Over 200 years after the great Goldau rockslide, mighty rocks still lay strewn where they fell. In 1925, in the rockslide area, Nature and Animal Park Goldau was founded. The compound plays a significant role in showing domestic and European animals. Deer, wolves, bears, lynxes, birds of prey and domesticated animals – approximately 700 animals and 100 animal species – live in a natural habitat of some 34 hectares. Visitors can watch the animals all year round. Rest areas, tours, discovery stations, and – due to the extensive free running zones where people can feed sika deer, mouflon, and other cloven-hoofed animals – beckon people to stay.In 2009, a fascinating enclosure for bears and wolves went operational, and, two years after the opening, has withstood the test of endurance.Only the bears had to be stopped in front of the caves’ trench. Vegetation is very good thanks to the planting having been done long before the opening. Nothing has to be refitted. 700 groups can be accompanied to tour the compound annually).

Das pyroelektrische Verhalten und das permanente elektrische Moment von menschlichem und tierischem Sehnengewebe

Zusammenfassung Bei menschlichem und tierischem Sehnengewebe wurde pyroelektrisches Verhalten festgestellt. Pyroelektrisches Verhalten bedeutet, daß eine permanente makroskopische elektrische Polarisation und somit ein permanentes elektrisches Moment in Richtung der pyroelektrischen Achse vorhanden ist.Die pyroelektrische (und daher auch piezoelektrische) Achse verläuft in der Längsrichtung der Sehnenfasern bzw. ihrer Kollagenfibrillen. Sie stimmt überein mit der optischen Faserachse, in deren Verlauf positiv einachsige Doppelbrechung bekannt ist. Sehnen mit leidlicher Parallelausrichtung ihrer Faserbündel zeigen dementsprechend makroskopisch eine pyroelektrische Achse parallel zur physiologischen Sehnenlängsachse. Bei seilartiger Bündelung der Fibrillen oder anderen histologischen Unregelmäßigkeiten im Faserverlauf zeigen sich korrespondierende Unregelmäßigkeiten des pyroelektrischen Achsenverlaufs.In genau korrespondierenden Abschnitten der gleichen Sehne verschiedener Individuen fand sich eine sehr erhebliche biologische Streubreite der pyro- und piezoelektrischen Effekte.In situ hatte das permanente elektrische Moment der untersuchten menschlichen und Rinder-Sehnen, sowie der Schwanzsehnen von Ratten eine festliegende gleichsinnige Vektorrichtung bei allen Individuen. Die Vektorrichtung war bei den untersuchten korrespondierenden Sehnen von Mensch und Rind sowie bei den Rattenschwanz-Sehnen analog.Die Vektorrichtung der permanenten elektrischen Polarisation bei Sehnengewebe, und wahrscheinlich auch bei anderen kollagenhaltigen Strukturen, scheint in Beziehung zur morphogenetischen Entwicklungsrichtung der Tiere zu stehen.

Summary Tendons are pyroelectric. Pyroelectrical behaviour is identical with a permanent electrical moment in the direction of the pyroelectrical axis. There exists a pyroelectrical (and consequently also piezoelectrical) axis corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the tendon fibres and their collagen fibrils, and also corresponding to their optical axis, in the direction of which a positive birefringence is known.Accordingly in tendons with an approximately parallel alignment of the collagen fibres the pyroelectrical (and piezoelectrical) axis corresponds to the physiological longitudinal tendon axis. In rope-like or any other histological irregular forms of the collagen fibre alignment corresponding irregularities of the electrical axis direction were found.The pyro- and piezoelectric effects show large biological variations in corresponding tendons of different individuals.In situ the permanent electrical moment in the examined tendons of men and ox and of rat-tail respectively is always in the same vector direction in each individual. This vector direction is analogical in all examined corresponding tendons of men, ox, and also in rat-tail. The permanent electrical moment of tendons (as well as of other collagen-containing tissues) seems to correspond to the morphogenetical development axis of animals.The results of this investigation may be understood by the assumption that the rod-like collagen molecule (i.e. tropocollagen) represents an electrical dipole with a permanent electrical moment in the longitudinal direction of the rod.

