The green hydra, Hydra viridissima, has three sexes: hermaphrodite, male, and female. I investigated the reproductive strategies of the green hydra and the relationship between asexual budding and sexual reproduction. The proportion of mature individuals in the asexually reproducing population increased with increasing temperature. Sexual reproduction did not interrupt asexual budding in hermaphrodites or males; sexual reproduction did interrupt asexual budding in females. Sexual reproduction also resulted in exponential population growth during the reproductive season. The number of asexual buds on each parental individual was positively correlated with the parental individual size in asexual individuals and in males. The same positive correlation was found between the number of testicles and the size of males. These correlations reflect a common tendency in asexual and sexual reproduction: larger parental individuals have a greater number of propagules or gametes. No correlation was found between size and buds or size and gonads in hermaphrodites; hermaphrodites had at most one asexual bud and were significantly larger than males, females, and asexual individuals. The larger size of hermaphrodites supports the hypothesis that producing both female and male gonads is more energetically costly than producing only one type of gamete (gonochorism).  相似文献

Crustaceans in the order Spinicaudata display a broad range of reproductive strategies, ranging from pure hermaphroditism to pure dioecy (separate males and females), and intermediate combinations. One particularly interesting genus of these “clam shrimps” is Eulimnadia. Based on offspring sex ratios, it has been suggested that all members of the genus are androdioecious: populations consist of mixtures of males and hermaphrodites. However, only two of the ~40 species in this genus have been examined histologically to confirm the presence of ovotestes in the purported hermaphrodites of this group. Here, we report both sex ratio and histological evidence showing that populations of five additional Eulimnadia species from India and Thailand are indeed mixes of males and hermaphrodites (four species) or hermaphrodite only (one species). Sex ratios of adults and offspring from isolated hermaphrodites are in accordance with those previously reported for 15 Eulimnadia species, and histological assays of four of the five species show the presence of both testicular and ovarian tissue in these hermaphrodites. As has been previously reported, the testicular tissue in members of these Eulimnadia spp. is located in a small section at the distal end of the gonad. In addition, the sperm produced in these hermaphrodites forms distinct plaques of compacted chromatin. Overall, these data are consistent with a single origin of hermaphroditism in Eulimnadia, and support the notion that all members of the genus are either androdioecious or all‐hermaphroditic.  相似文献

Brooding and the evolution of hermaphroditism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been suggested that hermaphroditism may evolve when the resources that females can profitably allocate to ova is limited by factors such as lack of brooding space. Spare resources could then be allocated to produce male gametes in a hermaphrodite. A model is developed to investigate the conditions under which this will occur. Hermaphrodites will displace males (and females) if the hermaphrodites produce at least half as many male gametes as a male. If the hermaphrodite produces less than half the number of gametes produced by a male then a stable equilibrium arises where males and hermaphrodites coexist. In this situation the frequency of males is determined by the ratio of the numbers of male gametes produced by hermaphrodites to the numbers produced by males.  相似文献

Hermaphrodites were detected in diploid and polyploid isolates of population 86-Va of Meloidogyne hapla. Young hermaphrodites are indistinguishable from normal females. Initially, hermaphrodite ovaries are filled with oocytes at various stages of development. Hermaphroditism is expressed later when young oocytes in the early pachytene region of the growth zone suddenly advance to diakinesis and proceed with maturation divisions, resulting in spermatid production. Spermatogenesis may be initiated shortly after the fourth molt, or later, after a female has produced some eggs. Spermatogenesis may occur in one or both gonads, and it may be initiated in one gonad before the other. Once initiated, spermatogenesis continues for the entire reproductive life of the hermaphrodite. Several thousand spermatozoa accumulate in the ovotestis. Because they do not pass through the oviduct into the spermatotheca, they do not take part in reproduction (nonfunctional hermaphroditism). Among the progeny of hermaphrodites, ca. 50% are hermaphroditic, and the remainder are apparently normal females which, however, produce about 50% hermaphroditic progeny. Two temperature regimes (20-23 C and 27-30 C) did not influence the percentage of hermaphrodites among the progeny. Hermaphroditism could not be transmitted to nonhermaphroditic isolates following attempted crosses between males of hermaphroditic and females of nonhermaphroditic isolates. Although this result suggests cytoplasmic rather than nuclear inheritance, this conclusion is not definitive.  相似文献

