The differences in pigment levels, photosynthetic activity and the chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd (as indicator of photosynthetic rates) of green sun and shade leaves of three broadleaf trees (Platanus acerifolia Willd., Populus alba L., Tilia cordata Mill.) were compared. Sun leaves were characterized by higher levels of total chlorophylls a + b and total carotenoids x + c as well as higher values for the weight ratio chlorophyll (Chl) a/b (sun leaves 3.23–3.45; shade leaves: 2.74–2.81), and lower values for the ratio chlorophylls to carotenoids (a + b)/(x + c) (with 4.44–4.70 in sun leaves and 5.04–5.72 in shade leaves). Sun leaves exhibited higher photosynthetic rates P N on a leaf area basis (mean of 9.1–10.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and Chl basis, which correlated well with the higher values of stomatal conductance G s (range 105–180 mmol m−2 s−1), as compared to shade leaves (G s range 25–77 mmol m−2 s−1; P N: 3.2–3.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The higher photosynthetic rates could also be detected via imaging the Chl fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd, which possessed higher values in sun leaves (2.8–3.0) as compared to shade leaves (1.4–1.8). In addition, via R Fd images it was shown that the photosynthetic activity of the leaves of all trees exhibits a large heterogeneity across the leaf area, and in general to a higher extent in sun leaves than in shade leaves.  相似文献

The effect of high irradiance (HI) during desiccation and subsequent rehydration of the homoiochlorophyllous desiccation-tolerant shade plant Haberlea rhodopensis was investigated. Plants were irradiated with a high quantum fluence rate (HI; 350 μmol m−2 s−1 compared to ca. 30 μmol m−2 s−1 at the natural rock habitat below trees) and subjected either to fast desiccation (tufts dehydrated with naturally occurring thin soil layers) or slow desiccation (tufts planted in pots in peat-soil dehydrated by withholding irrigation). Leaf water content was 5 % of the control after 4 d of fast and 19 d of slow desiccation. Haberlea was very sensitive to HI under all conditions. After 19 d at HI, even in well-watered plants there was a strong reduction of rates of net photosynthesis and transpiration, contents of chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoids, as well as photosystem 2 activity (detected by the Chl fluorescence ratio RFd). Simultaneously, the blue/red and green/red fluorescence ratios increased considerably suggesting increased synthesis of polyphenolic compounds. Desiccation of plants in HI induced irreversible changes in the photosynthetic apparatus and leaves did not recover after rehydration regardless of fast or slow desiccation. Only young leaves survived desiccation.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters, growth, and pigment contents were determined during expansion of the fourth leaf of in vitro photoautotrophically cultured Nicotiana tabacum L. plants at three irradiances [photosynthetically active radiation (400–700 nm): low, LI 60 μmol m−2 s−1; middle, MI 180 μmol m−2 s−1; and high, HI 270 μmol m−2 s−1]. During leaf expansion, several symptoms usually accompanying leaf senescence appeared very early in HI and then in MI plants. Symptoms of senescence in developing leaves were: decreasing chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content and Chl a/b ratio, decreasing both maximum (FV/FM) and actual (ΦPS2) photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, and increasing non-photochemical quenching. Nevertheless, net photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate (P N) did not decrease consistently with decrease in Chl content, but exhibited a typical ontogenetic course with gradual increase. P N reached its maximum before full leaf expansion and then tended to decline. Thus excess irradiance during in vitro cultivation did not cause early start of leaf senescence, but impaired photosynthetic performance and Chl content in leaves and changed their typical ontogenetic course.  相似文献

Long-term (30 d) effects of 100, 200, 300, and 400 mM NaCl on photosystem 2 (PS 2)-mediated electron transport activity and content of D1 protein in the thylakoid membranes of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultured in vitro at low irradiance 20 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1 were investigated. 100 mM NaCl increased contents of chlorophylls (Chl) a and b, carotenoids (Car; xanthophylls + carotenes), and the ratio of Chl a/b, and Car/Chl a+b. However, further increase in NaCl concentration led to the significant reduction in the contents of Chl a, and Chl b, and increase in the ratio of Chl a/b and Car/Chl a+b. NaCl treatment decreased the PS 2-mediated electron transport activity and contents of various thylakoid membrane polypeptides including D1 protein.  相似文献

