Odors often produce different sensations when presented in front of the nose or intraorally, when eaten. It is a long-standing question whether these differences in sensations are due, for example, to the additional mechanical sensations elicited by the food in the mouth or additional odor release during mastication. To study this phenomenon in detail, a stimulation technique has been developed that allows controlled ortho- or retronasal presentation of odorous stimuli. Results from psychophysical, electrophysiological, and imaging studies suggest that there are clear differences in the perception of ortho- and retronasal stimuli. This 'duality of the sense of smell' is also observed in a clinical context where some patients exhibit good retronasal olfactory function with little or no orthonasal function left, and vice versa. The differences between ortho- and retronasal perception of odors are thought to be, at least partly, due to absorption of odors to the olfactory epithelium, which appears to differ in relation to the direction of the airflow across the olfactory epithelium.  相似文献

To gain insight into which parameters of neural activity are important in shaping the perception of odors, we combined a behavioral measure of odor perception with optical imaging of odor representations at the level of receptor neuron input to the rat olfactory bulb. Instead of the typical test of an animal's ability to discriminate two familiar odorants by exhibiting an operant response, we used a spontaneously expressed response to a novel odorant—exploratory sniffing—as a measure of odor perception. This assay allowed us to measure the speed with which rats perform spontaneous odor discriminations. With this paradigm, rats discriminated and began responding to a novel odorant in as little as 140 ms. This time is comparable to that measured in earlier studies using operant behavioral readouts after extensive training. In a subset of these trials, we simultaneously imaged receptor neuron input to the dorsal olfactory bulb with near-millisecond temporal resolution as the animal sampled and then responded to the novel odorant. The imaging data revealed that the bulk of the discrimination time can be attributed to the peripheral events underlying odorant detection: receptor input arrives at the olfactory bulb 100–150 ms after inhalation begins, leaving only 50–100 ms for central processing and response initiation. In most trials, odor discrimination had occurred even before the initial barrage of receptor neuron firing had ceased and before spatial maps of activity across glomeruli had fully developed. These results suggest a coding strategy in which the earliest-activated glomeruli play a major role in the initial perception of odor quality, and place constraints on coding and processing schemes based on simple changes in spike rate.  相似文献

Our natural body odor goes through several stages of age-dependent changes in chemical composition as we grow older. Similar changes have been reported for several animal species and are thought to facilitate age discrimination of an individual based on body odors, alone. We sought to determine whether humans are able to discriminate between body odor of humans of different ages. Body odors were sampled from three distinct age groups: Young (20-30 years old), Middle-age (45-55), and Old-age (75-95) individuals. Perceptual ratings and age discrimination performance were assessed in 41 young participants. There were significant differences in ratings of both intensity and pleasantness, where body odors from the Old-age group were rated as less intense and less unpleasant than body odors originating from Young and Middle-age donors. Participants were able to discriminate between age categories, with body odor from Old-age donors mediating the effect also after removing variance explained by intensity differences. Similarly, participants were able to correctly assign age labels to body odors originating from Old-age donors but not to body odors originating from other age groups. This experiment suggests that, akin to other animals, humans are able to discriminate age based on body odor alone and that this effect is mediated mainly by body odors emitted by individuals of old age.  相似文献

Intensity and pleasantness ratings of various concentrationsof sucrose, caffeine and NaCl were examined in two culturallydifferent groups of subjects. One group was made up of studentsof European descent born in the United States while the othergroup was made up of students of Chinese descent born in Taiwan.A subsample of subjects from each group was retested similarlywith cookies containing varying levels of sucrose. The Taiwanesesubjects rated sucrose as tasting sweeter regardless of whetherit was in solution or cookies. Group differences in pleasantnessratings depended upon whether the sucrose was presented in acookie or a solution. The Taiwanese students assigned highersweetness ratings to sucrose in solution when compared to USstudents. When the sucrose was in cookies, the Taiwanese groupassigned higher pleasantness ratings at the lower sucrose concentrations. At the higher sucrose concentrations, the US group assignedhigher pleasantness ratings. There was no significant ethniceffect upon rated bitterness or pleasantness of caffeine. Taiwaneserated low concentrations of salt as tasting saltier and highconcentrations of salt as tasting less salty when compared toUS students. The Taiwanese generally rated the sodium chloridesolutions as tasting more pleasant. These group differencesmay be related to the way sucrose and salt are used in the twocultures.  相似文献