Gonads of young and adultNemipterus bathybius andN. virgatus were examined histologically. In youngN. bathybius males, the testis is composed of a dorsal and a ventral zone separated by thin connective tissue. A duct runs through the center of the dorsal zone, and has an opening on the ventromedian surface of the body, separate from the male genital pore. Along with the start of spermatogenesis in the ventral zone, germ cells distributed in the dorsal zone also begin spermatogenesis and eventually develop into spermatozoa. Consequently, in mature testes the sperm sinuses are formed to enclose the dorsal duct, leaving a small number of germ cells, including oviform cells, retained in the lamellar projections of the duct. Testes ofNvirgatus also have essentially the same histological characteristics. No trace of testicular tissue is present in the ovaries, except in four cases of intersexual gonads found in both nemipterid species. It is concluded that the dorsal duct and its lamellar projections are remnants of the ovarian cavityoviduct system and ovigerous lamellae of the ovarian portion of the gonad, and that these two nemipterid species are rudimentary hermaphrodites in which males have bisexual gonads of the delimited type in their juvenile stages.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in sex ratio and size‐related sex reversal of the protogynous hermaphroditic Cephalopholis taeniops were studied from histological and population data of 218 individuals captured by hook and line, July 2009–November 2012, in Cape Verde archipelago. This study showed that C. taeniops have a diandric protogynous hermaphrodite sexual model, with young individuals undergoing bisexual development and hermaphrodites above 28 cm. All gonads had a bisexual immature stage with primary and secondary males. Primary males possibly originate from immature bisexual individuals, whereas secondary males likely result from females that have already reproduced and changed sex.  相似文献

Summary This study was conducted to define the range of phenotypic expression and mode of inheritance of XX sex reversal in the cocker spaniel dog. Breeding experiments produced F1, F1BC, and F2 generations in which 29 XX true hermaphrodites and 3 XX males were defined by chromosome constitution, serial histologic sections of the gonads, and examination of the internal and external genitalia. In XX true hermaphrodites, the most common combination of gonads was bilateral ovotestes, followed by ovotestis and ovary, then ovotestis and testis. The amount of testicular tissue in the two gonads was closely correlated within each true hermaphrodite. The distribution of testicular tissue within ovotestes of true hermaphrodites was consistent with the hypothesis that testicular differentiation is initiated in the center of the gonad and spreads outward. XX males had bilateral aspermatogenic testes and the internal ducts and external genitalia were more masculinized than in true hermaphrodites. Results of breeding experiments are consistent with autosomal recessive inheritance, the affected phenotype being expressed only in dogs with an XX chromosome constitution. The phenotypic expression and mode of inheritance of this disorder is compared to XX sex reversal in humans and other animals.  相似文献

Synopsis Gulf of California populations of Serranus fasciatus are composed of functional simultaneous hermaphrodites and males. This is the first serranid known to have this sexual pattern which is functionally intermediate between the typical serranid patterns of simultaneous and protogynous hermaphroditism. Males of S. fasciatus are derived from hermaphrodites by resorption of ovarian tissue and proliferation of the extant testicular band. Distinct sexual roles are evident in spawning events. Hermaphrodites gain female function by pair spawning with males (124 and 125 observed spawns) and rarely with other hermaphrodites (1 of 125). Hermaphrodites gain male function by sneak spawning (9 of 125) and rarely by pair spawning with other hermaphrodites. Males exclusively pair spawned with hermaphrodites. Despite its unusual sexual pattern, S. fasciatus appears allied with other Serranus species based on similarities in gonad morphology.  相似文献