Two rice chlorophyll (Chl) b-less mutants (VG28-1, VG30-5) and the respective wild type (WT) plant (cv. Zhonghua No. 11) were analyzed for the changes in Chl fluorescence parameters, xanthophyll cycle pool, and its de-epoxidation state under exposure to strong irradiance, SI (1 700 μmol m−2 s−1). We also examined alterations in the chloroplast ultrastructure of the mutants induced by methyl viologen (MV) photooxidation. During HI (0–3.5 h), the photoinactivation of photosystem 2 (PS2) appeared earlier and more severely in Chl b-less mutants than in the WT. The decreases in maximal photochemical efficiency of PS2 in the dark (Fv/Fm), quantum efficiency of PS2 electron transport (ΦPS2), photochemical quenching (qP), as well as rate of photochemistry (Prate), and the increases in de-epoxidation state (DES) and rate of thermal dissipation of excitation energy (Drate) were significantly greater in Chl b-mutants compared with the WT plant. A relatively larger xanthophyll pool and 78–83 % conversion of violaxanthin into antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin in the mutants after 3.5 h of HI was accompanied with a high ratio of inactive/total PS2 (0.55–0.73) and high 1–qP (0.57–0.68) which showed that the activities of the xanthophyll cycle were probably insufficient to protect the photosynthetic apparatus against photoinhibition. No apparent difference of chloroplast ultrastructure was found between Chl b-less mutants and WT plants grown under low, LI (180 μmol m−2 s−1) and high, HI (700 μmol m−2 s−1) irradiance. However, swollen chloroplasts and slight dilation of thylakoids occurred in both mutants and the WT grown under LI followed by MV treatment. These typical symptoms of photooxidative damage were aggravated as plants were exposed to HI. Distorted and loose scattered thylakoids were observed in particular in the Chl b-less mutants. A greater extent of photoinhibition and photooxidation in these mutants indicated that the susceptibility to HI and oxidative stresses was enhanced in the photosynthetic apparatus without Chl b most likely as a consequence of a smaller antenna size.  相似文献

Eco-physiological responses of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria to light   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The eco-physiological responses of three nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (N-fixing cyanobacteria), Aphanizomenon gracile, Anabaena minderi, and Ana. torques-reginae, to light were assessed under nutrient saturation. The N-fixing cyanobacteria were isolated into monocultures from a natural bloom in a shallow colored lake and their growth irradiance parameters and pigment composition were assessed. The different ecological traits related to light use (μmax, α, I k) suggest that these N-fixing cyanobacteria are well adapted to low light conditions at sufficient nutrients, yet interspecific differences were observed. Aphanizomenon gracile and Anabaena minderi had high relative growth rates at low irradiances (ca. 70% of those in high light), low half saturation constant for light-limited growth (I k < 9.09 μmol photon m−2 s−1) and high efficiency (α < 0.11 day−1 μmol photon−1 m2 s). Conversely, Ana. torques-reginae showed poorer light competitiveness: low relative growth rates at low irradiances (ca. 40% of those in high light), low α (0.009 day−1 μmol photon−1 m2 s) and higher I k (35.5 μmol photon m−2 s−1). Final densities in Aphanizomenon gracile and Anabaena minderi reached bloom densities at irradiances above 30 μmol photon m−2 s−1 with different hierarchy depending on irradiance, whereas Ana. torques-reginae never achieved bloom densities. All species had very low densities at irradiances ≤17 μmol photon m−2 s−1, thus no N-fixing blooms would be expected at these irradiances. Also, under prolonged darkness and at lowest irradiance (0 and 3 μmol photon m−2 s−1) akinetes were degraded, suggesting that in ecosystems with permanently dark sediments, the prevalence of N-fixing cyanobacteria should not be favored. All species displayed peaks of phycocyanin, but no phycoeritrin, probably due to the prevailing red light in the ecosystem from which they were isolated.  相似文献