The effects of adaptation on the perception of similar and dissimilar odors   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Adaptation among several odors was studied using a multiple-alternative,forced-choice procedure where six concentrations of each odorantand three blanks were presented in a random sequence beforeand after adaptation to each of the odors. Adaptation was expressedin terms of changes in both identification threshold and perceivedintensity. In the first experiment, Galaxolide® (a syntheticisochroman musk) and 5-androst-16-en-3-one (androstenone) showedno cross-adaptation in spite of sharing, for some people, amusky note. In the second experiment, Galaxolide and Thibetolide®(a synthetic macrocyclic musk) showed significant, but asymmetric,cross-adaptation. When Galaxolide was the adapting stimulus, shifts in indentification threshold and magnitude estimatesfor Thibetolide were not significantly different from thoseobtained for Galaxolide, a result consistent with the conclusionthat cross-adaptation was as effective as self-adaptation. WhenThibetolide was the adapting stimulus, shifts in identificationthreshold and magnitude estimates for Galaxolide were significantlyless than those obtained for Thibetolide, suggesting that cross-adaptationwas less effective. This result is puzzling given the perceptualsimilarity of these two musky compounds: subjects did not distinguishbetween them during random presentation. The distinct odorsof amyl acetate (banana) and d-limonene (orange) showed no cross-adaptationin either experiment.  相似文献

Bank voles detect and discriminate other organisms, e.g., predators versus conspecifics, based on olfactory clues like urine, feces, or scent marks. The present field enclosure experiment was set up to determine whether scented food is sufficient for inducing such differentiated reactions in bank voles. Fourteen different odors were tested, divided into four categories: (1) terrestrial predators, (2) avian predators, (3) conspecifics, and (4) neutral origin (human, dog, solvent-treated, and unscented). The odors were extracted with methanol from pellets or feces, or were an artificial substitute. To test the influence of odors on the foraging behavior of voles, artificial food patches containing scented feeders were used. The feeders were cleaned and refilled daily with a calibrated amount of food sprayed with 1 ml of a different odor randomly chosen. The patches were also equipped with monochromatic cameras to monitor the occurrences of voles around the feeders. Both the visits at scented feeders and food consumption were analyzed for each odor. The results show that relative to their foraging activity on unscented food, bank voles significantly reduce it on food scented with odors of terrestrial predators, and increase it in the presence of conspecific odors. Their foraging activity was not affected by neutral scent, nor by scents from avian predators. These results prove that bank voles react to scented food in a way that varies according to the source of odor, even in the semi-natural conditions of an outdoor enclosure.  相似文献

The judgment of pleasantness/unpleasantness is the prominent reaction to the olfactory world. In human adults, the hedonic valence of odor perception is affected by various factors, among which is an individual's lexical knowledge about smells. The present study examined whether such top-down effects of lexical knowledge on hedonic judgment of olfactory input are similar in children (5-6 years) and adults (20-25 years). In both groups, the lexical knowledge was found to influence the perception of the least emotional (or most neutral) odors: the pleasantness of the smells of banana and mint was enhanced when participants were given the corresponding odor label before olfactory sensation. These results lend support to the notion that, during childhood, smells are not only encoded perceptually but that verbal encoding also steers contextual effects that may be prominent factors in the early memorization and categorization of odors.  相似文献

Social insects have an efficient recognition system that guarantees social cohesion and protection against intruders in their colonies and territories. However, the energy costs in constant conflicts with neighboring colonies could promote a reduction in the fitness of colonies. Here, we evaluated the effect of previous exposure to allocolonial odor and the consumption of similar food resources on aggressive behavior and choice of allocolonial cues in Nasutitermes aff. coxipoensis (Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae). Our results showed that intercolonial aggressiveness was not affected by previous exposure to allocolonial odor and by the consumption of similar food resources. However, individuals previously exposed to allocolonial odor were more attracted to these odors than individuals who had no prior exposure to allocolonial odor. In addition, individuals from colonies of N. aff. coxipoensis that use similar food resources increased alertness via a greater number of vibration than individuals who consumed different food resources. In general, our results indicate that colonies of N. aff coxipoensis perceive allocolonial cues that have been previously exposed and that the consumption of similar resources triggers an alert signal between individuals. Additional studies are necessary to assess how widespread this capacity of perception is present among the different Isoptera groups and the consequences of colony recognition odor cues on termite space use.  相似文献