In dioecious species, females typically allocate more resources to reproduction and incur greater costs of reproduction than males. In gynodioecious species, sex-based differences in reproductive allocation (RA) and costs have been less studied. Such knowledge, however, is relevant to address how females establish and increase in frequency in populations. We examine RA and reproductive costs by comparing fruit set, the proportion of biomass allocated to reproduction, and the responses of fruit set and vegetative growth to shoot defoliation in females and hermaphrodites in gynodioecious Leucopogon melaleucoides. Relative to hermaphrodites, females exhibited a two-fold fruit set advantage. Female fruit set increased proportionately with flower number, but hermaphrodite fruit set was reduced on plants with more flowers. Sex-based differences in allocation to other traits were small. Thus, female RA at flowering was similar to hermaphrodite RA, but was 1.4-fold greater at fruiting. Relative to controls, defoliation reduced fruit set and the percentage of shoots that produced new vegetative growth similarly in both sexes. However, females had a lower proportion of shoots with new growth overall. Further, defoliation on females reduced the dry mass of new growth by 44% compared with controls, whereas hermaphrodites were not affected. These results indicate a trade-off between reproduction and vegetative growth, and greater female costs of reproduction, particularly under resource-limiting conditions. In the absence of compensatory traits to offset higher female reproductive costs, such trade-offs have the potential to retard the spread of females in gynodioecious populations.  相似文献

Summary Nine XX true hermaphrodites and two XX males were discovered in a family of American cocker spaniels. The true hermaphrodites were partially-masculinized females with ovotestes; the XX males had malformed male external genitalia and cryptorchid aspermatogenic testes. Wolffian and Mullerian duct derivatives were present in both true hermaphrodites and XX males. All four sires of sex-reversed dogs were normal XY males; five of the dams were anatomically normal females and one was an XX true hermaphrodite. A second true hermaphrodite reproduced as a female, producing anatomically normal offspring. All matings that produced sex-reversed offspring were consanguineous. Matings of the parents of sex-reversed cocker spaniels to normal beagles with no family history of intersexuality produced only normal offspring. Examination of G-banded karyotypes of the affected animals, their parents, and siblings, revealed no structural anomalies of the chromosomes that were consistently associated with sex-reversal.In assays for serologically-detectable H-Y antigen, the group of XX true hermaphrodites and the group of XX males had mean levels of the antigen not significantly different from that in normal male controls. Female parents of sex-reversed dogs and some of their female siblings were typed H-Y antigen positive, but the mean level of the antigen in this group was less than that of normal male controls. It is proposed that XX sex reversal in cocker spaniels is due to a mutant gene which when homozygous in females, results in a level of H-Y antigen similar to that found in normal males and the gonads develop as ovotestes or testes. When the gene is heterozygous in females, the level of serologically-detectable H-Y antigen is lowr than that found in normal males and the gonads develop as normal ovaries. The persistence of Mullerian structures in the presence of testicular tissue suggests that Mullerian inhibiting substance is deficient or ineffective in its action in this condition.Supported by NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship IF32 HL05515, University of Pennsylvania Genetics Center Grant, No. GM 20138, and NIH grants AI-19456, HD 17049, and HD 14357; and a grant from the Mrs. Cheever Porter Foundation.  相似文献

Simultaneous hermaphroditism is an infrequent mode of reproduction among bivalves of the family Unionidae: only five of the 220 North American species are simultaneous hermaphrodites. However, hermaphroditic individuals of otherwise predominantly dioecious species have been encountered in 30 of I01 species examined. These hermaphroditic individuals as well as simultaneous hermaphrodites can exhibit considerable variability in the ratio of spermatogenic: oogenic tissue within the gonad, and the purposes of this paper are to determine the underlying causes of both this variability and the occurrence of occasional hermaphroditic individuals among dioecious species. Results indicate that the ratio of male: female gonodal tissue of a simultaneous hermaphrodite is bimodally distributed, and several hypotheses to account for this observation are presented. It is proposed that populations occurring in different habitats and under conditions of different individual density are subject to fundamentally different sexual selection pressures acting on ratios of allocation to male and female gametes. Occasional hermaphroditism among otherwise predominantly dioecious species was in this study associated with infection of the gonads by digenean trematodes. A model of sexual determination among unionids presented in this paper proposes that sex is determined by genetically controlled hormone levels: occasional hermaphrodites result from alterations in these hormone levels caused by developmental errors and trematodal infections which mimic the results of such errors. Predictions of this model are consistent with observed levels of variability in male: females gonadal tissue among occasional hermaphrodites.  相似文献