Photosynthetic rates of green leaves (GL) and green flower petals (GFP) of the CAM plant Dendrobium cv. Burana Jade and their sensitivities to different growth irradiances were studied in shade-grown plants over a period of 4 weeks. Maximal photosynthetic O2 evolution rates and CAM acidities [dawn/dusk fluctuations in titratable acidity] were higher in leaves exposed to intermediate sunlight [a maximal photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 500–600 μmol m−2 s−1] than in leaves grown under full sunlight (a maximal PPFD of 1 000–1 200 μmol m−2 s−1) and shade (a maximal PPFD of 200–250 μmol m−2 s−1). However, these two parameters of GFP were highest in plants grown under the shade and lowest in full sun-grown plants. Both GL and GFP of plants exposed to full sunlight had lower predawn Fv/Fm [dark adapted ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence (the maximal photosystem 2 yield without actinic irradiation)] than those of shade-grown plants. When exposed to intermediate sunlight, however, there were no significant changes in predawn Fv/Fm in GL whereas a significant decrease in predawn Fv/Fm was found in GFP of the same plant. GFP exposed to full sunlight exhibited a greater decrease in predawn Fv/Fm compared to those exposed to intermediate sunlight. The patterns of changes in total chlorophyll (Chl) content of GL and GFP were similar to those of Fv/Fm. Although midday Fv/Fm fluctuated with prevailing irradiance, changes of midday Fv/Fm after exposure to different growth irradiances were similar to those of predawn Fv/Fm in both GL and GFP. The decreases in predawn and midday Fv/Fm were much more pronounced in GFP than in GL under full sunlight, indicating greater sensitivity in GFP to high irradiance (HI). In the laboratory, electron transport rate and photochemical and non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence were also determined under different irradiances. All results indicated that GFP are more susceptible to HI than GL. Although the GFP of Dendrobium cv. Burana Jade require a lower amount of radiant energy for photosynthesis and this plant is usually grown in the shade, is not necessarily a shade plant.  相似文献

Citrus volkameriana (L.) plants were grown for 43 d in nutrient solutions containing 0, 2, 14, 98, or 686 μM Mn (Mn0, Mn2, Mn14, Mn98, and Mn686, respectively). To adequately investigate the combined effects of Mn nutrition and irradiance on photosystem 2 (PS2) activity, irradiance response curves for electron transport rate (ETR), nonphotochemical quenching (qN), photochemical quenching (qP), and real photochemical efficiency of PS2 (ΦPS2) were recorded under 10 different irradiances (66, 96, 136, 226, 336, 536, 811, 1 211, 1 911, and 3 111 μmol m−2 s−1, I66 to I3111, respectively) generated with the PAM-2000 fluorometer. Leaf chlorophyll content was significantly lower under Mn excess (Mn686) compared to Mn0; its highest values were recorded in the treatments Mn2-Mn98. However, ETR and ΦPS2 values were significantly lower under Mn0 compared to the other Mn treatments, when plants were exposed to irradiances ≥96 μmol m−2 s−1. Furthermore, Mn0 plants had significantly higher values of qN and lower values of qP at irradiances ≤226 and ≥336 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively, than those grown under Mn2-Mn686. Irrespective of Mn treatment, the values of ΦPS2 and qN decreased, while those of qP increased progressively by increasing irradiance from I136 to I3111. Finally, Mn2-Mn98 plants were less sensitive to photoinhibition of photosynthesis (≥811 μmol m−2 s−1) than the Mn686 (≥536 μmol m−2 s−1) and Mn0 (≥336 μmol m−2 s−1) ones.  相似文献

A yellow leaf colouration mutant (named ycm) generated from rice T-DNA insertion lines was identified with less grana lamellae and low thylakoid membrane protein contents. At weak irradiance [50 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], chlorophyll (Chl) contents of ycm were ≈20 % of those of WT and Chl a/b ratios were 3-fold that of wild type (WT). The leaf of ycm showed lower values in the actual photosystem 2 (PS2) efficiency (ΦPS2), photochemical quenching (qP), and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PS2 centres 1 (Fv′/Fm′) than those of WT, except no difference in the maximal efficiency of PS2 photochemistry (Fv/Fm). With progress in irradiance [100 and 200 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], there was a change in the photosynthetic pigment stoichiometry. In ycm, the increase of total Chl contents and the decrease in Chl a/b ratio were observed. ΦPS2, qP, and Fv′/Fm′ of ycm increased gradually along with the increase of irradiance but still much less than in WT. The increase of xanthophyll ratio [(Z+A)/(V+A+Z)] associated with non-photochemical quenching (qN) was found in ycm which suggested that ycm dissipated excess energy through the turnover of xanthophylls. No significant differences in pigment composition were observed in WT under various irradiances, except Chl a/b ratio that gradually decreased. Hence the ycm mutant developed much more tardily than WT, which was caused by low photon energy utilization independent of irradiance.  相似文献