Using the public survey “The Top 100 Japanese Rural Landscapes” conducted by Asahi Shimbun Newspaper Company in 2008, this study attempted to analyze public perception of rural landscapes and their cultural value. A total of 3,024 nominated sites were given coordinates and combined with land use and topographic datasets using a GIS, and classified into several landscape types using cluster analysis. Keywords that appeared frequently in the nominations were extracted using a text-mining tool and used to interpret the cultural value of each type. As a result, the nominated sites were divided into six types. The majority of nominated sites were classified as Forest Type (forest 88%) and associated with the keywords traditional rural lifestyle, and sites to visit. Mixed Type (forest 50%, paddy field 20%, and other agricultural fields 10%) were associated with biodiversity and conservation activities, and Paddy Field Type (paddy field 60%) was significantly associated with Furusato (Home). Urban and Suburban Type sites (built-up land 50%) were concentrated in the Kanto Region and nominated mainly by local citizens for their nature activities. There was also the Other Agricultural Type, which made up 10% each of the nominations, and the Coastal Type, which was mostly nominated by ocean-related organizations and rarely nominated by the general public. Additionally, the concept of biodiversity seemed to be difficult for the public to understand. The results indicated that future studies should consider public perception of the variety of Satoyama landscapes and how it should be incorporated into future Satoyama management strategy.  相似文献

Coding of odors by a receptor repertoire   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
Hallem EA  Carlson JR 《Cell》2006,125(1):143-160
We provide a systematic analysis of how odor quality, quantity, and duration are encoded by the odorant receptor repertoire of the Drosophila antenna. We test the receptors with a panel of over 100 odors and find that strong responses are sparse, with response density dependent on chemical class. Individual receptors range along a continuum from narrowly tuned to broadly tuned. Broadly tuned receptors are most sensitive to structurally similar odorants. Strikingly, inhibitory responses are widespread among receptors. The temporal dynamics of the receptor repertoire provide a rich representation of odor quality, quantity, and duration. Receptors with similar odor sensitivity often map to widely dispersed glomeruli in the antennal lobe. We construct a multidimensional "odor space" based on the responses of each individual receptor and find that the positions of odors depend on their chemical class, concentration, and molecular complexity. The space provides a basis for predicting behavioral responses to odors.  相似文献

Understanding patterns and underlying processes of human cultural diversity has been a major challenge in evolutionary anthropology. Recent developments in the study of cultural macro-evolution have illuminated various novel aspects of cultural phenomena at the population level. However, limitations in data availability have constrained previous analyses to use simplest models ignoring factors that potentially affect cultural evolutionary dynamics. Here, we focus on two such factors: accumulated effects of cultural transmission between populations over time and variation in social influence among populations. As a test case, we analyze data on the hinoeuma fertility drop, the Japanese nation-wide drastic decline in the number of births caused by a culturally-transmitted superstition recurring every sixty years, to show that these factors do play significant roles. Specifically, our results suggest that transmission of the superstition in a short timescale has tended to occur among neighboring populations, while transmission in a long timescale is likely to have occurred between populations culturally close to each other, with the cultural closeness being measured by similarity in dialects. The results also indicate a special role played by a population occupying a center in a language–distance network (the cultural center) in the spread of the superstition.  相似文献