Sexual patterns of the parrotfish,Calotomus japonicus, were studied using fifteen specimens collected in February and April, 1990, near Makurazaki, Kagoshima Prefecture. The males ranged from 265 to 345 mm SL, and were larger than the females on average. Most females ranged from 202 to 260 mm SL, but a female of 305 mm SL was obtained. Sexual dichromatism was conspicuous. Histological examination of the gonads and low values of gonado-somatic indices of both males and females indicated that they were not in spawning season. It was concluded that C.japonicus is a protogynous hermaphrodite, because all male specimens had secondary testes. It was pointed out that the present species has a weak size-sex relationship. Because the specimens examined did not include primary males, it is suggested that primary males are relatively rare, if they occur at all.  相似文献

The self-fertile hermaphrodites of C. elegans and C. briggsae evolved from female ancestors by acquiring limited spermatogenesis. Initiation of C. elegans hermaphrodite spermatogenesis requires germline translational repression of the female-promoting gene tra-2, which allows derepression of the three male-promoting fem genes. Cessation of hermaphrodite spermatogenesis requires fem-3 translational repression. We show that C. briggsae requires neither fem-2 nor fem-3 for hermaphrodite development, and that XO Cb-fem-2/3 animals are transformed into hermaphrodites, not females as in C. elegans. Exhaustive screens for Cb-tra-2 suppressors identified another 75 fem-like mutants, but all are self-fertile hermaphrodites rather than females. Control of hermaphrodite spermatogenesis therefore acts downstream of the fem genes in C. briggsae. The outwardly similar hermaphrodites of C. elegans and C. briggsae thus achieve self-fertility via intervention at different points in the core sex determination pathway. These findings are consistent with convergent evolution of hermaphroditism, which is marked by considerable developmental genetic flexibility.  相似文献

True hermaphroditism (TH) is an unusual form of sex reversal, characterized by the development of testicular and ovarian tissue in the same subject. Approximately 60% of the patients have a 46,XX karyotype, 33% are mosaics with a second cell line containing a Y chromosome, while the remaining 7% are 46,XY. Molecular analyses have demonstrated that SRY is present in only 10% of TH with a 46,XX karyotype; therefore, in the remaining 90%, mutations at unknown X-linked or autosomal sex determining loci have been proposed as factors responsible for testicular development. True hermaphroditism presents considerable genetic heterogeneity with several molecular anomalies leading to the dual gonadal development as SRY point mutations or SRY hidden gonadal mosaicism. In order to identify genetic defects associated with subjects with the disease, we performed molecular analyses of the SRY gene in DNA from blood leukocytes and gonadal tissue in 12 true hermaphrodites with different karyotypes. Our results using PCR and FISH analyses reveal the presence of hidden mosaicism for SRY or other Y sequences in some patients with XX true hermaphroditism and confirms that mosaicism for SRY limited to the gonads is an alternative mechanism for testicular development in 46,XX true hermaphrodites.  相似文献