Six months old in vitro-grown Anoectochilus formosanus plantlets were transferred to ex-vitro acclimation under low irradiance, LI [60 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], intermediate irradiance, II [180 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1], and high irradiance, HI [300 μmol(photon) m−2 s−1] for 30 d. Imposition of II led to a significant increase of chlorophyll (Chl) b content, rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (g s), electron transfer rate (ETR), quantum yield of electron transport from water through photosystem 2 (ΦPS2), and activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase (RuBPCO, EC 4.1.1.39). This indicates that Anoectochilus was better acclimated at II compared to LI treatment. On the other hand, HI acclimation led to a significant reduction of Chl a and b, P N, E, g s, photochemical quenching, dark-adapted quantum efficiency of open PS2 centres (Fv/Fm), probability of an absorbed photon reaching an open PS2 reaction centre (Fv′/Fm′), ETR, ΦPS2, and energy efficiency of CO2 fixation (ΦCO2PS2). This indicates that HI treatment considerably exceeded the photo-protective capacity and Anoectochilus suffered HI induced damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. Imposition of HI significantly increased the contents of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin (ZEA), non-photochemical quenching, and conversion of violaxanthin to ZEA. Thus Anoectochilus modifies its system to dissipate excess excitation energy and to protect the photosynthetic machinery.  相似文献

Chlorophyll (Chl) content, dry mass, relative water content (RWC), leaf mass per area (LMA), proline (Pro) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activity, P N-PAR response curves and gas exchange were studied to determine the effects of water stress on photosynthetic activity, dry mass partitioning and metabolic changes in four provenances of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss). The results indicated that provenance differences existed in the adaptation response to water stress that included changes to growth strategies coupled with ecophysiological and metabolic adjustments. As water stress increased, stomatal conductance (g s), net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and leaf RWC decreased while LMA increased in all provenances. Dry mass was reduced in droughted plants and the percentage increased in dry mass allocated to roots, and enzyme activities of SOD and POD were highest in neem originating from Kalyani (KA) provenance and lowest in neem originating from New Dehli (ND) provenance. In contrast, water stress increased MDA content least in KA and most in ND. Furthermore, neem originating from ND also had the greatest decrease in Chl a/b ratio while the ratio was least affected in neem originating from KA. These findings suggest neem originating from KA may have more drought resistance than neem originating from ND. The data from P N-PAR response curves are less clear. While these curves showed that drought stress increased compensation irradiance (I c) and dark respiration (R D) and decreased saturation irradiance (I s) and maximum net photosynthetic rate (P max), the extent of decline in P max was provenance dependent. P max under non-waterlimiting conditions was higher in neem originating from Jodhpur (MA) (about 14 μmol m−2 s−1) than in the other three provenances (all about 10 μmol m−2 s−1), but mild water stress had minimal effect on P max of these three provenances whereas P max of MA provenance declined to 10 μmol m−2 s−1, i.e. a similar value. However, under severe water stress P max of MA and KA provenances had declined to 40% of non-stressed values (about 6 and 4 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively) whereas the decline in P max of neem originating from Kulapachta (KU) and ND provenances was about 50% of nonstressed values (about 5 μmol m−2 s−1). These data suggest the P N responses of KU and ND provenances are most tolerant, and KA and MA least tolerant to increasing water stress, but also suggest MA provenance could be the most desired under both non-water-limiting and water-limiting conditions due to highest P max in all conditions.  相似文献

Rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), and leaf temperature (TL) of maintenance leaves of tea under plucking were affected by photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) of 200–2 200 μmol m−2 s−1. P N gradually increased with the increase of PPFD from 200 to 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 and thereafter sharply declined. Maximum P N was 13.95 μmol m−2 s−1 at 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD. There was no significant variation of P N among PPFD at 1 400–1 800 μmol m−2 s−1. Significant drop of P N occurred at 2 000 μmol m−2 s−1. PPFD at 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 reduced photosynthesis to 6.92 μmol m−2 s−1. PPFD had a strong correlation with TL and E. Both TL and E linearly increased from 200 to 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD. TL and E were highly correlated. The optimum TL for maximum P N was 26.0 °C after which P N declined significantly. E had a positive correlation with P N.  相似文献

Response to irradiance of leaf net photosynthetic rates (P N) of four carrot cultivars: Cascade, Caro Choice (CC), Oranza, and Red Core Chantenay (RCC) were examined in a controlled environment. Gas exchange measurements were conducted at photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) from 100 to 1 000 μmol m−2 s−1 at 20 °C and 350 μmol (CO2) mol−1(air). The values of P N were fitted to a rectangular hyperbolic nonlinear regression model. P N for all cultivars increased similarly with increasing PAR but Cascade and Oranza generally had higher P N than CC. None of the cultivars reached saturation at 1 000 μmol m−2 s−1. The predicted P N at saturation (P Nmax) for Cascade, CC, Oranza, and RCC were 19.78, 16.40, 19.79, and 18.11 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1, respectively. The compensation irradiance (I c) occurred at 54 μmol m−2 s−1 for Cascade, 36 μmol m−2 s−1 for CC, 45 μmol m−2 s−1 for Oranza, and 25 μmol m−2 s−1 for RCC. The quantum yield among the cultivars ranged between 0.057–0.033 mol(CO2) mol−1(PAR) and did not differ. Dark respiration varied from 2.66 μmol m−2 s−1 for Cascade to 0.85 μmol m−2 s−1 for RCC. As P N increased with PAR, intercellular CO2 decreased in a non-linear manner. Increasing PAR increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate to a peak between 600 and 800 μmol m−2 s−1 followed by a steep decline resulting in sharp increases in water use efficiency. Growth, biomass allocation, and photosynthetic characteristics of seedlings of five invasive non-indigenous and four native species grown under different light regimes were studied to help explain the success of invasive species in Hawaiian rainforests. Plants were grown under three greenhouse light levels representative of those found in the center and edge of gaps and in the understory of Hawaiian rainforests, and under an additional treatment with unaltered shade. Relative growth rates (RGRs) of invasive species grown in sun and partial shade were significantly higher than those for native species, averaging 0.25 and 0.17 g g−1 week−1, respectively, while native species averaged only 0.09 and 0.06 g g−1 week−1, respectively. The RGR of invasive species under the shade treatment was 40% higher than that of native species. Leaf area ratios (LARs) of sun and partial-shade-grown invasive and native species were similar but the LAR of invasive species in the shade was, on average, 20% higher than that of native species. There were no differences between invasive and native species in biomass allocation to shoots and roots, or in leaf mass per area across light environments. Light-saturated photosynthetic rates (Pmax) were higher for invasive species than for native species in all light treatments. Pmax of invasive species grown in the sun treatment, for example, ranged from 5.5 to 11.9 μmol m−2 s−1 as compared with 3.0−4.5 μmol m−2 s−1 for native species grown under similar light conditions. The slope of the linear relationship between Pmax and dark respiration was steeper for invasive than for native species, indicating that invasive species assimilate more CO2 at a lower respiratory cost than native species. These results suggest that the invasive species may have higher growth rates than the native species as a consequence of higher photosynthetic capacities under sun and partial shade, lower dark respiration under all light treatments, and higher LARs when growing under shade conditions. Overall, invasive species appear to be better suited than native species to capturing and utilizing light resources, particularly in high-light environments such as those characterized by relatively high levels of disturbance. The morphological, anatomical and physiological variations of leaf traits were analysed during Quercus ilex L. leaf expansion. The leaf water content (LWC), leaf area relative growth rate (RGRl) and leaf dry mass relative growth rate (RGRm) were the highest (76±2 %, 0.413 cm2 cm−2 d−1, 0.709 mg mg−1 d−1, respectively) at the beginning of the leaf expansion process (7 days after bud break). Leaf expansion lasted 84±2 days when air temperature ranged from 13.3±0.8 to 27.6±0.9 °C. The net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and chlorophyll content per fresh mass (Chl) increased during leaf expansion, having the highest values [12.62±1.64 μmol (CO2) m−2 s−1, 0.090 mol (H2O) m−2 s−1, and 1.03±0.08 mg g−1, respectively] 56 days after bud break. Chl was directly correlated with leaf dry mass (DM) and P N. The thickness of palisade parenchyma contributed to the total leaf thickness (263.1±1.5 μm) by 47 %, spongy layer thickness 38 %, adaxial epidermis and cuticle thickness 9 %, and abaxial epidermis and cuticle thickness 6 %. Variation in leaf size during leaf expansion might be attributed to a combination of cells density and length, and it is confirmed by the significant (p<0.001) correlations among these traits. Q. ilex leaves reached 90 % of their definitive structure before the most severe drought period (beginning of June — end of August). The high leaf mass area (LMA, 15.1±0.6 mg cm−2) at full leaf expansion was indicative of compact leaves (2028±100 cells mm−2). Air temperature increasing might shorten the favourable period for leaf expansion, thus changing the final amount of biomass per unit leaf area of Q. ilex.  相似文献

