
