Das Kolloid in den Inselzellen von Neunaugen und Fischen

Zusammenfassung In den B-Zellen des Inselgewebes adulter Flußneunaugen findet man intraoder interzelluläre Tropfen, die als Kolloid angesprochen werden. Die histoehemischen Untersuchungen ergeben, daß die Kolloidgrundsubstanz aus neutralen Mucoproteiden gebildet wird. In der Grundsubstanz liegen Ribonucleinsäuregrana. Nach den Ergebnissen von SH- und S-S-Gruppennachweisreaktionen wird gefolgert, daß auch Insulin im Kolloid enthalten ist. — Kolloid ist in geringer Menge in manchen B-Zellen von Pleuronectes platessa L. und Pleuronectes flesus L. sowie Sebastes marinus L. zu ermitteln. Zugunsten gleicher Wertigkeit der Kolloide von Neunaugen und Knochenfischen sprechen die Morphologie, die Bildungsweise und die Übereinstimmung einiger histochemischer Reaktionen. Kolloid findet sich in normalen Mengen auch im Inselgewebe von adulten Flußneunaugen, die längere Zeit mit Glucose oder Insulin belastet wurden. Es wird diskutiert, ob dem Kolloid eine stoffwechselphysiologische Bedeutung zukommen könnte.

Summary In the B-Cells of the islets of Langerhans in adult river-lampreys intracellular or intercellular colloid-droplets can be found. Histochemical investigations have proved that the substance of the colloid consists of neutral mucoproteids containing granulations of ribonucleic acids. From the results of the histochemical reactions the evidence of SH- and S-S-groups is shown, therefore the presence of insulin in the colloid droplets is suggested. In some B-cells of Pleuronectes platessa L., Pleuronectes flesus L. and Sebastes marinus L. colloid droplets may be found in little quantities. The colloid droplets in lampreys and teleosts seem to be identical concerning morphology, formation and some histochemical reactions. Glucose or insulin being injected for rather a long time, colloid droplets occur in the islets of adult lampreys as well in normal quantities. It is being discussed if there may be any metabolic significance of the colloid droplets.

     

Das Rhomben- und Blockmuster im Eischalenkalk von Cygnus olor

Zusammenfassung Der Schalenkalk der Schwanen-Eischale — der in den exosphäritischen Schichten von den bekannten Globular-Inklusionen durchsetzt ist — enthält im Bereich der inneren Säulen zahllose luftgefüllte Spalten. Diese werden von Kristallflächen (insbesondere Rhomboederflächen) begrenzt und sind innerhalb eines jeden Calcitindividuums (Säulenprismas) einheitlich orientiert. So entsteht ein Rhomben- oder Blockmuster. Der Schalenquerschliff zeigt das Muster am deutlichsten; beim Übergang der inneren in die äußeren Säulen aber tritt es auch am Flachschliff klar hervor. Der zackige Verlauf der Lateralgrenzen der inneren Säulen beruht auf dem Verfugen der benachbarten Prismen entsprechend den Musterelementen. Das Muster findet sich auch bei anderen Anatiden; sein weiteres Vorkommen bedarf noch der Überprüfung.

Summary The lime of the swan's egg shell — containing in the exospheritical layers the well known globular inclusions—shows in the reach of the inner columns numberless airfilled clefts. These are bordered by crystal faces (especially rhomb faces) and are orientated uniformly within every calcite individual (column prism). So a rhomb- or block-pattern arises. The transverse ground section of the egg shell shows the pattern most distinct; but in the transition region from the inner to the outer columns it also can be seen cleary on the tangential ground section. The pronged cours of the lateral boundaries of the inner columns is caused by the indentation between the pattern elements of neighboured prisms. Also other Anatidae possess this pattern; its farther occurence needs more examination.