A coupled model of stomatal conductance and photosynthesis for winter wheat   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5

The model couples stomatal conductance (g s) and net photosynthetic rate (P N) describing not only part of the curve up to and including saturation irradiance (I max), but also the range above the saturation irradiance. Maximum stomatal conductance (g smax) and I max can be calculated by the coupled model. For winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) the fitted results showed that maximum P N (P max) at 600 μmol mol−1 was more than at 350 μmol mol−1 under the same leaf temperature, which can not be explained by the stomatal closure at high CO2 concentration because g smax at 600 μmol mol−1 was less than at 350 μmol mol−1. The irradiance-response curves for winter wheat had similar tendency, e.g. at 25 °C and 350 μmol mol−1 both P N and g s almost synchronously reached the maximum values at about 1 600 μmol m−2 s−1. At 25 °C and 600 μmol mol−1 the I max corresponding to P max and g smax was 2 080 and 1 575 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively.  相似文献

The calculated maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) at saturation irradiance (I m) of 1 314.13 μmol m−2 s−1 was 25.49 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1, and intrinsic quantum yield at zero irradiance was 0.103. The results fitted by nonrectangular hyperbolic model, rectangular hyperbolic method, binomial regression method, and the new model were compared. The maximum P N values calculated by nonrectangular hyperbolic model and rectangular hyperbolic model were higher than the measured values, and the I m calculated by nonrectangular hyperbolic model and rectangular hyperbolic model were less than measured values. Results fitted by new model showed that the response curve of P N to I was nonlinear at low I for Oryza sativa, P N increased nonlinearly with I below saturation value. Above this value, P N decreased nonlinearly with I.  相似文献