Gonadal development, maturation, spawning and hermaphroditism were investigated in captive blackspot sea bream, Pagellus bogaraveo Brünnich, 1768, during the second, third and fourth years of life. The gonads of 224 fish were examined macroscopically and histologically. Undifferentiated gonads were found in fish smaller than 22.0 cm. Adult fish showed four gonadal differentiations: ovotestes with functional testis and quiescent ovary (Mf), ovotestes with functional ovary and regressed testis (mF), ovotestes with both ovary and testis at a resting stage (mf), and ovaries with no male tissue (F). The overall incidence of gonochoric females F was 41%. Functional males Mf were more frequent in age classes 1+ and 2+, whereas functional females mF predominated in the 3+ age class, above 25.0 cm TL. Histological examination revealed testicular degeneration and atrophy in functional females mF. On the basis of both histological data as well as size and age frequency distribution, it is suggested that the reproductive strategy of P. bogaraveo in captivity is characterized by protandrous hermaphroditism, with a high incidence of female gonochorism. Spawning occurred in March–April, at a size of 28.0 cm and age 3 in males and at 29.5 cm and age 4 in females. The gonosomatic index (GSI) remained constantly low (≤ 0.05) throughout the second and third years of life. A significant increase in GSI was noted in both males and females at the accomplishment of the fourth year of life, coinciding with the spawning season. The results are compared with information available on wild P. bogaraveo and discussed with a view to a possible exploitation of this species in aquaculture, through a reliable control of reproduction.  相似文献

Intersexual gonads were detected in three clupeiform species, Sardinops melanostictus, Sardinella zunasi and Englaulis japonicus, collected in Tokyo Bay off Yokohama City, Japan, of which appearance rates were 18.2, 34.6 and 33.9 %, respectively. While spermatogenesis proceeded normally in these individuals, previtellogenic stage oocytes were detected outside of the testes in the hermaphrodites, appearing as a single cell or small clusters. The results suggest that these species are non‐functional hermaphrodites. As intersexual gonads have been reported in other clupeiform species collected before significant pollution and/or at sites far from urban influences, such non‐functional hermaphrodites may be common occurrence in the order. However, high rates of hermaphrodite appearance also suggest the possibility that the development of these oocytes were induced by environmental estrogens.  相似文献

Sexual development was studied in 25 hermaphrodite mice with the genotype T16H/XSxr. The majority of the animals had a male phenotype similar to that seen in XXSxr males. A few, however, had feminized external genitalia and were classified as females. Examination of the gonads and reproductive tracts of the male hermaphrodites revealed a strong tendency for the left gonad to be more masculine than the right. Most of the gonads in male and female hermaphrodites appeared to be ovaries or testes rather than ovotestes.  相似文献

Synopsis The mangrove killifish, Rivulus marmoratus, is the only known self-fertilizing vertebrate. This species is sexually dimorphic; sexually mature individuals are either hermaphrodite or primary and secondary males. Although the mangrove killifish has a unique reproductive strategy, there has been no study on the reproductive endocrinology of this species. Thus we investigated plasma sex steroid hormone levels and steroidogenesis in the gonads of R. marmoratus by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Plasma 17β-estradiol (E2) and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) were detected both in hermaphrodite and in primary male. Ovarian follicles (follicle-enclosed oocytes) from hermaphrodites, which were categorized into early yolk stage and late yolk stage, and testis tissue of primary males were cultured with different concentrations of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (OHP) or testosterone (T) for 24 h. Production of T, E2, 11-KT and 17α-20 β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17α,20β-P) in the medium from tissue culture were measured by ELISA. Early and late ovarian follicles of hermaphrodites and testis pieces of primary males synchronously secreted E2, 11-KT, and 17α,20β-P following incubation with OHP or T. We conclude that both hermaphrodite and primary male of the mangrove killifish secrete estrogen, androgen, and progestin synchronously.  相似文献

Coloration and sex change were studied in a temperate wrasseHalichoeres poecilopterus in the central part of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. 1,270 examples, 45–179 mm SL, were collected from May to December both in 1983 and 1984. The species is a diandric, protogynous hermaphrodite, and has three color patterns: pale color type (A), brilliant color type (B) and intermediate color type (AB). A-fish were less than 142 mm SL and consisted of primary males (42.6%), females (55.4%), secondary males (0.3%) and fish with transitional gonads (1.7%). A-females changed their color to B, through AB, in the size range 101–131 mm SL. A-primary males changed their color to B, through AB, in the size range 103–134 mm SL. B-fish consisted of primary males (38.6%), secondary males (54.6%) and fish with transitional gonads (6.8%). The majority of females changed their sex to male in the size range 98–131 mm SL.  相似文献