Das Zusammenspiel von Lagena und Utriculus bei der Lageorientierung der Knochenfische

Zusammenfassung Aus früheren Versuchen an Fischen ergab sich, daß die eine Lageorientierung ermöglichenden Organe (Utriculi und Augen) sich in ihrer Wirkung im Zentrum linear überlagern, während die nach einseitiger Utriculusausschaltung bewirkte zusätzliche Drehtendenz von der linearen Superposition in einem bestimmten Bereich stark abweicht.Die Hypothese, daß diese Abweichung durch einen Einfluß der Lagena verursacht ist, wird bestätigt: nach beidseitiger Lagenaausschaltung verschwindet die Abweichung quantitativ.Utriculus- und Lagenaausschaltung in verschiedener Kombination klären die Rolle der Lagena weiter auf; die Hauptergebnisse sind auf S. 567 (1–5) zusammengestellt. Es zeigt sich im ganzen, daß die Lagena zwar Schwererezeptoren besitzt, aber für sich allein keine Lageorientierung ermöglicht. Sie hat eine, in ihrer Größe lageabhängige, tonisierende Wirkung auf das gleichseitige Gleichgewichtszentrum, durch die Aktivitätsunterschiede in beiden Zentren (bei Normallage des Tieres) ausgeglichen werden.Es wird gezeigt, daß diese Mitarbeit am Gleichgewicht biologisch sinnvoll, aber wohl nur eine Nebenleistung der Lagena ist.Im Gegensatz zum Lagenaeffekt bewirken alle Aufregung verursachenden Reize eine multiplikative Steigerung vorhandener Aktivitätsunterschiede im Gleichgewichtszentrum. Auch dieser Effekt erweist sich als eine biologisch sinnvolle Sicherungsmaßnahme.Fische ohne Utriculi und Lagenae besitzen noch eine sehr ungenaue Beziehung zur Erdschwere, die vermutlich durch Propriozeptoren der Schwanzmuskeln vermittelt wird.Als Nebebenbefund ergibt sich, daß Utriculusstatolithenregenerate von oft ganz abstrusen Formen noch eine völlig normale, nur quantitativ schwächere Orientierung zur Erdschwere ermöglichen; daraus wird geschlossen, daß Form und Beschaffenheit des Statolithen für seine Funktion weitgehend belanglos sind.     

Das Adenosinphosphat-System während Wachstum und Entwicklung von Acanthamoeba castellanii

The concentration of adenosine tri-, adenosine di-, and adenosine monophosphate in cells of Acanthamoeba castellanii was measured during the logarithmic growth phase and the stationary growth phase in which trophozoites were transformed into cysts. This developmental process was induced in three ways: by growth in nutrient medium to high cell density, by transferring cells in the logarithmic phase into a nutrient-free medium, and by mixing logarithmically growing cells with ethidium bromide. In all cases, encystment is accompanied with a reduction of total adenosine phosphate content to about 85%, mainly because of a depletion of cellular ATP. The value of the adenosine phosphate energy charge in logarithmically growing amoebae is 0.83. During development the energy charge becomes stabilized at different values (between 0.58 and 0.81), characteristic to the mode of encystation. A possible functional relationship between changes of the adenosine phosphate concentration and developmental processes of the amoeba is discussed.     

Das Vorkommen von Phytol und Geranylgeraniol in den Bacteriochlorophyllen roter und grüner Schwefelbakterien

The bacteriochlorophylls a of 38 strains belonging to 15 different species of the purple sulfur bacteria (Chromatiaceae) were studied with respect to the nature of the esterifying alcohol. The classical bacteriochlorophyll a_P containing phytol is the main bacteriochlorophyll in all strains. The new bacteriochlorophyll a_Gg occurs as a minor component in addition to bacteriochlorophyll a_P only in five species.The esterifying alcohol of the bacteriochlorophyll a of the reaction centers of all seven type strains of the Chlorobiaceae was shown to be phytol.The compounds withR _f -values between the bacteriophaeophytins a_P and a_Gg found by thin-layer-chromatography were shown to be artifacts of the preparation technique.All strains of the bacteriochlorophyll b-containing purple bacteria have phytol as the major esterifying alcohol; in addition, small amounts of bacteriochlorophyll b are esterified with another alcohol which is most probably all-trans-geranylgeraniol.