Effects of short-term exposure to different irradiances on the function of photosystem 2 (PS2) were studied for barley grown at low (LI; 50 μmol m−2 s−1) and high (HI; 1 100 μmol m−2 s−1) irradiances. HI barley revealed higher ability to down-regulate the light-harvesting within PS2 after exposure to high irradiance as compared to LI plants. This ability was estimated from the light-induced decreases of F685/F742 and E476/E436 in emission and excitation spectra of 77 K chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence in vivo which was 65 and 10 % for HI plants as compared to 30 and 2 % for LI plants, respectively. For LI plants this protective down-regulation of the light-harvesting of PS2 was saturated at 430 μmol m−2 s−1, and progressive PS2 photodamage was induced at higher irradiances. After exposure of LI segments to 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 a pronounced maximum at 700 nm appeared in emission spectrum of 77 K Chl a fluorescence. Based on complementary analysis of 77 K excitation spectra measured at the emission wavelength 685 nm we suggest that this emission maximum may be attributed to the formation of aggregates of light-harvesting complexes of PS2 (LHC2) with part of PS2 core during progressive PS2 photodamage. Our results can be explained assuming different contributions of LHC2 and PS2 core to the total nonradiative dissipation of absorbed excitation energy for the LI and HI barley. In three tropical rain forest light environments in Sabah, Malaysia, we compared photosynthesis in seedlings of ten climax tree species with putatively differing shade tolerances. The objectives of the study were (a) to characterise the range of photosynthetic responses in ten species of the Dipterocarpaceae and (b) to elucidate those photosynthetic characteristics that might provide a basis for niche partitioning. Seedlings were acclimated (c. 7 months) in three light environments; understorey, partial shade and a gap (140 m2). The light environments represented a gradation in median diurnal (0630–1830 hours) photon flux density (PFD) ranging from understorey (4.7 μmol m−2 s−1), through partial shade (21.2 μmol m−2 s−1) to gap (113.7 μmol m−2 s−1). Integrated diurnal PFD were in the sequence gap > partial shade > understorey (15.2, 4.7, 1.3 mol m−2 day−1, respectively). In gap-acclimated plants, species differed in the photosynthetic light-response variables apparent quantum yield, dark respiration rate, light compensation point, net saturated leaf assimilation rate (A sat), and in stomatal conductance (g s sat) when assimilation rate (A) was saturated. A light-demanding pioneer species (Macaranga hypoleuca) and a shade-demanding understorey species (Begonia sp.) had, respectively, higher and lower A sat and g s sat than the dipterocarp species. In high-light conditions A sat and g s sat were strongly positively correlated in dipterocarp species. Differing photosynthetic characteristics of gap-acclimated plants suggest that, in these dipterocarp species, different rates of carbon fixation may be an important factor contributing towards niche partitioning. Mean integrated diurnal A (A diurnal) in the gap, partial shade and understory were, respectively, 122.9, 52.7, 20.5 mmol m−2 day−1. Differences occurred in A diurnal of dipterocarp species between light environments. When Macaranga was included, differences in A diurnal were evident in the gap and partial shade, and in both cases were attributed to the pioneer. For the variable A diurnal, there was of a shift in the rank position of Macaranga among light environments, but a shift did not occur among the dipterocarp species. Results from this study are consistent with the idea that rates of carbon fixation per unit leaf area may contribute towards niche differentiation between the climax and single pioneer species, but not within the group of climax species. Other physiological and/or carbon allocation factors may be involved in any niche partitioning; dipterocarp species often have inherently different growth rates and susceptibility to herbivory. As an alternative to niche partitioning, dipterocarp species may co-exist in natural light environments as a result of habitat disequilibrium or purely stochastic processes. In order to assess the long-term impacts of saline groundwater irrigation to Haloxylon ammodendron, one of the main shrubs in the Tarim desert highway ecological shelterbelt, we irrigated the H. ammodendron seedlings with progressive saline groundwater (3–30 g L−1, simulation environment in the Tarim desert highway ecological shelterbelt) and investigated the diurnal variations of chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence parameters, such as maximal quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (Fv/Fm), quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in PSII (YII), the apparent rate of electron transport at the PSII level (ETR), photochemical quenching coefficient (qP), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), quantum yield of nonregulated non-photochemical energy loss in PSII (YNO) and quantum yield of regulated non-photochemical energy loss in PSII (YII), at approximately 2-h intervals. Fv/Fm with 5 g L−1 (S2) was lower than that with 2 g L−1 (S1) but a little higher than 20 g L−1 (S5), respectively. Under the low light [photosyntheticallyactive radiation (PAR) ≤ 250 μmol m−2 s−1, at 08:00, 10:00 and 20:00 h of the local time], S1 kept the lowest YII and the highest YNPQ; while under the high light (PAR ≥ 1500 μmol m−2 s−1), the YII performed S1>S2>S5, and the reverse YNPQ; under mild light (250 μmol mt-2 s−1 ≤ PAR ≤ 1500 μmol m−2 s−1), S1 remained the highest YII, no matter the light and the salinity, the similar YNO almost occurred basically. The results showed that the sand-binding plant H. ammodendron could regulate its energy-utilizing strategies. The S2 might be the most suitable salinity of the irrigation water for H. ammodendron in the Tarim desert highway ecological shelterbelt in the northwest of China.  相似文献