Half a century has passed since the first report of the influence of odors on mice. Odors are known to influence behavior (signaling effect) and affect the physiology (primer effect) of mice. This review focuses on summarizing the primer effects found so far in female and male mice. Odors from conspecifics of the opposite sex had the tendency to enhance reproductive activities, whereas odors from conspecifics of the same sex diminish them. Only 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, one of the odor components identified in group-housed females, has been reported to have a suppressive influence on both males and females by lowering reproductive activities. Studies showed progress from the discovery of phenomena to the identification of odor components that cause such changes in reproductive organs and related neuroendocrinological changes. Compared to studies on the mechanisms of primer effects in females, the mechanisms in males are not yet clarified, and detailed studies on effects on the reproductive organs are still in primitive stages especially for males. Hypotheses on the influence of changes in the concentration of testosterone, estrogen, and prolactin on spermatogenesis and sperm maturation after exposure to odors are discussed.  相似文献

It is often assumed that parent-to-child cultural transmission leads to similarities and differences among groups evolving through descent with modification (“phylogenesis”). Similarly, cultural transmission between peers, and between adults and children who are not their offspring, is widely believed to result in groups exchanging cultural traits (“ethnogenesis”). However, neither of these assumptions has been examined empirically. Here, we test them using ethnographic data on craft learning in Iranian tribal populations and the cladistic method of phylogenetic analysis. We find that parent-to-child transmission dominates learning during childhood, but the other two forms of interindividual transmission become more important in later periods. The latter do not, however, appear to have resulted in extensive exchange of cultural traits among tribes. Instead we find that most of the variation among the tribes' craft assemblages can be explained by descent with modification. This can be accounted for by the fact that weavers usually only share their knowledge with members of their own tribe and are prevented from interacting with women from other groups by social norms. These findings demonstrate that the relationship between processes of cultural evolution at the level of the individual and processes of cultural evolution at the level of the group is more complex than is usually acknowledged, and highlight the need for more integrated studies of the processes operating at both scales.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the ability of blind (previously sighted) and blindfolded (sighted) subjects in reconstructing and identifying a number of visual targets transformed into equivalent musical representations. Visual images are deconstructed through a process which selectively segregates different features of the image into separate packages. These are then encoded in sound and presented as a polyphonic musical melody which resembles a Baroque fugue with many voices, allowing subjects to analyse the component voices selectively in combination, or separately in sequence, in a manner which allows a subject to patch together and bind the different features of the object mentally into a mental percept of a single recognizable entity. The visual targets used in this study included a variety of geometrical figures, simple high-contrast line drawings of man-made objects, natural and urban scenes, etc., translated into sound and presented to the subject in polyphonic musical form.  相似文献

Olfactory testing was performed in two groups of young men aged 18–22 years with and without sexual experience. Multichannel EEG was recorded at rest and upon the presentation of 45 natural body odors of young women in different phases of the menstrual cycle. The odors were either intact or mixed with J’Adore L’Absolu perfume (Christian Dior) with or without a female pheromone. Changes in spectral power within narrow frequency ranges in response to olfactory stimulation were estimated by multivariate analysis of variance. It was found that background electrical activity of the brain in young men with regular sex life had lower spectral power in all frequency ranges. The EEG responses to the intact olfactory stimuli in all young men were associated with a decrease in spectral power in the majority of the frequency ranges and especially in the θ2 and high- and low-frequency α rhythms. Presentation of female odors masked with a perfume resulted in bidirectional EEG responses; i.e., the spectral power in the θ1 and β1 ranges increased or decreased depending on the sexual experience of men and the menstrual cycle phase of a female donor as compared with an intact odor. The comparison of the EEG responses to intact or perfume-masked odors showed that individual odor remains dominant.  相似文献

A study of cultural transmission in Taiwan   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Our study of cultural transmission in Taiwan is based on a survey of 1000 students, their families, and friends, for characters ranging from religion to various customs and beliefs, as well as entertainment and hygienic habits. The effects of father, mother, and an older sib on a propositus are tested by an additive model of transmission, using a novel statistical procedure, and compared with correlations with friends. For many traits there exist significant influences; older sibs are almost as important as father and mother, with effects differing somewhat with their sex. Formulas for recurrences and equilibrium frequency of a cultural character for which father, mother, and sib are active in transmission are given in the appendices along with formulas for estimation of their effects from real data. This research was supported in part by grant NIH GM 20467 and NIH GM 20816. In early part of this investigation K.H.C. was supported by a grant to SIMS from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.  相似文献
